Awesome ! Awesome ! book . .......2005-08-10
This is a really awesome book. In my opinion, nobody to date has explained pointers better than Mr. Daconta. By the time I finished reading the book and doing the exercises, I was really thinking out "pointers" and how they were being represented inside the machine, which is what makes this book great.
Pointers being a difficult topic, I have referenced scores of sources, but have come away disappointed. The author with his unique explaining style (using diagrams and "paper computer" paradigm) brings out the essence, power and the pitfalls of pointers, references and memory management.
Remove thy veil and immerse yourself in the land of pointers.......2004-06-06
Pointers are by far the most important, and most difficult aspects of C/C++. Most books, however, gloss over the subject and leave the reader desiring more. Daconta understood this and addressed many of the questions in this book.
You'll get a bet understanding of the benefits and consequences of passing by reference vs. passing by value, and vis-a-vis.
Now for the gripe: This book is slightly dated, and is really just a C++ version of his original C book. Therefore, you're going to find some questionable code here and there.
Excellent explanations covered..which are hard to find..........2002-07-04
Since I am a programmer and mainly built applications using visual basic, I always had an urge to master c++ due to the power of this language, but pointers were the only hurdle for me to overcome this goal. I always had bad times understanding MFC offered classes and the way whole infrastructure work, coz they play with pointers alot..and after all learning C++ and coding in c++ is not difficult without pointers but the fact is, if someone really wanna code in C++ they better do it efficiently other wise no need to switch, you should remain on ur currently practice language..This book not only taught me what pointers are but really made my mind think and work like a compiler..I really appreciate the author Micheal C Daconta and his team of putting such a masterpiece into existance, with out this book I simply believe one cannot solve the mystery of pointers coz no other stuff is available that is comparable to this book..
once again I deeply thank the author and his team for their hard work, for simplifing the true power of c++

This is a great discussion on pointers--not too deep though.......2000-11-07
If you want a simple resource that encapsulates what pointers are and how they are used, this is an excellent resource. If you are looking for something deep and intricate, this is not your resource. This book is extremely easy to read and understand, and you can be introduced to every kind of pointer you want to know about by reading this book. I gave it 4 stars because I thought Daconta's attempt to talk in average programmer speak went a little too far. He could have been a little more formal. Regardless, I think it's a worthy buy.
This is one awesome book!.......2000-08-22
While I understood pointers I always felt a little uncomfortable with them - this book has made things crystal clear. It has helped me to understand pointer and memory management concepts and pitfalls and has made me a much better programmer. This is NOT the book for you if you are trying to learn C++ or are at a beginner level - this is for the intermediate to heavy C++ programmer who wants to improve his/her coding skills and depth of knowledge.
Book Description
Although this aristocratic animal is an all-purpose field dog, its high intelligence makes it ideal as a watchdog, and its good nature makes it a companionable family pet. Like all dogs bred for the hunt, this animal should have plenty of exercise. This manual offers sound advice on all aspects of care for German Shorthaired Pointers, and is handsomely illustrated with color photos.

Complete and Accurate.......2007-01-09
As a breeder of German Shorthaired Pointers at [....], I give this book with each puppy sold. Allot of other books, even some with GSP in their title are warmed over generic puppy books. This book is specific to my breed and full of valuable information for the beginner and the experienced GSP owner.
a must have for a anyone considering a German Shorthair.......2003-06-11
This book is an excellent, concise introduction to anyone even remotely considering getting one of these dogs. It covers everything from how to pick a puppy, deciding if these are the right type of dog for you and how to find this out, diseases and ailments that these dogs are prone to, basic puppy and dog training methods, housetraining, and basic hunting methods. Along with a complete description of the accepted breed standard and competitions available for your dog. Though this should not be the only book a new GSP owner should get, it is recommended as the first one to get when deciding.
Good Jumping off Point.......2001-12-22
This book touches all the bases. Excellent for the new dog owner. Make no mistake, it is NOT the end of ones personal gsp library, unless using the dog as "just" a pet. I would recommend others as well. This book does just what it is intended to, introduce the GSP owner with brief history and insight into his/her new K9 friend. For the price you can't beat it.
Not worth the box it is shipped in........2001-01-08
This is a generic "how to feed your puppy" book with a couple of pictures of GSP's and one extra chapter devoted to the breed. If you don't already know the information contained in the book, you have never owned a dog in your life. Spend the extra cash on "New Complete GSP's" or "GSP's Today"
Great to teach your German short haired pointer to hunt!.......1999-01-30
I bought this book a few weeks ago and ever since I started reading it my pointer has made extreme progress I would recomend this book to any one looking to train there pointer.

More than just pointers.......2007-08-12
I'm still working through the book but was pleased to FINALLY find an author whose style is clear without being boring. An enjoyable book which has already cleared up some confusion I had before. I have a couple of comments for other reviewers, though:
(1) The title is a play on words. It doesn't mean that the book is supposed to be
entirely about pointers, as a couple of reviewers seemed to think. I think its a great title! (2) The book IS expensive, probably because it is widely used as a textbook. Textbook publishers have been gouging students for years, and in this case it affects more than just university students. (I'm a prof myself.)
Or drive a truck.......2007-07-27
When programming in C you must use, love and own pointers. Look at the function templates for the standard C lib. What do these functions return? POINTERS! If you don't want to learn pointers, or think about solving problems using pointers, then please go drive a truck or program in Basic or some other half-wit language. C will frustrate you to tears if you insist on using subscripts. It's not how the language approaches problems.
I am having to use C# right now and want to gag. Any language that claims to be "C" but doesn't support pointers is an oxymoron. Have a glass of dry water while you try to swallowing that load of bull. Thanks MicroSlop for ruining two languages, Basic (who cares) and C, the language that built the computer revolution (punishable by death in a better world). Arrrghhh. Thanks Ken for a great book for the strong and the brave amongst us.
Great book, but pricy.......2006-09-01
As others have noted, this book is exremely expensive. I was lucky enough to get a used copy for about half the retail price here on Amazon and I intend to keep it. I haven't read every book on C, so I may be ambitious to say this, but this is the best explanation of pointers I've read to date. The author doesn't assume anything and this is helpful when learning something as tricky as pointers for those new to the concept. The author explains concepts with clarity while being concise. I don't develop software for a living, but need to write the occasional program here and there. I thought this book accurately described the methodology of writing the most compact, yet readable code, for the problems presented. I'd reccommend this book despite the price. Those new to the C programming language won't be disappointed.
I would point you to this book :D.......2006-05-17
This book is an excellent book on C for people who have previous programming experience. Although the title might be a little deceiving - does not cover just pointers - the author does dedicate the better part of the book discussing. The book has many excellent explanations that are not covered in books that I have read such as a whole chapter pertaining to lists (linked lists, and binary trees) using pointers. The main disadvantage is that the examples in the book are incomplete, thus you are not able to type them in and see the results. Beyond that disadvantage the book is great and offers answers to all the questions (on the website) which is something that I felt to be lacking on many books that I have read so far.
GREAT book on C.......2005-03-19
I have found this book to be an invaluable recourse. In a word its GREAT!!!

--Stephen Shortell, Blue Cross of California Distinguished Professor of Health Policy and Management, University of California, Berkeley
Customer Reviews:
Board Work offers a simple yet powerful model for governance.......1999-08-31
Board Work is as clear and practical a work on governance as I've ever read. I commend it to new and experienced board members, to the chairs of governance committees charged with board improvement, and to the executives who staff boards.
As a trustee and governance consultant, I know these authors and have heard them speak -- and it was a pleasure to see how well the book transfers their years of experience into print.
The book works so well because it is built on a straight-forward model that the authors carry throughout every chapter. The model suggests that healthcare boards (and most other boards, for that matter) have five central roles: defining organizational ends, ensuring management performance; overseeing financial performance; overseeing quality; and providing for the board's own structure, composition and effectiveness. Boards carry out these roles in three ways: by making policies, making decisions, and overseeing performance. One of the book's strongest components is explaining how - in order to define organizational ends - a board identifies the organization's stakeholders and their expectations. Few boards do this at all, much less do it well.
Board Work joins books by John Carver, William Bowen, Cyril Houle and Richard Chaitt as an exceptional contribution to the emerging body of pragmatic governance literature.
I recommend it highly.
Outstanding! Great for all Boards!.......1999-07-06
Outstanding! This book is great - not only for health care organizations, but boards at all levels - small business, corporate, even community and homeowner associations. It is practical and resourceful, providing me with an action list to make my board interactions more effective.
An excellent book, very useful to boards of health care orga.......1999-05-19
An excellent source for those who are interested in the governance of health care organizations. Relations of staff and CEO to boards are critical to the effective functioning of health organizations. This book provides the tools to more effectively understand how to harness and lead the power of boards to the best advantage of the organization. Pointer and Orlikoff are two of the best (actually unique) individuals in this important area. They have used the knowledge acquired through work with a large number of organizations to help understand how they work and how to work with them. Must reading for CEOs, board members and those who interact with boards.
This book is an excellent practical guide to governance........1999-05-12
This book provides excellent tools and guidleines to take governance into the 21st century. Dennis Pointer and James Orlikoff provide fresh ideas and insights into how boards can effectively and successfully enhance their organizations. This book should be read by every health care board who wants to make a difference in their organization.

Book Description
C++ is the language of choice for thousands of applications and millions of lines of code. With C++/CLI, developers can integrate existing C++ code into the .NET platform without rewriting their applications. This book explores the C++/CLI syntax, teaches how to mix native C++ and managed .NET code, and shows how to integrate C++ with Windows Forms, WPF (Avalon), and WCF (Indigo).
Imagine taking a C++-based program you've been using for a decade and giving it a snazzy new interface using Windows Presentation Foundation. How about making your old business applications talk to your new ones using Windows Communication Foundation. C++/CLI makes this--and more--possible. C++/CLI in Action shows you how to bridge the gap between your existing C++ code and the .NET platform. C++/CLI in Action will help you if:
You're hesitant to migrate to .NET because it means rewriting code in C# or VB.
You have significant C++ expertise that you want to leverage in the .NET.
You only need to use pieces of the .NET framework, such as Windows Forms or web services.
There's no fluff here. Designed for readers who already know C++, this book starts by teaching the unique aspects of the C++/CLI language. After a quick tour through the basics, readers work through examples of integrating standard C++ into the .NET-based applications and building programs that mix C++ and .NET code for maximum performance and efficiency.

Excellent book.......2007-05-14
Nishant did an excellent job with this book. The only complaint is that he could have made it bigger.
He separates himself from the rest. The difference is his book covers:
1. MFC/Managed C++ integration. Excellent chapter.
He shows how to add any Managed class to either
an MFC Dialog or MFC View. My favorite chapters are
five and six.
2. Templates/Generic mixing. Even covers managed template
inheritance.
3. Advanced event covering with C++. I have worked with C++/C#
for years, and I didn't know this about events. Very good.
4. Avalon integration. This is somewhat lacking, but it is still
very good coverage.
I would recommend this book to anybody.

German Shorthaired Pointers Today.......2004-12-25
Great Book! This is what you should know, at the very least, before you go out to buy a German Shorthaired Pup. If your breeder isn't raising the litter this way look elsewhere. This breed is one of the smartest types of dog around. BUT you have to start them early and you can not slack up on them. If you follow the guides in this book it is easy, but Please give your dog these needed encouragements to be "ALL THAT HE CAN BE" If you were to follow this book to the letter both you and your dog will be winners.

Basic Grounding and Reference Material.......2000-05-29
This book is informative for the novice GSP owner and also a useful reference book for owners who show and work. Valuable breed line information in one book.
Okay for a beginner who needs basic info regarding training........1999-04-08
Unfortunately, the paper is of a much higher quality than the information or organization of the book. There is very little information regarding American field trials. The scant info included is primarily about a few midwestern GSP trainers and owners. There is no information regarding NAVHDA field trials. The training book published by NAVHDA is a much better more systematic guide to training a verstile hunting dog such as the GSP.
Most of the info on kennels and breeders is focused on show kennels and show dogs. For those readers interested in history of the GSP and current trends in breeding in a much more comprehensive manner, I recommend Der Deutsch-Kurzhaar. It costs 3 times as much but is 20 times better.
If you don't hunt with your GSP, don't read this book........1997-05-18
I had to give this book a low score, but I admit Mr. Layton didn't write it for me. If you are planning to hunt, try, and show your GSP, then this is the book for you. But if you are like me, and you want a dog as a loving family member, active participant in outdoor events; if you could care less about the dog's lineage (as long as he is healthy); and if you think the AKC and FCI are just a bit nuts for telling you your dog is no good because he is a few centemeters too short, don't read this book. Admittedly, most GSP owners are professional handlers and hunters. But there are a lot of us out there, too. And we don't appreciate Mr. Layton's snide remarks about those who hold the quite reasonable belief that it is possible to enjoy nature without murdering it.
This book presents a strange mix. It is at once too detailed and too simple. For example, the section on breeding bitches is excellently detailed, but I doubt the average reader would use this book as a guide in that regard. By contrast, the sections on puppy and field training are woefully inadequate, and the only way to train a dog according to this book would be to select a previously trained dog to work with, which defeats the purpose. Mr. Layton assumes too much of his readers. Somehow, he goes from his excellent section on birth to a similarly excellent section on advanced retrieval work. But how we got our week-old puppy to that advanced state of training seems to have been left on the editing-room floor.
I also did not enjoy Mr. Layton's superscilious atttitude toward raising dogs. Though he is correct that the safest bet in purchasing a dog is to buy a puppy from a reputable breeder, those of us who rescue adult GSPs from the pound (and certain euthanasia) and work patiently with them, knowing that they will probably never achieve their puppy potential, deserve the accolades (not the derision) of our fellow dog owners.
In sum, if this is the only book you will ever buy for your GSP, find something else. If you are a hunter or champion breeder, this may be the book for you. If you are training your dog independently, and want this book only as a supplement, enjoy it. But to anyone who can't understand why some humans get a thrill out shooting defenseless creatures for sport, steer clear--this book will only upset you.

This is an excellent book it has helped me learn alot about the GSP. Vendor was great recevied my book a mere 4 days after ordering and I live overseas.
Great Read For First Time GSP Owners.......2005-02-07
The author, Nancy Campbell, captures the true essence of the German Shorthair Pointer, their versatility, their personality, etc. As a result, folks considering adoption or ownership will discover what they need to know before they make a commitment to the breed.
Becoming breed knowledgeable is extremely important so that the rate for abandonment and shelter turn-ins can lessen over time. Nancy arms the reader with more than enough information to make an educated decision "about everything GSP"! I personally recommended this book to several people over the last year and they have all reported that this book was a valuable tool in their decision making process!
Campbell's "GSP, Owner's Guide a Hit.......2002-01-07
Nancy Campbell captures the true essence of the breed in her personal, up-close approach. Her descriptions of what makes the GSP special, I found are accurate and heart warming. Not only is the book informative and extremely well organized, it is also fun reading! I especially liked some of the training techniques. I have tried them and they work.
Great Book for anyone thinking of owning a GSP or adopting.......2001-09-07
We love our adopted shelter GSP dog and when were thinking of one, we bought this invaluable book. Excellent information, characterization of the breed and written with humor. This book is for current owners and potential owners. We love our dog and use this book as a reference when we have questions on him. This book accurately described his temperant, needs and how to care for him.
A great starter's guide.......2001-06-06
This book is intended for those considering the breed, and it is a wonderful and funny introduction. It is also a fine book for those who have owned GSPs before to enjoy and reflect on their experience with the breed. A must for a person considering getting the breed for the first time. It is in depth about the breed history, standard, and breed character. Not a training guide, but that is not its apparent purpose. Read this one BEFORE you get a GSP.

Wonderful book with great recipes and techniques!.......2004-01-21
My husband and I aren't diabetic, but we both need to lose weight. We didn't have much success with any of the brand-name diets, so we went to a registered dietician who put us on a diabetic exchange diet. Initially we had a hard time sticking to it, because it was hard to figure out ways to make food tasty with limited fat and starch intake, not to mention trying to figure out correct portion sizes to fit our exchanges.
This book, however, is making it much easier. I'm learning how to make subsitutions so food tastes good but is still healthy and within our dietary limits. The food may not always be as full-flavored as our favorite old fat-laden recipes, but there are recipes my husband is actually requesting, instead of wishing he could have his favorite fast food or Thai food!
The intro to the book has tips on portion sizes and subsitutionswhich are helpful in knowing what to eat and how much of it. Couple this information with a good kitchen scale, and you'll find that you'll be preparing meals you're actually looking forward to eating!
Mr. Food's Quick & Easy Diabetic Cooking.......2003-01-08
Brief and to the point, this book was just WONDERFUL. Mr. Food's TV recipes always seem so deliciously decedant. This book is also delicious ... but very far from decadent! Loved it!
Simple, quick.......2002-04-12
While his little show makes me want to jump out a window, his cookbook lives up to its name. Quick and easy, and the recipes actually work, unlike with many other cookbooks where the recipes do not turn out. I give it 4 out of 5 stars because the book lives up to its name and is affordable.

Before I started on a diabetic diet I had a few of Mr. Food's other recipe books. I was so excited to find out he, Art Ginsburg, had written a recipe book for those with diabetes. My diabetic diet had become so boring and plain until I received this book from Amazon.com. Now I look forward to planning my next meal.
The Double Chocolate Brownies were a hit with an Irish club I

Comments to One Star Review.......2001-08-29
THE TRUTH ABOUT SUGAR As a Registered Dietitian, for more than 20 years, and Certified Diabetes Educator, for over 10 years, I was so distressed by reviewer comments regarding sugar in the diabetic diet, that I am taking time to respond. Since 1994 dietitians and educators working with people with diabetes have been trying to get the truth out about sucrose (sugar). Sugar is NOT a forbidden food for people with diabetes. Scientific evidence from more than a dozen studies has shown that the use of sugar does impair blood glucose control in people with type 1 or type 2 diabetes. Sugar and foods containing sugar must be substituted for other carbohydrates, gram for gram, and not simply added to the diabetes meal plan. In making such substitutions, the nutrient content of concentrated sweets and sucrose-containing foods, as well as the presence of other nutrients frequently ingested with sucrose, such as fat, must be considered. The bottom line for people with diabetes is to check the total carbohydrate in a recipe or on a food label and work that into their diabetes meal plan. Because there are individual variations in blood glucose response, self-monitoring is an important part of diabetes control.
