Book Description
Baxter Black, the world’s bestselling cowboy poet, author of
Cactus Tracks & Cowboy Philosophy, and public radio’s favorite former large animal veterinarian, is back in the saddle with a hilarious new roundup of essays, commentaries, and campfire verse that speaks to the cowboy soul in each of us.
Drawn in part from Baxter’s wildly popular NPR commentaries and syndicated columns,
Horseshoes, Cowsocks & Duckfeet offers a generous helping of his tender yet irreverent, sage-as-sagebrush take on everything from ranching, roping, Wrangler jeans, and rodeos to weddings and romance, the love of a good dog, dancing, parenting, cooking up trouble, and talking about the weather. If you haven’t ridden with Baxter before, find out what more than a million dedicated fans are laughing about inside and outside the corral.

Baxter Black review.......2007-07-12
I personnally have not read this book. It was a gift to my son in-law. However, he LOVES it.
Never heard of Black before this book........2003-09-25
I had no idea he was on NPR. When my neighbor loaned me Horseshoes, Cowsocks and Duckfeet I was a long time getting around to picking it up. When I did it was only because I knew I needed to be able to tell the neighbor I had done so (out of courtesy).
I'm glad I did read it. Black probably isn't for everyone. There's a body of experience required to understand the point of his anecdotes and laugh at his humor. If you are person who's been around farm animals and live in a rural environment you'll probably love this book. I did.
On the other hand, if you an urbanite and have never been anything else you'll most likely consider it a waste.
The humor is dry and the anecdotes have an 'insider' quality probably unintended by the writer. The cultural abyss between urbanites and rurals grows ever wider. If this book doesn't span the gap there are still enough people with rural experience to appreciate and enjoy it.
Great Cowboy Stories.......2003-09-07
I have heard Baxter Black on the radio for years and I finally bought one of his books(I plan to buy more). Well, it was worth every one of the 60 miles I had to travel to purchase it. His stories or poems are truly laugh out loud. I liked the story about the cowboy trying to do his laundry and getting in an accident and his truck caught fire and a box of ammo was in the truck. He writes about everyday happenings that happen to plain ordinary folk. Everyone hears stories such as these, but Bax's writing style make the stories highly readable. I felt as I was reading them that he was there tell the tales. I highly recommend the book.
Not What I Thought.......2003-02-07
I have heard Baxter Black on a several occations on NPR (National Public Radio just in case you don't know. Check them out...) over the last couple of years. Most of what I did hear I liked so when I found this book I thought it would be great.
This is a collection of short, and I mean less than 2 pages short, stories as told by Black on NPR during 2001. (I think that's right...) Admittedly, something is lost in the translation from radio to book form. Baxter has a way with words and the way he says them is as meaningful a part as what he says. I was glad most stories had a brief introduction and for the glossery at the back of the book for those "non-cowboy" types like myself. I also liked the fact that I could read a story or two, put the book down and be able to come back to it a few minutes later or a week later.
I read all 75 (ish?) stories; I found my dad in one story (you know which one, Dad!), really enjoyed about 10, liked probably 40 or so and missed the point, didn't "get" or just didn't like the rest.
Perhaps it is the differences in age and sex (me being a 30-something married woman) or the generational differences or just the lifestyle differences but in some of the tales I had a hard time relating. I did, however, send the book on to my father who is older and wiser and much more learned in the ways of veterinarians, cowboys and politics and I bet he gets much more out of the book than I.
If you are already familar with Baxter's other stuff and like it then I believe you will not find any fault with this newest book. If this is your first Baxter Black book as it was mine then I suggest one of his more favored volumes to see if you like it first.

Customer Reviews:
Great book.......2007-05-07
I read his books as a teen and loved them. Bought the whole set for my grandsons, [teens]. They laughed until they cried. [so did I].
Heartwarming.......2007-04-11
This book has many heartwarming stories. It really discribes the way veterinary work was handled years ago. Mr. Herriot is a great story teller.
Wondeful and Warm.......2007-02-21
This book has been sitting on my bookshelf for a while because I passed it over for other newer books... How sorry I am I waited this long! This book is so good... the stories about the different dogs are heartwarming, and heartwrenching...they are filled with almost any dog immaginable and are a delight to read especially for dog lovers. I can't recommend this book enough...
fast and business-like.......2007-01-16
The book arrived in VERY short time, and it was
getting so close to Christmas! I wrapped and mailed
it to a cousin.
50 Warm And Comforting. Hug Your Dog!.......2006-08-13
Do you have a passion for animals? If so, you'll inhale this book. The authors heartfelt emotions can be felt on every page. He clearly adored the animals he cared for over the decades. He described the colorful European countryside, the diverse pets, and the people who owned them in fine detail. Each story is accompanied by an ink sketch that added some warm visuals. My favorite stories were of "Tricki Woo", "Judy The Nurse Dog", "Granville Bennett", and "Cigar." What was nice is that since the stories were broken up, you could not lose your place when you took a break. Yet, I only took one because this was a fast page turner. I have had several dogs in my life and these are the most honest depictions of dog behavior I have read thus far. All animal lovers will enjoy this. Time to hug my dog and adopt another.

Very entertaining "bathroom book".......2007-08-04
Goes quickly, but he writes well and if you're a cat owner, you'll really develop a rapport with the cat stories in here. Not just for "cat ladies" - my husband picked it up and couldn't put it down.
10 Stars.......2007-08-03
Look you haven't heard a story read until you've heard it read by Christopher Timothy!!!! This guy could make a phone book interesting to hear read! These stories are great! They'll have you laughing and crying! So becareful if you listen in your car ;0) I was driving my 18 wheeler down a rural road in Luisiana getting all teary eyed! Scary thought, right?
One extraordinary read..........2007-06-19
James Herriot writes of his veterinary experiences as no one else could. Full of humor, sometimes sadness but always spellbinding and interesting. I could not put this book down.
Lovely surprise.......2007-06-02
When I sent away for this book I had no idea that it would be so beautifully illustrated in full colour. It is a real little treasure of cat stories told in a way that only James Herriott can. I loved it.
Olly and Ginny.......2006-06-05
We loved this book so much, we named our two cats Olly and Ginny. 'Nuff said.

Superb book for animal lovers of all ages.......2000-06-19
I first read this book about 30 years ago and I have re-read it annually every year since. It tells the story of a sickly English boy who's only playmates are his animals. He grows up to become a veterinarian and the book follows his early years in the profession on through his adventures during the WWII bombings of London. He and his staff rescue the abandoned animals of the city and give them refuge on his country farm. He also "boards" the pets of people fleeing the city until after the war. Any animal lover can't help but fall in love with the many four legged characters that are a part of this story. I assume Mr. Lloyd-Jones is no longer alive but he is a man I would love to have sat down to dinner with. I could have listened to his life story forever.

This book is very important for the exotic animal practicioner. The division in species makes very easy to find the information required, and the charts are very useful. The book contains only necessary information, so the text is short and specific. Another good factor is the size and cover of the book, easy to carry.

Book Description
When a woman rushes into Rachel Goddard's animal hospital with a dog struck by a car during a thunderstorm, her terrified tot loses sight of her mother and screams, "Mommy! I want Mommy!" Instantly Rachel remembers a day when her baby sister Michelle uttered the same cry while thunder crashed and rain poured down on them. Like a fragment from a nightmare, the experience leaves Rachel shaken and she doesn't understand its meaning or the anguish it stirs up in her. She seeks answers but learns nothing from Michelle or from Judith, their loving but manipulative mother, a psychologist who is only too happy to have her adult daughters still living in her elegant Tudor house outside Washington, DC. But theirs is a house of secrets where Judith's unspoken rules forbid questions about the family history or the daughters' long-dead father. The heartbreaking truth Rachel uncovers will shatter her world and force her to make an unthinkable choice.

I bought this book based on the strong posted reviews - what a mistake! Poor plot and character development made this nearly impossible to finish. When I did, I wodnered why I had wasted my time hoping the book would somehow earn the time invested reading it.
Reviewed by Ali Jenkins and Barb Radmore.......2007-06-17
The Heart of the Moon is a compelling debut by Sandra Parshall which hooks the reader from the first page. Rachel Goddard, a young veterinarian, has overwhelming yet confusing reaction after watching a toddler in her office, crying and screaming for her mommy. This scene seems like it is reminiscent of one she experienced in her childhood but it is nothing she can place in her concrete memory. Rachel remembers bits and pieces of such a scene, but a feeling tell her there is more. And the feeling will not go away. As Rachel keeps digging trying to remember her childhood more questions than answers arise.
Rachel wants answers from her mom about what happened but her mother doesn't want to discuss the past. As a psychologist, Rachel's mother has always been the controller, the perfect parent who expects nothing less of those around her. Rachel enlists the help of a friend of her mother's from the past but he doesn't want to betray Rachel's mother's trust or friendship. He also isn't sure he knows exactly what transpired himself. Her boss, fellow veterinarian Luke Campbell , encourages her to delve into the mystery of what might of occurred to cause her feelings. But Rachel is up against the desire of her mother and her beloved sister to leave the past alone. To make matters worse, the mutual attraction between Rachel and Luke is not appreciated by her mother who has taken an active dislike to him. Her sister, whom she has been close to all her life, is becoming distant and distinctly unsupportive of her quest for answers.
The Heart of The Moon is a page turning mystery as one tries to figure out what secrets Rachel's mother is hiding from her and her sister. In this psychological thriller Sandra Parshall has created characters that sizzle and steam, not women easily forgotten. Using the emotion between a mother and her grown daughter, the eternal struggle to grow up and separate from a parent as the launches this plot's suspense to a place we can all understand. It examines the bonds between mother and daughter, the ties that hold sisters together and the knots that can become hopelessly entangled. The ending, both explosive and heart wrenching, is as powerful as it is unexpected.
Sandra Parshall won an Agatha for Best First Novel for The Heat of the Moon. Readers will easily see why she won this one the honor and agree that it is well deserved. She has now also written Disturbing the Dead, again featuring veterinarian Rachel Goddard. It will be interesting to watch if Parshall continues to develop the character of Rachel even more in the future.
No Wonder It Won an Agatha!.......2007-06-04
Great book - held me from beginning to end. The characters are so finely drawn that they cease to be characters and become people you know. The setting is so realistic I was surprised to find I was in my home and not in McLean, VA. Seamless plotting brought me into the story. I was sorry to finish the book, the writing has a pristine quality that made me want to pick it up again as soon as I finished. Not only for the pleasure of the story, but for the pleasure of the way Parshall uses language. Looking forward to more from this author.
Pleasing suspense novels.......2006-12-11
Dr. Rachel Goddard is a likeable protagonist -- she's a young veterinarian who cares for cats and dogs as well as wild hawks and possums. She lives with her younger sister Michelle, a psychology student, and her mother Judith, a renowned psychologist, in a stately, large house in McLean, Virginia, just outside of Washington, D.C.
Life is good. Romance blossoms in Rachel's life. She loves her profession. Co-workers and friends like her. Then Rachel begins to experience disturbing memories. She lost her father at an early age and has difficulty remembering much about him. A desperate need soon arises in her to know more and she begins to investigate. Her mother Judith does her best to forestall Rachel's curiosity, but just why. . .?
This well-written, tightly-plotted debut novel moves at a jaunty clip. The mystery about Rachel's dark past unravels with satisfying twists and turns. Her work as a veterinarian adds considerable depth to the main character while the Washington, D.C. setting is vivid.
The Heat of the Moon.......2006-11-10
Very good debut! Will look forward to seeing more from this author.

It was the first James Herriot book I read, and I think the best. It was funny at times and serious at others. It introduced me to a English Countryside vet's life. Sqeamish people might want to skip over parts. (He is a vet!) But over all, I really think this book is a wonderful must read.

Book Description
Few authors in memory have delighted readers around the world as thoroughly as the beloved veterinarian James Herriot. And with his recent volumes of hugely popular illustrated tales – James Herriot’s Cat Stories and James Herriot’s Favourite Dog Stories – his name has been introduced to a whole new generation of readers. Now, this gorgeous new collection brings together ten of his best-loved stories celebrating all the creatures in his wonderful world – creatures bright and beautiful, great and small.
Here are lambs, horses, cows, dogs, even a whimsical pig or two, along with their colourful human counterparts – all brought vividly to life by Herriot’s storytelling magic. From a prickly horse young James encountered early in his veterinary-school experience, through Dorothy the goat – star of the entrancing holiday tale “There’s Christmas – and Christmas”– we are reacquainted with many of the most charming members of Herriot’s Yorkshire menagerie. Once again illuminated by the radiant watercolours of Lesley Holmes, each of Herriot’s stories captures the kind of warmth and humour that comes with old, familiar friendship. With a special introduction by Herriot’s own son, Jim, the stories in this bright new collection will charm readers of any age.

alicia sirois.......2007-01-04
I liked this book because my favorite thing to do is take care of horses and other animals. I also want to be an equestrian vet which means horse vet.
This book is about how to take care of large animals in the beginning it tells you about how veterinarians have to travel to their patients and it explains what a large animal veterinarian is and what type of animals they take care of : cows, horses, sheep and, pigs.
This book is an information book so I would recommend this book to people who want to be a vet and take care of animals. I wouldn't recommend this book to people who want to take care of small animal such as dogs and cats or other small animals because this book is about large animals.
