5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource.......2007-06-25

My grandma originally owned a copy of this book and regularly noted sightings of interesting/rare species. I bought my own copy several years ago and it has proved quite useful. The most interesting example was a Java Sparrow sighted in Albuquerque, New Mexico. I couldn't find out what it was from searching around online, but looking in the back of this field guide, under foreign/introduced species, there it was.

5 out of 5 stars Quality Through and Through.......2005-10-11

I received this book as a gift and have used it constantly. I keep it on my window sill during the feeding season to identify the visiters to my feeder. The book's size and physical construction are excellent. As someone who is a novice it seems to be very comprehensive on the subject matter.

5 out of 5 stars The birder's bible.......2005-07-19

Even when I lived in the city, I liked to feed and watch the birds (mainly sparrows and pigeons). Now that we live up in the woods, we're in bird paradise. Using this Peterson Field Guide for "Eastern Birds" plus a good pair of binoculars for visual identifications, and the "Birding by Ear Eastern/Central" CDs (Richard K. Walton and Robert W. Lawson) I've identified 42 species of birds in just over a month, as a casual observer for the Michigan Breeding Bird Atlas II project.

I have other bird books, but it is Peterson's Field Guide that I use most frequently. Roger Tory Peterson's 'system' "is based on patternistic drawings with arrows that pinpoint the key field marks." You don't have to have the bird in hand in order to make an identification. In addition to 136 full-color plates of Eastern birds (male, female, and immature, or summer and winter plumage if they differ markedly), there are also 390 three-color maps (first introduced in the 1980 edition).

The maps are absolutely essential for an amateur like me. If I've narrowed down a blurry little gray bird to X and Y, and Y never makes it north of the Mason-Dixon Line, I can be pretty certain that the bird is X. Here's an actual example on the utility of the maps: I was trying to distinguish a trilling song that could either belong to the Swamp Sparrow, the Pine Warbler, or the Northern Junco. We do see Juncos at our feeders in the winter, but this is July and according to Peterson's map, the Juncos spend the summer north of here, mostly in Canada. So I've narrowed the trill down to the Swamp Sparrow or the Pine Warbler (actually I'm positive we've got both as I've made tentative visual identifications. It makes sense since we live in the Pine Barrens which is dotted with numerous swamps).

This book begins with a generalized introduction to identifying birds by shape, distinctive features and behavior. Physically, it is tightly bound and just the right size to slip into a backpack. The pages are glossy and 'relatively' waterproof if you wipe them quickly dry. There is even a 'life list' up front where you can check off the birds you have seen.

Don't go birding without it.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent beginner book for myself and my sister........1999-04-26

The Peterson field Guide to Eastern American Birds turned out to be the best birding book I've ever read. The book was well thought out and had the format that we needed in our suburban environment. The illustrations were concise and made identifying the birds extremely easy. We have a large population of Red-Winged Blackbirds and Mourning Doves, and its great to actually know what in the world we were looking at. It was great!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent guide to identification of birds........1998-05-13

This is the best of the field guides for the amature birder in my opinion. I purchased a guide that had actual photos of birds in their habitats, thinking it would be the best, but it definately was not as good or as easy to use as the Peterson field guide. If you are looking for a good all around field guide to keep near your binoculars, this one is my pick.

Book Description

In this 1996 Minnesota Book Award winner, Kent Nerburn draws the reader deep into the world of an Indian elder known only as Dan. It’s a world of Indian towns, white roadside cafes, and abandoned roads that swirl with the memories of the Ghost Dance and Sitting Bull. Readers meet vivid characters like Jumbo, a 400-pound mechanic, and Annie, an 80-year-old Lakota woman living in a log cabin. Threading through the book is the story of two men struggling to find a common voice. Neither Wolf nor Dog takes readers to the heart of the Native American experience. As the story unfolds, Dan speaks eloquently on the difference between land and property, the power of silence, and the selling of sacred ceremonies. This edition features a new introduction by the author. “This is a sobering, humbling, cleansing, loving book, one that every American should read.” — Yoga Journal

I can't really add anything more that hasn't already been said here. I just wanted to note that I too think this is a truly beautiful and very important book. I will carry it's message with me always.

5 out of 5 stars Keepers of the Fire.......2007-08-11

There are many books by do-gooders claiming to advance the wisdom and worldliness of Native American elders, but such books tend to glamorize the mythical past and/or simplify belief systems through the eyes of an amazed know-it-all white person. Another side-effect of the American media's obsession with Native American history is that it ignores the people's modern travails while focusing on how noble and pure everything was before the white man arrived. In this generally outstanding book, Kent Nerburn tries to avoid these weaknesses of white-generated coverage of Indians, and is mostly (though not always) successful.

This book is based on Nerburn's very rocky and uncomfortable friendship with an old Lakota man named Dan, who has led a long life of hardship on the reservation while striving to preserve his tribe's culture and customs. Refreshingly, Dan and Nerburn quickly dispense with historical myths and focus on where Indians stand in the present, with modern social problems combined with a need to understand a history far more painful and destructive than even the most sympathetic White Americans could imagine. Nerburn cannot always avoid sappy cultural ruminations and Dan is not always a likable person - but this all works to the book's advantage because both are revealed as complex humans with realistic strengths and weaknesses. The text occasionally gets uncomfortable as Dan delivers hard-hitting soliloquies on the continuing differences in the worldviews of the two peoples, but his opinions on matters of history and culture can be highly illuminating, as are Nerburn's struggles to understand without becoming the type of exploitative writer that he loathes. In the end, this is an extremely thought-provoking book and is essential for anyone interested in the culture of Native Americans - yesterday and today. [~doomsdayer520~]

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Book!.......2007-05-15

I am in the process of reading this book for the third time, and it still catches and holds me like very few other books can. If you are a reader interested in obtaining a dramatic and unadulterated view of America through the eyes of those who lived here prior to the European invasion, this book will give that to you. If you want a viewpoint beyond the white-written history books, in which battles won by Indians are "massacres" and battles won by whites are "victories," this is the book for you. After all, this was a country in which people and societies existed before Christopher Columbus showed up. I will warn you to be prepared; you will never view "American" history in the same manner again!

5 out of 5 stars A must read for America's Moral Compass.......2007-01-04

A fantastic, insight into a reality we share with native americans - Our country and lands, democracy, religion expanded just behind our destruction and sanctioned genocide of the American Indian. A gripping reminder that 150 years, in the collective memory of a people,is but a blink of an eye and that this struggle that most White Americans relegate to old hisotry is still well alive for Native Americans. This history, our own history, if held to contemporary american moral compass would be the cause of great outrage. As I read I found my patriotism humbled by they hyprocracy of our own history. And yet, the message of the book also faces the reality of the past and looks to a better future both for Native and White Americans. Simply a great read and great insight.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Read.......2006-11-21

This book was very deep and realistic. Few books have I read twice - this was one of them. I applaud the author - Nerburn. Reading this book was a gift. Thank you for taking on this project.

The story of the Sioux leader Crow Dog. It also talks about his family and previous generations, as well as children. He has a co-writer to get all this down. This isn't too bad, and a reasonably interesting account if you are interested in that sort of history and such books as Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee.

4 out of 5 stars Crow Dog Review.......2005-07-19

Interesting contemporary information (i.e. 1950s on). Tells of Indian's on-going plight in poverty, alcoholism, disease and lack of employment and the feelings this engenders in them. Valuable history of past Holy Men (and women) and their values.
Since I am very interested in Indian studies, both past and present, I enjoyed this book.

    5 out of 5 stars A rich book (17 year olds review).......2005-03-25

Crow Dog is one of the best Native American books I've ever read. It is culturally rich and speaks clearly on the injustices done to the Native Americans. It talks not only about the injustices of the past but also the future, like the siege of Wounded Knee. Also this is one of the richest stories which covers the legacy of the Crow Dogs.

One of the reasons this book is so affluent is its personal feel. The author, Leonard Crow Dog, can't write and so he spoke the entire book to an interpreter. This gives the entire book a slow but fluent feel which shadows the way many Native Americans talk, and so the book feels, sometimes, like a story. It makes you feel you are there in every event, and you are connected with the book in an uncanny way.

This book goes in-depth in the religious aspects of Native Americans. The Crow Dog family has always been in the root of Lakota medicine men, and they are responsible for the continued practice of, and the creation of some, Native American rituals. Leonard Crow Dog, the author, was the first to bring back the banded Ghost Dance since the death of his Great-Grand Father. It happened at one of the most important sites in Native American history, Wounded Knee. However, this wouldn't be the last time Leonard Crow Dog would become history at Wounded Knee.

The siege of Wounded Knee, which lasted seventy-two days, is one of the most intense events of the book. In that short time a band of Native Americans, from a rainbow of tribes, raised an independent nation, defended that nation, and fell to an enemy whom had, or maybe more has, no sense of a kept word. The siege of Wounded Knee wasn't actually a siege because the land was a part of a treaty which said it'd be Native American land, but naturally the white man didn't keep their word. It's been more than a decade since the last battle at Wounded Knee and it has been erased from most people's memory.

Crow Dog seems to be more than just a book about the legacy of the Crow Dog family. It seems to be a story about the prevailing struggle that Native American have every day to keep hold of their identity, and to keep hold of their sanity as they are encircled everyday by people how've stolen their home. The important part of the book is not the continued signing and break of agreements with Native Americans, but their spirit to stand resolved and stand with the divine father.

5 out of 5 stars History in the real meaning.......2001-10-19

Leonard Crow Dog tells his family history and the history of his nation with a love and power which can almost overpowers the reader.

5 out of 5 stars A superior study of Canis latrans.......2006-09-04

While it doesn't have quite the richness of Of Wolves and Men, Lopez's study on Canis lupus, this is nevertheless a superior study of the coyote. Ryden is an excellent author who is obviously both knowledgeable and passionate about her subjects, and God's Dog is fine evidence.

She goes into great detail regarding the natural history of Canis latrans, showing us that the coyote is a lot more social and less worthy of its bad reputation than is often thought. Coyotes are excellent parents, and often work together, though not in as tight a fashion as wolves, particularly when hunting. But Ryden shows us just how fascinating coyotes really are, far from being vermin or malignant lamb killers.

And, as I had hoped, she dispels those lamb-killing myths, showing that coyotes are opportunistic, but nowehre near as destructive as ranchers and hunters would have us believe. I cried as she described how humans have slaughtered coyotes out of prejudice, and how desperate coyotes in Yellowstone beg for food along the road.

While coyotes aren't endangered, and in fact hace expanded their historical territory in many areas, the persecution levied against them is unwarranted. God's Dog is an excellent study on the truth about coyotes, and I highly recommend it to anyone with any interest in nature whatsoever.

5 out of 5 stars Five Yaps uhm... stars for God's Dog!.......2002-03-08

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book for several reasons:
I like Hope Ryden's writing style. She flows very easily and the book just "reads well". Additionally, it's easy to see that she loves and appreciates this beatiful wild creature for what it is - a part of creation, like all other animals, that needs to be allowed to take its proper place in the grand scheme of things.
Lastly, I think that she makes an excellent point concerning the coincidence of coyotes and the grazing of public lands. Western ranchers do have the right to make as much money as they can, for that matter everybody has that same right, but it is ugly and disgusting to see people in our supposedly liberal -minded society to have such blind hatred for a natural predator that does what it does simply to survive.
The point in her story that saddens and disgusts me the most is that money is so, so important to my fellow -countrymen that they will stop at nothing, including killing and exterminating, just for a better income. I only hope that one day these same people will take a more comprehensive look at the world and see how beautiful and wondrous and perfect it already is. Coyotes and all.

4 out of 5 stars Breaking The Myth.......2001-02-07

The writings are scant on the coyote but this book answers many questions. First hand observations, natural history, the past history of man vs. coyote and photographs. There are many wonderful aspects to this book but what is most compelling is the way Hope Ryden shows the coyote as a resourceful, affectionate and intelligent creature rather than its familiar portrayal as a pest and killer. Much more than a field study this book is written from the heart.

This is an excellent book. Hope Ryden spent years in Yellowstone and other places watching and learning about coyotes first-hand. The book reflects this, full of the charm, interest, and conflicts of watching coyotes and getting involved in their world- which inevitably means getting involved in the human world, and its mixed emotions towards these canines, as well.

I have read and re-read this book nearly a hundred times. It makes you cry and laugh and cheer for the boy and his dog. Expertly written, you can visualize the early western frontier in all of it's glory. A must read for all animal lovers young and old.

When Sam and Little arliss go out hunting with out the knowledge of the raiding Indians. When Travis and lisbeth go out looking for them and find Sam and little arliss in a hole fighting with a bobcat. They forget about that until after the fight when the get captured by the Comanche. Will Savage Sam be able to save them read and find out.

This is a really good book. If you like Old Yeller and other adventure/dog stories (Sounder, Jim Kjlgaard books like Stormy and Big Red, ect.) this is a book for you. It has all the excitingness of Old Yeller, and is (nearly) as good.

      4 out of 5 stars 11 year old Sadie's Review.......2004-02-12

Savage Sam is an exciting and adventurous book. It takes place in the foothills of Texas in the past. Travis, the oldest son of 2, is working out in the field when he hears the Indians coming. Rounding up all the horses, Travis, his brother, Little Arliss, and another girl, Lisbeth, the Indians try to fight off Savage Sam, viciously fighting for his master's life. Finally the Indians kick him off and ride off into the prairie with their loot. Over hill and dale, river and stream, the horses run at a death pace. Their riders are clinging to their bare backs, and Savage Sam is chasing after them, though far away. Travis tries to devise a plan to escape but is rounded up again. Will Travis, Little Arliss, and Lisbeth ever escape or be rescued? Still, Savage Sam is following tirelessly. He is getting closer now, though! The Indians are getting a little riled up, too. They keep going faster and faster! In addition, Sam is getting closer and closer! This is a wonderful cook but a little violent. I recommend this book to older elementary (5th grade) and young adults. It is an action-packed book full of love and tragedy. You'll find out when you read this amazing book.

Mr.Popper is a house painter in Stillwater in the past. He is a very absentminded person, because he is always dreaming about far away countries. He wants to travel, but his family doesn't have enough money to do so. He receives a gift in the mail. It is a penguin! After having the penguin for a week, it gets sick. They take it to the vet. The veterinarian says it is lonely, so they get another penguin. The penguins have 10 babies. The Poppers are running out of money to buy food for themselves and the penguins. Will they figure out a way to feed 12 penguins, their family, and catch up on their taxes? Mr. Popper has an ice machine put in their basement for the penguins. They become more behind than before. Then one night Mr. Popper has an idea that will get their money back. I recommend this book to anyone who likes funny and educating books, because it is really funny. You also learn about penguins.

      Book Description

A brave boy goes into the hills and prays for help for his people. A rider on a magnificent animal comes to him and says: "This animal is called the Sacred Dog. He can do many things your dogs can do and also more...He is as the wind: gentle but sometimes frightening." The clouds close and suddenly one by one countless Sacred Dogs course down from the sky. And so the courage of one determined boy is rewarded by the Great Spirit: The horse, or Sacred Dog, is given to his tribe.

5 out of 5 stars Crazy Visions in the Sky.......2007-03-12

Man, I love anything with crazy visions in the sky - particularly the first chapter of the Biblical book Ezekiel - but the vision in this book is a neat thing to read about too. I just don't get why the buffalo was referenced at the end. Must be a Native American custom to end all stories with some mentioning of a buffalo.

I'm sorry to say I still like non-sacred dogs more than sacred dogs, but I have a very good reason for doing so. Sacred dogs are much more expensive.

      5 out of 5 stars Great.......2006-03-15

I loved this book when I was little, and I still love it now. It's great to see that it's still around. It's a wonderful story with even better illustrations for children and adults.

5 out of 5 stars Beautifully illustrated Native American tale........1999-08-04

Children and adults will enjoy the colorful illustrations and tale of how the Native Americans acquired the horse. Lovely!

5 out of 5 stars This Book Saved My Butt.......2007-07-04

It was so great to be able to reach over, knowing I'd be running out of steam in X amount of hours, figure where I'd be then, and find a motel in this book, call ahead and book.

It actually does have B&B's and some park info, so I'm not sure what the other reviewer was referring to. I am recommending it to many other dog-owning friends of mine. Just put in 10,000 miles and it really was a lifesaver.

      5 out of 5 stars Good Book.......2007-03-09

Books has lots of helpful information, things that you wouldn't get unless you were really there, such as how one of the beaches in california tried to band dogs a few years ago because of the poop, so we must keep it clean or they will try to close it again. I always clean up after my dog but if I saw some I would probably clean it up. Also good section on traveling with you dogs. And a couple great pictures. Good overall helpful book!

2 out of 5 stars Not the best dog travel guide out there.......2007-01-20

I would not particularly recommend this book. It's organized by topic, with dog-friendly parks and beaches, and a long lodgings directory. The lodgings are heavy on chain motels, and lacked listings for some fairly large towns.
I will probably use this book mainly to make sure I'm not missing lodging options. The one feature I liked was a listing by interstate exit of dog-friendly lodgings. But, I don't travel much by interstate; I'm more interested in finding detailed lodgings in tourist-oriented destinations.
Dog-Friendly New England, which I've also reviewed, for example, is a far better guidebook for people who just want a weekend getaway.

1 out of 5 stars Not a good travel with your dog guide.......2006-06-27

Having bought this guide book based upon the use of the dogfriendly.com website (which is a useful tool) - instead of buying the updated AAA guide for dogs - this book has mainly listings of chain hotels -for example Motel 6 and Red Roof Inns - it doesn't have anything much on national parks, camping or state parks - nor does it list dog accepting Bed and breakfasts (if you are solely going on highways this guide is okay - but if you venture off like I do - this guide is not handy) - in my opinion the AAA guide is the better one to buy - it still lacks certain things but this guide needs a much better edit before I would ever buy it again.

      Book Description

This title was among the winners of the 2006 Skipping Stones Honor Awards for Multicultural & International Awareness Books. Keeping Heart on Pine Ridge is an intimate look at contemporary life with the Lakota people on Pine Ridge Indian Rerservation, near the Black Hills in South Dakota. Insightful stories of compassion, despair, humor, and spiritual growth are drawn from two years of daily life in a strong and tormented community. Firsthand accounts of sundances, commodity foods, sweat lodges, drunken driving, and the Sacred provide the fabric through which Glover weaves his incisive wit and wisdom on the social and political forces that have challenged his people and made them stronger.

5 out of 5 stars Keeping Heart On Pine Ridge:Family Ties, Warrior Culture, Commodity Foods, Rez Dogs and the Sacred.......2005-11-28

A group from our church has gone to Pine Ridge on Mission trips for the past three years and we have gotten to know quite a few people there. We always seem to have gained more than we have given during our week stay. This book tells it how it is for much of the population on the Pine Ridge Reservation. It is a very helpful book for the leaders of our Mission to share with others that are joining us. We love the people there. They focus on what really matters in life and brings us back to where we all need to live. Most of us are so far removed from nature, family, giving our all to each other. This book shows us how and points out how far removed we are. It really brings questions to the way that I am living my life. It points out just how differently I need to live to become apart of life as Jesus would want me to live it.
Thank you, Vic Glover. And thank you to our Native brothers and sisters.

      5 out of 5 stars Keeping Heart.......2005-02-01

This is a beautiful collection of short stories and is a real life account of living on in Indian reservation in todays modern times.
Vic Glover has an amazing talent and style of writing that 'just takes you right there'.
With much humour and sadness, Vic takes you on a journey, that whets the appetite, always leaving you wanting to read more.
This is a great read, I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Telling it like it is.......2004-12-23

A moving glimpse into the everyday lives of the people that live on Pine Ridge. The blending of Lakota spirituality into the challenges of life in an impoverished society is outstanding!

5 out of 5 stars Keeping Heart on Pine Ridge.......2004-12-12

A must read for anyone interested in what life on a western Rez is really about. BroVic captures the humor and pathos of daily life in a marvelously clear, straightforward way that simutaneously makes you wish you were there to share in it and glad that you're not.

5 out of 5 stars Real Life Moments.......2004-12-11

I lived on a rez for 7 years, but I could never convey to others the texture of living there. Vic Glover can. This is a beautiful bouquet of real life vignettes, interwoven and told with an honest voice. Vic writes with nothing to hide, and that makes these stories so rich and visceral.

And it's damn cheap, like me. Perfect for Christmas presents. I'm gonna order some more copies.
