I found the book to be an easy-to-read brochure that gets right to the point with clear, concise suggestions for training your dog.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!!.......2007-08-31

Don't let the size of this book turn you away - this book has all the information you need to greatly improve your relationship with your dog. I highly recommend this book to anyone that has a difficult dog, but people with obedient dogs can benefit as well.

This book was well written, short and to the point. I followed her advice and now my dogs listen to me and I no longer yell or pull on the leash!

5 out of 5 stars A must have for anyone with a dog.......2007-07-09

This book saved my relationship with my two "kids" - it is written in language that is very easy to understand and presents principles in a way that anyone can appreciate and practice. I believe that reading this book taught me how to live with and relate to my four legged family in a way that truly allows us to live together in a harmony that we had not known previously and cherish every day since. Highly recommended for anyone who has a canine companion, whether it is a new relationship or one that has gone on for a while but has become a strain for any member of the family.

5 out of 5 stars Get Double Pleasure from this book!.......2007-06-13

I enjoyed this practical little booklet, but it is twice as useful and entertaining if you read it aloud and substitute the word "man" [or a man's name] for the word "dog" [or a dog's name]. I gave it to my sister when she adopted one of my foster dogs, and we had a jolly and educational time reading it "both ways". Anything by Patricia McConnell is a "must-read" for those of us who love interaction with our dogs!

Book Description

Bestselling author Cesar Millan takes his principles of dog psychology a step further, showing you how to develop the calm-assertive energy of a successful pack leader and use it to improve your dog’s life–and your own.

Filled with practical tips and techniques as well as real-life success stories from his clients (including the Grogan family, owners of Marley from Marley & Me) and his popular television show Dog Whisperer with Cesar Millan, Cesar helps you understand and read your dog’s energy as well as your own so that you can move beyond just correcting behavioral issues and take your connection with your dog to the next level.

The principles of calm-assertive energy will help you become a better pack leader in every area of your life, improving your relationships with friends, family, and coworkers.

In addition, Cesar addresses several important issues for the first time, including what you need to know about the major dog behavior tools available and the difference between “personality” and “instability.”

Ultimately, what emerges from Be the Pack Leader are both happier dogs and happier, more centered owners.

5 out of 5 stars Another success for Cesar and more wisdom for the rest of us........2007-10-04

Cesar Millan and Melissa Jo Peltier have done it again. In Be the Pack Leader: Use Cesar's Way to Transform Your Dog...and Your Life, the dog whisperer and the writer have put their talents together once more to provide dog lovers and owners with a valuable resource. This resource helps us build and maintain a harmonious relationship with a balanced animal and, perhaps, even with each other. In that vein, Cesar speaks to four aspects of human nature that need to be in balance: intellect, emotion, spirituality, and instinct, and how we have lost touch with number four. Developing a balanced relationship with our dog(s) helps us to regain the instinctual side of ourselves buried so deeply within.

In his acknowledgements, Cesar also speaks to the ability of women to impart a calm-assertive influence on the world's inhabitants. That was nice to read. In his introduction, Cesar states that he has continued to learn from dogs and people and has taken to heart the criticisms of his first book. As a result, this book includes easily remembered practical tips for working with dogs and a step-by-step reference (at the end) for specific situations, in addition to more of Cesar's innate wisdom when it comes to dogs and their behavior. (I especially liked the Rudyard Kipling quote near the beginning of the book. Be sure to read it.)

Part I deals with balancing our dogs and Part II deals with balancing ourselves. Cesar presents case studies of the relationship between various dogs and their humans, including that of the Grogan family (bestseller: Marley and Me). Then there's the Tycoon and his seriously out-of-balance dogs, Willy and Kid; and Bob Kettle, a pro who helps domesticated dogs get back in touch with their natural instincts when it comes to snakes...in other words, to stay away from them; and the book's author, Melissa Jo Peltier, makes an appearance as an example of how one's nervous energy can set dogs into a frenzy. As a skilled writer, she was able to describe, in her own words, how she experienced the situation in which she found herself.

There is much to be learned from Cesar's books and his television show, The Dog Whisperer. Those who have been lucky enough to see him in person have an additional dimension in which to experience and appreciate his talents. In the two years I've known of him, several friends and family members have put his methods to work with great success. He has become one of my heroes.

5 out of 5 stars Pack Leader ~ the next level fod dogs and humans!.......2007-10-02

Chapter 7 in this book, relates the story of how just the first few lessons were enough to help me rescue a "red-zone dog" trapped in a traffic signal maintenance yard that terrified about 75 men to the point that they had called animal control to come put the dog down.

Risk management, safety and environmental health, have all been my career for 30 years. I knew there was nothing to risk by trying this new fellow's approach to problem dogs, (except being exposed to the 105-degree Arizona heat mid afternoon). I had tried Cesar's way ~sorta, off and on without much success - on my old dogs that I had humanized for 10 years, the way I had been raised to be with my dogs since childhood. With this rescue, if I didn't succeed, it wasn't a matter of him barking too long or getting my food, it would cost him his life.

Cesar's way turned him in days to one of the best dogs I ever had in my life. I had turned to a yahoo email list for help. When the owner needed to leave, I volunteered to take it over. This began the best adventure, in my life of wonderful adventures of opening doors to have thousands - yes thousands of people helped and helping each other to walk Cesar's way (Over 65,000 messages in just two years - open archives for anyone to review, current membership at 2300 with over 1000 more who came in, solved their problems and left) . People who had exhausted local sources for help or support began reaching out to each other through that email list

The original book "Cesar's Way", talks about the mechanics and philosophy of how Cesar's way can successfully used people under a complete variety of environments and life challenges.

This new book, "Be the Pack Leader - shows the underlying foundation of the WHY that Cesar's way can work from the first moments on.

Because dogs do NOT lie,
because they show us the truth of what is going on under the masks that humans put on for other humans so much from childhood, that we forget the mask is there,
Through this book's principles, we can learn how to learn from what our dog show us that we are really doing in our relationships, and then apply that understanding when we engage with others.

All relationships are about power - our family, friends, co-workers, clients. We will either learn to work WITH power, or we will be at the effect of power throughout our lives! "Be the Pack Leader", to can be find the holes, gaps and Achilles heels in our dog/human relationships. Those lessons can then be used to change our human/human relationships to be more fulfilling.

With self-knowledge comes power. Chapter 8 talks about "Our Four-legged Healers. Many hearts and souls are finding healing because of the work Cesar is doing.
Thousands of dogs are being saved that otherwise would be abandoned or euthanized as being hopeless. How can anyone turn their back on this kind of information and say that it is bad?

If anyone wants to hear what happened as "the rest of the story", to Chapter 7 and the quantum leap it provided for me, find the yahoo Dog Whisperer Fan email list (third largest in obedience and training section) and check the archives under my yahoo name, siegeanderson, or yahoo me and I will tell you which post it is!

I am also creating a video review of the successes of Cesar way in my life so far that I have experienced, which should be uploaded here within a day of this review.

5 out of 5 stars A MUST for dog owners.......2007-10-11

I thought I had the best dog in the world until we got another little puppy. Then, my dog became very territorial with his toys. Wanting the two dogs to love each other forever, I got this book because it was recommended by the local German Shepherd rescue.
Most of the things in the book I had already done with my first dog, but the writers explained why my dog was acting this way with his toys and how to correct it.
My two dogs share toys now and don't fight (other that puppy play).
Sometimes it is hard to 'think like a dog', but you have to in order to communicate with yours. These writers must be part-dog, and the book is very effective.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book .......2007-09-03

This is an excellent book for anyone who owns a dog. It gives you good insight into the heirarchy of the dog world and helps you understand how the dog thinks and should help everyone in the training of their dog.

5 out of 5 stars Slender volume packed with information.......2006-12-22

I have had dogs my entire life. Unfortunately, I never realized how poor my understanding of dog behavior was. (I currently have 4 dogs--the introduction of an exuberant 1/2 American bull dog/beagle/lab mix has required the tutorial!).

I would recommend that every dog owner read this volume. In fact, no one should even own a dog without understanding and implementing these basic concepts. (I know that sounds didactic; however, I would humbly submit to being called on this by any who have read no books on dog behavior and who, having read this book, finds that my comment rings false.) I read Cesar Milan's book, but felt that I was only introduced to concepts with no meaningful means to engage the concepts--more autobiographical. This book not only introduced the concepts but provided specific guidance on how to implement.

This is not a book solely for problem dogs. Rather, it is a book for any person or family that wants to enjoy problem-free habitation with a dog. Providing for our dogs confident leadership, clear boundaries, safety and comfort are our responsibilities as dog owners. You will feel well-equipped to carry out these responsibilities by starting here.

4 out of 5 stars good but not great.......2006-02-01

This book is generally good and effective at explaining a good relationship between a dog and his or her owner. But, there are a few things that i have learned from my experience in numerous training classes and from working a boarding kennel that I disagree with.

4 out of 5 stars Leader of the Pack.......2005-08-02

I thought this was an excellent book. My boyfriend and I adopted a jack russell terrier. It was an older dog with some pretty severe dominance/aggression issues. This book was recommended twice to me. I think the two biggest reasons that this dog is still in our family is because of the size of our hearts and this book! We learned that our dog will always have problems, but we also learned that he can be controlled. He still slips into dominant/aggressive mode, but with the book in mind, we put him(humanely)right back into his place.

Caroline Knapp is head over heels in love--not with a human being, but with her mixed-breed dog, Lucille. From the moment Lucille first locked eyes with Knapp through the bars of an animal shelter cage, the intelligent, pointy-eared mutt began to transform Knapp's life. Reeling from the deaths of both her parents, a breakup with a long-term boyfriend, and her newly won sobriety after a 20-year battle with the bottle (which was skillfully chronicled in a previous memoir, Drinking: A Love Story), Knapp found in Lucille not only companionship, but "consistency, continuity, connection. In a word, love." Although she doesn't regard Lucille as a replacement for alcohol and lost loved ones, Knapp does believe "that in loving her I have had that sense of being filled anew and essentially redirected, an old identity shattered and a new one emerging in its stead." In Pack of Two Knapp, with the help of dog psychiatrists, trainers, breeders, and owners, explores the partnership between human and dog and the mysteries of the canine mind--how dogs love, how they think, and how they see human beings. And despite her findings that the dog will remain essentially "mysterious ... unknowable," Knapp is ultimately at peace with this, still devouring the moments when dog and human can "transcend the language barrier" to "understand what the other wants and feels." This book pays homage to the wonderful and complex relationship between one woman and her dog. --Naomi Gesinger

Book Description

At the age of 36, Caroline Knapp, author of the acclaimed bestseller Drinking:A Love Story, found herself confronted with a monumental task: redefining her world.  She had faced the loss of both her parents, given up a twenty-year relationship with alcohol, and, as she writes, "I was wandering around in a haze of uncertainty, blinking up at the biggest questions: Who am I without parents and without alcohol? How to form attachments, and where to find comfort, in the face of such daunting vulnerability?"  An answer materialized in the most unlikely form: that of a dog.  Eighteen months to the day after she quit drinking, Knapp stumbled upon an eight-week-old puppy at a local animal shelter, took her home, and named her Lucille.  Now two years old, Lucille has become a central force in Knapp's life: "In her," she writes,  "I have found solace, joy, a bridge to the world."

Caroline Knapp has been celebrated as much for her fresh insight into emotional and psychological issues as she has been for her gifts as a writer.  In Pack of Two, she brings the same perception and talent to bear on the rich, complicated terrain of human-animal relationships.  In addition to mining her own experience with Lucille, Knapp speaks to a wide variety of dog people--from animal behaviorists and psychologists to other owners whose dogs have deeply affected their lives--about this emotionally complex, sometimes daunting, often profoundly healing alliance.  Throughout, she explores the shift in canine roles from working partners to intimate companions and looks, too, at how this new kinship, this wordless bond, becomes a template for what we most desire ourselves.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best dog memoirs ever!.......2007-06-05

Before Marley there was Lucille. This is a funny, informative memoir which will, alas, will empty your tear ducts. Knapp was a terrific writer and what a tragedy it is to have lost her. Especially at such a young age.

5 out of 5 stars go, fetch!!!! immediatly!!!.......2007-03-05

maybe like some people here says this is not a book about training, in the kind of manual to accomplish your dog to do some stuff; neither is the kind of book like the Konrad Lorenz, 'When the man find the dog' or like Desmond Morris about the same theme. And one has to be thankful for it. This book is about the core of the relation, the love and the bond, you can have with your dog. Maybe something not easily understood to the non-dog passerby, nevertheless for us the dog lovers is a tender colection of ideas and reflections on the subject. Even so, there is a research behind it, and some hard facts coming with a decent book list at the end. If sometimes lacks of discipline like some other person says here, well, i really like my love affairs without boot camp, laws and restriction, and even when my dog is perfectly trained, I really like to spoil myself letting me love her without boundaries and restraint, she fills every aspect of my life, and she makes me... human. Long live to Caroline Knapp, and now she is not here anymore, lets laugh and cry with she and lucille, and share that perfect aeternal bond with our dogs. ...And yes my dog is lying here in my bed, quite undisciplined but warm and perfect... if anyone complains, I would not change my bed with 'Amelia' for any human of any form whatsoever.... guau guau guau

5 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE BES DOG BOOKS I'VE READ.......2006-05-01

This is my first book review and, WOW! did I pick a great one to start off with.

You'll have to pardon me if I'm over-enthusiastic with my praise, but I'm telling it as it is.

From page one, I totally related to this lady (Caroline Knapp), from the time she was 'just thinking' about getting a dog, to going to the Dog pound to 'just look', to 'should I adopt or not?' to 'well, maybe' to finally getting the pooch.

I think I even got the same Mutt breed that she adopted.
The Pound informed me that my Sara was a GSD/Mix. Ms Knapp adopted a Shepherd/Mix. She says this is Dog Pound code for
"We really don't know."

I became so engrossed with the human/dog connection we have with our soul mates, that I looked Caroline Knapp up on GOOGLE.

Sad, it is to say, I found out that she died of cancer at the age of 42.

Her loyal companion, Lucille, was there at her bedside, faithful to the end.

4 out of 5 stars How we relate to dogs and other friends.......2006-04-11

This book is for anyone who wants to consider reasons why they love what they love.

The author's independent view gives the type of different perspective many of us read books for. If she was only super smart, & told us primarily things we already knew, that would probably not be worth reading. Ms. Knapp is so much more.

I admire Ms. Knapp's intellect, uncommon perspective, & incredible focus on a particular subject matter. Anyone who reads this book is going to understand more about why certain people go to such amazing lengths, and spend so much time, money, and energy on their dogs. Her writing style is great. Her lack of repitition in her vocabulary, sentence structure, and thought presentation is remarkable. This book is not just about dogs. It is an interesting read for people who want to understand the thought processes of people who: 1) love dogs, or 2) are neurotic, or 3) have human relationship commitment issues, or 4) struggle with their human family.

Ms. Knapp's focus & examination of the ideas and perceptions that can lead to the creation of strong bonds with dogs is fascinating. She gives the reader a greater appreciation, like a wine expert might teach someone more to appreciate about wine.

Ms. Knapp loved dogs for their tolerance, faithfulness, lack of artificial baggage, and accepting accomodation. She found qualities in her dog that she did not perceive in the humans she encountered.

She asserts that relationships with dogs are occasionally a substitute for other things; but more often, they are beautiful on their own merits and do not find value by being a substitute for something else.

Dogs can't use words. They are beautiful because they must learn to listen and communicate to the people around them largely based on non-verbal cues.

Very sadly, Ms. Knapp died at too young of an age. If she were alive, I'd write her a letter of gratitude and ask her many questions.

5 out of 5 stars A distinctive view on dog-"owner" relationships.......2005-12-23

On beginning my reading of this book, I viewed it as about the dog-"owner" relationship from a "woman's" perspective. As I proceeded through it, I came to see that it had a lot to say to me (male of my species). Perhaps only a woman would be willing to write about the relationship in the the late Ms. Knapp did. What she writes about is particularly important to all of those for whom a dog seems to be a little more important to their emotional lives than they expected before getting one. I have read very few good books about dogs as pets. This one is both good and somewhat distinctive.

At our local dog park, I have seen many good and bad dog-"owner" relationships and found that Ms. Knapp offered insights on almost all of them. Most importantly I found she gave me insights into the relationships that my soon-to-be former wife and I have with our three (!!!) poodles and thereby insight into our troubled relationship as well.

5 out of 5 stars Family Interaction.......2001-03-28

This is the sort of fun read and reference which can involve the entire family, keep kid(s) busy, and keep the family pet amused. By using the book as a project, the kids can be involved, take responsibility by planning out their activites, and spend quality time with their pet. And finally, we were able to read the book together instead of turning on the tube! This is one book we keep out for everyone to use!

5 out of 5 stars Fun Stuff = Great Stuff!.......2001-03-06

My family and I thoroughly enjoyed Fun Stuff by Nancy Furstinger. It's easy and fun to read and has a lot of great activities for kids and their dogs (or is it "dogs and their kids"?). We haven't tried all of the activities, of course, and we only tried one of the recipes so far, but it's a book we continue to use and refer back to. We're still working our way through the web sites, which gave us even more information! The "K-911" first-aid kit was a great idea and we now have one safely under our sink. A great book! Highly recommended!
