Not really a guide.......2007-05-17
I have to say that I was very disappointed with this book. I was hoping for more information to be contained within the book but this is more like a book that you would give an elementary school child. The book gives only superficial information about the breed. I think that people can find more information on most online sites,i.e. Wikidpedia, etc.
I Bought It. I Read It. I Recommend It........2007-04-13
I thought I'd say that as the owner of a sixteen-month-old female black lab I learned a lot of useful information from this book. It doesn't waste time, and always comes straight to the point: something I tried to do with this review.
Great Summary Treatment On Owning A Labrador!.......2006-03-21
As a person who has had the distinct pleasure of sharing my house and my life with as many as six Labrador retrievers at a time over the last 20 years (I now have five), I am acutely aware of the wonder and awe associated with getting such a wonderful companion can be. yet, sadly, I am also aware of the profound ignorance many would-be labrador-people are regarding how to select, introduce, and socialize this new member of the family. In that sense, this book , along with a number of others such as Richard Wolper's "Family Dog", can provide the wary would-be initate with all of the essentails on how to successfully transform that cute little puppy into a happy, obedient, and well-integrated member of the household.
This book does offer one the expert advice one needs regarding the care and nurture of what has now become the single most popular breed in the United States, with information ranging from an impromptu history of Labrador Retrievers to such topics such as adoption options. The book also features a wealth of facts and details regarding Labrador Retrievers. It provides essential and vital information regarding nutrition, socialization, and exercise, and offers some sage advice about how to find and select a reputable breeder. In addition, it also touches on aspects of ownerships such as common illnesses and chronic problems associated with the breed. This is a book I can heartily recommend!
The Guide to Owning a Labrador Retriever.......2000-06-25
This book provides the basics on Labrador Retrievers. If you are new to the breed this is a very helpful book. It does provide enough information to get you started with a new puppy and a new breed. If you are looking for very detailed instructions on training and retrieving this book really doesn't go into enough detail.
Guide to Owning a Labrador Retriever.......2000-02-23
This book was informative on the basics, but did not go into a lot of depth on any one topic. I bought it because I was researching the breed, but I feel I need to buy additional material in order to answer my questions, since I plan on being a new parent to a pup.

The Guide To Owning A Great Dane.......2006-02-04
The book had some really great glossy pictures. I did not think the book was very informative it sort of touched on different subjects but nothing in depth it was VERY basic. It did not help me on my decision on whether or not to add a Great Dane to my family. I am considering getting a Great Dane and this book was not helpful at all except to show me some very nice pictures of some gorgeous dogs and puppies. It was a nice read but not very helpful or informative.
Guide to owning a Great Dane.......2003-08-21
Great! An informative and interesting read for the average prerson who is looking into the breed. The high gloss pages and many photos in the book were beautiful. It is a high quality book for the price. I would recomend this book to anyone interested in the great dane.
This is a very good book for someone thinking about buying a Dane or for the first time Dane owner........1998-07-18
This book was quite informative and easy to read. It would be particularly beneficial to someone thinking about purchasing a Dane. It gives a lot of information without being difficult to read or going into more detail than is necessary for a novice Dane owner.

I Loved it!.......2003-02-09
I bought this book at a Pit Bull wieght pulling show a few years ago & I loved it!! It was very well written, indepth & informative! I would recomend this book to anyone who is interested in learning the truth about the American Pit Bull Terrier, it is also a great referance book, I still find myself looking through it once in awhile. :)
The Pit Bull.......2000-06-22

The Guide to Owning A Pomeranian.......2001-10-12
Excellant book for the first time or well seasoned pomeranian
owner. Lots of tips and information in layman terms. Being
a pomeranian breeder I intend to recommend this book to everyone
as a must have.
Highlights Many Different Topics & Concerns Regarding Poms.......2000-08-21
Many pet books that are currently on the market are full of fluff and sound like they could be about any breed of dog. However, Ms. Ellmann has written a wonderful guide to Pomeranians. She highlights on the history of Poms, the proper way to choose a pup, housebreaking, training, grooming, and general health care of Poms. She also gives great information about how to show your dog if you desire to do so. It's not a guide that goes very in-depth, but in my case, it's a great book to get started learning about Pomeranians. One of my favorite features of this particular book are the stunning pictures that are throughout it. I definitely recommend this Guide To Owning a Pomeranian!

Overly focused on showing/competitions.......2004-02-09
This book is great if you're looking to figure out whether your shih tzu is showable and can participate in competitions. Other than that, there are far more helpful books out there in terms of puppy care, how to work with and train a shih tzu, etc. I didn't learn anything from this book since I don't intend to show my dog. There isn't anything else in this book that is unique or particularly well done. If you do want to show your furry friend... this might be for you
A Good Place to Start.......2000-06-12
"The Guide to Owning a Shih Tzu" is a good book for initial information regarding the Shih Tzu. It gives brief information on the Shih Tzu's history, standard, grooming, feeding, training and health. The pictures are charming... as are most Shih Tzu. This is a good place to start if you are looking for a book to introduce you to this breed.
Very lightweight vis-a vis the title.......1999-01-21
Apart from the history which was interesting, the contents covered the other topics in a very cursory fashion. The book was long on emotion as to "how marvellous your wonderful new puppy is" but gave little practical information on what a new owner wants to know as far as puppy care is concerned(first night at home, house training etc) which were glossed over in a couple of sentences. Far more space (and lavish photos) taken on showing the dog and flossying it up - a lot of owners just want an everyday pet, not a prima donna.

Great info on the history of the Chiuaua breed........1999-09-16
This book gives a good history of the breed, standards, and general info specific to the Chiuaua's care. It has tons of cute pictures, as well. Just be sure to purchase an additional book on puppy care and training, as these sections were not complete in this book.

Series.......2005-03-25
These books are GREAT! I had a Maltese and this book helped me raise him until he died. They tell you every thing you need to know. So buy this inexpensive book.
Horrible advise on how to care for your new puppy...........2004-03-23
This book is filled with useless information. The advise on how to care for your new puppy is horrible. The author tells you to put your new puppy on the floor and not to handle the puppy unless it's absolutely necessary. The author also advises you to leave your puppy in the kitchen and let him cry all night if that's what it takes. Is this how a new puppy taken from its litter mates and dam should be handled on its first night in your home? I don't spoil my dogs, but they do receive lots of TLC. Don't waste your money on this book.
Good introductory, but..........1999-03-15
This is a great book if you're looking into different breeds: It's inexpensive, and is a good introductory to the breed. But if you are bringing a Maltese home in a week, you need to get a more complete book that covers the aspects of training, grooming, and puppy care more than this book.
Not complete in its areas listed.......1998-02-20
If you are looking for a overview of the Maltese, this book will work. But if you are needing breeding, grooming, etc. questions answered, look for another more complete Maltese book.
Customer Reviews:
DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK!.......2003-07-24
Do not waste your money. There is very little useful information. For instance, the cover lists information on training. The chapter on training tells you that you can train at home, join a class or send your dog off! There is no information on training at all.
Very basic.......2003-02-11
Wonderful pictures! I was hoping for more information on selecting a puppy and pro & cons on using the internet to find a breeder. Mainly a basic "puppy care" book. A 10 minute read with some useful information.
BEAUTIFUL PICTURES.......1999-06-28
IF YOU WANT TO LOOK AT PICTURES WITH LITTLE USEFUL INFO THIS IS YOURE BOOK . MORE LIKE A PITCH BOOK FOR THE BREED .

Great for the Beginning Owner.......1998-12-11
This book is an excellent reference for the first time German Shepherd owner. It does not address major things like breeding or police force training, but then, for less then $10, what do you expect? I bought this right before purchasing my first GSD two years ago, and to this day I refer to it again and again. Mr. Orban did a wonderful job of writing in everyday language and making things very simple for the first time GSD owner.

Find another book.......2000-07-21
Don't get me wrong... this book has some useful information. But it's nothing you can't find elsewhere, about dogs in general or boxers in particular. You're paying for glossy pictures and a very slim volume.
The little useful information that you'll find here is, alas, written in a cloying, cutesy and often ungrammatical style that really drew on my reserves to get through it. I don't normally review books, and rarely give bad reviews, but in this case, I wish I hadn't bought the book.
Excellent source for first-time boxer owners........1999-02-07
Patti Rutledge has created an excellent one stop source for first time boxer owners. "Guide to Owning a Boxer" is very well written and contains many wonderful color pictures. This book is a must reference for anyone who loves the Boxer breed.
