Cute Book.......2007-10-06
My 10 month old son plays with this book several times a week. I think he likes the rhymn when I read it to him. He is learning to turn pages so we bounce back and forth. His attention span is fairly short so the wonderful pictures are nice. We both enjoy this book along with others in this series.
Chewable book helps baby develop "appetite" for reading.......2007-08-25
I bought this book for my newborn because I wanted her to grow up loving to read. When she was a few months old, she loved to chew on the soft cloth pages and stare at the brightly colored pictures. Then she learned how to turn the pages. Now at 10 months, she still loves to touch the 3-D part of each page and hear me read the simple rhymes.
We love all of the different objects and textures that she can touch and explore on each page:
1) Padded aqua turtle shell
2) Shiny metallic fish
3) Ribbon used as water from a whale spout
4) Padded pink vinyl crab shell
5) Silver seahorse fin
6) Green felt octopus tentacles
7) Pink oyster shell with satin inner lining
8) Terry cloth seahorse
9) Metallic seaweed rolls
This crinkly cloth book is easy for babies to hold and great for teething. It also keeps little hands busy during car rides. Although the manufacturer recommends surface cleaning only, I've successfully washed mine inside a mesh lingerie bag on the gentle cycle. And it still looks new...
good first book.......2007-08-07
It has bright colors to attract the babies. the wordings are simple and rhyme well. my daughter loves looking at it since the age of 2 month old.
Keeps my baby's interest but has clumsy text.......2007-07-06
My daughter loves this book, it's her favorite of the Priddy cloth books. This one has enough crinkle noises and tactile items to keep her baby hands busy -it keeps her occupied for a good stretch of time. My only complaint (as with all the Priddy cloth books) is that the the actual text and rhymes have a lot to be desired. It just seems forced to make the rhyme and meter work - it ends up very clumsy. I rarely read it now as she's just very interested in holding and playing with the pages.
Awesome kids book.......2007-05-09
This book is very fun with all sorts of colors and textures. My son loves to look at it and feel the different things. It has just the right amount of words too. I own three Roger Priddy books and I am VERY happy with all of them.

Pretty good!.......2004-06-27
This graphic novel is a reprint of several old issues of "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles," and was the basis for the first TMNT movie. If you've seen the movie, you'll know how a lot of this goes - one of the turtles is ambushed (though here it is Leo, where in the movie it was Raph) and April's apartment gets trashed, and the Turtles head off into the country to at an old, dilapidated home (this time, April's instead of Casey's) in Northampton, Massachusetts (the birthplace of TMNT).
The story moves quickly, and is continued elsewhere, so you won't get the end here, nor the beginning. But the dialogue is crisp, and the artwork is excellent (if a bit simple). It's an enjoyable read, in the end, which is really all that matters. It takes itself more seriously than the movie did, and is a bit more adult overall, especially with such scenes as April having post-traumatic nightmares about the Shredder.
christmas Shredded.......2002-12-22
this graphic novel collect the original black and white issues no 10-12 in glorious full colour.
The story revolves around x-mas celeberations at april o'neals place. Leo is out excercising, when he gets ambushed by the foot. They apparent discover where these guys are holed up and crash in. This marks the return of shredder, though no explanation is offered. Also, Casey Jones gets into the fight, again, with no clear idea being offered to the reader who he is, or how he knows the turtles. With april's place thrashed, there is a loss of spirit amongst aveyone, and teh rest of the book deals withhow they cope with it.
This is a pretty good book, with great art and action. The writing in the latter part of the book is better than usual. Recommended, probably along with the three preceeding books in the series.

The real Turtles.......2007-01-01
I grew up loving the old cartoon, but as I grew, I found myself not liking it anymore. Then someone told me to get my hands on the original books. I am so thankful to him that I did. This was a great read. Adult, with a little humor thrown in. A must for any turtle fan. And here's hoping the new movie reflects these stories.

Great counting book.......2004-05-04
In this book ten turtles are sitting on a log, but one by one, they each jump into the water when startled by other creatures of the forest, like bullfrogs, ducks, and deer. The story rhymes, and has a lot of alliteration. At the end of the book is a reference section with short informative descriptions of the animals mentioned in the text. This is great for parents who are faced with follow up questions after reading the book. The story, with its countdown plot, makes a great wind-down at bed time. It has about 60 words.
Turtle Splash! Countdown at the Pond.......2002-10-16
Turtle Splash! Countdown at the Pond is the story of a day in the life of ten Eastern Painted Turtles. The basic premise of the book is learning the numbers one thru ten. The book begins with "Ten timid turtles, lounging in a line. Startled by a bullfrog...Then there are nine." Various creatures continue to disturb the turtles. One by one their numbers dwindle. The story concludes with all ten turtles reunited for the night. The numbers one thru ten are then reviewed. Falwell includes 2 pages of ecological information at the end of the story. Information is included about all of the wildlife mentioned in the book.
The artwork in this book is striking. Each page contains a striking mixed media collage. The leaf prints and birch bark leave a realistic impression of life at the pond. The various animals depicted appear very lifelike. The Eastern Painted Turtles are especially well depicted. Several collages provide a clue to the next animal that the turtles will encounter. A rabbit is seen in the background on the page featuring the bullfrog. Part of the red squirrel's tale is seen on the page featuring the rabbit. A glimpse of the fawn's back is seen on the page featuring the red squirrel. The book also includes instructions on how to recreate Falwell's leaf prints.
Language booster.......2002-05-17
My grandson loves this book! He likes to count the turtles, find the animals, and make all the animal sounds. He's even noticing the lively verbs and adjectives and has used them when he talks!
The artwork is very attractive and textural. A wonderful book.
Count on this one!.......2001-10-21
This beautiful counting book is a great introduction to nature as well. The bright collage illustrations are rich with texture and detail, and the perky text is fun to read to kids while they find clues to the next animal hidden in the pictures. There are information pages in the back that provide more interesting facts about each animal ( helpful to parents,too--I didn't know that turtles wintered over in the mud at the bottom of the pond!) and even an arts and crafts page that shows an easy way for children to make leaf prints.

Puddle & Toot a Hoot.......2007-05-14
So many Toot and Puddle books, so little time!!! I have a small, continually growing collection of Toot and Puddle books both for my own enjoyment and the enjoyment of all the kiddos I know and Love. The stories of Toot and Puddle's friendship, love, and adventures go far in teaching us all how to BE in the world. I recommend y'all begin to build your own collections today --- you'll never go wrong with T and P!!!

We make weekly trips to the library and each night read 2-3 books to my 2-year old son. This is his favorite book. It's helping him learn his ABC's in a fun way. We've checked out the book enough times that I've decided it is time to buy it for our home collection.
Toot & Puddle : Puddle's ABC.......2000-08-29
This is a must have for all Toot and Puddle fans. A great ABC book for children learning thier alphabet as well as a all around good book. The books starts as a children's picture book and moves into a ABC book and then returns to a picture book style which gives a little variety to the book. It will keep children's interest and as usual the writing and art work is fabulous!

MAMA: a TRUE story, in which a BABY HIPPO loses his MAMA during a TSUNAMI, but finds a new home, and a new MAMA
ASIN: 068985787X |
Book Description
Owen the baby hippo and his mama were best friends. They loved to play hide-and-seek on the banks of the Sabaki River in Africa. That was all before the tsunami came and washed Owen's world away.
But after the rain stops, Owen befriends Mzee, a grayish brown tortoise. He plays with him, snuggles with him, and decides he just might turn out to be his best friend and a brand-new mama.
Inspired by the tsunami of 2004, acclaimed storyteller Marion Dane Bauer and celebrated illustrator John Butler depict this heartwarming true tale of healing, adoption, and rebirth -- with splendid illustrations and oodles of love.

Book.......2007-07-30
This is a beautiful book! The pictures are wonderful and the story is touching. I purchased it for a friend whose sons name is Owen. She loved the book also.
Elementary-level readers will love it........2007-04-14
Marion Dane Bauer's A MAMA FOR OWEN tells of a baby hippo and his mama who are best friends and who love to play hide-and-seek in Africa, before the tsunami washes Owen's world away. The tsunami of 2004 serves as the inspiration for a gentle story of new friendships and changes, with John Butler's lovely realistic paintings spicing the story. Elementary-level readers will love it.
Adorable story AND illustrations!.......2007-03-31
I read this story at the bookstore with my 7-year-old daughter and she loved it! It is a heart-warming story with beautiful illustrations of love and family. It sends a great message that loving families can come in different shapes and sizes, which my daughter got and appreciated right away. If the last reviewer will take a look at the back of the book, they will find that this book is "based" off a true story; a true story that is summarized for the reader as well in that location. I don't think the author needs to enter ALL the facts, because it's a STORY. Enjoy! :-)
Not the true story!.......2007-03-26
As a school librarian,I was very disappointed in this book after reading two other books: Owen & Mzee and Mama. Bauer should not be jumping on the bandwagon to put out a book on this subject without putting in the facts. Owen did not meet Mzee on his own. A crowd of people caught and transported the hippo to Haller Park, an animal sanctuary, where he met the turtle Mzee. (They don't even tell you how to pronounce Mzee (mm-ZAY) in this book. For such a great subject, the book is pretty dull. How it got a starred review, I'll never know.

Box Turtle at Long Pond.......2000-04-14
Box Turtle at Long Pond is a rarity among children's books - it contains accurate information! It is very refreshing to read a book to children that portrays wildlife in a natural setting rather than wearing clothes, driving cars, etc. Bravo to the authors for combining their artistic and creative talents to create such a treasure. If only other authors would follow in their example. (This book also contains beautiful illustrations!)

Customer Reviews:
An Excellent Story for all ages!.......2006-08-20
Baby Honu (a turtle) doesn't think that he can help Keiki Naia (a dolphin) who is stranded on the beach. He asks many animals to help but all say it is the way of the ocean and tell him to give up. Finally, he gets an idea from a creature even smaller than he is and he realizes that even though he is small he can still make a difference.
We bought this book on a trip to Hawaii and it immediately become one of my 2 year old daughter's all time favourite books. I love that it uses the Hawaiian names for the animals. My daughter uses her favourites, "Kohola", "Honu", and "Keiki Naia", in her usual speech. This book is great for all ages and the illustrations are stunning.
I love the message in this book: perseverance and small actions that bring about big results!
You will not be disappointed with this book!
A beautiful story w/gorgeous illustrations. .......2005-04-27
The Spirit of Aloha is perfectly embodied in this wonderful book.
Akahai: kindness expressed w/tenderness, Lokahi: unity expressed w/harmony, Olu-olu: agreeable expressed with pleasantness, Ha-aha-a: humilty expressed w/modesty, and Ahonui: patience expressed w/perseverance. (yeah, I had to look that up)
Baby Honu is a little dude, but nevertheless learns of his importance to the collective existence of all living creatures.
The use of Hawaiian words helps make the story an important cultural lesson (there is even a glossary in the back) and the illustrations are artfully detailed and colorful.
My son loves this sweet story as much as I enjoy reading it (and if you love reading out loud as much as I do, there are a lot of fun voices to "do").
We bought this book on a trip to Hawaii and I was so happy to see it on Amazon - it's my favorite gift to give for kids of all ages.
