In 2000, novelist and poet James McManus was sent to Las Vegas, innocently enough, by Harper's magazine to write a story about the World Series of Poker held annually at Binion's Horseshoe. But then, as so often happens on trips to Sin City, something kind of ... happened. Rather than becoming an objective report, McManus's article evolved into a memoir as he put his entire advance on the line, got lucky with his cards and won a spot in the competition, and came much closer than anyone expected to winning the darn thing. The result, Positively Fifth Street, is just as dazzling, exciting, and disturbing as Vegas itself.
McManus details his battles not only against his opponents but also against "Bad Jim," the portion of his own personality that needs to get in on a poker game in spite of both common and fiscal sense. Besides telling his own story, he relates the considerably more unpleasant tale of Ted Binion, whose grisly death was blamed on Binion's former stripper-girlfriend and her ex-linebacker beau. In the hands of a lesser author, the pursuit of these separate through lines of poker and the seedy personal lives of wealthy casino heirs may have lead readers to wish the author had picked just one subject. But under McManus's careful watch, they're really pretty similar: steeped in adrenaline, mystery, deception, and skating on thrillingly thin ice. Each story underscores the other, a neat little "narrative as metaphor" device, while also painting a vivid picture of Vegas casino life. Poker, as anyone who has lost at it will tell you, is an intricate game and it's nice to see a top-notch author and player relate its finer points in an entertaining style that will appeal even to non-players. The author's hilariously self-aware and at times self-loathing style make Positively Fifth Street a fun read. But beyond that, his account of nearly winning the biggest poker tournament in the world and subsequently watching as the verdicts are announced for Binion's accused murderers makes for a great story. Even if it wasn't the one he was sent there to write. --John Moe
Book Description
In the spring of 2000, Harper's Magazine sent James McManus to Las Vegas to cover the World Series of Poker, in particular the progress of women in the $23 million event, and the murder of Ted Binion, the tournament's prodigal host, purportedly done in by a stripper and her boyfriend. But when McManus arrives, the lure of the tables compels him to risk his entire Harper's advance in a long-shot attempt to play in the tournament himself. This is his deliciously suspenseful account of the tournament-the players, the hand-to-hand combat, his own unlikely progress in it-and the delightfully seedy carnival atmosphere that surrounds it. Positively Fifth Street is a high-stakes adventure and a terrifying but often hilarious account of one man's effort to understand what Edward O. Wilson has called 'Pleistocene exigencies'-the eros and logistics of our competitive instincts.

In the spring of 2000, Harper's Magazine sent James McManus to Las Vegas to cover the World Series of Poker--in particular, the mushrooming progress of women in the $23 million event, and the murder of Ted Binion, the tournament's prodigal host, purportedly done in by a stripper and her boyfriend with a techniques so outre it took a Manhattan pathologist to identify it. Whether a jury would convict the attractive young couple was another story altogether. But when McManus sets foot in town, the lure of the tables is too strong: he proceeds to risk his entire Harper's advance in a long-shot attempt to play in the tournament himself. Only with actual experience at the table (he tells his skeptical wife) can he capture the hair-raising subtleties of the kind of poker that determines the world champion. The heart of the book is his deliciously suspenseful account of the tournament itself--the players, the hands, and his own unlikely progress in it. Written in the tradition of The Gambler and The Biggest Game In town, Positively Fifth Street is a high-stakes adventure, and a terrifying but often hilarious account of one man's effort to understand what Edward O. Wilson has called "Pleistocene exigencies"--the eros and logistics of out primary competitive instincts.
Customer Reviews:
Not what I expected.......2007-10-03
If you look at the reviews for this book, you'll see a wide range of opinions. From 1-star all the way up to 5-stars. I believe the reason for the wide range is because the book cover and descriptions (including the back) fails to manage the reader's expectations. Similar to many other reviewers, I expected a book 100% about poker and related topics. However, it's really 60% about Ted Binion's murder, and 40% about poker. I did realize that Binion's murder was a topic in the book, but I though it was just a backdrop for the poker story. The murder almost dominates the book. If I had that 60/40 expectation I think I would've enjoyed the book more. So i penalize it 1 star because it didn't meet my expectations. I also subtract 1 more star because the author goes off-topic way too often. Other reviewers rant on how off-topic the book goes, so i don't need to again. 3 stars.
Good, but about 100 pages too long.......2007-07-27
This is a very unique book that tells many stories in one - the murder trial of accused killers of Ted Binion, Jim's own sensational poker run, and mixed in is lots of tidbits of poker history and player profiles. Overall, it is pretty good, but could have been better were it not for too many tedious pages of personal history, minutia of the tournament, and philosophical digressions that had me yawning. A good quarter of this 400 page book just wasn't all that interesting to me. On the other hand, in reading other sections, I found that I couldn't put it down.
Overall, getting through the tedious sections was made worthwhile by not only his great tournament story, but a real education on the history of the game, and where it is at present. BUT, if you bore easily, this may not be the book for you.
2 Words .....Bor - Ring.......2007-07-19
This book is so boring in the beginning that I haven't even been able to finish it to get to parts that other reviewers say are exciting. I thought it was about the World Series of Poker and the murder trial. Instead I have to read about McManus' childhood. Of course I've seen him on poker shows and he seems pretty boring in real life too.
If you're looking for a poker book, pass on this one.
Horrible.......2007-06-04
Don't waste your money. If you feel you have to have this book buy it 2nd or even 5th hand. It is boring and not well written. I find myself simply skimming through many pages that get completely off the topic. If I could return any of the books I have purchased from amazon or anyplace else, this would be the one.
Well written trip through the 2000 WSOP and the Vegas trial of the century.......2007-05-23
James McManus (fiction author, sports journalist and sometime poker player) went to Vegas to cover the trial of the murder of Ted Binion (whose father started the World Series of Poker (WSOP)) and to cover the rise of women at the WSOP. He ends up taking part of the advance money, winning a play-in satellite tourney, and getting a seat at the 2000 WSOP.
He made it to the final table and fifth place.
He intertwines his own story (an amatuer amongst some of pokers greatest names) with stories of the trial (where Ted's girlfriend and best friend are accused of murdering him), Jim's own personal history, the history of poker and the WSOP and the parallels he sees between them all.
The insights into the game, the hands, the mannerisms, and particularly what Jim is thinking at the time (fold? call? raise? who's that beautiful dealer named Red?) dividing the voices in his head (see? not just me!) into Good Jim and Bad Jim, make the writing of the actual WSOP satellite and tournament the best part of the book. But the other stories are woven in intricately and smoothly (with only a few abstract jumps), mixing in Dante and Dostoyevsky to prove his point.
Since the book has been written, the number of players entered into the big Texas Hold-em WSOP tourney has climbed in from the $1.5 million Chris "Jesus" Ferguson won (and 512 entrants) in 2000 to 2006's $12million Jamie Gold won amongst the 8,773 entrants (and around 12,000 are expected this year).
Read it before the big one this July 6, and it will help you imagine the action.

Get the most from your teammates..........2004-04-22
This book is a quick-read filled with great advice for putting together a team. As chairman for a committee in a business association, I was having trouble getting volunteers to do their share of the work. After reading this book, I implemented the steps the author lays out and used the techniques to handle members who aren't doing well. The ideas in this book are helping make our committee successful.
Excellent!.......2004-04-21
Well organized, easy to read with step-by-step guidelines for establishing a group. She also tells you how to avoid common pitfalls. Very well done.

Ever want to build a massive parallel super-computer? How about one comprising the best information processors we know - the human brain. How about a Mastermind Group!
Natalie Brecher's book is one of those "gems" that you find from time to time that is a quick read, but chock full of wisdom and insight. She has captured and made accessible the concept of synergy in a real Mastermind Team, and given us a step by step instruction manual to building our own team.
In clear language and forthright thought, Ms. Brecher gives us the 8 steps, the advantages for each step, and the pitfalls that await us if we are unaware. She eloquently makes the case for why we should even consider a Mastermind Team, then goes about helping us to know that we too can form such a team.
My Mastermind Team was formed in much the same way Ms. Brecher describes in her book. It has been an invaluable asset in my business. And in the spirit of full disclosure I must confess that Natalie is part of that Mastermind Team. What she has given to the readers of this excellent book is real, based in fact, and founded on experience. I highly recommend that you create a Mastermind Team and that your team read and understand what Natalie freely shares with you!
It's not what you know, it's who you know!.......2004-04-17
No one succeeds alone. This book gives you the tools and techniques to pull together a support group that provides a win/win for everyone involved. Natalie provides quotes of wisdom, the history of various support groups and the how to's so you can create your own mastermind alliance.
I highly recommend this book for anyone who desires to tap into the potential of being in a group in order to achieve more.

Hello.
I'm a Cheetah Girls fan. This book is special. Because it tells different stories from each girl.
Wishing On A Star: You mostly get to know Galleria in this book. So yeah, this is mostly about Galleria with The Cheetah's, Chanel, and the weird guy, Derek with this sidekick, Macarol. Spelling this right??? But anyway, this book is funny and fun!
Shop In The Name Of Love: Chanel uses her mothers credit card and she visits her stepmothers salon. Her mother gets angry. But later lends Chanel the credit card for one thing. Chanel buys more like 20 different things. Then, she gets in big trouble and has to work at Toto in New York....Fun in Diva Sizes. [ Galleria's mothers shop.]This book is hip and hot!
Who's Bout To Bounce: This one's magical. It's amazing how Dorinda has so many brothers and sisters. She really loves them. Miss Bosco [ Her Foster Mom.] Has an adoption party. But, the twist is, for " reasons" she can't adopt her. It's a good book.
Hey, Ho Hollywood!: This is a great book. Angie and Aqua's dad's girlfriend Aballa Shalla whatever. But they [ Cheetah Girls] perform at the Apollo theater and they lose. But this book is sweet.
This is one sassy book! Buy this lovely book!
It's Awesome!

Product Description
Esteemed for its speed and athleticism, admired for its grace and beauty, coveted for its hunting prowess, the cheetah has nonetheless been harassed and hounded to the point of extinction. Author Luke Hunter looks into the history, evolution, behavior and day-to-day survival of one of the most fascinating of the big cats. He discusses the ancestry of the cheetah, its hunting strategies, reproduction, social behavior and status throughout Africa and Iran - the last remaining pocket of the species in Asia. Hunter also focuses on the tenuous future of the cheetah, its decreasing habitat and declining numbers, and deals with the immediate and long-term conservation issues facing the species. His authoritative text highlights the latest research on cheetahs, dispelling the myths and providing a comprehensive overview of the cheetah in the wild. Throughout the book, his first-hand field observations supplement data on the latest ecological discoveries from cheetah researchers across Africa. Powerful, full-color photographs by Dave Hamman make this book a visual feast and reveal a world that is both intensely private and highly dramatic. Hamman's portrayal of the many modes and activities of this elusive animal presents a sumptuous gallery of photographs, while at the same time serving to broaden our knowledge - and help ensure the survival - of this remarkable and beautiful cat.

A must have for fans of the cheetah.......2005-10-16
This is such a beautifully presented book and takes pride of place in my collection. I've never come across such a comprehensive book on the cheetah and the photographs are extraordinary.
I give both thumbs up to the author and all his work, as the resultant book is my favourite.
Customer Reviews:
helping to save cheetahs.......2007-09-23
Only about 12,000 cheetahs are left in the wild, and about 3,000 of them are in Namibia in southwestern Africa. Namibia is the location of the Cheetah Conservation Fund, where the author lived and worked while writing this book. The book begins by explaining what the CCF does, saving injured cheetahs and either rehabilitating them and releasing them back into the wild or giving them a good home and food for the rest of their lives. The book also gives information on how cheetahs hunt and live in the wild. It ends with what the reader can do to help this endangered species to survive. It also contains a glossary and an index.
This book is packed with beautiful pictures and detailed information about cheetahs. The author talks about her experiences working with the cheetahs in a very casual, personal way that makes it fun to read. It is a good read for animal lovers who are interested in endangered species. Readers will also be happy to know that portions of the proceeds from the book will be donated to the Cheetah Conservation Fund's programs.

Book Description
Twelve-year-old Xan Hopcraft grew up with a pet cheetah at his home in Nairobi, Kenya. When the magnificent animal died, Xan wrote a story about what it was like to own a cheetah and how he died. With both photographs and Xan's own drawings, here is a real story of life in Africa.
Customer Reviews:
Beautiful movie. Will buy the book.......2007-07-15
Having recently seen the movie Duma, I feel like I must buy this book. For all those considering purchasing it, please ignore the empiricist, who, in the first editorial review criticizes the boy, Xan, for ascribing "human emotions and attitudes to the big cat." This is scientistic nonsense. Ignore it.
Wonderful True Story.......2007-01-12
How It Was With Dooms is the wonderful true story of one family's adventure raising an orphaned cheetah in Africa. The movie Duma was based on this story. The true story is not quite like the movie so it was a pleasant surprise to learn the truth about Dooms. The book has great photographs of the Hopcraft family with Dooms and is an amazing snapshot of life in Africa.
Incredible story incredible pictures.......2006-07-25
My son wanted this book when he heard about it at a book fair at school. It is an incredible book. We love the way it is written from a little boys perspective (Xan was 10 when the book was written.) We recently had the opportunity to meet Carol Hopcraft and her husband when they came to our city. Dooms was not really a pet - he was free to go as he liked - but he did not ever leave them. He hunted - he was not feed like a pet once he reached maturity. Shallah, his successor, did the same. I am sure their current cheetah does it as well. The book is heartwarming and is written with the love and respect they had for Dooms. This is even more evident when they talk about their life with Dooms. They, more than most of us, understand that cheetahs are wild animals. This book is not meant to tote the benefits of have a pet cheetah - it is book about the bond between humans and animals.
Great book for Kids or Adults.......2006-07-12
Why is it that "kids" books are sometimes so much more interesting than Adult books? As if upon reaching adulthood we some how lose interest in animals. Well, perhaps I'm a kid at heart. I found this a great book. This is a very touching story about a family's relationship with an adopted Cheetah Cub. The story is simple yet full of truth and insight. For me, it highlights the need to see animals as dignified creatures in need of our compassion and protection. This is a book that will hopefully send an important message to young readers.Regardless of whether Cheetahs should be or should not be, or were or were not domesticated, this is a cool book with neat photos and I highly recommend it.
Dooms.......2006-06-11
Actually, cheetahs are not and have never been domesticated, and they are and always have been very difficult to breed in captivity. Although they do have a less aggressive attitude than typical wild cats, they are not pets and should not be. Utilizing cheetahs to hunt over the past few hundred years was not the result of captive bred cheetahs, they were wild caught. Fortunately, outside of wild orphaned cheetahs in Africa, they are not a cat that you can purchase as a pet, because they are not suited as a pet and are not domesticated.

Customer Reviews:
Friends Forever.......2005-01-23
THE CHEETAH GIRLS: GROWL POWER FOREVER by Deborah Gregory takes us on an adventure of five teenage girls who dream of becoming superstars. The book is a compilation of four stories which allows us to get to know each girl up close and personal. The girls who have that growl power are: Galleria 'Bubbles' Garibaldi, Chanel 'Chuchie' Simmons, Dorinda 'Do Re Mi' Rogers, and the twins Anginette and Aquanette Walker.
In Showdown at the Okie-Dokie the girls win a talent show, but are accused of stealing their competitor's lyrics. Can the girls remain in unity during this fiasco? Chuchifrita Ballerina is the story of Chanel attempting to make her dream of becoming a prima ballerina come true. Will she be able to make her dream a reality and still be down with the Cheetah Girls? How will she be able to swing both without someone or something being neglected? In Dorinda Gets Her Groove, Dorinda lives in a foster home but eventually meets her biological sister Tiffany. Tiffany dreams of becoming a Cheetah Girl, but the other girls aren't too keen on the idea. Will Dorinda have to choose between her sister and the group? In the House With Mouse is about record producer Mouse Almighty wanting to produce the girls demo tape; the girls have to really strut their stuff to show they can shine in the spotlight.
THE CHEETAH GIRLS was a very enjoyable and entertaining read. Although the 608 pages were a bit intimidating at first, after getting into the stories and getting to know each girl personally, the pages flew by. There was a lot of slang used in the book and for adults who may not be aware of the defininitions of the words there is a very helpful Cheetah Girls glossary at the end of each story. Reading this book took me back to my teen years when me and my friends use to pretend we had a singing group, and how things would be if we made it big. The trip down memory lane brought back fond memories and in the words of the Cheetah girls this book was "spectaculous".

Nicole's second review.......2005-01-05
I liked the whole book a lot. I read books 11 and 12. Book 12 was great. I was hanging on every word for more information. The other book was all right. It could have told you more but it was still good. But over all, they were good. There were 4 books in 1so don't worry if it's long. I also wrote another review just to split it up.
Book # 11 was about Dorinda finding her sister and spending time with her. The other book was great. It was about Aqua and Angie going to the Mariah Carey concert and meeting Mariah with the rest of the cheetah girls. But then they go to vocal lessons and something bad happens. If you want to learn more, then read the book and find out more.
I think that girls should definitely read the book. Girls would understand it better. They should be a preteen up to an 18 year old because it's all about 5 teenage girls and their lives. The thing I didn't like about this book was there were 4 books in 1. I think it would be easier to read if it was 4 separate books than 1 book with 4 stories. I think it was confusing.
Nicole's Review.......2004-12-03
I was reading The Cheetah Girls books 9 and 10. I liked them, because they are about The Cheetah Girls' lives. Also I watched The Cheetah Girls movie, so I wanted to read their book.
This book is about these 5 girls who are in the music business. Their names are Galleria (Bubbles), Chanel (Chuchie), Dorinda (Do' Ra Mi), Anginette (Angie), and Aquanette (Aqua). The first book was about the show down at Okey Dokey. There are these girls that thinks the Cheetah Girls stole their song (Which they did) and they were being mean and rude. The second book was about Chanel trying to get into American Ballet Theater and if you want to hear more then read the book!!
I think a pretty good reader could understand these types of books. Now don't forget, there are 8 more books behind these books and you should read the other books first before you read these 4. And don't worry that it looks long because there are 4 books in 1 and if you see this type of book then look on the front cover and it will most likely tell you that it is, 1-4,5-8 or even what I am reading, 9-12! So don't panic if you see a book like this. I panicked when I saw that. I even said, "I can't finish all that in a month!" but I know now.
Best Cheetah Girls book YET!!.......2004-05-10
Hey I'm Courtney.I just finished reading this book and it was great!! The story of 5 girls trying to find their dreams of becoming a famous singing group is very inspiring to young girls every where who want to follow their own dreams. My favorite story in this combined book is Show down at the Okie Dokie. If you read all the cheetah girl books before this one you'll know that aqua and angie went to houston for Thanksgiving and they went to an audition for a houston helps its own concert starring Karmas Children. They get an opening spot and the rest of the cheetahs come down for the concert. They sing it's raining benjamins which was inspired by a dream chanel had where it was raining money had but they used some of the lyrics the Cash Money Girls (CMG) used in their song. And before they know it CMG is out to get the Cheetahs for bitin at they flava!!I'm not gonna tell you the rest cuz you should read this great book and the other two combined books!!So far I have all 3 combined books and I'm hoping there is a 4th one. Please run to Borders NOW and get this book!!

Tomorrow's Sphinx.......2007-03-22
Tomorrow's Sphinx is an extremely imaginative and thought provoking read. With wonderful characters and beautiful descriptions, Clare Bell has created an exquisite world like no other.
Kichebo, a cheetah who's lucky to have survived past year one, is not like the rest of her kin. She is unique in the sense that she is black with gold tear lines, gold ear tips, and a gold tail tip, and that she is mentally different from her brethren. Shunned because of her differences, Kichebo is destined to find out that she is different in a way that she could never have fathomed. Through the guidance of Asu-Kheknemt, a long dead cheetah who protected and befriended Tutankhamen, a wise, grayed cheetah named Gray Cape, and the affectionate human child, Menk, Kichebo will soon discover what her place in the world is, and find herself.
I would highly reccomend this book to anyone who wants a fresh original fantasy read, you will not be dissapointed!!
Tomorrow's sphinx.......2005-03-24
I love this book! I found it in my school library a few months ago, and since then have read it at least four times. The story involes a type of cats and Egypt, both things I like. Now if only I could get my friend to read it.....But really, anyone who loves books in different times and/or cats will(or should) like this book!
Cats and Time Travel Just Seem to Go Together!.......2004-01-17
Kichebo is a black cheetah, born in a far-flung future. Unlike the gold-coated, black spotted cheetahs around her, her coat is sable with gold markings. Everywhere she goes, she is hunted by strange creatures in sky vehicles that try to capture her. Unable to find acceptance or safety among her kind, she makes contact with another--amazingly like herself. Kehknemt lived thousands of years ago, the companion of an Egyptian Prince. Through these shared memories across time, and the strange friendship Kichebo strikes up with small two-legged creature, the black cheetah hopes to find the answers to the questions of why she is so different, and what her future might hold.
Clare Bell has a real love of the big cats, and provides an insightful look into the lives of these large hunters. Her depiction of the cheetah society does not try to over-anthropomorphize the cats into human beings. Although they communicate in a sentient manner and are provided with personality and purpose, their behaviors and lifestyles remain those of powerful semi-solitary predators. It makes for an interesting glimpse into how an intelligent society of cats might develop. Beyond this, Kichebo's story is one coming of age and discovery of self. The questions Kichebo most seeks an answer to are: "Why am I so different?" and "What is the meaning of my life?" Questions that are universal and easy to understand, if not easy to answer. Kichebo is destined to take her people in a new direction, one she never imagined. The time travel aspect of this book gives us a fascinating look into what might have been in the days of King Tutankhamen, and the reasons behind the young King's early death.
This book is written with young readers in mind, much of Kichebo's search for self and struggle to become who she is will echo with adolescents who are going through the same struggle. I read this book in my teens and have reread it several times since. I think adult readers will find the story lacks the kind of mature sophistication they might be used to in adult science fiction, but it fits the intended readership well. For those who enjoy this book, see if you can find Ratha's Creature, also by Clare Bell.
Happy Reading! Shanshad ^_^
Excellent scifi and animal book.......2002-05-18
This is my favorite book. I could read it over and over again and never get tired of it. It has an excellent point of view from the animal and great scifi entertainment. If you love wild cats especially cheetahs and you like Egypt and it's history and you're into scifi I suggest you read Tomorrow's Sphinx.
