Book Description
The Third Edition - 2005 is now available! This comprehensive resource book of 192 illustrated pages was written by Kathleen Myers, a nationally known potbellied pig breeder and consultant. Since 1989 Kathleen has cared for her own pet and breeder pigs and has spent thousands of hours sharing her vast experience and knowledge with other pet owners and breeders. She continues to counsel pig owners and breeders around the world via e-mail and telephone.
Kathleen offers her wealth of practical knowledge in this book as a complete, up-to-date guide for the care and training of the pet pig. She revises her books every two to three years to include the most current information about the training, health, nutrition and general care of the pet potbellied pig. This is a "How To Book" designed as a textbook to give the pet owner the skills necesary to raise a happy, healthy, well adjusted potbelly pet pig. Because of her background in education and training, the book is organized through easy to find topics. Each topic section of the book has complete instructions specificly related to the care and training of pet pigs. To accompany her instructions Kathleen has filled the book with wonderful pictures of pet pigs.

Pot Belly Pig book.......2007-09-29
Wonderful book. Helped quite a bit. Only problem is the binding fell apart and the pages were all loose. Most likely a problem with who ever is paid to glue the book together. I needed the book or I wouldve returned it.
All you need to know!!.......2005-10-11
This book has the answer to any question that you are ever likely to have regarding the well being of a Potbellied Pig.
A Must Read for all Pet Pig Owners.......2001-06-04
Kathleen really did it right with this book! It is a great source of everything you'll need to know about pet pigs and their mental and physical health. If you have a pet pig, you MUST have this book.
A Must-Have for Pig Owners.......2001-04-13
As the two-legged mom of 3 potbelly pigs, the oldest of which is now 10, I find this book a wonderful wealth of information that every care-giver of pet pigs should have on hand. Laid out in a very easy to use format, this book will take you from the history of where potbellied pigs came from; help you decide if a pet pig is right for your family (as they are not for just anyone); and then moves on into what to look for when choosing a pet pig; how be be prepared for it's homecoming and the proper living environment required for these special little pigs; the medical need-to-know information that is specific to pet pigs; along with various other chapters which will put you and your companion pig on the road to a happy, healthy and long relationship. Information on pet pigs and their care is sparse at best. This valuable text helps fill that void in the pet pig market and I promise you'll have many pages dog-earred or marked with post-its by the time you're done reading it. No pet pig home should be without The Complete Guide for the Care and Training of Pet Potbellied Pigs.
The Truth About Pigs....or Pigs Can Be Pets too!!.......2001-02-24
If you want to know the truth about the potbellied pigs stop right now and purchase your very own copy of the book "The Complete Guide for the Care and Training of Pot Potbellied Pigs" by Kathleen Myers. The title to the book unquestionably describes its content. You may think pigs are not for me; or, I know all there is to know. You cannot be any further from the truth. Before reading this book I knew very little about the potbellied pig. After reading this short but comprehensive book I feel confident in selecting and raising a potbelly as a pet. The author takes the novice as well as the expert step by step through the practice of owning the potbellied pig. Did you know you can actually house-break a potbellied pig?
For those needing additional assistance understanding their pet the book answers those questions, as well. Kathleen Myers even lists all plants which are toxic to potbellied pigs. She includes a comprehensive resource list with phone numbers and web sites all potbellied pig owners need at their fingertips. Topics on the list include animal care, best feed for your pet, training videos, and numerous other online resources.
Whether you are a novice or enjoy potbellied pigs in your daily life, "The Complete Guide for the Care and Training of Potbellied Pigs" should be by your side. There is no other guide as complete as this one. It will be a constant reference resource for the Potbellied Pig pet owner.

Customer Reviews:
A suprisingly disappointing novel .......2005-08-07
I found that this particular piece was overly depressing. The depth in description of a long, desolate, flat desert is far greater than the typical human brain can endure. Besides being virtually plotless this novel magnifies ethnic struggles in American society to an extreme which disgusts me because I, myself, am a minority. I am a person who does not like to see people in pain. There for, I do not recomend this book.
Not as good as its prequel.......1999-09-08
I am a huge Kingsolver fan and I absolutely loved the Bean Trees and Animal Dreams. However, I felt that this novel was a bit too preachy, especially because of the character of the young Cherokee lawyer. Being a minority myself, I believe she grossly exaggerated the predicament of minorities growing up in America. This entire novel had the feeling of denoument--it seemed to exist merely to tell fans what happened to the beloved main characters of The Bean Trees, nothing more.
Synopsis of "The Complete Fiction:...".......1999-08-31
I first read Kingsolver's "The Bean Trees" in high school and thought it was wonderful. I've just finished reading "Animal Dreams" and Kingsolver continues to impress me with her portrayal of strong women such as Codi Noline.
It was interesting but the storyline seemed unrealistic........1999-02-20
Book Review
Pigs in Heaven, by Barbara Kingsolver is a book that will keep its readers attention throughout the story. Each character in the book possesses very unique and unusual characteristics. This allows for an interesting story that keeps you reading. Kingsolver used her writing talents to create characters that have a great influence over its readers. When reading this book I felt that I could relate with the thoughts and actions of certain characters. Thus, this book improves the way its readers think of themselves and of the people around them. I also enjoyed reading Pigs in Heaven because it allows the reader to gain an understanding and appreciation of the Cherokee Nation in Heaven, Oklahoma. Kingsolver explicitly describes the history and culture of the Cherokee tribe in great detail. The reader is introduced to certain members of the tribe and traditional events such as hog fries and stomp dances. Thus, he/she has a sense of feeling "included' within the Cherokee tribe and their customs. Pigs in Heaven deals with the theme of interconnectedness and how one event can create a chain of different events. Each one of these events can significantly effect the lives of many individuals. However I feel that this theme is over exaggerated to the point where the story line actually seems unrealistic. Aside from this, the book is very interesting and I would strongly recommend that it be read. For as you read further into the book you'll notice that Kingsolver attempts to convey important messages while resolving the books conflicts. An example of this is that in order to live a life of happiness you must put the negative aspects of your past behind you. Overall, Pigs in Heaven consists of important lessons to be learned, and it contains valuable components that are forever placed in the minds of its readers.
An insightful book that will make you view life differently........1998-11-11
Barbara Kingsolver has become one of my all time favorite authors after I accidently happened upon High Tide in Tucson. Since that time, I have purchased and read everything she has published. This collection of books resides on the ledge of my bathtub to be enjoyed when I need to escape. Someday, I hope to have a book signed by Ms. Kingsolver. She has forever changed how I view the world.

Customer Reviews:
Outdated, But An OK Place to Start.......2006-12-09
There is some information in this book that is outdated, particularly the part dealing with Sugar Glider nutrition. We know a lot more about the nutritional needs of Sugar Gliders than we did when this book was published in 1997. For example, MacPherson suggests it is fine to feed cat food to Sugar Gliders. That idea has been debunked for some time.
It's an OK book to start with if you know absolutely nothing about Sugar Gliders. And it's only good because no new books with updated Sugar Glider information have been published recently. There is, however, a ton of solid, up-to-date information about Sugar Gliders available on the internet.
"EMI" Very good book!!!!!!!!!!!.......2006-02-22
Very good book and it has a lot of info that you need to know it has most the info I already knew but a very good book for someone who needs some Questions answered.

Everything You Need to know for a new owner!!.......2005-09-17
This book is everything that you ever needed to know about a sugar glider! I am thinking about buying a glider and after reading this book i still do. It will be difficult, especially since it is nocturnal, but i bet anyone who tries can.
This book says the nutritional needs and even a few mixes. It says EXCACTLY what you need if you're a new owner.
Very Informative.......2005-07-25
A very easy to follow book that indeed covers a large basis on what it means to care for sugar gliders. This book helps to combat some of the myths surrounding diet concerns and offers many wonderful pictures. Detailed and enjoyable to read.

Very good.......2007-02-20
I truly enjoyed this book and it has all the information one needs to take care of a rat!
The best care book for rat owners!.......2007-01-04
This is the best and most accurate rattie care guide I've read. Ms Ducommun is know as the Rat Lady and has been one of the best rat health experts for many many years.
I have 5 rats myself and even though I'm experienced in their care I found this book interesting to read. I think every rat enthusiast should have this on their book shelf :-)
A very informative book.......2007-01-01
We landed ourselves a pet rat a little over a year ago. Neither of us really knew much about rats, but we muddled through researching here and there on the internet and asking questions at the pet shop, etc. Our rat seemed healthy and happy, but I always worried that we might be missing something.
I received this book for Christmas, and by the end of Christmas morning I had read 2/3 of it! It is such an interesting and informative read. It put my mind at ease on several issues, taught me quite a bit and it is great to know that I have it as a reference if anything should ever happen to our precious Ratatouille! Like another reviewer already said, it might not go into quite enough detail for people who already know a lot about rats, but for your everyday rat owner, I think it is more than sufficient.
Oh, and, after reading in this book that you should never keep a solitary rat, unless you can spend several hours a day with it (we manage a couple of hours a day), we are off to get a house mate for her, in the new year. Of course, now we have this book, we know how to successfully introduce the new rat in the correct and proper way ;o)
Complete Care: Rats .......2005-08-10
I have a pet rat, and this book was helpful. I especially liked the chapters telling about games you can play with your rat and showing them. It was also very helpful on food, cages, and health. I would recommend it to people of all ages.
A Good Book for the Basics of Care.......2005-07-08
This book is a nice book if you are looking for the basics of rat care at a glance. This book gives an overview of what a rat is like. Plus, since the author is the famed "Rat Lady," you know that you are getting a great book with accurate information.
Of course, the book doesn't go very in-depth with everything. It lists off common illnesses, a few tricks, and the basics. If that is what you're looking for in a rat book, then this is the book for you!

Should definitely read before getting a dwarf bunny.......2004-12-25
The book's design and photos are very pleasing (& very cute!). The author offers much useful and easy to understand advice. If you're looking into getting a bunny or just became an owner of one, I highly recommend this book because it will make you & your bunny's lives easier. It gives you tips on how to bond with your bunny, what to do and what NOT to do with him/her. I made the mistake of not having read this book before raising my bunny. I did things that I thought were completely normal to do (I have 2 very small dogs & have had many animals before) but were totally inappropriate when it comes to rabbits. Just being caring and loving is not enough. You need to learn to care and love the right way to ensure a happy and enjoyable life for the both of you.
Dwarf Rabbits.......2002-06-11
I read the paperback edition, which I enjoyed immensely. The information is presented in a way that is easy to read and understand. The pictures are precious! The cutest rabbit in the world is on page 9, a purebred Thuringian dwarf. I wish I could find a rabbit like that one! If you read this book, you will definitely want a rabbit for a pet.
Unfortunately I was late!.......2000-01-26
I am sorry that I did not buy this book before I bought my rabbit. I wish I had read it before doing so many mistakes. I recommend you to read this book before buying this lovely creature, at least not to hurt it against your will.
This book helps you get started with your rabbit........1998-12-10
This book helps you get off to a great start with your new rabbit, great clor pictures and easy to read. I loved the pictures and the information was valueble to me I am now looking forward to buying my first rabbit this has helped me feel more confident about my decision.
A most informative read!.......1998-11-14
The color pictures are lovable and this book is simply brimming with information about how to take care of dwarf rabbits. Each section is informative and comprehensive. It certainly provided me with plenty of tips on rearing my dwarf rabbits.

Very Disappointing Pig Book.......2005-09-30
This book is so not what its title suggests. I was looking for some basic information on pot-bellies in general- what it's like to live with them, how to choose one, care for one etc., in order to determine whether or not a pig would fit into my life.
Unfortunately the book told me next to nothing about any of this. It reads like the author was just trying to fill up the pages with no regard for the usefulness of the information. There is a section on pig illnesses for example that is just ridiculously long, listing every possible pig infection, rash, hoof problem, disease, etc. but without telling the reader how to handle the problem, what the symptoms are, or whether a vet should be called or not. I also learned nothing about how to choose a pig, about different pig personalities or about general pig behavior.
The photos in the book are cute (because how can a pig not be cute?) but the clothing the people are wearing looks like it is from the 1970's, which further confirms my suspicion that the books itself it just a quick throwing together of old information from other pig books, rather than a well-thought out, well-written, up-to-date book on pot-bellies.
If you're looking for information on pot-bellies, there have to be better books out there. Don't waste your money on this one.
Pot Bellies and other Miniature Pigs.......2000-08-24
I have been looking for a good book about Pot Bellied Pigs for a long time, and I belive this book to be excellent. It is packed full of useful information and has the cutest pictures you will ever see. I recommend this book to any PBP owner if they are new to this wonderful pet or if they have had one for years. I don't believe that you will be disappointed.
Great Book for beginning pig parents........1999-07-10
Having just acquired our first piglet, we were looking for all types of information about these animals. We found this book answers just about all of the questions we have had to this point. In fact, this is probably all the 'pig book' we will need for a long time. We highly recommend this book to anyone just starting out. Lots of information in great detail for beginning pig owners.

Customer Reviews:
Very Bad Book.......2004-06-29
I would not reccommend this book to anyone! A lot of the information was wrong and completely inaccurate!
A good book to get about hedgehogs is The Hedgehog - An Owners Guide to a Happy Healthy Pet. Written by David Wrobel with Susan A. Brown, D.V.M.
This book is filled with lots of helpful info!
Uptodate and insightful!.......2002-08-16
I couldn't disagree with the previous reviewers anymore! This book is simply smashing, I mean how often does a chap come across a book about Hedgehogs, and then how often do you find a book with this much information. Really, a bang-up job! As for Cedar wood chips, I will have you know I have raised 5 consectutive hoggies on cedar beds, and they still chase my cat around the house like a whirling dervish. This book is smashing, and I would advise anyone interested in raising hoggies to read it.
Outdated and inaccurate.......2001-09-20
I don't know where to start. This book recommends activities that I consider to be catastrophically bad for hedgehogs, like keeping them on cedar shavings, which can cause respiratory failure. I just can't recommend.

Children love hamsters, but owners of all ages should know how to keep these animals correctly housed, properly fed, and provided with toys and devices to help keep them active and healthy.
Customer Reviews:
It's okay, not spectacular........2007-05-03
I bought this book to see how to better care for my new hamsters. Had a lot of pics and the usual you could expect but I found it overall to be dull and boring. It seems like it was meant for kids nearly but I could tell it wasn't. It seems a dumbed down or just a bland author. For example it said not to feed your hamster hemlock, well guess what I did after reading it? Yeah, it had no picture of a hemlock leaf and that was the leaf I picked out to let my hamster play with WHICH THE BOOK SUGGESTED I DO (leaves it said actually). Yeah, I coulda looked up a pick of hemlock but I thought it was some obscure tree. So my white hamster died eventually, oh well she was a vicious unthankful brat to me unlike my sweet brown one who at the moment is hiding or scurrying around inbetween the walls of my apartment (I could tell she was frustrated so I let her go back on purpose this time - don't worry she always comes back.)
I also didn't like that it had no references to a few of it's claims, like never to disturb it when it's grooming (why?) and one or two other things. My hamster doesn't seem to care when I do.
Another suggestions was impractical if you are poor, such as not handling it often, well for me it's either that or let it rot in either of its small homes mindlessly running on spinning wheels or sleeping all the time. I have to handle it often to burn off it's energy (hey are soooo hyper and will scurry under doors and rip up the corners of my apartment.)
Oh yeah, it seemed overly talkative about syrian hamsters, why?
One last thing, the pics were bleah, I was hoping to see a lot of cute hamsters instead there were like one or two the rest were ugly.
Great Book For Kids.......2007-04-08
This book has been a great guide for my 9y/o. He has read it cover to cover and even goes back to it when he has questions. Highly recommended.
Useful book with a lot of cute pictures!.......2005-04-29
This books is full of high-quality, cute pictures of hamsters. But also, the information within it is very good. I've been keeping pet hamsters for over ten years. I read this book shortly after I got my first hamster, and I keep on returning to it for its useful information. The books is very well written. Any new hamster owner will find it full of great information.
Ranks top 10 in pet guides........2004-07-14
The best guide to hamsters that we have found so far is this Complete Pet Owner's Manual. It also gave me the impression that the series had other successes besides this, after determining the quality of this one. The manual is most assuredly complete, covering: Maintainence, dietary supplements, dealing with the loss of a hamster, and specific behavioral signs. There are more sections in there that are also very interesting to know. These are very specialized and popular pets, and this covers the void for excited owners of their first hamster. If you already own other manuals about the hamster, this one is likely to be somewhat redundant.
Ranks much higher in binding quality also. The "Happy Healthy Pet" owner's guide series has very cheap cardboard binding, and will fall apart in a matter of months from heavy use. "The Essential Hamster" has pretty good paperback binding, but not as firm as this one. There is a single other hamster manual being sold in stores and online, but it's paperback quality is not very good. Buy this first for good information and binding quality for hamster purchasers.
Adequate, useful guide to buy with that pet hamster!.......2003-12-30
This is a good book that probably ought to be required when you buy a hamster for your youngster. You should buy this one for yourself, and TRAINING YOUR PET HAMSTER for the recipient of your gift! Then all of you can take good care of the hamster, learn more and more with each passing day, and have fun all the while without using a computer game 24/7!
Product Description

Customer Reviews:
GREAT BOOK!!!!!.......2007-01-04
This book has sooooo many details abouut dwarf hamsters. It tells of many tips and how-to's of taking care of your dwarf hamster pet. It also gives much information about understanding your hamster, what it needs, and about the history and origins of the 4 different types of dwarf hamsters. Another section includes the breeding of dwarf hamsters. It is very scientifical and educational and can really help you with your house pet.
Dwarf Hamsters (Complete Pet Owner's Manuals).......2007-01-04
Very informative book on dwarf hamsters. Wife and daughter both thought it was a very good book to start out with. What information it didn't have we found online. Overall they like it very much.
AWESOME .......2006-07-20
This book was an great resource for my dwarf hamster and helped me learn all I need to know about taking care of it. I totally recommend this book.
Hamsers Revealed!.......2005-04-26
I have always loved animals, and when I first bought my adorable Siberian Dwarf hamsters, it w as no exception. But sometimes people need a little help every once and a while.
There were many things I didn't know before reading this book. My mother and I looked up information on the internet, but the websites kept contradicting themselves and other sites, which only lead us in circle after circle. When the opportunity came at school to order any book that we wanted, I found this one and chose it.
Dwarf Hamsters: The complete pet owner's manual was one of the most informative reading materials on hamsters that I've ever read. It explained in great detail how to house, feed, play with, and raise hamsters. They gave great examples to go along with these explanations, as well as gorgeous pictures of the animals in question. I liked that part of the book, since many of the pictured hamsters looked much like mine. All sixteen of them!
This book also gave good histories on the hamster species. I liked the tables that listed their scientific names, origin, life span, and appearance. It explained where they came from also and how they act in the wild. That also helps, in case owners need to prepare for instinctive behavior.
I liked the pictures of the pups (infant hamsters) also. I enjoy when my female hamsters have babies, and it is so fun to watch them grow up and develop into the adults I own today. The pictures accurately captured what they look like and do at certain ages, and the text gave good tips on what to do when your hamster has pups. Any first-time raiser of pups should follow what is written in this book, even thought it may seem wrong to do otherwise.
One thing I did not like about this book is the fact that the authors didn't focus on the Siberian Dwarf Hamsters enough. Most of the information about the species was for the Chinese and Roborovskii hamsters. The book could have used more information on the Siberians, but much of the information could go for them as well as the Chinese or Roborovskii hamsters.
This book gave nice tips on how to communicate with your hamster when you first purchase it, and as it continues to reside with the owner. For example, they state ways to pick up your little pocket pet in a way that won't startle it. They say to hold it at least a few minutes every day, so that the hamster can get used to your smell and won't be as jittery around you. Another important communication subject this book talks about is how to differentiate a healthy hamster from an ill one. To me, that is one of the most important things to know when keeping these pets.
All around, this book is a wonderful source of information for first-time raisers and seasoned raisers alike. I would suggest this book to anyone interested in hamsters of all species!
Full of information.......2002-08-31
This has been a very helpful book, explaining a lot of our hamster's behavior and helping us to care for her better. The only reason it doesn't get five stars is that, once in a while, it leaves you hanging. For example, it explains the potential problems with various types of bedding material, but never comes right out and says which is best. Still, it's well worth getting, even if it's not perfect.

Customer Reviews:
The rabbit book.......2006-11-04
It has some good basic info... but lacks specific in depths about rabbits.
good first rabbit book.......2006-09-11
This was my first rabbit care book. It is typical of the ones you find in pet stores etc. It is relatively thin and has a lot of glossy rabbit pictures in it and good basic care information. Since getting it, I have found it to be a little vague in some areas of rabbit nutrition, mainly the need for timothy pellets, the mainstay of the rabbit diet, and the evils of calcium in a rabbit diet. Other than that, it is a good, inexpensive, colorful rabbit book that I did enjoy reading.
A good beginner book.......2005-07-13
I bought this book a couple days before getting my bunny. We have now had him for 3 days, and I am looking for a more detailed book now. It was good because it shows pictures of bunny types, is easy to read, and easy to reference.
The downside, it only has a little information on everything, it is a thin book. I want another one with tons of information, but this one is good for kids and referencing.
lacks training advice.......2005-05-27
It was an okay book, but none of the information was anything I hadn't already read on websites for free. The heading here also says it provides everything about training, but I didn't find any training advice other than getting it to stand up, stuff I don't consider training, my rabbit does those things naturally. It doesn't discuss chewing at all. I was very disappointed.
This Book Saved My Rabbit's Life.......2004-07-06
If you're thinking of adopting a rabbit, this is the perfect book to get for a new pet owner, seeing as how all of the information that it contains is broken down simply, in a language that is untechnical, and easily understood by rabbit owners and lovers of all ages. RABBITS: A COMPLETE PET OWNER'S MANUAL, is filled with tons of different information that rabbit owners need in order to care for their new bunny. From info about a rabbit's origins, life cycle, temperament, to info about selecting the perfect rabbit for your family, information about feeding, purchasing a cage, health care, accessories, and more.
As someone who loves rabbits, and has owned a Holland Lop named Cinnabun for 6-years, I know first-hand that this book is a must-have. In fact, just last week, this book saved Cinnabun's life. I noticed that Cinnabun was acting strangely, and looked up his symptoms in Monika Wegler's RABBITS. I soon found out that Cinnabun was suffering from Snuffles, a deadly upper respiratory infection. The vet informed me that had one more day passed, Cinnabun would have surely died. It has now been a week, and Cinnabun is not only feeling better, but is back to his old ways, and I have this book to thank. The easy-to-understand chapter about health care is amazing. A true must-have!
