5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive - read BEFORE buying your Iggy.......2007-08-26

First-rate coverage of the whys & wherefores of raising iguanas, especially the Green Iguana. It would be a good idea to read the first few chapters before buying to get a feel for the Iguana "lifestyle".

5 out of 5 stars Green Iguana: The Ultimate Owner's Manual.......2007-06-28

As the subtitle says, this is the "ultimate owner's manual." It is comprehensive book, with detailed and specific information, punctuated by anecdotes from iguana owners. Because the iguana is a difficult pet to maintain, with specific environmental and dietary requirements, this book is essential to the iguana owner.

5 out of 5 stars A must have for all Iguana owners, or Wanna be's.......2007-03-23

This book has it all. Everything you need to know about your pet. The photos are beautiful, and the written word is concise and easily understood. The authors passion for Iguanas is obvious, and his knowledge on the subject vast. It may seem expensive and perhaps you wonder if you need so much information, but if you have an Iguana you owe it to yourself to understand this unusual reptiles behavior, habits and special needs. After reading this book, I became more aware of my Jacks special place on this planet.

5 out of 5 stars Exhaustively researched and still a good read........2007-02-23

This book has helped me a great deal in giving both my pet iguanas excellent care. It covers all the ranges of care from designing or a habitat or what to look for in a preexisting one, as well as proper health care and nutrition. It even explains how to identify the country of orgin based on coloring and body type. It teaches responsibility and actually discourages getting an iguana if the would be owner thinks it is an easy to care for pet. All in all its one of the best pieces of nonfiction i have read and it full of easy to follow advice presented in a clear detailed manner.

5 out of 5 stars Extremely informative and accurate.......2007-02-02

This book is the best Green iguana book I have ever read and has the best and most accurate information on large green iguanas. It is very difficult to take care of these little green guys and this book absolutely a life saver. If I only had the funds to purchase one book on iguanas, I would choose this one.

5 out of 5 stars Must Read for All Prospective and Current Iggy Caretakers.......2007-08-04

There is a reason that many reptile rescues require iguana adopters to purchase this book. Melissa Kaplan's book is the bible for iguana care. If you read this book and follow it's instructions, your little green friend will live a long and healthy life! The book is also extremely useful if you are debating getting an iguana. You should definitely read it before bringing one home (the level of care an iguana requires might discourage you from getting one).

2 out of 5 stars Generalizations and exaggerations.......2006-01-31

"most", "some"... Facts need to be added to support her views, which is what her writings come down to... her views. Stick with other books if you are looking for the way to properly care for your little green friend. Check out 'Green Iguana: The Ultimate Owner's Manual by James W., III Hatfield' Hatfield relies less on shock value and exaggerations, facts are important.

5 out of 5 stars A "Must Have" for every iguana owner.......2006-01-25

I have had my green iguana for three years and it seems I never stop learning when it comes to whats best for her. I really wasn't aware how poor of care she was receiving until I bought this book. It's helped me help her so many times, and opened my eyes to details I was ignorant about before.

This book is easy to read and understand. The way the topics are divided make it easy to reference anything you want. Though it's not meant to be read cover to cover, I did so anyway.

Melissa Kaplan knows what she's talking about.

5 out of 5 stars A Must for Ig Owners & Ig Owners To Be.......2005-09-27

Excellent information written concisely and with a sense of humor by someone who truly knows, loves, and admires the species.

5 out of 5 stars Quality & Value.......2003-06-05

Living in the Florida Keys we have dealt extensively with discarded Iguanas - perhaps 15 or more. People buy them, and get rid of them constantly - and down here, in the semi-tropics, they can survive (with difficulty)in the wild.
With all the iguana problems we have encountered good information is a necessity, & we have purchased many iguana books including Hatfield's "Green Iguana, the Ultimate Owners Guide" (a great book, but we still prefer Kaplan's "Iguanas for Dummies").
If you still want addtional technical data you can add "What's Wrong with My Iguana" by John Rossi M.A., D.V.M. and "Understanding Reptile Parasites" by Roger Klingenberg D.V.M.
Kaplan's book is based on research & a lot of personal experience. It is thorough, and her experience shows through - there are tidbits of information that have been useful to us that we have not found elsewhere. She has long maintained a caring website to help iguana owners and potential iguana buyers - not just to sell books. And the price of this book is reasonable.
By all means get a good book like Hatfield's or Kaplan's - preferably before you get an iguana. Even if the book talks you out of getting an ig for a pet it will be well worth the price. Proper care for an iguana involves a devoting a lot of time and spending a lot of money. The cost of the animal is nothing in comparison, and they are far more complex to care for than a dog, cat, or hamster. Judging from the number of abandoned iguanas in the Florida Keys a huge number of people do not bother to inform themselves and the animals suffer. It may not be entirely their fault. Many pet stores do not seem to offer the best books or accurate information - often they just want to sell a hapless reptile, and make a few bucks on inadequate (sometimes dangerous) supplies and food. They frequently give bad advice.
Whatever book you get you will still need to get a good experienced herp vet., and they are hard to find. Things go wrong with iguanas that are not covered with specificity in any of these books. We have been unfortunate enough to encounter some of them.

Book Description

Alex just has to convince his mom to let him have an iguana, so he puts his arguments in writing. He promises that she won't have to feed it or clean its cage or even see it if she doesn't want to. Of course Mom imagines life with a six-foot-long iguana eating them out of house and home. Alex's reassurances: It takes fifteen years for an iguana to get that big. I'll be married by then and probably living in my own house. and his mom's replies: How are you going to get a girl to marry you when you own a giant reptile? will have kids in hysterics as the negotiations go back and forth through notes. And the lively, imaginative illustrations show their polar opposite dreams of life with an iguana.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderfully entertaining.......2007-07-29

I purchased this book for my grandsons, I read it first and laughed through out. Then I gave it to them and they also thought it was funny. It's very entertaining, and written for adults and children.

5 out of 5 stars Alex could be your child.......2007-03-14

This book is so wonderfully written by Karen Orloff that Alex is able to appeal to all ages, races and genders. If your child has ever asked for a pet you can identify with this book. The mother son relationship is how we all remember our grown and almost grown little boys starting out.

5 out of 5 stars I WANNA, I WANNA, I WANNA ..........2007-01-12

THIS BOOK DESERVES A MEDAL AND I WILL GIVE YOU THE REASONS FOR THIS STARTING WITH THE STRONGEST REASON.... no just kidding... I will not try to persuade you to buy this book like the little boy Alex "successfully" persuades his mom to buy him an iguana... This is an excellent book to kickstart a writing lesson or a debating lesson on persuasion - an what a hoot... an age level I think in the elementry grades would find this entertaining and be able to also find some text-self understanding here. Every child from the dawning of time has always wanted a pet... be i a small one like a fish or hamster.... but what about an iguana he/she is small now but???

Terrific book - The kids and YOU will love it

5 out of 5 stars I Wanna Read It Over and Over Again.......2006-11-09

I saw this in the library at school and HOWLED with laughter (much to the librarian's dismay) and fell in love with it. Great book, imaginative, HILARIOUS and definitely will be loved by children.

5 out of 5 stars Persuasive writing.......2006-04-02

Teachers can look to this story as a great example of persuasive writing. Young Alex is trying to pursuade his mother to let him adopt an iguana. In a series of hilarious notes between Alex and his mother, the terms and conditions of pet ownership are hammered out. There is a "money" page (the point where the whole class bursts out in raucous laughter.) David Catrow illustrations are wonderfully comic. One young listener observed, "That kid is really weird looking." The last page evoked a class wide, arm pumping "Yesssss..." along with Alex. Great fun!

Book Description

Lately, Key West is not quite the laid back place that occasional freelance crime-scene-photographer Alex Rutledge prefers. It’s bad enough that the discovery of two dead ex-Navy men one morning?both found swinging on boat lifts twenty miles apart?means grisly work at the indecent hour of 7AM. It’s worse that Alex’s run-in with a chest-thumping new deputy turns out to have ominous consequences when his wayward younger brother turns up in town...and becomes the prime suspect.

Alex knows Tim has messed up his life, but he just can’t believe his brother isn't a killer. As Alex digs deeper, he starts to make connections the cops have missed?but he’s baffled when he finds one of the deceased owns a picture of a young girl who turned to Alex for help many years ago. And when a third man is found swinging on the docks, he knows time is running out for his brother. But what he doesn’t know is that facing the killer may turn out to be the least of his problems...

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Enjoyed the setting, plot needed work.......2007-01-11

Florida Keys resident Alex Rutledge is a photographer and, lately, a police photographer. There hasn't been a hanging on the Keys in thirty years and, suddenly, there are two and maybe three. The odd thing is that Alex, rather than a policeman, was the only one at all three crime scenes and he's having a hard time convincing the police the three crimes are not suicide and are related. His problems increase when his older brother, who looks almost like Alex but has a less than clean record, comes to town and becomes a suspect.

I enjoyed the setting of the Florida Keys and, to me, it was one of the most interesting parts of the book. The plot was improbable that, even with so many jurisdictions, the police work could be that sloppy and that Alex could come up with information and connections the police couldn't. But that's my problem with most stories whose protagonists are amateur sleuths. Still, I enjoyed the characters, the dialogue and the setting. It wasn't a great book, but it was an okay read.

4 out of 5 stars Another Great One.......2006-11-06

I have read all of the Alex Rutledge series and if you love Key West these are the books for you. If you do not love Key West get ready to.

4 out of 5 stars 5th Book and still worth while........2006-03-08

Well done for the 5th book by the author. The story moves along and provides a taste of the Florida Keys. My only complaint is the author's addiction to building the story that is always tied to Rutledge's personal life in Key West during the 1970s.

5 out of 5 stars Keyed Up.......2006-01-30

Alex Rutledge actually gets into action out of Key West, albeit it is just across the seven mile bridge. Maybe it is that Corcoran's soul is in Key West more than most of the many writers based there, but this latest of his tightly plotted and well written novels has a sense of the spirit of the place that I find in few of the others. The author knows his setting and characters (with Alex Rutledge the sometimes crime photographer, sometimes freelancer, pal of "Chicken Neck" - former Key West city detective, now Monroe County Sheriff, Alex's past and present lovers, associates and now rogue brother, Tim) there is a cast appropriate to the Keys. The actual strange mix of legal jurisdictions - Monroe County, State of Florida, City of Key West and other Keys' cities, the Feds with immigration, shore patrol, coast guard and FBI - has made for the sort of tangle of ambitions, secrets and confusions which a crime novelist of Corcoran's skill can exploit to create a great read.
The everpresent signs spotted by every tourist describing the Keys: "A quaint little drinking town with a fishing problem!" are at work here. We first see Tim in custody, outside the Bull and Whistle after a few of their very cold draft beers. The mysterious coincidences of the Keys: lookalikes, chance meetings, odd meetings of e spouses and old friends in saloons or walking along Smathers beach, which all Key residents know happen, may be the greatest stretchers of readers' credulity, but spend a month in Marathon sometime and the reality of such unrealities will sink in. And then there are Keys' jokes. "jackalope" would not stand a chance there. We wonder throughout about the murders by davit that start the novel off - are they some ironic joke. Only at the end will you learn. And it will be worth it. A word of caution Do not skip ahead and spoil it .

5 out of 5 stars You'll love these books.......2006-01-27

This was my first Alex Rutledge mystery and I've gone on to buy the rest of Corcoran's catalog. These are great books -- some of the best and most nuanced mystery novels I've ever read.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting Collection of Essays- A must for natural science lovers!.......2007-05-16

I was introduced to David Quammen by a student of mine and this is so far my favorite of his unique perspectives on the natural world. This is a good read even if science is not your life (as it is mine, for I am a high school science teacher)and it is a REALLY good read for those of you who live and breath the subject. The essays are short enough to be a light break when necessary and engaging enough to keep you occupied for an afternoon when the opportunity presents itself.

5 out of 5 stars good.......2002-04-10

i had to read this book for my ecology class in college. it was probably the first text outside of literature class that i actually enjoyed reading; it didn't seem like homework. it made me laugh too. i don't even like science that much, but i really enjoyed reading this.

5 out of 5 stars What is YOUR view of nature?.......2001-02-12

David Quammen's Song of the Dodo led me in search of his other writings. The first reward of that quest was this book. A collection of essays from an illustrious writer with keen perception, Quammen casts his perceptive eye on a range of topics from arachnids to zoology. While an anthology lacks Song's comprehensive view, these articles are timeless. Quammen's writing evokes many levels of emotional and intellectual response.

The Introduction sets the tone: "A Mouse Is Miracle Enough". From this opening we tour the wonders of nature, with a couple of side trips to observe that strangest of animals, Homo sapiens. Quammen's gaze never ceases surveying the landscape in presenting us with things we didn't know or aspects of viewing we've not considered. While the very squeamish may balk at close examination of black widow spiders, spoon worms or scorpions, Quammen is adept at taking us gently to these confrontations. As he does, he asks us to reconsider our viewpoint of these and other creatures. We must learn to deal with "faces unlike ours" and shed prejudices even if shedding the fears is more difficult. Changing fear into respect is the first step in acknowledging our sharing this planet with other creatures and stepping back from the destructive role we've adopted.

Respect for life is the underlying theme of all Quammen's nature writings. His "sidelong view of nature" takes us along remote jungle and desert paths to watch and record life's activities. While we like to set ourselves apart from the rest of life, Quammen, with facile pressure, pulls us along with him to observe our cousins. And ourselves. Deserts, it seems, are a haven for more than scorpions and Beaded Lizards. Among the many nocturnal animals hiding from the desert sun is a bipedal hominid. In this instance, the animals are groups of refugees seeking sanctuary in a hostile environment. Quammen's account of Guatemalan refugees and their mentors, also intelligent chimpanzees risk much to support and succor them. It's not a pleasant story, nor one any American can read without remorse. Quammen has made a sharp turn here from his usual investigations of nature's secrets. Refugee running is every bit as much a secret as nature offers, but with what humans are pleased to call a "moral issue". Quammen relates how well we've addressed that issue.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2000-08-20

These personal essays are a delight to read. Quammen takes some serious scientific information and then filters it through his humorous perspective and draws some interesting conclusions. All the essays are short but they are provocative and well written. Gee, how come I never had a biology teacher like this!

5 out of 5 stars QUAMMEN IN KING-.......2000-03-24

Technical, yet understandable to anyone; Informative, yet wild and entertaining. That is how I would describe Flight of The Igauna. A friend gave this book to me in Glacier National Park last summer and I never got the chance to thank her for it. Dave Quammen takes takes the reader to his journey through the Okefenokee Swamp to a description of the interesting mating rituals by African bedbugs. He has a cynical voice but a compassionate heart. Nature is so fragile, complex, beautiful. We humans must realize this. A great book. You'll love it, a I did! Promise!

!Caramba! Iguana is planning a fiesta. Tortuga the tortoise, Gonejo the rabbit, and Gulebra the snake all want to come. But do they want to help Iguana deliver invitations or stuff the pinata or cook the food? No, no, and no! A lazy trio loses out in this clever update of the story of the Little Red Hen with a Mexican twist. A glossary of Spanish words is included.

My daughter got this book for her preschool class and they love listening to her read it again and again. The children remember the Spanish words and their meanings. The pictures really make this book special.

5 out of 5 stars Look at the illustrations.......2006-08-25

If you don't study the illustrations, you'll miss a lot of extra humor. The writing is great, but the illustrations really add an extra twist of irony, as the excuses made by the friends look more and more foolish given their undescribed actions as drawn on the page. My kids love this book.

5 out of 5 stars Mañana Iguana.......2006-06-21

The story is about an Iguana and her friends that were organizing a party on Saturday. But iguana had to do everything herslf because the snake, the conejo and the tortuga were only giving excuses so they didn't help. The main characteres are the Iguana, the conejo, the snake, and the tortuga. The tortuga, the conejo and the snake didn't want to help. The Iguana is my favorite character because she was the one who did eerything and she did the right thing. Sometimes I ask my sister if she could help me in something and she allways give excuses for not do it. One time my dad told us to clean a room nd only my big sister and I were cleaning and my other sister was only telling my dad that she had done something alredy. I did like the book. My favorite part was when everyone was in the fiesta having a good ime. My least favorite part was when they didn't want to help her deliver the invitations. If I could, I would change the setting o a prettier. I would rcommend this book to my friend. I hink that my brother Frank would like this book (he is three years old).

5 out of 5 stars Loved it!.......2005-09-11

My son loves this book. He has several twists on "The Little Red Hen" and this one is one of his favorites. There isn't too much spanish to make the book too hard or lose his interest, but just enough to broaden his vocabulary.

5 out of 5 stars Red hen with flare.......2005-05-06

I loved the story of The Little Red Hen when I was a child, but I'm going to read Manana Iguana to my children. The Colorful illustrations along with the great fiesta story make this book a must for my library. It was as much fun for me to read as it was for my daughter. The vibrant colors and character's personalities had us anticipating the turn of every page. I also love the story's bilingual element. If you grew up in a "spanglish" home, you absolutely need this book!

Book Description

Inspired by the true life experiences of Henry Winkler, whose undiagnosed dyslexia made him a classic childhood underachiever, the Hank Zipzer series is about the high-spirited and funny adventures of a boy with learning differences.

It's science project time in Ms. Adolf's class. This is good news and bad news for Hank-he loves science, but he hates the report part. So Hank turns to TV to take his mind off things. But when the program directory scrolls by too quickly for Hank to know what's on, he decides to take apart the cable box to try to slow down the crawl. Great! Now Hank has found the perfect science project! But what he wasn't counting on was his sister's pet iguana laying eighteen eggs in the disassembled cable box. How is Hank going to get out of this one?

Illustrated by Carol Heyer.

5 out of 5 stars Day of the Iguana.......2006-02-10

The Day of the Iguana tells the story of a fourth grader named Hank Zipzer and his sister's iguana. Science projects are coming due for Hank, so he has to find a project and fast. He gets the idea to take apart his cable box and see what's inside. Wha† he didn't count on is his sister Emily's iguaua laying 23 eggs.
This book gives you a look at a boy called Hank Zipzer and how he gets through a few months of fourth grade with his best friend Frankie and his sister Emily and her iguana Catharine. The story starts in the beautiful modern city of New York. Hank has to put on a magic show for his twin cousins and promises Frankie to tape a monster movie when there doing the show but he accidentally presses the wrong button and tapes something else. Hank feels so guilty that he decides to take apart a cable box and see if he can prevent that from happening in the future. My favorite part in the book is when the baby iguanas are born. They are so cute. I recommend this book to children and family because it is about honor and trust. It is a great book and teaches kids that iguana birth can make a big change to your life. It also teaches you how to be a great friend.

5 out of 5 stars A great series for boys!.......2005-07-17

The way I see it, any book that can keep a 10 year old boy away from his video games, gets 5 stars and then some. "Day of the Iguana" and the other eight books will do for boys what "The Babysitters Club" did for girls. I've been waiting a long time for something boys can relate to other than "Yu Gi Oh" comic books and "Captain Underpants." Henry Winkler has done that with Hank Zipzer and his friends, he's made reading fun for boys. You can count on Hank getting himself in a situation that would be best handled being straightforward and you can count on him going out of his way being anything but. The best part is watching you kid choose Hank over the TV. Parents all over will understand just what an accomplishment that is.

5 out of 5 stars Funny book!.......2002-08-23

Hurray for Tom and Dom! I really love reading this book aloud. Tom and Dom are such great characters I wish that Tony Johnston would write another Iguana brothers book. With illustrations by Mark Teague, of course.

4 out of 5 stars not my favorite mark Teague.......2001-04-26

This book is charming with the old moral story of "it is best to be yourself". The art is great but since the story mostly involves 2 iguanas lazing around and talking, there really was not a chance for Mark to apply his wonderful upbeat inventive artwork. But if you want grand fun, check out other books that are illustrated by the illustrator of this book. He even writes some of his books too. Try, "the secret shortcut", "the lost and found", a recent great book "One Halloween Night", "Pigsty" (great at convincing anyone they should have a clean room), "No moon, no milk", "what I did on my summer vacation", and "the baby tamer". The best of all for over the top inventiveness is "the flying dragon room".

4 out of 5 stars A Funny Tale of Friendship.......2000-09-20

3-8 yrs. Children will enjoy this story of Tom and Dom, two Iguana brothers who contemplate such issues as whether or not to eat bugs, their realization that they are dinosaurs, and having friends. They speak english with occasional spanish words reflecting their locale & habitat. A funny story.

5 out of 5 stars Great for brothers.......1999-09-27

Tom and Dom are so fun, we've read this book over and over again. We've imagined all sorts of new adventures for Tom and Dom, and we've learned some Spanish along the way. This is definately in the the top 10 of our hundreds of children's books.

5 out of 5 stars Very entertaining and conveys a great message!.......1999-02-23

I would recommend this book for primary grade levels and even for older children for the humorous content. This book is as much fun for the teacher as it is for the kids. It has a great message that brothers can also be friends. I recommend this book highly.

5 out of 5 stars Then why do you read it?.......2006-07-05

The review under mine is ridiculous. This person obviously knows nothing about Tennessee Williams. And incidentally, I have no interest in his email address which he egomaniacally implies one should look for. The characters in this play are not hysterical (except Shannon once when he goes off the deep end, and that's not hysteria come to think of it). This is a beautiful, moving, perceptive and exceptional play. I won't give away the plot in case anyone wants to read it. Williams wrote lots of good and some great plays. This is a great one. I came upon this review (and the one under it which is just inaccurate, the reviewer apparently has a hard time grasping what he reads, if he read it) because I just saw the movie of this play and want to reread it again. I've read it many times, and I love it. I think (though I'm not sure) that Bette Davis played Maxine in the original production, and unlike Ava Gardner's (who was perfect in the part), her "Ha!" was (as is described in the stage directions) an explosion, and occurred frequently. One scene I will give away. Shannon tells Hannah about a place where the animals go to deficate. The place is so poor and the people are so hungry, that the people go through the dung looking for and eating bits of undigested food. Hannah goes behind a tree and throws up. That was left out of the movie. This is a very kind and gentle play. And emotionally (all the Williams' plays I've read are, he used to be a hero of mine, I've outgrown him, except for this gem) and intellectually (not so customary) deep. (That word "deep" will I hope turn you on, not off.) Oh. My email address isn't listed.

5 out of 5 stars Just The Usual Hysterical, Needy, Pathetic Losers Who "Can't Make It Through The Dark Night!!!".......2005-10-31

In this book we once again have the obligatory emotionally tortured characters which are repeated in Tennessee William's works ad infinitum and ad nauseum. In this book the reader is introduced to Reverend T. Lawrence Shannon who seeks refuge in a run down Mexican Hotel. From there on we have the usual hysteria which was a signature of Mr. William's works. It seems that all of his plays and books were about desperate, needy , pathetic people who couldn't "make it through the dark night. My favourite line in this book is "Oh God can we please stop now?" which is exactly what I suggest Mr. Williams should have done with his typewriter. My new Email address is now available although you might have to hunt for a couple of hours on the Internet to find it!!!

4 out of 5 stars May the Beast be Released. .......2005-03-03

The best play of Tennessee's late period, The Night of the Iguana features one of his best characters, in the shape of Reverend T. Lawrence Shannon, a self-hating, sexually angst ridden, anti-reverend, for whom life is now breaking down, again.

Into the hidden Mexican hotel run by the America ex-pat Maxine comes Shannon, again to reconcile his life, where he meets the vagabond painter Hannah and her 97-years-young poet grandfather.

Shannon has been leading tours throughout the world over the years since his explosion at the pulpit propelled him out of the church's favor, and now he has abandoned a busload of Texas women who are fed up with his philandering and his off-the-beaten-path tactics.

All of the drama and trauma of classic Tennessee Williams is here. The tortured Reverend, at odds with God in such a cruel world. A man whose sexuality has been more detrimental than pleasurable. As well, there is Maxine, a middle aged widower, stuck or something like it in Mexico, running a cheap, rough and tumble hotel, far away from the nonsense of cities and America. Then, the spirited Hannah, who takes to Shannon as he to her, in a feeling out of hard hearts, and lonelinesses.

Better than most of his plays, The Night of the Iguana succeeds in it's treatment of lost souls, and the meeting of two people destined for loneliness and disappointment.

5 out of 5 stars Williams' treatise on love and shame.......1998-11-30

"Night of the Iguana" is a Tennessee Williams play unlike any other. Set at a Mexican hotel in the early 1940's, the drama presents several character portraits of searing intensity. The minister Shannon -- tortured with self-loathing over his inability to control his sexual appetite -- has abandoned a tour bus he has been leading and has come to stay with an old friend, Maxine. Shannon is suffering a nervous breakdown, and it is only through the near-angelic presence of Hannah Jelkes, a visitor at Maxine's, that he is able to understand himself and the actions which have brought him to this state. While so many of Williams' characters (including Shannon) feel shamefully about love and sex, in Hannah Jelkes he has created a character entirely without shame. Hannah is Williams' ideal -- a person living living free of societal mores, who (like Blanche DuBois) is offended only by deliberate cruelty and unkindness. The third act, in particular, is transfiguring; had Williams written nothing else, this act alone would guarantee him his place among the greats.

4 out of 5 stars A zany autobiography to go with the character.......2004-01-14

To quote from the afterword "Texas culture, in which Bob "Daddy-O" Wade is certainly a leading, not to say Olympian figure, has long been regarded by some pointy-headed intellectuals as an oxymoron." Quite correctly the afterword goes on to dispel this jaundiced view and give Bob "Daddy-O" Wade full credit for the gargantuan Texan art works he has produced.

Bob Wade resides and was born in Austin, Texas in 1943. He received a BFA from the University of Texas Austin and an M.A. from the University of California Berkeley.

The story starts with Bob's childhood days and his very early introduction to motor scooters and automobiles in Texas. Then the hilarity of the book really starts - not with "Texas Tales" as per the title - but the much more exciting Mexican Tales. Imagine the fun that he and his young buddies had over the border in Juarez where the legal drinking age is "sorta sixteen" and a quart jug of Bacardi rum was about 99 cents. A sexual experience didn't cost much more. Wow, foreign countries are often so much more fun than your own.

Then continuing in this very frank and clearly honest vein, Bob takes us through his days at university and through his career. His work includes giant size sculptures for display as public art. The best known was probably a giant iguana which resided during its heydays on the roof of the Lone Star café in New York. Then there's the pair of cowboy boots all of 40 feet tall installed in the front of a mall in San Antonio, Texas. My favourite was probably the beautiful 70-foot tall saxophone which included the body of a Volkswagen beetle, an old surfboard and several galvanised cattle troughs. "Daddy-O" tries to make his massive sculptures from scrap materials salvaged from whatever source may be available. The wonderful swarthy Mexican waiter with his sombrero, tray of nachos and a giant chilli was largely recycled from its own ancestor, a clean-cut white guy hamburger waiter. Being an art teacher / professor he also utilises his students to help with the projects. He gets the help and they get the experience. "Daddy-O" is not your "easel and palette" artist but one who relies on welding, rigging, cranes, scaffolding, compressors, nuts and bolts, power tools and the like to build his public art. Often the common link is urethane foam, discovered by Bob in his early days at Berkeley and never forgotten. It almost defines his work.

Another link is the not infrequent outcries against his work from local councils, communities or the like. Objections are generally made when such people feel that the sculpture lowers the tone of the area or may attract "undesirables" to the locale. The legal arguments tend to claim that the objects do not comply with the many pieces of legislation applying to signs. The defence is always that they are not signs at all, and indeed bear no relationship to signs. They are demonstrably works of art, designed and erected with love and care, for the public well-being and general benefit of one and all. What judge or court would argue with that? Thus the sculptures remain in place with the blessing of the law and so what if a little bit of good publicity has been generated during the process?

Mr. Wade is the recipient of three NEA grants and has been included in Biennials in Paris, France; New Orleans, LA; and, the Whitney Museum of Art, New York, NY. Collections include Chase Manhattan Bank, AT&T, the Menil Collection, Houston and the Austin Museum Of Art. He's also got a bunch of stuff on street corners and the odd roof or two!

"Daddy-O" is a fun guy, a fun loving guy, a generous guy, a humorous author, a very unusual artist and a second cousin of cowboy Roy Rogers. Read the book and if you are in the right place (there are several) go and have a look at some of his work.
