As an accomplished doctor of veterinary medicine, Martin Goldstein is well respected for his 25 years worth of experience in the field--experience he effectively utilizes in conjunction with his expertise in holistic medicine in his new book, The Nature of Animal Healing: The Path to Your Pet's Health, Happiness, and Longevity. Goldstein begins with a broad explanation of the origins of diseases in pets, then moves on to taking action against those diseases, not only offering thorough discussions of specific ailments--including cancer, allergies, and arthritis--and the holistic medicines available to help in the healing process, but also speaking to the "dubious legacy of vaccines" as well as the questionable quality of pet food. Finally, Goldstein turns his attention to the spiritual realm, addressing both the bonds that we have with our pets--and how those bonds aid in preventing and fighting our pets' health problems--as well as dealing with the death of a beloved pet. Goldstein's expert advice, inclusion of inspiring real-life cases, and thorough resource "compendium of holistic books, newsletters, Web sites, veterinarians, and associations" make this book a valuable addition to any pet owner's library. --Julia King
Book Description
A pioneering revolutionary prescription
for the health and long life of your pets
For two decades, Dr. Martin Goldstein--America's most successful, renowned holistic veterinarian--has healed and helped his animal patients with the same natural therapies that benefit humans. The results have been so astounding that today critically sick pets are brought to him from across the country for a new chance at life and health.
In this compelling, very accessible book, Dr. Goldstein explains exactly what holistic medicine is and how it works. By treating the root of a health problem instead of its symptoms, you too can help your animal to regain and maintain its own health, as nature intended. Dr. Goldstein also shares many remarkable true stories of supposedly terminally ill animals who have recovered to full wellness. Inside you'll discover
- Why our animals get sick, even when we strive to give them the best of care
- An exhaustive A to Z guide of pet ailments--and the best course of action
- Why vaccines can do more harm than good
- The link between diet and disease--and how the right diet can not only prevent disease but reverse it
- How acupuncture, homeopathy, chiropractic, and other alternative options work--safely and painlessly--to restore true health
- Specific guidance for the use of herbs, supplements, and natural remedies
- The good news (and the bad) about cancer in animals--including extraordinary new treatments and potential cures
- Coping with the inevitable death of your pet--both physically and psychologically
And much, much more
PLUS--the ultimate resource for holistic pet care: an extensive guide to holistic product manufacturers and stores, books, newsletters, Web sites, veterinarians, and associations!

great book.......2007-10-11
I was very pleased with the quality, condition, and quick delivery of my books, thanks!
Excellant Book!!!!.......2007-10-01
This book truly makes alot of sense, and has opened a whole different perspective in pet health for me.I found it very hard to put this book down after I started reading it.I have to agree with other readers, that, you will never look at your pet's health and well being, the same again.Every pet owner should read this book!!!! I think it would make a really great gift for others as well.
A MUST READ!.......2007-09-16
This book is very informative,if just for reccommended feeding guidelines and vaccination awareness.Every cat and dog owner needs to read this and be aware of whats in our pets food.
Real Food for Pets!.......2007-08-23
From personal experience, I know Martin Goldstein is right on with feeding pets real food.
For years, my Pug struggled with crystals in her diet...both acidic and alkaline. She was put on different Hill's Prescriptive Diet foods.
She was also going blind.
Two years ago, I thought--enough of this crappy food--I want the rest of her days (at that time I thought very limited) to have more quality. I started to feed her free-range chicken and premium canned food (because I knew it was balanced.)
She's still eating it and is now a healthy, almost 14 year old Pug! (I have since added meatloaf from free-range buffalo, brown rice and grated carrots.)
Harmonious Environment: Beautify, Detoxify and Energize Your Life, Your Home and Your Planet
a must have for all pet owners!.......2007-07-09
Dr. Goldstein's book truly changed the way I care for my companion animals. It sheds light on a new approach to caring for your pets. I found it very readable and clear. I especially liked the information on diet, and made changes to my pets foods that have already caused positive changes in their health. I recommend it uncondtionally.

Not detailed enough.......2005-05-31
I've had this book through 4 cats and kittens, and if you have a really healthy cat who never develops any illnesses, it's great. I find myself using the Cornell Feline Health Center online for my cats.
The diagnostic tree is just too vague, the descriptions of diseases are also too vague and there's just not enough information. Using a vet's resource center with a dictionary handy does you--and your cat--more good, especially if your cat has something really serious.
Not helpful enough.......2003-07-05
This book has a very serious omission on the subject of outdoor cats. The book does not mention at all that outdoor cats are in grave danger of attack by coyotes in many parts of the country. Coyotes are in places where many people wouldn't even expect them, such as in cities. There are precautions you can take to eliminate this danger or greatly reduce the chance of an attack. Unfortunately, this book does not list the precautions that should be taken. And by the way, bobcats will also be happy to kill a house cat and similar precautions would apply.
The only Cat Book I Have.......2000-06-08
This is a wonderful book. My wife and I have 7 cats and we received this as a gift from my in-laws. This is the only cat book we own and we look at it all the time. The book has great pictures of various cats acting out various behaviors, what a kitten should look like at a certain age, and even different parasites that a cat may get. Also included is a list of emergency situations and ways you can help your cat if he/she is injured. This is a great book no cat owner should be without.
Love This Book!.......2000-02-28
I find this book highly informative and well organized. I have 5 cats and own many cat books, but this one is by far the most referenced. I especially like the health reference section since I have not found this in any other books.
You don't need this one........2000-01-11
I expected more, and better, from the ASPCA. This book is so basic, much too elementary for anyone who already owns a cat. Really. In two years I've learned more from my cats than this book could tell me. The information level is cursory, and in some cases, spotty. It was published in 1992, so there's NOTHING here about breakthrough medications for flea and heartworm prophylaxis. The only good thing to say about this book is that the photographs are beautiful. Wish I could send it back and buy something more informative.

Cats.......2006-05-25
It was only within the last 10 years that I fell in love with cats. Until then, I was afraid of them and didn't like them near me. Then I was asked to care for someone's cats as they had to go away and so I promised to feed them. That was it! I am hooked. If you love cats, as I now do, or are just curious about them, then you will love this book. It is a beautifully presented, 476 page book, on excellent quality, glossy paper, packed with colour photographs of every cat you can imagine and then a whole lot more! The text is well written and the print easy to read. The content covers cat care and cat breeds. If every book I ordered were of this quality, I would be very happy indeed. There is just one thing; I wish that the book had gone more in depth into Feline Urologic Syndrome (FUS)which is quite a common killer of cats. Information on that can be found on the internet.

Everything you'll ever need to know about dogs and cats!.......2004-02-11
This was a quick read...not too wordy like most of the other books about pet care out there. I like the fact that a veterinarian wrote it too. Answers all questions from training to behavior and medical problems. A great book for anyone who owns a dog or cat... if you thought you knew everything about owning a pet, this book is sure to prove you wrong!
Awesome book-Informative and helpful!.......2004-02-10
My boyfriend purchased this book along with the mastiff puppy he got me for christmas....I thought I knew all i needed to know about dogs until I read through this incredible book! It covers everything from basic training to health issues and behavioral problems. Even the most experienced pet owner should have a copy of "Canine and Feline 101". I found it to be a quick ,informative read, -I highly recommend to anyone looking for some insight on choosing and adequately caring for a four legged friend!
Educational, easy to read, and fun........2004-02-08
Being a first time puppy owner (a beautiful 6 month old pit bull mix), I found this book to contain all the information I need to raise her properly. With regards to raising my puppy, I have discovered in this book proper housbreaking techniques, effective yet gentle obedience training, and preventative health care. As I read ahead, I see that the rest of the book seemingly has a wealth of information guiding me through every step of mine and my dog's life together, honestly explaining which situations call for which vaccines, and how to recognize that my dog might be in pain or sick. I highly recommend this book to dog and cat lovers alike.
Very well written and informative........2004-02-08
As a cat breeder and cat enthusiast, I find this book to be a must have for all cat lovers. Written in easily understood lay terminology, the author takes you through every stage of a cat's life, offering great insights eash step of the way. I will recommend this book to all who adopt my kittens.
Book Description
Since cats have a natural talent for looking better than they feel, it may surprise owners to learn that felines are considered “senior” at 7 and “geriatric” at 14. This invaluable guide explains such things as how to help an older cat with grooming, how to recognize the diseases that come with age, and how to tell if the animal is in pain or discomfort. Here, too, are the many different state-of-the-art treatments available—including how much each should cost. End-of-life questions—such as euthanasia and hospice care—are discussed frankly and with compassion for both pet and owner. Full of heartwarming case studies, this is a book for everyone who has the good fortune to live with a cat.

Great Book!.......2007-08-08
This is a wonderful book! I have already recommended it to several friends and our vet. Easy to read- well organized. Some sad stories though. But as sad as they are, they are meant to "light a fire" under the reader, so that they don't fall into the same situations with their beloved feline. The writer is definitely passionate about her cats. Good to use as a reference book as well. Easy to look up symptoms, treatments, etc. A must read for all cat lovers.
Smart, enjoyable, wonderful!.......2007-03-22
This wonderful book strikes the perfect balance between really useful information and deeply touching stories about the feline companions in our lives. The author has created a rhythmic dance that offers very smart, insightful ways to deal with all the circumstances of an aging cat, while keeping us delightfully entertained with pictures and true stories. The advice and information will arm you for just about anything, and help to make you a pro-active partner in your pet's aging process. Each story will touch your heart, bringing a smile, or maybe even a few tears as you remember the pets you've known. And now you'll be better able to make sure that the dear kitties in your life today won't suffer needlessly, due to things you might not have realized before. This is a delight to read!
A guide your pet can't live with out.......2007-03-21
I received this book as gift and it is amazing. As the person of an older cat I have found it, even in just a few days, to be of extreme benefit. It is a comprehensive, well written, accessible guide to helping your best friend age. It makes getting older less scary and details how you can maximize your older pet's quality of life. There is medical advice from veternarians as well as pet owners on how to deal with the medical issues that inevitably come up. The book gives you the knowledge, guidelines, and options to confidently deal with and enjoy your future with your older cat.

Food for thought for first-time cat caretakers.......2007-03-21
Although Milani's book seems to be more focused on purebred cats than shelter cats, the questions she asks are just as useful for people considering the adoption of a cat from the shelter or a kid at the grocery store parking lot. Adopting a cat is a commitment that can last up to 20 years or more, and Milani gives potential cat caretakers a chance to realistically assess how prepared they are for this commitment. A good read.
"Catstupid".......2003-10-26
I agree with the other reviewers. I checked this book out at the library to learn more about my favorite animal. I was disgusted by a great deal of the book. As a cat shelter volunteer, I can tell you that many, many wonderful pets can be found inside the shelter. Many cats end up there not because they were behavior problems, but because the owner didn't want to bother with them anymore, were moving, or got a new baby and didn't have time for the cat. These cats end up at the shelter through no fault of their own and deserve a great home. I shudder to think of how many naive readers would look at this book and automatically think breeder=good cat, and shelter=bad cat. Perhaps the vet should spend some time volunteering at a shelter herself before she makes such blanket statements. I also found it interesting that the only comment she makes on declawing is a positive one and mentions nothing about the cruel procedure it actually is. A truly informed veternarian would present both sides of the story and be honest about the details. (Of course, she makes more money when cats are brought in to be declawed, so it's not surprising she would keep quiet on the truth on this procedure!) Read this book if you would like to learn how to be CATSTUPID...otherwise, I recommend passing it by.
CatSmart, OwnerStupid?.......1999-09-27
Would you take your pet to a veterinarian who seemed to care little about cats? Then read this book.
Other reviewers have mentioned many of _CatSmart_'s flaws, so I won't repeat them here, but I will add a few. First, Milani seems to believe that cats, as a rule, should be allowed outside (and she gives her own free roam). I have yet to hear of a veterinarian or other animal professional who would, in all seriousness, recommend this! Cats face very real dangers outside, and making the choice to allow them out is almost certainly making the choice to give them a shorter lifespan. I could find no mention in the book of the pros and cons of sending cats outdoors.
Second, as others have pointed out, she strongly recommends buying only purebred cats from reputable breeders. She asserts that cats from shelters invariably have behavioral problems (as if purebred cats never do?); and she implies that "so-called 'no-kill' shelters" are even worse than the standard kind, since they couldn't possibly have the resources to adequately care for their cats. Thus, in two paragraphs, she brushes off the millions of unwanted cats who die every year - many of whom are perfectly healthy, well-adjusted creatures - and steers potential pet owners to buy cats only from those who breed cats for profit. To me, this doesn't imply that Milani cares a great deal about cats.
Aside from a few useful tidbits - such as tips on using double-sided tape to deter cats from forbidden areas, and reducing their intake of food by feeding them smaller amounts more often - this guide is largely useless. Worse, it may be harmful to the well-being of cats - which sort of defeats the purpose, doesn't it?
A Waste of Time.......1999-09-14
Milani's tedious, boring writing style made this book a chore to read. Her attempts at warmth and humor seem stilted and not natural. I also found the information in this book to be rehashed versions of previously released cat books.
I also fault the editor of this book for allowing Milani to labor on in such long paragraphs without giving the reader a break.
If you're new to the world of cats or you're searching for help with a problem, I highly recommend that you check out Pam Johnson's book "Twisted Whiskers".
New Approach - Bad Format.......1999-08-13
Milani's book definitely had the potential to make you really think about your relationship with your cat. The problem was the format was so bad you ended up just skipping over the long, involved questions provided for you. The book has some really good information for new and experienced cat owners alike. However, unless you are really dedicated to reading the book, most likely you'll lose interest.
Below are the main problems I found with the text:
*Almost all cases she followed were purebreds. All sorts of different owners, but only purebred cats. She fails to take into account that 90% of cat owners own mixed-breed cats.
*She presents the mixed breed cat as inferior to a purebred and states the view that cats adopted from a shelter rather than bought from a breeder have more behavioral and psychological problems. The short amount of time she spent on animal shelters was merely to warn people not to adopt an animal there. The author claimed that the animals end up there because they have behavioral problems. She also states that most cats in shelters have litterbox problems. She gives no data to back up these sweeping statements, and in fact the number one reason animals end up in shelters is OWNER PROBLEMS (moving, allergic, costs too much).
*The format of the book was hard to read. Lots of information was packed into long paragraphs with no illustrations, charts or graphs. With a better layout the good information she provides could be noted rather than passed over.
