surgery bible.......2007-03-10
This book is a must for everyone who want to upgrade his knowledge about surgery technics
Top Book.......2006-08-22
I am a final year veterinary medical student and this book is fantastic. The procedures are easy to follow and pictures are really great. It reminds me a little of Nelson & Couto (so if you like that one this book is for you!). The only thing thats not very good is the ovariohysterctomy and the castration- were kind of confusing!
Useful surgical text.......2006-03-19
This book contains excellent descriptions of most procedures required in general practice. Good diagrams and has a better orthopaedic section than other texts. Should be in library of all general practices.
Very useful for students.......2005-10-04
The book is great for students and surgery beginners. Maybe the author should include more personal tips and "secrets" in the next issue.

A vet at home.......2007-07-14
This is a great book. I have used it many times with my new kittens already. Not just a try to cure it yourself book, but explains things they can catch and helps decide whether a trip to the Dr. is needed. Whenever in doubt always go though to err on the side of caution. I will even add this to my vet tech textbooks, it will be a great help in my classes.
The best reference book.......2007-06-06
If you are doing any kind of cat rescue work THIS is the book you need! It is the best reference book I have come across, it is easy for the lay person to read and has just about every scenario you will come across as a rescuer. This has been my "Bible" for years and this updated version is even better than the last. It is especially helpful with orphaned kittens, telling you how much they should weigh, how much food they need and what you should expect developementally.
I can't recommend this book highly enough--I wish I could give it more than 5 stars!

The most used book on my shelf.......2005-10-17
Whenever I encounter a new disease, or need to refresh my memory about one I haven't seen lately, I reach for this book first. I find it to be concise, informative, and useful. While other medical texts make for good fireside or bedtime reading, this one cuts to the chase, and is useful in the midst of a busy veterinary schedule.
I use this book as my "nerd book", jotting notes in the margins when I learn something new about a disease from reading journals. Overall I am quite impressed at how up-to-date and complete the information is vis-a-vis JAVMA, the Compendium for Continuing Education, etc. I also appreciate that this book comes out in new additions often enough to keep up with the rapid changes in veterinary medicine.
must be on a vets library.......2005-09-29
very helpful in learning details about diseases and drugs we use.Easy to use the book and easy to understand.Thank you for the opportunity for me to receive this book to Turkey.
Great Resource.......2004-01-27
I got this book a couple of years ago on the advice of my mentor. This book has really helped me out in school(esp. in my Problem-Based Learning classes). It is pretty easy to understand, is very concise, and it includes many commmon and uncommon diseases of small animals. However, not all information about specific diseases is included. This resource should just be used as a starting point. The formulary is useful, as is the section about diagnostic test results. I just wish they would come out with a 5-Minute Consult-Exotics Edition
Great user-friendly reference for vet students.......2001-05-23
This book is great when you just need the down and dirty on a disease, and don't want to wade through a 50-page description in the heavy-duty references. It was also very useful during second-year, when you're just trying your hand at figuring out the diseases, and need a little confirmation of your diagnosis and treatment plans. Or, when you're totally clueless and need help get started in the right direction. Fair warning, faculty usually won't accept it as 'reference' especially if you're trying to argue a point, but during a recent open-book final, I brought mine in anyway and there was practically a mob of other students rushing over to check out one thing or another.
5 Minute Veterinary Consult: Canine and Feline (CD-ROM for W.......2001-03-24
Tilley's 5 -Minute Veterinary Consult book has been an extremely valuable asset to my library. When the CD-Rom came out, it was even more useful in that immediate and current information can be retrieved much faster than picking up a book. It is faster since topics related to a case can be searched for and reviewed with a touch of your mouse. This information can be quickly printed and given to clients to further understand their pets diagnosed condition. This printed information alone is priceless! A client that has something in hand and can follow and confirm their veterinarian's diagnosis and treatment, helps establish the trust a client needs to have in their pets doctor.
I reach for my 5- Minute Vet Consult CD-rom more than any other resource in my library. It is very accurate and has a surprising amount of detail to assist in the diagnosis, treatment and prognosis of each topic. The drug search is a very helpful formulary for those quick reference needs. The most recent CD has a good number of cytology and radiographic images attached to the topics. These can be enlarged to see more closely the great detail.
In my opinion the 5-Minute Veterinary Consult CD-Rom was one of the best reference investments for my practice. It is definitely the most utilized reference I have. Time is money and this has saved me many steps and thus time and money. Every practice needs this reference without doubt!

It's every pet owner's nightmare: suddenly your four-legged friend isn't breathing. What to do? There is no 911 for pets, so it's up to you to save a life. The First Aid Companion for Dogs & Cats is a straightforward guide that covers both major problems--CPR, heat stroke, and strangulation--and minor ones, such as swollen tails, ingrown nails, and flea allergies. Beginning with simple tests and explanations of general care issues like dehydration examinations and triage, this guide then moves on to an alphabetical listing of every possible situation, from arrow wounds to worms.
The individual sections are good for both general reading and instant assistance. Each one starts with a notice of when to call the vet--immediately, the same day, or as needed. It also lists what items from your pet's medicine chest will be needed, which may include anything from corn syrup to towels and panty hose. The information that follows this simple checklist is divided into "do this now," "special situations," "follow-up care," and "the best approach." Whenever necessary, simple sketches are included to help show proper technique, such as fashioning an instant muzzle from a pair of nylons, or how to cover a dog's head in case of an ear-flap injury. Relying frequently on common household items like antihistamines, turkey basters, Gatorade, and plastic wrap, this guide assumes most of us won't have special medical training or supplies and focuses on very specific and simple methods of helping your pet achieve the best possible care. Even more importantly, many suggestions are included on prevention of accidents--isn't it easier to get that window screen repaired than to rush your kitty to the vet after a bad fall?--Jill Lightner

I found this book a must-have for pet professionals.......2007-07-12
I own Animal Companions pet sitting service in Houston, Texas, and I found this book a must-have for pet professionals. Laid out in a format similar to a Physician's Desk Reference, you may easily and quickly (and time is always of the essence with a sick pet!) look up information based on presenting symptoms.
It is an amazing supplement to hands-on first aid training. I immediately purchased a copy of this book for myself and each of my employees, to keep in our cars right next to our pet first aid kit. I also picked up a copy to keep at home, for my own furry loved ones.
An Outstanding Mini-Encyclopedia of Pet Care.......2007-07-03
There is so much useful information in just this one volume. What's more, there is a symptom finder, allowing a quick overview of possible causes of given symptoms among dogs and cats. There are two tables of poison hazards, including one which tells what human medications should never be given to cats (although veterinarians advise that no human medications should ever be given to animals without checking with them). The animal conditions that can be helped by first aid range from life-threatening situations to such usually-minor things as constipation in cats. There are many helpful diagrams. One of them shows how to make a homemade Elizabethan collar and another one shows how to restrain a seriously-injured animal for the trip to the vet.
Good reading, good addition to your medicine cabinet........2007-02-07
We had dogs bitten by a rattlesnake. I had a dog with an allergic reaction.
What do you do? Sure, you can google up an answer, but it's nice to have this book on hand for quick reference.
It is well written and you can actually just read it cover to cover. I learned a lot.
Excellent source.......2006-11-08
I got this book to better care for my adult and senior dogs. I love that the book not only focuses on First Aid but prevention as well as recommendations for when to call the vet. The injuries and illnesses section covers everything you can think of and provides lots of background information as well as treatment. My favorite feature is the recommended medicine chest as well as dosing.

Vets as well as owners of either ferrets or rabbits will appreciate this concise guide for the diagnosis and treatment of diseases in either. A series of formatted topics address all common conditions, covering diagnosis, treatment and medication and listing topics alphabetically for quick consultation. Each condition receives an overview of the basics, diagnostic procedures, treatment options, and medications. While it's technical enough for a vet's office, owners will find it equally valuable.

Open the front cover and the first two pages you see contain the Index of Signs and Symptoms, from Abdomen (painful, swollen, distended, and tucked up) to Weight loss, Wheezing, and Whining (continual). There's a comprehensive index in back, of course, running the gamut from Abortion to Zinc-Responsive Dermatosis, which is all very useful, but when your pooch is in pain, it's great to be able to turn, with the minimum of folderol, to the page that says to relax, it's nothing a bit of extra grooming won't fix, or alternatively to hightail it over to the vet hospital. It's a wonderful reference for any dog owner, with chapters on emergencies (such as burns, dehydration, and poisoning), as well as worms, infectious diseases, skin care, and canine eyes, ears, and nose. There are chapters on the digestive, respiratory, and circulatory systems, the nervous, musculoskeletal, and urinary systems, plus dog sex, whelping, puppy pediatrics, geriatrics, and chapters on cancers and medications. In short, it covers every health dimension a dog owner might want to know more about, identifies the possible causes, helps you determine the severity of the condition, and indicates what treatments or actions to take to best insure your dog's good health. --Stephanie Gold

Saved My Dog's Life.......2007-08-21
When it comes to human coughing, we know it will get better if we're otherwise normal. I learned from this book that when a dog coughs, it is always bad. Always. I took my dog to the vet in the nick of time. The day after he was given heavy doses of antibiotics and other meds, he nearly died from not being able to breathe because of the congestion in his chest. He is a 12yo Akita so his recovery has been slow, but he is definitely improving. I have to thank the authors and publishers of this book as they made it easy to find my dog's symptoms, (symptoms are listed on the inside cover - no digging necessary) and then to determine that my dog should see the vet immediately. The only reason this book scores a 4 instead of a 5 is because my dog's nose was terribly stuffed up and I couldn't find anything relating to that in there. The caveat to this is that I only bought the book a week ago and have not had a chance to read it all. It could be in there somewhere. :o) Big book. Small price. Well worth it.
excellent resource.......2007-07-31
This is an excellent resource. It is technical but in an easy to read format. Unfortunately, the pictures are few and in black and white.
Excellent Resource.......2007-07-24
I've had my copy of this book for 10 years now and have referred to it many times. It helps me to articulate my concerns to our vet when necessary and to calm my nerves when one of my pets presents with some symptom or ailment. My vet has commented on it herself as a great resource. I'm ordering the one for horse owners as I've recently acquired my first horse and hope to be equally happy. It is better than any web site or other dogs for dummies kind of book. The best features are the Index of Signs and Symptoms, the common household medications and the fact that it doesn't just resort to the "consult your veterinarian for more information" for everything beyond fleas.
Good home reference book.......2007-07-16
I have referred to this book several times when trying to figure out what's wrong with my dog. It is user friendly and comprehensive. If it saves you a trip to the vet, then it is worth the 20 bucks already.
This book has already paid for itself!.......2007-05-30
This is hands down, the best book out there for dog care. For those hwo say it's not good for emergency situations, it's not ment that. That is when you should stop worrying about money, put down the book, and get your dog to the vet. My dog was suffering from liver disease and when he started to act a little strange and confused I looked it up and discovered he had "Hepatic Encephalopathy (HE)." I was able to call my vet and describe his symptoms and explain that I thought he was HE and the vet gave us a prescription without having to bring him in. That right there was enough to pay for the book. It is written in a way that everyone can understand and is easy to follow. I only gave it four stars because it was missing some things that I was looking for, such as syncope and more in depth with kidney disease.

Fantastic Book.......2007-05-12
Mr. Lindsay has compiled a thoroughly researched, well written tome, that is perhaps the best book on canine behavior I have ever read. Readers who enjoy detailed manuals respecting the reader's attention span, intelligence, education, literacy, and quest for knowledge will cherish Applied Dog Behavior and Training. The book is sufficient as a textbook at the graduate university level. For readers interested in learning intricately about the developmental history of domestic dogs, ontogenetics, neurophysiology, sensory physiology, canine psychology, learning theory, and training/conditioning theory this book is nonpareil. Moreover, the book is insightfully organized and formatted so it as easy to read as possible given the depth and breadth of the text and concomitant illustrations.
Nevertheless, unfortunately, Mr. Lindsay's book is not for everyone. In fact, it is probably appropriate for very few pet professionals and even fewer pet owners. The book is written tantamount to the materials utilized within a Master's or PhD program in biology, psychology, zoology or animal behavior. Although I am enthralled with the book, I believe most persons will be fatigued by the amount and complexity of information.
recertification.......2007-05-12
I did not buy this book for myself. My daughter-in-law has a kennel and needed several books to recertify as a trainer. Sorry
An Incredible Resource for Trainers & Others.......2007-04-09
The first thing to know about this book is that it is not an "easy read," but more of a textbook. That said, it is invaluable reading for professional trainers--in fact, I am on the faculty and advisory board of the Companion Animal Sciences Institute and Lindsay's books are required reading in many of our courses. The Handbook of Applied Dog Behavior and Training should appeal to canine professionals as well as anyone looking for an in-depth analysis of canine origins, neurobiology and behavior. This is the first of Lindsay's comprehensive three-volume set. It begins with the origins of dogs, covers the neurobiology of behavior and learning, and sensory abilities of dogs. The behavior section goes to great lengths describing classical and operant conditioning, the effect of aversives on behavior, and much more. A multitude of fascinating studies are referenced throughout the book. Again, although this book is more technical and dense than most on the subject, it is an invaluable resource that you will find yourself referring back to again and again.

Immense knowledgebase of info on K9 behavior.......2003-09-18
I got a new puppy about 6 months ago. This was just about a 2 year process that involved searching out a specific breed that fit my personality and lifestyle and reading piles (Probably $500 worth) of books about raising puppies, training, specific breed books, etc. Mainly because I have always been deathly afraid of owning that unruly dog would be a nightmare to have around the house.
Of the 20 books that I have, this book is by far the most in depth and well researched of all. Most books on the subject of dogs in general are short overviews that should take care of some specific needs, such as potty training, obedience, tricks, etc. This book has a culmination of 100+ years of scientific research and other case studies of not only dogs but of the behavior mentally and physically of other creatures and how they apply to dogs. There is so much information to soak in, its incredible. I read through it occasionally had to sit back in awe thinking about what i've just read and how many things make sense now.
I seriously think that most books will get 90% of dog owners by without a problem. This book is for those 10%, or breeders, trainers who need to have that extra level of knowledge. I'd compare it to needing a cupfull of knowledge and receiving 5 gallons instead.
Highly recommended.......2000-10-13
The author succesfully tries to offer a thorough and detailed view of what is known and what isn't known about dog behavior and learning. His approach is above all scientific, which doesn't mean he avoids phenomena like ESP etc., nor does he simply give a description of the autorities' viewpoints. Lindsay also carefully analyses everything commonly accepted by laymen and experts, without resorting to emotional arguments. His systematic and straightforward 'nothing to hide' approach as well as his concern to include all practices and opinions certainly makes this book an authoritative study which counterbalances a lot of 'extreme' books on dog training (like Jean Donaldsons controversial book 'the culture clash' or the Koehler books).
For everything said in the book, scientific research and logical reasoning serves as basis, and sentimentality doesn't get a chance. Lindsay clearly stresses the reasons behind behavioral tactics and leaves the choice to the reader, providing all scientific facts necessary to support your decision. His view on the use of aversives is the most enlightening and waterproof explication I've read on why, how and when to use it -- or not...
Lindsay concentrates a lot on theoretical models to understand all kinds of phenomena. He never annoyed by giving too much information. Monuments of psychology like Skinner and Thorndike are equally critically analyzed as less famous men and at all time Lindsay remains consistent in his application of a thorough scientific approach to clearify and explain.
It isn't a cheap book, but it certainly lived up to my (high) expectations. The reference section at the end of each chapter provides a good means of exploring more studies and Lindsay doesn't hesitate to give suggestion for further reading. He acknowledges without hesitation the accomplishments of other people without idealizing them (he criticizes Skinners and Thorndikes view on punishment etc.).
I think it will take a long time before a more open and thorough book on dog behavior will appear. Therefore, if you want a book that gives a complete and detailed account of what is known on dog behavior and that provides a solid basis to expand your knowledge (even very rare phenomena are treated in detail), I would certainly recommend this book. The only negative thing about it I could think of, is the price -- and even then...

A tough choice to make.......2000-11-15
The right answer to the dumb question "If you could buy only 1 book . . .?" should be "I wouldn't be a vet!" Choosing a comprehensive Small Animal Practice book, however, comes to only 2 alternatives: either Birchard & Sherding's or Morgan's. I am not considering excellent Internal Medicine texts (like Ettinger or Nelson & Couto) because, by design, they leave out important areas of the practice. Which one would you choose, then? I have a slight preference for Birchard & Sherding's (which could be influenced by the fact that I worked in the same school as them for 20 years!). Morgan's outline format occasionally is too restrictive and prevents full explanation of important concepts but it is a great text and a few chapters (like the one on Central Nervous System) are truly exceptional. Each text has its own chracteristics and strongest areas but both are outstanding. What do you do then? Do as I did; buy both! It is a bit more expensive but you will be sure that you have the very best that has been written in small animal practice. I have had no reason to repent.
