Book Description

Surf’s up . . . and so are the stakes when veterinarian and amateur sleuth Jessica Popper escapes to the land of hula, hibiscus, and geckos for a professional conference. The last time she and boyfriend Nick Burby touched down on the island of Hawaii, Nick caused a volcanic eruption when he unexpectedly popped The Question to commitment-phobic Jess. But this trip proves just as dangerous when Jess befriends an ambitious young reporter whose body later washes up on the sand . . . and someone thinks Jess holds the clue to the killer’s motive.

There’s no end of suspects among the exotic flora and fauna, from the victim’s journalistic rivals and a mystery boyfriend to an eccentric beachcomber and a governor’s aide with ties to a controversial biotech firm bringing progress to paradise. One of them is a killer with the chameleon-like ability to stay hidden—and if Jessica doesn’t uncover hula-dunnit in time, she’ll be saying aloha . . . permanently.

If you like Janet Evanovich, you'll enjoy the Cynthia Baxter series... If you enjoy Cynthia Baxter, you'll enjoy Janet Evanovich TOO!!!!

2 out of 5 stars Adventure in Hawaii.......2007-06-09

I found it difficult to believe that a) the lead character would take off to pursue the murder of someone she has only just met and b) that after spending what it would cost to go to Hawaii for a professional conference, she would essentially blow it all off to chase the killer. An interesting use of recombinant DNA makes an appearance.

4 out of 5 stars strong amateur sleuth .......2007-04-05

Eighteen months have passed since Brookside University School of Law student Nick Burby proposed to commitment phobic veterinarian Jessica Popper and she said no though they still seeing one another exclusively. However, they are now returning to the scene of the crime, make that proposal, as they leave Long Island for Maui for her to attend the American Veterinary Medical Association's annual conference and for them to share some romantic interludes.

However their retreat is disturbed when the corpse of reporter Marnie Burton washes on the beach near Jessie. Having met the journalist the day before and as always curious when it comes to bodies, Jessica looks close at the deceased while someone observes her doing so and worries that the Long Islander might have found a clue especially when the vet begins making inquiries that lead her to a biotech firm.

Though the latest Jessica Popper whodunit is not reigning cats and dogs, fans of a strong amateur sleuth tale will enjoy the heroine's return to Hawaii in which her biggest fear is that Nick will ask the "Question" even when someone wants to end her inquiry. The cast is solid even with just one supporting feline as so many two legged beasts make prime suspects. Though some purists might object to the lack of the four-legged secondary characters, Cynthia Baxter provides a strong mystery RIGHT FROM THE GECKO.

When mobile veterinarian and amateur sleuth, Jessica Popper, learns that the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) plans to hold their yearly conference in beautiful Maui, she finds herself feeling a mix of unusual emotions. Sure, she'd love to break free of the blistery Long Island winter she's been suffering through and spend ten gorgeous days traipsing along the warm, sunny beaches of Maui; but she's also dreading the occasion, as she'll be returning to the scene of the crime where she and her current law student and ex-private eye boyfriend, Nick Burby, asked her to marry him. That vacation ended in her running as fast as possible away from her live-in lover, and straight back onto a plane to New York. This time, however, Jess is hoping to experience a slightly different ending to her rest and relaxation. However, on her very first day in Maui, Jess meets an ambitious young reporter named Marnie Burton, who will do anything to land a story. Jess is instantly drawn to the bubbly youngster who seems to have a nose for news. So when she learns about her death the next morning, Jess immediately feels like she should do a little sleuthing of her own to figure out exactly why the intrepid reporter lost her life. Contacting local police, Jess quickly realizes that, just like the detectives on Long Island, local officers are just as unhappy about a snoopy vet sticking her nose into unwanted territories. But Jess doesn't let that intimidate her. Renting a car, she begins skipping various lectures that the conference happens to be offering, instead opting to navigate the rural roads of Maui, searching for clues to help lead her in the right direction. As she makes her way from Marnie's office at the Maui Dispatch to her messy apartment, and even traipsing into forbidden territory by making small talk with Marnie's secret lover, however, she soon realizes that suspects are stacking up left and right. Not only was Marnie a thorn in many people's side, a lot of people found her downright nosy, and wanted nothing more than to see the pixie-esque girl mind her own business. When Jess stumbles upon some of Marnie's files, filled with interviews and information regarding some of the big stories she was working on before she was murdered, she puts two and two together, and comes to believe that someone was scared of Marnie's investigative reporting, and killed her in an attempt to shut her up. The only problem is that Jess has no hard proof to support her theories. Luckily, Nick is along for the ride, and agrees to put his ex-P.I. skills to work to help Jess investigate the murder. Unfortunately, with the amount of time that Jess is devoting to fingering the killer, she hasn't had a minute to soak up the sun, and relax - which is what she'd planned to do on her trip to paradise. As if that weren't bad enough, she and Nick haven't spent more than a few mornings together alone, and now that Jess' beloved neighbor and landlord, Betty, along with her live-in beau have unexpectedly arrived, Jess is having difficulty coming to terms with how she's supposed to fit work, friends, romance, relaxation, and investigating into a vacation that is beginning to look shorter and shorter by the moment. But now that she's at the top of the killers list, she knows that it's imminent that she sniff the murderer out, before she's forced to say aloha...forever.

I have been eagerly awaiting the release of this book for almost a year. And, upon completion, I can honestly say that it was certainly worth the wait. Jessica Popper is back and she's better than ever! From page one, Cynthia Baxter draws you in with her lyrical imagery, and her addicting characters. Her descriptions of Maui - from the beaches to the views, right down to the food, and the personalities of the locals - are so vibrant and illustrative that you instantly feel as if you are on the beach with Jess and Nick, sipping mai tais and soaking up the sun. Jessica is, as always, her inquisitive self. While her canine companions - Lou and Max - along with the always-prevalent Reigning Cats & Dogs mobile veterinary unit are missing from this particular installment, Baxter more than makes up for it by introducing a new kitty into the novel named Moose, and by setting Jessica into various different wacky predicaments that instantly make the reader concerned for her safety. Die-hard fans will absolutely adore the fact that Nick Burby is more prevalent within this particular installment, and enjoy the lovey-dovey moments that take place between both Jess and him throughout the tale, but will also find it interesting to get a little more insight into Nick's character and personality, which instantly makes him more likable. Another plus is the fact that, yes, both Betty and Winston make appearances within RIGHT FROM THE GECKO. And, though their roles in this series addition may be minor, the fact that they are there certainly adds another dimension to the story. Baxter's introduction of Marnie into the novel is truly spectacular. And, while the character is only featured within the first couple of chapters, it's fabulous to get an inside look at the life of an investigative journalist - a perky, hard-hitting, adorable one at that! RIGHT FROM THE GECKO leads you on a wild goose chase through the caves and scenic routes of Hawaii, while giving you an insiders look into the cutthroat world of investigative journalism, alongside an irresistible character who leaves you begging for more. Pawsome!

5 out of 5 stars Very Interesting and great knowledge..........2007-06-29

This book is a description in very specific details of the rhacodactylus family. I find it very important to know where these animals come from, how to maintain them in the most naturalistic way possible, etc. This book is a must need for Rhacodactylus keepers!

5 big thumbs up!

5 out of 5 stars The Definitive Work.......2006-07-05

The nature of human beings is to explore, to examine, and to try to understand everything around us. This book benefits our instinctual search for information about the natural ecosystems around us. It provides us with an insight into the world of some of the rarest and most beautiful creatures in the world and lays bare the world in which they live. Anyone who has an interest in herpetology or is simply hoping to delve into the amazing world of reptile study can gain so much from this book and from Phillipe De Vosjoli's other outstanding and contemplative works.

5 out of 5 stars Best Rhacodactylus Book in print.......2005-08-16

This is by far the best book in print on Rhac's. It covers Crested, Gargoyle, Chahoua, and the Giant Leachianus Geckos among others. It has sections on all aspects of careing for them including breeding. Many helpful photos to demonstrate the various color and structure morphs (especially of the Crested Geckos). The only thing that could be added here (maybe in a second edition) is what combinations of different morphs are likely to produce what morphs. Also some info on on temperature sex determination for incubation temps would be helpful in the future after more research is done in this area. The Authors all have plenty of first hand experience and some of the largest collections of these geckos in the world. All in all, the best book available on Rhac's at this time.

5 out of 5 stars a must have for any rhacodatylus owner!!.......2003-12-13

This book is excellant! The text is thorough, and the illustrations are phenomenal. There is virtually no stone left unturned. Every question concerning the husbandry and natural history of rhacodactylus is explored and explained. The authors attention to detail is unmatched. This book is a must have for any person whom wants to own, or already owns any species of rhacodactylus, novice and expert alike.

5 out of 5 stars If you have ANY interest in Rhacodactylus, get this book!.......2003-12-12

This book is a MUST HAVE for anyone interested in this amazing group of geckos. Rhacodactylus are a small group of geckos that are found only on the island of New Caledonia, that lies roughly between Australia, New Guinea and New Zealand. For such a small group, these geckos occur in a diverse array of beautiful and often bizarre forms. One member of this genus, Rhacodactylus leachianus, holds the distinction of being the largest living species of gecko in the world, reaching a total length of up to 17 inches and weighing nearly a pound!

I have been keeping reptiles for 30+ years. I can remember back when the only readily available books on reptile or amphibian care had lots of pretty (or sometimes not so pretty and often mislabeled) pictures, but little useful information on the natural history or husbandry of these animals. Worse yet, what little information was there was frequently just plain wrong! Those of us who were really dedicated to the hobby had to go to university libraries and search out obscure zoo and animal care journals to gain insight on how to keep our animals healthy, happy and reproducing.

That all changed when Philippe de Vosjoli introduced his Advanced Vivarium Systems "Care and Maintenence" series of books that emphasized good, solid husbandry information, based on years of research by the top experts in the field. Many of these he authored or co-authored himself along with some of the other top reptile and amphibian keepers in the world. The goal of these books was to make good, solid information on proper care of reptiles and amphibians readily available, both to long time keepers and people just starting out in the hobby.

This latest work by he and his co-authors, Frank Fast and Allen Repashy, is one of his best and most ambitious works yet. In addition to the main authors, the information in this book has been compiled from many of the other top gecko keepers/breeders in the the U.S. and Europe. The book covers all six species and 2 subspecies of Rhacodactylus, giving descriptions of each, and excellent information on all aspects of their husbandry and breeding. Everything from nutrition, caging, breeding and much more are covered in great detail. In addition, the book contains some of the latest information on the habitat and ecology of these animals, along with numerous beautiful pictures of the different forms and color morphs of the geckos and their habitats.

This book is also an excellent companion volume for anyone lucky enough to own the now out of print Rhacodactylus - Biology, Natural History and Husbandry by Robert Seipp and Friedrich Wilhelm Henkel. The new book updates and greatly expands on much of the information presented in the earlier book.

I would highly recommend Rhacodactylus: The Complete Guide to their Selection and Care to not only those of us that work with, or want to work with these animals, but also to anyone who just wants to know more about these beautiful and amazing creatures.

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Introduction to the Newest Major School of Therapy.......2007-01-31

Alice Morgan's 2000 What Is Narrative Therapy? An Easy-to-Read Introduction does exactly what the title promises in in providing a wonderfully accessible introduction to the newest major approach to therapy.

Alice Morgan has been a member of the highly regarded Dulwich Centre international teaching faculty in Adelaide, South Australia for a number of years. She crystallized her years of teaching and counseling experience in the highly readable book for those graduate students, therapists, consultants, coaches and counselors who really want to practice Narrative Therapy. At only 136 pages, Ms. Morgan provides a concise compendium of Narrative ideas as they had developed up to the year of its publication, 2000.

The book is outlined in two main sections. Part One- "What is narrative therapy?" covers the basic concepts and practices. Readers are introduced to the narrative metaphor and how people understand and live life through stories. Stories are what clients tell in the therapeutic context. This section illustrates how we help clients tell their stories richly, without shame. Ms. Morgan discusses the practice of externalized conversations of separating the person from the problem and clear ideas for tracing the history of the problem, exploring its effects, deconstruction, discovering unique outcomes, and naming an alternative story.

Part Two-Thickening the Alternative Story- covers the more recent developments in Narrative Therapy: Re-membering conversations, therapeutic documentation, therapeutic letters, rituals and celebrations, expanding the conversations, outsider-witness groups and definitional ceremonies.

It is richly illustrated with bulleted points and case examples as well as examples of narrative art, letters, documents and rituals. All clinicians can benefit from the innovative, creative and collaborative approaches that are so clearly presented in this elegant book.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars THE book leopard gecko keepers must buy.......2007-06-02

This book is very accessible for all audiences interested in leopard geckos as captive animals. It's inexpensive considering the contents and should be purchased by all leopard gecko keepers. There is far thicker coverage than top breeder websites offer. Some of the information will be helpful to persons using these animals in a lab setting for behavioral and physiological research.

The chapter on commercial breeding is brief and sparse considering all the details one must evaluate to start a business, and should be used as a very modest supplement. The chapter on natural vivaria and community enclosures seems incomplete. The final chapter, on medical issues, is nothing compared to Mader's big book or the like, but it will get you started on what to fear and how to avoid more common problems in leopard geckos. There are more grammatical errors in this book than I'd like to see considering its overall caliber.

The heart of this book - on setting up for, breeding, and rearing leopard geckos - is what makes this book jump to the top of everyone's lists. The basic genetics chapters will help breeders learn to plan optimally for new projects. The coverage of color phases is already outdated, with a dominant gene - the "enigma" - having made ready appearance since the book's publication. Tremper himself has exhibited at least three new recessive color strains in leopard geckos post-publication! In this book's defense, only quick-release magazine articles stand a chance of keeping up with this rapidly-advancing facet of leopard gecko herpetoculture.

If you are looking for natural history, buy "The Eyelash Geckos" (Seufer, Kaverkin & Kirshner 2005) instead - it's more elaborate and attempts to address regional variation in the species. "The Herpetoculture of Leopard Geckos" is, and will long be, THE book on captive leopard geckos.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous book for the leopard gecko lover!!.......2007-06-02

I have read several books on Leopard Geckos; this is the one for the serious Leopard Gecko fan!! Lots of information on breeding, newer morphs, illnesses, etc. Even though it's a bit pricey, it's a good investment and a great read.

I sat down began to read.Once I started I could not put it down. The book is a masterpiece. To me it is the Encyclopedia of Leopard Geckos. While reading the book it felt as if The book was alive, every thing was described in such detail. The remarkable close up illustrations of various Gecko colors are unbelieveable.A must for every one. Finally justice for the Leopard Geckos. All you will need to know about this wonderful animal.

5 out of 5 stars The Best of the Best.......2005-08-13

This definately has to be the single greatest book ever written on leos. Anyone who is tired of false rumors, internet "experts", and forum newbies should get this book. I've had leos for ten years, and I still haven't been able to put this down. However, I believe that any newbie could easily understand it and I 100% recommend this book to anyone remotely interested in leos, new keepers and old alike.

Book Description

A riveting account of the unexpected relationship between nature and scientific design.

"Study nature, love nature, stay close to nature. It will never fail you." When Frank Lloyd Wright said this, he probably wasn't envisioning self-cleaning surfaces, the photonic crystal, or Velcro. But nature has indeed yielded such inventions for those scientists and engineers who heeded the architect's words.

The cutting-edge science of bio-inspiration gives way to architectural and product designs that mimic intricate mechanisms found in nature. In Peter Forbes's engaging book we discover that the spiny fruits of the cocklebur inspired the hook-and-loop fastener known as Velcro; unfolding leaves, insect wings, and space solar panels share similar origami folding patterns; the self-cleaning leaves of the sacred lotus plant have spawned a new industry of self-cleaning surfaces; and cantilever bridges have much in common with bison spines.

As we continue to study nature, bio-inspiration will transform our lives and force us to look at the world in a new way. 69 illustrations.

5 out of 5 stars THE GECKO'S FOOT draws direct links between bioresearch and consumer interests.......2006-10-15

Bio-engineering builds intricate structures based on nature's properties, using 'wet' self-assembly techniques of nature - and this new science is explored rarely for general audiences, making THE GECKO'S FOOT: BIO-INSPIRATION-ENGINEERING NEW MATERIALS FROM NATURE a winning discussion. From the origins of Velcro in the notorious spiny cocklebur to how self-cleaning leaves fostered self-cleaning surface inventions, THE GECKO'S FOOT draws direct links between bioresearch and consumer interests.

4 out of 5 stars British English.......2006-08-28

Be aware that this was originally published in Britain, and few, if any, of the "Britishisms" are Americanised (or is that Americanized?). An example is the British "tip": this should have been changed to "garbage dump" for the American edition.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting topic........2006-08-15

This book is about bio-inspiration for human technology. It is a very interesting subject, but I had some problems with the execution. For example, the chapters seemed to jump arounds a bit, I didn't get a sense of "flow" from chapter to chapter. There were also some factual errors, the most noticable to me being that "helicopters don't fly in the grand canyon". Since I have done so on a tour, I know this statement to be false. Additionally, the author doesn't go very deeply into the science behind the topics he covers. I suppose he may have just been trying to keep it simple, but anyone buying this book is probably a science nerd, and a little more technical information would be welcome.

5 out of 5 stars Fairly unique topic, Well-told.......2006-06-21

In one of the few books ("Pulse" is another good choice) that focus on bio-inspired processes and products, Forbes explains some interesting applications inspired by lotus, desert beetles, spider silk, and a whole bunch of other examples from Nature. Each chapter focuses on one specific product or theme and hence is fairly independent of the other chapters and can be essentially read in any specific order. The discussion does sometimes may get too technical for a non-science background reader, especially some of the diagrams. However, the discussion in itself is very clear and the reader obtains a good sense of appreciation of the products being envisaged from a particular "inspiration". Excellent information. A must read.

Shredderman #3 Meet the Gecko
Shredderman #3 Meet the Gecko is about this kid named Nolan Byrd getting to go meet the gecko, his favorite T.V. superhero whose real name is Chase Morton. When before he goes he finds out his enemy Alvin "Bubba" Bixby the bully is going to meet the gecko or Chase Morton. Find out the adventures he goes through.
Overall I'd give this book 5 out of 5 stars because it's a great book for kids of all ages who like to read chapter books. It's very adventurous. I highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Shredderman - All Books in this Series.......2007-02-13

We absolutely loved these books. My son is almost 10 and we read them togehter, Although these are very easy reading for my son's age, we read them together because we enjoy them more that way. We both laugh out loud and really got into the stories. Often we ended up missing the absolute, latest possible bedtime curfew because we just HAD to read on! We would be very interested in other book by this author -- although it seems that her others are geared toward girl readers.

5 out of 5 stars Shredderman succeeds in turning reluctant readers into fans!.......2007-02-07

I am always trying to find books for my reluctant reader 9 year old. I found this book (actually the first in the series) on a list of "best books" created by kids. It is a winner! The level is good for 2nd to 4th grade.

5 out of 5 stars Hooray for the Underdog! .......2006-05-19

This is such a great series for boys aged 6-10 especially because it's an awkward time for them as they are growing and feeling sensitive about bullies. My seven year old has read books one and two and in the middle of book three. This series is based around a character named Nolan, who is a 3rd grade computer nerd. He is picked on daily and made fun of until one day he realizes that it doesn't take muscles and popularity to over-power these pests. He becomes an unlikely hero known as "Shredderman," who documents the work of bullies and brings them to justice. This series has lot's of comic mischief and displays a character who is genuinely a do-er of good deeds for all and a morally outstanding child. This series is perfect for intermediate readers, it is strewn with pictures in each chapter which helps if you have an easily frustrated or impatient reader. I think this series is fantastic because it makes it OK to not be the biggest or flashiest kid in class. You'll fall in love with Nolan because he's just an everyday kid who wants to do good in school, obey his parents, and not only doesn't let people beat him down, but prevents those bullies from cornering other victims. Yeah, Nolan! I'm root'en for you kid!

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous series.......2005-11-29

This entire series (my 9 year old son has not yet read the 4th book) if terrific. The books are entertaining, humorous and fast paced. Nolan has problems that any elementary school boy might face - like being a nerd or facing a bully. Nolan handles his problems in a unique but clever way by using his computer geek skills. As a parent, I am thrilled with the moral lessons that can be found in each of these books - using brains is better than using force, your parents may not be as awful as you thought, all kids have the potential to be heroes, kids should strive for truth and justice... Buy this series for your kids. They will LOVE it - and so will you.

3 out of 5 stars A Must Read For New & Old Gecko Owners........2005-07-29

This book has many nice gecko pictures (some not of leopard geckos)except for the brutal pictures of geckos being eaten by creepy predators like gigantic spiders and scorpians. Don't worry, the pictures are in the back (or more specifically, page 55). Because of those pictures, it's not the best book for young children that don't understand "The Circle Of Life".
Besides the pictures, it has the perfect amount of information for old and new gecko owners. The author talks to you like a best friend and each chapter is useful in some way.
1.Choosing A Leopard Gecko
2.Housing Leopard Geckos
3.Food and Water (WARNING MICE LOVERS: This has pics of baby mice being eaten by geckos. Don't worry, baby mice for food is optional.)
4.Breeding
5.Health (and how to cure the problems if they happen)
6.Other Geckos (this is where the bad pics are!)
And a glossary.
Besides the interesting pics that can break a heart and the health problems that will make you a tiny bit nervous for your gecko's health, it's a brilliant book that makes you feel like a friend of the author and a good gecko owner!!!

3 out of 5 stars Handeling.......2005-02-20

The information is great minus one the, the handleing section. When i got my leopard gecko, i never read any books. I went to the pet store and talked to them. Everytime i was there i held my Emeril (thats my geckos name). OK, so yes they have sensitive tails and sharp nails, but they dont get caught in fabric that easily. I have had mine for 3 years and have held him and let him walk all over me and my bed and teh counter. and he is fine. still with his tail, and all his fingers. So please, hold your gecko and ignore tht section!

5 out of 5 stars Very Helpfull!!.......2001-05-26

I've just recently perchased a leopard gecko and bought this book with high expectations! And they were fullfiled! Great book

4 out of 5 stars Very informative for those who know little.......2000-11-11

I orignally purchased this book for my brother who is an avid leopard gecko fan and wanted to breed his geckos. I found it very informative from a beginners standpoint, but I thought there would be more on breeding and less on 'other types of geckos'. Either way, it was my bit of fun learning for the day!

5 out of 5 stars Good News for Geckos and Their Owners.......2000-03-28

I purchased this book and the first of my three leopard geckos 18 months ago. It has served me very well with clear practical guidelines for setting up a gecko-friendly environment, providing good day to day care, identifying and dealing with health problems, breeding. The book also provides interesting background information about geckos. It is well-written and nicely designed with many attractive color photographs. Ray Hunziker appears to have the well-being of both geckos and owners in mind: He tells you that geckos don't like to be handled and suggests you handle them as little as possible. He provides a wide range of choices for the environment and the care of geckos, accommodating owners' differing esthetics and budgets.

My copy of the book went to school with a grandchild and has not returned, so I am about to purchase a second copy. One of my female geckos is laying eggs, so I need my Hunziker.

This an exceptionally useful and attractive guide.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for reticent readers.......2005-09-20

My son (9) loved this book! I am thrilled because he'd usually rather play sports than sit down and read a book. I met Mr. Hale at a conference recently and was impressed by his intelligence, wit and love of writing for children. Most books mean different things to different people, and some people approach a book, an author or a particular subject with a personal agenda, emotional baggage or ill-conceived notions. The Malted Falcon is a fun story that will delight children with its humor and creative characterizations. Thankfully, children usually appoach books with open minds and objectivity --unlike some 'wiser' adults.

5 out of 5 stars Amusing take-offs of classic hard-boiled detective fare.......2005-09-13

Kids who enjoy the Time Warp Trio and other volumes with wise-cracking characters will enjoy the Bruce Hale books. I'm not sure why another reviewer felt compelled to give this series one star; he also went to the trouble of repeating the identical review for every book in the series. If he disliked the first one so much, one wonders why--and if--he read the others.

4 out of 5 stars Funny - Great for kids!.......2005-08-14

I don't understand why Smith doesn't like the Chet Gecko series and felt it necessary to type the same line on the page of every book in the series. I am reading number seven in the series and they have all been great. I am now twelve and I still enjoy them. The Malted Falcon was a particular favorite because I laughed all the way through. If you like funny stories with a little mystery mixed in, these are for you.

Chet Gecko is on the case. A client, Viola, is running for student council president. Unfortunately, some one is not only trying to stop her, but the rest of the people running. I loved this book because it was full of suspense and fun, too. I love the other books by this author as well.

Book Description

He knows the doctor did it, but has no proof and can't get any behind bars. While in jail he learns about Donna, a woman in trouble who desperately needs to be rescued. She is the victim of the same doctor who has stolen his wife. It has been a long time since his days in the violent Vietnamese jungle, a long time since he's had to call on skills he'd put to rest. He's rusty, he tells himself, but not useless. He has to escape, has to rescue both Donna and his wife, has to save them from a horrible fate. However the doctor is as evil as Lucifer himself and calls forth an ancient horror to end Jim's life, once and for all. Jim escapes from jail and goes after the doctor with the police hot on his trail. He knows what's after him, but he has no idea about what's waiting ahead.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Creepy.......2007-03-10

Gecko is a great story. Without a doubt the first half is a 5 star read. The second half is less suspenseful, and I would give 4 stars for an average of 4 and a half. Jim Monday is a Vietnam vet who is used to killing. However, after the death of his best friend in what are mysterious circumstances, Jim begins to notice little green geckos everywhere. Jim knows there is some connection between these geckos and the strange German man who has stolen his wife from him. To compound the problem, Jim either has the conscious of a young Australian woman trapped in his brain, which he has a week to save before the murder of her physical body, or he is merely going insane. It is hard to tell which would be preferable.

The tension builds until Jim discovers that some of the geckos are not so little - and then the book gets really gory.

Another great read from Bootleg Press. Buy this book for a thrill.

4 out of 5 stars A spellbinder with a few flaws.......2006-09-20

"Monopoly" Jim Monday went to Viet Nam, became an excellent soldier, and did severe damage to the Viet Cong. He kept sane by playing Monopoly almost constantly. Then, the Viet Cong captured him, and he survived that ugliness by playing Monopoly -- in his head. When he finally was freed, he came home to the United States, and played Monopoly, but on a big scale. He went into real estate, did very well, and eventually went to politics. He also got married, and was very happy.

Okay, this is a horror story, so it can't end there. Actually, that's where the story starts. His wife falls in love with Dr. Bernd Kohler, a plastic surgeon, and wants to divorce Jim. On the way to a meeting with his future ex-wife, her boyfriend, and her lawyer, Jim is accompanied by his best from from childhood, who is also a lawyer. As they all approach the meeting place, a car flies around the corner, and a voice in Jim's head yells, "Jump back!" and he does -- only to see the car hit and kill his lawyer-friend. Jim looks up, sees Dr. Kohler grinning, and tries to pummel Kohler senseless. This gets him incarcerated, but the police begin to believe that Jim's suspicion that Dr. Kohler might have arranged the mis-aimed murder attempt against Jim, might not be paranoia.

Still, we have no horror, just ugliness. Well, that voice in Jim's head that said, "Jump Back!" actually belongs to Donna, a young Maori woman in New Zealand, who might be dead or very much in trouble of some kind.

By the time the story is done, a lot of people are dead, in the U.S. and in New Zealand. Little green geckos are seen often, and so is an enormous man-eating gecko. We also encounter slave-trading, torture, pornography-makers, and assassins. And, behind it all, is a generations-old Maori legend.

This is a well-written, very fast-paced story with interesting characters and some nice supernatural touches. Once you start, it's hard to stop. It is horror, and it's a fast, fun read.

So, why not five stars? In my opinion, the violence is more graphically-described than necessary, pushing the story toward the edge of becoming a "slasher" story. The same is true for the sexual scenes: they are more explicit than what I look for in a great story. The excessively-depicted violence and sexuality became slight detractors for me.

It is a good book, though. Have fun, keep the lights on, and sell all lizards you happen to own!

5 out of 5 stars GECKO makes the Komodo Dragon look like a poodle........2006-07-22

Horror, just the way I like it. This was the first of Jack Priest's books I have read and I was not disappointed. I won't go into a narrative of what the book is about, as several others have already done that much better than I. But let me say the creature of the title is a frightening, relentless monster that leaves a very bloody, and uncompromising trail of bodies as it is unleashed upon the unsuspecting characters, who find themselves in a maelstrom of intense terror.

There is one particular element to this book which struck me as one of the most original ideas I have ever seen (or read). I won't spoil it for you except to say it concerns the "connection" between the main character Jim Monday and Donna.

Jack Priest is a fresh and imaginative voice in the world of horror literature and I will be reading his books for many years to come. I hope you will too.

3 out of 5 stars Weakest Jack Priest novel, but still a lot of fun........2006-04-21

Jack Priest, Gecko (Bootleg Press, 2003)

Jack Priest writes fun books. They're not great books-- this is genre fiction, not John Donne-- but they're fast-paced, thrilling, mile-a-minute thrillers that are, for the most part, easily the equal of anything you'll find on the bestseller list. (And, can we all sing it together now?, "better than Dan Brown!")

However, every now and then Priest tries to overstep his boundaries, and things falter. In two scenes in Gecko, Priest sets himself a task that, as I mull it over, is perhaps more difficult than any I can remember seeing in thriller fiction: he tries to write about a member of one sex experiencing sex from the perspective of a member of the other sex. Rough, I tell you. You can cut a guy a few points of slack for failing. And he does; both scenes read like romance-novel clich? catalogues. Priest is better when he's dishing out the action.

Rest assured, there's no shortage of action to be found here. Jim Monday, a Vietnam vet turned real estate millionaire, is on his way to a meeting with his lawyer and best friend when said lawyer and best friend is mowed down by a hit and run driver. Monday's soon-to-be-ex wife and her new boyfriend, a scary German doctor-type named Gernd Kohler, are across the street. Monday knows that Kohler was involved somehow in the hit-and-run, and attacks him. Monday is quickly jumped and arrested by police detectives Washington and Walker, but on their way back to the station, the car is shot at. Washington and Walker are starting to buy Monday's story that Kohler's behind it all, but the cops are still pretty sure that nothing at all is as it seems.

If you've already read a Jack Priest novel, you don't need me to tell you that the word that best describes them is "satisfying." If you haven't, you might be better served starting with Priest's first novel, Ragged Man, for there are a few scenes to be found here that you'll get an extra kick out of if you've already digested that one. (There's also a character common to the two novels who's a lot more fun in Gecko if you've already read Ragged Man.) But, one way or the other, if you like adrenaline, you're probably going to like this. ***

5 out of 5 stars OKAY SO I MIGHT BUY SOME MORE HORROR.......2006-02-23

This book was given to me by a friend who is bang into Stephen King, Dean Koontz, James Herbert etc. etc. I AM NOT!

Jim Monday is an ex Vietnam vet whos wife has done the dirty on him. A murder, a spell in jail, and hopeless hopeless odds, as Monday attempts to triumph over an evil doctor, whilst on the run from the cops.

Well what can I say, I read it in three days. I measure a good book by the time it takes to read. Three weeks and it's lousy, a week means it's prety good.

Preist is a master of the horror genre, yet at the same time he brings a little fun and humour into the pages of this fine book.
