I Loved it!.......2003-02-09
I bought this book at a Pit Bull wieght pulling show a few years ago & I loved it!! It was very well written, indepth & informative! I would recomend this book to anyone who is interested in learning the truth about the American Pit Bull Terrier, it is also a great referance book, I still find myself looking through it once in awhile. :)

Great Book.......2007-08-16
Great book. This book is perfect for someone thinking about buying a APBT. Even a great book for someone who owns one. Good buy.
Disapointed.......2007-06-08
When I bought this book I was looking for various training techniques that have been sucessful for pit bulls. I figured a book called "How to train your american pit bull terrier" would be a perfect match for what I was looking for. The only thing I did find was a thin reference geared towards pit bulls with a tiny section reserved for training. Most of the training information consited of how to find a good trainer, not specific techniques. This book is very basic and vague and I was quite disapointed.
Hmm.......2006-08-09
Unfortunately, this book wasn't what I expected it to be. I have a puppy that's rambunctious, loud, stubborn and playful... I needed help learning training techniques that would help me keep me under a little more control.
What I got from this book was a lot of common sense put down in book form.
Sure, if your first dog EVER is a pitbull, this book might be helpful. However, as a person who's owned and been around dogs all of her life, the techniques and proceedures in this book are so basic as to be absurd when included in this book.
There were perhaps one or two points in the whole of the text that taught me anything, and then they weren't anything to do with obedience training.
Telling the reader to take his/her dog to obedience class was not what I was looking for in a book.
In short, the book is lacking.
It might be useful to a novice, but not to an experienced dog owner.
Waste of money.......2004-01-29
This book describes only puppies who are "fearful" - afraid of a leash, afraid of your absence, etc. etc. Most of the pit bull puppies I know are rambunctious and self-assured. There are no helpful tips for training those puppies.
Also, the author says that if you have a full time job, you shouldn't adopt a pit bull. Most of the dogs in local shelters are put to death, and pit bulls, as well as pit bull mixed, are quite common in this state. If you have a fenced yard and will spend time, effort, and money to lovingly raise a dog, then I say go ahead & adopt one. They have barrels of energy, but are very loving animals and deserve a chance.
Excellent book.......2001-11-06
Well, i have a bull terrier, but i didn't find a book like this to raise and train my dog, however this book had been a great purchase because these breeds are very similar in their behaviors.
so if you have a pitbull or bully, just buy it.

A great book for the Beginner.......1998-05-29
This book, i felt is the best book for the person thinking of getting an APBT it outlines proper care and grooming of these dogs and the fulfillment that can be achieved by taking proper care of your wonderful pets, my only problem was that it didnt outline the temperaments that some of these dogs posess and dangers associated with a dangerous untrained animal. Jacqueline O' Neil did an otherwise excellent job.

A very good book.......2000-10-24
For someone who wants to get an American Pit Bull Terrier should read this book. It talks about responsible ownership and how to socialize your puppy so that it will become a good canine citizen. Although it has a whole chapter about dog-fighting which I don't like, it uses that information to explain the temperament of the breed - which is not a vicious animal like everyone says. Ofcourse pit bulls are dog-aggressive, although some live with other dogs their whole life without any incidents. They love people and strangers and are not guard dogs - in fact they love people so much that they will let a stranger in your house, take everything including the pit bull. Some pit bull owners even get other dogs like Dobermans to protect their pit bull. It might sound strange but its true. Bad breeding, dog-fighters, gangsters, and the media gave this breed a bad reputation. Before you buy a dog - read this book first. Pit bulls are only for very few people - only if you you are getting this dog as a pet, have lots of time to spend timewith them, socialize them, and have time to love them then may be you should consider this breed. Be a responsible owner!
great info on a breed hated by many.......2000-07-03
for someone who knows nothing or little about the breed this is a very informative book and even greater for someone who refers to the breed as a blood thristy killer who lives to fight.if it can change my fathers view on an american pit bull terrier it can change anyones!
Should be required reading for all owners/potential owners!.......1998-12-09
This short, inexpensive book realistically depicts the unique challenges and responsibilities of owning this special breed. If everyone followed his advice, we wouldn't have the negative press we do today. If I bred APBTs, I would give one to everyone who purchased a puppy from me.
Mr. Fenstermacher's book exorcises the dreaded APBT demons!.......1997-01-28
Finally, Finally! Here is a book written in an easy down-to earth style which covers the raising of one of America's most controversial breeds of dog. Mr Fenstermacher's knowledge of this breed obviously comes from hands on experience, as he has been breeding and raising these dogs for some time. He playfully writes of his own pets and gives brilliant examples of often overlooked training methods and their desired results. In this day and age of the dreaded "Pit Bull Danger" it is gratifying to read of these fine animals as loyal and intelligent pets

Very Usefull.......2007-10-06
The book is excellent and provides a usefull information for raise and American Pitbull Terrier
Easy read for those who want to know more about the breed........2007-01-11
This book was helpful when I first got my APT a few years back. Besides teaching you the basics of taking care of him/her, it also goes into how the breed has been abused and misinterpreted. American Pitbull Terriers can be the most loyal and friendliest of dogs, if taken care of properly. (I can attest to that, being a former owner).
Wonderful, informaitive, Truthful.......2003-11-20
This book gives a truthful picture of APBT's. It also has exclent information on caring for this breed through it's life. I purchased it for my mother, who was nervous about the breed, before I adopted my dog. After reading the book she was looking forward to having the adition to the family come and was sharing her new found info with friends and family who had negitive reactions when hearing I was getting an APBT. An exclent book to have on hand and share with those intrested in the breed, who own the breed, and who don't know the breed.
Don't judge this wonderful breed of dog!.......2003-03-23
Even though I knew that this dog wasn't as "mean and aggressive" as people made it seem, this book was extremely interesting and i learned many new facts. Besides being a great care-guide, it explains the breed's character and history.Everything that you would ever want to know about the American Pit Bull Terrier can be found in this book, accuratly portrayed. The book is clear on how to prevent accidental fights and that this great dog should only be owned by responsible people. Hopefully the APBT will one day gain the respect they deserve and people will know the truth about them.
A wonderful book for APBT owners and fans!.......2001-04-25
As an owner of a 90+ pound APBT, I have tried to read all the books and articles I could find on the subject of pit bulls. This is BY FAR the best book I have found. Many writers of such books are extremely one sided, either portaying the dogs a vicious killers or as baby dolls. Mr. Stahlkuppe very fairly shows the good points of these dogs, as well as the bad. This book should be required reading for all prospective pit bull owners.
Book Description
Known for it's bite-inhibition, the Pit Bull can out pull a dog twice its weight and is a lovable and loyal family pet. Uncover the exploitation of these breeds which has been done all in the name of sport.

BRAVO !!!!!.......2006-12-22
My hat goes off to Dawn Capp for her dedication to helping this breed and for writing this book. This book is perfect for handing out to your neighbors (who think "pit bull" equals "vicious man killer" due to years of being bombarded by the bias media propaganda and misinformation) when you bring home your new Bulldog pup or rescue dog. It is informative and to the point so it is a quick read that holds your interest. It really hits home on how persecuted these poor animals are, and paints a true picture of how wonderful these dogs really are. This is a must have for any breed advocate or new Pit Bull owner to help pave the way to a more favorable public image of our breed.
Great Book!.......2005-01-29
This book dispells many of the myths about these wonderful animals. Highly recommended.
Great Book with a lot of information.......2004-10-18
Very comprehensive, and it has a nice chapter on hero pit bulls. Good photos. The cover photo is very nice!
Book Description
Congratulations! You own or are about to own one of the most distinguished breeds of the twentieth century, the American Pit Bull Terrier. Your dog is automatically feared and respected by other people, and it's up to you to be his caretaker and ambassador.
This book will help you do both-and more. In the caretaking department, The Ultimate American Pit Bull Terrier will tell you everything you need to know about feeding your dog from puppyhood to old age. It will explain grooming essentials, like trimming toenails, cleaning ears, checking teeth, brushing and bathing. It will describe basic health concerns, from vaccination schedules to flea control to what to do in an emergency.
As for being an ambassador for your breed, The Ultimate American Pit Bull Terrier will tell you all sorts of fun facts about the Pit Bull's history so you can boast about your dog and help people understand him for who he really is. Did you know The Little Rascals' devoted companion, Petey, was a Pit Bull? Or that the Pit Bull was the symbol of American strength and courage during World War I? It's true; the Pit Bull was once the all-American dog, a companion cherished for his excellent way with children, his playfulness and his doggy demeanor. In most homes, he still is. But it's also true that today Pit Bulls are associated more with crime than with companionship.
The Ultimate American Pit Bull Terrier celebrates the breed for the kind of dog it is with the right owners. A dog with physical and mental stature whose intelligence, charm and energy make him a superb friend, fellow athlete and playmate.

Should be required reading.......2006-05-17
Unlike some reviews I have read. I am not going to criticize this author for what I think she doesn't know or what I think she should have wrote, or how she should have done this or that, or said this or that. To these people I say, when you write a book on the subject and have it published then you can run your mouth.
This book is a must read. People need to know where these dogs come from and what they where bred to do. To fully understand this gladiator among dogs. I believe that to truly have a healthy respect and admiration for this breed you need to read a book like this and others like it, that go more into depth of the history, and such. This book is for light reading, in my opinion a brief introduction into the breed. As well as being filled with advice on training this breed, heath and nutritional needs of dogs in general. I recommend it for people who want to bring a Pit into their life and their home. As with every dog you should research before you get an animal of and type. These are not dogs for everyone. If you can't be a strong leader in the eyes of a lesser dog. Do not bother with a Pit.
This book gives a good idea of what you will be dealing with. Simply put. A very strong, Terrier, which means he'd rather train you. After reading this book I looked at my bully much different and saw him in a new light. Never have I been afraid of him, but never have I had more admiration and respect for him. These dogs are not like the standard poodle next door that retrieved fowl from the water. Their job was to fight for their lives. One which they have excelled at. Every thing about them reflects this. They posses qualities no other dog can touch. No wonder they were chosen as mascot for the U.S. Marines.
I know we can't all agree about whether or not detailed material on "blood sports" bull, bear baiting, and dog fighting should be included in books. Though the presence of this topic does not make the writer Pro- dog fighting. But the fact is, that is what these animals where bred for, it WAS there sole purpose. Dog fighting today is, YES, cruel and inhumane. It NO longer has its place in society. But it hasn't always been that way. It states in this book that in the 1500's Queen Elizabeth herself entertained guests at her court with bull and bear baiting. This is also something many people out there need to come to terms with. In order to have a firm grip on the nature, the personality, and the characteristics of this breed. I feel that this is all information that should be read. By people who are blessed with a bully and those who seek to be blessed, even people who think this breed is a monster. They all need to read these books. Simply by reading this material you can understand what is not an acceptable behavior for this breed. For example...Pit Bulls should not be people aggressive. If the breeders of fighting dogs wouldn't have one on their property that would show aggression toward a person, then why is that what people now expect from these animals. Simple. Stupid people are in possession of dogs with poor, unstable temperaments not necessarily with the intention of ever entering a dogfight are breeding them with dogs of the same quality. Thus producing dogs that shouldn't have been born in the first place. Crating these so-called media monsters.
In conclusion this book brings a wealth of knowledge to the table of anyone willing to be enlightened on this famed, feared and dreadfully misunderstood canine survivor. I urge everyone to read books like this before you bring a Pit into your life. I also hope that instead of supporting the get rich breeders from our local newspapers, who are hurting this breed, consider rescuing one of these wonderful animals. For every 600 Pit Bulls in shelters every day only 1 will find a home. Please help heal the wounds humanity has inflicted on these canine saints.
Ultimate APBT Book!.......2005-08-27
Forget the B/W pictures! This is the real ultimate APBT book! if you have any questions about owning a pitbull, this book can answer them all. It also has brief history of pitbulls, not much but if you want a deep history, it won't be fit in just a chapter.
A very useful book, you will open it again... and again... and again!
A Warning About This Book.......2004-01-02
Do not, I repeat, do not purchase this book if you already own "An Owners Guide to a Happy Healthy Pet: The American Pit Bull Terrier" or "The Essntial Pit Bull" because you will find that you are only purchasing another edition (with a little bit more information added) of a book you already own. I opened up this book once in Barnes and Noble and was quite supprised to find that I was really reading another book I had sitting at home on my bookshelf!!
However, if you do not own the two books I mentioned go ahead and buy this book. While it is not the best book written on Pit Bulls it is worth a read if you are not too interested in really diving into a deep understanding of the breed. This book is geared toward the pet owner who is more interested in learning how to take care of their dog.
If you really want to bite into an education on American Pit Bull Terriers then read these books: "The Working Pit Bull" by Diane Jessup, "The Truth About The American Pit Bull Terrier" by Richard F. Straton, "The World of the American Pit Bull Terrier" by Richard F. Stratton, "The Book of the American Pit Bull Terrier" by Richard F. Stratton, "This is the American Pit Bull Terrier" by Richard F. Stratton, "Colby's Book of the American Pit Bull Terrier" by Louis B. Colby and Diane Jessup, "The American Pit Bull Terrier Handbook" by Joe Stahlkuppe, "Gladiator Dogs" by Dr. Carl Semencic, and "Fighting Dog Breeds" by Dr. Dieter Fleig
Very Good, Useful and Easy Reading.......2002-02-27
I was doing research about pit bull books and I came up with this one. I found it very useful. Very good info about the origins of the breed, tips on obedience training...and good photos. It has worked a lot for me since I'am a recently pit bull owner. This book was just what I was looking for. I recommend it.
Good, well balanced book.......2001-04-30
The book does a pretty good job describing the temperment of the breed w/o portraying the dog as an angel, which many of the other books I've seen seem to do. Has some breed-specific training advice as well, not just basic training for someone who's never owned a dog before.

You May Be Dissapointed.......2002-12-22
If you have the book 'The American Pit Bull Terrier' by Jacqueline O'Neil you will be very dissapointed with this book. The Essential Pit Bull is basically just a revision of the O'Neil APBT(American Pit Bull Terrier) book with different pictures and a tiny bit added(but mostly it's all just rearranged). The pictures are dissapointing too because they use the same people's dogs over and over again inside the same house. But if you do not have the APBT book by O'Neil and don't know if you want the Essential Pit Bull or the O'Neil APBT book just pick whichever one you like best(I like the one by O'Niel better myself, it's cuter) And if after your decision you decide to get a second Pit Bull book I reccomend Pit Bulls for Dummies(I don't know if this site sells it but Pets Mart does)it's my 5th Pit Bull book I'm reading and it's great (and funny). And if you just must get another Pit Bull book 'American Pit Bull Terriers/American Staffordshire Terriers' by Joe Stahlkuppe is a nice and even has beautiful drawings.
Great book for the first time owner.......1999-12-02
If you have just purchased your first pit bull or are just thinking about purchasing a pit bull, this is the book for you. I have owned two pit bulls for 6 months now and I purchased them without having any knowledge of the breed. They are great dogs and are eager listeners, but there are alot of things that I learned from the book that are very helpful. This book will definitely make better dogs and me a better owner. The title fits the book, "Essential" for all owners.

A book only a dog fighter would love.......2006-04-29
Stratton writes books that glorify dog fighting. Anyone that truly loves their dog would read anything from Stratton!!!
This Is Our Dog.......2005-10-01
I have raised and trained American Pit Bull Terriers for 16 years (starting in 1980). This is THE most intelligent and comprehensive book on the subject of APBT's. Anyone that can't stomach this book has no business owning an APBT...PERIOD.
Kristi
excellent.......2005-08-27
I belive this book tells the true history of the APBT and anyone involved in this breed should read this book cover to cover but that is the inherit problem with a lot pit bull owners and breeders is that they don't know their dogs inside and out. The pitbulls I have owned are incredible farm dogs, I don't condone dogfighting but the realization is that dogfighting and dogmen kept this breed alive because 99% of the population didn't know what an APBT was before 1980
Dog Fighting Glorified.......2004-02-06
Unless you honestly think that any animal enjoys fighting another for his life, unless you enjoy the idea of animals abused for entertainment purposes or unless you think that "dog fighting" quaifies as a "gentleman's sport" then I'd suggest you look to someone other than Stratton for your information. His glorification of the past and present of dog fighting is both sickening and and frightening all at the same time.
Calling the low lifes who get their kicks watching animals suffer "dogmen" in an attempt to sanitize this brutality does not change the facts. Dog fighting is not now, nor was it in the past, anything to be admired. His description of match details is enough to make any honest dog lover cringe.
The book does provide some excellent historical information on the development of the breed. However, there are other excellent sources of information on the subject, which manage not to make dog fighting sound like an acceptable activity.
Thank you Mr. Stratton for pounding one more nail into the coffin of this beautiful, loyal and misunderstoond breed.
A Truly Worthwhile Read.......2004-01-02
Although I do agree that Stratton can be a little biased in his exaltation of the breed, I do say that this book is something those wishing to acquire a wealth of Pit Bull knowledge should read. It really is a good book, like Stratton's three other American Pit Bull Terrier books, and is something I enjoyed to read.
Get this book if you like a good read!!
I not only reccomend this book to you but I reccomend Stratton's books "This is the American Pit Bull Terrier" , "The Book of the American Pit Bull Terrier" and "The Truth About the American Pit Bull Terrier"
