This is a great book, and a MUST HAVE for anyone who loves the animal friends they live with. Clear, concise, well-organized,and well written, this book leads you step-by-step through the process of protecting your pets. Following their suggestions, I've made sure that my cats will be loved and cared for, no matter what happens to me. Can't recommend it highly enough.
A must for every pet owner.......2002-10-09
We have two cats out of the twenty one rescued from Erma Jenine's cattery ,Venus and Sassafras as mentioned in the tragic tail in the book. Thanks to Karen Lawerance I was made aware of its printing. It is a must read for those of us who must consider the well beign of our devoted pets after we are gone.
A book for all pet lovers!.......2002-09-05
A great resource book of how to protect our pets. Thank you David and Charlotte for the information and insight into this area . We will definitly set up a pet trust for our two cats, that are the light of our lives. We will rest easier knowing we have taken care of those that love us, (with paws!)
A "must-read" book for all true pet lovers.......2002-08-11
Collaboratively written by David Congalton and Charlotte Alexander, When Your Pet Outlives You: Protecting Animal Companions After You Die is a solidly written and "user friendly" resource for pet owners wanting to ensure that their animal companions are taken care of in the event of the death of the pet owner -- especially since pets are legally classified as property under American law and as such cannot lawfully inherit money directly. Setting up a pet trusts and veterinary care contracts, and the wide variety of options to ensure one's pets are taken good care of, and more are all discussed in depth in a "must-read" book for all true pet lovers.
I'm glad I found this book!.......2002-08-09
I discovered "When Your Pet Outlives You" thanks to a friend of mine who knew I was worried about my beloved cats. My wife and I have four beautiful four-legged children and we are constantly worried about what would happen to them should something happen to us. Not anymore! I took this book to our attorney and asked him to set up a pet trust just like Congalton and Alexander suggested. Thank you Charlotte and David!

Very nice devotional style book........2006-03-04
WHEN YOUR PET DIES was written primarly for children but is a comfort to adults too. The book can be read very quickly and is bascially in the style of a devotional type book full of nice comforting thoughts. I bought one for myself and have one on reserve for friends and family when the need arises.
Uplifting and Hopeful.......2002-04-15
I have read several books and articles on experiencing grief from the loss of a beloved animal. No book has brought as much hope and a feeling of calmness to me as Ms. Pomerance's "When Your Pet Dies". Written primarily for children, it is as helpful and reassuring to adults as it will be to children. Parents should feel comfortable in allowing their children to read this book. Parents should read it as well. It traces a very realistic picture, both figuratively, as well factually, of the process that humans go through during the life of their beloved pet. The pictures in the book, done by a 13 year old girl, are both colorful and beautiful. They add a great deal to this journey through life into death. I have reread it many times, enjoying it more each time. I highly recommend this book to anyone going through the grief related to pet loss.

five stars.......2002-04-15
A great book, with good insight about people who have experienced a loss of a pet. Compassionate and understanding.
Grieving for pets is OK.......2002-04-08
"When Your Pet Dies" may have been written for children, but this beautifully written book should help people of all ages who have lost a beloved animal companion.
Accompanied by lovely illustrations(obviously the work of a youngster!) that help to clarify the text, it contains important information about the grieving process and makes it clear that grief is OK and normal. It should help children to identify their feelings and begin the process of recovery.
As a special education teacher and educator, I highly recommend this eloquently written book for children(and their parents)who have had the devastating experience of losing a beloved pet.
Help for one of a life's hardest times.......2002-04-03
Not only does this beautifully written book help children who have suffered a major loss, it can also help adults. In much of today's society losing a pet is not considered a major loss. But to many people, it's a catastropic event with no one to share it with who understands. It's apparent the author does not only understand but has learned the way through this extremely difficult time.
This is a wonderful tool to help get through your grief of a beloved companion's death, no matter what your age.

Incredibly Sensitive and Compassionate Work.......2006-12-19
I purchased this book along with several others after a complex (non-emergency) euthanasia decision I knew long in advance was a lose-lose situation. I knew euthanizing my precious elderly animal because of intense personal duress would almost be tantamount to suicide, and I waited until circumstances had broken me before proceeding with it. (So far, my dire prediction has proved true; the aftermath *is* as bad as anticipated.)
Mr. Quackenbush's book was the first to arrive. My grief is so deep I didn't think anything written by a stranger would do more than divert me. I had no expectation at all a book might help me by hitting nerves and letting the pain flow, a situation infinitely preferable than the numbness and despair I lapsed into. But the book accomplished this in two ways: 1) The author wisely, humbly, and frequently makes disclaimers about "complex" or "unusual" reasons certain people are forced to choose euthanasia. Quackenbush is or was affiliated with the Veterinary Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, and, while his book is a succession of anecdotes, he shows exquisite sensitivity in selecting particular stories of pet loss. Many if not most of these stories note how stressors IN ADDITION TO the looming prospect of euthanasia play a part in the horrible time for the pet owner. Finally, he assures the reader that euthanasia will most likely be the ugliest decision any human being will have to make--which in itself is tremendous and tender comfort.
2) He makes the reader feel, throughout, as if he is on *your* side. In other words, his book is about as apolitical and compassionate as a book on such a subject can be. Although I do not recall if he uses these exact words, he let's you know that *you're* an animal too, deserving of the same kind of compassion and unconditional love he is certain you showed your beloved companion animal.
This is a magnificent book. I am less than two weeks into the ugliest time of my life, a time that puts me in mind of Emily Dickinson's great poem, "After Great Pain." To paraphrase Dickinson, if I "outlive" this pain in addition to "remembering" it, I will owe more than a little thanks to this author for making me feel as if I was part of a sad, sad society, instead of the loneliest soul on the face of the earth...who CHOSE to separate from the one little being who meant more to me than life presently means.
got me through tough times.......2006-06-06
I can't say enough about how this book helped me. I remembered reading about it years ago in a magazine. I searched and finally found one in a new age bookstore! I have loaned this book out so many times.
I have found that the reader has to be ready to read......so give it all the time you need. Once you are through you will be so glad the book was written.
Thank you Jamie Quackenbush for helping me through a very sad time. K
Very good book.......2004-08-21
I've read three pet loss books for adults (two when my dog was dying, and one a few months after her death), and I think this is the best one of the three. The author pretty much hit it on the spot about all my feelings associated with the loss of my dog. The book made me feel that I'm not alone in the loss of my doggie "soul mate", that it's okay to feel this bad for a while when an animal companion dies. Yet he doesn't make generalizations, like some books do. He said certain things work for most people, BUT there are exceptions. Although at the end I feel that I'm just like most people, but at least the book gave me "permission" to think of other options.
real grief is ok.......2000-07-15
I'm surprised no one else has reviewed this wonderful book. I happened to run across it at my local library. Two weeks after euthanising my Cat of seventeen years,I practically fell apart in the bookstore browsing the pet section .I knew i had to look at my feelings of grief. This book was such a compassionate friend to me during that time.He quoted alot of others' experiences with their losses and the pain they felt. This helped me so much to truly feel my loss, especially since I had put him to sleep.the guilt over that can really wreak havocwith you. There is a section specifically about that ,too. His chapters cover all the ways you can lose a pet, which was welcoming. What I loved most about it was his understanding that your grief is as real as losing a person, just as deep and your love, just as strong. As soon as I opened the book,I didn't feel foolish any more, and let the tears flow. And consequently,I was able to move through my grief much quicker. It's a warm, compassionate book, and I was looking for it for a friend who just lost a pet too.I highly recommend it.

A neat little book.......2005-08-06
This is a neat little book, very special. I think it would be very helpful for those facing the loss of a pet. As a veterinarian, dealing with owner grief is an important part of my practice. I'm happy to recommend this to all of my special clients who may experience the trauma associated with pet loss. Well done!

Outstanding!.......2004-05-22
As an animal lover myself, as a certified hospice bereavement counselor, and as another author who's written about pet loss and specialized in pet loss counseling since 1992, I loved this book. Like all the rest of Alan's books, this one is clearly stated, clinically accurate and beautifully written -- and it comes from the heart of the author's own personal experience with pet loss. Because Alan Wolfelt is so very well known and respected in the field of death education and counseling, I believe his book about pet loss will do more than help bereaved animal lovers. I think it will lift the experience of pet loss into the mainstream of professional grief literature where it rightfully belongs, and that alone is a cause for celebration. For many years I have felt that uninformed and insensitive mental health professionals can do more damage to disenfranchised bereaved animal lovers than any member of the lay public can do, because they should know better -- and it is up to those of us who know the agony of pet loss to teach them. I want to thank Alan for writing this book, and I wish him every success in its sales and distribution. For my part, I've already listed it under the BOOKS ABOUT PET LOSS category on the Articles and Books page of my own Grief Healing Web site (http://www.griefhealing.com), I've recommended it to both pet loss support organizations with whom I consult, and I will continue to recommend it to my clients and participants in my pet loss support groups as well.

Perfect little book.......2007-07-08
I purchased this for myself because I have a problem talking with God. With this book as I read it out loud I said each one of my little fur angles in the blank spaces where you would put the pets name. This helped me to talk with God about my babies leaving to go to the Rainbow Bridge in Heaven, or going through their hurts and sickness. I love this book

added to my guilt.......2006-04-23
Left me feeling more depressed. I stayed with my dog during euthanasia, but was very very sad and crying. Author indicated crying made it harder for my dog. Belle was my best friend, and I needed to be with her, as well as her needing me. But to indicate weakness, because of strong emotion is not sensitive. Also includes stories of cruel pet owners who considered, or did have dogs killed because of behavior, minor illness etc... I was looking to cope with my pain not feel additional sadness. If you are not opposed to a religious book, read "Cold Noses At The Pearly Gates" very comforting.

Wonderful and helpful book.......2006-07-14
This book really helped me when my dog died. It covers subjects such as how we relate to pets, ways people grieve, pets that die suddenly or after a long illness, choosing euthanasia, helping children when a pet dies, and many other topics. My dog died after a long illness and that section was very good for me. It is a very well written, easy to read book.
