"Beep! Beep! Sheep in a jeep on a hill that's steep."
This story, much like the jeep, gathers momentum from page one. When five foolish sheep cram into one jeep, their high spirits and occasional lack of foresight (like forgetting to steer) combine to make a riotous, if ill-fated, road trip. Plummeting over a hill, tumbling into a mud puddle, yelping for help, these muttonheads just can't get their act together, much to the delight of young readers.

Nancy Shaw's Seussian rhymes are guaranteed to tickle every reader's funny bone, while providing a great little learning tool, as well. Who wouldn't want to learn how to read, after hearing lines like this: "Jeep goes splash! Jeep goes thud! Jeep goes deep in gooey mud!" Well-loved illustrator Margot Apple humorously captures the dopey expressions and preposterous predicaments of Shaw's sheep. More wild and woolly misadventures can be found in any of Shaw and Apple's other sheepish titles, including Sheep on a Ship and Sheep Take a Hike. (Ages 2 to 7) --Emilie Coulter

Book Description

What could be better than a misadventure from that rambunctious flock of sheep in board-book form? Two! Now sized perfectly for even the smallest hands, two of Nancy Shaw and Margot Apple's enchanting titles from their sheep series are board books. In Sheep in a Jeep, the hapless flock goes for a drive in the country. In Sheep in a Shop, the sheep are off to the store in search of the perfect birthday gift. With these muttonheads, a normal outing is sure to turn into a joyous lark. Rhyming text and disarming illustrations make these shear delights!

5 out of 5 stars It's a Jeep thing..........2007-09-10

As a Jeep owner, when I saw this book at my library's book fair - I just HAD to get it for my toddler. A year later, we still love reading it. The rhymes are great and so memorable that we find ourselves using some of the lines whenever a mishap occurs in our daily lives. Whether you're a Jeep owner or not - this book is a MUST have!

5 out of 5 stars Sheep in a Jeep.......2007-08-11

Good basic rhyming vocabulary with plenty of humor. Nicely done lesson on consequences of not focusing on the task at hand. Good clear illustrations. Good to hear now with lots of sound effects and to read alone later.

5 out of 5 stars Beep Beep...........2007-06-11

Excellent rhyming, good morals, sturdy construction. The favorite book of my 18 month old, for almost a year now. Allows kids to empathize and show emotions as the characters traverse their misadventure. I wish I could give it 6 stars.

5 out of 5 stars ANOTHER WINNER FOR THESE TWO FOLKS........2007-05-12

The team of Shaw and Apple is seemingly a winner and they are in the process of creating a collection of children's classics. With this offering, our funny band of sheep take a jeep ride and you can only imagine the results, or better yet, let these two ladies imagine for you. The rhyming text is one that will stick with you and you will find many of the lines going through your head later in the day after a couple of readings with your child. The illustrations are of their usualy high quality and, as always, go perfectly with the text. This is a good one to read to your child one on one or is a great one to read to the entire class. I do home these two keep turning them out.

5 out of 5 stars Laugh and Laugh.......2007-01-23

I read this to my 4 month old and he loves it. It rhymes, has lots of onomatopoeia, and plenty of opportunities for adding sound effects and emotional expression.

Stop Stealing Sheep, Second Edition is a unique, entertaining, and educational tour through the most basic unit of written communication: type. World-renowned type experts Erik Spiekermann and E.M. Ginger explain in everyday laymen's terms what type is and how you can use it to enhance the legibility, meaning, and aesthetic level of your work. They elegantly touch on all aspects of typography, including the history and mechanics of type, how to train your eye to recognize and choose typefaces, and how to use space and layout to improve overall communication. Because type reaches across all boundaries and continually evolves, this edition is revised and updated to include new chapters on Web typography and other forms of online text display. You need no previous knowledge of typography to enjoy this book and apply its tenets to your daily work. A perennial bestseller since the first edition was published in 1993, Stop Stealing Sheep will draw you in with its beautiful design and layout, which makes liberal use of more than 200 illustrations and photographs.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Overly basic and poorly organized.......2007-07-15

I am a relative newbie to the study of typography, but still this book is far too basic. I learned a single fact which I had always been curious about - that the letterforms of smaller-point type are different from (not just smaller than) larger-point type in the same face - and that is a pretty elemental thing that most people interested in type are already aware of.
More suprisingly, there are some serious issues with the layout and typography of this book. Some sidebars, which are in small type, are set in yellow. Small yellow print on white paper? Surely a legibility no-no. Also, each page serves as its own mini-essay (and I do mean MINI; on most spreads, only the right-hand page has any text, and even then sometimes only half a page) but lacks a headline, so the reader has no idea what the page is about.
The only useful element in this book is the various type examples, which could easily be found elsewhere.

4 out of 5 stars Good Introduction to Typography.......2007-06-13

I read this book for my first typography class at design school. It does a good job of giving the reader a feeling for different styles and personalities of letterforms. It is also written in a fun style that makes the book entertaining and easy to read for those just entering the design field.

4 out of 5 stars Good type initiation book.......2007-01-02

The first time I saw this book it was in a fellow designer's bookshelf and I thought the title was humorous and very well targeted. Anybody who knows type understand the joke in "anyone who letterspaces blackletter type would steal sheep" and if you haven't heard of the quote nor get the joke then you are probably a type beginner who could use this book.

I don't agree with other reviews stating that the book is too basic and so it serves no purpose. Yes, it is basic, but 170+ pages of good basic introductory material. I would recommend it for student graphic designers, artists and multimedia designers who work with type but are not necessarily drawn to it. This book gives you the basics with a lot of examples and a humoristic approach that should keep you entertained long enough for you to grasp the ideas.

This is not a reference and it doesn't talk about advanced matters, but it will provide a tremendous wealth of knowledge to anybody new to type specifics. Sure one could get the basics from a 7-page pamphlet, but design is about making sense of the ideas and I can't imagine a beginner understanding all these concepts without the help of an array of examples such as the ones contained in this small book.

1 out of 5 stars worthless...........2006-08-02

This is without a doubt the worst reference on typography that I have ever read. It is filled with useless metaphors and examples. I really expected more from the Adobe Press.

4 out of 5 stars 5 Quick Truths.......2006-01-24

1. Entertainment, not resource. Provides insight into the uses of type, as well as a brief history of many different typefaces. Robert Bringhurst's "The Elements of Typography" (0881792063) is a better book for those in need of a resource.

2. Aimed at a less experienced audience. Discusses type in relation to emotions, legibility, etc, though not in great depth. It does a great job of showing a beginner how important type is, showing a large number of examples of typefaces, and, possibly, inspiring them to look into the subject more thoroughly.

3. The quote used in the title did not come from the authors, it came from F. Goudy in 1936. Also, most of the fonts mentioned in the book cannot be found in Adobe's font library, some are over 100 years old. The book is not trying to sell you anything.

4. The book itself is a great example of what can be accomplished with type. It also contains many instances of type being used to great effect, while explaining how and why it works so well.

5. As someone interested in type, you could do much worse than this book. However, its simple nature, though complete and well-constructed, whets the appetite more than actually satisfying it.

Book Description

This is Russell.

Sometimes Russell is just a little bit out of step with the rest of the flock.

All the sheep are falling asleep -- except Russell.

What's a sheep to do?

Russell tries everything ... until, at last, he falls asleep.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Fun, but ..........2007-05-19

This IS a fun, cute book, but it really bothers me that Russell tries to sleep in the trunk of an old car. This is not a good example to be setting for kids - every once in a while a child tries this and gets stuck, sometimes dying before being found.

5 out of 5 stars Russell the Sheep.......2007-05-15

I completely relate to Russell. He's a sheep with a simple goal: to get a good night's sleep. He does everything he can to fall asleep: he wears a hat to keep his head warm, he puts the hat over his eyes to make it darker, he tries ear plugs, he moves to a different spot, and so on. Then in the morning none of the other sheep understand why he's still in bed or why he's so groggy later.

If I were a sheep, I'd be Russell. So many nights I end up pacing the halls, trying to sleep on the couch upstairs, meditation and even, counting sheep. I even wear a night cap to bed, though not as fanciful a one as Russell's: mine is black.

5 out of 5 stars Beautifully illustrated with equally wonderful storyline!.......2007-04-07

My son LOVES this book! It epitomizes life for him right now....always resisting naps and bedtime. Reading about Russell's inability to fall asleep is mutually hilarious for the two of us! The pictures are SO vivid, soft, and perfectly done; the moment I picked this book up at the bookstore I knew I had to go online to Amazon and order a copy for our collection (much less expensive)! Every kiddo deserves this one....and it's a fun read for parents, too.

4 out of 5 stars Creative and Fun:.......2006-11-10

I bought this book for my three year old daughter due to the large scale, full color, creative illustrations found within. I was satisfied at the safe content of the story as well as the over all visuals.

I read about this book in a parenting magazine. My kids (3 and 5) love this book. It is really cute.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars a memorable book for toddlers.......2007-10-08

I highly recommend this for your bookshelf. Our 2 year old son can supply most of the words to the book. We just have to start him out with "here's the ... and here's the ..." and he'll fill in the rest. When we get to the last few pages and he knows he's about to find the green sheep -- he squeals with delight.

5 out of 5 stars great for pre readers.......2007-10-01

My sons (ages 3 and 5) love this book. They can read along and love when we get to "but where is the green sheep?".

I highly recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME!.......2007-07-30

My daughter absolutely LOVES this book. She has memorized the words and now reads this book to us! We love it!

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous book for my 3 year old.......2007-06-08

I was originally turned on to this book because The Children's Theatre in Minneapolis had a short play based on "Where is the Green Sheep?" It is a fabulous book -- very catchy phrasing and cute pictures. My daughter loves to "read" it now that she has it memorized.

5 out of 5 stars Sheepees!.......2007-05-12

My two year old loves this book about "sheepees" and my almost five year old loves that he can read it to his brother. We all enjoy yelling, "But where is the green sheep?" Our only complaint is we wish there were more different colored sheep in the book like there are on the cover.

Book Description

Because Joshua the Lamb was different, he often felt left out-like on the wintry night when he was left behind in a Bethlehem stable. This touching tale helps kids see that even if they're different, God has a unique plan for their lives.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful illustrations........2007-07-04

This is a nice book. Very pretty and easy to read for a young child. Great story.

5 out of 5 stars God's perfect design finally told.......2007-05-12

Being the mother of a physically challenged son, I absolutely love this story. Although it brings tears to my eyes everytime I read it, the story never fails to fill my heart with hope and renewal. There is a God who sees the Big Picture and who knows how all the "Joshua's" in the world are needed to help carry out His perfect plan. It is a reamarkable story that teaches us all not to pray for perfection, but for purpose.

4 out of 5 stars The Crippled Lamb by Max Lucado.......2007-04-19

Max Lucado, along with, Jenna, Andrea, & Sara Lucado, create a story many children can relate to. In The Crippled Lamb, Joshua - a lamb - is different than the other sheep. He has no parents, and he is crippled. His only friend is an old cow named Abigail. She often reminds him that God has a special place for those like him. When the shepherds come gather the sheep to walk to the next valley, Joshua must stay behind. The others laugh and say mean things to him. Josh and Abigail are both in for a surprise later that night, when they are awakened by a woman and a child lying in the stables with them. Josh lies next to the baby (Jesus) to keep him warm. He soon learns that even though he may not fit in with the rest of the sheep, God did have a special place for him. Illustrated by Liz Bonham.

What I Liked: Most everything. This is a sweet book. It almost made my ten year old daughter cry. She thought it was sad how the others treated Josh. (Much like the way kids treat one another)

What I Disliked: Near the end of the story, the author implies that animals can pray to God. Again, I am there to teach my children differently. It's an easy fix when reading with your children. (It is so important that you know what your children are reading).

Overall Review: Very Good.

Age Appeal: 4-8

5 out of 5 stars Excellent story for children of all ages.......2007-01-29

I had heard this story read at a church function and so enjoyed it that I wanted to purchase a copy for each of my childrens families. It is such a heart warming story that no matter what you may feel is wrong with you, the Lord loves us all equally.

5 out of 5 stars What I think of The Crippled Lamb (Board Book edition).......2007-01-10

Hi, I'm StoryMaker. The Lucados' The Crippled Lamb stars a young lamb with spots named Joshua. Joshua was born different from the other sheep. One of his legs just didn't work right, and he had to limp everywhere instead of running and jumping like his fellow sheep. His best friend - an old cow named Abagail - said that God has a special place for those who feel left out. It's hard for Josh to beleive sometimes, even though he always wants to. One day, the other sheep are going to a greener, grassier land, but Joshua can't. However, Josh soon discovers why he has a bad leg. I have no idea why it says Ages 1-5 on the Proof of Purchase. This story is charming and sweet for all ages young and old. The paintings aren't exactly perfect, but they are still splendid in their way. I especially like the final illustration and sentence. It is just a good book. I reccomend it. Signed, StoryMaker. "Gotta trust the kid's review!"

I have loved the book Sheep Out Eat by Nancy Shaw since I was little and my Mom read it to me, so a few years ago when I found this book in a store I was very exicited. This book is cute and funny and even though I am 14 I still love to read it!

4 out of 5 stars Sheep on a ship.......2003-09-26

The book "Sheep on a ship" is about some sheep that try to sail. The book shows you what happens when sheep try to sail. The sheep have a rough ride but in the end everything looks up for them. The story really doesn't have a lesson except that you shouldn't let your sheep try to sail. I don't think everybody could read this story; it should be read to kids the age of one to two.

3 out of 5 stars OK.......2003-07-21

I guess I like the "Sheep in a Jeep" and "Sheep Out to Eat" books a little better than this one. Maybe I've just grown a little tired of them? I wish I could have given it 3.5 stars. I would give the others in the series a 4.

We've had this book for a long time, probably 8 years, since we got it as a gift when our first son was born. Since that time, we have re-read this many, many times. It's truly one of my favorites, and it turned us on to Melody Carlson as a favorite author. I'm trying to collect all her books, but we especially like this one and It's Not Funny, I've Lost My Money as well as The Other Brother. We also have the books in her series, "Just Like Jesus Said". Highly recommended! And the illustrations are great, too!

5 out of 5 stars Very cute!.......2003-04-24

This is a very nice book. I like how the story didn't veer off from the original Biblical version the way a lot of Bible story books do. Luke 15 1-7 is a very important parable and this book presents it in a gentle, Christ centered way. The illustrations are lovely, the story was sweet and accurate. Makes a lovely bedtime storybook for young children.

4 out of 5 stars An entertaining teaching story.......2002-06-06

The colorful illustrations and the light-hearted rhyming carry this book effortlessly along. And, I like how Jesus' words are presented on the last page of the book.

Product Description

In Growing Up With Loukoumi by Nick Katsoris, a lamb named Loukoumi (Greek for sweet ) struggles with what she wants to be when she grows up. She considers becoming a firefighter, a judge or a doctor. As she walks along, she encounters her friends including Gus the bear, Fistiki the cat, Dean the dog and Marika the monkey. Each friend explains to Loukoumi that she can be whatever her heart desires. If she wants to be a singing star, a policeman or even an Oscar winning actress, then she can do it! The key is that she must always believe in herself, stay positive and work hard, because if you believe in yourself your dreams will come true! The CD version of the book (included) features the voices of singing legend Gloria Gaynor, (Grammy Award winner for I Will Survive) Oscar-winning actress Olympia Dukakis, national CBS correspondent and MarketWatch anchor Alexis Christoforous, American Idol Heartthrob Constantine Maroulis of American Idol fame, and Guiding Light actor Frank Dicopoulos. Each voices a character that encourages Loukoumi to reach for her dreams, which is especially meaningful when being heard from such inspirational and successful adults. The package also includes an original song from Gloria Gaynor called, Believe.

5 out of 5 stars an excellent message for children.......2007-03-09

The important message of "If you beleive in yourself, you can become whatever you want to be" is so simple yet essential. Children will love to travel this journey with the darling little lamb Loukoumi, and learn something valuable in the process. A great book for parents to read with their kids.

5 out of 5 stars Another great book by this author.......2006-12-24

Great book for young children. You will not be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Educational Book.......2006-11-18

This book is an excellent boost to any child's dreams. It is an inspiring book and has a positive message encouraging a child to go after their dreams and to work hard and that anything is possible. I highly recommend this book to any child. Children need positive enforcers in their life. Constantine Maroulis from American Idol, also the star in two Broadway shows, "The Wedding Singer" and "Jaquels Brel" beginning Jan 9th in New York, is funny, and enlightening to the kids who love him.

5 out of 5 stars You can be what you dream.......2006-11-08

This is a favorite in my classroom! Loukoumi explores many jobs, from farmer to singer, in this sweet story. The CD features many successful Greek people and is beautifully done. Rocker Constantine Maroulis as Farmer Gus is priceless!

Now sized perfectly for even the smallest hands, two of Nancy Shaw and Margot Apple's enchanting titles from their sheep series are board books. In Sheep in a Shop, the sheep are off to the store in search of the perfect birthday gift. With these muttonheads, a normal outing is sure to turn into a joyous lark. Rhyming text and disarming illustrations make these shear delights!

5 out of 5 stars Daughter loved it.......2007-10-02

My daughter's teacher recommended this series of books for my 6 year old. She really enjoys them and they are a great series for early readers. She found this book particularly funny.

5 out of 5 stars Sheep in a Shop.......2007-08-11

Good basic vocabulary rhyming text for reading to now and alone later. Nice nod to "Baa, baa, blacksheep..." with the three bags of wool for the ball.

5 out of 5 stars HMMM, SHEEP DO THINK...I LIKE IT!.......2007-05-12

This is another delightful book and is a part of a delightful series. The author and illustrator obviously work so well together. This time, as the title would indicate, our little herd of sheep visit a shop. They find they have not money, but unlike sheep (and so many people, when to think about it) come up with a very unique way around the problem. The rhyming text is as good as it gets and goes perfectly with the charming illustrations. The kids all seem to love this one and I must admit to enjoying it as much as they do when reading it to them. The only problem I have is that some of the rhyming lines stick in my head like a broken record, which, in a way, is sort of nice. recommend this one highly.

5 out of 5 stars Sheep in a Shop.......2007-01-30

Someones birthday is coming. They are shopping for the big day. They are looking for a birthday present. They found blocks. They buy a ball. They tried to get the ball. It fell. They got the presents and wrapped the presents. The sheep got the money. They got the presents. They cut their hair. They gave their hair to the guy in the store. They went to the birthday party and they had fun. This was a pretty good book.

5 out of 5 stars Love the Sheep. Love the Shop........2006-11-10

My 2 year old son had Sheep in a Jeep first, and I decided to add more since he has such a good time with that one, acting out the pushing of the Jeep and the weeping when the Jeep is finally beyond help. Sheep in a Shop bumped Sheep in a Jeep off his list of favorite books for awhile, although Jeep is making a comeback. He especially likes to reeaaach up like the sheep trying to get the ball, and he likes the part with the piggy bank. It renewed his interest in his own piggy bank, and we never seem to have change cluttering the counters anymore. My son will immediately ask to put it in his piggy bank whenever he sees money now. This makes my husband especially happy, as it encourages fiscal responsibility. :)
