This handsome volume features approximately 450 color photos and illustrations.
Customer Reviews:
What a waste of money.......2007-07-23
Don't purchase this book unless you are a botanist. It is very difficult to understand and the layout impossible to follow.
Good book but some questions remain unanswer........2007-06-30
This is a beautiful book with many high quality pictures of the plants. Overall it has well organized content but some informations are just not specific enough. For example, how much CO2 to dose to your tank is appropriate? How much Gh is a water soft or hard? How much time it normally takes to "cycle" a tank? No introduction on the pros and cons of different CO2 reactors types. Some answers may not be trivial but at least general guide line should be provided to be any useful.
A great all round book for aquatic plants.......2007-06-02
This is a very good all round book for aquatic plants from the substrata , to light requirments etc etc. This book even give basic gardening requirments and arranging to have a healthy and attractice garden in your aquarium .
A great plant book.......2007-01-28
This is an excellent book, simple as that. It has information on not only plants, but many other important aspects of aquarium care. It has extensive information on how plants work in the natural habitat, in the aquarium, and how to care for them.
Everything is simple and concise and explained well, the images are great and show exactly what they should. How to trim different plants, how to plant them, how to get rid of algae and making a balance of nutrients in the aquarium and so on. Just examples of what it covers, if you have an aquarium and have plants and just want to know what to do to keep your plants healthy, just get this book.
Great introduction to aquatic plant care.......2006-08-03
If you are new to planted tanks, then this is a great book to have. It discusses all of the relevent topics ranging from tank setup to pruning and proprogating to nutrients and equipment. The first half of the book is a guide to all of the aspects of caring for aquatic plants. There are a few places where a little more thorough discussion would have been valuble, but for most cases the book does a good job covering the topics. The second half of the book lists many of the plants that you can keep emersed or submerged in an aquarium. There are very nice pictures to go along with the descriptions, making it a useful reference for most plants you will find in your LFS.
In short, I'd say this book would be a nice addition to any planted tank enthusiasts library.

Great book for the koi keeper.......2007-05-26
This is one of the best books that I have found on Koi. Beautiful color
photographs abound in this informative book. If you have to have only one book on Koi-this is the one. Lot of good advice on building a pond, what to do if there are problems such as illness, identifying fish pathogens and their treatment, different kinds of koi. I especially like the pictures of other people's ponds and landscaping-full of good ideas.
Good book-- but BE CAREFUL!.......2003-06-21
I lost half of my Koi in the space of 6 hours, because I was counting on this book, and it does not even mention the catastrophic disaster known as PH Crash. Unless you find out about that, and take preventative measures, this WILL happen to you!!
This book fails to describe water chemistry in sufficient detail, and these days it's pretty outdated. However, it does have a fantastic photo catalogue of koi varieties, and a decent overview of health problems, pond construction, and seasonal care. If you have fish, make sure to get multiple books in case one is missing important information.
This is the book.......2002-02-07
I have kept koi and bred them for around 5 years now. And when I pick up a koi book this always seems to be the first one I go to. As far as I'm concerned, if I had only one koi book this would be the one. If you're about to get into koi don't do it without the Tetra Encyclopedia of Koi.
All books should have such a high standard - kudos to tetra.......2000-09-20
Amazing. The only problem I had with this book is getting it out of my wife's hands. It covers EVERYTHING. Sections on Filtration, Pond design, Feeding (listing alternative foods that Koi enjoy), Anatomy (first rate), Selecting & showing your koi, a detail listing on the different patterns and scale formation and probably the best ( in my opinion) Parasites and Diseases, what they are, were they come from and how to destroy them.
This could be and should be renamed to "The koi instruction manual". If you are a koi breeders, I highly recommend this book, after reading it, I would wager that it would be THE book to recommend to your customers. The reason being that they would have less problems and get better enjoyment out of their hobby. It truly would be hard to go wrong with this book.
Wonderful & Enjoyable.......2000-01-26
This book is as easy to read as any grade school book and as indepth as books which I have read that cost 5 times as much. I have enjoyed reading it so much that the day after I was done reading it, I started reading it again. I own a nursery for watergardening plants, fish and supplies, and I highly recommend it.

THE BEST BOOK REFERENCE.......2006-08-14
I HAVE WANTED THIS BOOK SINCE IT WAS PUBLISHED, AND WHEN I COULD
GET IT FROM YOU, I TOOK IT IMMEDIATELY. I FIND IT TO BE THE BEST
OF REFERENCE BOOKS AROUND TO DATE. THANK YOU.
Truly exceptional book.......2006-07-27
I enjoyed the book immensly. I read it in one day cover to cover all 900+ pages. Very informative and great pictures of fish. I have been a hobbyist for 20 years and I still learned something from it.
A space filler book .......2006-06-23
The author doesn't even include the temperature to keep the fish.
Disappointing.......2006-03-12
I wanted one great dictionary for reference as I just got started with my aquarium a few months ago. I found this to be badly indexed, and since it is alphabetical by Latin subspecies and then Latin name within it, they assume a great deal of knowledge right off the bat. Then you need to look up the common name in the index to find the latin name and my most common fish aren't even in there under common name (ie., Molly, Platy). Guppy is under "D" in the index, a typo for "G" - which makes me think this wasn't even proofread. I really didn't need information on freshwater fish like bass and pike, since those aren't aquarium fish, so don't understand who the audience is supposed to be. Many fish in here measure over a foot in length. I have an aquarium, I'm not going fishing.
A Very Good Reference but not Perfect.......2006-03-04
Unlike many previous Tropical Fish books from the Tropical Fish Hobbyist publisher that were not much more that an unorganized child's picture book, this Encyclopedia is well oganized and has a great common name and scientific name index. A desciption of the fish is on the left page with two corresponding pictures on the right page which makes for easy reading. I would rate this book 5 stars if the descriptions were more detailed. It leaves out temperature range, PH range, sexing information, etc. even though there is sufficient room in the description area for about 40% more verbiage. I recommend this book to be used in conjunction with the 4 Volume set of the Baensch Aquarium Atlas which provides much greater detail of each fish species.

Customer Reviews:
perfect beginner book.......2006-09-06
this book is more than a paperback of color plant profiles, it touches on all the basics of fresh water chemistry, plant keeping, layout and maintenance, using short paragraphs and nicely illustrated pages. it lost a star for not elaborating more on the wide variety of fish, shrimp and snails that are often used to keep a planted aquarium clean.
Excellent book for amateur and wannabe expert.......2006-01-22
This book is a great buy for the price. It has the most recent information (2005 edition), is nicely organized and formatted, and the illustrations and descriptors are very good. The sections on individual plants is very helpful with most popular plant types illustrated and described. I especially like the fact that the decriptions, while brief, are very to the point and provide essential information in a clear concise way (plant height, light and other requirements, overall ease of maintenance, growth rate, suggested placement in tank etc). Not as comprehensive in listing species as some other books, but more than enough for most avid aquarists (I have had aquaria and live plants for over 25 years!). If you buy only one book, make it this one!

Customer Reviews:
Nice reference.......2007-01-10
When I bought this book I had already been in the sw hobby for six years, but for some reason I had to have this book. Needs to be updated, but it offers a great and broad foundation of the hobby. It is easy to read, and has awesome pictures. Also some of the species names were different from what I have seen in most other books. ???
Great Book for Doctors Lobby.......2006-12-16
This is a wonderful book for the lay person to read as they wait to see their doctor. The pictures are lovely. I gave it as a gift to my favorite dermatologist who happens to have a saltwater aquarium on display.
Good Reference Book.......2006-11-03
We've used this book mostly for identification of fish that we didn't recognize at the pet store. The pictures are fantastic and it covers a broad scope of information on setting up the tank, reefs, fish and invertebrates. It gives information on what they eat, who they get along with, and what conditions they prefer. In some cases, however, the directions for caring for a certain type of fish were not as detailed as we would have liked. If you want a general saltwater reference book, this is a great investment. If you're looking for specific, detailed instructions on how to care for different things in your tank, another book might be a good supplement to this one.
Environmental awareness approach for new hobbyists.......2006-03-13
Full of excellent information about the marine bio-sphere. Most of the information is presented in such a way that environmental awareness is passed to the reader, which will be good food-for-thought for any new hobbyists. Crisp & clear photographs are backed by descriptions of marine life, which give a clear understanding of the subjects chosen.
Comprehensive and informative........2006-03-09
This book is a good reference book for fetermining what fish you might want to get down the road. I wouldn't recommend it for your initial tank startup as there are better books for that, but for fish ID and compatibility, it is nice. There are lots of wonderful pictures and overall good information.

Great Photos - But Somewhat Lacking Otherwise.......2001-08-16
With the exception of the first 21 pages, this 127 page book is devoted to some 200 photos of popular fishes. Photos are excellent as are symbol keys related to aquarium requirements. Also has a 4 page listing of common aquarium plants and their needs and suitability. However, with a total of only 8 pages devoted to aquarium set-up, this book is insufficient for the beginner putting together his first aquarium....Overall, a good book to have if you are purchasing it for the photos and related key symbols.
Great basic, easy to read, very well structured book...........1999-08-27
This book has a very comprehensive aquarium setup, filter and maintenance guide. After this section comes info and colored pictures of different kinds of fish, including it's adaptability, breeding info, temperament and the care it requires. All is indexed at the end of the book....The only down side to this book is that if you're interested in only ONE kind of fish, it won't make you an expert....All in all, this is a great book for what it was designed to do: help you decide what fish you want to buy.
Great basic reference book!.......1999-06-18
I enjoyed the fact that every fish is presented in full color. This makes it easier to identify the fishes. Though the most common are listed, these are good ones to start with, and I found this book to be an informative read!
Good, especially the photos. Basic, could be more detailed........1999-04-04
A good book for beginners looking for something to start with. It has good care and basic breeding information of freshwater and a few brackish fish. Photos are excellent.
outstanding, great for both beginner and expert.......1999-02-18
David Alderton's International Encyclopedea of Tropical Fish is an outstanding edition to anyones home library. Not only is it informative on tropical fish alone, it covers everything you would need to know as a beginer and expert in this fascinating hobby. As a collector of chiclids I was excited to learn that they to made a grand appearance in ths wonderful hardcover. Sincerely, John J. Browne

Customer Reviews:
Neither complete nor encyclopedic, but still a nice work..........2006-06-09
I was really hesitant to give this book only three stars, because it actually is very well-written and quite nicely illustrated. My main objection to the book is its scope, reflected in its slightly misleading title. In a well-intentioned effort to write a comprehensive one-volume reference, the author glosses over too many principles which a beginner should learn in detail, and skims over (or omits) some essential information on advanced topics.
As a broad overview of home aquarium science, the book is great; as a reference for either the beginning or the advanced aquarist, it will likely prove to be of limited practical use. Someone who is just starting out would do far better to purchase one or two of the many good beginner's books offered on this site. (If you're reading this, it means that you're checking the readers' reviews, which is probably the best way to find the most suitable books for your needs.)
Good, has needed info on rarer species, with updated names.......2003-01-14
I found information on fish that I could not find in other basic bread and butter books. While it does not have pictures of the more common species, those can be found in less expensive books. This is a book for the more advanced hobbyist, yet can be a great help for anyone with it's broad coverage. If you want a book covering basic species, go somewhere else. If you have been finding some of the rarer fishes in your pet shop that most books do not cover, then you will find this book helpfull. I do wish it covered more of the Corydoras, and included pictures for all the fish it describes however. All and all, it is nice to see current latin names used, and advice on keeping the rarer fish that seem to be showing up in greater numbers these days.
Complete Encyclopedia of the Freshwater Aquarium.......2002-11-12
I found this book disappointing. Photographs of some of the more common species that are available at local stores were not shown. If there was a photograph of a species somewhere in the book the description segment did not give a reference page for the photograph. Knowing what rare fish look like is nice but not helpful for most novice collectors. In most pet stores these exotic fish are not available.

Approximately 250 color photos and illustrations in each volume.
Customer Reviews:
Good book, but has a lot of recycled material........2006-11-18
This is a good, somewhat comprehensive book with nice pictures. However, don't buy it if you already have Koi: Living Jewels of the Orient. A lot of the text is the same, word for word, as are a lot of the pictures.
