5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-09-29

This is a great arena book with work plans to help the rider plan lessons etc. easy to understand and well displayed for while you are riding in you arena. hang it up and you can refer to it with ease. Great way of planning you lessons and helpful ideas to extend your riding.

5 out of 5 stars Great horse exercise book .......2007-01-11

this is a great book for learning all the little things you need to know or for working on all those things you should know
what a great book awesome diagrams and simple explanations any one can use this book would be a great tool for instructors

5 out of 5 stars Great book for the Intermediate rider working at home........2006-07-13

This book is great for riders who can easily walk trot and lope/canter and depart on a correct lead.

This is somewhat of a "crossover" book--dressage and western with exercises that are great for horse and rider, but which my not be popular with di-hard dressage or western only trainers. The exercises would be difficult in many cases for the rider using a true forward seat hunt saddle unless the stirrups were legthened A LOT.

Very handy for a rider working at home without regular lessons.

2 out of 5 stars In an enlightened age, Cherry is still old school.......2005-02-10

Cherry Hill has come up with some neat little exercise books to offer you training ideas. But she has some outdated ideas on horse training. Compare the advice you get in her book "The Formative Years" with some of the more enlightened trainers published in the last 20 years.

5 out of 5 stars A valuable addition to your equestrian library........2004-01-12

The number of excellent reviews for this book reflect the application to riders of all levels and disciplines. The most valuable aspect of this book is that it encourages the rider to formulate a plan for their schooling sessions and make a conscious decision not to do the same thing day in day out - something we are all guilty of on occasion. Make your schooling sessions more fun for you and your horse with this informative guide.

Book Description

Linda Allen has spent more than 35 years in the equestrian industry, training, riding, jumping, competing, and designing courses. In 101 JUMPING EXERCISES FOR HORSE & RIDER, she provides a logical and consistent series of exercises presented in a fun and appealing way, with clear arena maps and straightforward instructions. For each exercise, Linda covers set-up; how to ride the exercise; steps to make the exercise more difficult; what every successful rider should keep in mind while working; when to move on to the next step; and the benefits of the exercise.

This must-have workbook, a sequel to the successful "read-and-ride" 101 Arena Exercises and 101 Horsemanship & Equitation Patterns, stresses safety, skill building, and success for riders of all ages and levels of experience, whether their interest is in show jumping, eventing, hunters, equitation, or just plain having fun with their horses. Designed in the same user-friendly format as the previous books, with a lay-flat comb binding, the book can be hung on the barn wall or draped over a jump standard in the training area so the reader/rider can refer to it from the saddle.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars great jumping ideas.......2007-08-07

This book has so much info on different exercises and each exercises has little hits about when to use this exercise and what to watch out for while riding it.

5 out of 5 stars Evolution of jumping skills........2007-05-13

This book breaks the demands or jumping down into a logical progression of skills until it takes the insecure beginning rider into a confident partner to the jumping horse. If these lessons are followed correctly, it can also take a training level horse into a skilled show jumper. This book is a must for anyone interested int he discipline of jumping.

4 out of 5 stars Great Jumping book for beginners .......2006-08-19

This book creates a great foundation to train yourself and your horse to excell in jumping no matter what your intentions may be. I personally would recomend this book for all ages and engligh riders even the one's with no intention on jumping.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Book To Keep In Your Tack Room!.......2006-01-14

I have started to do some of these exercises with my Appaloosa gelding. He is ten, but has gone western the two years he has been trained and is very ignorant of english riding skills.

I have been doing these exercises with him, and it really worked! He is now on his way to being a confident jumper. It was pretty easy, too. We set up the cavaletti and cross-rail grids, and followed the patterns described. I am now proud to say I have a hunter in training. This book is highly reccomended to everyone; whether your horse is a confident jumper, or just learning, 101 Jumping Exercises For Horse And Rider is a great source to jumping exercises!

5 out of 5 stars 101 Jumping Exercises for Horse & Rider .......2005-08-02

I bought the book originally to add some variety to my training sessions and to obtain ideas on different exercises. Now both my trainer and I do not jump without the book close by. The different grid exercises have added so much to our workouts! Not only has it helped our horses become more confident it has helped our equitation tremendously. I would highly recommend this book for both beginers and the more experienced rider!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2007-08-09

I find John Lyon's Bringing up Baby very informative! The pictures do a great job illustrating each lesson. I just purchased a filly, and I want to give her the best life possible. I think by following John's techinques you can't go wrong. His videos are great too!

Sometimes we forget to use common sense when working with horses, and if you pay attention to them and learn to properly communicate, you will find a great new enjoyment with your horses!

5 out of 5 stars baby steps.......2007-06-27

this book is great for illustrating kind, consistent lessons to educate yourself and you young weanling. if you want to establish a good relationship, and have your youngster become willing, accepting and to like you, then buy this book.

5 out of 5 stars Concise, easy to follow, great book!.......2007-06-17

This is a great book for those who need to teach a baby, an ex-racer, or any horse the essential basics. Each lesson begins with a description of that you're going to do and why. There's also a list of needed equipment (all of these lessons are to take place in a round pen or arena with the corners "rounded" off). Step-by-step, Lyons takes you through the lesson, providing a picture with each step and a description of what you are doing. I recommend this book to anyone who needs to teach any horse basic ground manners.

5 out of 5 stars John Lyon's Bringing Up Baby.......2007-05-13

Although the methods do not work 100% on all youngsters, it gives the trainer a base to work fro. From there, common sense and knowing the horse you are working with comes into play

5 out of 5 stars Bringing Up Baby.......2007-02-23

John Lyon's Bringing Up Baby is one of the best manuals for early training. The book is well written and organized. It is easy to use when looking for solutions to training problems and the steps to good solid training for your young horse! Superior book!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Clinton Anderson.......2007-10-06

Very thourough step by step book on how to get control and respect of a young or old horse. Great illustrations and easy to read format.

5 out of 5 stars Great information for training horses.......2007-06-27

I have four horses and one of them has some attitude problems. I would have liked to purchase Clinton Anderson's videos, but they're pretty expensive, so I bought this book. It's great and has given me many good ideas for working with my problem horse. It's principles, of course, apply to any horse and this book is a great read for any horse owner.

5 out of 5 stars This book deserves 10 stars.......2007-06-26

This book is so well written, easy to use, easy to understand and easy to follow. The exercises are clear and thoroughly expained with pictures that show the correct technique. There are descriptions of what the horse may try to avoid the exercise as well as what humans may do wrong when performing the exercises; solutions are included on how to fix these problems. This book was well thought out, both in terms of how to train your horse and how to train the rider. My problem horse (a biter with an attitude and an attention span of about 5 nanoseconds) is responding excellently to this program. I purchased Pat Parelli's book and gave up on the book after trying the 1st few exercises (my horse kept trying to bite me). I am thrilled with Clinton's book and am finally enjoying the companionship of my horse. I wish I had done this sooner.

5 out of 5 stars It Doesn't Get Any Better Than This.......2007-06-02

After the Lyons and Parelli prototypes in the world of horse-whispering, along comes Clinton Anderson whose amazing talent intrigues me. I've owned, bred, raised, and trained horses for 64 years and this young man has a lot to teach anyone. I can certainly recommend either his books, seminars, DVDs or all of the above.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book for ground manners.......2007-06-01

There are wonderful, easy to follow, step-by-step instructions for every excercise in this book. I really love the personal remarks made by the two 'students' who were chosen to be a part of this project. Highly recommend!

Book Description

Listen to and communicate with your horse-successfully

"This is a book for everyone who has ever looked at the constantly increasing list of methods and systems marketed as `horsemanship' and wondered which of the many possible approaches would be most suitable for a particular behavior problem. Gincy Bucklin has distilled her many years of experience with horses and riders into a very useful, step-by-step, hands-on book. Bucklin's writing is smooth and easy to read, and no matter where you open this book, you'll find that her deep respect and affection for both equines and humans shines through."
-Dr. Jessica Jahiel, author of Riding for the Rest of Us

"Gincy Bucklin uses her decades-long experience with horses to answer that most frequently asked question: `Why did my horse do that?' And she comes up with creative solutions that weave together traditional horse handling with the best of modern horse training, including my own personal favorite, clicker training."
-Alexandra Kurland, author of Clicker Training for Your Horse and The Click That Teaches video lesson series

It takes time for a horse to learn everything we want him to know. If we don't make our intentions clear to him in ways that he can understand, or if we don't listen to what he wants, problems may result. Featuring easy-to-follow, step-by-step advice, What Your Horse Wants You to Know reveals how to communicate effectively with your horse to create an atmosphere of mutual cooperation.

What Your Horse Wants You to Know focuses on improving your horse's behavior on the ground, so you can develop relationship and communications skills without the more challenging problems that arise once you're on his back.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Equine enthusiast.......2007-07-16

Very good reference book. Author presents from the horse's point of view which is how the title reads. As usual, however, the one problem that my hose developed is missing. But that may be expected since horses don't often read.

5 out of 5 stars A Must-Have for All Horse Owners.......2007-04-12

Whether you're a beginning horse trainer or more advanced, and no matter what kind of training you are into, this important reference guide will teach you to communicate with your horse.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book !!.......2007-03-06

Gincy has provided a wonderful resource for all horse owners whether beginners or seasoned experts. No matter what discipline you are involved with, this book will become a favourite. It applies to horses beginning their education as well as seasoned competitors, ridden or driven, and just much loved family pets.

The basis for all relationships with our horses is communication. Gincy explains clearly how to read what your horse is saying to you and how to clearly communicate your instructions to him.

This book, like Gincy's others, is full of Gincy's very perceptive insights into equine behavior and motivation. At the same time, she generously cites highlights from the work of other successful trainers and instructors. She totally understands and loves her subject. She isolates each 'problem' or unwanted behavior, explains what it means and not only tells us how to change it but also what not to do.

For the beginner, this book provides a ready reference to cover hundreds of situations that arise in our day to day association with our horse or pony. For the experienced horse person, it is a compendium of knowledge that is so far unequaled in training literature.

Aside from all that, it is an entertaining read.

It is now my #1 gift-giving book for friends who are committed to working seriously with their horses. It is easy to understand, concise, values my limited time. M

5 out of 5 stars Very good book.......2007-07-13

I really like this book. It gave me some good tools for working with my young horse.

5 out of 5 stars if you love your horse(s) as much as we do, get this book!!!.......2007-05-13

Even if you have a whole shelf filled with books on horses, and you're lucky enough to have at least one of these magnificent creatures to care for, this book is a must have. we are still practicing a few of the technics currently on our mare. She loves the contact(and touching).
and the author also covers the issues of horses who do not like to be handled or touched due to accidents, abuse, etc. and how to gain their trust. And most importantly,it makes you more attuned to their needs in general.

2 out of 5 stars Not Quite the "Ultimate".......2007-05-07

I would say the book is half training and half sensory / massage techniques. Granted the techniques are incorporated into her training methodology, but it's a dual education. Learning the massage techniques, their purpose and results, then learn how to incorporate them into the appropriate training methodology.

I believe the methods are worthwhile, but there's a large human learning curve. To me it's a book that must be read at least twice, and then referred to constantly per training result needed.

With that said, independent of training, I have used a few of the massage techniques on my horses with great results. But with general life, (work, children, husband, etc....) in the several months I've had the book I've only progressed to using several of the massage techniques. I've referred to other books for training help.

I like the book, it's written well (provided I read it twice, the progression makes sense to me). I do not see it as a straight forward guide to training. More so a guide that is great when I have time to devote to it's philosophies and learn the massage base techniques first that accompany the training.

For straight forward training assistance I prefer Clint Anderson, Lynn Palm, Parelli and John Lyons (to name a few).

4 out of 5 stars Stretch Exercises for Your Horse: The Path to Perfect Suppleness.......2007-05-16

Very informative. I learned how to stretch the muscle so that the horse was more supple and less likely be to injury in competition and everyday use

4 out of 5 stars An Important Step to Riding Well.......2007-05-10

One of the greatest mistakes riders make is not preparing their horses to rider. They just jump on and go. They don't warm the horses up or stretch them after they have worked to keep muscles supple. Then they wonder why their horses become lame or injured. The stretches suggested in this book are a great way to treat your horse like the athlete he is.

5 out of 5 stars Great reference.......2007-05-02

For whoever said there is nothing new in this book you must be a very proficient and contentiousness horse person. I found this book pack full of goodies. Perhaps there is nothing "new" for you, but for most horse owners it is a fantastic book.

It has clear illustrations of all the stretches and explanations about why you do them. I also find this a good book for taking out to the barn and working through with my horses.

They enjoy the change from being ridden and the exercises also make good warm up and cool downs. They are the basic exercises but you don't really need to learn 999 different exercises. Just do the ones in this book well.

5 out of 5 stars Equine Stretching Routines.......2007-04-12

Learn your horse's anatomy and put your new knowledge to work as you train your horse and develop stretching routines.

3 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2007-07-30

This book was a disappointment to me, I found the formatting to be a huge distraction. The black and white photos are dark, the cartoon graphics are unappealing, and I was expecting it to be more demonstrative and less "block paragraph" and wordy. I have picked it up three times since I bought it and just cannot work my way through it. I'm a visual learner and this book is definitely not overly visual.

If I'd gotten a better "look inside", I would not have purchased this book and gone for one that more clearly illustrated what was being done.

5 out of 5 stars Real help for your riding.......2007-05-21

Ms. Dulak has presented a book that will provide real help for any serious rider. But special help will be found for riders with conformational flaws. That would cover most riders but naturally endowed and gifted riders may also find ways to improve.

I have ridden for 40 plus years with instructors from all over the spectrum and this is the first realistic attempt to help get to the real root of position problems.

I am still working on the exercises and expect it will be some months to be ingrained but I already see improvement in the way my horses go after one month.

This will take committment but any serious rider has plenty of that.

5 out of 5 stars Great Pilates with the Dressage twist.......2007-04-01

I am enjoying this book very much. The explanations are thorough and easy to understand and the relation to Dressage (which is why I began Pilates) is wonderful. I especially like the open leg rocker illustration on the back of a horse now I picture that as I ride around the arena. Gives you a great perspective on what your position on the horse should be and how it should feel. I have great admiration for the athletic abilities of the riders and their horses this book helps me get closer to my horse and sit on him with more confidence and finesse. Thank you Janice

5 out of 5 stars Very useful.......2007-01-28

I have just started using this book, but I can it will be very useful in getting me more fit as a dressage rider.

kind of elementary for what i was expecting, but i suppose it would be helpful to someone at that level - all in all it is a pretty good book

5 out of 5 stars Literary treasure.......2007-03-02

You do not need to be a horse whisperer, or even a cowboy to enjoy this book. With Ms. Marks as my guide, I was able to learn things about these animals I didn't know like: "Sometimes you can foresee a negative pattern starting up; for example, when you braid a horse, he realizes that he's going to a show and goes off his feed. If this is the case, change his routine to avoid any anxiety starting." Did you know this?

What do you see when you see a horse? When I see a horse, I see an animal whose ancestors time and time again were the only creatures on earth standing between my ancestors and certain death. And I realize that I might not even be here if it were not for these majestic animals. I do what I can for them knowing that it is enough that I am of value to somebody today. I like this book and it has some interesting stories, but if you already participate in a program like Parelli, etc. (as I do) then there isn't really any new information. Buying the book is cheaper, but buying the Parelli DVD program gives you a lot more.

If I wasn't doing Parelli, then this book would be a good start. It would be helpful if there was more trouble-shooting.

I have bought scads of books as I bought my first horse and was very hungry for guidance. Many books 'assume' alot about where you are in your progress and experience level and many important facts can be overlooked or touched on briefly without enough discussion. Some books even come right out and say, if you don't know how, don't proceed, etc. Thats a fine how do you do after you just spent $20 for a book entitled the first 2 years!!!!
Horses are big, unpredictable animals. Be smart, spend a little money and get professional help in the beginning. If you are determined to learn everything you can, you will be fine. Don't ever be complacent. Friends and neighbors at the boarding stable are always helpful but noone is perfect or knows it all. If they say they do, run, don't walk! Of all the books on horse behavior, relations between the handler and horse, problem solving, and starting young horses, this one has been the most helpful and complete and sure to stay here in my library for many years to come. I can't recommend it enough.

The following is a copy of an email I sent to Kelly recently.

Hello Kelly,
My name is Laura and I live in California...I need to thank you for your inspiration....I purchased your book....How to teach your horse perfect manners....2 months after I purchased an 8 yr old Morgan gelding...He was a barrel racer and had terrible manners....With time and patience and tips from your book i was able to catch him and join up....Also taught him to stand still to be mounted...This even the trainer could not do...Anyway
My husband is interested in a horse that is kept out where i board my Morgan....The new horse is a 6 yr old Quarter horse...When I asked the stable owner if I could work with this horse her response was...."If you can catch him, he is uncatchable"....With patience I caught him.,,,It took 20 minutes but I did it....My husband has no horse experience except to ride a rental horse, so he sat back in awe as I worked this "Uncatchable" horse....I handed my husband the lead rope and said "There you go" He said "You looked like the lady in the book you have" I couldn't have been prouder....We took the horse to the stable and groomed him....He seemed to like it...
So today I went to the ranch...Just me....And went to the horse's pasture...3 minutes later I have the "Uncatchable" horse again in halter....This time we went to the round pen and I have to tell you that we joined up in less then 4 minutes....he so wanted to be with me,,,,he kept turning and looking at me.....but I kept him going for a few circuits then released pressure and turned away.....he walked right up behind me.....and followed me....I cried....

My husband then showed up.(I called him and told him to come). I taught him how to halter and then stepped out of the round pen....the horse Joined up with my husband....I cried again....My husband was literally beaming with pride....He then took the horse for a nice walk around the stables....

I have to again thank you....I can catch the most uncatchable horse at the boarding faciliy thanks to your book.....Much to the amazement of the stable owner,,,,who states she has never been able to catch him.....She said he was a cowboy horse and they had to rope him to catch him.....NOT anymore....Now he is my husbands horse....
Thank you.

Also I may add that a few days later after working with my husband and teaching him the right body language, he was able to approach the horse and halter him, in pasture.

Book Description

Thoroughbred trainer Carl Nafzger took 84 year-old Frances Genter's gawky yearling, Unbridled, and turned him into a Kentucky Derby winner and Breeders' Cup Champion. Millions of television viewers were touched as Nafzger hugged the frail first lady of the turf and declared, "You've won the Kentucky Derby! I love you!" Now Nafzger gives you his methods for developing champion Thoroughbreds in his book, Traits of a Winner: The Formula for Developing Thoroughbred Racehorses. In it he explains the four traits every champion racehorse must have and how to find those traits and develop them. Nafzger explains the key elements in successful Thoroughbred ownership. He tells you what to look for in a racing prospect, how much you should spend and how to bid during an auction. Nafzger gives you the key elements to breaking young horses so they reach the racetrack fit and ready to go to work. Once at the track, Nafzger tells you how to get "inside the horse's mind" and design a training program specifically for the individual. Nafzger shares his secrets for winning. He tells you when you should hire the best jockey and when you shouldn't, how to shoe your horses so they remain sound, and how to feed for optimum performance. You will learn how to ship into races so your horse arrives ready to race, how to campaign the Derby prospect, allowance runners, older horses and claimers.

5 out of 5 stars Carl Nafzger strikes again with Street Sense!.......2007-05-14

Carl's treatise on Thoroughbred training deserves another look now that he has won the Kentucky Derby again (2007) with Street Sense.
Carl and Wanda are a class act, he isn't desparately entering horses in the Kentucky Derby so his owners can have cocktail party conversation like so many of the his contemporaries seem to be doing now.
Carl lets the horse bring them to the Derby, if he's worthy.

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring real life .......2007-01-05

Carl and Wanda Nafzger set goals and attained them in the highest manner in a horse business that often takes advantage of newcomers. The writer also gives a very clear picture of how horses attain the rarified status of "Stakes Horses" or continue on to the best of their abilities as "claimers" or in other endeavors. We bought and gave as holiday gifts five copies of this valuable story.

5 out of 5 stars Great.......2000-08-05

this book is so awesome. carl nafzger is a well renowen trainer who can do wonders with a horse. this book tells just how good he really is. i recomend this book to other horsemen and horse racing fans all over the world!!

3 out of 5 stars worthwhile.......2000-05-02

This is a book by a very conventional trainer about the training and care of Unbridled to win the Derby and Breeder's Cup. Mr. Nafzger sets out the training program of Unbridled, and for his stable, and as such the book gives a valuable insight into the methods of one successful trainer. I think Mr.Nafzger is to be congratulated and thanked for putting all this in writing. If you want to know how the majority of your trainers at the race track operate, this book is most instructive.

4 out of 5 stars Very informative and easy to understand.......1999-06-06

Carl Nafzger goes a great job going over the aspects of race horse training in a manor even a person not involved in racing can follow. Great Book for all horseman and wanna be horseman
