4 out of 5 stars Do you want to read something fun?.......2007-09-03

Knight does a wonderful job of writing something that you can just enjoy. I have gotten stumped(read that as bored) with too many books lately and this book didn't do that.

The setting is a post apocalyptic Earth which the author does a moderately good job of describing. Much of the history is left untold, but it's alright because this is not one of Stirling's books that spends as much time focused on world development as anything else. Let me just say that man is not at the top of the food chain and is truly in a pitched struggle for survival.

Now, the fun part is that things get going after about 75-100 pages of building to a more interesting segment. There are lots and lots of holes in the fabric of the story, don't let this deter you because the story really gets going and the action offsets the missing information.

Now, this is the first book in the series and the publisher should have asked from much better explanation of things. The author seems more focused no just giving you a fun story and less on building a fully depicted world.

I really, really like the book and the gradual transition of the main character from teen-ager to adult. This is a short book, so just pound through it and enjoy the ride!!!

5 out of 5 stars I don't read Science Fiction, but I enjoyed this book........2007-04-05

I bought Way of the Wolf because I loved E.E.Knight's Age of Fire series so much. I dove in with a lot of trepidation, fully expecting to find it as boring and dry as I'd found other Sci-fi books. Instead, I discovered vampires magic and even shapeshifting gods! I am hooked. This is no ordinary Sci-fi!

If you dig science fiction, horror, or western adventure, you'll dig this book.

4 out of 5 stars Bleak but Endearing...Can't Wait to Read the Next in the Series.......2006-11-06

The main character in this book is David Valentine, an orphan taken in by the local priest and we are shown his general development from childhood, through his training, and into young adulthood, with the parts about his training and young adulthood being more detailed than his childhood. In the Way of the Wolf, Valentine is chosen by a "good" Kurian, a Lifeweaver, to become a Wolf, an elite warrior with the finely honed senses and strength of a wolf. The purpose of the Wolves is to help destroy the minions of the Kurians (Reapers) and protect the safety of the Free Territory.

What we get in the Way of the Wolf (the first book in the Vampire Earth Series) is a post-apocalyptic world complete with characters that ring true (even if they are a little flat and one dimensional)...here you see the best and worst of human nature close up and while the world this new world is a violent and unpredictable, we still find flashes of happiness, humor and love as humanity survives and adapts to life in the Kurian Order. Additionally because Knight places the story not too far into the future, we still have characters that remember life before the Kurian order, so the author cleverly gives himself access to literature, television and other popular culture references that might not otherwise be available and I think this helps keep the story from being too bleak and depressing and keeping it accessible/familiar to the reader.

The way of the Wolf was in the Science Fiction section...but I think it has broader appeal than that and could be considered a mix of horror, sci-fi, mysticism, and dystopian society. I wasn't sure what to expect going into this...and while I'm a true horror fan and was a bit disappointed that this isn't more about the "vampires" I wasn't disappointed in the overall feel of the book. It's dark, depressing (sometimes oppressively so) and just plain disgusting in places...but it also has an authentic feel to it that is very appealing despite the bleakness of it all. The story is told in a kind of slice-of-life fashion that at give the book a bit of a disjoined feel...but which serves, I think to give a real rounded look at life under the Kurian order from the "free territory" to those living with the reality of day to day life living directly under the influence of the Kurians and their minions. Since this is a "debut" novel, I can only assume Knight's style and storyline will only get better, so I am definitely looking forward to reading the next book in this series, as I'm quite anxious to see what becomes of Valentine! I give it a B+, it's a good, entertaining read...but it's not without problems.

1 out of 5 stars Waste of Paper.......2006-08-30

When I originally heard of this series I thought that it would be one that I'd liked, however after reading the first one, The Way Of The Wolf, I'm greatly disappointed.

Knight creates an interesting and somewhat unique idea for a world, and borrows from Lovecraft somewhat, which is a good start. However he spends way too much time giving you background info over and over again. There's no character development at all. In fact the main character Valentine has no real personality and is very one dimensional. Overall there is no real plot to this story, it is a series of episodes spliced together and when you think he's going to start taking it beyond the training sessions or background info but it always ends too soon.

A story that goes no where.

5 out of 5 stars Innovative approach to an old legend.......2006-07-14

Knight has taken a surprisingly different approach to tie the science fiction/space opera story line to another fiction favorite, the vampire legends. In this book earth has been invaded by an alien race. Turns out this is the second time around and the invaders, who feed on life force, are the forgotten source of the vampire legends. The real innovation is that the story line is not at all in the horror genre, rather it is a military fiction/space opera story of the human resistance to this invasion. It is refreshing to see an author come up with a very well thought out and new story line for a science fiction fantasy line. I eagerly look forward to his future books on the Vampire Earth.

5 out of 5 stars Way of the Wolf by Martin Bell.......2007-01-21

This is the second time I have made multiple purchases of this book. Martin Bell has unique ways to express the Gospel, through poems, stories, music and more. I delight in sharing his insights with others who are searching for spiritual support in order to face today's focus on self. My two favorite stories are "Barrington Bunny" and the first appearance of the great silver wolf, and the description of God's "Rag-Tag Army." Prepare to laugh and cry, and to sit for extended periods meditating on what you have just read.

5 out of 5 stars "A Must Have" - Get it for your priest, pastor, or rabbi.......2006-04-06

My wife and I first met Barrington Bunny et al, thirty years ago
and were touched beyond words by the story. We bought a "vynal" recording, which eventually went the way of all flesh with the assistance of a puppy. After many years of searching we "found" it (CD version) and added it to our collection. My only regret is that the "sound effects" that were on our original recording were not on the CD version. In today's hectic, get it done yesterday world, it is an awesome gift particularly for your grandchildren.

5 out of 5 stars Barrington, we hardly knew thee!.......2005-09-23

The Way of the Wolf has stories after my own heart. I agree with the others, I cry everytime I read the opening story "Barrington Bunny." The story about how the bunny who had nobody finds who his family and his gifts were just hits home in so many ways.

And the boy who lost his magic is such a great parable about the Incarnation of Christ, it is profound. And who couldn't be moved by Joggi the porcupine, who learned how to love from a blind raccoon. The tales, with the mysterious silver wolf, are timeless!

5 out of 5 stars BARRINGTON BUNNY.......2001-08-14

I got this book at a Presbyterian church in the Seventies, probably through the youth group. After twenty-five years I still cry every single time I read 'Barrington Bunny'. Sometimes my tears won't even wait until the end of the story. As Barrington is turned away from others' Christmas festivities and family gatherings, I promise myself to remember that there's people out there at Christmas who have no one. "The only bunny in the forest..."

5 out of 5 stars "A gift, a free gift with no strings attached".......2000-07-31

-I'm never gonna forget that quote! Anyway, this is such a nice book, we read the Barrington Bunny story every Christmas and I love it. It's really moving and insiteful. And it is not just for children. Believe me, adults love this book too. I suggest it to anyone who has a heart, this is truly a great book.

Most of those who truly appreciate the intricacies of sports and business--and the increasing fusion of the two--are at least somewhat familiar with the way football's Green Bay Packers have built a model sports business during the 1990s. Far fewer, though, are aware of just how much the team's ongoing success has resulted from moves made by its current executive vice president and general manager, Ron Wolf. In The Packer Way: The Nine Stepping Stones to Building a Winning Organization, Wolf and sports journalist Paul Attner tell how this storied NFL franchise recovered from a prolonged downturn with the adaptation of core principles that can also be applied by entrepreneurs and CEOs in startups and major companies. Each of the principles is illustrated with examples drawn from Wolf's Packer experiences and further clarified in chapter-ending point-by-point recaps. Non-fans may not always see relevance in the football references, but those who follow the game will appreciate and enjoy stories such as those about the process of hiring quarterback Brett Favre and coach Mike Holmgren. --Howard Rothman

Book Description

The Packer Way is an instructive book on the business of getting your team to the top--an essential guide for leaders and managers of any organization by the man who rebuilt the Green Bay Packers into Super Bowl champions. Ron Wolf achieved his goal of creating pro football's best team by using the nine core stepping stones he outlines here. Also included in this edition is a new chapter on Mike Holmgren's resignation and the hiring of Ray Rhodes as head coach. Whether you're managing a small start-up company or are the CEO of a major corporation, Ron Wolf's leadership principles will be invaluable to your organization's success.

1 out of 5 stars Be Real.......2005-12-03

These Packers won only one Super Bowl and Wolf considers himself to be a management guru. The year this book came out, The Packers lost a wild card game on the road!!! The next year, Wolf's last, they did'nt even make the playoffs!!! At the end of this book, you'll find out something very interesting about Wolf. He has a severely broken hand-FROM CONSTANTLY PATTING HIMSELF ON THE BACK......

3 out of 5 stars Me, me, me.......2005-02-24

Wolf's primary method is the assertion of will. Yes, he does use technique, but his primary focus and purpose remain me-me-me: I'm doing this. I did this. I kicked some derriers. I inspired, so aren't I good! Yes, I grant he was probably a strong leader, but that should not be confusesd with being a good leader. The focus of a good leader is not the assertion of his/her will, but the good of the organization. Put concisely, the leader should be about us-us-us, and credit for success belongs with us. Wolf seems to apply a self-centered will more than good technique. A good manager is something of an artist: A good artist is economical in his brush strokes. So too, a good manager applies force in small amounts, and deftly. Wolf apparently used more personal force and less technique than we should admire.

3 out of 5 stars Enjoyable as a Packer Fan, not as an Aspiring Manager.......2001-07-08

I read The Packer Way in about a week, just a little each night before bed. It is a very quick read and frankly is a little light on the management insight.

Now being the Packer Fan that I am, it was quite enjoyable to get a 'behind the scenes' view to decisions made within the football organization, and to hear Ron Wolf's rationale for his decision making.

Some of his insights are very unique and he has no doubt culled his leadership skills from many years of experience. I was very impressed by his frankness regarding his mistakes and past failures. It is not by luck that he got to where he was and took a football organization with him. However, for all intents and purposes this really is more of a high level management philosophy that may or may not transfer to other domains or leadership personalities.

5 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended!.......2001-04-13

Sport is an overused metaphor for business, but Ron Wolf, Executive Vice President and General Manager of the U.S. National Football League's Green Bay Packers, surpasses the majority of management experts with his common-sense organizational wisdom. Recounting his turnaround of a languishing football franchise into a Super Bowl winner, Wolf (along with co-author Paul Attner) shows how he used the very principals he illustrates with his compelling sports analogies. While your organization may not compete on a stage as public as the NFL, you can use the same strategies. If these tactics can help the small-market Packers compete with teams from Chicago, New York and Los Angeles, they can certainly help your firm compete as well. We [...] especially recommend Wolf's "stepping stone" strategy of incremental improvement, which seems to us the equivalent of building a solid running game while your opponents lob Hail Marys.

4 out of 5 stars A book about management, not Packer history.......2001-03-14

I've read a number of complaints in previous reviews that Ron Wolf's exposition of his management philosophy in this book "gets in the way" of the history of the Packers of the past decade. Well, here's a clue: this is a book about management which uses the Packers as an example; it is not a history of the Packers. If you read this book, keep that in mind.

That said, the fact that the making of the championship Packer team of 1996 is the example used to explain Wolf's management philosophy does make it more interesting that your run-of-the-mill mangement book.

I've also read some comments from people who don't like the book because they don't like Wolf's style of leadership. Well, different strokes for different folks. Wolf is a tough, hard-nosed, no-nonsense leader, and that may bother some people, particularly those who don't want to pay the price to succeed.

Wolf's legacy as GM of the Packers (he recently announced his retirement from the NFL) is one of success where there had been none for decades. Yet this success did not come easily. This may not appeal to readers who think that fame and fortune can be had without hard work. Such people will not like Wolf's management style and would not like to work for him. If, however, you have the desire to win and achieve, you will appreciate Wolf's description of the manner in which he ran his organization.

Since most Blackfoot history is oral, it is difficult to find the stories in print. Mrs. Hungry Wolf has gone to pains to pass on the story of her female predecessors that never needs to be lost.

I first picked up this book back in 1999. Everytime I pick it up I find something new! If you want to know how the Plains tribes really lived Mrs. Hungry Wolf's book will tell you. When she speaks of 'grandmothers' she isn't just speaking of her biological grandmothers--she speaks of the women of their generation and earlier. Step back into another time and read how it really was. You'll throw away your Hollywood concepts and romanticized notions.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Laugh, Lead, and Succeed.......2005-10-04

Those words pop off the back cover to entice prospective readers to open the book. Combine that phrase with the subtitle about contrarian ways to improve leadership effectiveness and you begin to gain an idea of what this book is like. Frankly, I wasn't sure if I'd get a laugh a page or serious stuff. Turns out I got both!

Rinke, an experienced executive leader, management consultant, professional speaker, and author presents alternatives to the old saws that populate so many leadership books. Listen to some of the chapter headings: Knowledge is Not Power. Don't Manage People. Don't Be Proud. Don't Have People Work for You. Don't Focus on the Bottom Line. Don't Satisfy Customers. Are you getting the idea that you might be in for an interesting ride?

Each chapter lightly pokes fun at the common belief, though not as obviously as I expected it would. Readers will be surprised at the strong treatment of leadership skills, illustrated with stories that bring them to life. The lessons are presented in a way that holds interest and teaches practicality.

Laugh? This book includes something unique; I have not seen this done before. In each chapter, just before the summary, there is a brief section titled "Smile." Rinke shares a bit of humor with the reader to keep the book light and to demonstrate that leadership should be fun, not laborious.

If you've spent any time in leadership positions, you'll identify with the proverbial advice...and can probably create your own thinking about what Rinke teaches us. You'll spin a paragraph or two before you wonder where to go next. Rinke will be there to take you further down the path to success.

5 out of 5 stars A great contrarian combination.......2004-11-30

Dr. Rinke has used a fun approach to outline the necessary skills to improve leadership skills. By taking the backdoor approach he shows you exactly what to do. The book is full of wisdom, examples, techniques and humor. It should be required reading for any manager or leader.

5 out of 5 stars Another winning book.......2004-07-10

Wolf has contributed much to the fields of management and leadership over many years; this book adds tremendously to that body of knowledge.

"Don't Oil" is a common sense book that is an easy read, but is chock full of info spread over 20 engaging chapters that can be easily consumed.

A must buy for your library.

5 out of 5 stars This Book Really Helped Me.......2004-07-05

As a manager of about 30 people, I found this book extremely helpful. Some of the things I new before, but didn't really know how to apply them. This is not just a bunch of theory - it's real world.

5 out of 5 stars An easy read chocked full of great reminders and useful tips.......2004-07-01

This is a great book to jog your thinking and uncake your brain so you don't keep doing what you have been doing.

Rinke's sage advice will cause you to think a bit differently and try a few new tricks that will give you an edge in leading and managing your organization.

I particularly liked chapter 10, Don't Have People Work for You and chapter 13, Trust All the People All the Time. These chapters provide great insights and ideas for leading and managing a diverse workforce with plenty of Generation X and Millenium Group associates.

This is the kind of book that does not require great study or a huge reading investment, but provides great reading enjoyment and a big payoff in sound advice.

I'm an English girl who needed a book to read while on holiday in Florida. As soon as I picked up this book I was hooked. It was exciting all the way through, and all the characters, were gritty and realistic. I also enjoyed the dark humour of some of the one-liners. Imagine how disappointed I was when I got back home and found that Axler books aren't published over here!! I was very pleased when I found the Amazon website, and I have since ordered four more Deathlands books. Well done Mr Axler, keep up the good work!!!

4 out of 5 stars A different Deathlands.......1998-08-04

This volume is a little different from preceding books. With two scenarios, it almost seems a little rushed. However, the story is as good as others and the action is fast. Just a little off the pace of the usual Deathlands volumes, therefore only four stars.

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME.......1998-07-21

Way of the Wolf is yet another outstanding Deathlands novel. Ryan and his friends once again face their trials and tribulations with that Axler flair for the dramatic that ensures a damn good read.

4 out of 5 stars good paced action; good survivalism.......1998-07-04

a slight variation on the usual flow of the plot. The group has two main encounters this time around and an interesting challange. Quite enjoyable!

Kabbalah remains shrouded in mystery even to those familiar with the ideas of its teachings. An ancient Jewish tradition that espouses theosophy, Kabbalah seeks to use mysticism to explain the relationship between the universe and man, by means of 10 steps known as sefirot. Those who are well-versed in Kabbalah are considered holy men, respected tremendously in their communities and turned to in times of question or need. Yet, Kabbalah need not remain delegated to a select few; as Rabbi Laibl Wolf invites in his book Practical Kabbalah: A Guide to Jewish Wisdom for Everyday Life: "Embark on a spiritual adventure with a down-to-earth destination" using the powers, or "spiritual flows," of sefirot. Using this mystical tradition, Rabbi Wolk aims to make the fundamental principles relevant to everyday life, to help people use it as a means of self-understanding and furthering personal growth.

The first section, "Spirit Move," explores the tradition of Kabbalah, tracing its roots to the Bible and comparing many of its traditions to Eastern religions, suggesting they originated in the same beliefs. The second section, "Flows of Mind and Emotion," devotes a chapter to each of the sefirot--three of which relate to the mind, the other seven to emotion--to show how you can use these tenets to improve your life. For instance, Tif'eret relates to a wise heart, and its chapter concentrates on ideas such as "inner balance for wellness," truth and beauty, and compassion using the teachings of Maimonides and the Bible, a Hasidic tale, an exercise, a meditation, and even some thoughts on Deepak Chopra.

If you are searching for a book that will explain the doctrine of Kabbalah, this is not the book for you. However, for a spiritual person looking for a way to integrate some of the more popular self-help techniques into religious practice, Practical Kabbalah is an excellent guide. --Jenny Brown

Book Description

Kabbalah is an ancient Jewish wisdom that explains the laws of spiritual energy. Up until very recently the Kabbalah was reserved for the elite, those who only after years of scholarship and practice were allowed to enter this mystical realm. However, one doesn't need to devote one's life to intense study to reap the rich rewards of the Kabbalah. With just a basic understanding of a few key concepts, our lives can be enriched immensely. We can then begin to fulfill our deepest dreams and reach our most important goals, becoming the people we long to become.

By learning to understand the Sefirot--the ten spiritual properties that flow from the cosmic source into our heart--we can connect to the universe and profoundly transform our experience of daily life. For example, Hessed, or "loving-kindness," represents the desire to be generous, while Gevurah is the desire to focus intently or withhold. These properties must be balanced in order for harmony and well-being to occur. Rabbi Laibl Wolf shows how to maintain that balance and enjoy a healthy and productive life by using simple meditation and creative visualization techniques to grasp the spiritual nature of our life.

Practical Kabbalah draws upon ancient wisdom but offers a modern interpretation and easy-to-understand techniques for delving deeper into our selves and our world and for reaping the bounteous gifts that were always meant for us.

5 out of 5 stars Great foundational work.......2004-12-19

Rabbi Wolf begins with an overview and his credentials...he is a disciple of Rebbe Schneerson and a lifelong student of Judaism and Kabbalah. This is important to know when you see how many phony 'experts' there are on Kabbalah. He also writes about the history of Jewish mysticism and points out where there is controversy.

Then he dealves into the structure of the Kabbalistic 'universe' the ten Sefirot flowing through four worlds. He offers meditations and exercises to enhance one's understanding of the concepts. He describes them in psychological terms, but reassures the reader that these concepts are infinitely large and infinitely small.

Halfway through the book I was inspired to purchase several more books on the subject. That is the best recommendation I can give

4 out of 5 stars Honest and sincere..........2004-10-26

The voice that Rabbi Wolf uses in this book and his writing style make it accessible and enjoyable to read. A wonderful introduction to the kabbalistic "Tree of Life" or Sfirot. Each chapter is dedicated to a sfirah or point on the tree and they are described in great detail. Beyond that, the author takes the theory out of the abstract metaphysical realm and uses illustrations that apply to everyday life and we see how the metaphysical interacts with the physical. There are some wonderful, practical meditations in this book that I still use often and share with others as often as I can. Great read!

Shortly after finishing the book, I had the opportunity to hear Rabbi Wolf speak during a USA tour. He is as well-spoken, knowledgable, caring, and passionate in person. I agree with other reviewers who say that he is "a teacher of our times."

4 out of 5 stars "Mystical Messianism".......2002-10-06

This book provides an excellant summary of the author's very influential school of mysticism, which is the largest school of Jewish meditation in the world today. Rabbi Wolf, is the most most prominent teacher of Jewish meditation in Australia, and is now one of the better known in Israel and the US as well. He discusses the entire system of Lubavitch meditation, the name of his sect and many teachings of his late master, the Lubavicher Rebbe, Menachem Schneerson, who died in 1994.

He provides a good solid introduction to the 4 worlds, the 10 emanations from them and how to use each for meditative visualization. He provides a wonderful discussion of the psyhological dynamics of meditation, and each of the 10 emenations or sephirot in Hebrew. However, he does little to discuss how meditation is part of prayer in Judaism, or the relation of both to actual, as well as spiritual healing.

Further, there is little discussion in the work of the positive transformiing effects of Jewish ritual and custom on a person's karma or providence as it is known in Jewish tradition. For a discussion of these and related subjects, such as collective karma and divine providence and how they have worked out across time in the life of the Jewish people, please see "Jewish History and Divine Providence: Theodicy and the Oddyssey" by this writer, available here on Amazon.

3 out of 5 stars Why did I read this book?.......2002-07-13

After reading the praise given the author by others I'm almost intimidated to report that this book was just too very much. I found it tiring, no exhausting is a better description and ultimately confusing. I felt in order to benefit from the information given I had to immerse myself in it to a depth I do not wish to go. Perhaps I just wasn't ready for it but then again...

5 out of 5 stars a great teacher.......2001-12-05

Laibl Wolf is in my opinion among the great spiritual teachers of our time-- on a par with Thich Nhat Hanh. He is articulate and clear, uplifting and generous, and without simplifying, makes complicated and esoteric material accessible. I only wish that Amazon also would carry his wonderful books on tape and videos!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent as mysteries go - great characters.......2007-04-15

Luke McClendon, 35 and at his peak, is a quarter-breed cowboy and illigitimate son of Baxter McClendon and he runs the Montrose ranch for his step-mother, Kizzie and step-brothers, Tyler and Grant.
Tyler, about 30, we meet as the sheriff of Luma County. Neither brothers have any interest in running the Montrose.

Deanna Atchley is the girl next door. As a spoiled, indulged teenager she wanted Luke and did whatever it took to meet up with him. It was her testimony that put Luke in prison for the murder of her father. He didn't believe she couldn't remember.

All Luke wanted now was revenge on her for betraying him. It has been fifteen years since her father's murder and ten years since Luke got out of prison. All Luke could envision was Deanna living the good life somewhere. He was certain she had gotten rid of his baby.

Deanna has started having nightmares and flashbacks and now must face the past in order to get on with her life. She is also determined to clear Luke's name. Yet was the price he asked for his help too high. Could she tolerate his treatment of her?

Deanna wondered what her mother, Phyllis and her brother, Junior and his wife, Benita would say to her regaining her memory.
She was sure that one of them knew who killed her father. The man who horsewhipped Luke and threatened to kill him. He would not tolerate her having a child by Luke.

Plenty of charged emotions as hatred threatened to destroy Luke - and Deanna needing forgiveness - betrayal and mistrust - murder and vengence - wonderful characters - brutal disregard of emotions.
    It has it all.

Definitely Recommended --M Maybe a keeper? you decide.

    5 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC.......1998-11-07

I thought this book was the best of Beverly Barton. I could not put this book down, I had to finish reading that day. Deanna was so in love with Luke, but her family stopped at nothing to keep them apart. His trial and release from prison for the murder of Deanna's father was unreal. Deanna came back into Luke's life to clear his name, but the only thing on his mind for her was revenge. I loved this book, the passion and sex, was great. But the plot and the ending of this book was unreal. I could not believe it. Keep writing those books BEVERLY!!!

    5 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC.......1998-11-03

This book was so good. I love every book that I've read by Beverly Barton, but this book had to be the best. They loved each other, but her family got in their way and would not let go. This book is full of passion and sex. The plot was so good that I could not put the book down until I finished it. I read it in a day. What can I say? Just read her books, you will thoroughly enjoy them.

    5 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC.......1998-10-30

I have read this last book of Beverly Barton's. I love this book. The passion, sex, plot and the ending was great. I recommend this book to anyone who would like to read it. It is worth you time to read this book. I have read every book I believe Beverly has written. She is a great writer with so much feeling in her books.
