a must have for any horse owner.......2007-10-07
No book is a subsitute for a licensed veterinarian. Now having said that...
I've had this book for years and wouldn't be without it. It got me through my first foaling and also caring for that foal (including vaccinations). While I've not read this book front to back, the signs & symptoms section in the front is invaluable. The chapters are easy to read, yet they are informative and allow you to ask intelligent questions of your veterinarian when it becomes necessary for them to be there.
My mother recently bought her first horse and this book was the first thing I told her to go get.
Should be on every horse owner's bookshelf!.......2007-07-19
This is a well-organized, easy to undertand book for all horse owners. When I saw the size, I was daunted, but have found it to be helpful in understanding and tending to health issues with our horses. This should be on every horse owners bookshelf!
Good reference book if you own a horse(s).......2007-01-12
This book is a good reference book if you own a horse(s). It is easy to read and covers a wide variety of condition and diseases.
WOW.......2006-11-24
This book is awesome. I knew nothing about my horse but now I just go to the part of the body with the problem like leg and then read all about all of the leg issues and I can determine somewhat what i think she has and call the vet if I need to. Sometimes it is just a minor thing and the book tells you how to solve it in simple ways. I think everyone should have one of these and I love mine. I was calling the vet everyday and now I can treat her myself and call only when I have to!!
A Must Have For Every Horse Owner.......2006-09-06
This Handbook is quick and easy to use. Packed with symptoms, diagnosis, and treatments, its index and contents help horse owners to quickly locate information when its needed most. Although the book only has black and white photos, they clearly demonstrate how tos, anatomy, and display common physically symptoms. The book also has charts and diagrams on every day equine topics such as worms and necessary vaccines. The last few chapters are designated to reproduction and are equipped with useful information for an owner thinking about breeding.
This is required reading for every horse owner. It helps determine whether or not you need to call the vet out for a medical problem.

Hands down, the best foaling attendant book.......2007-07-22
As far as I'm concerned, this book is required reading for all foaling attendants. Thank you Dr. Karen Hayes for writing it. The book covers a single topic, and does it better than any of the other foaling guides I've read (and I've read quite a few). Those other foaling guides are on a bookshelf; this is the book that goes in the foaling kit! It has saved our farm from disaster on more than one occasion. Dr. Hayes clearly, calmly and concisely communicates the important facts and techniques the foaling attendant needs to know. The detailed diagrams make all the difference in illuminating exactly what is going on at each stage of parturition. Detailed descriptions of what's normal and what's not, techniques for resolving problems before they become critical, and advice on what to attempt yourself and when to call the vet are invaluable. You will find other fine books about breeding, mare care and foal care, but this is the best book on the actual process of protecting and caring for your mare when it's time to deliver her foal. Dr. Hayes' more general horse care [...].is also highly recommended.
Good information, but..........2007-05-15
I would like to have more information regarding what to do next. The information was good, and the illustrations are helpful, but I needed to buy another book to help with what to do with the foal once it had arrived.
Great Book....Answered lots of questions.......2007-03-26
This book was shipped quickly and just in time....I had about 5 reading days before my first foal was born. I highly recommend this book to all breeders.
The Complete Book Of Foaling.......2007-02-11
Very informative book~! I have been foaling out mares for over 12 years and I learned quite a bit of information that I did not already realize~! An A+ book to have on hand~!
A gift for my Father.......2007-02-08
My Father liked the book very much. Could not stop reading it. He is buying a copy for my brother who actually does the foaling at the horse farm.

Customer Reviews:
GREAT PURCHASE.......2007-07-12
Product was in great condition and very informative. I am looking to buy more books by this author. Great buy and good price for amount of education it brings.
Great Resource.......2007-05-13
This book was a required purchase for a recent home practitioners course in equine Acupressure and Photonic Acupoint Therapy. I find that I am using and refering to charts from this book several times a week. It is a fantastic resource that is easy to read, easy to understands and is very helpful. After major bodywork on a horse recently I showed the book to our equine physiotherapist while we were working out the horse's treatment plan until his next visit to the horse and he thoroughly approved of my proposed treatment plan according to the charts in the book. Not just an endorsement of the quality of the information from myself and the lecturers, but also from our own equine physiotherapist.
Great.......2007-01-10
I bought this book for my girlfriend and she said that if she didn't have it she never would have passed some of her college equine acupressure classes last quarter. If she didn't have this book she said that there was no way that she would have ever gotten certified
Great assistance to energy work.......2005-10-12
A good reference book for those in an equine therapy role.
good introduction.......2004-11-12
This is an interesting and well written book on equine acupressure, and also the only on the market! Very clear and simple explanation on TCM (traditional chinese medicine) and principles behind it all.
On the other hand, the drawings are too vague to actually locate the points on your horse. They tell you to "feel it" but it isn't enough! They give you "recipes" of points for different conditions which can be fun to try but may be disapointing if you expect results. In TCM, there in not a pill or recipe for each disease like in western thinking.
Overall, an excellent introduction to the subject, but makes you hungry for more!

Customer Reviews:
Good book for someone looking for a broad range of info.......2007-09-20
A lot of information in this book. It covers just about everything. I was hoping for a little more information on feeding, but overall a good buy. One note: if you are looking for tack and riding info, this book focuses mostly on english riding. There is very little reference to western riding.
Good reference book on horses.......2007-01-12
I bought this book for my daughter who just loves horses. She really enjoys having me read it to her and looking at the pictures. It is a good general reference book for people wanting to learn more about horses.
Excellent Start.......2007-01-03
I found this book to be quite interesting, I bought it as a gift for a friend who is just getting in to horses, and looked it over before giving it. Although most of it is basic, it is not condescending towards the reader, and has many interesting facts. I even learned a few things, and have been a horse person for over 17 years. The photo's chosen to accompany the work are usually helpful, and overall this is an excellent book for someone getting started with horses.
Excellent for new riders.......2005-12-16
This is a great book for first learning about horses, how to care for them, feeding, symptoms of illnesses, and it's simple to read and understand. It gives the basics for people who might want to own a horse for the first time so that you can know what to watch out for and take the best care of your horse. I'd recommend this book for first time horse owners, and for people working with horses for the first time. It's comprehensive and gives you a lot of great info.
1 of the best out of the rest!.......2005-03-31
This horse book was awesome! I will be taking riding lessons this summer and this book helped me get a head start on horse care, like grooming, feed, tack and much, much more! It's a great book for any horse lover even if you don't have or ride a horse. This book makes it a fun, simple way to learn about how to take care of a horse! This is one of my favorite horse care guides out of all of them!
Book Description

Customer Reviews:
A worthwhile book for novices.......2001-09-03
This book is less about horse trailers than I expected. It is more about preparing the novice horse and horse-person to load & unload their horse. It does not include a comprehensive discussion on the current types (and fads) of trailers, nor does it cover the "horse's perspective" of what makes a good trailer. The small sections on trailers and tow vechicles is okay, but not nearly as comprehensive and fact-filled as "The Complete Guide to Buying, Maintaining and Servicing a Horse Trailer" by the Scheves.
I would recommend "Trailering your Horse..." as a second source for the potential trailer buyer.
2nd time around training.......2001-01-25
This is a must-have for anyone just trailering for the first time or working with a horse that was mistrained in trailering. Using Cherry's techniques has helped me to learn a great deal about my horse's previous training and given me the information needed to retrain him properly. I would recommend it for the novice or the pro!
A must have.......2000-08-02
This book helped me put together a combination of safe tow vehicle; well-equipped, comfortable horse trailer; and well-trained horse. I wish I had read it years ago. It would have saved me and my horses a lot of trouble. I have recommended this book to many people and would suggest that anyone considering the purchase of a horse trailer and/or tow vehicle read it and re-read it before talking to a single dealer/seller.
Must Have for Horse People.......2000-01-19
I found this book extremely helpful. Even though I don't trailer my horse but a couple times a year, I thought that the information provided, was layed out well and the pictures were great. Besides learning how to safely trailer my horse, this book also taught me how to control my horse from the ground using voice commands, which I found handy whether I was putting her on a trailer or not. I have all of Cherry Hill's books and the pictures always make things quick and easy to follow. What horseperson has time to read wordy, time-consuming volumes on horsecare? Pictures tell a thousand words!

A complete guide to giving healthy and productive lives to deserving horses.

Glad I found this book.......2007-05-13
I learned of this book title and author mentioned on the ASAP horse rescue website, and I'm very glad I did. A lot of careful thought goes into the decision to take on the lifelong commitment of adopting a rescued horse. This book brought up many easy to understand details I may not have considered properly before making a decision. Nothing speaks more clearly than experience. With all of the helpful references, it's a very useful and enjoyable read.
Wow, what a great read!!!.......2007-03-04
I found this book extremely informative and an enjoyable read. The author obviously writes from experience and with a desire to encourage responsible horse ownership. She offers helpful advice for first horse owners and outlines the issues involved when taking on a horse in distress. For those of us with soft hearts and a lack of good sense, when it comes to an animal is trouble, this is a handy and humorous guide that will help us do the most good where it is desprately needed.
Nicely Layed Out .......2007-01-23
This book complies basic information and is layed out well and a good starter book.. One thing I was disappointed is that it didn't really outline how to start up a Horse rescue but then again it didn't state that it did- A overall nice book !

Customer Reviews:
Very informational..........2006-06-24
... in under 100 pages!
I wish it had gotten more in depth on variously commonly kept species, and gotten more in depth about breeding...
This is a great introductory book on how to set up your aquarium for seahorses and gives a decent overview of feeding and nutrition. Supplement this book with more species specific information, which can be found online in the various forums about seahorse keeping.
Alright.......2005-03-04
This book is very small. It gives a brief description of each of the major breeds of seahorses. I was hoping for more specific and detailed information for those of us who want to learn to raise them. You also definately need an additional saltwater aquarium book.
Good info!.......2004-03-04
I've always thought seahorses were unique and would like to learn to care for them and set up my own aquarium. I never realized how many different breeds there are! This book gives a lot of information about how to care for seahorses and equipment you need. It also talks about their different habits and how to get the most out of your pet. It doesn't give a whole lot of information on caring for your salt water acquarium. It seems it's for people who already know the basics, even though it gives you good information on how to care for your seahorses in the saltwater tank. If you don't know a lot about saltwater acquariums (like me) I would suggest buying this book along with Saltwater Acquariums for Dummies. But all in all it is a good book!

Customer Reviews:
Great for GIRLS.......2007-01-03
I was interested in the book for my elementary-aged boy who is just learning to show--thank goodness we checked it out from the library first. This book has a lot of good basic information on horse shows and how to participate. While the information presented is generally gender-neutral, the book as a whole is not. The pictures almost all feature girls, the Show Story vignettes are all about girls, even the type and background colors struck my son as "girlie". This would probably be an interesting and useful book to most young equestrians--I wish they'd presented the information in a way that appealed to girls AND boys.
