Book Description

"What kinds of investors actually choose to make their living by seeking out troubled companies and becoming mired in the complexities and contentiousness of a bankruptcy or out-of-court workout?" - Hilary Rosenberg (from The Vulture Investors)

Welcome to the big-time, big-stress-and big-profit-world of vulture investing. From the eleventh-hour save of Donald Trump's casinos, to the tempestuous history of Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel, to the rocky restructuring of the massive Revco discount drugstore chain, Hilary Rosenberg takes us on a fast-moving journey through some of the major bankruptcies of the 1980s and 1990s-and brings to life the infamous, talented arbiters at the heart of their recovery. Meet the so-called "vulture investors" who cast their sights on distressed concerns, buy out debt, and skillfully forge their way to rich returns. Quietly upstaging the flashier corporate tycoons and raiders of the previous decade, men like Leon Black, Ronald LaBow, Sam Zell, Talton Embry, and Martin Whitman have helped to make a more efficient market in this obscure sector of investment, and their success may even inspire the quickly evolving business cultures of Asia and Latin America.

The vulture investors made their way to the forefront of American business during the troubled period when declaring bankruptcy became commonplace among debt-heavy companies. Buying out debt and seeing through the rehabilitation of companies as well-known as Sunbeam and Bloomingdale's, these unique players have changed the face of the distressed securities market. In her own animated, absorbing, and original style, Hilary Rosenberg creates thoroughly researched reenactments of the vultures' greatest exploits to offer an intriguing examination of their methods and their madness-and reveals the important role of these controversial characters in aiding worldwide economic recovery.

Praise for The Vulture Investors

"A lively account of the hardy band of investors who look for-and find-gold in capitalism's junk pile. Rosenberg not only tells their stories with captivating relish but weighs the overall economic impact of their exploits. This book is a valuable introduction to 1990s-style deal-making." - Chris Welles, Senior Editor, Business Week

"In a tour de force of punchy business writing, Rosenberg dissects a little-known but increasingly common high-stakes financial game: preying on companies in distress. . . . The author relates these intricate, suspenseful narratives in a clear, lively style that always instructs and often amuses." - Publishers Weekly

"Reads like a good suspense novel." - Library Journal

5 out of 5 stars One of the best!!!!!.......2006-08-16

What a great read! To say that this book is Educational & Entertaining does not do it justice. The author takes you into a world of high finance and even higher stakes as companies hang in the balance & investors fight for profits.

The author does a great job of taking a very, very complex business and breaking it down so that most readers can understand the world of "Vulture Investors".

4 out of 5 stars Insightful...except the update.......2005-08-17

Great book, interesting stories.

The update is not worth the extra dollars though

5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2005-08-13

As usual, Ms. Rosenberg has written an outstanding book that is clear and compelling. Although it is a business book I will be brave and say it is also entertaining. This makes Vulture investments clear to an English major. I have bought several and recommend it to all friends.

1 out of 5 stars A WASTE OF MONEY AND A TIME.......2005-05-16

I found this book to be a complete waste of time and money. The book has very little substance, it is highly and extremely boring. Every story sounds the same and absolutely NO attention is paid to how the vultures decide what firm to buy into.

4 out of 5 stars Review of Vulture Investors, By Professor John Kercheval.......2005-05-09

This is an excellent book for those interested in the small field of Vulture Capital. It outlines numerous transactions across a diverse range of industry groups and gives the novice an idea of how these transactions are effected. Excellent and highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars The Shadow back in print at last!.......2007-07-08

The Shadow is back after a long absence from book shelves, movies and television. The Shadow has been out of print since the early 1970's, when Pyramid books published 23 paperback reprints of the classic pulps, with beautiful Jim Steranko covers.
Now we have a fine series of reprints, with two novels for the price of one, reprinted with the original covers and interior illustrations. If you have never read a novel of the Shadow, then "Crime, Insured!" is a great introduction to the series. It is among the most fast paced and well written of the series which consisted of about 325 novels, mostly written by Walter Gibson, under the pen name Maxwell Grant.
For those who only know the Shadow from the old radio series, or the mediocre 1994 Alec Baldwin film, then prepare to meet the true Shadow. No mental powers which "cloud mens minds" here, just detective skills, muscle, and twin automatics. You'll also be intoduced to one of the most mysterious characters in popular fiction bar none.
Pulp fiction at its best. Buy it and read it. You won't regret it!

5 out of 5 stars The Golden Vulture and Crime Insured.......2007-03-26

Make sure you have time because when you start this book you will not stop until finished. The plots are viable today. I love the informative features regarding the writers.

5 out of 5 stars Great return of an old Hero.......2007-01-08

Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men?
The Shadow Knows!

The Shadow is a classic hero from the 1930's and 40's. He hasn't been seen since the 1994 film.

Well, now The Shadow is Back! in all his dark and mysterious glory! This book contains two full Shadow Novels from the original 1930's pulps.

The first novel, "Crime, Insured", introduces experienced and new Shadow fans to his brand of crime fighting, and also introduces quite a few of the people that are in his network of agents. The Shadow's agents are people who he has saved at some time in the past and they agreed to help him when he asked for it. The agents in this story are some of his most common and frequently used people. The story basically revolves around an insurance agency who thought of a new insurance scheme, where they insure the criminal for the crime they plan to commit! This is a great introduction to the shadow, and is full of action that shows how the Shadow operates. How the story wraps up adds a great surprise twist at the end!

The second story, "The Golden Vulture", was written by Lester Dent, and then edited by Walter Gibson. This story mixes the technology tricks that Doc Savage fans will recognize as Lester Dent's forte with the mysterious methods of The Shadow. This was the story that won Lester Dent the contract to write Doc Savage! A Great Shadow Story by two great authors!

If you like fast-driving action, mystery and heroic action, you'll love this book. If you are a fan of the Dark Knight, come see one of his first inspirations!

1 out of 5 stars WARNING: This author has been convicted of tax fraud.......2004-08-19

For anyone thinking of taking the advice in any of this author's books, think again. She has been convicted of conspiracy, four counts of mail fraud, two counts of using a false social security number, making a false statement in a passport application and five counts of failing to file a tax return. She is awaiting sentencing, and faces up to FIFTY YEARS in prison.

Obviously, her advice doesn't work.

2 out of 5 stars Questionable.......2003-06-17

Consists of examples, letters and legal documentation in the remote chance that you'll follow it and try to dispute paying any taxes. Maybe it works, maybe it doesn't .. but if you want to risk fines, legal fees and jail time to fight the system , this book is worth a look.

5 out of 5 stars You Need To Know How The Game is Played........2000-09-23

Lynne's first book, Vultures in Eagles Clothing, gives you the basics to get you started and win the battle against the IRS. Her new book shows you how to fight the IRS and win with specific tools for every contingency. When you confront the IRS with questions that there can only be one answer for according to Lynne's information and they won't respond after repeated attempts, you know she was right and you've won the battle. Just in case they want to make an example of you, this is the book that will stop the IRS dead in their tracks.

4 out of 5 stars Do your own back-up research.......2000-06-08

I read a Vulture in Eagles clothing first, and then read this. You should also do it in the same order. Don't just believe what is written, also don't just dismiss it. It is of the utmost importance that you do as I did and research what was written. You will then feel 100% confident that you are indeed paying an unlawful tax. I got a nice check and a small kind of apology from the IRS for illegally holding onto my money. But they sure do try to intimidate you, information is power and this book can give you the power to gain your God given right of freedom. That includes freedom from illegal and oppresive taxation. You draw your own conclusions and act on your own back-up research. Our Founding Fathers had it right, taxation in any form should be equal. The current format certainly isn't. It's time to stop the rot and put in place a tax that is more consistant with what our Founding Fathers wanted. Not to feed a bloated and out of control Federal Govenment and it's misleading and ominously silent sidekick, the federal Reserve. ( no more Federal than Federal Express)

5 out of 5 stars A must-have for your Bill Peet collection.......2007-07-04

Although not written in rhyme like so many of the other Bill Peet books, this one shines with its descriptive story-telling and fanciful sketches. We first fell in love with Bill Peet's work with the book "The Caboose Who Got Loose" and have since not lost the opportunity to own as many of his books as possible, since my sons never wanted to return the books to the library and insisted on purchasing copies to have "for keeps". I am sure you will like these stories with a moral as well.

5 out of 5 stars Eli: An Unkingly Lion.......2007-03-05

Eli the lion was once a proud king of the beasts, but now he is meek as a mouse. What brought about this change? Age. He's too old to romp and fight or even be kingly. Now he only wants to be left alone.

Unfortunately, because of a good deed he did, a flock of vultures want to be his friends. Well, even old has-been kings don't want to associate with vultures. They're "ugly old coots, flee-bitten beggers, and good-for-nothing grubby old bone-pickers" as far as he is concerned.

But they insist on hanging around and luckily for Eli they do. Because the Zoobangas want him, and he can't hide in the gunkazunk grass in the gumbazunka swamp. If you're wondering why and what, I don't blame you. A fun story to read. (Suitable for the primary grades.)

5 out of 5 stars A book from my childhood.......2006-09-11

I used to check this book out of the school library almost every week! I loved it so much that I looked all over the web to find it for my 3 year old daughter! What a special book.

5 out of 5 stars Great book........2000-05-08

My 8 year old daughter has just discovered Bill Peet books and she loves them. She loves to read, but these are the first books that she has expressed an interest in keeping and collecting. She has even asked for his autobiography! Bill Peet has brought a light and an excitement for reading that is wonderful to see! Not only are his books entertaining, but they have a moral to the story that is appreciated by the reader.

My daughter, Kelly, wrote her own comments about the book. They are:

"I liked the part when Eli saved the bird. I also liked it when the birds saved Eli! It was a very, very good book! I liked it very much!"

She just can't wait to get the next Bill Peet book that I can find for her! It will definitely be the summer of Bill Peet at our home.

Don't be afraid of the scare tactics by some of the review writers; I have no doubt that some of the ones who are trying to scare you away are government agents who don't want you to get your hands on the biggest ongoing fraud in our country; exchanging compensation for labor is a fundamental right and our constitution protects all American Citizens from taxation of our rights; by signing a W-2 or a 1040 you are invalidating your rights and giving the IRS jurisdiction over your life and property. Yes Lynne Meredith went to jail - making her one of the greatest heroes and Patriots of our day - are her writing infallable..? No,if you want sinless perfection go read the Bible. However reading this book will open your eyes to understanding and set you on the road to be a truth seeker and to find out for yourself by researching and uncovering the historical fraud that has been perptrated against us all.

4 out of 5 stars I couldn't put it down.......2005-08-02

I read this book in 1996. It was my first real look into the workings of our government, inparticular our income tax system. Most of the information is well documented and I was able to verify it through my own research. I've read other books since then and this one is in many ways the best. It angered me to find out the truth about income tax and I've been trying to educate others since reading this. I used Ms. Meredith's method to become income tax free and suffered no negative repercussions to date. However, I've since found other methods to be more straight forward and easily defensible. But, I still highly recommend this book for it's informative value.

Book Description

The Vulture and The Nigger Factory is an omnibus edition of the two highly successful novels from the early 1970s by one of America's most outspoken and important postwar commentators on race, politics, and culture. Digging the rhythms of the street, where the biggest deal life has to offer is getting high, The Vulture is a hip and fast-moving thriller set in lower Manhattan. The Nigger Factory is a scornful statement on the way in which human beings are conditioned to think that takes place on a conservative university campus in Virginia.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Politcal and Poetic.......2002-03-11

Even though I have heard the name, Gil Scott-Heron, I never thought about reading anything other than his poetry. But these two works are well worth reading.
The first novel, The Vulture, captured me and had me searching to find the truth. On the other hand, I could not ignore the politcal and social messages that ran throughout the work. The struggle between right, wrong, and survival was ever present. The story was great and I was totally shock at the end. The search for "Who killed John Lee?" sometimes got lost in other the other stories but I was always brought back to that main question. So in the end, I must say, job well done.
The second work, The Nigger Factory, hit me very close to home. With many family members (as well as myself) attending Black colleges I was draw in and connected with the characters and their need for change. The push and pull of those in power and those seeking change is some thing that I felt personally. Many of the descriptions made me think of my undergrad days. I could not help but laugh at the fact that some things never change.
Would I recommend these novels? YES. They are well worth your time.

Few people, writes Scott Weidensaul, are apathetic toward raptors. Once you've seen a hawk or a falcon or an eagle in action, you're likely to take an interest in how these great birds of prey make their homes in the world. If that interest has seized you--and well it should--then Weidensaul's encyclopedic guidebook to the world's principal raptor species, well illustrated with photographs, maps, and charts and full of detailed information, is an ideal companion.

Weidensaul addresses a range of questions, including the antiquity of the world's raptor species and their evolutionary history. (In this matter, his text is thoroughly up-to-date and includes the results of recent genetic research by which carrion-feeding New World vultures have been reclassified as relatives of the stork, and not of predatory hawks, eagles, and falcons.) He traces the fortunes of species such as the peregrine falcon, which had all but disappeared in North America by the 1960s owing to hunting, habitat destruction, and the use of deadly pesticides, but which has returned to the wild thanks to a vigorous program of reintroduction. Other success stories await, and Weidensaul offers helpful notes on building nest platforms and boxes, aiding injured birds, contributing to conservation groups, and otherwise seeing to it that raptors flourish. --Gregory McNamee

3 out of 5 stars A clarification from the author.......2001-01-02

Potential buyers need to be aware that this volume is a reissue of my 1996 book "Raptors: The Birds of Prey," which the publisher has released with a new title and cover art, but with no changes to the content. I am embarrassed to see that they have promoted it as though it was a new book; while I'm pleased the book is again in print, I believe they should have been more forthright in making clear that it is a reissue instead of an entirely new work -- Scott Weidensaul. Book Description

On 22 February 1895, a naval force laid siege to Brass, the chief city of the Ijo people of Nembe in Nigeria's Niger Delta. After severe fighting, the city was razed. More than two thousand people perished in the attack.

A hundred years later, the world was shocked by the murder of Ken Saro-Wiwa—writer, political activist, and leader of the Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People. Again the people of Nembe were locked in a grim life-and-death struggle to safeguard their livelihood from two forces: a series of corrupt and repressive Nigerian governments and the giant multinational Royal Dutch Shell.

Ike Okonta and Oronto Douglas pre-sent a devastating case against the world's largest oil company, demonstrating how (in contrast to Shell's public profile) irresponsible practices have degraded agricultural land and left a people destitute. The plunder of the Niger Delta has turned full circle as crude oil has taken the place of palm oil, but the dramatis personae remain the same: a powerful multinational company bent on extracting the last drop of blood from the richly endowed Niger Delta, and a courageous people determined to resist.

2 out of 5 stars Over the top.......2007-09-24

The one good thing I will say is that this is essentially the only source of information about Shell and the conflict in Nigeria.

Unfortunately, it comes across as agenda-driven and biased. The authors make Shell employees out to be the evil landlords in the 1920s movies who twirl their mustaches and tie orphans to railroad tracks.

Everyone knows that Shell has taken advantage of a corrupt, rent-seeking government and they have been dangerously irresponsible with the environment that was entrusted to them. Everyone knows that they are making money, corrupt politicians are making money and overall, Shell being in Nigeria is not helping average Nigerians much. This book takes those problems and pushes their intent, criminal culpability and predisposition to evil past the limits of believability.

The authors have vested interests in the power struggles and they are not in any way objective, nor do they try to be so. Their agenda is pushed hard from page one.

In addition to a cartoonish view of Shell and their employees as evil vampires, the native Ogoni people are made out to be the exalted Noble Savages found in 19th century literature.

When you read this book, then read the newspaper, something doesn't connect. The people who are fighting Shell are simply local and regional gangland-style powerbrokers who are most likely a bigger threat to the Ogoni than Shell could ever hope to be, even at their mustache-twirling worst. It is hard to reconcile the author's view of the anti-Shell movements as being non-violent (a term constantly used to describe indigenous reaction) when some of these groups kidnap toddlers and hold them for ransom.

On the positive side, I learned more about Ken Saro-Wiwa from reading this book, which was good, but not much else in the book helped. Outisde of learning the names of some of the groups and getting dates to research further, this book is a waste of time.

4 out of 5 stars Corporate imperialism at its worst.......2006-08-08

This book provides an insightful history of how the Royal Shell Corporation and other oil companies have destroyed the environment and societies of the Niger Delta. The book starts with a short history of Western colonialism from the 1600s to the WWII. Starting with the discovery of oil post WWII, Shell Oil, along with Mobil, Texaco, Agip, BP and Chevron have replaced western governments as the de facto rulers of this region. The oil companies obtain oil from the Niger Delta, sell it, and use some of the profits to pay Nigerian government officials to safeguard their pipelines and oilwells in the country. The latter often includes torturing and killing locals who protest the pollution from oil drilling, flaring, and oil spills. All of this is glossed over by a multi-million dollar PR campaign by the Shell and the other oil companies.

The authors of this book document the history of environmental pollution in this area by citing specific oil spills, gas flares, and pipeline breaks. The authors also give a detailed history of the actions committed by Shell and its henchmen within the Nigerian goverment in order to suppress the natives of the Niger Delta. These include outright lies to the local people, stalling action by forming committees, intimidation of local leaders, etc...

Overall, this book shows the worst of corporate greed within the 20th century. The book is well argued and easy to read with lots of references. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Great book!.......2007-06-12

I have two sons (ages 6 and 8) who both really enjoy this Ricky Ricotta series. After reading the reviews on the paperback versions of these books being flimsy, we decided to spend the extra money and get the hardcover books. They are super! We'll enjoy them for several years to come...then pass them on to other friends/family when we're ready to.

3 out of 5 stars A Great Battle.......2002-02-08

It was a good book because of the great battle. The voodoo vultures from venus sure did get a a good beating. The pictures are really great. Rickys Ricotta's Robot is really mighty robot. I think Kindergardeners - Second grade would like this book a whole lot.

5 out of 5 stars Ricky Ricotta's Giant Robot vs.Voodoo Vultures from Venus.......2001-03-04

I'm just nuts for this series of Ricky books that my mommy has bought me. I can't wait till number 4 comes out! The Mecha-Monkeys from Mars.I'm sure my mommy's is getting tired of reading the same three books to me night after night.thank you Mr.Pilkey!!

3 out of 5 stars Not as strong.......2001-02-13

Ricky Ricotta's Giant Robot Vs. the Voodoo from Venus isn't as strong an outing as the previous two books in this series. But it's still a good read.

Ricky and his robot are in trouble at home and lose their tv privileges. This allows them to avoid being hypnotized by a vulture bad guy on Venus who wants to (you guessed it) take over Earth. As usual, Ricky is resourceful and the Robot is strong and the good guys save the day.

Book Description

Told in anecdotal form, Vulture's Row tells a fascinating story about an important period covering nearly one half of the entire history of U.S. naval aviation. "Vulture's Row" is an area dubbed by naval flyers, on the island structure of an aircraft carrier where pilots who aren't flying can overlook carrier launchings and recoveries on the deck below. This new book by acclaimed author Paul Gillcrist is a series of true stories about the U.S. Navy carrier aviation from the perspective of a Navy pilot who spent thirty-three years directly involved in that exciting profession. The book begins with a series of vignettes in the period of the mid-1950s when the U.S. Navy introduced swept wing, jet-powered fighters into the aircraft carrier navy, flying from straight-deck carriers whose flight decks were made of teak wood. The thread of stories follows the author's career in chronological sequence, in various venues throughout the Navy. There are accounts from his first carrier deployment to the western Pacific, followed by events as a weapons delivery instructor at the predecessor to TOPGUN in El Centro, California. Some of his experiences as a Navy pilot are recorded in a section about Patuxent River, Maryland, the Navy's test center. Additional episodes include an unforgettable wing-walking flight. flying Japanese Zeros in the movie TORA!TORA!TORA! and the author's subsequent tour of duty in Pentagon conducting proficiency flights from our nation's capital. There are also accounts of combat missions over Vietnam and the author's experiences in both wing commander jobs, flying the F-4 Phantom II and the F-14 Tomcat. The last story is about his two flights, as a fifty-two year old Admiral, in the controversial F-20 Tigershark. These vignettes combine humor, hair-raising excitement and tragedy. Rear Admiral Paul T. Gillcrist, a U.S. Navy fighter pilot, served also as a test pilot and weapons delivery instructor, and actively flew from sixteen aircraft carriers for over twenty-seven years. The author writes with authority as a former fighter squadron commanding officer who recorded 167 combat missions over Vietnam flying the F-8 Crusader. Subsequently, he commanded a carrier air wing and finally served, the rank of Rear Admiral, as the wing commander for all pacific Fleet fighter squadrons. His pilot's logbook includes over 6,000 hours, in seventy-one different types of aircraft from 1952 to 1981. He retired in 1985 as Assistant Deputy Chief of Naval Operations(air Warfare). He is also the author of TOMCAT!The Grumman F-14 Story, and CRUSADER! Last of the Gunfighters(both titles are available from Schiffer Publishing Ltd.). , over 100 color and b/w photographs, 6" x 9"

5 out of 5 stars As the author, I felt a need to describe carrier aviation.......1998-06-29

(Author) Flying from sixteen different carriers over a 27 year carrier flying career, I have seen some amazing things, participated in events and with people whom the reader might find hard to believe. These are vignettes intended to bring those experiences to readers in terms they can appreciate. Enjoy!!!
