5 out of 5 stars very good.......2007-09-30

this book was a very good read. i would highly reccomend the series to any cat lover. you should always read the books in order, and NEVER read the backs or the character lists of a book ahead of you!!!! I found out something that you will find out in book #6 when I was reading book #4. it kind of ruined book #5 in a way. This book is definately good

5 out of 5 stars Good to the last page and beyond.......2007-08-26

As will all the Warrior series, I loved this book as well. It is leading up to the big finale of the 6th book and many dangers face the cats in this book. As usual, it kept me up at night reading to find out what would happen next and how the cats would ever get out of each new situation they found themselves in. A great read as always. Can't get enough of the Warrior books. Love each and every one of them and you don't have to be a "kit" to enjoy them. I am 48 and look forward to the next book whenever I finish one.

4 out of 5 stars Warriors: A Dangerous Path.......2007-06-06

Fireheart is leading his clan through the dark times. He used to be a kittypet and others still tease him. It's hard for him to be a deputy when his leader is going crazy. It's also hard for him to believe other cats sometimes, but he will have to in order to save his from an evil Shadow clan leader.

I would recommend this book because it's very exciting. Sometimes it's sad, sometimes it's happy, and sometimes it's a little bit scary. This is a great book for anyone who loves animals, especially cats.

5 out of 5 stars Dog Pack Escapes.......2007-06-06

In this amazing book of the series Warriors, Fireheart finds out that Tigerclaw, the former deputy of Thunderclan that tried to kill Bluestar, became leader of Shadowclan and got his new name (Tigerstar) and nine lives from Starclan. Thunderclan's leader, Bluestar, is still dealling with the fact that Tigerstar betray her. When Fireheart learns of a dog pack on the loose, Bluestar thinks that they are just strays and will go back to their home soon. When Fireheart finds out that all this connects to Tigerstar, he relizes that he will have to save the Clan. But will it be to late to save his own leader? I recomend this book to kids that love books full of suspence and adventure.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Book from a Great Series.......2007-01-08

A Dangerous Path by Erin Hunter is the fifth book in the original Warriors series. The main character, Fireheart, Thunderclan deputy, is at head of the Thunderclan cats at a Gathering when he finds out that the new Shadowclan leader is his enemy, Tigerclaw or Tigerstar now, the former Thunderclan deputy. When it is reported back to Bluestar, Thunderclan leader, that the cat who had earlier tried to kill her, was now a clan leader, her already troubled mind worsened as she declared war with the cat's ancestors, Starclan, and she believes the cats in Thunderclan are going to betray her. So Fireheart is trying his best to hide Bluestar's condition from the rest of the clan. But on top of all of this, Fireheart gets warnings from Starclan about a 'pack' that threatens the lives of Thunderclan.

I enjoyed this book because of my love for cats, but it was also frustrating and sad at times. Erin Hunter did a good job describing the events in the book. I got really frustrated with Bluestar when she thought she was at war with Starclan. But I could kind of see how she could read events that happened to her and her clan and how they could make her think that they meant that her ancestors where abandoning her. I do not see how she thought that her cats were traitors, especially Fireheart; he was the one who saved her from Tigerstar when he tried to kill her. Because she thought the Thuderclan cats would betray her, some very sad events took place. The end is sad as well but not all was bad.

I recommend this book, and all of the other Warriors books.

Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

5 out of 5 stars Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

5 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2007-03-07

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Adorable pups, incredible design.......2007-07-26

I have a little experience in needle felting and wet felting, but I've never attempted anything 3-D like this before. I'm happy to say I just completed my first little fleece dog today, and I think the instructions are just incredible. Not only does the author include step-by-step photos and instructions, but she includes actual-size "diagrams", similar to blueprints, for each dog in the book. The only material I cannot find locally are the eyes, so I made do with ball-tipped sewing pins. I can't wait to make a little companion for my first pup! I love this book. The photography and book design is modern and appealing, also.

2 out of 5 stars Too complicated!.......2007-05-13

This book has nice pictures and it is very well organized but if you don't have experience you will find it very difficult. I decided to return it since I didn't have any previous experience on felting and this book don't help begginers at all.The materials are also very hard to find too, at least in small towns....

4 out of 5 stars SOOOOO Cute!!!.......2007-03-23

I was so excited when I saw this book! I love both dogs and fleece, so it seemed a natural choice for me. The dogs are so realistic and the directions are quite clear. I haven't yet made any of the dogs, but I do understand there will be a learning curve as I learn to manipulate the fleece and needles to churn out my own, cute dogs made of wool! It's a great book and I would recommend it to any other fiber artists!

"This little dog is under a spell and needs your help. To free him, you must be given four special things:

A gift from a ship lost at sea,
A gift from the prairie blue,
A gift from a forest far away,
A gift from a kangaroo."

How would you feel if you found a note like this in your magic tree house? Eight-year-old Jack and his 7-year-old sister Annie love the funny, enchanted dog Teddy--and know they have no choice but to collect the gifts and break the mysterious spell. In Tigers at Twilight--the 19th adventure in award-winning author Mary Pope Osborne's popular Magic Tree House series--these brave, resourceful children have already found the first two gifts, and must find the third in "a forest far away." Knowing that the books in Morgan Le Fey's magic tree house have the power to transport them all over the world, they see their next destination on the cover of Wildlife of India. Once in the thick of the Indian jungle, it doesn't take them long to make friends with the monkeys, to see the huge gashes that tiger claws have made on the tree trunks, and to spot a python. This story is straight out of an episode of Wild Kingdom; the children spot animal after animal, with only a few close calls. When they find a rare tiger in a poacher's trap, however, the story turns around, and the children are eventually led to the third gift. A tribute to the disappearing tiger, and an animal-filled, action-focused adventure with plenty of cartoon-style illustrations, this slight book is sure to keep kids' attention. A generous layout combined with simple, short sentences promote quick reading that will build confidence in beginning readers. (Ages 4 to 8)

Book Description

Jack and Annie are whisked back in time to the jungle of India where they'll meet snakes and tigers and find ancient ruins.

My 1st grader hates to put it down, he would rather read Magic Tree House books, than play video games. He even reads them to his class and explains the story for show and tell. In his kindergarten class the teacher would also let him read the Magic Tree House books out loud, not to give her a break, but to promote reading out loud. Great books!

Magic Tree House: Tigers at Twilight # 19
by Mary Pope Osborne

Would you be excited if you had a tree house that could travel through time? That's what happens to 8 year-old Jack and 7 year-old Annie in the book Tigers at Twilight #19 by Mary Pope Osborne. So far this is the best book I read in the series because a tiger gets stuck in a bear trap and the kids try to rescue it. Then, the tiger is about to attack them, but I'm not saying any more. You should read the book to find out what happens.

5 out of 5 stars A fun read.......2007-08-05

A little girl named Treva tells her story wen she had trouble with trolls. She lives on the slopes of Mount Baldy and was hiking it to visit her cousin who lives on the other side. With her is her dog Tuffi. Trouble happens along the way as a troll will jump out and declare "I want dog"

She tricks them into taking pieces of her clothing but eventually she reaches the top and discovers they still want the dog. She declares she can fly with her skies but needs all her cloths back. She asks for a push but they can't since they are holding Tuffi. She offers to hold the dog and away she skis to the cries of "Dog, Dog, Dog!"

This is a fun little story and my little girl has taken to it. Probably because the artwork is very good!

There is also a small side story of a hedgehog who wanders into the home of the trolls.

This is a sweet well written and drawn story that will make for any child's bedtime reading. Be prepared to hand over the book so the pictures may be viewed.

4 out of 5 stars How To Outsmart Trolls.......2004-11-25

Treva lives on the slopes of Mount Baldy. One day she goes to visit a relative on the other side. She will climb up with her dog and then ski down the other side. But on the way up she runs into the trolls. Each troll she meets is interested in her dog. Treva manages to trick each of them into taking some of her clothing instead (mittens, hat, sweater, boots). But just at the top the trolls decide they still want the dog. Treva has one more trick up her sleeve and winds up same with her dog and all of her clothing. The ultimate fate of the trolls is quite interesting.

This is a very nice story with an intelligent and quick-thinking protagonist. Troll legend has been change a little. There is no mention of the trolls wanting to eat the dog (a la Billy Goats Gruff) but instead to help warm them and act as a pack animal. Their fate is also one I am unfamiliar with. Many stories have trolls turn to stone in the sunlight but this transformation is quite interesting.

The illustrations are just what you expect from Jan Brett; beautiful and packed with detail. Earrings and hair ribbons should be paid attention to as well as the happy hedgehog who invades the trolls' home. A truly delightful story from an author who has written more stories about clothes than you can imagine (The Hat, The Mitten, Armadillo Rodeo, Etc).

5 out of 5 stars WOW, don't hesitate, read this book.......2003-10-29

As parents, bibliophiles, and teachers, we are always on the lookout for good children's books and books with positive girl characters are always needed. This one is fabulous. Treva is smart, creative, courageous, loving, strong, competent and clever. This is exactly the kind of child that we would want our 2 1/2 year old son to be exposed to. It's a fun adventure story that shows how a child can be creative and use their imagination and other intellectual abilities to problem solve and come up with a plan in a tough situation (without resorting to physical force) and then use their physical and creative skills in executing their plan. The last few sentences of the book also add a more abstract, creative idea that expands the depth of the book depending on the age and abilities of the child who's hearing the story. The illustrations are well done - they're good and easy to follow and help the child to understand the story, They also provide additional details and threads for the child to explore. And, something I'm always on the lookout for, it was a great alternative troll story. On the chance that most of his fellow schoolmates would be talking about pirates, superheroes, fairy tale characters and such, I didn't want my son to have no idea what others were referring to simply because we tended to avoid such stories because they tend to be completely objectionable in terms of their values and characters. So, I'm always on the lookout for good alternatives, and this was a very positive way to introduce him to a troll. (As a side note, a good alternative for superheroes is "Max" by Bob Grahm; for pirates try "Pirate Pete", "Edward and the Pirates" and "Pirate Pink"; and there are many fractured fairy tales which are clear winners over the traditional sexist, violent, etc fairy tales, e.g. "The Three Little Wolves and the Big Bad Pig", "Wolf" by Becky Bloom, "The Big Bad Wolf is Good", "The Emperor [Penguin] has no clothes", and on video - CinderElmo - where Elmo goes to the Princesses ball). This was my first exposure to Jan Brett and I'm looking forward to more books.

5 out of 5 stars A delightefull tale of an adventurous hike.......2003-10-08

Treva, a girl in Norway wants to go visit her cousin on the other side of a mountain near her home so off she goes with her dog, and her skis straped to her back. Her little hike soon meets with excitement when a troll tries to kidnap her dog! She comes up with a clever scheme to trick this troll, and several more trolls afterwards. At the end, she manages to trick all the trolls again at once, and gets back her mittens, gloves, hat, sweater, skis and of course, her dog!

The illustrations are absoutely beautiful, and really bring life to the story.

5 out of 5 stars Trouble with trolls.......2002-10-31

This book Trouble With Trolls is a great book for both readers young and old. It is about a girl named Treva who decides to take a hike over a mountain to see her cousin. On the way up the mountain Treva runs into some trolls who want her dog,but she tricks them by giving them her boots and things like that. In the end she gets away with her dog and all her stuff back. I enjoyed this book alot myself and if you have kids I'm sure they would enjoy it to.

Book Description

Flora knows better than to take shortcuts in her family home, Crackpot Hall--the house has eleven thousand rooms, and ever since her mother banished the magickal butler, those rooms move around at random. But Flora is late for school, so she takes the unpredictable elevator anyway. Huge mistake. Lost in her own house, she stumbles upon the long-banished butler--and into a mind-blowing muddle of intrigue and betrayal that changes her world forever.
Full of wildly clever plot twists, this extraordinary first novel establishes Ysabeau Wilce as a compelling new voice in teen fantasy.

5 out of 5 stars once of the best of 2007 so far!.......2007-08-18

Well, after that title, there isn't much more to say except that Flora is a
wonderfully loveable girl and I think you'll enjoy getting to know her!
Oh, all right, I do have more to say:) Flora's father is mad, her mother is a general and the best line in a book I've ever read is in chapter 2. This is a strange and beautifully unique tale. This might be a hard sell for some of the teens I know, but it won't stop me from recommending it to everyone.

5 out of 5 stars Is the world ready for Wilce?.......2007-07-14

Here's a fact: Ysabeau S. Wilce is profoundly original. If you read all the customer reviews here, you'll get the sense that this is not your formula fantasy. But let's make that point more clearly--you will never read another story like this one (unless, possibly, it's her next one, which we all eagerly anticipate).

This is the opportunity to get in on the ground floor of what could, and certainly should, be the next story franchise that graduates from cult status to mainstream blockbuster. Wilce doesn't sugar coat the risks of adolescence: she dips them in ice cream, lights them on fire, and serves the reader a flaming torch of strange wonder.

Laughter and thrilling excitement are delightful companions all through this romp. The subtitle gives a sense of the former, but don't underestimate Wilce's storytelling: great characters in real trouble make for great reading, and Flora is a heroine who speaks equally to the reality as well as the ambitions of young people.

Oh yes, and while this is not specifically a unique observation, I'd also like to note that it is always refreshing to find a fantasy that does not take place in something that could pass for Northern Europe.

3 out of 5 stars Waiting for Number 2.......2007-07-11

I'm not sure yet how I feel about this book. I like it but then again I don't. What I like about it is the originality of the story. The world and its characters are fully developed and very interesting, especially Flora. What I really like about Flora is that she is not your average cookie-cutter, in-your-face, outspoken heroine who saves herself by swinging a sword. Flora on the other hand has self-confidence issues, often doubts her own abilities and has the same faults as any other regular teenager, which make her character more genuine. What I don't like about this novel is that the story itself seems to move rather unsteadily. It slows down then speeds up then slows down again. I also had a little trouble understanding some of the magic or "Current" lingo. A short glossary could have helped that. There are also a lot of cliffhangers that hopefully will turn up in the next book. All in all this book was good but not great, hopefully the second will be better.

5 out of 5 stars Original, spirited, and funny.......2007-06-04

Ysabeau Wilce has created a truly original imaginary world refreshingly free of the cliches of the fantasy genre. What's more, she's provided the perfect tour guide to this world: Flora Fyrdraaca, an irreverent, eager, believably adolescent narrator scheming to escape the expectations of her family and become a Ranger--a magic-using secret agent--instead of following family tradition into the army, madness, and doom. Assigned to write a speech in praise of her noble House, Flora narrowly rejects openings like "Crackpot Hall has 11,000 rooms but only one potty." Indeed, the ancestral pile has seen better days, partly for reasons bound up in the power plays of Flora's illustrious mother, a famous general who tolerates no insubordination and has disabled the magical Butler that should keep the house in order. Motivated partly by sympathy and partly by the desire to have someone else muck out the stable, Flora sets herself a quest to restore the Butler to his rightful place, but she soon discovers that the price of a little help with the housework can be, almost literally, her soul. Flora's quirky comic voice always keeps the danger of her predicament and the dysfunctionality of her family from weighing down the story, which bounces lightly along to its conclusion--or rather, temporary conclusion, because this is the first volume of a trilogy. I'm no Young Adult, and this is a Young Adult book, but I can hardly wait for Volume 2.

5 out of 5 stars Cliché Free, Fresh Fantasy.......2007-06-03

I purchased this book for my daughter after reading Charles de Lint's favorable review in Fantasy & Science Fiction Magazine (he's rarely steered me wrong) and after growing impatient waiting for her to begin it, I picked it up to skim the first few pages for myself. There was no skimming; I was immediately absorbed and read the book in one sitting. There was no tired "hero's journey" cliché where the orphan, unaware of his great heritage, begins on a lowly farm. There were innovative and captivating devices, smooth wordsmithing, and the kind of intelligent, brave female protagonist I like my daughter to spend time with. Be sure to check out the author's website and blog.

Book Description

"These figs are very special," the woman whispered. "They can make your dreams come true." -- Thus Monsieur Bibot, the cold-hearted dentist, was given two ordinary-looking figs as payment for extracting a tooth from an old woman's mouth. Monsieur Bibot refused to believe such nonsense and proceeded to eat one of the figs for a bedtime snack. Although it was possibly the finest, sweetest fig he had ever tasted, it wasn't until the next morning that Monsieur Bibot realized it indeed had the power to make his dreams come true. While dragging his poor dog, Marcel, out for his walk, he discovered that his strange dream from the night before was becoming all too real. Determined to make good use of the second fig, Monsieur Bibot learns to control is dreams. But can he control Marcel? Once again Chris Van Allsburg explores the mysterious territory between fantasy and reality in an uncanny tale that will intrigue readers of all ages.

5 out of 5 stars A WELL TOLD STORY AND THE ILLUSTRATIONS ARE TOP LINE........2007-09-30

I can think of no other way of discribing this book, other tha simply "quirky." It is an absolute delight for both young and old. It is a simple story of an uptight dentist, a long suffering dog, an old, poor lady down on her luck, and two very interesting, magic figs that will make your dreams come true. The dentist takes the two majic figs as something of a payment for dental work done for the old lady. Enough of the story line. The art work in this small book is absolutely wonderful. The longer you study each frame, the better it gets. The text is quite simple and very easy to understand. The story explores a side of human nature (for some people) that needs to be explored. Your kids will be running into individual like our unlikeable dentist all of their lives and this book will give them something to remember and snicker about as they get older. Now some folk, I like to call them the "hand-wringers" will think that the story, and the way it is told, may not be appropriate for younger children. This of course is the responsibility of each indvidual parent to make this decision, but for the life of me, I cannot find the objection here. This tale gives the parent loads of little items that can be discussed with the child as the story is being read, and there are many little lessons to be learned here. I have read this book to children in the class room as young as six and they all certainly got the meaning of the story, enjoyed it, and loved it when the dentist got what was coming to him. Let us not underestimate the brightness of our children. In many ways the are much smarter than we are. Recommened this one highly. (Love the little dog, by the way).

5 out of 5 stars Imaginative and beautiful.......2007-07-27

Van Allsburg, as usual, brings us a delightful tale about a "stiff" dentist and his just desserts. The illustrations are typical Allsburg, beautiful and masterful. Somewhat of a morality tale about what might happen if you don't treat others with kindness, but not overt. Very imaginative and engaging. Best for children ages 6-10.

4 out of 5 stars This modern fable is classic Van Allsburg.......2007-06-02

THE SWEETEST FIG combines rather ordinary settings with magic and mystery similarly to what Van Allsburg does in his picture book classics JUMANJI, THE STRANGER, and THE POLAR EXPRESS. The setting of THE SWEETEST FIG is Paris and our main character is a nasty dentist named Bibot living with his long suffering dog Marcel. Through magical means Bibot gets his comeuppance and Marcel the upper hand by the end of the story. Like many picture books (including many of Van Allsburg's) the illustrations, theme and language are really too sophisticated for the Preschool/Kindergarten picture book crowd and can be much better appreciated by children in elementary/middle school. Bibot does appear in his underwear in one scene and there is some implied violence in some of the illustrations but nothing else to make this clever story objectionable to the average reader.

1 out of 5 stars Not appropriate for children........2007-05-04

Art is beautiful but content is not appropriate for children. Possibly appropriate for a high school student but not for an elementary student. Certainly not appropriate for a preschooler. This is classified as an illustrated children's book. I would recommend reviewing the book in a library or a bookstore prior to purchasing it on amazon so as not to risk the time, effort, and a not-in-full refund or the return shipping rate.

5 out of 5 stars *Isaac Newton's Favorite FIG TALE*.......2006-07-20

From what place of antiquity does this Tale come? It doubtless comes from an intersection of mystery and imagination. The reader's response need only be Fits of Laughter . . . and . . . "Hail, Marcel"!

The tale, Chris Van Allsburg's "The Sweetest Fig," might be too short for the rules of some contests, such as Brown County INDIANA's annual Tall Tale Event that all hopeful writers should investigate via the Nashville/Brown County Public Library. But it is long on surreal humor.

A stiff-necked dentist Monsieur Bibot grudgingly accepts two "very special" figs in payment for a wretched old woman's tooth extraction . We sometimes think the phrase "life-changing" is over-worked, but it is 100% accurate with the case of these FIGS. The author has written one of the TALLEST OF SHORT TALES that Reviewer mcHAIKU has ever 'doubled up' over! Now YOU can join in the laughs.

5 out of 5 stars Rakkety Tam.......2007-07-28

A Redwall book - and that means fun dialog, great descriptions of feasts, excellent villans and heros, and a few minor variations on the common framework.

You can most likely jump in anywhere in the series, so if you haven't read any others you *could* start here. However, for most this will be a story read along the way, either in order of publication or in order of the timeline posted on the Redwall site - me, I like to go in publishing order. Enjoy!

It is about a young squirrel who is a huge trouble maker who knows he should do something good in his life. But there is someone who finds out about Tammo and tries to kill him.I can only say someone dies who will it be I.......cannot say.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful reading for all ages .......2006-09-09

This book is from an incredibly well written series starting with the original "Redwall" book. The "formula" is good against evil, loyalty and honor with only the glory of a job well done and the genuine gratitude that goes to those who stand up for what good and right no matter what the bad guys promise. Another tale in a not to be missed series of books for all-age readers

5 out of 5 stars One of Redwalls's best!.......2006-08-12

I loved this book from start to finish, it had a twist having a hero that didn't come from redwall,(Most of them do). It had me on the edge of my seat during the final battle between Tam and Gulo, the characters were great; as always, and it was just, in general a good book. My favorite creatures are squirrels so i loved it,i cant wait to read the next redwall book!

Not so much a book as it is three-dimensional art, Art Spiegelman's Open Me ... I'm a Dog! is a fun romp through the usual expectations of children's stories, in this case a dog who is transformed into a book by a wizard. As the "book" tries to make its way back into being a dog, it gets turned into a variety of other things. Every page is filled with that sense of innocent wonder that appeals to children and adults alike. And after you finish the story (or before you even get to it), you can't help but be amazed by the completeness of the book/dog, from the furry end papers to the attached leash. Just don't let your cat see it.

Book Description

Through the magic of words and pictures leaps a book that's not only playful as a puppy -- it IS a puppy! Honest.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars It's a dog...it's a book!?!.......2006-04-18

This book is so creative. The basic premise is that the book is not ABOUT a dog... it IS a dog. The story revolves around how he got there. It is very "hands on" and engages the reader immediately. It would be a fantastic gift for a little animal lover who isn't able to have a pet of his/her own. This is one dog who is allowed where other pets can't go and after the initial cost, there is no feeding or clean-up! What more could you want in a pet?

5 out of 5 stars Open Me... I'm A Dog.......2006-03-03

Delightful book! The tactile features, coupled with the story, make this one of the most-special children's books -- that's also appropriate to give any adult dog lover or fan of Spiegelman!

5 out of 5 stars People with Allergies Will Love This Dog.......2005-07-16

This is a pet dog that doesn't make you sneeze or itch. It doesn't shed or have fleas. Best of all, it doesn't bite or do its business on the carpet. Parents can gladly get this pet for children. Of course, this book would never take the place of a real thing, but it's a pleasure to read it. I can read it repeatedly (as children always want you to do) and not get tired of it. A parent can't help but get into character while reading the book aloud.

The book's insides have a felt / velvet feel, so it gives the child something to touch. It has a leash that can act as a bookmark or make it easy to "walk the dog." The illustrations are colorful and well done. Adults and children will laugh and enjoy this one.

The author does a superb job with his play on words. Big frog means BIG, human-sized frog. German Shepherd... not a dog. Literally, German sheep herder. It has a fairy tale feel with humor thrown in. I can't imagine who wouldn't like this book unless as one reviewer said, a person who has problems with witches in children's stories.

5 out of 5 stars Clever, witty, fun.......2005-01-25

I discovered this book...er, dog, hiding out on a shelf in a used bookstore. I flipped through it and put it back and went back the next day to buy it because I couldn't get it out of my head. It's clever and fun. Has a story line and plot, but short enough to hold my 3 month old's attention all the way through. We've read it twice today already. I like the velvety front and end pages, the pop-up wagging tail and the story that takes the reader through enchanted woods, to a mountain in Germany and back to a youngster's own bedroom if he/she wishes. A new classic!

5 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK!.......2004-11-27

We just read this and my kids (ages 7, 5, and 3.5) are still not sure whether it is a book, or a dog............... Fabulous book!!! Thanks, Mr. Spiegelman!!

As young Tammo dreams of joining the Long Patrol--the legendary army of fighting hares that serves the Lady Cregga Rose Eyes, Ruler of Salamandastron--the brutal reality of a battle with Damug Warfang's mighty battalion of savage Rapscallions fast approaches.

Brian Jacques has proved time and time again his ability to transport readers into a world of fantasy and adventure that many writers of adult books would love to emulate. The Long Patrol certainly proves the point yet again, but distinguishes itself by being perhaps the very best of all the Redwall books so far. Relying less and less on the old, familiar Redwall characters and more and more on the ingenuity and passion of younger blood, The Long Patrol will certainly win Jacques a fresh following while continuing to delight his existing army of fans. --Susan Harrison

Book Description

The murderous Rapscallion army is on the move. Dealt a humiliating defeat by Lady Cregga Rose Eyes, the Badger Lady of Salamandastron, who still pursues them, the Rapscallions are heading inland to take an even greater prize: the peaceful Abbey of Redwall. The elite fighting unit of hares, the Long Patrol, is called out to draw them off. At the forefront is the young hare Tammo, the lead sword in one of the most ferocious battles Redwall has ever faced—ready to fight to the death!

“[Jacques is] a masterful storyteller. . . . As in the other Redwall books, the combination of an absorbing plot, robust characterization, and detailed description make the novel a page-turner.”

5 out of 5 stars Another 5 star review for this awesome book!.......2007-09-30

Most of this book isn't very good. Well, I guess it's pretty good, the adventure is pretty action packed and it's fun to read about the travels of the rapscallion army. The coolest parts happen in the end, when the redwallers raise an army and engage the rapscallions in the biggest battle in redwall history! Things aren't looking up for them though, so they'd better hope the long patrol gets there soon! This is the book with the best battle, so if you like action and redwall, read this book!

3 out of 5 stars Well, at least it's short.......2007-08-22

If I was to put all of the Redwall books and sort them from creativity to overdone concept, the pile of creativity would be a pathetically small pile. Yes, I am an adult, who has outgrown Redwall, and even the hardcore Redwall fans are starting to outgrow Redwall. You can only handle so much of the same hack-n-slash plot of good and evil until it gets extremely repetitive. 'The Long Patrol' stands as probably one of the worst Redwall books I've endured, as is up there with the book 'Triss'.

Thank fate it's a small book for a Redwall novel, but even thinness cannot guarantee that it will be over faster. In Camp Tussock, where hares gather and 'train' or rest--that part was never clear--but what is clear is that all of the hares there go to Salamandastron to become soldiers of the Long Patrol. The map that is always included in every Redwall book, does a nice job of laying out the lay of the land, but please don't rely on it for the whole Redwall universe in general. It's not a Lord of the Rings map. It's not even a 'Warriors' map. It' a sloppy map whose geography is always changing from one book to the other. But about the book's plot.

The plot is pretty much simple. A rowdy hare named Tammo wants to join the Long Patrol, but his father does not think he has the material or even the experience. But Tammo's mother sends him off to his quest anyway, but not alone. His guide is a wisecrack, aloof squirrel named Russa Nodrey. Like in many Redwall journeys, their quest is not complete with danger along the way in which they overcome without batting an eye, until they actually get in trouble, and who else helps them but the Long Patrol. The badger lord, a Lady Rose Eyes Cregga, is gearing her hares to war against the Rapscallions, a so-called vicious horde led by a Greatrat, the cruel Damug Warfang.

You already know the outcome to this story before you even read it, and Tammo's struggles to grow up are alright, but when he actually goes to fight, he manages to kill quite a lot of Rapscallions...and he hasn't really trained. He's an inexperienced whelp who spends most of his time in the Long Patrol eating, eating, and eating. Like the rest of the hares. This is about 'The Long Patrol' right? Why did this fail in so many ways? Why wasn't there a more depth story about how the Long Patrol was actually formed, how the hares train, what makes a certain hare good enough to join? Because if a whelp like Tammo could be accepted in the ranks of the Patrol, then what's the point of Camp Tussock? So many plotholes that could've been filled if this story didn't take such a dramatic path. But since 'Loamhedge' wasn't really about Loamhedge--just a quest to the ruins, and 'The Legend of Luke' wasn't really about how Luke became a legend--more of Martin traveling to a wreck and we are filled with maybe 90 pages of Luke slaying a pirate. So 'The Long Patrol' wasn't really about The Long Patrol. Just about another ho-hum adventure of inexperienced fighters slaying a horde of badbeasts, but at least this story had more casualties than all of the Redwall books combined. That's what probably made it somewhat believable, but I still find it so hard to wrap around the idea that the horde of Rapscallions who you can clearly see had experience killing and fighting and actually learning how to wield a sword, could be slain so easily by a bunch of goodbeasts who think violence is bad, yet they all seem to possess the spirits of long-dead warriors and kill without so much as a single mark.

Irony, but of course, it's Redwall. And that's why this book deserves three stars. An average read for children, but obviously bland for adults who've read something far better elsewhere.

4 out of 5 stars Yet another great story from Jacques!.......2006-10-28

The Long Patrol was a typical Redwall book, displaying good vs. evil. This book centered on the famous Long Patrol and I really liked how the hares were portrayed and emphasized in this book. The only problem I had with The Long Patrol is that it wasn't as captivating as some of the other Redwall books. It seemed a little anti-climactic to me, but it was still a very good book. The best thing is that you don't have to be a little kid to enjoy this book (or any other Redwall book)!!

5 out of 5 stars One of his best........2006-10-07

First off i want to say I am a hard critic of the Redwall series because I believe they are becoming very repetitive. This book however is a breath of fresh air, differnt from all the rest. This is easily his best in my book, along with Martin the Warrior and The Bellmaker.

4 out of 5 stars The Long Patrol.......2006-06-01

A young hare named Tammo longs to be in the Long Patrol, a fierce fighting force that protects all of Salmandastron. However, he joins a small army of various animals that, led by Lady Cregga Rose Eyes, battles the legendary Rapscallion, in the name of defending Redwall Abbey. The ending is known, but a few twists and turns make this book worth every page.
This novel is a true representation of Brian Jacques' talent and imagination. Each animal has human characteristics, and readers will enjoy reading Badger-speak aloud. You will grow attached to Tammo and his friends as their goodhearted nature wins against selfishness, cruelty, and anger. People 12 and up will enjoy this book.
