Customer Reviews:
Great book.......2007-05-07
I read his books as a teen and loved them. Bought the whole set for my grandsons, [teens]. They laughed until they cried. [so did I].
Heartwarming.......2007-04-11
This book has many heartwarming stories. It really discribes the way veterinary work was handled years ago. Mr. Herriot is a great story teller.
Wondeful and Warm.......2007-02-21
This book has been sitting on my bookshelf for a while because I passed it over for other newer books... How sorry I am I waited this long! This book is so good... the stories about the different dogs are heartwarming, and heartwrenching...they are filled with almost any dog immaginable and are a delight to read especially for dog lovers. I can't recommend this book enough...
fast and business-like.......2007-01-16
The book arrived in VERY short time, and it was
getting so close to Christmas! I wrapped and mailed
it to a cousin.
50 Warm And Comforting. Hug Your Dog!.......2006-08-13
Do you have a passion for animals? If so, you'll inhale this book. The authors heartfelt emotions can be felt on every page. He clearly adored the animals he cared for over the decades. He described the colorful European countryside, the diverse pets, and the people who owned them in fine detail. Each story is accompanied by an ink sketch that added some warm visuals. My favorite stories were of "Tricki Woo", "Judy The Nurse Dog", "Granville Bennett", and "Cigar." What was nice is that since the stories were broken up, you could not lose your place when you took a break. Yet, I only took one because this was a fast page turner. I have had several dogs in my life and these are the most honest depictions of dog behavior I have read thus far. All animal lovers will enjoy this. Time to hug my dog and adopt another.

Dogs Are Better Than Men
- They never brag about their ex's stunning cleavage.
- They don't moan or sulk if you're a half-hour late.
- They never tell you a Brazilian would really turn them on.
After her most recent disaster with the King of the Unrepentant Jerks, Isabel "Izzy" Palmer is finally convinced that the only male she truly needs in her life is Henry, her lovable part wolfhound, part who-knows-what. Henry's faithful, he adores her madly, and he's great fun to sleep with. So who needs the additional heartache?
But even armed with powerful knowledge and a new resolve, Izzy starts to feel that familiar itch ... and it's all because of Nick. He's a vet for goodness sake -- confident, handsome and compassionate -- if a bit rough around the edges. After teasing her about Henry's unusual looks and questioning her most recent choice in men, Nick then has the gall to turn halfway charming. But he doesn't stop at halfway, and though she already has a best friend, Izzy realizes it doesn't preclude her from having a perfect match, too.
Customer Reviews:
A Girl's Best Friend.......2007-03-17
If you like "chick lit", then this is the book for you. It has a slow start. It does get better in about the 4th chapter but their is a lot of british lingo in this book. The ending was to rushed for my taste!
I Love Dogs!.......2006-03-17
This is a great story and best of all.... the main character loves dogs! Elizabeth Young does it again!
Couldn't get into it..........2006-01-13
I probably shouldn't write a review as I did not finish the book (I got to about page 12 before giving up.) Although I am an avid chick lit reader, I have a problem reading authors from different countries... the slang and references used are generally over my head. I feel more like I'm doing homework trying to figure out what the reference was to than just reading and enjoying the book. I understand Elizabeth Young is a recommended author in the chick lit scene so if you like English authors, you may enjoy this book. Also, if you like Chick Lit in general, I'd highly recommend Janet Evanovich or Whitney Gaskell.
You don't have to have a dog to like this story.......2005-08-02
London real estate whiz Isabel (Izzy) is convinced that the only male who loves her is her odd looking dog Henry. Even her lover cannot be counted upon - he is more devoted to his ex-wife and children then to Izzy.
When Leo cancels yet another engagement, this time a sleepover murder mystery party in Devon, she decides to go without him. There she meets handsome Nick, a friend of her pal Rob. There is an instant attraction to Nick that she cannot deny, but he rubs her the wrong way. Perhaps it is all the teasing he does. Of course, when Leo finally shows up and is jealous too boot, it is an added bonus.
After being devastated by Leo's wandering eye (among other body parts), Izzy finally moves on. During subsequent visits to Devon, her friends scheme to get she and Nick together. They form a friendship, and then she starts to fall for him. But the loss of her best friend brings about a horrific heartbreak she could never thought could happen.
The story is witty and engaging, though the first several chapters surrounding the party are pretty chaotic, particularly with the number of characters not only introduced, but the characters that the characters are portraying - it is hard to keep them straight. Get through the party and the rest of the story is a piece of cake!
A Girl's Best Friend.......2005-03-05
After reading A Promising Man and Asking for Trouble, I was eager to read more from this author. However, I was a bit disappointed. The first half of the book focuses on many characters who are not even related to the main theme of the book participating in a murder mystery. It feels like the author wanted to write two books, and put them together in this- and it doesn't "flow" very well. It's hard to follow the characters at the beginning and leads to disinterest.
The 2nd half of the book is much more like the previous books I'd read by Elizabeth Young and I quickly got into it then. I'm an Anglophile and found British references/terms in the book even I didn't know. That was a nice touch.

Book Description
In combination with the launch of The New Destroyer, brand-new novels continuing this bestselling, action-packed series, Forge is publishing this omnibus of three of the definitive Destroyer novels. Hand-picked by co-creator and co-author Warren Murphy, these three novels serve as both a revisit to the golden age of the series and a great introduction to what Remo Williams and his Sinanju master, Chiun, have been up to for the past thirty years. Included are:
The Destroyer: Chinese Puzzle
The US President calls upon the service of Remo and Chiun to smash an Asian conspiracy that could lead to a US-China confrontation . . . if the superhuman weapon of destruction fails, it could mean the end of the USA.
The Destroyer: Slave Safari
There is a secret only Chiun knows. America has committed a sin against him he cannot pardon -- and he will not even share it with Remo Williams, the Destroyer, whom he has taught all his skills and loves as a son. Deep in Africa, countless feuds that have blazed for many centuries are quickly being resolved by death and massacre. A massive conspiracy is unearthed surrounding the centuries-old slave trade, and only Remo can unravel it.
The Destroyer: Assassin's Playoff
After a brutal fight in the streets of New Jersey, Remo and Chiun find themselves in battle after battle. Their arch-enemy and fellow assassin, the Maestro of Mayhem known as Nuihc, is hoping to knock out his competition. It all comes to a boil in Chiun's hometown in North Korea as the Destroyer finds himself in a fight to the death.

Great Jumping on Point!.......2007-05-08
If you are new to the wild world of the Master's of Sinanju this collection is the perfect starting point. From here new readers can easily hop into the new series (starting with Guardian Angel). Old fans too will enjoy having 3 of the classic, series defining novels in one volume. 3 of the best stories from this long running, action / adventure / fantasy / laugh out loud / two fisted series. Product Description
Meet these two delightful characters in the beautifully illustrated French book by Anne Gutman and Georg Hallensleben. Lisa is the new student, she follows Gaspard everywhere, they fought, she won the race and they became best friends.
Amazon.com
Gaspard and Lisa have been best friends for a long time ("since last year") and this endearing book in Anne Gutman and Georg Hallensleben's charming series of small square books tells the story of their friendship. Despite the fact that he is the only dog in a classroom of humans, Gaspard (a black dog) thinks Lisa (a white dog) looks weird. (And a trifle unwashed, to boot.) But everyone else thinks they look like brother and sister, and when he vociferously protests the comparison, Gaspard and Lisa have their first fight. Things look up when Gaspard discovers that Lisa is a very fast runner and she helps his team win the race. From then on, they are fast friends. Fans of the series will love learning the back story, and those unfamiliar with the dynamic duo will enjoy the sweet tale of a budding, if-at-first-rocky friendship. (Ages 4 to 8) --Karin Snelson

It's raining outside, and Blue has planned a special scavenger hunt for all her friends to follow! Where will Blue's scavenger hunt lead? Find out in this interactive story.
Customer Reviews:
A new story.......2007-08-28
I wasn't sure my son would like this book because it doesn't feature a clue game. However, it is interactive, so he follows along and seems to enjoy it. Blue holds a scavenger hunt for her friends, and the reader plays along to help find the things on her list. I don't recall that this is based on an episode, so I think the story is new.
rainy days are everywhere.......2007-02-12
I bought this book because we were living in the caribbean where if we were stuck indoors, it was because of the rain, or hurricane season. I thought "ok, let's make this look like fun". In fact, it rains everywhere. The story is about a group of Blue's friends who have to stay indoors because of the weather (it could even be a snowstorm if you're in Alaska or Canada!)and find something to do as a fun activity.
It's an entertaining book as you hunt for clues page by page until you piece together all the clues to find your answer. I like Blue's---good idea for children.
Gift for granddaughter........2006-08-19
My graddaughter loves Blues Clues so I thought she would enjoy this book and she did, she has to have this book read to her everynight before she goes to bed.
Blue's Best Rainy Day.......2006-08-17
My niece likes Blue's Best Rainy Day the best out of all the books she has.
What To Do On A Rainy Day?.......2005-08-19
Blue has invited Magenta, Purple Kangaroo, Green Puppy, Yellow Kitten and Orange Kitten over for a play date. The only problems is that it's raining outside!
Blue then decides to set up a scavenger hunt *inside* the house and, with the help of Steve and her friends, they go about the house finding the items on the list.
There are socks, a box, buttons, fabric, glue, and yarn all over Blue's house. What does Blue want to do with all these items once they're found?
You and your youngster will find out when you read Blue's Best Rainy Day. Filled with colorful pictures, children have the ability to test their discrimination skills as they find the specific items on Blue's scavenger hunt list.
Not only that, children are shown that optimism and ingenuity can turn a potentially disappointing situation into an opportunity to use their imagination and have lots of fun...fun they may not have had if things turned out how they expected.
My son requests this book quite often and I'm sure other young readers will enjoy this delightful book as well.

Customer Reviews:
We love this book so much.......2007-06-18
We are reading this book in school. This book won a very big award called the Boston Globe best picture book of the year. Everyone in my class agrees with the judges of that award. We love dog and bear. We love the way Dog and Bear are such good friends together and they are funny too! This book is everybodys favorite book.
Gentle Friendship.......2007-06-02
A dachshund and a multi-colored stuffed bear play out the gentlest of misadventures, all revolving around the meaning of friendship. For example, Dog wants Bear to play with him. Bear is busy reading a book about a dog and a bear that are friends. Bear doesn't want to be disturbed while Dog brings an array of toys to entice Bear away from his book. A sentence in Bear's book finally makes him realize that he should play with Dog - with a nice twist at the end.
Loose, broad black lines depict these two characters as they play out their stories against white backgrounds. The drawings seem deceptively simple but they capture emotions with economy. These two
friends are just too charming for words.
An instant classic.......2007-04-15
I am a first grade teacher and my class was so enamored with this book that I promised them that I would leave a review on behalf of all the children. Dog and Bear are two characters who will, without a doubt be instant classics, right along with Frog and Toad and George and Martha. They are endearing and adorable and were instantly loved by all from the first reading on. Seeger does a superb job of creating characters to whom children can relate and love. To Ms. Seeger: Félicitations! Travail bien fait!

Bubba and Beau, Best Friends.......2007-05-29
Our school librarian read this to our preschool class. They all loved it, as did I.
cute.......2006-10-06
Bubba is a baby and Beau is a dog. Like the title of the book says they are best friends! They have so much in common. They both are very loud, they don't like baths, they chew on everything and they both crawl on all fours! Join them for all of their adventures!
The illustrations were cute and the cover caught the eye of our 3 and 1 year olds.
It's a quick read. Perfect for the lap sit age!
Bubba & Beau May Become Your Child's New Best Friends.......2004-11-09
Appelt's funny and charming tale of the almost simultaneous birth and budding friendship between a boy named Bubba and a puppy named Beau is heartwarming and enchanting. With no apparent idea that they are different species, these naïve babies" bond over their shared first traumas - i.e., the laundering of their beloved "blankie" and their own first baths. Howard's simple charcoal and watercolor renderings of Bubba and Beau could capture the heart of the most hardened soul. Their eyes, expressions, and movements are all enchanting. Howard's equally charming and amusing renderings of the human and dog parents and the Texas ranch where the story takes place provide the "icing on the cake." The result is a book that oozes with life, warmth, security, friendship, and love. Child judges awarded it the 2002 Irma Simonton Black and James H. Black Award for Excellence in Children's Literature. To accommodate short attention spans, Appelt has even broken the story up into five well-defined chapters. Readers wanting more of Bubba and Beau will not be disappointed - there are already two sequels, Bubba and Beau Go Night Night and Bubba and Beau Meet the Relatives. Highly recommended for ages 18 months to 4 years.
Parents AND Kids will delight in this book!.......2004-09-19
This book will pull at your heartstrings while give you a sore stomach from all the laughter! My 12 month old loved this book when I returned from the library with it. When I purchased it for him it became his ONLY book to read. It is so delightful that you will not mind reading it over and over again. You might even develop a slight southern twinge to you accent after a few reads!
I'm still Laughing!.......2002-09-25
This is one of the funniest books. While reading it, one of my co-workers laughed so hard her mascara ran down her face. I've used it in pre-school storytime all week and its been very popular with the 3 to 5 year old crowd. The illustrations are priceless and the charaters a riot.

Book Description
Vereen Bell was a promising young author with three books and dozens of articles to his credit when he was killed in World War II at the age of 33. As a result, his exceptional writing about dogs and the sporting life has gone virtually unnoticed for decades. The title story of this collection, "Brag Dog", is virtually the only story that has been in print over the last 50 years in dog anthology collections. This edition will be slipcased and bound in fine cloth. The etchings and pencil drawings of Marguerite Kirmse, one of the most famous dog illustrators of the century, will accompany the test of this books.
Customer Reviews:
Not your average shaggy dog story..........2000-12-07
Vereen Bell's Brag Dog, and Other Stories is a delightful collection of short stories. Bell, who died in combat during World War II, might have developed into a truly superb sporting writer, someone mentioned in the same breath as Buckingham, Waterman, and Roark. Fine hunting dogs are central characters in these stories, but Bell avoids anthropomorphism in chronicling their intelligence, heart and spirit. Many of the stories take place at field trials. Is man elevated by his association with dogs? There are a number of tales where the two-legged characters find redemption, but there are others where the complexity of the dark side of the human spirit are evident. Some of the stories, especially those featuring Judd Lee, are quite humorous. The language, at times, is a bit stilted; after all, these stories were written before World War II. Yet some of the themes are surprisingly "modern". The book itself is beautiful, featuring a slip cover and fine illustrations from Margaret Kirmse.

The Heart of a Dog.......2000-05-15
Few authors capture the relationship between a dog and their family like Albert Payson Terhune. Whether you are purchasing the book for yourself or a loved one you will find this author to be a great find. I bought Lad:A dog back in junior high on a whim and now that my wife and I are planning a family I wanted to get the entire collection. A must for dog lovers!
This is a book to be shared from generation to generation........1998-06-07
I first read Lad: A Dog when I was a 13-year-old, and then I read every book by Albert Payson Terhune that I could find. Now, I am ordering it for my granddaughter. The author pulls the reader into a life filled with the loyalty, happiness, sadness, and absolute joy that comes with the love of a dog. There is such richness in Terhune's stories and the values he shares.
Great dog stories for kids.......1996-11-25
This author is terrific for kids about 8-14. Lots of excellent dog lore, great stories. Wish there were more books available, especially his all time best, "Lad, A Dog". Check your used bookstores for that one

Book Description
COLTER pairs one of America's most treasured writers with our most treasured "best friend." Colter, a German shorthair pup, was the runt of the litter, and Rick Bass took him only because nobody else would. Soon, though, Colter surprised his new owner, first with his raging genius, then with his innocent ability to lead Bass to new territory altogether, a place where he felt instantly more alive and more connected to the world. Distinguished by "crystalline, see-through-to-the-bottom prose" (Rocky Mountain News), this interspecies love story vividly captures the essence of canine companionship, and yet, as we've come to expect from Rick Bass, it does far more. "With an elegant, often erudite flavor to this story" (Book Page), COLTER illuminates the heart of life by recreating the sheer, unmitigated pleasure of an afternoon in the Montana hills with a loyal pup bounding at your side.

Enjoyable Story!.......2007-06-25
Although I know nothing about hunting birds or hunting dogs I really enjoyed this book-I read it in just a few hours because It was so captivating...I first read about colter in the book DOG IS MY COPILOT and ordered this book after reading an excerpt in that book and I LOVED IT....Of course I cried but I will read anything about dogs and I highly recommend this book....
Dog Lovers.......2006-02-01
For any dog lover this is a great read. Bass is a very sensitive and descriptive writer. You will laugh and cry as you relate to this personal story.
Not really a hunting book...much more........2005-04-23
For Rick Bass, the qualities of innocence, wonder, and vibrancy of life come together in the form of a brown pointer who runs with a smile and an inquisitiveness about the natural world that forms a wonderful, compelling narrative. This book is not really about hunting. Nor is it about dog training; it is much more.
Bass tells the reader about his idyllic life in an extremely remote section of Montana where September ushers in a pre-winter appearance of grouse and pheasants signaling the advent of a new hunting season. Other activities throughout the year seem merely a prelude to this time of year.
And into his life leaps Coulter, an energetic addition to his canine household of Homer and Ann, brought into a seemingly foreign land. Coulter is described as the "runt of the litter", the last one to be selected, and the most unlikely to ever achieve any mastery of seeking out pheasants.
What emerges is a dog that transcends bird hunting and lands smack dab into the heart and soul of his owner.
For anyone who has ever treasured the companionship of a dog-loved and lost them-- this book is a tribute. It is also a reminder of the pure things in life that school a person in the important elements of being alive.
Dog lovers and naturalists will treasure this book.......2004-02-05
I originally picked up this book because of the cover. The darling GSP pup is hard to resist. However, the beautiful imagery within is what stays with me.
I am a confessed dog-lover and outdoor enthusiast. I responded to Bass's descriptions of Colter's hunting skills and of the natural world. I enjoyed Bass's humility and sense of humor. Mostly, I could just relate to how much he loves his dog. I feel the same. I could not put the book down and have reread certain passages upon finishing Colter.
A great choice for people who appreciate the magic of working dogs-dogs that live to hunt or herd or help. Also, anyone who loves the Montana wilderness would like Colter, as well.
Not Just for Dog Lovers.......2003-09-17
First off, I'm a big fan of Rick Bass' writing. Clear, compelling, and crisp. "Colter" is definitely a story about a dog and his owner. But it transcends the heart-string pulls that might imply and manages to paint a picture of place, character, and neighborly interaction in the American West as well.
If you enjoyed Rick Bass' "Winter" or his later story collections, "Colter" might be a welcome read.
