Book Description
Deep, deep down in their underground town, the prairie dogs live in harmony--until a mysterious, fluorescent, very fuzzy thing (otherwise known as a tennis ball) rolls down their hole. When the prairie dogs discover that they can pluck and pull the fuzz into fabulous fashions, their fear quickly turns to curiosity, then delight, then pure greed.
The frenzy that erupts threatens to tear apart the prairie-dog town forever. But when mean ol' Big Bark is kidnapped after taking all the fuzz for himself, the prairie dogs come to the rescue and remember the true meaning of community.
Customer Reviews:
LOVE IT!.......2007-09-16
I first read this book at a teacher workshop and fell in love with the story and the varied page formats. (Some pages unfold vertically to show the underground tunnels!) This is not only a fun book to look at, the kids giggled all the way through it as the plot unfolded. This could be used in reader's workshop to teach point of view, predicting, inferring, sound effects, or it could also be used to spur a discussion on friendship and cooperation. We did an author study on this sister authir/illustrator pair and the students love how they have a sense of humor and are a bit silly in their stories. I LOVE IT TOO! :O)
My kids teacher suggested this one!.......2007-05-02
This was a fun book! A dog drops a tennis ball down a hole which turns out to be the entrance to a prairie dog community. It surprises and scares them. They gather around chattering about to do; that is until Big Bark appears. He is a rather large prairie dog who has a bottle cap for a hat. Before he can do anything little pip squeak jumps forward and picks off some fuzz and starts playing with it. Pretty soon the whole colony starts playing with the fuzz and things get crazy. Soon more and more prairie dogs show up wanting fuzz and it runs out. Then they start fighting over it!
We liked this book and it's been a bedtime book every night since we bought it. The artwork is good and I think the author gave a funny presentation to the personalities of Prairie dogs. I particularly liked Big Bart's run in with an Eagle. "No more Big Bark! The crowd cheered "Yaaaaay!" "Don't yaaaaaay! He's one of us!" yelled Pip.
Again a great story and I can see the book will be well loved by my girl.
Fun to read.......2007-03-14
This is such a cute and clever story. It's great to see how all of the prairie dogs come together at the end. We have had this for awhile and both of my girls (4 and 7) still consider it a favorite.
The Great Fuzz Frenzy.......2006-11-06
This book was a joy to read. The illustrations were priceless. I never knew that prairie dogs were so much like humans!
a wonderful gift for any age "kid".......2006-10-12
This is a perfectly wonderful concept with super illustrations just waiting for a touch from the reader. It is impossible to read this book without laughing. Underlying lessons are as easy to take as a spoonful of sugar making the medicine go down!
Book Description
In The Black-Tailed Prairie Dog, John L. Hoogland draws on sixteen years of research at Wind Cave National Park, South Dakota, in the United States to provide this account of prairie dog social behavior. Through comparisons with more than 300 other animal species, he offers new insights into basic theory in behavioral ecology and sociobiology.
Hoogland documents interactions within and among families of prairie dogs to examine the advantages and disadvantages of coloniality. By addressing such topics as male and female reproductive success, inbreeding, kin recognition, and infanticide, Hoogland offers a broad view of conflict and cooperation. Among his surprising findings is that prairie dog females sometimes suckle, and at other times kill, the offspring of close kin.
Enhanced by more than 100 photographs, this book illuminates the social organization of a burrowing mammal and raises fundamental questions about current theory. As the most detailed long-term study of any social rodent, The Black-Tailed Prairie Dog will interest not only mammalogists and other vertebrate biologists, but also students of behavioral and evolutionary ecology.
Customer Reviews:
Heavy stuff, but interesting.......2002-07-22
This is a book by a scientist, and he was writing for other scientists--But it can be read by anyone with an interest. The author watched a prairie dog town for several months a year for over a decade, marking each of the animals so he could track individuals. He describes details of how he made his observations, but most of the book describes the habits and social behavior of prairie dogs, just as the title says. The book has a LOT of detail, but is readable and interesting. Some is rather surprising, such as prairie dog mothers who attempt to murder their nieces and nephews, but who, if they don't succeed, will nurse these same infants a few weeks later.
Recommended, if you want to "know it all" about prairie dogs! For less intense studies and gorgeous photography, look for "Prairie Dogs, Sentinels of the Plains."
Book Description
For hundreds of years black-tailed prairie dogs inhabited the Great Plains by the millions, improving the grazing for bison and pronghorn antelope, digging escape holes and homes for burrowing owls and rodents, and serving as prey for badgers, coyotes, hawks, and bobcats. This book by the renowned naturalist and writer Paul A. Johnsgard tells the complex biological and environmental story of the western Great Plains under the prairie dog’s reign—and then under a brief but devastating century of human dominion.
An indispensable and highly readable introduction to the ecosystem of the shortgrass prairie, Prairie Dog Empire describes in clear and detailed terms the habitat and habits of black-tailed prairie dogs; their subsistence, seasonal behavior, and the makeup of their vast colonies; and the ways in which their “towns” transform the surrounding terrain—for better or worse. Johnsgard recounts how this terrain was in turn transformed over the past century by the destruction of prairie dogs and their grassland habitats, together with the removal of the bison and their replacement with domestic livestock. A disturbing look at profound ecological alterations in the environment, this book also offers a rare and invaluable close-up view of the rich history and threatened future of the creature once considered the “keystone” species of the western plains.
Included are maps, drawings, and listings of more than two hundred natural grassland preserves where many of the region’s native plants and animals may still be seen and studied.

Book Description
These playful rodents are often considered pests by cattle ranchers, but when acquired as pets, they are both fun to keep and affectionate, but strong-willed and mischievous. Titles in the extensive Complete Pet Owner's Manuals series provide pet owners with basic information on keeping healthy, contented, well-cared-for animals. The series includes approximately 175 titles and covers pets of every kind: dogs, cats, and birds of many breeds, as well as fish, reptiles, rabbits, hamsters, and just about any other animal that people keep as a pet. Facts and advice cover all aspects of pet care, which include proper feeding, housing, health care, grooming, training, and much more. The text in each manual is supplemented with many vivid, full-color photos, and with instructive, anatomically accurate line art. Each manual has been individually written by a breeder, trainer, veterinarian, or experienced animal specialist.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful reference for Prairie Dogs and Richardson's Ground Squirrels.......2006-11-04
This is a wonderful, detailed book for raising and caring for Prairie Dogs!
I'm using it as a reference guide for one of their cousins, the Richardson's Ground Squirrel! They have many of the same traits as the PD but they are about half of their size!
Good starter book for new prairie dog owners.......2003-04-23
This book was easy to read, has cute pictures, and gives you basic information on what things to consider and do before you buy a prairie dog, plus how to care for them after you have purchased. It is very important that new owners have this information since most pet stores selling prairie dogs are not educated in the proper care of these wonderful but demanding pets. It is not the best or the most detailed book I have read on the subject but you don't have to spend hours searching on the internet to find it and it is priced reasonably. For a new owner or anyone trying to decide if a prairie dog is the right pet for them I would highly recommend you purchase this book. For more expereinced owners who have other reference material you won't find anything new in this one and there are a few errors but you get to see more pictures of cute prairie dogs!
Good News for Prairie Dogs.......2002-07-22
Even if you have never seen a live prairie dog before, this book is an excellent primer on these industrious, energetic creatures. Prairie dogs are increasing in popularity as pets. This owner's manual systematically outlines the essentials about housing, feeding, handling and keeping prairie dogs healthy.
The section on behavior and training includes useful descriptions about their vocal repertoires and how to interpret their meanings. I especially like the many tables and sub-sections such as "do and don't" tips because they provide practical information that you can put to use (and can easily find).
Dr. Vanderlip describes how to keep a prairie dog healthy, and what to look for if they have health problems. As with other books in this series, the illustrations (numerous and excellent quality) and layout make the subject easy to understand and to use as a handy reference. Prairie dogs will benefit from the education that this provides their caretakers!

Book Description
When people meet, they shake hands, hug, smile, and say, "How are you? What's new?" But what about lions and bears and fish? How do they greet one another? In this intriguing picture book Marilyn Singer explores, explains, and describes the extraordinary ways in which animals communicate. When zebras meet, for example, they pull back their lips and chew the air to show that they won't bite each other. Young readers will also be introduced to some of the basic elements of animal behavior, such as why lions are the only wild cats that live in groups. Detailed illustrations by Normand Chartier complete this informative look at the fascinating world of the animal kingdom.

Prairie Dogs Kiss.......2000-05-23
I first picked up this book for the title. I thought it was so cute! The pictures and content are great for teaching children about how animals greet each other. Everyone knows that dogs sniff each other, but how many know that Prairie dogs kiss each other, and bite each other if they don't like the other prairie dog! Or that lobsters really do wave at each other. Mrs. Singer gives examples of many different animals and how they greet each other. I think most children from age 8 and up will enjoy this book.

Book Description
In 1803, President Thomas Jefferson sends Lewis and Clark out west to explore. He tells them to make maps. He tells them to draw pictures and collect plants. Most importantly, he tells them to send presents! What kind of present is good enough for a president? Beginning readers will truly enjoy reading about this fun and little-known slice of American history.
Customer Reviews:
Even younger kids can understand the Lewis & Clark Expedition.......2006-04-09
Excellent book for introducing younger children to the Lewis & Clark expedition. Entertaining text and great comical illustrations!
History Can Be Fun........2004-09-02
LEWIS AND CLARK: A PRAIRIE DOG FOR THE PRESIDENT is a step 3 young readers book that discusses how the Lewis and Clark expedition began, what it's purpose was, and some of the strange sights that the group of explorers saw. The story has some words that the youngest of readers might not be able to handle, but contains enough familiar words and phrases that somewhat older readers (1-3rd graders) won't have any problems and might pick up a few new vocabulary words. The illustration by John Manders is really what makes this book stand out as it adds a depth of humor to the text that would otherwise be lacking. For instance, the picture of the overburden scout carrying a cage with a prairie dog and another with some magpies, traveling to Baltimore to deliver the plants, animals, and other goods and a letter to the President is quite funny. Overall, this is a really good book that children will enjoy reading and learn some history in the process.
A Fun and Funny Reader.......2003-05-28
Lewis and Clark, A Prairie Dog for the President, is a fun read that's nicely paced. Author Shirley Raye Redmond uses whimsy and humor to tell this historic event: President Jefferson sends the eager Lewis and Clark off to explore the West. The vast young nation has never been fully explored. The president wonders how long it will take to get to the end of it and what they will find. One of my favorite parts is the banter over what to name the barking prairie creature they discover and send back to Jefferson.
"You can call it a ground rat."
"No, it looks like squirrel. I'll call it a barking squirrel."
"Squirrels don't bark. Dogs bark. We should call it a prairie dog."
"That's it!" Lewis and Clark agreed.
Later it starts all over again, when the President asks, "Is it a gopher?"
The illustrations by John Manders are just as pleasing. I like the facial expressions on the people and animals, especially the mischievous smile of the prairie dog. Manders is skilled at portraying action and emotions. And like the author, his sense of humor is so much fun. A buffalo and bear pose to be sketched. A buffalo won't fit in a shipping crate. Prairie dogs pop in and out of holes, eluding capture. A poor scout is so weighed down with "presents" for the President, he must be hoisted onto a boat.
Together, Shirley Raye Redmond and John Manders have created a delightful book.

The Black-Tailed Prairie Dog: Social Life of a Burrowing Mammal (Wildlife Behavior and Ecology series)
ASIN: 1559634987 |
Book Description
The prairie dog is a colonial, keystone species of the grassland ecosystem of western North America. Myriad animals regularly visit colony-sites to feed on the grass there, to use the burrows for shelter or nesting, or to prey on the prairie dogs. Unfortunately, prairie dogs are disappearing, and the current number is only about 2% of the number encountered by Lewis and Clark in the early 1800s.
Part I of Conservation of the Black-Tailed Prairie Dog summarizes ecology and social behavior for pivotal issues such as when prairie dogs breed, how far they disperse, how they affect other organisms, and how much they compete with livestock. Part II documents how loss of habitat, poisoning, plague, and recreational shooting have caused the precipitous decline of prairie dog populations over the last 200 years. Part III proposes practical solutions that can ensure the longterm survival of the prairie dog and its grassland ecosystem, and also are fair to private landowners. We cannot expect farmers and ranchers to bear all the costs of conservation while the rest of us enjoy all the benefits.
With 700 references, 37 tables, 75 figures and photographs, and a glossary, Conservation of the Black-Tailed Prairie Dog is a unique and vital contribution for wildlife managers, politicians, environmentalists, and curious naturalists.
John L. Hoogland is a Professor of Biology at the University of Maryland's Appalachian Laboratory, and has studied prairie dogs for the last 33 years.

Francisco is a lonely boy. Amigo is a prairie dog. They both live in the desert, and both want someone to play with. Francisco thinks that he's "taming" Amigo, his pet -- but Amigo knows better.
Customer Reviews:
A favorite book for every child........2006-02-09
This is a very imaginative and beautiful tale. I really thank the author for writing this adorable and tender story in poem. It explores the beauty of nature and to emphasize the prettiest things in life like having a friend. I would love to have a dog too, like Francisco does. But I cannot have one because I live in an apartment and I do not have patio so he would run around. I felt identified with Francisco and his urgency to have a pet. This was also very funny reading about the little prairie dog's thoughts towards Francisco, because he sees Francisco as a pet. For "Amigo" it is very funny to hear how humans talk. I think this book would be a favorite book for a child.
One of the best books ever.......1999-11-13
My 7-year-old son has loved this book since it was first read to him at age 3. It is beautifully written -- a real pleasure to read aloud! -- and its message is wonderful: one can live with, respect and love Nature's creatures without having to own them! Garth Williams' illustrations are terrific, too, of course. Like the other reviewer, reading this book can cause me to cry, especially as I near its lovely ending. Get this book and take the time to read it to an attentive child. And check out Baylor's other titles; she's got the right idea.
Not a dry eye in the house!!!.......1998-09-14
I read this book to both of my children and remember barely being able to keep from crying. It is truly a wonderful, heart warming story of a poor Mexican boy whose only pet was a praire dog. It is written in simple and poetic verse. If this book doesn't make your children think about the beautifully simple pleasures of life then nothing will.
