Book Description
Kim Sheridan grew up with animals as her constant companions. Each time she faced the death of a beloved pet, along with the pain came the same questions, to which she could find no answers. Then, mysterious things began to happen that she couldn’t explain, which led her on an incredible journey to uncover the truth. Along with her own extraordinary experiences, she compiled heartwarming and meaningful true stories of everyday people around the world, and discovered compelling evidence that forever erased her own doubts about an afterlife for animals.
This book provides enormous comfort and reassurance to anyone who has ever cherished a pet, and food for thought for anyone who has ever questioned the place of these beloved creatures in the larger scheme of things, both here on Earth and beyond.

EXCELLANT.......2007-10-03
Loosing a 'friend' is never easy....for some, as with myself....tramatic..it has been two months.....
but with Kim Sheridan.........and the stories.....it has helped, given me hope and some peace.
I DO NOT recommend Sylvia Browne's book 'Spirit of Animals"..it is a picture book with two minutes of reading time......and you do not feel any better for it.
This book gives you hope, peace, and that just maybe you and your friend will meet again on THIS side.............
Animals and the Afterlife.......2007-09-06
This book was so helpful in easing the pain of losing a beloved pet. Kim
Sheridan's writing is informative, compassionate and insightful. I would recommend this book to anyone who is grieving a companion animal.
Fantastic Book.......2007-09-05
Once I got started reading this book, it was hard to put down. After reading this book I have the comfort of knowing that the 2 pets I just recently lost are still close by. I was touched by the wonderful stories that were shared by other people. I would highly recommend this book.

an emtional warm blanket.......2007-03-18
kim's book has been answered prayers for myself and many family members and friends.i cannot imagine how she was able to pick and choose through so many broken hearts to help us. i shed tears while reading this book both from grief and joy and allowed myself a sense of peace and understanding of transition that i had not learned even after a lifetime of critical care nursing. i appreciate the authors' respect for all life, and the different ways it is celebrated, mourned and honoured throughout the world. i appreciate greatly the biblical referances and the beautiful quotations. even though i miss my family greatly, i rejoice in knowing they will meet me at the rainbow bridge....thankyou kim, bless you and your work...looking forward to the next book....hurry!!!

Thoughts to live by........2007-01-09
I found this book at a very low point in my life. I picked this book up at my vet's office and read it while a procedure was being done on my very ill puppy. It lifted my spirits, and gave me some much needed hope. Both my puppy and I are doing much better!
You too can have a well behaved happy dog!.......2006-07-09
This book is an excellent introduction to the world of dogs and how they impact on our lives. As a pet therapy partner with my dog, Coco, I recommend this book to everyone who is involved with their pets and what to have some real insight into their animals' behavior and needs.
K-9 simplicity.......2001-12-06
A delightful pictorial of how dogs of all ages and breeds can teach us the basic and simple lessons in life. Each picture is accompanied by a telling phrase that gets the message across. The table of contents includes such subjects as Health, Self Esteem, and Day-to-Day living. In the end the author sums it up with a smiling golden lab with a lolling yet perfect pink tongue, below him is the inscription, "Life is, on the whole, pretty doggone good". That just about says it all.
I found myself enjoying the pictures as well as the wisdom imparted. It is a book I am able to pick up again and again. My favorites being the chocolate lab puppies. This is a cute book for the dog lover in your family. Kelsana 12/05/01
A beautiful and heartwarming little book.......2001-07-15
Excellent photography combines with pithy phrases to create a collection of wisdoms shared by anyone who has lost his or her heart to a dog. Just over 100 pages are devoted to sections "On Health," "On Self-Esteem," "On Interacting With Others," "On Self-Improvement," and "On Day-to-Day Living." And what words of wisdom these are! Those who DON'T own dogs would do well to pull this book out now and then to gain some perspective on the things that really are important in life, scaled down to essential simplicity. A ridiculous little dog with fangs bared is captioned, "If you are mean, people will try to avoid you." Break out this book when the mean, fang-baring people of the world get you down.
An excellent gift for the dog lover friend or family member.......1999-10-27
This picture and saying book captures the heart and soul of all dogs everywhere, from the most carefree puppy to the most loyal senior canine citizen. It reminds us to not take life so seriously in our hectic world, and enjoy the basic and mundane of life, for that is where joy is truly found. It reminds us of the most common courtesies often forgotten in this man-eat-man world. All life's lessons can be learned from a dog, and they are in here, in some of the most poignant, beautiful, and joyful pictures I have yet seen of our beloved dogs. Worth it as a gift for yourself, your friends, your family.

Customer Reviews:
Stylish sweaters that fit the dog!.......2007-05-07
I love this author. LOVE. I've made two of the sweaters and plan to make another. Her designs range from something basic a beginner could tackle to projects advanced knitters enjoy producing. She explains how to get the right fit if the three sizes she offers aren't quite right. The dog I was knitting for is a hard fit in *everything* my friend tries to buy him because he's not really a large and not really a medium. After taking the various measurements and adjusting the pattern in just the right places, "Andy" now looks great. This was an exercise for me in "adjusting" patterns before I tackle an Aran for my husband so the little Aran in the book was perfect for my needs. Can't wait to make the party dress.
The only warning I would give is that these patterns aren't for truly big dogs. The patterns can be adjusted, but most folks with a big dog aren't going to find a pattern ready to go in here. A beagle is her medium size.
Keeping Your Dog Warm (and fashionable).......2006-10-29
The book features a variety of styles to suit all tastes and to fit different sizes of dogs. There's a cable stitch sweater, an Icelandic design, and others plus some blankets and a pillow for your dog. The directions seem very detailed.
The book starts off with instructions for measuring your dog and adjusting the patterns. It continues with a glossary and 5 pages of basic techniques before plunging into the actual patterns.
The photos are charmers showing dogs modeling the outfits. The author even throws in a recipe for a flea shampoo and doggie snacks. Sprinkled throughout the book is trivia about dogs (popular dog names, quotations, background on the models). The dogs modeling the knitted projects are just adorable.
I'm giving this as a gift to a neigbor who is talented with handwork. Her two dogs will look adorable in these outfits.
Sloppy Writing/Proofreading.......2006-07-31
This is a sloppily written book full of errors. I had to rip out most of the basketweave cardigan on page 29 because the number of stitches instructed by one section of the pattern does not match the number specified in another paragraph. The patterns seem written to save print space at the expense of clarity and accuracy. I am an experienced (15+ years)knitter, and I found the instructions to be very complicated to follow, requiring the knitter to write the pattern out in longhand so not to miss any steps. This pattern was even described as "perfect for a beginning knitter". Buy this book for the cute pictures if you like, but if you decide to knit from it, work the pattern out on paper first.
Great Patterns; Wrong Sizes.......2005-10-10
I thought the patterns were fun and was anxious to make many of them; however, the patterns sizes were no where near what I needed for my Chihuahua. Even so my Chihuahua is of the portly/chubby type, the sizes were still too big. I consider myself an intermediate knitter; yet in all honesty, having to re-guage a pattern, change the cast-on, the measurements, the inc's, dec's, etc etc etc is too much of a bother. Don't get me wrong, I always gauge my work and if I have to adjust a few sts here and there and/or change ndl sizes, I'm ok with that... I just don't want to reinvent the whole pattern.
Sizes in the book.......2005-09-28
While there are some interesting sweaters in this book, her concept of SIZE is so far off, that the book was of no use to me. She is calling a size small, 14 1/2 inches around a dog. This is big on my full grown dachshund, would never work for a chihuahua or other dog considered a small dog. Also the length for a small dog is 12 inches according to her, my smaller sized dogs are around 8 or 9 inches long. The shaping of the basic sweaters would never work for a male dog, and it goes all the way back to the haunches. The other patterns in the book are equally "off" for small or even medium small dogs.

Book Description
Wherever humans have gone in the New World, dogs have been their companions, from the time people crossed the Bering Land Bridge some twenty thousand years ago.
In this remarkable history of the interaction between humans and dogs, Mark Derr looks at the ways in which we have used canines-as sled dogs and sheepdogs, hounds and Seeing Eye dogs, guard dogs, show dogs, and bomb-sniffing dogs-as he tracks changes in American culture and society. From the Spanish conquest of the Americas to the English colonial period, from the age of revolution to slavery, from World War II to the Vietnam War, Derr weaves a remarkable tapestry of heroism, betrayal, tragedy, kindness, abuse, and unique companionship. The result is an enlightening perspective on American history through the eyes of humanity's best friend.
Customer Reviews:
Torn between two opinions.......2006-02-19
I find the information contained in this book truly interesting, however the way it is written and structured makes it a difficult read. I am a tried and true dog lover, so the history of man's best friend fascinates me. I can't believe the buggers have put up with our mistreatment for so long! I am pushing myself through the book, because I crave the information, but the chronology and tangents have not made it easy. I am not sure how I personally would have structured it...maybe offering a visual time line...but I think a well-established writer could have done a little better.
A fascinating tale not only of canine loyalty, but of human betrayal.......2005-11-14
A Dog's History of America: How Our Best Friend Explored, Conquered, and Settled a Continent is the history of canine companions in America during the past three centuries - from sled dogs and war dogs to guide dogs, show dogs, and bomb-sniffing dogs. A fascinating tale not only of canine loyalty, but of human betrayal, including breeders' desire to shape animal's evolution so much that inbreeding was widely practiced despite scientific warnings and firsthand evidence of its role in causing birth defects. Not all tales of the dog are noble; some, particularly those victimized by the demand to create and aggressive breed, are notorious for turning on and sometimes even killing humans. A Dog's History of America strives to be thorough, objective, and balanced, portraying the truth as accurately as historical record tells it, and is a "must-read" for true dog lovers.
Gritty Reality .......2004-12-31
While I found the book basically well written and interesting, I think Derr digressed a little too far into the biographies of some historical figures, such as Columbus and Custer, spending a fair amount of time on details of their lives that didn't really have anything to do with dogs. In a number of instances the information about the dogs seemed rather sparse and the digressive material seemed to be more of a filler. I was also surprised at some of the descriptions of violence (how the dogs that Columbus brought over were used against the Caribe Indians, as an example). Based on these descriptions of violence, as well as some other adult topics, it might not be suitable for youthful readers and perhaps ought to be screened by parents first. Granted, the reality of the harshness with which both dogs and people have been treated in history should not be hidden, but I was expecting a book for a more general readership, and found the descriptions of violence rather disconcerting here. On the plus side, Derr describes at some length the variety of dog types that Native Americans had (far more than I had realized), and I enjoyed the details about the various types that immigrants brought with them, and what important working partners they were. Dogs contributed much, and this book elucidates just how valuable they've been to us.
Tracker-Outdoors.com Review of A Dogs History Of America.......2004-12-15
Tracker-Outdoors.com found Derr's writing compelling and very well researched. He kindly shows just how many places and events dogs have been involved with. Derr's tales of mayhem, heroism, exploration, hard work, betrayal, kindness, abuse and love demonstrates clearly the elements that attract people to dogs. History enthusiasts will enjoy the historic content within these pages tremendously. A Dog's History Of America tells the remarkable tales of American history that will inspire dog owners of all kinds. Overall, we found Derr's book fascinating reading but somewhat disturbing. Mark Derr explores the roles of sled dogs, dogs of war, guide dogs and show ring dogs from a historical perspective. We highly recommend A Dog's History Of America to dog lovers, history buffs and those interested in American culture.

An intriguing slant on history.......2004-12-06
From its arrival 20,000 years ago with the first settlers crossing from Siberia, to its present as inbred pedigree and drug-sniffing cop, Derr takes a comprehensive survey approach to the dog. He examines the major incidents of our history - Columbus (no dogs on his first voyage; a mistake he never made again!), the ruthless Spanish Conquistadors, the Civil War, the Depression, WWII and more - from the point of view of the dog's mostly overlooked contribution.
Although the fact-filled narrative does not conjure up a lot of personality, the loyal character of the dog quickly emerges as crucial. One man's best friend is that man's enemy's enemy. Again and again dogs are trained to attack and kill - the Conquistador stories and those of treeing runaway slaves are particularly gruesome.
Dog loyalty has more benign uses, of course, and Derr explores most of them, from herder and hunter to celebrity companion and adventurer. Explorers, from Lewis and Clark to Ernest Shackleton, have depended on dogs for companionship as well as hunting, guidance or transportation. But in times of trouble doggie devotion has often led to the final sacrifice - sustenance. That best-friend thing has never been totally mutual.
Derr's writing doesn't sparkle, but his breadth of research astounds, and there's a compelling feel to the narrative that comes from the canine slant on familiar history. Dog-loving history buffs will particularly enjoy it.

4 and a half stars: Beware of this Excellent Libro!!!!.......2007-03-26
This book has a wonderful message that is realistic AND you could learn to understand more Spanish!!! This book shows you that you shouldn't forsake your friends especially when they need you most. You may have friendships like this so you can relate easily. We enjoyed that the book left us with many questions at the end. Did Marisol find her father? Did Magdalena meet Ruben? It lets you use your imagination to create your own ending. If you choose to read this book, you will find that even though Marisol was sad about her father, she found a way to be happy. Hopefully, a lot of students can relate to this!
Buy This Book! It is the best! You'll learn about Panama and two girls' sisterhood and friendship........2007-03-26
What we liked about the book was that Marisol learns about her heritage. Also, at the end of the book, Marisol was capable of filling her life and heart with new loves. What we detested was that at the end it didn't say anything about Magdalena, Mami, and Lucho. Also, at times it gave too few details. Overall we definitely recommend this book.
Marisol and Magdelena the sound of our sisterhood.......2003-05-14
This book is the greatest book I've read on my level of reading. It shows a friend ship that will last. Ruben and marisol should have thier own book.It was fun reading: MARISOL AND MAGDELENA THE SOUND OF OUR SISTER HOOD
Made me want more!.......2000-08-23
I received this book as part of my teaching curriculum, and read it all in one afternoon. It's fast, light, and gives so many opportunities to start discussions on what it means to be from two (or more) cultures, it's scary. I thought it ended too soon, but maybe (hopefully) that's because Ms. Chambers plans to write more about Marisol and her friends. Certainly will draw kids in and the ending provides (at least for me) a chance to allow my students to continue Marisol's adventures and ask them, "What happens next?". Good job!
Just needs a little more depth to keep it intersting........1999-04-13
This is a light, contemporary story written for Hispanic American girls struggling with two cultural identities. For these readers, this book may fill a gap. However, most of the book moves too slowly. Were it not for the hint of romance, reluctant readers just might not make it through.

Book Description
Alexandra and Jenny have been best friends for a long time. But when Alexandra is momentarily dazzled by the glamour of a new girl at school, she's willing to do almost anything to get to be the cool girl's friend. Ultimately, she tells Jenny's biggest, most important secret--and just like that, Alexandra is in! But when Alexandra realizes what it feels like to lose her best friend, and sees the hurt she's caused, she knows she has to figure out a way to regain the relationship that's far more important to her than being invited to sit with the popular girls. Our Friendship Rules is both a lyrical story of forgiveness and a simple, sweet but instructive tale of how to get along.
Customer Reviews:
A straightforward story about learning to get along with and respect others.......2007-09-07
Written by former hate-violence prosecutor Peggy Moss and ninth grader Dee Dee Tardif, Our Friendship Rules is a children's picturebook about the true value of friendship. Two girls, Alexandra and Jenny, have been best friends for a long time. But when Alexandra is drawn by the allure of a new student, she'll do almost anything to become the cool girl's best friend - even tell Jenny's most private secret. Then she learns what it feels like to lose her best friend, and see the pain she's caused. Can a broken friendship be rebuilt? What are the rules that should govern a friendship? A straightforward story about learning to get along with and respect others, illustrated with distinctive collage-style paintings by Alissa Imre Geis.
Another Great Book by Peggy Moss.......2007-08-27
As a teacher educator, I've used Peggy Moss' book Say Something to begin important discussions about bullying, teasing and moving beyond being a bystander. Her new book, Our Frienship Rules, will be equally valuable in beginning critical converations about how children treat one another in schools. Using a book to begin this discussion is a fantastic way to initiate the exploration without making any particular individual student uncomfortable ... because we're talking about a book. But then, of course, personal stories flow forward, and soon we are all engaged in the challenging but vital work of making schools safe for all students. Highly recommended to all teachers, counselors and other youth workers as well as parents who want to talk to their own children about what matters
All Girls Know this Story to Be True.......2007-08-14
The beauty of this story is in the truth of the writing--the authors don't pull any punches, but they manage to create something along the way that is different--they show kids that even though friendship might be tested, there is almost always a way to make things right again.
Amazing Illustrations!.......2007-07-18
The perfect book for kids of all ages. Great way to begin a disscusion about what being a friend means, how to be a good friend and how to deal with hurt feelings. Perfect for home or the classroom . The illustrations bring the story to life.
True, true, true -- and beautiful too.......2007-06-12
Pitch-perfect, non-preachy, told in an authentic voice with a perfect economy of words, and so very very real, OUR FRIENDSHIP RULES is a seamless marriage of story and picture.
Our narrator, Alexandra, is a visual thinker and a budding artist, so it is perfectly fitting that more than half of this story is told via Imre Geis's crisp and joyful illustrations and crafty-girl collages (many of which allow the reader a peek into Alexandra's notebooks and sketchbooks).
As a career children's bookseller and mother of two, I would personally recommend this book to children from age 5 to 13, as well as to parents, teachers, librarians, and adult friends in need of re-writing their own 'friendship rules.'

Still fun to read after twenty years.......1999-04-15
I have five children ranging in age from 19 to two years of age. We were fortunate enough to obtain this book for our first child and have enjoyed reading it to each one since. It along with Babies by the same author is one of the best ways to teach very young children about every day emotions such as anger, happiness and love. The illustrations are charming and the stories delightful. I was sorry to learn that it is out of print but am happy to tell you that Babies is still available. After reading hundreds of childrens books these remain at the top of my list.
One Of My Childhood Favorites!.......1998-10-28
I loved this book when I was a little girl. It's a very cute story about 3 children, Mary, Larry, and Harry, who become best friends. The story explores their friendship and tells about all the things the children like to do together. The illustrations are beautiful and distinctive, and they remind me a bit of Japanese anime. I am sad to learn that this book is out of print; it a lovely story if you are able to find it.
