train don't complain.......2007-05-23
I have been a dog trainer for many years. This is one of two books that I suggest to my clients. So much common sense with a dash of humor. Easy to read and implement to your training program. Great book.
Great Book.......2007-02-06
This is a very good book for training yourself to talk to dogs.
Guess what?.......2006-09-15
Big suprise, dogs know that we aren't dogs. The gig is up, dogs don't relate to us the way they relate to dogs. Get a book that really teaches you how dogs think and learn.
The best puppy training.......2006-05-09
The best training book I've ever used. Has easy to use schedules and day-by-day steps for bringing up a healthy, well-trained dog.
Humane, kind, helpful.......2006-02-04
I love Carol Lea Benjamin's books. Check out her Secondhand Dog and Surviving Your Dog's Adolescence, too. :)
My very favorite dog books are by Patricia McConnell. Her wonderful books are wise, humane, and so enjoyable. I highly recommend The Other End of the Leash, Beginning Family Dog Training, and How to be the leader of the pack...And have your dog love you for it.

Good Training Book on Goldens.......2000-05-01
Easy to read book with lots of color pictures of goldens in every day life. Well organized. Helpful hints in blue boxes that catch your attention. Goldens are smart dogs who can easily think of things to do when bored; book has helpful information on counteracting this problem. Would recommend this book as a good first book for anyone interested in goldens.

Training the right way!!.......2005-10-10
The Delmar smith methed is a great way to train a hunting bird dog. One of the best things about this book is knowing what is important to your bird dog. Nine out of ten people now days will tell you to start training on birds before pups learn to run. Not Delmar. If you let them be a pup for the first year you will have twice the dog you would have had!! Very informational. Think like a dog to train a dog...
Excellent.......2005-05-10
I used this book 20 years ago to train a Brittany and have now purchased it again for a new dog. The methods and advice are not only unique to Delmar but also highly effective. Not to mention a humorous read.
informative and funny.......2003-06-13
This is my first time owning and training a gun dog. I purchased and read this book before I bought my puppy. I was skeptical but Delmar's methods DO work. This book set the basis for what others would try to teach me later-- and I was able to share information with them as well. My dog performed at an early age as a result of Delmar's advice. You have to be able to go along with the writing style -- which I found quite humorous and much more fun to read than a text book. A great addition to any library!

It belongs in your library.......2002-09-17
The real strength of this book is that it gets you in the right mindset for gun dog training. The techniques are simple yet ingenious. I've used most of them and built my training foundation around Delmar Smith's principles.
Buy this book and several others. See a professional trainer. There's no harm in educating yourself.
The best.......2002-04-07
This is one of the finest dog training books I have read. Tarrant's books read well and Smith is a proven success in dog training. The book has been around for awhile, but it still has signinficant value. I hope the publisher keeps printing it for quite some time. I will be using a lot of the Delmar Smith method to train my new pup.

Good introduction to basic training, but no new information.......2007-08-24
This book would be great for anyone considering a Siberian Husky, or a new dog owner as it contains basic dog care tips and an introduction to training techniques. I was looking for a book with some special hints for training huskies (as they can be difficult dogs to train) and was disappointed. Although the title is 'How to Train You Siberian Husky' a large amount of space in the book is dedicated to caring for your dog - not training.
I needed immediate help with my Husky........2005-08-31
I adopted a 4 month old Husky who was completely out of control. I was desperate to find help. This book contained the answers that I needed to control this pup. Thank you!
Train your Siberian the easy way..........2005-05-07
Training a Siberian Husky is quite a challenge considering the personality of a Siberian. They are playful, independent, and intelligent. You have to take these traits into consideration and go from there. Treats are about the only motivator I have found to get one moving and I don't mean the ones from the grocery store. Very smart, a Siberian will work if she wants to work or provided there is a benefit. If you own one or are thinking of getting one, please read this book. Siberian Huskies for Dummies is also a good choice as well. This book is very short with concise instructions. I think even a mature teenager could manage to train with this book.
How to Train Your Siberian Husky (Tr-105).......2004-01-05
I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to learn how to train their Sibe... Good sound info with heartfelt pictures. It will be one of my quick referral book when needed...

How to Train Your BIchon Frise.......2002-01-13
This is a excellent book on the total care of the Bichon Frise. It is the only book necessary to answer all your questions. I'd definitely rate this book a 5+ ! It is a wonderfully illustrated hardback that you will want to keep as a reference. It offers great advice from littering to the elderly adult dog.

Great Book.......2007-08-16
Great book. This book is perfect for someone thinking about buying a APBT. Even a great book for someone who owns one. Good buy.
Disapointed.......2007-06-08
When I bought this book I was looking for various training techniques that have been sucessful for pit bulls. I figured a book called "How to train your american pit bull terrier" would be a perfect match for what I was looking for. The only thing I did find was a thin reference geared towards pit bulls with a tiny section reserved for training. Most of the training information consited of how to find a good trainer, not specific techniques. This book is very basic and vague and I was quite disapointed.
Hmm.......2006-08-09
Unfortunately, this book wasn't what I expected it to be. I have a puppy that's rambunctious, loud, stubborn and playful... I needed help learning training techniques that would help me keep me under a little more control.
What I got from this book was a lot of common sense put down in book form.
Sure, if your first dog EVER is a pitbull, this book might be helpful. However, as a person who's owned and been around dogs all of her life, the techniques and proceedures in this book are so basic as to be absurd when included in this book.
There were perhaps one or two points in the whole of the text that taught me anything, and then they weren't anything to do with obedience training.
Telling the reader to take his/her dog to obedience class was not what I was looking for in a book.
In short, the book is lacking.
It might be useful to a novice, but not to an experienced dog owner.
Waste of money.......2004-01-29
This book describes only puppies who are "fearful" - afraid of a leash, afraid of your absence, etc. etc. Most of the pit bull puppies I know are rambunctious and self-assured. There are no helpful tips for training those puppies.
Also, the author says that if you have a full time job, you shouldn't adopt a pit bull. Most of the dogs in local shelters are put to death, and pit bulls, as well as pit bull mixed, are quite common in this state. If you have a fenced yard and will spend time, effort, and money to lovingly raise a dog, then I say go ahead & adopt one. They have barrels of energy, but are very loving animals and deserve a chance.
Excellent book.......2001-11-06
Well, i have a bull terrier, but i didn't find a book like this to raise and train my dog, however this book had been a great purchase because these breeds are very similar in their behaviors.
so if you have a pitbull or bully, just buy it.

The Information You Need in Easy to Read Reference.......2006-02-08
The author gives clear and consice advice that really works. You will not be disappointed
Easy to Understand and Good Ideas.......2005-10-21
This book was great. My 3.5 month old labrador retriever already does "sit", "down" and "shake" on command, thanks to this book. He is also fully crate-trained. I would recommend this book to anyone.
Yet Another Useful Guide To Raising Labrador Retrievers!.......2005-01-21
Here is an attractive entry by author Liz Palika, a book that takes a loving look at America's singular and by far most popular wonder dog, the Labrador Retriever. As she points out so well, there are few other animals who draw such love from humans as a dog, and surely the Lab is the most loveable of the breeds. Here she presents the Labrador Retriever in all its wonder and does a yeoman service to the rest of us by enumerating all of the superb qualities the dog has to offer potential human enthusiasts. They are by reputation excellent working dogs, both as field dogs and as guide dogs for the disabled. They are also incredibly loyal, and the news services are often filled with wonderful and heartwarming stories of Labs crawling out on the ice to save their masters, often at considerable danger to themselves. Nonetheless, they stand by our sides.
Therefore, this book, "How To Train Your L:abrador Retriever" is a great tribute to the breed, and is chock-full with stories and photos that actively serve to substantiate what might otherwise seem as idle boasts and overethusiastic praise. In fact, for anyone who spends any time around Labs, like me, it is hard not to use superlatives when describing them. More than one of the stories herein will bring a smile to your face, a tear to your eye, and the idea in your noggin perhaps it is time to consider getting one of these incredible creatures into you rlife, and that of your extended family. they boost the energy level in any room they enter, are incredible chick-magnets, and have been shown to reduce high blood pressure and dissipate depression through their mere presence. This is a wond
ful book, and one I am sure you will enjoy!
Useful.......2002-01-26
A good useful book for anyone who needs some help training a Lab. Goes over a lot of general lab information as well as training tips.
This makes it easy!.......2001-03-03
This book makes training your Labador Retriver easy to train.

This was the perfect book. There were lots of photos and extra tid-bits throughout, plus all of the information I needed for choosing and training my Dobe puppy. It was very thorough, but easy to read.
GOOD BOOK.......2001-03-30
This is a very good book. It really surprised me. All the methods sound very good, and will hopefully work. (iam getting a doberman in 2 weeks). I suggest you peoplr give this book a try.

21 days to train your dog.......2007-05-12
Received my book in a timely fashion. Have been working with my Great Dane with this book and is working well. Excellent purchase choice.
Clear and direct.......2006-03-16
Clear, direct guidance. The author recognizes that dogs are not equals, they need training to be obedient and keep them safe as well as make them socially welcome. A good, practical book.
Wonderful Resource!.......2005-08-23
This book is very informative, and a must have if you want to work with your dog without paying a professional trainer. The picture illustrations are a perfect compliment to the written instructions. I especially liked the detail given about other obedience issues such as dog language and how aggression begins between dogs. This book is a permanent addition to our living room reading material!

Train your Shetland Sheepdog.......2006-03-10
I was disappointed in this book. It was a "read between the lines" kind of book. Was not helpful in training my dog at all.
If Sheltie is the Breed for you--this is your book!.......2002-04-30
Agree with with other reviewer that this is a great resource for sheltie owners, or propsective owners. She's correct in providing the background to why Shelties aren't the breed for everyone, as they demand attention.
She provides needed tips on how to keep the Shelties in your life happy and you in turn happy with them! They do need to work and she provides training tips on doing just that.
Info is provided on selection, stages of development, early puppy training, basic obedience, formal training, problem prevention and solutions, and advanced sports and activities.
We have our two Shelties through obedience and now into agility and can vouch how much fun this breed truly is. This book will aid your enjoyment of this intelligent and loyal breed.
Great Book.......2002-03-18
This book had great information about the Sheltie. I felt it was quite helpful to me. It also had great pictures!!
If you have a sheltie, get this book........2001-08-03
This is quite easily the most useful sheltie book that I own. Most books about shelties are slim volumes that talk about grooming, the breed history, and a little about temperment. This book dives right in to telling you how to housebreak your sheltie, how to train them to sit, heel, come and stay, and more. It covers a little about competing with shelties in obedience, agility, and herding, and has tons of wonderful pictures. It's full of great, practical, advice. If you're a new dog owner, you should really pick up this book and read it.
