Book Description
When is the right time to shear a sheep? Is there a market for manure? What time of day is best to collect eggs? What is the correct way to milk a goat? What does a duck eat? Can a cow and a sheep share the same pasture? Which types of rabbits are easiest to raise?
The perfect book for anyone who has ever dreamed of having that little place in the country, Barnyard in Your Backyard offers tried-and-true, expert advice on raising healthy, happy, productive farm animals: chickens, geese, ducks, rabbits, goats, sheep, and dairy cows.
Each chapter focuses on a different animal, discussing the pros and cons of raising the animal, housing and land requirements, feeding guidelines, health concerns, and a schedule for routine care. Species that are easy to raise, hardy, and companionable are profiled. First-time farmers will discover simple, clear instructions for caring for animals throughout the year, as well as guidelines for processing barnyard products such as milk, wool, and eggs. Combining practical advice from real experts, easy-to-use checklists and charts, a seasonal care calendar, and detailed black-and-white illustrations, Barnyard in Your Backyard offers a comprehensive review of the ins and outs - the tribulations and triumphs - of living with and caring for a small barnyard.

Fantastic!.......2007-09-09
This book tells you everything you need to know for the novice to the experienced. Suggestions for those who want ornamental animals to the getting down to farming people. Pictures are great. Highly suggest this book!
great book!.......2007-08-10
This book works great and spells everything out very easily. Not the most comprehensive I am sure but I actually learned alot from it. I was mostly interested in chicken and sheep as well as ducks and geese. great book for a beginner like myself.
Excellent book, on various farm animals.......2007-08-08
This book is a wealth of knowledge! I own lots of books on raising ducks and chickens, and I have to say this book matches up well with all of my other books. Why is this impressive? Because the other books I'm comparing this book to are books that deal with only one type of animal (ducks, geese, chickens, exc). This book gives almost the same amount of detail as my other books plus it covers: Chickens, Ducks, Geese, Rabbits, Sheep, and Cattle. If your going to raise three or more different forms of live stock as a hobby, this is the only book you will need. If your going to try your hand at commercial production than you will need other books to supplement this book. I gave this 4 stars because the chicken and duck sections were not quite a thorough as some of my other books I own (though it came amazingly close). This is a no brainer purchase for anyone raising three or more of the animals listed above. A must buy...
Best farm book yet.......2007-07-19
Have read lots of books in trying to get spun up on hobby farm life, and this by far takes the cake as number one animal 101. It is well presented, covers all the facts and includes diagrams and discriptions. Will recommend to others as first resource to start with.
it is what the title says!.......2007-07-05
if you've just moved somewhere with a little land and are thinking of adding a few farm-type animals to your yard, this is a great book. It will tell you the demands that each of these little furry/fluffy/downy creatures will make on you, your property, and your bank account! The author gives a great overview of each of the animals mentioned in the title. BUT once you actually purchase the critters, you'll probably need a book that gives more in-depth information, especially in the health area. A great book to help you make educated decisions about what to toss in your ark!!

The crafty barnyard crew from Click, Clack, Moo: Cows That Type is back, and this time Farmer Brown has decided to take a vacation. But not to worry--he's leaving his brother Bob to mind the farm: "I wrote everything down for you. Just follow my instructions and everything will be fine. But keep an eye on Duck. He's trouble." Of course, fans of Doreen Cronin and Betsy Lewin's last brilliant book already know to keep an eye on that manipulative mallard. Now, wait a minute... what's Duck doing eyeing that pencil?
Poor Bob has no idea what he's in for, and Duck and friends have shrewdly seized this chance to move on from collective bargaining to outright subterfuge: "Bob gave Duck a good long stare and went inside. He read the first note: 'Tuesday night is pizza night (not the frozen kind!). The hens prefer anchovies.'" Well, seems like strange way to run a farm, but... "Twenty-nine minutes later there was hot pizza in the barn." Giggle, giggle, quack, indeed.
Clearly, Duck and his cow pals aren't the only ones around to have mastered the pencil and the keyboard. Cronin and Lewin have put their talents to good use yet again, offering up another simple but clever story fit for kids and grownups alike. Lewin seems to snicker throughout her playful watercolors (gotta love those monogrammed towels: "FB"), and Cronin has a ball with the animal cast and their human patsy. (What do the cows pick on movie night? "The Sound of Moosic," of course. Giggle, giggle, moo.) (Ages 4 to 8) --Paul Hughes
Book Description
Farmer Brown is going on vacation. He asks his brother, Bob, to take care of the animals. "But keep an eye on Duck. He's trouble."
Bob follows the instructions in Farmer Brown's notes exactly. He orders pizza with anchovies for the hens, bathes the pigs with bubble bath, and lets the cows choose a movie.
Is that giggling he hears?
Giggle, giggle,
quack, giggle, moo,
giggle, oink...
The duck, the cows, the hens, and the pigs are back in top form in this hilarious follow-up to the beloved Caldecott Honor Book Click, Clack, Moo: Cows That Type.
Customer Reviews:
Book.......2007-02-22
Do you like silly stories? Do you like when someone gets into mischief? If you do, then you should read Giggle, Giggle, Quack by Doreen Cronin.
There are many times Duck gets into mischief. Throughout the book, he writes fake notes. One of them gave the animals free pizza for there food. In this book, the pictures are very exciting. On page 4, the animals are eating pizza when Bob isn't looking. Also, the storyline is very funny and interesting. On page 6, Duck writes a fake note about how the pigs take baths in a bathtub.
In conclusion, this was a very silly story. The animals get into a lot of mischief. If you like these, you will like this story.
Could be better.......2007-02-14
My son LOVES "Click, Clack, Moo" so much that we have it memorized. I thought "Giggle, Giggle, Quack" would be a fun change of pace--not so. My son is only 2 1/2 so maybe he'll like it more in time. In Click, Clack, Moo there are phrases that are repeated and he picked up on those immediately. This isn't the case in Giggle, Giggle, Quack. It is a cute kids story, however, my son can't "help" me read it because there are no repeating phrases for him to remember, therefore it's not as interesting to him. We'll put this one on the shelf for a while and see what happens in another 6 months or so.
Funny, but not a good as Click Clack Moo.......2006-11-17
The book itself is good but you have to compare it to Click Clack Moo as the book dovetails on it. And to be honest it not as good a book. Still funny with the troublesome duck but (ok it sounds a bit strange to say) it's a bit less realistic. My son has not picked this book since the day it came home to be read. Click Clack has been picked several times since, so the truth is in the pudding, so to speak.
Watch that duck!.......2006-03-13
A great follow-up to "Click Clack Moo..." My two-year-old loves to see what Farmer Brown's brother Bob is doing for all the animals. Great for the imagination, beautiful water-color illustrations.
I have as fun as my son!.......2006-02-03
This is the kind of book that stick in your head. I been going around at work siting:"Farmer Brown has a problem, his cows like to type"
Or expressing "The barn is cold at night, we want electric blankets" in response to people asking for stuff.
The brilliant text in combination with wounderful pictures makes this book a great deal that will be read many times.
Overall I tink this is the best American written Childrens book around. Not to far behind my favorite "Bridget and the Gray Wolves"

When Duck gets the zany idea to ride a bike one day, each animal on the farm has a reaction. "M-o-o-o," says Cow. But what she's really thinking is, "A duck on a bike? That's the silliest thing I've ever seen!" Pig and Pig say "Oink," thinking all the while, "Duck is such a show-off!" But it's not until a crew of kids shows up and leaves their bikes lying about that the true feelings of all the animals come to light, and for one brief, glorious moment, the farm is a mad, mad world of two-wheeling road hogs (and chickens and horses and goats). David Shannon, the creator of Caldecott Honor Book, No, David!, fills the pages of this barnyard romp with sun-soaked color, charming animals, and unusual perspectives. We see Cat, for example, looming belly-first in the foreground, with Duck merrily pedaling away in the distance. The story itself is nothing to write home about--No, David! is far snappier and more original--but younger kids may well enjoy the repetitive crescendo and the goofy finale. (Ages 4 to 8) --Emilie Coulter
Book Description
One day down on the farm, Duck got a wild idea. "I bet I could ride a bike," he thought. He waddled over to where the boy parked his bike, climbed on and began to ride. At first he rode slowly and he wobbled a lot, but it was fun! Duck rode past Cow and waved to her. "Hello, Cow!" said Duck. "Moo," said Cow. But what she thought was, "A duck on a bike? That's the silliest thing I've ever seen!" And so Duck rides past sheep, horse, and all the other barnyard animals. Suddenly, a group of kids ride by on their bikes and run into the farmhouse, leaving the bikes outside. Now ALL the animals can ride bikes, just like Duck!

Just Ducky!.......2007-05-12
My four year old thinks it's hilarious to see Duck riding a bike and we both agree that the best page is at the end where the duck is pondering driving a tractor! We enjoy reading this together and he reads the animal parts while I narrate This is an enjoyable read aloud for kids and parents.
Mom.......2007-03-18
Great book. My 14month old wants this read every evening. The artwork is very nice and we are always discovering something new on the pages.
What E.R. Bird said - and a bit more.......2007-02-11
My daughter had to hide this book from her 15-month old twin boys because they insisted on many repeat readings at each sitting. (Same with Brown Bear, Brown Bear--recently hidden, then brought out, and she had to read it to them 11 times. When they come to the end they start to whimper so Mom has to start again! lol!!!)
The big wonderful illustrations of Duck really captivate the kids. I think we'll have to spring for a copy. We have them over every week.
Fun Read!.......2006-07-27
My two year old and four year old love this book! We checked it out of the library and were sad to have to return it. The story moves along in a very predictable way, yet has a great twist at the end. It gets read several times a week and has definitely become one of our family's new favorites!
I wish I could ride a bike just like duck!.......2006-03-06
For me, any book that can be acted, as much as read aloud, is a book that I want to share with my listeners and one that I would definitely recommend to you. This book is both those things. The ingenious text invites you to mimic the farm animals and be the most spirited reader you can be. In the hands of a dedicated reader and/or a devoted parent, this title will prove an exceedingly satisfying read. The illustrations are gorgeous and can be most appreciated in the arms of a child while he/she studies them up close. The clever ending will hopefully tempt your son or daughter to say, "Uh-oh, what's he up to now?" and foster a discussion with him/her about what might happen to Duck next. This is one of the best examples of contemporary literature for young children because it so artfully combines smart writing with outstanding illustrations. Again, like so many of the books I've presented to my audiences at the Children's Museum, this is a book that should be included in your young child's library because it will undoubtedly be read over and over and enjoyed till it's worn.

Great illustrations increase participation of listeners!.......2007-05-29
I lead storytime programs for our local library and do outreach to area nursery schools. I just read this book last week and have nothing but raves for it. Not only is the story successful, the illustrations draw the listener in and provide ample opportunity for comments and laughs. The author also uses the days to sequence the action, which was good reinforcement for learning the days. On Monday..., "what day comes next after Monday?"..., etc. The final page, as someone already mentioned, shows an illustration of pigs, leading readers/listeners to predict what will happen next. Be prepared for the almost immediate "Pigs to the rescue!".
An A+ book, it has become one of my faves.

Customer Reviews:
Solid duck care book.......2007-07-24
This book would be very helpful to they inexperienced duck owner. However, I can't see it taking anyone beyond the basics, and if you own ducks at some point you will have to travel down that road. This book does give a lot of good information. It has everything from basic anatomy of the duck, to diet, housing and environmental concerns, duck behavior, raising ducks, a list on ornamental and domestic breeds, and most importantly it gives you the basics in an easy to understand format.
Having said all this this book has some weaknesses. It does not have a detailed breeds list (only a couple pages). This book does cover a lot of information in under a hundred pages, but it doesn't cover any one thing really well. I prefer Dave Holderreads book "Storey's Guide To Raising Ducks." I feel it is a superior book for both novices and experienced poultry personal. So why did I give this book 4 stars? Simply, this book does everything it can in under a hundred pages, it just doesn't do enough in my opinion. It would be a good book to start with, but you will eventually have to buy or get more information somewhere else.
Duck Handbook.......2005-08-12
Owning a pet duck is a lot different than owning a dog or cat!
This book will help you know how to house, feed and care for that cute little Easter duckling that quickly turns into a big white bundle of feathers.
If you like to feed ducks at the pond, BUY THIS BOOK!!!!.......2001-08-13
I love to go feed the ducks at the local pond. I now know what types come to the pond and why they act the way they do. This book is interesting enough for an adult, but easy enough for a child to understand. This is a WONDERFUL book. Very FUN to read.
The New Duck Handbook.......2000-03-20
This book was very helpful. It answered all my questions. It is also a very good investment because you will always have questions and it always has answers!

Book Description
"By book’s end, young readers will flap for joy right along with the endearing web-footed heroes." - PUBLISHERS WEEKLY (starred review)
Farmer Duck isn’t your average duck. This duck cooks and cleans, tends the fields, and cares for the other animals on the farm - all because the owner of the farm is too lazy to do these things himself. But when Farmer Duck finally collapses from exhaustion, the farmyard animals come to the rescue with a simple but heroic plan. Martin Waddell’s uplifting modern fable, imbued with Helen Oxenbury’s trademark humor, is truly a read-aloud classic.
Customer Reviews:
For cryin' out loud, folks. It's just a STORY........2007-08-15
Fourteen years ago, as I read this simple, entertaining, and richly illustrated tale to my children, I'd have never imagined the literary and political controversy that has flared among Amazon reviewers.
*Farmer Duck* is just as inclined politically towards the Protestant Work Ethic as it is towards Socialism. The lesson in this short and simple tale is that lazy and unproductive people will eventually get their come-uppance. Personally, I find it has more of a `French Revolution' flavor but without the guillotine and the violence.
As I read their comments, I find some reviewers are reading a different book than I.
The farmer is portrayed as a lazy and unproductive human because he IS a lazy and unproductive human. He calls from his bed and chair "How goes the work?" rather than put his pants on and go outside like a proper supervisor to view the work in progress.
The animals chase the lazy farmer out of the farmhouse. They don't lay a feather on him. He doesn't resist to defend his 'rightful ownership'. He just runs away.
On the literary analysis level, let's keep things in context. The microcosm presented here is 'Farmer Duck', not *Animal Farm*. Plagiarism? Come on. Comparing the *Farmer Duck* 'philosophy' to *Animal Farm*'s is like comparing a pair of garden shears to a corn harvesting combine.
What makes *Farmer Duck* such a good tool is it's the kind of story that you as a parent can talk with your kids about. Ask them what they felt about the relationships between the farmer, duck, and the animals. Ask them how each character's behavior affected them. Having a dialogue with your children about a not-so-black-and-white subject might open doors of opportunity for you as a parent and allow you to share with them what YOU think about it.
Or you can just read it to/with your kids, have fun, and enjoy this excellentstory by Martin Waddell and imaginative pictures by Helen Oxenbury.
Animal Farm.......2007-05-13
All these people who wrote good reviews are insane, or shamelessly politically biased.
This book is Animal Farm, if you are a employee of Immi Truth from 1984. They are rewriting history people, and marketing a socialist ideal to our childeren.
George Orwell must be rolling around in his grave.
This an example of the worst kind of brain washing. VERY 1984, to try and indoctrinate the childeren into the INGSOC mentality.
Great book for reading readiness..........2006-06-11
This book lets you teach 44 vowel-spellings with 213 vocabulary words.
Bad lesson for kids.......2005-12-24
Animals use violence to force a farmer out of his house and run him off his own land. There is a good reason why this is on the list of recommend children's reading at the website for the US Socialist party. Violence toward land owners is no lesson for kids to learn. Very disappointing.
My son loves it!.......2005-12-04
I borrowed this from the local library to read to my son and it soon became his favourite book. I love it! I especially like the picture of Farmer Duck rounding up the hens - he looks crazy and it makes me laugh! It's funny to imagine a duck doing all that farm work! You feel empathy and sympathy for the duck. It's a great book that kids can memorise too. Go, Farmer Duck, go!! Although, I did find it rather interesting that the duck was giving the orders to the animals at the end of the book. You'd think he'd be grateful that they got rid of the lazy farmer, and instead he's bossing them around! He, he, he.

Raising Small Livestock.......1998-08-14
The ideal handbook for those looking for information in a simple format that is complete in detail and content. It is apparent the author has written from first-hand experience on everything from birds to turkeys. Don't hesitate, buy it........2005-11-29
This is one of the best books I ever read to my kids. And they usually picked it first for bedtime reading. It is written in rhyme and the illustrations are absolutely wonderful.
FANTASTIC!.......2004-12-09
This is a great rhythmical story that supports early readers because of it predictablitly of the story. The antics are fun and exciting. Also, the illustrations are absolutly FABULOUS and is what kept me interested as a child and still today as a new teacher.
all time favorite.......2000-05-03
This book is one of my all time favorites. I started reading to my children when they were babies - it has great rythm. It is delightful for adults, and my children have always been riveted. My one year old twins stop whatever they are doing to listen to the story whenever I start reading it. (I even "read" it to them in the car or bath because it is an easy little poem to memorize!)
Reading made easy...and FUN!.......2000-03-29
Written in rhyme, this book makes it easy for young readers to experience the thrill of reading all by themselves. Of course, the goose's antics only add to the excitement. This is a great book to motivate your preschooler to want to learn to read.
