Based on protocols in this book, I devised methods to complete my own experiments. I found the insights contained in the book completely indispensable. The range of topics it contains and the detail with which Freshney explains each point made the process of designing conditions for experiments rational and approachable. There are not a lot of glossy pretty pictures, which is a good thing for a no-nonsense instruction manual that gets the point across with what pictures it did have. I found it to be a very good complement to my cell culture class. Everything I learned in the lab was put into context nicely.
Save on Textbook.......2006-08-15
I purchased this book with a description of like new. I would say this is new. The previous person who used this did not even break in the binder. This is an excellent reference book, I have enjoyed reading the text up to this point.
Best Basic Book on Tisssue Culture.......2006-07-07
For many years Freshney's Culture of Animal Cells has been the gold standard of tissue culture reference books. This new edition adds and updates many techniques and continues to be the best book in its area. I use it extensively both for my own research and in teaching classes on tissue culture.
The best book on cell culture.......2005-01-09
Freshney's Culture of Animal Cells is a great book. It is writen on an easy style, it is concise and complete at the same time and it does teach you all the basics (and a little bit more) of cell culture. When I was doing my masters I didn't have a lot of help with my cell culture experiments and this book was fundamental for my research. The book covers everything, starting from the biology of cultured cells, equipments, design of the lab and asseptic technique and going all the way to primary culture, cloning and selection, cell separation, characterization, differentiation and more. The book (hard cover) is pretty resistant and it easily stands going to the bench (where you surely will be using it a lot). If you are thinking about spending money on a book about cell culture techniques this is the book! Don't think twice.

Simple, clear, and to the point.......1999-03-06
This text makes the basic principles behind genetics very understandable. There are short questions integrated into the text itself in addition to questions at the end of each chapter just to make sure you understand before moving on. It's very difficult to get lost in the information due to this fact. All questions are answered fully and completely at the back of the book, as opposed to short one word answers that don't explain why the reader may have gotten a question right or wrong. Highly recommended.

Helpful for genetics boards.......2007-09-27
This book is extremely useful in preparing for the medical genetics, genetic counseling, cytogenetics/molecular board exams. However, be aware that some o fthe inheritance mechanisms/risk calculations are incorrect since they require Bayes which is not covered in the book. Overall, the other sections do provide good review questions.
This book will test you!!!.......2006-12-27
I used this book while studying for the GRE in Biochemistry. The questions are detailed and hard. If you are a wimp who slept in class - this book will kick you. You will feel really low... For preparing for the GRE or the USMLE with their new explanded biochemistry format which is getting heavier into genetics and biochemistry this book will be the new Q-bank you will have to have. My only issue is I was use to using Lange, Appleton & Lange, and Kaplan q-bank books where you get 50 questions set of questions most of the time. This book has a bit different format by subject. So a 50 question timed set may force you to jump around. I am still working the book for the USMLE.

DNA microarrays, or biochips, are small glass chips embedded with ordered rows of DNA and by providing a massive parallel platform for data gathering represent a fundamental technical advance in biomedical research. Such biochips enable the use of advanced fabrication, detection, and data mining technologies that allow data gathering at an unprecedented rate. The first chapter is an introduction to the technology of DNA microarrays, emphasizing the methodological fundamentals of biochips. The next two chapters describe the use of confocal scanning in microarray detection and techniques for the efficient cloning and screening of differentially expressed genes. Chapter 4 describes assay optimization for enzymatic assays and chapter 5 antisense scanning arrays. Chapter 9 describes the use of active microelectronic arrays for DNA hybridization analysis and the last chapter details the use of microarray technology in pharmacogenomics. I am basically a newbie in this area and was hoping to learn the basics of using microarrays for sequencing and expression analysis. While it was somewhat helpful for me, I think that it is aimed at a more expert audience already well versed in molecular biology techniques. I found the documentation and other info on the Affymetrix site to be more comprehensive and explanatory.

This is a book of cytogenetics. (I'm a nonbio major.)
The author seems a person who supervises lab tests for hospitals.
Excellent detailed diagrams explaining mitosis and meiosis.
Looking at chromosomes thru an optical microscope with stains.
Looking at the chromosome bands and interpreting them as genetic defects,
both congenital and acquired (cancerous).
Cell culturing and staining techniques.
Has simplified catalogs of irregularities
including one entry on retinoblastoma.
The resolution of staining technology is about 4 megabases.
Introduction to some specialized higher resolution techniques.
Reading this book awakens us to the coming science-fiction future
where medical diagnosis will be based on the full genome.
