4 out of 5 stars Too much.......2006-11-04

It's probably my own fault but this book is a bit over my head. I just wanted a book to identify birds I might see in my area of NH or New England and this book has lots of birds I am sure I will never come close to seeing! If you are a serious birder and are on the lookout for rare birds stopping by during migration you would like this book, but many of them don't live in New England at all. I guess thats why the title has the word "of" underlined. Now I know. Descriptions are thorough and each bird gets it's own entire page full of information and the birds description sometimes helps more than the picture as some of the pictures are just not that good. There is a little box on each page that lists "similar birds" which helps in identification, but I just wish the pictures were more clear.

5 out of 5 stars flawless guide to New England's feathered friends.......2003-08-08

There are approximately 920 species of birds known to visit North America, and 302 of them are documented visitors to New England. All 302 are covered here, as well as 179 occasional species. This compact yet comprehensive book begins with 28 pages of introduction, including instructions on using the book, identifying birds and field technique.

Profiles are one page per species, and the quantity and quality of the information on each page is spectacular. Each entry contains the family and species name; the length, wingspan and weight of a typical specimen; plumage, habitat and migration information; and descriptive paragraphs about the species' song, behavior, breeding, nesting, population and conservation as well as a distribution map (with migratory information); and pictorial depictions of the species' flight pattern and nest identification. Also included is a scaled silhouette and at least one color photograph. (More pictures are included if the male/female/adolescents/seasonal plumage differ in appearance.) There are blank spaces to note the date, time and location of a sighting. After these 302 entries, smaller entries describe each of 179 bird species that are considered vagrant or casual visitors to the region, and contain the name, a color picture, a distribution map and the average length of that specimen. Entries are organized taxonomically, beginning with birds that do NOT perch and sing, and continuing with those that DO. The book concludes with a glossary (though nowhere does it define 'altricial' -- meaning born helpless, a word used frequently in the entries), a good index, and acknowledgments, including picture credits.

I'm an old reference librarian, and I have a shelf full of flawed naturalist guides, so I'm not easily impressed -- but this guide is spectacular. If you have any interest in the birds of New England, this should be the first guide you get.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Solid duck care book.......2007-07-24

This book would be very helpful to they inexperienced duck owner. However, I can't see it taking anyone beyond the basics, and if you own ducks at some point you will have to travel down that road. This book does give a lot of good information. It has everything from basic anatomy of the duck, to diet, housing and environmental concerns, duck behavior, raising ducks, a list on ornamental and domestic breeds, and most importantly it gives you the basics in an easy to understand format.

Having said all this this book has some weaknesses. It does not have a detailed breeds list (only a couple pages). This book does cover a lot of information in under a hundred pages, but it doesn't cover any one thing really well. I prefer Dave Holderreads book "Storey's Guide To Raising Ducks." I feel it is a superior book for both novices and experienced poultry personal. So why did I give this book 4 stars? Simply, this book does everything it can in under a hundred pages, it just doesn't do enough in my opinion. It would be a good book to start with, but you will eventually have to buy or get more information somewhere else.

5 out of 5 stars Duck Handbook.......2005-08-12

Owning a pet duck is a lot different than owning a dog or cat!
This book will help you know how to house, feed and care for that cute little Easter duckling that quickly turns into a big white bundle of feathers.

I love to go feed the ducks at the local pond. I now know what types come to the pond and why they act the way they do. This book is interesting enough for an adult, but easy enough for a child to understand. This is a WONDERFUL book. Very FUN to read.

4 out of 5 stars good book to get you started.......2007-06-13

this is a good general information book. It will help you get started with your cockateils. It has been very helpful to me.

5 out of 5 stars Don't listen to the "EXPERTS".......1998-10-18

I read with interest the review from the "professional" cockatiel person. What seems to be a 'one star' for them happens to be very useful to all of us "non-professionals".

This book has helped beginners and that is what counts. Sometimes, the "experts" are dead wrong when it comes to the simpleness of a book helping the beginning cockatiel owner. This isn't bad, because most of us could give a hoot about genetics and showing your cockatiel at contests.

Good book for beginners.

5 out of 5 stars Cockatiels, Cockatiels, Cockatiels!!.......1998-09-22

This book has everything you'd ever want to know about cockatiels. I 1st got it as a Christmas present, about 3 months after I got my bird, a 16 wk. old, female Australian Gray. She is turning 3 in May of 1999. But this book helped me understand her and the way she lives. I wish to train her to speak very soon. The book gives methods on traing & taming of all sorts, a complete food guide & table of dangers, and 5 different floorplans for outdoor aviaries, plus ideas on how to create your own!! For me, it was a life-saver!! Also in the "The New... ...Handbook" series are "The new Dog Handbook" and "The new Paraket Handbook". Many others also are included, plus a series of un-revised books called "The... ...Handbook" This series had manymore species, eventhough "The New... ...Handbook" series is updated, revised, more up-to-date and has all the newest information, ideas and theories from many different scientists. Use it!!

1 out of 5 stars An archaic collection of cockatiel information........1998-08-24

Having bred and raised cockatiels for 13 years, I can unequivocally state that this book contains little or no helpful information about cockatiels. In fact, there is a great deal of misinformation. For example, the genetics section contains incorrect information regarding the breeding of albino cockatiels, treating albino as if it were one gene instead of a combination of lutino and whiteface. Another good example of Mr. Vriend's use of archaic information is that he recommends peat moss in the nestbox, which can cause fungal growth leading to aspergillosis, which is a serious lung disease.

My recommendation: read a book written by someone who has recently bred cockatiels.

5 out of 5 stars great basic beginner's book!.......1998-01-21

I was interested in getting cockatiels as pets & picked up this book to learn more about these birds before I bought them. I found this book to be VERY informative & gave me plenty of knowledge about these birds & led me to buy them. I keep refering back to this book almost daily since I picked up the birds a week ago.

4 out of 5 stars Very informative.......2007-02-17

I recently got my first Red Rump parakeet. Ordered this book to get good basic information on care and such. Felt it was a good basis all around book for all Australian parakeets. Went into many types of the Australian keets.

3 out of 5 stars Good book but ordered for someone else.......2006-08-22

The only reason I gave this book 3 stars is because I simply looked through it briefly. I ordered it for a friend of mine who has a Pale-headed Rosella. I assume she finds it helpful. Sorry I couldn't be more specific!

4 out of 5 stars Field guide for broad-tailed parakeets.... .......2005-01-09

THE NEW AUSTRALIAN PARAKEET HANDBOOK by Matthew Vriends, is a relatively technical volume covering "everything about purchase, housing, care, nutrition, behavior, breeding and disease' and a special chapter on `understanding the Australian Parakeet'

Ever wonder where that blue or yellow budgie you own fits into the larger scheme of the Parakeet world? This book won't tell you. NAPH describes the whereabouts of selected parakeets native to Australia, not `Melopsittacus undulatus. You won't find `Budgies' in the index either, and the `Grass Parakeet is not the Budgie according to this book.

Vriends book covers the so-called `broad tailed parakeets' ornamental birds you might encounter on a field trip and want to breed yourself, could you catch a pair. Vriends Includes descriptions of Nymphicus hollandicus known to most of us as the`Cockatiel' and he also writes about lesser known species such as Rosellas, Ring-necks and Red-rumped Parakeets, as well as the Yellow-vented Blue Bonnet parakeet which must be a sight to see in the wild. Vriends book is really a breeding and "birding" book comparable to those published by the Smithsonian on captive breeding programs for `threatened' birds held in captivity and/or finding them in their threatened habitats, and would make a good companion on your next trip through Australia to search the bush and back roads. In fact, one great shot shows an old guy with camper in the background, feeding a wild flock of Australian King Parrots with bright red heads (could this be the author?). The book includes many photos with poor captions and plenty of black and white drawings which I find offputting when trying to determine which species might be lurking on the fence post yonder.

5 out of 5 stars The New Australian Parakeet Handbook.......2002-08-07

This was one of the very few books that covered to any degree the rare species of bird that I recently purchased.

I have also seen this title in a highly respected local bird farm library.

Highly recommended for not extensive information on each breed, but short summaries on about every breed of Australian parakeet you need to know about.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource book.......2001-04-30

Dr. Vriends is one of the formost authorities on birds, and this book is an excellent example of his knowledge in unusual species. It covers all Australian parakeets that are usually kept, and is currently the most comprehensive guide to these interesting beauties. Highly recommend this book for all who own or are considering owning Australian broad and long tailed parakeets.

Book Description

As quirky and full of life as the city itself, this expansive guide covers the Big Apple the way New Yorkers know it: neighborhood by neighborhood. Organizing the city's sights, practicalities, and offbeat pleasures geographically, Christiane Bird puts insider attractions at readers' fingertips: Whether they're looking for ginger ice cream in Chinatown, a wax museum in Harlem, or a posh supper and dance club in the Upper East Side, New York City Handbook will lead them to it.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST GUIDE ..........2001-01-10

This excellent handbook is arranged by neighborhoods, allowing you to find all the places of interest in your immediate area without flipping back and forth. In addition, for the person that was looking for a particular type of food/etc. (that could be anywhere in the city), the author includes an appendix which has restaurants (listed according to cuisine), accommodations (listed by price), museums (by type), shopping (by type of item). The restaurant descriptions were concise and extremely accurate and included the average entree price (as a dollar amount rather than a range). The author also tells what the establishment is famous for (if anything) and the type of crowd it draws.

In addition to clever organization and attention to detail, this guide is filled with many humorous and intriguing histories of numerous places that I've actually been but until now didn't have any idea about. For example, in a sidebar entitled "Only in New York" the author refers to the gorgeous 23-acre Riverbank State Park built on top of a sewage treatment plant.

After looking at every guide in a large bookstore (for over an hour), I decided to purchase 3 guides each with a different strength. After 'reading' them more carefully it became clear that The New York City Handbook is without a doubt the most useful and most interesting. One guide had a stronger coverage in specialist shops the other guide had more information, but it was much less readable and not totally necessary. My suggestion is if you must buy only one guide, buy this one.

5 out of 5 stars A bargain.......2000-12-16

It was my bad luck to discover this book only after visiting Manhattan, but the fact that it was still an interesting read says a lot. Organized by neighborhoods, the flavor of each one is vividly and fairly described. Many interesting historical facts are thrown in, yet none intrude on the presentation of New York City as it is today. A nice surprise was a subtle sense of the author's kindness (yes, in New York!)throughout. While no guidebook can cover everything, this one will surely help anyone get the most out of their visit in a city that's too big and too interesting to waste any time in.

5 out of 5 stars New York City Handbook.......2000-03-28

From Times Square to Central Park, this fun to read guide to the Big Apple is full of indepth information to guide readers through its wonderland. It puts the "new" back in "New York."

1 out of 5 stars Old, INCORRECT information.......2001-08-04

This book was the the first book that I purchased when I began researching getting my first bird. As my knowledge grew I learned that most, if not all of the information in this "new" book was VERY out of date. When this book was written we were still catching birds in the rainforest, feeding them only seed and water, and not understanding their basic emotional, dietary and medical needs. There are many wonderful books out there that help you choose, and raise the right parrot species for your lifestyle - this is not one of them. Check the copywrite date. Anything written before 1992 (when we stopped importing and started really hand raising and learning what our feathered companions need) is probably out of date and is only good for the pictures.

Please, for the sake of your future companion, get a book written recently, with up to date information, or find a breeder to ask what to read. Do your research first, but make sure that it good research.

3 out of 5 stars Not the best, but still not the worst. Inexpensive........1998-10-01

This book showed a lot of promise when I bought it, but after the first few pages it was appearant that this was a book written for European collectors, not American breeders or pet owners. Diet recommendations are possibly harmful, as are some of the training tips. I was hoping for much more from this nicely presented book, but got one collectors opinion and some poor photos. If nothing else is available, this is a start.

3 out of 5 stars Some information is outdated.......2006-01-19

I enjoyed reading this book, and I love all the pictures, but some important information is outdated. For example, the book suggests over and over that you give your parakeet gravel to help with digestion, but this is a big no-no. A more recent book would explain the dangers of this practice, and inform the reader to steer clear of gravel and grit, as well as sandpaper perches (which can hurt and injure your bird's poor little feet).

Much of the information is very helpful, and again, the pictures are wonderful, but I would suggest a more current book to anyone who is looking for accurate information on the feeding and care of your parakeet. If I had noticed the publishing date of this book (English version was first published in 1986) I would have passed on it.

5 out of 5 stars question on parakeet behavior.......2000-03-17

Please let me know about parakeets eating the paper on the bottom of the cage. "Wicky" has become finiky with his food and started to eat paper. Is this harmfil? What should I do?

5 out of 5 stars The New Parakeet Handbook.......2000-02-05

This book is an exallent source of information on the raising, caring or breedind of budgies. It includes diagnosis and treatment charts for illnesses and injuries. This book also includes what and what not to feed the budgie, home grown foods and housing requirments. It even has a section for breeding, taming and the behavior of Parakeets. In my opion this book is a MUST for ALL parakeet owners. Wheither the first time novice, or a serious breeder. Use it as a guide to care for your bird or as a referance guide for diagnosing and treatment of any budgie problems. The book has lots of photos, drawings, and charts. I love this book and use it all the time for my budgie Joe. This is one awsome budgie book!

5 out of 5 stars Great book for the first time owner!.......1999-11-06

This book is excellent for children,or those of us just getting our first "keet".The information is concise and easily understood. The book is set up to cover a touch of just about everything from where did they originate to handfeeding babies. The color photos are exquisite! I would highly recommend this book to anyone who has a budgie. It would also make a nice gift accompaniment if someone would like to give someone a budgie as a gift!

5 out of 5 stars Best Beginner's Book on Finches.......2003-08-28

Pay no attention to the bad review below, that is the viewpoint of someone prejdice to the carduelan finches which is basically for advanced finch hobbiests, breeders, and aviculturists. That review shows little interest in being helpful to new or prospective finch owners. Christa Koepff has written without a doubt, THE most helpful book on finch care for begginers. Easy to read, reference, and understand. I own and moderate FinchFriends, one of the best and most popular Finch groups on Yahoo! I very highly recommend this book to all my members.

4 out of 5 stars Good Overview of Exotic Finches.......2002-02-11

There is great info for beginners here, including info on the care and breeding of exotic finches. However, there is not too much specific info on specific breeds.

1 out of 5 stars The New Finch Handbook.......2001-12-13

This book should be re-named as "The Non-Singing Finches Handbook" because that is exactly what it is. It is a book for new Beginners, not for the advanced beginner, intermediate or expert breeder, because the content is superficial and out dated. Nothing is mentioned of singing birds such as the northern cardinal, rose breasted grosbeak, indigo bunting, siskins, goldfinches, linnets, etc. Instead you will find that the book has information on exotic finches such as firefinches, gouldians, gordon bleus, munias, grassfinches, javafinches, all those non singing birds that I do not keep and never will keep. Do not be misled by reviews that suggest this is a book for experts. It is far from the truth. I would not even buy this book if I am a new beginner, a much better deal is the Finches & softbilled birds by Henry bates and Robert Busenbark, and I also bought the Finches and Sparrows by Peter Clement (plse see my review on this book on Amazon).

4 out of 5 stars Good Finch Book.......2000-04-15

This is a very good book, expecially for beginners. Lots of good basic information on the care an breeding of finches. Good species descriptions. However, my copy had many blank pages, and I did not get to read about some species, such as the Zebra Finch.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful finch book........2000-03-02

I love this book! I found this book to be extremely helpful. I reccomend this book to finch lovers everywhere!

5 out of 5 stars If you raise canaries, you must own this book!.......2002-11-12

This is the quintessential canary handbook; easy to read and understand, filled with excellent photos and advice, with a good section on genetics if you should choose to breed these marvelous little birds. Vriends is a wonderful writer, well-organized on all the chapters in the aspects of canary breeding; his love of the birds comes through on every page. I have raised canaries for several years, and recommend this book to every person who has ever procured a bird from me---in fact, if they have not had a canary before, I always tell them to buy THIS book first, read it and THEN call me back. It is an invaluable resource tool.

5 out of 5 stars The BEST Value Ever.......2002-03-21

Having been involved in care of all sorts of animals for over 40 years and habitually buying books about each, I can say without reservation that this book is the best value for the dollar that I have ever purchased. Matthew Vriends is an internationally recognized expert on the species and he has provided us with an extraordinary handbook. The information, illustrations and photographs exceed anything I have ever purchased in a paperback edition of an animal care book.

4 out of 5 stars Good information provided.......2000-01-25

Very clear. Covers feeding, housing, breeding, and genetics,as well as common diseases and household medicines that can be used to treat various conditions to which canaries are susceptible. However, an owner who does not want to breed might grow tired of the focus on breeding. Also, owners with canaries who were not handfed as babies may assume there is something wrong with their bird because the book discusses relatively tame handfed canaries and neglacts state that their tameness and willingness to be handled is not true of birds who were not hand fed. So be aware that if your bird does not like to be handled, this is normal. In fact, a non hand fed canary who does not struggle when caught may be ill. One final note: Information and medicating are fine, but misdiagnosis can occur,so it is good to also be have the name of a vet.

5 out of 5 stars The best up-to-date canary care book on the market........1999-03-17

Dr. Vriends' book is a comprehensive guide to keeping canaries. He is an expert on aviculture who has published many books on its various aspects. The present book covers canaries of type, color, and song varieties and is richly illustrated with photographs and drawings which bring the readable text to life. The information contained in the book is wide-ranging and accurate.

5 out of 5 stars Great book!...Everything you need to know about canaries!.......1999-01-17

Yes!...This is a very valuable book to have. The format and layout are just perfect. Information?..it's all here. I'm going to use this book often.
