Book Description
This heavily illustrated volume will prove a blessing to every aquarium hobbyist who has had to settle for superficial plant descriptions in general fish-keeping books. It presents a detailed A-to-Z directory covering hundreds of aquarium plants with high quality color photos and succinct profiles of each plant. Information includes the plant's common name, botanical designation, growth cycle, and general description. The book's additional sections offer details on how to grow and propagate aquatic plants, and how to protect them from parasites and other problems. This handsome volume features approximately 450 color photos and illustrations.
Customer Reviews:
What a waste of money.......2007-07-23
Don't purchase this book unless you are a botanist. It is very difficult to understand and the layout impossible to follow.
Good book but some questions remain unanswer........2007-06-30
This is a beautiful book with many high quality pictures of the plants. Overall it has well organized content but some informations are just not specific enough. For example, how much CO2 to dose to your tank is appropriate? How much Gh is a water soft or hard? How much time it normally takes to "cycle" a tank? No introduction on the pros and cons of different CO2 reactors types. Some answers may not be trivial but at least general guide line should be provided to be any useful.
A great all round book for aquatic plants.......2007-06-02
This is a very good all round book for aquatic plants from the substrata , to light requirments etc etc. This book even give basic gardening requirments and arranging to have a healthy and attractice garden in your aquarium .
A great plant book.......2007-01-28
This is an excellent book, simple as that. It has information on not only plants, but many other important aspects of aquarium care. It has extensive information on how plants work in the natural habitat, in the aquarium, and how to care for them.
Everything is simple and concise and explained well, the images are great and show exactly what they should. How to trim different plants, how to plant them, how to get rid of algae and making a balance of nutrients in the aquarium and so on. Just examples of what it covers, if you have an aquarium and have plants and just want to know what to do to keep your plants healthy, just get this book.
Great introduction to aquatic plant care.......2006-08-03
If you are new to planted tanks, then this is a great book to have. It discusses all of the relevent topics ranging from tank setup to pruning and proprogating to nutrients and equipment. The first half of the book is a guide to all of the aspects of caring for aquatic plants. There are a few places where a little more thorough discussion would have been valuble, but for most cases the book does a good job covering the topics. The second half of the book lists many of the plants that you can keep emersed or submerged in an aquarium. There are very nice pictures to go along with the descriptions, making it a useful reference for most plants you will find in your LFS.
In short, I'd say this book would be a nice addition to any planted tank enthusiasts library.
Book Description
Translated from the popular 1999 revised German edition, this text describes the temperature, water, fertilizer, and light needs of more than 300 aquarium plants. Artificial lighting - lamp types, color temperatures, and mounting - is discussed in detail and the author provides advice on choosing the right plants for an aquarium. Ecological factors, flower biology and morphology, and reproduction methods receive detailed coverage. The book contains 525 color photographs with nearly all plants depicted with fully developed submerged foliage. Many of the photographs of rare plants were published for the first time in the German edition. Botanists as well as professional and amateur aquarium keepers will find this book indispensable.

Best Aquarium Plants Book.......2007-01-23
This book of the Author is the most comprehensive book, that I've ever had chance to refer to, written about the aquarium plants. I'd like to point my two concerns out: 1) A book printed on semi-glossy or matte paper would be much easier to be read due to its prevention of light reflection especially when it has lots of photos. 2) Although the book contains hundreds of photos, it would be better if both the submersed and immersed photos for each plant have been put.
_THE_ Aquarium Plant Reference Book!.......2006-11-04
If you buy only one aquatic plant book, make it this one. It's so heavy with detailed information and spectacular photos that it makes my arm tired just holding it. The first 85 pages are about aquatic plant habitat, morphology, and propagation. There is information on planted aquarium care, design, and choosing correct plants. That leads up to the 400+ pages that represent a compendium of aquatic plant species, each with detailed descriptions and photos. There are useful appendixes, too. I own hundreds of aquarium books. This is one I turn to most.
Great read for aquatic plant enthusiasts.......2006-08-15
Christel Kasselmann's knowledge and passion on aquatic plants are unsurpassed. However the book is a bit out-dated as it has not included the latest plants available especially from my part of the world.
Simply the best.......2005-09-20
In my opinion, this is the best aquarium plants atlas that currently exists in English.
Great book for Aquatic Plants lover.......2004-11-30
I don't think too much if I claim this book is the most comprehensive AQUATIC PLANTS book at the moment. After long waiting being translated, I feel satisfy when read carefully the book content.
In another word I agree to say this as Aquatic Plants Encyclopedia for year 2000.
YUP, It is not 100% perfect, but at least this book is enriching our information source to identify the plants, habitat, origin and other useful informations.
Last, it a must have for everybody in planted aquaria hobby.

Book Description
For experienced hobbyists and beginners, here are short profiles on more than 40 different plants combined with details on selecting and maintaining water plants. There's even a section on how plants and fish interact in an aquarium. Ninety striking full-color photos.
Customer Reviews:
It's just "OK".......2006-07-31
Less than impressive small, thin paperback. Profiles only a small amount of species. There are at least a few errors: mislabeled photos and incorrectly identified species of plants and fish.
Good Manual to have........2005-07-07
This manual is worht the money and is very helpful in the types of Aquarium plants that work best with different species of fish and water conditions. I found this maunual to be well worth the money and very helpful and it does have diagrams to show you exactly what you're being instructed on.
Well worth the price 4++ stars.......2003-12-14
This little book is a very good value. It covers more than 40 different plants in its encylopedia section in addition to its glossary and several different info sections, including info on lighting, nutrients, selection and care. It gives more info about plants than can be obtained in the more general information books and is very inexpensive. It could be organized a little better but it is still very useful and very much worth the price.
Where Are The Fish Supposed To Go?.......2003-12-06
There are books out there that are sensitive to the interaction of fish and plants. This is not one of them. Please invest a little more money and purchase one of those other books. The sample layouts are incredibly overcrowded. Even some of the photographs reflect the overcrowding!
Best planted aquarium book [for this amount].......2003-02-14
Please excuse me, I'm about to gush. If you are just going to buy one book, and you have [little] to spend, buy this one. (If you have unlimited funds, buy this one plus Aquarium Plants by Christel Kasselmann).
As the planted aquarium chairman at our aquarium club, I get a lot of questions. The answers to most of them are in this book. It is a great beginner reference, but be sure to go back and reread it after you've been in the hobby for six months, because you'll learn a lot more about pruning, aquascaping, trimming, etc.
Just buy it!

These vividly colored fish of the carp family are ideal for artificial garden ponds. Here is detailed information on koi varieties, advice on purchasing them and practical facts on feeding, breeding, and maintaining a healthful environment in your fish pond. Dozens of color photos and line drawings. Paperback / 104 Pages / 6 1/2 7 7/8 / 1995
Customer Reviews:
very good for the price.......2004-09-13
If this were an expensive book, I wouldn't rate it so highly, but it has more information than you'd think for a cheap little paperback. The koi varieties section is mediocre, but you want a big glossy hardcover for that anyway, right? The advice on koi handling and transport is outstanding, with great emphasis on minimizing stress to your fish. There is also information on plants, something most koi keepers disdain to mention. Another reviewer thought the author was against wheat germ sticks for koi--he's not condemning them, just saying there's no proof they make a difference in over-wintering. So much of koi advice is unsupported, it doesn't hurt to mention the fact.
Ok.......2002-06-04
Where's the part about behavior, the part about training your fish to come on over (admittedly this is easy) and how about a more comprehensive types and markings - it was also sad they really skipped over butterfly koi. Otherwise nice pictures and a good disease section.
Oh well. Nice book to have, but it is not by any means complete.
Good, but could be better.......2002-05-16
This book includes everything you need to take care of koi, but sometimes in too much detail. Many of the items in this book are exactly the opposite of what I have read elsewhere (e.g wheatgerm sticks are bad for koi??)
While too much detail is usually the problem, there are also many parts when there are not enough facts to actually understand what thi book is trying to say.
It's an OK beginners guide, but some parts can be tedious and confusiong.
One of the two books you need........2002-02-07
This book has all the information you need on keeping Koi. Don't let its small size fool you. I have browse through all available Koi books, this book is the only one you need. You will not get more information from other books, except for more pictures. Buy this book and another book titled "The ponder's Bible" for excellent information on pond building and maintenance. These two books will be more than enough for keeping Koi sucessfully.
Excellent.......2000-07-18
If you're a beginner at having a pond and keeping koi, this is a great book. It has everything from digging the pond, filters and pumps...to everything you need to know to keep the pond clean for your fish. The book identifys the various breeds of koi, with a complete section on diseases.

What not do to for aquariums.......2007-01-24
Great at telling you what to what to watch out for--look out for temperature. PH is important, etc. But your next question is of course, what is the right temperature? What PH should it be? It's not in this book. If you're a new person to this you need a more informative resource. This is only good at telling you what to look for, but not good at telling you what it should be, and certainly not how to fix things that go wrong.
Ugh... I don't know anything and even I thought it was junk.......2006-08-29
I picked up this book at a local bookstore and paid full price. This was a mistake. I would have felt ripped off even if it was in the bargain bin for a buck. About the only thing I would use this book for is a firestarter.
I as of yet own no aquarium, and even I could see that this book was sorely lacking in useful information. As others have pointed out, the most important topic of all, aquarium maintenance, receives scant coverage. Their coverage of fish species overall is spotty, and there is little to no information on acceptable Ph values, temperature, compatibility with other species, diets, common diseases, or suitability for beginners. IMHO, a book for beginners should contain pretty much everything a beginner needs to know to get started. This book is woefully lacking. I have no ability to know how accurate the information in this book is, but I can say that I would not rely on it for a second.
The copy I have was the 12th printing of the book, yet the quality of the text is something I would expect from a rough draft. Most glaring are the same sentences or facts repeated in two separate close-together sections. In one case, I saw the same thing phrased two different ways in successive paragraphs. Even the most blind and incompetent editor would have spotted this in a casual reading.
Given the major style issues, I have absolutely no confidence in the accuracy of the information presented in this book. If this book never went through a copy-editor, I doubt it was reviewed properly for factual content either. If you have the misfortune of owning this book, try and get your money back.
Worst book ever.......2005-03-09
I felt like a dummy after I read this book ( ripped off $$ ! ). Its like they had a one day deadline to write and published this book.
Very incomplete.......2004-11-30
I have a B.S. in marine science, and I decided I wanted to bring my work home with me. Someone bought me this book and I read through most of the sections. I was very disappointed. The author doesn't discuss cleaning of the tank in any detail, such as how often you need to clean the gravel, plants and other decorations; they also missed out on describing common problems such as bacterial or algal blooms and what to do. I found some of the information very helpful, but overall, this is far from a complete reference book for the beginner aquarist.
A Great Beginner's Book, Very useful information........2004-10-04
This is a great beginner's book...if you are a medium to expert hobbyist this book is not for you. As the cover says..this book is for people that are new into the fish keeping hobby. It will cover all the basics you need to get going. I got a lot of information from this book when i was a beginner. It covers everything from purchase/setup tanks...to fishes...to plants...to invertibrates and a whole lot more. A very fun book to read and I would recommend it to anyone new to the hobby of keeping wet pets.
Book Description
This book shows you step-by-step and fish-by-fish how to create a beautiful, harmonious aquarium that mimics a natural habitat and fosters healthy fish and plant life. It includes more than eighty detailed recipes for aquariums of different types and sizes, specific aquarium model designs, the basics of aquarium setup and maintenance, and a 16-page color catalog of fish and plant varieties.
Customer Reviews:
Good Solid Information.......2007-07-23
This book would be useful to a beginner or advanced aquarist. The plant layouts for various types of fish was very easy to understand. A great all around book.
Pictures and diagrams paints a thousand words.......2007-05-22
A real disappointment! It promises so much but delivered so little. The book would have been excellent if it had included photos, pictures and layout diagram of most or all the different tanks. The 16-page color insert is not an inspiring catalog of fish and plant varities as metioned, in fact it's rather pathetic. I can't understand how the back cover of the book can promise that the book would show readers step-by-step and fish-by-fish how to create the aquarium models. I can't find any step-by-step instructions anywhere. If this was a cookbook, which it is not, then it would only been average. I hope the author would expand the book in his next edition with real step-by-step instructions with photos, pictures and diagrams. He could take advice from the old adage, "a picture paints a thousand word". All in all, too much words and just simply boring. Anyone can write a receipe, readers need some proof of the finished aquarium models. I think readers will find books by Takashi Amano more useful and inspiring, at least they have a picture of the model aquariums in which to aspire for.

Customer Reviews:
useless book.......2007-09-30
This book was too complicated for the beginner and too superficial for everybody else. While all the photos of plants contained more than one type of plant, the caption failed to identify more than one type and it was never clear which plant the caption was referring too. Many of the more complicated topics were treated so superficially as to be of any use to anybody and should have been left out entirely
Why & How to kepp and aquarium........2007-09-13
The authors have done an excellant job of describing water chemistry and the reasons various filtration systems work. pH, KH, hardness, nitrites, and nitrates are all covered. Testing and correction of water deficiencies are described very well. The explanation of Kingdoms of platnts, animals, etc. is very enlightening. The different catagories of plants are also covered as well as their use in an aquarium. Fish that are compatible with a planted aquarium are also suggested.
Very nicely formatted Overview or Introduction.......2007-03-25
I've kept planted aquariums for a number of years, but was intrigued by this book because one of the co-authors is a well-known advocate of low-tech planted tanks.
The format of this book is VERY nice. The writing is friendly and inviting, and there are lots of pretty full color photos. Personally, I didn't learn a whole lot of new information, but it was a pleasant read nonetheless. I would certainly recommend it to someone just entering the hobby, or someone looking for an overview on planted tanks, especially if they're seeking some guidance on what type of planted tank is the best fit for them - high tech, low tech, biotope, etc. All around, a very good presentation, and an excellent invitation to exploring planted aquariums!
Good book for beginner........2006-03-02
This book has been quite helpful for my husband who is setting up his first planted aquarium. It is well organized, informative, and easy to read. The authors offer suggestions of compatible fish as well as plants, substrates, and water management.

Great Book.......2007-05-19
This is a great plant book for freshwater aquariums. Simply, uncomplicated and great pictures. My boyfriend liked it so much I had to order him one!
Decent Book if you don't already own the Hiscock Encyclopedia.......2006-12-02
I'm rather ambiguous about this book. If you don't already own some of the other books by the same author, or are looking for a median-priced beginning to your aquarium plants library, this is probably a really good choice. However, I already own the Encylopedia of Aquarium Plants (also by Hiscock) and Creating a Natural Aquarium (Hiscock). I found a lot of the information redundant with the Encyclopedia. On the other hand, it has a lot of the same solid, well-explained information, in a more concise, softcover book. If you don't already own the Encyclopedia, or are looking for an introductory book (perhaps as a gift for someone just getting into the hobby) its an excellent value, and an engaging read. However, if you're already well-versed in the hobby, or own the Encyclopedia, it may not be as useful. I found the other book, Creating a Natural Aquarium much more interesting (I ordered it and the "Essential Guide" at the same time), because it was a very different perspective on aquarium plants, approached from a biotope viewpoint.
But, as an overall, introductory guide, it really is quite good, with easy-to-understand diagrams and very well laid out information.

Hello from the Author.......2003-08-12
Thank you for reading my book. I try to bring you my experience as a hobbyist just like you. I learned a lot by trial and error while building ponds. I hope that my advice allows you to avoid some of the pitfalls that I found.
Relax, listen to the water and enjoy your new pond.

Book Description
Why do a million people a year visit the tiny seacoast town of Newport, Oregon, whose population is only 8,400? It isn't the beautiful beaches or the quaint fishing harbor, it's the Oregon Coast Aquarium. In cities large and small around the world, recent innovations in aquarium design have transformed what were once damp, stodgy science displays into lively and exciting introductions to the fascinating undersea world.
Attracted by the new spectacles offered to aquarium visitors, Diane Cook and Len Jenshel have traveled around the world photographing these dramatic environments and their enthralled audiences. Fifteen aquariums in North America, five in Europe, five in the Caribbean (including three in Cuba), and three in Japan are included.
Seventy photographs, half in color and half in black-and-white, are accompanied by an interview with the photographers by Lawrence Wechsler, the much-honored New Yorker writer.
Customer Reviews:
More than just a passing snapshot.......2004-09-06
Readers glancing at titles would of course believe a book simply titled Aquarium would be another primer on maintaining aquatic life in a glass tank: think again. Diane Cook and Len Jenshel are photographers with a fascination for displays of aquatic life: their visual celebration Aquarium took over three years to complete, translated their landscape photography skills to the water world, and involved travel to eight countries to explore many different aquarium environments, making Aquarium's visual display more than just a passing snapshot.
Something familiar, Something Beautiful.......2004-05-13
Diane Cook and Len Jenshel are nothing short of the Batman and Robin of photography. The question is who is who? and the result is always a surprise. There is always a sense of healthy competition between the two in their work, Diane in B/W and Len in Color. The subject matter of 'Aquariums' like their previous book "Hots Spots" is rather ordinary or simply expected. Jenshel and Cook take on those cliched subjects that are written off as either too loaded or too easy and try to throw out the obvious such as the lack of red lava in Hot Spots and deal with the unobvious surrounding the obvious . Though indoors, "Aquariums" is still Landscape photography per se. The land and sea nicely placed in boxes sealed off for us too see. We are shown gorgeous images that we expect to see reminding us where we are and then others so foreign in context that we have to take a second look. Perhaps one of the greatest statements this book makes is the fact that these aquariums from U.S. to Japan look as though they could be the same place. This is what happens when we get our hands on nature.
With that said they choose to withhold personal bias and everything is shown to be so incredibly beautiful. another great edition to the Jenshel/Cook family.
