Guide to Owning a Ragdoll Cat.......2006-03-08
Excellent reference for Ragdoll owners. This book is so comprehensive you won't need anything else. All you need to know about your Ragdoll and more.
Excellent!.......2005-02-03
I bought this book last week, and have had a lot of fun reading it! We added a Ragdoll cat to our family last year, and I had been looking for a good book about Ragdolls! It gives history of the breed's origin, the special nature of the breed, etc. It is just what I thought I was buying. If you have a Ragdoll, or are planning to get one, this will be a fun and useful tool for you!
A reader from Arizona.......2001-08-28
A wonderful amount of information in a little pocket guide ... I enjoyed this book and found it very useful. It has been difficult to find much information on this wonderful breed, and Ms. Nelson has done a great job trying to impart as many facts as possible while keeping the book a manageable size.
WONDERFUL BOOK!!! RAGDOLLS RULE!!!.......2001-08-25
Whether a Ragdoll is not yet the most enchanting part of your family, or you are already in love head over heels with three or four of these most precious of felines, Susan Nelson's "Guide To Owning A Ragdoll Cat" is the perfect selection for you. Susan knows what she's talking about when describing the soft sweet Ragdoll personality since she's owned by three of these angels herself. The photos are delightfully crisp and clear, picturing a full range of Ragdoll colors and patterns, even the relatively new lynx and flame... and bring out the devastatingly blue eyes that will hypnotize you as if by magic. Susan makes excellent points about the absolute importance of finding a responsible ethical breeder, and makes clear that meeting several breeders and several visits to catteries is highly desirable. She also points out how large some of the Ragdolls can become, and how important it is to properly support their bodies when picked up. Her description of how to make your house Ragdoll friendly (safe), and how to choose toys is invaluable. She stresses the importance of having a scratch tree available. Care of the Ragdoll's health is discussed in detail, from bathing to grooming to dental hygiene to trimming nails... She discusses how to choose a vet, an extremely important topic, vaccinations, spaying and neutering, common feline illnesses... What to feed baby... Bringing Baby home... going on vacation... breeding, showing... I can't think of a SINGLE THING that she neglected to discuss that would be of consequence to anyone interested in Ragdolls. I am so enthused about this book. I wish I had seen it before I spent so much time trying to decide about bringing a Ragdoll home... and it has cleared up several questions I had once I was owned by my Ragdolls. This book is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!! Susan also publishes a wonderful Ragdoll calendar every year...
I was disappointed too.......2001-08-23
While this book provides an adequate summary of the things I have learnt about Ragdolls, I found it difficult to read; not because the language was too technical, but because the writer seems to lack a proper grasp of how to structure paragraphs and how to move from one topic to the next. I found that some of the information was duplicated in other sections which is unnecessary. I was also disappointed at the lack of variety in cats used for the photos; the same cats appear on many pages. I would have liked to see a range of pictures showing the various colours and patterns. Despite these criticisms, I found the information about travelling with the cats useful and also the section about showing. I wouldn't rush out to buy this book if you are simply seeking more information about the breed; you have probably already found out more on the 'net. However, if you just want to have everything you know about Ragdolls in one spot, it is a good record.

Great Book.......2007-10-09
This is a Great Book with Great Pictures. It is easy to read and understand. However.. Beware..The other book that Amazon offers, Exotic Shorthair Cat (Popular Cat Library) by Karen Cummings [Library Binding]is the same as this one, the cover is just different. This book is paperback and the other is hardback and the 2 covers have different pictures. I know because I ordered both thinking I was getting 2 different books. Don't make the same mistake I did. It's just a personal preference, paperback or hardback??
Guide to Owning an Exotic Shorthair Cat.......2007-01-15
This is a great book for cat fans, but especially for those who own or enjoy Exotic Shorthairs. The photos are fantastic and are incredibly glossy and colorful. We were pleasantly surprised at the quality of the printing and the stock that this book is printed on- it made my a great Christmas present for my wife. The reading was entertaining and factual, but the real selling point for this book is the photos.

About to be owned by a Rex!.......2005-12-31
I was given this book as a gift in preparation for my new Cornish Rex kitten. I found it very informative. The author only confirmed my interest in having one of these incredible cats with personality plus++. The most important fact, for me, was her discussion of this breed's low tolerance to the pre-anesthetic, Ketamine. For the "pet quality" owner who will be spaying or neutering their Rex, this is certainly an important topic to discuss pre-operatively with your veterinarian.
Excellent book on Cornish Rexes.......2001-03-20
Greta's book is great. It is extremely informative. This is a great book for people with Cornishes in their family or ones who want to have one in their family. I learned so much more about my cat since I got her book. Excellent photos! A++++
it answered breed-specific questions.......2001-02-22
when i first got my two cornish rex, i read all that i could find on the cornish rex breed, and i discovered that there were no comprehensive books on them. i really needed some tips + how-to's specific to rexes. fortunately, greta's book provides that. the text is informative and easy to read, as well as entertaining. thanks, greta! from one owner who's happier + a little more confident in her cat care now.
A great book about those mutant cats!.......2001-02-21
This book is a wonderful reference for the Cornish Rex owner (really someone owned by a Cornish Rex!) or for people considering taking one of these balls of energy and loving, non-stop attention into their lives. These cats are a little different... and Greta Huls takes you through background, grooming, feeding, healthcare and breed standards in a very interesting, straightforward and informative way. For instance, the information on the breed's intolerance to pre-op drugs is invaluable and possibly a lifesaver. In addition, the wonderful photographs perfectly illustrate the Cornish Rex's beauty and character.
Great book for owners/lovers of Cornish Rex cats.......2001-02-21
As a devoted breeder of this wonderful breed of cats, I can wholeheartly recommend Greta's new book. She did her homework quite well and picked many breeders brains to come up with a great finished product. And a very much needed book for this breed. A+++++++++

Easy read for everyone, very general.......2004-07-28
Nice book, although I did find it a tad bit disappointing! Why?
I got the book before I got my two Tonk kittens, so it was an o.k. starter book.
The book talks a lot about the lovely characteristics about Tonkinese cats and to this I have to agree as I have here 2 very sweet, adorable and gentle purring kittens!
The book however, lacks information that I think are important. It does not mention in detail about the origins and the possible health problems that may occur or originate from the original parental breeds. This is important information to have if you are considering any purebred animal.
The book also covers very minimally on areas regarding pedigrees, various colours, points and torties (as breeders may have different abbreviations for the same colour) deciphering registration and pedigree papers and other documents. This is crucial information especially when talking to your breeder or prospective breeders about your preferences (if any) and about the quality of his animals.
The lack of clarity in the book about what is accepted or not accepted (either colour or healthy physical structure) by the various clubs and associations or what you should look out for when choosing a Tonk kitten is also disappointing. I think regardless of whether you are planning to show your cats or not, if they are of show quality, pet quality or breeding quality,it is good information to have, particularly if you are interested in the breed itself and not just simply owning a cat. Most importantly, it tells you how dedicated the breeder is to his animals and breeding them to produce healthy offspring and not using them as a money-making venture. This might be very important if you are getting your cats shipped to you.
The information about feeding, grooming and caring offered in the book can easily be found in a good book on cat ownership, without having to go specifically to this book.
Overall, I think the book offers a very general skim of Tonkinese cats. If you are seriously considering Tonks, I would recommend that you DO get this book to get a general idea, but also get a good book on good cat ownership as well as Linda Vousden's "Tonkinese Cats". These 3 books combined should give you a very interesting and thorough understanding of what buying and owning Tonks mean.
Good Luck!!!
Very nice book !!.......2003-04-01
I bought this book together with the Tonkinese cat book from Linda Vousden and i find it really good ...
Very nice pictures and good information.

Mostly generic cat info.......2002-12-10
As other reviewers have noted, this book has lovely pictures of scottish fold kitties. However, most of the text is general information on cat care. (Grooming, feeding, vet care, showing, etc.)
What I was hoping for was information on how to find these rather rare cats, how much to expect to pay, and how, if any, their care differs from other cats. There was precious little of that.
Guide to Owning a Scottish Fold Cat ( Library Binding).......2000-06-30
This book with its glossy print pages and laminate photo pages gives comprehensive information in very readable format to those who might own or would like to learn more about the Scottish Fold breed. The photos are numerous so that the breed with its different colorations, longhair or shorthair, as well as ear differences are well represented. Topics covered range from the history of the breed to kitten selection, bedding, health requirements and even showing your Scottish Fold. The readable format and beautiful pictures make this book informative and enjoyable for adults who want more information on the breed as well as families who want to share this book among adults and children. A delightful and extremely well done book!

Excellent for both owners and potential owners.......2000-05-18
This is a really great book, full of the most beautiful pictures of Scottish Fold cats. I enjoyed this book because it covers all aspects of owning a Scottish Fold from their history through to showing. My only complaint (which is why I gave this book 4 instead of 5 stars), is that the information is in places a little brief, however this is a well priced book for any budget. I thoughly enjoyed all of the 35+ photos included in this book which show many of the different colour varieties as well as the longhaired varity. I think that anyone considering the purchase of a Scottish Fold cat, should also consider adding this book to their library.
Outstanding Photos.......2000-03-27
This book had some of the best pictures I have seen of Scottish Folds. The text was informative and educational but it is the photos which catch your eye. They are done with a high gloss finish and are really beautiful. The book contains information on basic care only and touches only lightly on some topics.
If you are seriously interested in the Scottish Fold, cat there are other books which would provide more information, however, if you just want to admire the beauty of the breed, I highly recommend this book. In paperback, it is not expensive and the photos are as nice as the hardcover version.

Comprehensive Guide.......2007-07-16
I think this book is a great Help to anyone thinking of purchasing a Persian.
It covers many, many aspects of the Persian breed. And the information is quite valuable.
I am a breeder of Persions.
I highly recommend this book !
I WOULD RECOMMEND OTHERS BEFORE THIS ONE!.......2001-02-24
The only reason this book deserved a three-star rating is for the nice photography and the basic information. If you know nothing about Persians, and have never had one, then whatever you learn is a plus and you would probably benefit from this book. However, if you are experienced with Persians, you will probably find little here that you do not already know, or have not already read in other general cat care books. Granted, many cat breeds have some distinct characteristics, such as the tendancy of some Persians' eyes to "tear and run," and the extra grooming requirements necessary not only for Persians but for any long-haired cat. It is what you might call "Lesson 101 in Persian Education."
The Guide to Owning a Persian Cat.......2000-05-24
Very informing book. I bought this before I got my persian to help me with the purchase. Beautiful pics. Told me what to look for in purchasing and about breeding.

Chock Full of Information, but Still Lacking Details........2000-12-30
Though this book proved to be helpful when we first bought our new crean point, what struck me is that it doesn't discuss most of the details of cat owning nor does it really give detailed descriptions of illness. We had never had a cat before. How would we know if the darned thing is sick when we bring it home? This book was supposed to help with that, but it only skims illnesses in kittens and cats and spends most of the time discussing showing your new Himalayan. Anyone reading this would be reading it for help on training, diet suggestions and just basic "Cats for Dummies" sort of stuff. While it does offer excellent photos of rare cats and features extra glossy pages making it fun to flip through, it needs more of a point. So Himalayans throw up when they eat grass, any cat will. tell me something I wouldn't know that is unique to long haired or Himalayan cats and kittens, like the watery eyes and constant infections. How to deal with fleas and ticks and how to tell worms would have been nice if they were just doing a a generalized book, but in most aspects you know nothing more on completing this than you did before. It will probably confuse you and make you wonder "Why did they even bother?"

A Breed Apart.......2002-06-09
A great -- and belated -- addition to a helpful and informative series of breed books.
Bill McKee is an inspired author choice, bringing new insight into how the Oci was 'created' just three decades ago. Modest as he is, it's fascinating to think that the farsighted breeding choices he (and a handful of others) made, not so very long ago, have defined one of the most popular and distinctive breeds today. Thanks for bringing him back!
SPOTlight on Ocicats.......2001-06-09
Bill McKee one of the founding breeders of Ocicats, owned the first Ocicat grand in CFA GRC Dalai's Golden Cavalier of Ociville, writes from personal experience with this "wild cat" look alike.
Ocicat owners from all over the world contributed pictures which give the reader a fantastic insite into the numerous colors in this fantastic breed.
The history of the Ocicat and it beginnings in the cat show world is well documented by Bill McKee as he was intrumental in getting the Ocicat accepted by CFA which was the first cat organization to fully recognize the Ocicat for Championship status.
It was indeed a pleasure to Ocicat breeders everywhere to see Bill McKee's name on the first published Ocicat book.

A good 38 page start that doesn't make it to the finish line.......2001-03-01
"Guide to Owning a Maine Coon Cat" starts out strong with a detailed exposition of the various Maine Coon origin theories: the 'Marie Antoinette'; the 'Viking'; the 'Racoon cross'; the 'Lynx cross', among others (I favor the 'Viking' since Maine Coons and Norwegian Forest Cats look an awful lot alike).
The author then spends a good deal of print on the Maine Coon personality and the breed standard and colors. The photographs are beautiful, professional and in color.
It's when we get to the chapters on care, grooming, and feeding that this book strays away from Maine Coons and becomes generic and uninteresting. The photographs deteriorate into advertisements for various grooming and food products. Some show the covers of other books from the same firm that published this book, i.e. T.F.H. Publications, Inc.
Go ahead and buy this book, but buy it for the first 38 pages.
Very glitzy pictures of the many faces of Maine Coon cats........1999-07-14
The basic content of this book is generic to all cats, but what sets it apart from others is the very high quality of its pictures.
The reader can get a very good idea of all the background, behavioral characteristics as well as colors and patterns without a lot of further research. Easy reading for the new MC owner but not as complete as "That Yankee Cat," or "This is the Maine Coon Cat."

Half-baked Book.......1999-05-26
The first half of this book is very good detailing the Maine Coon breed, history and standards. Wonderful photos. The second half fails miserably. It is too generic. It does not go into specific details about this particular breed. It just gives the general feeding and caring patterns which are similar to other cats and other books that I have read. It does not tell you what the ideal weight should be, etc. Another area that it fails is to tell you about a specific hereditary trait which I found out about on the internet: hip dysplasia. So only two stars for this book.
A Really nice book........1998-11-01
This is a small but delightful book. The part about the typical Maine Coon Cats character is very interesting. It also has details about the different coat colors and patterns, showing your cat, and about general cat care. The photographs are top quality.
