Well,.......2004-05-30
as another reviewer noted, you get what you pay for. You can certainly use this book; the info is sound. However, it's also somewhat basic, and most of it is available online. The range maps were cool, the photos were good, and even the info was OK. It's just all out on the web, for free. The book doesn't exactly go into great depth as to the natural habits and habitats of the animals (not really it's point), and is restricted to being a "pet store" type of book. It is what it is, and it's OK for it, but you can get better, more in depth info, for a little more, and pretty much the same info for free. It'll tell you how to keep your critter alive, and maybe breed it, but not much more.
It's allright, but nothing special.......2004-01-24
I bought this book the day I got my Pueblan milk snake. It's interesting, but nothing special. You can get all of this information (plus some) off the internet for free. The only reason I gave as many stars as I did is because it had a lot of color pictures, there was one section in the back that proves useful. My snake was having some trouble shedding, and they had some helpful advice for when this happened. I live in a little hillbilly town in Oregon, and we don't have any exotic vets nearby, so without that info, my little Beetlejuice may have lost an eye, or worse.
All in all, it's worth a read. You get what you pay for ^_^
buy it for the photos and the rest is lagniappe.......2001-01-07
the photos are the best of any of the "kingsnake" books, the maps are useful, and the care etc. sections are adequate.
The best kingsnake guide for beginners.......1997-11-22
I have been involved in keeping and breeding kingsnakes for years and this is by far the best book available in its price range. Packed full of photos and current husbandry techniques, I highly recommend it to both novice and experienced hobbyists. The photographs alone are worth the price of the book--a must read for any kingsnake or milksnake enthusiast!
The book is useful, interesting , and well priced........1997-08-25
This is an excellent book. We just got a Kingsnake and used the book to classify it; we found it informative for feeding and other care procedures. The book was well priced, had good photographs and the text was interesting, giving useful information about the hybrid Florida Intergrade Kingsnake (our pet) and how large it will get.

Doo doo.......2006-12-27
This book is DOO DOO! I bought it hoping it would tell me how to take care of my newly purchased chameleon and maybe tips on breeding. All it talks about is how they live in the wilderness. LIKE I CARE?!?!
my thoughts.......2001-10-15
i think that it covered too many species in such a small book it wasnt detailed enough on each species.it would be much better if it had more categories for sections of particular species e.g. feeding your veiled chameleon etc
The word here is "BROAD"........2001-03-23
To start, this book seemed to be filled with a lot of information at first. Then after a while, I realized that it contained nothing useful to me, because I was looking for very detailed and specific information on Vieled Chameleons and this book only had a broad overview on the physical characteristics, and the care section was 5 pages long. Not a bad book for a overview. Not a good book for details.
Simply amazing.......1999-11-21
Nov 20, 1999 - You cannot go wrong with AVS books. The authors are pioneers in reptiles' and amphibians' husbandry. This book (like any AVS books) is user friendly and contains a lot of practical tips. It's simply the best book about chameleon breeding in the market today.

Only second best.......2000-01-03
to the world of Phelsuma is this book. Though generally very helpful and nice, some of the info (especially latin names) is not up to date, some species are missing (Phelsuma Pronki, Phelsuma Masohoala etc.) due to their recent discovery. If you are able of reading german, I can only advise you to get a copy of the amazing book:
Faszinierende Taggeckos - Gattung Phelsuma Authors: Hallmann/Krueger/Trautmann
This is the bible of Phelsuma friends.

Contains 80 pages on individual species accounts which include total length, distribution, typical habitat, brief description, management, and captive breeding.
Even though new species have been discovered since this book was printed, it is the most complete reference in print on Phelsuma day geckos. This book has over 90 pictures, diagrams, and maps.
Customer Reviews:
Briefly overviews the care spectrum of geckos........1999-03-04
This book tries to give an overview of the care and breeding of geckos, falling short of an inclusive "how to" book. It's coverage of classification and biology are good. These areas are often overlooked by many hobbiest. Faithful to its commercial publisher, it promotes various retail products available at pet stores. Many beautiful "foto glaze" pictures of geckos. Some of these pictures are of geckos rarely seen in any general gecko books.
Book Description
Boas are a diverse group of both New and Old World snakes. Adult specimens of certain sand boa species attain a maximum size of only two to three feet, while the green anaconda may exceed 30 feet in length. For decades, humans have maintained boas in captivity. Recreating a suitable environment in which various boa species can thrive and even reproduce has always been a challenge for the herpetoculturist. Captive Husbandry and Propagation of the Boa Constrictors and Related Boas contains detailed information specific to boa species and subspecies. All major captive care considerations are addressed allowing boa keepers to provide for, and possibly breed their captives. Comprehensive chapters on heating devices and their application to herpetoculture, and designing a herp room will be extremely beneficial for everyone maintaining any species of reptiles, as well as the boa keeper

Captive Husbandry & Propagation of Boa Constrictors.......2004-08-05
This is the perfect book for all ranges and levels of Boa owners from a single animal owner all the way to a professional breeder. This book is scaled more to the professional but, I highly recommend this book be in every library. Extremely informative. A milestone in boid husbandry information........1998-12-07
This is an excellent volume for anyone wanting information on keeping or breeding boas. The superb chapters on designing a herp room, and heating devices will benefit anyone keeping reptiles of anykind ,not just boas. I thought the photos were especially good, including some of boas I've never seen.
good book.......1997-08-21
This is a great book if you are looking for information on breeding boas.It gives strategies and proven methods for a few different boids. The info is great. The reason I did not give this book a 10 is because I think they could have added more pictures for the price

For someone that doesnt know much about Geckos, this book was an awesome introduction to the speices and their general care and well being. At the time of purchasing my gecko i couldnt identify the species but was educated about its rarity once reading this fully demonstrated book with lots of pics and info about my newest pet. Highly recommended for those beginners wanting to know more.

One of the best........2003-02-06
One of the best Cham books out there for beginners. Chameleon husbandry Information is hard to find in book form. I as one of the above reviewers stated also have all the cham books on husbandry on amazon[.com], and this one is the best. I recommend finding a breeder and talking to them, that is the only way to get the most up to date info on chameleon care.
The Definitive Book on Chameleon Husbandry.......2001-12-08
If you are a new chameleon hobbiest owner or are about to take that plunge into chameleon ownership, this is the ONLY book you will need.
It covers feeding, caging, care specific to many different and exotic species, and basic medical information as well. The book is well written and covers topics thoroughly. The pictures are superb and the author's personal experience keeping chameleons and other herps is very reassuring and lends to her credibility. I wish I had got this book first, if I had, I would have never bought the deVosjoli or Bartlett books. I spent way more than twice the cost of Davison's book buying 5 or 6 other books about chameleons--all of which have outdated, incorrect and/or incomplete information.
I WAS LOOKING FOR THE QUINESSENTIAL BOOK, WRITTEN FOR THE HOBBIEST, ON THE HUSBANDRY (aka CARE) OF CHAMELEONS.....I OWN EVERY ONE OF THE BOOKS CURRENTLY AVAILABLE ON AMAZON.COM IF YOU DO A SEARCH FOR "CHAMELEON" OR "CHAMELEONS" BUT, I PROMISE YOU, NONE COMPARE TO LINDA DAVISON'S BOOK! SHE HAS GIVEN US A BOOK THAT IS AS CLOSE AS YOU CAN GET TO FINDING THE PROVERBIAL DEFINITIVE BOOK.
P.S. If you are a chameleon owner and you do NOT have this book, no kidding, you do NOT know what you are missing!
top notch book.......2001-09-18
this is the book to get. what more can be said. seems pricey but it is worth every penny.
Best Information you could buy!.......2001-07-13
I have purchased five books on chameleons in preparation for buying one as a pet. I found that several of the books contained conflicting information or not enough. This book was full of accurate and helpful information. I confirmed this with a local breeder! I have refered to this book quite a bit. Buy this book first!
The Only Book You'll Need.......2001-02-01
I have all the chameleon books currently available and this is the one I always go to for information. I have bred my Veiled Chameleons and have treated quite a few health problems using the information found in this book. This should be the first book you buy when you are thinking of owning these wonderful animals.

Customer Reviews:
Very Informative book.......2001-08-03
If you have any questions about any type of turtle or tortoise this book will answer them. Very informative. Worth the money.
Outstanding reference source for turtle keepers everywhere.......2000-12-14
I own many turtle books, but this one is truly outstanding and is in my "most used" category..... a cornucopia of practical information that is well-written, well-presented and well-researched. There is stuff here that you'd have to combe through an entire library to find otherwise. I commend this text to all keepers, from beginner to professional. It has been called the "bible of turtle keeping" for good reason - there is no better single volume source of accurate information available. The author is founder of the Tortoise Trust, one of the world's leading turtle conservation and education organizations, and is known for numerous contributions to our knowledge on this topic. Without doubt, this is the most useful, practical turtle book I own, and I urge other keepers not to pass it by! There are some awful books on turtles out there, and they can get your animal's killed... this one is quite the opposite, and it has certainly saved many of my own animals. Excellent.
Practical Encyclopedia of Keeping and Breeding Tortoises and.......2000-09-01
If you own a turtle or tortoise, buy this book and keep it handy. The Practical Encyclopedia of Keeping and Breeding Tortoises and Freshwater Turtles has information for everyone; yes, even for advanced keepers. This is not just another reptile book with lots of photos and little substance. It is a pet owner's manual that appeals to a wide audience. Beginners to turtlekeeping will find all they need to know (without being intimidated) about nutrition, housing, medicine and maintenance of all of the common (and some not-so-common) pet species. Highfield presents a great deal of information in a logical, readable manner. The book includes many color photographs which are helpful in species identification. The chapters on nutrition and medical care are outstanding. Many of the species presented in the book have photos to go along with the detailed descriptions of their habits, habitats and life-cycles. The Practical Encyclopedia of Keeping and Breeding Tortoises and Freshwater Turtles is loaded with information that is pertinent, concise and accurate. I highly recommend this book.
