Dolphin lovers will love this!.......2003-06-14
I'm a 14 year old girl, and I thoroughly enjoyed this book! I love dolphins, and I wanted to learn more about them without being fed a bunch of information like a textbook. Instead, Dolphin Chronicles presents lots of information in textbook form. By the time you get to the end, you'll have a much greater understanding of dolphin training, their lifestyles in captivity and in the wild, and the life of a person working with dolphins without ever realizing you were even learning anything! It's great that this book can be so easy to read and comprehend with so much info packed inside. I totally recommend it to anyone who would like to understand the dolphin world better!
If you're really interested in dolphins, this is the book..........2000-01-26
the best book on dolphins I've read. Deals not only with science, but the emotional aspect of working with dolphins. A must read if interested in the field....
This is the best book I've EVER read!.......1999-01-22
Carol Howard has a unique talent and way of combining love, compassion, sorrow, humor, and a vast amount of knowledge in 294 pages. Never have I learned so much about a book as I did from Dolphin Chronicles. My ultimate dream is to study these strange and magnificent creatures of the sea, as well as whales. I received Dolphin Chronicles as a Christmas gift from my Grandparents, and I must say that it was my favorite gift of all! In the past, I have read about 5 or 6 books about Cetaceans (by Jacques-Yves Cousteau and other authors) and have gotton extremely bored halfway through the material, simply because it was so dry and was lacking the compassion Carol so rightly illustrates! I would recommend this book to anyone. I am planning on researching more of Carol Howard's work wherever it may be. If anyone can clue me in as to the fastest and cheapest ways of finding it, Please feel free to e-mail me your information. Thank you. :-) P.S. If Carol Howard or anyone who knows Mrs. Howard reads this review, I would like to know her e-mail address if possible to personally thank her for producing such a wonderful and moving book. Thanks for your cooperation. --"May your life be like the Dolphin, calm and peaceful waters."
The best first hand account I have ever read!.......1998-12-25
This is the best first hand experience I have ever read on dolphins! I do marine mammal rescues and have a deep love and respect for dolphins and our oceans. Carol Howard's experience is one that I feel I have experienced first hand. Excellent writing. It helps us realize the need to know more about dolphins and their brilliance but also to respect their need to be free in our oceans.
The best book I've read on dolphins in a LONG time!!.......1997-01-23
Dolphin Chronicles is a wonderful story about Carol J. Howard's adventure with dolphins. Her book was so well-written that I felt like I was actually participating in her events. I am only thirteen years old but it the best book I have read in my life. I now want to be a marine biologist and dedicate my life to researching and caring for dolphins. Thank you Carol for writing such a wonderful book
Book Description
In a last-ditch stab at fortune and glory, middle-aged adventurer Bill Conan enters a 30,000-mile single-handed round-the-world race. This ultimate test of skill, strength, and endurance leads him across the treacherous Atlantic Ocean's vast expanse, where a sudden change in wind throws him off balance and sends him overboard. Alone in the still, open sea, he struggles to keep from drowning, knowing it is a fight that he will eventually lose… But Conan has stumbled into the migratory path of a bottle-nosed dolphin named Aka and his tribe. In an exhilarating encounter, he senses Conan's plight, communicates with him, and works to keep him afloat and alive. A stirring adventure tale, Aka depicts the ancient history of dolphins, their extraordinary traits and abilities, and their eternal friendship with humans.

A great tale by a remarkable man.......1999-12-03
The late Tristan Jones was, in real life, a solo-sailor of small boats; one of those intrepid iconoclasts who look back at the rest of us from the brink with a sardonic grin as if asking how we can stand living in the safety of the herd.
Aka is Jones's novel of a small-boat sailor who agrees to enter a solo race around the world, replacing his friend who was killed in a highway accident. In a parallel story, Aka and his school of bottle-nose dolphin follow their customary itinerary in their annual migration to the calving ground at St. Paul's Rocks in the equatorial mid-Atlantic, which, according to Tristan Jones, is what is left of the lost continent of Atlantis, formerly populated by the dolphins' great friends, the Sea Kings.
Jones's hero, Conan, is a competent sailor and the details of life at sea on a small boat are absolutely authentic. Still, he manages to go overboard in mid-ocean and watch his boat nonchalantly sail off without him--
"...and he wept like a lone child lost in the dark, appalling reaches of infinity."
Tristan Jones has sailed the Atlantic eighteen times, nine times alone. Of his book, Ice, Sterling Hayden, who has himself washed more salt out of his sea-boot socks than most of us have sailed over, says, "What an epic book written by such a glorious man..."
For those of us who are drawn to the sea a story like this, written by a small boat sailor, is ambrosia, whether the author writes well or not. Tristan Jones writes very well. He was awarded first prize for the most distinguished book of 1979-80 by the Welsh Arts Society. he is also a member of the Explorer's Club and has sailed the highest and lowest latitudes on earth (he has sailed farther north than any other man.)
About Aka, Jones says: "If my tale can bring to people ashore a little of the joy, a little of the elation and wonder, and even a mite of the pain and suffering that voyagers and other mammals know at sea, then any carping of pierhead critics will be to this book as the squeaks of an un-oiled sheet-block are to a vessel safely at anchor in her own quiet haven."
Amen!

Big brains in large bodies.......2001-02-14
The collaborators who put this book together are dedicated scientists with years of experience in the field. I admire their work. But I find on thing missing from the discussion of brain versus body size. They establish ratios of brain to body size and declare this is one method of measuring the intelligence of the animal, i.e. the larger the brain is in relationship to the body, the smarter the animal is. But they do not explain why a large body needs a large brain. After all, whale sharks of the same size as sperm whales have brains smaller than your fist while the sperm whale brain is six times larger than the human brain. Perhaps it is the large brain which requires the large body. The laws of physics would prohibit a brain developing in a very small body. Necks breaking and cortical sheering would be a problem.
Excellent Information.......2001-01-15
I have read through this book while doing some research on dolphins and marine mammal conservation and must say that this has some information that I could find nowhere else. This book hits on such a large variety of information relating to dolphin biology and conservation that I cannot believe that they fit it all into one book.
Samantha is great.......2000-08-21
Good to see Samantha successful in life. I knew her back when she was a struggling student at Eckerd College.

Good bedtime story........2006-07-09
This is my 2 1/2 year-old's favorite book. She requests I read it to her almost every night at bedtime, and she is usually out by the last page. It has great illustrations, a pleasing story, and concludes with the dolphins sleeping at the end of the day. The story begins with the birth of a dolphin and the assistance of a "nanny" who is the mother's best friend. They hunt for fish and even have an encounter with a shark, but the "Little Dolphin" is whisked away to safety by his mother and nanny. My daughter's only question about the storyline is "where's the daddy", to which I tell her the daddy is hunting fish.
Nicely written, Kid-friendly Dolphin story.......2000-04-14
This is a story about a newborn Bottleneck dolphin's first day in the ocean. It is nicely written and illustrated but the kid friendly story line takes away slightly from the factual information. Even so, both my children (2 year-old and 4 year-old) and I really enjoy this book and others in this "Smithsonian Ocean Series" especially Manatee Winter.

Book Description
Using their unique sonar, dolphins have the capability of working in dark, murky water. The United States Navy trains dolphins for military tasks such as patrolling dock areas for enemy swimmers, and for locating undersea exploding mines.
Customer Reviews:
about the book.......2003-05-06
Grade 4-6-In Dogs, Presnall discusses the importance of these animals, what attributes are looked for in selecting canines to train, training, and a guide dog in action. Her current sources, excerpts from interviews, and generally well-chosen photographs add interest to the adequate text. One photograph shows hot dogs suspended by strings as the dog-in-training focuses on the task rather than the tasty treat. In Dolphins the author covers the use of these animals for military purposes, and their unique role in assisting the Navy in the rescue of personnel, identification of enemy swimmers, and detection of bombs and mines. She discusses the use of various training methods. There is no mention of the animal-rights issue of using dolphins in the naval service. However, given the lack of material on this topic her resource lists will be valuable. In both titles, many of the black-and-white and full-color photographs selected from photo archives enliven the texts, but others lack clarity and a number are purely decorative. Nonetheless, these titles will be of interest to readers eager to know more about the world of animals at work.
Book Description
The Dolphins of Hilton Head introduces readers to the unique population of bottlenose dolphins that inhabits the warm water and brackish salt marshes of South Carolina's inland coastal waterways. Drawing on years of research in Hilton Head and the latest discoveries of scientists throughout the world, Cara Gubbins describes this atypical habitat and explains how the distinctive behaviors of Hilton Head dolphins distinguish them from other populations. She identifies their particular behavior patterns, vocalizations, behavioral ecology, and local traditions. Gubbins also offers practical suggestions on how best to view and understand these animals while visiting the island.
Framing her study with a general overview of dolphins and their habits, Gubbins explores the natural history, ecology, and evolution of free-ranging Atlantic bottlenose dolphins in South Carolina. She compares this population with others throughout the world to reveal the South Carolina dolphins' innovative foraging techniques, novel social system, and unconventional habitat use patterns. Gubbins debunks widely held myths about the animals, addresses conservation issues that will affect their future in South Carolina waters, and discusses environmental problems that threaten them worldwide.
While Gubbins looks specifically at the dolphins of Hilton Head, her guide helps readers understand these animals throughout the world. She offers advice not only for spotting dolphins but also for interpreting such specific behaviors as feeding, socializing, resting, traveling, and communication.

great photos, good print quality and basic info for kids.......2000-07-18
Although this book has only 28 pages it is an interesting book for kids about dolphins. The text is in large letter which makes it easier to read for children who want to read themselfs or grandmothers/grandfathers :) who might have to read it for them. Being a wildlife photographer myself I have to admit that the photos are very good and the quality of the print is of equal level. So even if you're not a kid any more and just like dolphins it's well worth the money. Of course this is not a comprehensive book on dolphins but it was never meant to be.

ASIN: 0896585263 |
Book Description
Intelligent, graceful and approachable, dolphins have long been among the worlds favorite sea creatures. Of all the dolphin species, the bottlenose is best known and loved. But bottlenose dolphins are more than television stars and aquarium performers. In "Bottlenose Dolphins" readers will voyage under the sea with researchers Paul Thompson and Ben Wilson, who are studying dolphins off the coast of Scotland. The authors explain the bottlenose dolphins oceanic habitat and range, and delve into their complex social relationships. They also share their concerns for the future of these beloved seafarers and suggest steps to protect them. Stunning color photographs accompany their insights.

Learn about the bottlenose dolphin........2000-07-20
Unlike so many other books about dolphins this book focuses only on the bottlenose dolphin. It gives the reader a basic idea of the life of this species and includes a lot of interesting facts about them. The authors are not writing down second hand info but are both researching these dolphins off the coast of Scottland. Instead of having school book like anatomical drawings and graphs this book remids me more like talking to a dolphin expert while going on a boat watching them in the sea.
I saw this book at a friend and liked the photos so much that I knew I needed it for my collection, too. Being a wildlife photographer (with a special focus on dolphins) I always enjoy looking at as good photos of dolphins as found in this book. This book makes an excelent gift for any dolphin fan.
Publisher Synopsis.......1999-01-08
One look at researcher Paul Thompson's book and it's easy to see why bottlenose dolphins continue to be the world's favorite aquarium animal. Thompson's incredible knowledge coupled with lively photographs of bottlenose dolphins effortlessly flying from the ocean in unison and weaving in the depths of the azure sea make for a treasured book. He explores the world of these fascinating creatures from physical to sociological structures. Thompson writes of the dolphin family structure; feeding habits; and relationships with humans and whales, dolphins and porpoises.
Beautifully Photographed!.......1998-12-25
Informative and beautifully photographed! Recommended for those seeking to view dolphin photos and covers the areas from birth, conservation and politics to general statistics. Enjoy it!
