Book Description
Ask someone who works with horses how best to communicate with a balky colt and she will tell you that horses do not respond to human cajoling. To be successful the human must understand and work with, not against, the horse’s instincts, needs, and fears. When a trainer resorts to human teaching methods — reasoning, begging, bribing, even hugging and kissing — the horse will become confused and unable to respond appropriately. But if horses are treated respectfully with methods they understand, everyone involved — animal and human — will be happier, safer, and more productive.
Horse trainer and instructor Cherry Hill believes that every human/horse relationship benefits from a greater human understanding of what motivates horses, how they experience the world, what makes them happy, and what worries them. Journey through the equine mind with Hill as she explores all that makes a horse tick. How do his basic needs dictate his behavior and mood? What touches and tastes appeal to his senses? How does his “flight or fight” instinct dictate his response to sudden movements?
Hill offers interactive experiments — fun for both horse and human — that bear out her findings on horse behavior. And her final chapter presents simple training methods that draw from the insights and information presented throughout the book.

Winifred's View.......2007-09-28
I have purchased many books on horses and riding, but Cherry Hill's "..Think Like a Horse" explained and reinforced so much more about what I was questioning and experiencing with my horse. It is certainly a wonderful resourse for "newbies" like myself who have discovered the wonders of horse at a late age, but I believe it also holds a lot of insights for the more experienced riders/owners who care about knowing their horses at least as well as they ride/show them. I was looking for something to explain a particular change in my horse's behavior (after eye exams, blood work etc turned up negative) and I believe I found it in Ms. Hill's book. Winnie and I thank her for sharing her knowledge and wisdom in a book packed with information.
If I were a horse.......2007-09-20
If I were a horse, I would want this author to be my "keeper." This book is written with keen insight and clearly communicated to anyone who owns a horse, rides a horse or has dreamed of galloping across a great meadow as free as the wind. I highly recommend this book along with another book that embraces horses: It's called On the Trail of the Pony Express and the book follows Cherokee author, Jerry Ellis, for 2,000 miles along the Pony Express Trail by foot, horse, covered wagon and canoe from Missouri to California.
Wonderful book!.......2007-07-15
This is a delightful book full of information and insight from an often under-appreciated trainer. Cherry Hill covers everything from development to grooming to behavior to training.
Information which is normally strewn across several horse books comes together in this single volume. This is a must-read for every horse enthusiast.

A must read for ANYONE who owns horses..........2001-08-26
I highly recommend this book to anyone in the horse world. I own a small horse farm, and I have learned the hard way that you need to be very aware of equine law before you sell a horse (or board, etc). This is kind of a thin book, but it covers a lot and was easy to read. It's a small investment that may save lots of money and heartache in the long run! So no matter if you have one horse, or a hundred, you really should read this helpful little book!
Wordy but wonderful!.......2001-06-06
Very practical, through book for the equine professional. Outlines the responsiblities and liablities in just about any equine setting... GREAT book to have on hand!

this is a thorough study of the horse's back. Every bone, every muscle and the functions are explained in this book. Also discussed are ways to keep the back functioning properly. The author explains what to look for from the horse's body actions that might hint to pain from the back. It's a good book and one that you can read again about eery 6 months to a year...for a refresher.

Dr. Redden's detailed account is the first American book on laminitis, a disease that can strike any horse-seemingly without cause. Secretariat, one of the most famous Thoroughbred racehorses of all time, died of complications from laminitis. Based on his many years' experience, Dr. Redden offers clues to help recognize and treat the disease, and advice on shoeing the laminitic horse.

None Better.......2006-06-02
Actually I have not read the book, but am familar with the Dr. Reddin. In short, they do not come any better. Many years ago he tried to help my hunter. In the end it just did not work out, as sometimes happens.
He is used to working on VERY expensive horses. But he still tried to help my "back yard" hunter.
I sincerely feel he knows more about this terrible disease than just about any other source. Truly a dedicated and caring vet!

Understanding Laminitis.......2006-03-17
I recommend this book for anyone who has a horse suffering from this dreaded disease, laminitis. We all feel it is the end when our horse / pony is diagnosed with this as our vets do not give us much hope, but this book not only gave me hope to continue with a treatment programme, but pointed out which methods would best suit her degree of laminits and 3 months down the line I have a pony well on the road to recovery. DEFINITELY a must for people with horses / ponies prone too this disease.

Book Description
The economic health of many horse farms is directly related to the health and well-being of their stallions. An essential guide for the stallion owner or handler, Understanding the Stallion provides a complete overview of reproduction in the stallion, details the anatomy and physiology of the stallion, and addresses factors in breeding and stallion management. Dr. Squires is supervisor of the Equine Reproductive Laboratory at Colorado State University.
Customer Reviews:
Understanding The Stallion - Technical but not practical.......2001-01-17
Understanding the Stallion is a fairly short, detailed book, bursting with information pertaining to stallion management and breeding. This book does not, however, go into the mental aspects of the stallion in much depth, as I was hoping it would. Also, the book fails to take into account the fact that every stallion has his own personality, and that they each require a different approach, whether this is in the breeding shed or in the stable.
This book cannot be flawed for its scientific and technical statements. The descriptions of the stallion's anatomy are very detailed, as are the diagrams, and the text is phrased carefully so that the author can be understood, even to the least scientifically inclined person.
This book is a worthwhile purchase for the first time stallion owner, or to anyone that is considering buying a stallion for the first time, either for competition or breeding. More experienced horse people may find the book a little light on practical information, but nonetheless useful. A recommended read to all stallion owners and breeders.
Book Description
No hoof, no horse. Widely published equine authority Heather Smith Thomas explains exactly why this is in her latest book, Understanding Equine Hoof Care. Her comprehensive approach covers how domestication has compromised the equine hoof and offers instruction on how horses' feet can be returned to a more natural, and healthy, state, through conscientious care. Thomas describes the complete anatomy of the hoof and explains methods to both prevent and treat common foot ailments. These methods include proper shoeing for usage, daily cleaning, trimming, and knowing your horse well enough to spot any deviations that can indicate potential problems. Understanding Equine Hoof Care provides the reader with a wealth of information on how to maintain hoof health, treat minor problems, and know when it's time to work with a vet or farrier.

understanding equine hoof care.......2007-01-23
I was very happy with the way the book was written from start to finish, it gave me alot of information and very easy to understand. It was agreat book.
Good reference book........2006-10-01
I got this book because I wanted to understand more about hoof care, as at the barn I was at there were many discussions on whether a horse should be barefoot or wear shoes. I think this book is good at covering the basics of horse hoof care but does spend more time on the topic of shoes and types etc. I only gave it 4 stars because I would have liked more information on keeping your horse barefoot. But for a first basic book I think it is a good first step and gives you the basics so you can decided what you want to look further into.

The ONLY Way!.......2005-10-27
A Way With Horses expresses everything your horse wishes he could say to you about how he feels, thinks & acts & why he does the things he does. This book is particularly attractive to those who would like to learn more about the natural ways of horses but find American colloquialism difficult to comprehend & identify with. It's a celebration of a global shift in attitude towards horses.
The photography is spectacular! They say a picture tells 1,000 words & this is true in this case.
A beautiful read.......2005-10-25
This book is definately a must-read for all those who have ever or will ever have contact with the equine species. The horse - human relationship is beautifully portrayed by way of photos and text that reflect the Author's lifelong relationship with horses. This is far more than a coffee table read - it is packed with information that is easy to digest and makes the reader rethink their "way with horses".
Stunning Photos & easy to follow text.......2005-10-21
This book is a 'must read' for anyone who is coming back into horses, has never had them or "knows all there is to know"!! It is an easy to read and follow text with excellent photos which captivate the reader from start to finish. I have had horses for years and learned new things and was reminded of things I should have remembered. In other words it helped me to look at things in a new light and and gave me another perspective on reading our much loved companions body language, to understand and not chastise for their way of doing things. This book will appeal to all diciplines, not any one in particular. Highly recommended.
** A MUST FOR EVERYONE INTERESTED IN HORSES!! **.......2005-10-21
This book is about empathy and understanding between horses and humans. Things that many of us know but many more need to know - that horses have feelings and emotions which will predict their wellbeing and active healthy life. Read, discover and be enlightened. A must for everyone interested in horses.
