1 out of 5 stars Very little breed specific information.......2006-12-20

The fact that this book is mostly made up of generic dog information is only part of the problem. I picked up this book because I wanted more information on Yorkies specifically. Since Yorkies are so small, there's a lot of stuff that may be different when caring for them as compared to, say, a Golden Retriever. Don't get me wrong; much of that kind of information is universal, and it is helpful to know the things that apply to all dogs. But this book is being sold as a book about caring for Yorkies, and that is what I expected. There are many generic dog care books out there, and frankly, many of them are much better than this one.

Aside from that, this book is poorly written and edited. I found many grammatical and syntactic errors in the first few chapters.

I also have Yorkshire Terriers for Dummies, and I think it is a much better book than this one. Choose that one instead.

5 out of 5 stars Your Yorkshire Terrier's Life.......2006-03-22

Great book for anyone who is planning on getting a Yorkie and an awesome reference for you after you get your Yorkie !! I have had my 2 Yorkies for 4 weeks and have referenced it MANY times. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Your Yorkshire Terriers Life.......2006-03-15

Alot of good information I didn't know. Very helpful for someone who has never had one of these unique little doggies. This book probably helped to save my puppies life by describing symptoms of a genetic disease common to Yorkies I kept persuing answers to my dogs unusual behavior. He eventalyy was diagnosed with a liver shunt and under went surgery 2 weeks ago. All is GREAT now.

4 out of 5 stars A lot of health information........2004-06-22

I found this book to be helpful. I am not yet a Yorkie owner but a Yorkie owner in training. This book has a great deal of health-related information about Yorkies, including the standards tips for raising a puppy vs. an adult dog. It was very similar to The Complete Idiot's Guide to Yorkshire Terriers, by Liz Palika, which I liked better for the information regarding potty training and obedience training.

5 out of 5 stars Clear advice for new Yorkie owners.......2004-04-09

I've been researching purchasing a Yorkie puppy (as a pet and companion not to show or breed) and this is the best of the books on caring for the breed that I've read thus far. I started with Janet Jackson's book and the Complete Idiot's Guide to Yorkshire Terriers by Liz Palika. Both are very good, but I found Gewirtz's book to be more thorough for my needs. It doesn't just stress the importance of socialization or obedience training, but tells you the right age to begin these processes. Also, the information is presented in a clear, well-organized fashion. It's simply easier to find the information you need. Obviously, you shouldn't just buy one book on the breed or raising your dog, but this should definitely be on your list.

5 out of 5 stars Primer for every first time bornder collie owner!.......2007-08-10

An essential book for every new border collie owner. This book covers all the basics: from puppy selection to rearing, from training to feeding. This IS your reference manual. Call is 'Border Collies for Dummies'. I am new to the breed, and these dogs truly are differernt. So glad to have found this book. Don't let other reviewers steer you away: this book is definitely about border collies. I recommend buying 2-3 books on border collies, since there will be differing perspectives and opinions on some matters. Also, there are unique insights that other breeders/experts bring to raising and owning a border collie. Either The Ultimate Border Collie or The Working Border Collie is a good companion to this book.

5 out of 5 stars Insightful.......2003-10-06

This is a well written, easy to read, guide. The authors are knowledgeable and expressive. Subject coverage is complete and this book is an excellent addition to one's BC library.

3 out of 5 stars Too Nonspecific.......2002-10-14

This book is okay, but I was disappointed to see how much general dog information is included in the book. This information applies to all dogs, not just Border Collies. I've got many books to use as a resource for this type of general info. I am looking for Border Collie specific information and found only a small part of this book dedicated strictly to Border Collies. Very disappointing.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful book! A real Winner.......2001-03-03

If you have any questions on Border Collies, this is the book to have!I was very impressed. It is filled with all kinds of doggie tips & fun facts. This covers all aspects of this wonderful dog.It includes chapters on why you might want a Border Collie, preparing to bring you dog home, grooming, training, and for those of you who already have a Border Collie, curbing the herding instinct & correcting problems such as barking or biting. A wonderful book to have, I loved it.

5 out of 5 stars A very informative book about Border collies.......2001-02-26

This book is a wonderful book if you want to know all about border collies. It offers a detailed description of all aspects of dog care, breed-specific training tips, and all the facts about Border Collies. If you are thinking about getting a border collie puppy or adult this is a very informative resource. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book for Lab Owners!.......2007-09-13

Gives you a great insight into this wonderful breed and excellent hints at both home, obedience and field training!

4 out of 5 stars Nice Compendium Of Information On Labradors!.......2004-06-01

Here is an attractive entry by author Virginia Parker Guidry, abook that takes a loving look at America's singular and by far most popular wonder dog, the Labrador Retriever. As Berger points out so well, there are few other animals who draw such love from humans as a dog, and surely the Lab is the most loveable of the breeds. Here she presents the Labrador Retriever in all its wonder and does a yeoman service to the rest of us by enumerating all of the superb qualities the dog has to offer potential human enthusiasts. They are by reputation excellent working dogs, both as field dogs and as guide dogs for the disabled. They are also incredibly loyal, and the news services are often filled with wonderful and heartwarming stories of Labs crawling out on the ice to save their masters, often at considerable danger to themselves. Nonetheless, they stand by our sides.

Therefore, this book, "Your Lab's Life", is the ultimate tribute to the breed, and is chock-full with stories and photos that actively serve to substantiate what might otherwise seem as idle boasts and overethusiastic praise. In fact, for anyone who spends any time around Labs, like me, it is hard nto to use superlatives when describing them. More than one of the stories herein will bring a smile to your face, a tear to your eye, and the idea in your noggin perhaps it is time to consider getting one of these incredible creatures into you rlife, and that of your extended family. they boost the energy level in any room they enter, are incredible chick-magnets, and have been shown to reduce high blood pressure and dissipate depression through their mere presence. This is a wonderful book about what I believe to be the world's most nearly perfect living creature, the Labrador Retriever! Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Recommended reading for new owners........2004-03-23

My lab is recently acquired and is 4 years old and is a family pet. I found the book to be very informative in caring and for training. The book covers just about anything you would want to know and would work for puppies also.

2 out of 5 stars Nothing here that you won't find elsewhere.......2003-09-24

It was a good book to read, but it had NOTHING on training a lab how to retrieve. It gave a few instructions on basic dog commands, but I found similar tips in many other books. If you are looking for a guide to training your lab, this isn't for you.

3 out of 5 stars Great Book ...Missing information.......2002-09-27

I ordered this book based on all the reviews thinking that this was the one and only Lab book needed.... I have 2 PureBreed Labs and in speaking both with my Vet and other breeders thought I may have a litter. This book does not support the idea of breeding or yet the reproductive aspects of the Lab at all. If someone plans to own a Lab just for a pet and doesn't intend to ever think of it's reproductive health or need that information then yes..... this is a SUPER book! I agree with the author's advice about neutering and spaying to keep the population down, however feel for this to be called the only book you'll ever need... I disagree. Look else where for the reproductive information on your beloved pet! The format and layout of the book as well as the reading material is better than most books I've read. I will now be looking for yet more books on breeding.

3 out of 5 stars Get yourself a lil poodie.......2004-03-24

I have owned Labrador Retrievers for years. Due to my marriage, and the loss of my last Lab, I married into a 7.5 lb. poodles life. Is it a dog, really? After all, Poodles have "hair not fur"...this is the most adorable, intelligent, sensitive lil creature, and I adore her. I take her out into the field with me, so that she can be a real dog, and she is a specimen to behold. Get a poodle. Love it, and nurture it, and it becomes just one of the family...as for the book, just get a poodle, they will teach you....

3 out of 5 stars Not exactly 'complete'........2003-09-16

This was my first poodle book...accompanied by my first poodle. It's limited in scope and calling it 'complete' is not accurate. However, it was sufficient for starters.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Book for First Time Poodle People.......2003-04-12

This is an excellent book about all-around poodle care. There is good information (that I have not seen in any other book) about feeding a natural diet and the aging process, as well as general care and grooming. Though one reviewer felt there was too much "caution" about adopting a poodle, I feel it is appropriate. Poodles love people and require near constant grooming to look and feel their best, and they need an owner who knows they need a lot of care and time.

2 out of 5 stars Not impressed.......2002-03-10

The authors seemed to spend more time asking you if you really, really, really want to get a poodle, considering all the work and money they take, than on giving valuable information. Not very helpful to those of us who already have a poodle and want to learn more about our dog/puppy, and caring for them. It does have chapters on care and grooming, etc, but for the first several chapters it seemed to be cautioning people away from getting a poodle, at least that was the impression I had.

1 out of 5 stars Looking for better.......2001-10-15

I've been looking for a goood poodle primer and found this at the local bookstore. It is a near-replica of a number of other cokkie-cutter books by similar titles on other breeds. There was little poodle-specific information ... most of the pages were general dog-related information.

4 out of 5 stars A dog-saver!!.......2007-06-21

I bought this after I adopted a year-old female beagle from a shelter. I didn't know what I had let myself in for!! Beagles, being "hound" dogs, march to the beat of a different drummer. . .i.e., their noses!! This book really helped me understand what drives beagles and address the issues of re-training her for her new home. I now keep it as a reference, to remind myself that I was the one needing training in Beagle-speak!!!

4 out of 5 stars Great book for people who have never had a Beagle........2002-03-14

I have had several diffent breeds of dogs over my lifetime, but never had a beagle. We rescued our Beagle in Virginia where we were Camping with our RV. She had been wandering the campground since May The people who worked at the campground discovered her wandering and found she had recently had puppies because her nipples were pink and here it was August and no one had claimed her, The people who worked for the campground who took care of her were told by the manager if she is not adopted or claimed by September she will have to go to the pound. This was very upsetting to my husband and I. I went to the library and searched for books related to Beagles I read several and found this one to be the most informative for housebreaking, training, and giving information about beagles, their characteristics and temperment. I recommend this book to anyone who never had a beagle and those who already own one it will be useful to both.

5 out of 5 stars BEAGLES -- THE HOUND OF CHOICE.......2000-10-31

I have a wonderful beagle that I adopted from the Humane Society when she was a little less than a year old. This book gives an excellent overview in the overall care and personality of beagles. The photographs will certainly delight any dog lover and especially anyone who owns a beagle. These winsome, intelligent, alert little hounds are popular pets and this book is a welcome teaching tool for those seriously interested in beagle care. This author has done an excellent job of communicating information that practically all ages can absorb. For beagle lovers and/or beagle owners, this is one book to have.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference Book.......2000-05-23

I adopted a 3yr old Beagle from the pound a year ago and wish I had had this book. It tells you all about Beagle personality and how to help correct problems specific to the breed. The author really did her homework talking to breeders and current beagle owners. In addition to beagle-specific topics, there is a lot of good general "how to raise a dog" information. I highly recommend this book for those who are currently owned by a Beagle (or will be in the future).

3 out of 5 stars Helpful but lacking revelations.......2002-03-14

Prety much your typical how-to for dogs book. I expected to learn more but it's pretty much a beginner book with lots of harsh and critical "do you really deserve a shepherd?" righteous indignation. I guess they figure you'd really buy a book about shepherds if you didn't have one???

Anyway, it's helpful but certainly not required reading.

4 out of 5 stars Nicely Done.......2000-04-04

This book is worth buying. It has many good tips and information of german shepherds. Lots of pictures of nice looking shepherds. Read it from cover to cover and use it as a reference.

This book is AWESOME! It has everything you need to know about the chihuahua breed and is right on the money with everything it says. If you are a first time chihuahua owner or are thinking about one, you MUST read this wonderful book.

2 out of 5 stars Buy The Chihuahua Handbook by Caroline Coile Instead.......2002-01-17

This book provides an adequate level of information about chihuahuas, but if you're really looking for a book that will answer ALL of your questions, buy _The Chihuahua Handbook_ by Dr. Caroline Coile instead. It's more well written than this book, and it provides greater detail in a wide variety of subjects, and includes more up-to-date information on subjects such as diet, breeding, training, etc.,. Kim Thornton's _Your Chihuahua's Life_ treats the chihuahua like it's just a smaller version of any other dog, and any chihuahua owner knows that's just not true. Do yourself a favor, and buy the other book.

5 out of 5 stars Everything you you ever wanted to know about Chihuahuas.......2000-08-25

I previously bought Chihuahuas-A Complete Owner's Manual by Barron's
and found it very helpful and specific. But now that I read Your
Chihuahua's Life I feel the Owner's Manual kind of sparse. I love
both books. The Owner's Manual has more pictures and a glossier
appearance, but the Complete Guide by Kim Thornton is definitely the
most comprehensive book on Chihuahuas I have seen so far. Being a
first time Chihuahua owner, I was astounded how accurately she
described and predicted the little quirks and behavior oddities of
these little guys. Unlike most breed books this book is clearly a
breed specific book. I found many other books to explain the breed
standard and history and then be almost identical in every other
aspect (training, health care, etc). This book is different. Many
things of specific importance to Chis (and no other breed) are
included in each of the very comprehensive chapters like Training,
etc. A big plus in this book for prospective owners is that she
describes the personality so accurately and realisticly. Most other
breed books will just describe their featured breed in the best
light. After reading this book you will know, if a Chihuahua is the
right dog for you, what to watch out for, and how to properly take
care of these little guys. My suggestion is buy Barron's Pet Owner's
Manual for the pictures and an introduction to the breed...and get Thornton's book for an indepth study.

5 out of 5 stars A Real Winner.......1999-12-16

I have been a dog owner for many a year and have read many a book on dogs! So, what's so special about this one? Plenty. First off, most books are about puppies, old dogs or sick dogs. This is the first book that deals with the first two years of a dog's life: that incredible period from puppyhood to doghood. Secondly, it's not technical nor is it condescending: it's written in the language that most of us speak. The chapters are chock-full of valuable, common-sense information, and the insets provide lots of little known facts that are well-worth keeping in mind. I had a hard time putting it down once I received it. It's great reading! I've already purchased three additional copies for gifts and have highly recommended it to my friends and colleagues. In short, it's a real winner! Go for it, folks, you won't regret it.

2 out of 5 stars Low Information Content.......2003-04-20

This book is very long on lauditory rhetoric for golden retrievers, but the density of practical information is low. What and how much should my dog eat? High quality food and enough but not too much. The breeder gave me a little pamphlet issued by Purina that had the same basic information that I got from this book in about 3 pages.

5 out of 5 stars My Dog Schroeder.......2002-09-20

After waiting over two decades to embark on the creation of a Golden Retriever family, I soon found that I was embarking on much more than my first baby's pretty face. Schroeder was a giant handful from the time he was born! My husband said, "What have you adopted, a baby who wants to sleep in our bed and play fetch there too?"

Betsy's text describes quite precisely the nature of our two Golden Retrievers and her advise will ensure that your Golden develops physically and psychologically healthy and you will too--so long as you follow the "rules". Without a thorough understanding of my dog's not only family oriented but, generally, people oriented nature that requires plenty of games and exercise (outside), Schroeder would have continued being very eager to take me anywhere by my shirt, and he probably would have succeeded before he was full grown. So, I consider myself lucky that I outran him to the bookstore beforehand and picked up Betsy's book. We now have a healthy, happy home with two Goldens. Yes, I can now resume graduate school knowing that my "kids" are happy at home without ball and bottle in my hand for several hours per day.

In sum, I recommend this book as a must read for those considering a Golden family member. Again, these dogs are extremely active, loving and family oriented and need to be treated with this understanding. If this type of companion is in your reality, even training becomes a joy. Otherwise, try another one of her books--you can't miss with Betsy but you could avoid your seemingly empirical perception of a pretty face quickly changed if your golden son rises without you.

PS. I would like to hear from Betsy concerning my "essential" goats.

3 out of 5 stars Lacking in many areas..........2001-04-24

Not a bad book, gives some decent advice on care. But it leaves out information on a lot of things. It doesn't even mention that there are differences between hunting and showing lines, and actually makes no mention of hunting except to say that Goldens were once used for hunting. With hunting being such a big part of the Golden Retriever's history (not to mention modern life), it should've gotten a bigger mention. Also, the training section was very simplistic.

4 out of 5 stars This book has everything.......2000-05-07

This is a wonderful reference for prospective or current owners of a Golden Retriever, but especially for someone who has a new Golden puppy. I bought this book as soon as we had decided on a Golden when the litter was 4 weeks of age so I could do a lot of reading before the puppy came home. The author is "right on" when it comes to the breed. She accurately describes all of its best traits as well as its shortcomings regarding food allergies, skin allergies, etc. She tells you exactly what to look for in a new puppy and what to avoid. There are no surprises about the breed once you have read this book. It covers all aspects regarding feeding, grooming, bonding, training, living with an older dog - everything you will encounter over the years with your dog. If you have any doubts, check this book out at your local library or bookstore . . .
