Book Description

Fancy Nancy is back! And when her family decides to get a dog, she's certain she can be fancier than ever. After all, a papillon—a small, delicate, fluffy dog—is the ultimate accessory. But her family wants a large, plain dog. How unglamorous!

With Fancy Nancy's trademark humor and warmth, Nancy discovers that real fanciness does not depend simply on appearance but more on a genuine joie de vivre, which is a fancy phrase for having lots of fun.

5 out of 5 stars A must for any little girl!.......2007-10-02

I got my daughter her first Fancy Nancy book when she turned 2, and now everything that is girly she calls fancy Nancy, shoes, purses and anything sparkley! Great to read for bedtime too. I can't wait for the next books to come out!

I think Amazon should list this if this is the case

5 out of 5 stars A very "posh" book!.......2007-09-26

I purchased Fancy Nancy and the Posh Puppy to go along with the original Fancy Nancy book for my 5 year old granddaughter . . . I had them sent directly to her house while I knew I would be visiting so we could open them together and start reading. My granddaughter loved them and I had to read them several times during our first sitting! The story is very cute and age-appropriate, and the illustrations and colors are perfect for little girls her age. I wish these books had been out when my girls were little! I love the word "posh" because I was born in the country where it's most popularly used.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Dr Pitcairns natural health.......2007-10-05

This is absolutely a must book. Giving dogs prescribed medications often involves side affects which shorten their lives. Being able to find out about natural products that can help them is great. It can not only lenghten their lives, but also cost less in the long run. I highly reccomend this book to all dog owners.

4 out of 5 stars great resource.......2007-10-01

this is a great resource book. It has lots of background info on dog foods and so much info on great supplements. It could be made easier with breakdowns or charts to guide you for quicker reference, because I find myself having to flip back and forth a lot. There is definitely lots of info and it has to be read more than once. I think the recipes are sound and easy to make. Although I can't cook for my dogs all the time, at least I can do it whenever they are ill or recovering from some ailment or surgery to ensure that their bodies are strong when they need to heal. This book makes it manageable to do that.

4 out of 5 stars A great resource.......2007-09-23

This book is a great resource for pet owners. I find the health-care section of the book very useful. I have modified the recipes to accomodate the inherited allery issues my dog has. Modifying the recipes is a very involved process as the substituion of products recommended and appropriate amounts required for balanced nutrition can be a hassle to figure out, especially, if one's pet was allergic to multiple products.

This is a great book for pet owners who want to try homemade cooking and alternative medicine for their pets.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent overall but diet not suited for all .......2007-09-01

There is more than one way to feed a healthy, non-commercial diet. I recommend buying both Dr. Pitcairn's book and Andi Brown's book, The Whole Piet Diet, to see which diet your animal(s) prefer. I have three pets, two 13-yr. old cats and one 1 1/2-yr old terrier. The cats had been eating holistic Blue Buffalo dry food along with some canned Friskies. The terrier was eating holistic Blue Buffalo dry food along with some raw meat, veggies, yogurt, etc. I recently learned that dry food is difficult for pets to digest and is terribly drying and causes digestive problems like vomiting, dandruff, etc. The Friskies is just plain junk food so I decided that I was going to feed healthier fare and bought both books (Dr. Pitcairn wrote the foreword in Andi's book). While Dr. Pitcairn promotes primarily raw meats with cooked whole grains, Andi Brown promotes cooked stews (grains included for dogs only, not cats). After experimentation, I found that my dog and one cat prefer Dr. Pitcairn's recipes and my second cat prefers Spot's Stew (from Andi's book). When I made the switch, I only started feeding the recipes without supplements to the cats. It took 15 days for them to eat consistently, then I started adding the supplements in small amounts and gradually built up to the daily recommended amounts. Tip: my cats preferred Andi's supplements over Dr. Pitcairn's (especially the essential fatty acids in the form of oils). All of my pets are doing very well on the diets but only because I was persistent in finding what worked best for each pet. I will never feed dry food again!

1 out of 5 stars It's a shame..........2007-08-29

...that an obviously experienced and well researched vetrinarian would recommend a diet that includes grain as one of the staples of the diet. Anyone who does even a minor amount of research about the special diet needs of a dog would easily find that dogs do not possess the proper enzymes to break down grain properly and can lead to either minor or serious allergic reactions. Dogs should not eat any type of grain at any time. Anyone who reads this book, do not take it as gospel. Please do more in-depth research before you make any solid decisions on your dogs diet.

Besides that fault, there are only a few recipies included in this rather long book. I heard very good things about this book before I bought it and was thoroughly disappointed after I read it. Its hard to give this book anything else but a negative review.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful healing tool for dog lovers who have lost their pet........2007-10-06

This book offers peace as well as humor to those attempting to deal with the loss of their beloved dog. The illustrations are priceless, and the dialogue reminds us that dogs do, after all, go to heaven. I have bought numerous copies for friends in need, and they have all been so grateful!

4 out of 5 stars Dogs enjoy Heaven.......2007-09-24

When my two young friends, boys aged 6 and 10 lost their lifetime friend, Charlie-the beagle, to illnes, I purchased several books to help them formulate their own feelings and perhaps talk about their loss.
This book stimulated the most conversation. The idea of 'Charlie' going to a special, dog-friendly, place in Heaven brought a few smiles as they read. This was a good 'read together' book for those under 7 years of age.

4 out of 5 stars To help a bereaved dog owner.......2007-08-09

I first saw this book mentioned in the AKC magazine as an appropriate title for a bereaved dog owner. I am sure that, for an owner who had lossed a loved canine, this book would be a simple affirmation of the dog's importance. The book would also call up memories of precious times.

3 out of 5 stars Dog Heaven.......2007-07-16

It was sweet, but I had expected and hoped for more. We just lost a dog after over 11 1/2 years and were looking for a book to really help the children cope. It was just alright.

5 out of 5 stars This book should be in every vet's waiting room.......2007-06-25

Found this book in the veterinary ER waiting room the night we took in our 16 year old dog, and had to put her down. My 8 year old son couldn't stay in the exam room while they did the procedure, but found this book and read it out loud to me while it was happening, and then went into the room afterwards and read it to his dad and 2 sisters. I was so impressed I bought us a copy for my pastor-husband's office, and then 2 more copies for family members who responded to my email about losing our dog and my son reading this book to the family. I cannot say how much this helped our family.

Author Wilson Rawls spent his boyhood much like the character of this book, Billy Colman, roaming the Ozarks of northeastern Oklahoma with his bluetick hound. A straightforward, shoot-from-the-hip storyteller with a searingly honest voice, Rawls is well-loved for this powerful 1961 classic and the award-winning novel Summer of the Monkeys. In Where the Red Fern Grows, Billy and his precious coonhound pups romp relentlessly through the Ozarks, trying to "tree" the elusive raccoon. In time, the inseparable trio wins the coveted gold cup in the annual coon-hunt contest, captures the wily ghost coon, and bravely fights with a mountain lion. When the victory over the mountain lion turns to tragedy, Billy grieves, but learns the beautiful old Native American legend of the sacred red fern that grows over the graves of his dogs. This unforgettable classic belongs on every child's bookshelf. (Ages 9 and up)

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Exciting ending, boring beginning.......2007-10-04

I found the beginning of this book to be quite boring. It felt like the same thing happened in practically every chapter up to about page one hundred. He would hunt, get in danger, and get out of it. Same thing every time. After that, however, it got better. More things happened like him getting in the competition, and the tragic ending. Overall it was a decent book.

1 out of 5 stars Most heartbreaking ending ever........2007-08-16

This book was great until the end. I read it as a kid in the 5th grade and enjoyed the story and the journey of the kid earning money for the dogs and his bond with them.

But, the ending is horrible. You will cry, you will be angry, and you will feel betrayed by this book forever. My husband and I still can't beleive how depressing the end is.

If you must read this stop before the last couple of chapters. Then imagine the dogs living a happy long life by the fireplace.

5 out of 5 stars Where the Red Fern Grows.......2007-08-06

This book is great for anyone who has ever lost a dear pet. This novel explores the adventures of a boy and his dogs; dogs which he remembers well into adulthood. The story is a real tear-jerker.

5 out of 5 stars Where The Red Fern Grows.......2007-07-09

Everyone who has ever had a faithful dog should read Billy's story at least once in his or her lifetime. It's an ageless tale that touches the heart and mind.

Ten-year old Billy lived in the Ozark Mountains with his parents and three younger sisters. The family was extremely poor, as were most of their neighbors at that time, and could only afford the bare necessities of life. Billy's dream of having a pair of coonhounds of his own seemed to be only that until he found a resourceful way to earn the money for himself.

For two long years, Billy trapped and sold animal pelts until he had finally saved enough money to finance his lifelong dream. With his grandfather's help, he ordered two pups and then walked several miles to bring them home. That's when the real adventures began.

If the story is beginning to sound familiar, it should. "Where the Red Fern Grows" by Wilson Rawls is an unforgettable classic that has been enjoyed for generations.

So where does the red fern come into the story? You'll just have to read it for yourself, and don't be surprised if you hear the distant bawling of a couple of dogs who have tree'd a `coon each time you open the book.

It's just Little Ann and Old Dan, for they've never really left these Ozark hills.

5 out of 5 stars Bought it for my son after reading it myself in my younger days........2007-06-08

Maybe only country boys can appreciate it, but I thought it was a simple, yet great story, timeless.

We hold this truth to be self-evident: farting makes kids laugh. Walter, an apologetic-looking dog adopted from the pound, passes gas morning, noon, and night, no matter what he eats, whether it's a 25-pound bag of low-fart dog biscuits, cat food, or fried chicken. On the bright side, "If Uncle Irv let one slip, he just went and stood near Walter." When Father reaches the limit of his patience with Walter's flatulence, he decides the pooch is once again pound-bound, despite Betty and Billy's pleading. Poor Walter knows his days are numbered and "He resolved to hold in his farts forever." That very night, two burglars break into Walter's family's house, and (you can see where this is going) Walter gasses the burglars with a "hideous cloud" that forces them to drop their loot and run into the clutches of the police officers, "choking and gasping for air." The next morning Father and Mother discover Walter has saved the day--or at least their silverware and VCR. "And so the family learned to live with Walter, the hero dog. And that is the end of our tail." (Or is it? Fans will be pleased to discover the next book Walter the Farting Dog: Trouble at the Yard Sale.) Audrey Colman's highly stylized illustrations, imbued with a surreal, Monty Pythonesque collage look, are as absurdly comical as this silly story that is purely powered by natural gas. (Ages 5 to 8) --Karin Snelson

Book Description

Warning: This book may cause flatulence. Walter is a fine dog, except for one small problem: he has gas. He can't help it; it's just the way he is. Fortunately, the kids Billy and Betty love him regardless, but Father says he's got to go! Poor Walter, he's going to the dog pound tomorrow. And then, in the night, burglars strike. Walter has his chance to be a hero. Destined to become a children's classic, this story will have kids rolling on the floor with laughter. Adults are permitted to laugh too.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Six year old loves Walter.......2007-10-08

I bought this as a gift for my best friend's six year old boy. He absolutely loves all of the Walter books.

4 out of 5 stars OMG they're not terrified?.......2007-09-26

Many people seem to be concerned that reading this book will encourage potty humor and make kids afraid of intruders. I have to say, this book is a favorite at our house and I have yet to see an increase in the fart jokes or have any of my kids fearful of burglars. Hmmmm..... I wonder if the same people have reviewed books such as, lets see, Hansel and Gretel and worried that their children may suddenly become frightened of candy and ovens.

All snarkiness aside, this is a hilarious children's book. I found the illustrations to be quite nice--different from the traditional watercolor or pencil drawings. I love when an illustrator uses a new style. This book will stay in our family's favorite reading pile.

5 out of 5 stars Great book. Kids 6, 4 & 2 enjoy!.......2007-09-26

We got this book, as well as Walter the Farting Dog Goes on a Cruise. My kids request this book every night, and over and over. We're pretty animated when reading, but besides that, this is a funny book. Who doesn't want to laugh at a fart? I think this also takes some of the 'kick' out of the WORD fart, since it's used in the book, and it takes some of the 'taboo' or naughtyness out of using it, so my kids use the word less these days, thank god....what's the fun, anymore, right? :) I definitely recommend this book. It's nice when I can have fun reading a book series, as well as my kids enjoying it, and in this forum they can finally SAY the word without me giving them the 'mom' look. Ok, well, I still give them the look....but this time I get to laugh.

5 out of 5 stars Shreiks of laughter!.......2007-09-17

I gave this book as a gift to my friend's son. To say that he was happy and excited doesn't even begin to describe it. After opening tons of Matchbox cars, action heroes, etc., he at last came to Walter The Farting Dog and abandoned all toys for this book! Everyone had to take turns reading to him, and he spent quite some time quietly reading to himself.

I give this book high praise, indeed, because it encouraged a love of reading!

5 out of 5 stars Poor Walter.......2007-08-23

we have a dog a bit like Walter. So we understand. This teaches children that sometimes it's OK to fart.

Book Description

"Living With Blind Dogs," now in its second edition, is the only published resource book on this topic. It embodies helpful hints from hundreds of blind-dog owners, as well as years of ophthalmic nursing, veterinary, and dog training experiences. Both the veterinary community and dog owners alike continue to praise this text, in which Levin successfully answers the common question: "What do I do now?"

This revised edition contains all the topics covered in the first edition, such as: Dealing with feelings of loss and grief, how dogs react to blindness, conditions that cause blindness and how they progress, genetics, pack issues, training concepts, new skills, helpful hints to negotiate the house, yard, and community, toys, games, and suppliers/resources.

This revised edition also includes numerous new sections and chapters: Dogs both blind and deaf, dogs blind from birth, white canes and other devices, circling behaviors, changes in barking patterns, dealing with cats, giving eye drops, traveling and camping with a blind dog, adding another dog to the pack, dry eye syndrome, VKH, and new findings on PRA and SARD.

4 out of 5 stars Book for handling blind dogs.......2007-10-10

This book is very helpful for me in training my blind Pekingese. I've gotten several good ideas from it.

5 out of 5 stars Most practical, encouraging help available to owners of blind dogs.......2007-07-21

My sweet Basset Hound Wilma developed glaucoma causing immediate blindness in one eye with the possibility of blindness in the other eye at some point. This book is full of encouragment that blind dogs can lead happy lives and really "normal" lives. It has pages and pages of practical things to do to help your dog. It is also a great resource for someone like me with a dog partially blind or beginning to lose their vision because there is a very helpful information on preparing your dog for blindness. I had felt so sad and hopeless about my dog's future until I got this book. A MUST HAVE BOOK for anyone dealing with their dog and blindness.

4 out of 5 stars Very helpful..........2007-05-14

I am the owner of a 6 yr old rottweiler who has been diabetic since 2005 and has recently developed cataracts due to her illness. This book has been extremely informative to me as I assist my dog to adjusting to life without sight. It helped me to understand that with a little patience and guidance, my dog can still enjoy a quality life. Since this is probably a one-of-a-kind book, it is an invaluable source for owners of blind dogs. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Very helpul & informative.......2007-04-04

I had been approached about adopting a blind puppy. I purchased this book to figure out if I would be up for the task of dealing with a blind puppy. I found this book to be very helpful & informative. I did adopt the puppy & I was able to have the house ready for her to negotiate & map out by following the book's suggestions.

5 out of 5 stars Excellant resource!!!!!.......2007-03-18

3 out of 5 stars Nice Combo.......2007-09-26

This combo is a nice resource. Some subject are very informative, other lacking. It's not the super book that some reviews might lead you to believe, but an adequate general resource to raising a puppy at a nice price. Video is a complement to the book. Be sure to also get a book specific to your puppies breed.

3 out of 5 stars Not what I Was Looking For.......2007-09-18

In the domesticated animal world I have noticed that animals I want/need to train don't speak English. They speak who'sthebiggest. They use biting and kicking (horse, ouch)to communicate. I was looking for a book that would help me communicate to a very wily puppy that our family is ahead of him in the pecking order. This book was not suitable for us, as it did not cleary establish that the dog is a dog. This training method may work better for someone with a less willful breed. We found excellent results with training classes at our local Petsmart.

5 out of 5 stars Very Helpful!.......2007-09-16

This book did wonders for my understanding of dogs' "thought process". i wish I read this book years ago. If I had, my dogs would have always been trained and well behaved. Everyone is surprised at how well behaved my 7 month old puppy is. This is a must!

3 out of 5 stars Not to bad.......2007-08-23

I really like to DVD included, It was much more easier to visualise it
after to read it from the book

5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2007-08-08

This is one of the better puppy books currently out. It gives not only background information on dog types and their tendencies..but a easy and fun way to train them and what works for certian peronality types. It tells why doing or not doing certian things effect the puppy's learning to be a good dog.

Open the front cover and the first two pages you see contain the Index of Signs and Symptoms, from Abdomen (painful, swollen, distended, and tucked up) to Weight loss, Wheezing, and Whining (continual). There's a comprehensive index in back, of course, running the gamut from Abortion to Zinc-Responsive Dermatosis, which is all very useful, but when your pooch is in pain, it's great to be able to turn, with the minimum of folderol, to the page that says to relax, it's nothing a bit of extra grooming won't fix, or alternatively to hightail it over to the vet hospital. It's a wonderful reference for any dog owner, with chapters on emergencies (such as burns, dehydration, and poisoning), as well as worms, infectious diseases, skin care, and canine eyes, ears, and nose. There are chapters on the digestive, respiratory, and circulatory systems, the nervous, musculoskeletal, and urinary systems, plus dog sex, whelping, puppy pediatrics, geriatrics, and chapters on cancers and medications. In short, it covers every health dimension a dog owner might want to know more about, identifies the possible causes, helps you determine the severity of the condition, and indicates what treatments or actions to take to best insure your dog's good health. --Stephanie Gold

4 out of 5 stars Saved My Dog's Life.......2007-08-21

When it comes to human coughing, we know it will get better if we're otherwise normal. I learned from this book that when a dog coughs, it is always bad. Always. I took my dog to the vet in the nick of time. The day after he was given heavy doses of antibiotics and other meds, he nearly died from not being able to breathe because of the congestion in his chest. He is a 12yo Akita so his recovery has been slow, but he is definitely improving. I have to thank the authors and publishers of this book as they made it easy to find my dog's symptoms, (symptoms are listed on the inside cover - no digging necessary) and then to determine that my dog should see the vet immediately. The only reason this book scores a 4 instead of a 5 is because my dog's nose was terribly stuffed up and I couldn't find anything relating to that in there. The caveat to this is that I only bought the book a week ago and have not had a chance to read it all. It could be in there somewhere. :o) Big book. Small price. Well worth it.

4 out of 5 stars excellent resource.......2007-07-31

This is an excellent resource. It is technical but in an easy to read format. Unfortunately, the pictures are few and in black and white.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource.......2007-07-24

I've had my copy of this book for 10 years now and have referred to it many times. It helps me to articulate my concerns to our vet when necessary and to calm my nerves when one of my pets presents with some symptom or ailment. My vet has commented on it herself as a great resource. I'm ordering the one for horse owners as I've recently acquired my first horse and hope to be equally happy. It is better than any web site or other dogs for dummies kind of book. The best features are the Index of Signs and Symptoms, the common household medications and the fact that it doesn't just resort to the "consult your veterinarian for more information" for everything beyond fleas.

5 out of 5 stars Good home reference book.......2007-07-16

I have referred to this book several times when trying to figure out what's wrong with my dog. It is user friendly and comprehensive. If it saves you a trip to the vet, then it is worth the 20 bucks already.

4 out of 5 stars This book has already paid for itself!.......2007-05-30

This is hands down, the best book out there for dog care. For those hwo say it's not good for emergency situations, it's not ment that. That is when you should stop worrying about money, put down the book, and get your dog to the vet. My dog was suffering from liver disease and when he started to act a little strange and confused I looked it up and discovered he had "Hepatic Encephalopathy (HE)." I was able to call my vet and describe his symptoms and explain that I thought he was HE and the vet gave us a prescription without having to bring him in. That right there was enough to pay for the book. It is written in a way that everyone can understand and is easy to follow. I only gave it four stars because it was missing some things that I was looking for, such as syncope and more in depth with kidney disease.

5 out of 5 stars soooooo funny and fun!.......2007-09-10

I have two other skippyjon jones books, and this one doesn't disappoint! My daughter just turned 3 a month ago, and she absolutely loves these books! Sure she doesn't get the humor the way we adults do, but she finds it just as funny and enjoyable in her own way nonetheless. We sometimes read these every day, if not every other, and find that we miss them if we don't. The illustrations are just as good as the writing too! I highly recommend these, you will laugh your head off every time!

5 out of 5 stars Silly, Fun, and Cute.......2007-08-26

Great book to read out loud to your kids or in the classroom.
"My ears are too beeg for my head"
"My head ees too beeg for my body"
"I am not a Siamese cat.....
I AM A CHIHUAHUA"
Just a little taste of the books silliness.

5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2007-07-01

My [....] and I have so much fun reading the Skippyjon books. Mummy Trouble is our third. We also have the original Skippyjon Jones and Skippyjon Jones In the Dog House. The CD is a bonus - sometimes my son likes to pop in the CD and listen to the author read the story while he follows along in the book.

5 out of 5 stars We love Skippyjon Jones!.......2007-06-10

Absolutely love this series! Kids cheered when they saw we had a new book and ask that we read them more often than most others. My three year old runs around saying "mummies, mumples and measles" as fast as he can. Hope Ms. Schachner writes many more.

2 out of 5 stars Not as good as her first two Skippy's.......2007-05-12

I loved the first two Skippy books, as did my 6 and 3 yr olds. But, this one talks about mummies and pyramids of which they are not yet knowledgable. I hope her next book goes back to a story the little ones can love once again. This one is not requested reading, like the first two.
