Book Description
After nine months on the road, Maxie McNabb is ready for some R&R, Alaska-style, with her miniature dachshund, Stretch. But no sooner has the sixty-something RVer parked the Mini-Winnie than a pleading phone call sends her flying to Hawaii. Because Karen Bailey, hobbled by an accident, needs Maxie's help packing up her house.
But within hours of Maxie's arrival, a prowler tries to break in and someone sabotages the plumbing. And when she hears Karen whispering into the phone-don't call here...I'll call you when it's safe, when she's...-Maxie suspects that Karen is hiding something. Far from home and no longer behind the wheel, Maxie feels as though the ice is melting around her.

Another great "Maxie" novel.......2007-07-24
Following in the series of the "Stretch and Maxie" series, this novel did not let me down, even though Stretch (Maxie's beloved dog) was not present. Being a lover of Alaskan lore, I have read and enjoyed all Sue Henry's novels. "The Refuge" deters from this as it deals with HI, another favorite state of mine. Though Henry's novel is fiction, she uses real places/cities which made it so real and interesting for me. Sue Henry writes an interesting mystery that keeps you reading til the end. "The Refuge" has a wondering surprise ending!
I love Maxie and Stretch.......2007-05-21
I love to read Sue Henry and I like her new series Maxie and Stretch. It's a great NEW story, not just a new name and a new local for the same old story. I like Maxie so well, I find myself wanting to jump in a minniewinnie and go - just like she does.
Pleasant, easy reading.......2007-05-21
but I was a little disappointed in this newest addition to the Maxie and Stretch mysteries. Since Maxie goes to Hawaii to help an old acquaintance, Karen, with her move back to Alaska, Stretch is not in most of the book. He's home in Alaska.
Karen is less than helpful once Maxie arrives letting her assume the complete responsibility of getting all her household goods sorted to either sell or take. Then there's the yard sale and organizing everything for the movers. Maxie is not a happy camper. She hires a young man, Jerry, to help her with pulling everything together while Karen heads home to Alaska leaving them to finish the job.
When the movers have left and the house is closed up, Maxie rents a truck camper to take advantage of the opportunity to see some of Hawaii before returning home. Jerry tags along as her tour guide with the bad guys in close pursuit seeking something Maxie doesn't know she has. There are a couple kidnappings and a ransacking of the camper but, overall, they seem to be a somewhat inept group of villains.
The Refuge is an entertaining read. I didn't enjoy it as much as The Tooth of Time but it is still a nice addition to the Maxie and Stretch series.
Missed Stretch.......2007-05-08
I love this series and really enjoyed the book, but I missed Stretch. I am a great fan of dachshunds & would like to see him throughout the book. Otherwise, could not put the book down-very exciting all the way thru.
What's Not to Like?.......2007-05-03
Sue Henry, better known for her fabulous Alaskan/sled racing mysteries featuring Iditarod champion Jesse Arnold, has created another classic character (or should I say characters?) in Maxie McNabb and her wonderful dachshund Stretch.
In this third book in the series, Maxie is sans Stretch, but he's never out of her mind, or ours. Having just returned from her last New Mexico adventure to her beloved home in Homer, Alaska, Maxie reluctantly turns right back out the door to help a friend, Karen, in Hawaii.
Karen, who is really more an acquaintance than a friend, is one of those helpless females whom 64-year-old Maxie abhors. But a plea for help is something Maxie can't ignore, so she flies into Hilo, rents herself a camper truck (we know her from her Winebago) and goes to help Karen, who has a broken arm and leg from a fall, sort out her household goods to be returned to Alaska.
Short on plot and long on fabulous descriptions of Hawaii, this bit of fluff moves along quickly until it reaches its surprising conclusion. If you are looking for a good mystery, this isn't the book. If you love quirky, larger-than-life characters and descriptions that place you right into the story, grab this book.
Can't wait for the next one!

Dachshunds for Dummies.......2007-07-20
Not very helpful. Could be talking about any dog. Recipes in the back of the book are dangerous for dogs. Some of the ingredients are toxic to dogs and could make them sick or kill them. Not happy about that. This book should know helpful and healthy lifestyles for animals. This is the second dog for dummies book I've bought. Won't buy any more.
Dachshunds for Dummies.......2007-04-02
Bought for a friend with a new Dachyl - she loves both!
Dachsies..good reference book.......2007-02-10
Even though have had several dachshunds over the years I still found the book interesting and informative. But then, what's not to love about these bossy little 4 legged fun loning animals?
A real eye opener.......2007-01-05
Dachshunds are very loving and wonderful dogs, but they are also some of the most stubborn creatures that you will ever meet. This book really helped us to understand how to train and relate to our new puppy. We were ahead of the game when it came to potty training and discipline because of this book. I highly recomend this Dachshunds for Dummies for all dachshund owners (both present and potential).
dachshunds for dummies.......2006-02-01
Good book and informative. A must buy for anyone who is thinking of adopting/purchasing a dog of this particular breed.
Book Description
One spring morning in 1957, veteran photojournalist David Douglas Duncan paid a visit to his friend and frequent photographic subject Pablo Picasso, at the artists villa near Cannes. Traveling with Duncan was his pet dachshund, Lump. The photographers nomadic lifestyle and his other doga giant Afghan houndhad never suited the jealous and temperamental Lump. So when they arrived at Picassos Villa La Californie that spring day, Lump decided that he had found his paradise on earth, and that he would take up permanent residence with Picasso. Lump was soon immortalized in a Picasso portrait painted on a plate, but this was just the beginning. In a suite of 45 paintings reinterpreting Velsquezs masterpiece Las Meninas, Picasso replaced the impressive hound in the foreground with jaunty renderings of Lump. Fifteen of the paintings are reproduced here, bringing full circle the odyssey of a fortunate dachshund who found his way from reluctant road warrior to furry and elongated icon of modern art.
Customer Reviews:
The Ultimate Wiener Dog Art.......2007-09-02
This book is an unmitigated delight. The photographs are enchanting and the story they tell completely wonderful. I was sad to learn that Picasso "dumped" Lump when his back was injured, but he gave him to David Douglas Duncan (who originally brought him) and I must think that Lump lived out his days in great happiness. In any event, this is a real charmer and a great one to keep on the coffee table to look through again and again.
Great book.......2007-08-14
Art is one of my passions, and until getting this book Picasso was just an inivative man to me with a weird style I didn't appreciate. This book changed my mind, especially after reading this part of the book,"Picasso's welcome of Lump into his family happened so fast Jacqueline was stunned--speechless. There had always been dogs around Picasso's studios and seen in some of his paintings but never in his arms--where Lump was now at home." It was really a touching book.
You must own this if you are a dachshund lover. And you really must own it if you are an art lover.
Picasso and Lump.......2007-07-13
An enjoyable photographic essay featuring one of my favorite artists and my favorite type of dog, a dachshund.
An Artist and His Four Legged Soulmate.......2007-05-15
This wonderful book was a big hit with me for two reasons. I've had dachshunds all of my life, with two in residence now, and I majored in art history in college. The minute the book arrived I read it cover to cover. Lump's antics tickled me to death and I laughed out loud causing my own dachshunds to stare and look at me in the way that only dachsies can do. I've even begun calling my most mischievious one "Lumpita" ! After reading the book I went back and examined every detail in each picture, fascinated with the very intimate look into the private life of the artist. The story of Picasso and Lump exposes a vulnerable side of an artistic genius. You don't have to love dachshunds to love this book!
Not what I expected.......2007-05-13
I didn't realize when I ordered this book that it was primarily a photographic essay. The pictures are delightful but, as a dachshund "owner," I had hoped for more of a written history of the adventures of Lump. 'Owner' in quotes since anyone who has lived with a dachsie knows who owns whom.
Book Description
Readers raved about the fabulous first novel from author Blaize Clement. Now everyones new favorite sleuth, Dixie Hemingway, is back with her second riveting case. As Dixie and an adorable dachshund named Mame are out for a morning walk, a car speeds by and Dixie waves to the driver. Later, after the dachshund discovers a dead body, Dixie realizes that she has waved to a killer. And since the killer mistakenly believes Dixie can identify him (or her), the chase is on...
Customer Reviews:
Duplicity dogged the Dachshund......too many broken animal legs.......2007-09-16
I think this new author is good.
However, most people who read mysteries with animals do not want to read about kittens whose legs have been purposely broken. I stopped there. Then I went back. Next thing I knew, I was reading about a MONKEY whose legs had been purposely broken.
What is this thing the author has about having animals tortured like this?
I can't read her, which is too bad, because, aside from these animal torture scenes, I think she is good.
I could deal with the death of the dying Dachshund (sort of), but most writers who feature animals realize they are writing for animal lovers.
We are not looking for horror, or even the sadness.
I am so sorry this author can't do without the cruelty to animals in her mysteries. I sat down thinking I was going to have an entertaining read, and ended up depressed.
Could you try again, and leave out the animal torture?
We know animals are mistreated, and most of us contribute to funds to make sure they are not. We don't want to read about it in what I supposed was sort of a "cozy" mystery.
I definitely DO NOT recommend this to any animal lover with a heart.
Excellent series.......2007-06-14
Another very nice job by Ms. Clement. Interesting story with a main character that is changing and growing as she works though her personal tragedy. The information on pet behaviors and care are a nice addition. Most of all the mystery is pausible and the characters are interesting. I vacation in Siesta Key and the author's local details and observations are right on the mark. Readers note: I am a very tough reviewer so consider my four stars a high recommendation.
Could have been an excellent book but..........2007-06-06
I wish I could have given this book a higher rating. 99% of it is highly enjoyable with excellent writing, well-drawn and interesting characters, and a beautifully depicted setting. But, unfortunately, this otherwise terrific writer chose to throw in some really nasty bits of animal cruelty that ended up staying with me longer than the positive qualities of the book. I usually enjoy passing books along to my mother and sisters, but I really couldn't do that in this case as I know that they would find certain elements of the book far too disturbing.
Good Series.......2007-06-03
I enjoyed both books in this series. I like the incidental information given about animal behavior, the Siesta Key setting, and the fact that Dixie is an interesting character. I like that she has depth and although she has men in her life she cares about and who care about her, she doesn't need to be rescued by them. (Must be something to do with her 3 showers a day and her endless supply of "clean white Keds" HA!) I'm looking forward to #3.
Not just for dog lovers.......2007-05-20
I enjoyed Blaize Clement's writing style and her characterization of the main character. What makes this book infinitely enjoyable are the details around the Sarasota area. Having just visited, I felt part of the story due to the details.
I'm not a dog lover, but related to the story all the same. I look forward to reading more about Dixie.

Enough With the Notes Already :0.......2007-06-30
Finding what I call a "sophisticated cozy," is often a challenge. This is my first in this series, and it didn't dumb-down the mystery too much. Good characters and an interesting plot. I am concerned, based on one of the other reviews, that the series may become formulaic, but I will order more. Besides most authors of mystery series have a formula. No matter who you read, after a while, you get tired and need to switch up. My only criticism had to do with the notes. My goodness, she spends HOURS transcribing her notes. That is a little unbelievable. The interviews aren't that long. Fill that time with something else, Desiree. Maybe it's a ploy to close loose ends: Eureka! The answer was in my NOTES. Whatever. This isn't rocket science. We who like uncomplicated mysteries are going to have to take a little imperfection. This book was fun. I recommend it and will visit with Desiree again.
This series is fun.......2007-06-09
There is nothing profound about this series, and the mysteries are not highly mysterious, but it is a great deal of fun. Time spent in Desiree's company is always enjoyable.
delightfully wacky.......2007-06-08
I tremendously enjoy Eichler's wacky, chubby, citified detective, Desiree Shapiro and the off-beat characters with which Eichler's books are populated. Isnt' it fun how "gossip" helps Desiree solve things? This series remains in a category of mysteries that continue to engage my tastes -- which are tired and sick to death of the hardbitten, violent, and oversexed gumshoes that still inhabit too many of our mystery novels. This current one lives up to those criteria and I enjoyed the story, about which I will not comment any more so as not to impinge on your enjoyment of it.
So-So.......2007-03-20
This series has become very predictable. Desiree gets a case, talks to lots of people, spends hours upon hours typing up her notes, reviews her notes 500 times, and then on the 501st review, sees something that leads her to the solution.
Add in a few nagging phone calls from the whiny Ellen (and one Mandarin Joy dinner at her apartment), a few evil eyes from the annoying Jackie for not being privy to Desiree's every move, and a few dates with the nerdy Nick, who spends most of his time fretting about his over-the-top monster kid, and it's getting hard to tell one installment apart from the next.

Oscar is short, like all dachshunds, and all the other dogs make fun of him. On Halloween he takes more ridicule than ever in his hot-dog costume, but one brave act makes him a Grade-A hero.

Hallo-Wiener.......2007-09-26
This book is a wonderful holiday book! Not only is there great art work, but the story is hilarious! If you go to Dav Pilkey's site, you can download coloring sheets, too. Anyone age 1 to 99 will "howl" with laughter while reading this book, and it has a great lesson about acceptance at the end!
great.......2007-09-18
Great book, very funny. I don't mind reading it to my three-year old over and over and over. Cute illustrations.
A great read-aloud Halloween book.......2006-11-02
This is a darling book. The little dog dreams of being something terrifying for Halloween, but to his horror, his well-meaning mother makes him a hot dog costume, complete with mustard. The other dogs make fun of poor Oscar (the book is full of wiener jokes) until Oscar and his ridiculous costume save the day. I put this book on my top ten list for the kindergarten crowd.
Silly book kids will like to read around Halloween........2006-09-19
Poor Oscar Myer wiener dog (a hotdog dog) gets teased all the time. The bully dogs are always laughing at him because of his size and shape. For Halloween, Oscar's mom buys him a costume that is a hotdog roll with mustard on it. Oscar is so embarrassed, but wears it to avoid hurting his mothers feelings. Oscar gets laughed at once again but the story twists to allow Oscar a chance to be a hero. Oscar wins the respect of the bullies and they all share their Halloween dog treats with him. Silly story with decent, basic illustrations.
The Hallo-wiener.......2006-09-09
An adorable book that my preschool children want to hear again and again. This is a standard book in my preschool during the month of October. It is so funny with a lesson to boot!

Who'd've thunk J.K. Rowling's work would be parodied by a clever, wire-haired dachshund pup? Fortunately, that's no indignity, seeing as we're talking about none other than Howie Monroe, the budding canine author of other Tales from the House of Bunnicula.
Bunnicula fans already know (and likely love) Howie, and it's a treat to watch him sink his teeth into the first Harry Potter book. (Although, admittedly, Howie doesn't see it that way: "This is a serious work of fiction!!!! I can't believe my editor would call it a
parody!") Just as in It Came from Beneath the Bed!, this installment alternates between entries in Howie's writing journal (complete with authorial advice from his Uncle Harold) and chapters in the story that Howie's writing about a lovable, plucky, wire-haired dachshund named Howie. Howie (the plucky character) leaves home to attend the Dogwiz Academy for Canine Conjurers, and that's just the beginning of his uncanny resemblance to that other young wizard. In his quest to enter the Doghouse of Doom and face "The-Evil-Force-Whose-Name-C'not-Be-Spoke (a.k.a. Herbert)," Howie must release the Seven-Headed Schnauzer, crawl through the Tunnel of Terrible Things, and face all sorts of other perils. ("Would he ever again return to Centreville? Would he ever again sleep under Pete's bed? Would he ever again get to use the words 'ever again' in a sentence?")
As Howie (the aspiring author) sagely observes at one point, "This writing business involves way too much thinking." But kids will appreciate the effort and the tale--and might even learn a thing or two themselves about creating and structuring stories. Which, presumably, is exactly what Uncle Harold hopes for his nephew:
"Well, Howie, the big question a writer has to ask himself is--"
"When do I get paid?"
"That wasn't what I was going to say."
(Ages 9 to 12) --Paul Hughes
Book Description
Dear possible reader of this book,
My editor asked me to write a third book in my series, Tales from the House of Bunnicula. And did I have trouble getting started! I was afraid I used up all my ideas. But faster than a writer can say "What if?" I came up with a story! It's about a lovable and smart (not to mention cute) orphan wirehaired dachshund puppy named Howie, who has a mysterious pain in his leg and is mysteriously invited to attend the Dogwiz Academy for Canine Conjurers. Together, Howie and his best friend, the very, very, very smart Delilah, who speaks in a British accent in this book for some reason, discover they must fight a sinister foe...The-Evil-Force-Whose-Nam-C'not-Be-Spoke!!!
Your friend,
Howie

Tales From The House Of Bunnicula.......2003-01-09
I read Tales From The House Of Bunnicula
I thought it was a good book because it gets exciting at the end. I think a lot of other kids would read it. Kids and adults would like it. I think ages 8-30 mostly would like it. I recommend reading this book as soon as possible.
Book Description
What breed is sillier than the dachshund? None. With their low, elongated bodies, souldful eyes, and truly ridiculous proportions, dachshunds always look like they're telling a joke. Their owners get the joke, so they do things like organize everything from the annual Dachshund Parade in New York's Washington Square Park to the Weenie Run in Memphis, where hundreds of Dachshunds show up to rejoice in their dachshundood. Day of the Dachshund is for this crowd. In a gift-friendly little hardcover format-a bit more horizontal than unusal, for obvious reasons, Jim Dratfield combines 60 great photographs with delightfully clever quips to celebrate the endless charm of this unlikely breed.
