Fans of Bill Martin Jr. and Eric Carle's Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? and Polar Bear, Polar Bear, What Do You Hear? will be delighted to see another title in this lilting call and response series. Much like their earlier picture books, Panda Bear features a string of fine feathered (and furry and scaly) friends watching over each other. In this book, however, all the animals are endangered, from a swinging spider monkey to a strutting macaroni penguin (kids will get a kick out of that name!) to a splashing sea lion. Carle's trademark tissue paper collages will be as familiar--and welcome--as the text ("Whooping Crane, Whooping Crane, what do you see?" "I see a black panther strolling by me."); young readers will quickly get the hang of the rhythm and join right in. The book concludes on a hopeful note, with a dreaming child seeing the ten f! eatured animals "all wild and free--/ that's what I see!" Martin includes a note on endangered species that may spark concern and interest in older readers--our hope for these disappearing creatures. (Ages 3 to 8) --Emilie Coulter
Book Description
Thirty-five years after their first groundbreaking collaboration, the creators of Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? and Polar Bear, Polar Bear, What Do You Hear? reunite to address the important topic of animal conservation. A Bald Eagle soars, a Spider Monkey swings, a Macaroni Penguin struts, and a Red Wolf sneaks through Bill Martin Jr's rhythmic text and Eric Carle's vibrant images, and all are watched over by our best hope for the future-a dreaming child.

Exciting new spin on Brown Bear, Brown Bear.......2007-10-03
This book follows the same pattern as the classic Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? but with an exciting new spin -- exotic, endangered animals. It also has a delightful surprise ending that makes it perfect for a bedtime story.
-Sherry North, author, Because You Are My Baby
Sorta Weird.......2007-09-11
My 2-year old twins like this book because they like to see the animals, but I think they'd get more out of it if more mainstream animals were used. I think they're a little thrown by animals like "macaroni penguin" - sounds like food to them. The dreaming child part is weird looking too.
I think it's great to use endangered animals, although my kids aren't exactly as concerned about animal endangerment as I am. It's not a bad book or anything, but honestly, if I had read it in a bookstore, I wouldn't have bought it.
There is hope!.......2007-08-19
My son loves Eric Carle books, and this is our most recent addition to his collection. I just caught on to the fact that all of the animals are endangered, but I think it's so cool that one of them isn't anymore! The bald eagle was recently taken off the endangered species list. I think that gives us (and especially kids) hope that more of those animals can come off that list, and maybe even in their lifetime.
Everyone should have this book.......2007-06-16
In a world of highways, malls, highrises, greed and land excavation, it's good to find a book that dares to dream of thick forests, lush jungles and untouched oceans where wonderful creatures can thrive. This is my favorite of all the "bear" books. It's statement is strong and I can't wait until my 16 month old daughter can recognize it.
I should like this one, but..........2007-03-07
I oughta like it, I want to like it, but it just left me flat. More to the point, it left my kids flat. The two stars I gave this were for the illustrations -- they are really cool, as you'd expect with Eric Carle. Normally, you can't go wrong with Bill Martin, but I guess everybody has their bad days. The language doesn't flow as well as the other bear books, and that makes it a little awkward for reading aloud. We have Brown Bear, Brown Bear and Polar Bear, Polar Bear, and both are big favorites with the under-3 set around our house. Panda Bear just doesn't make the grade.

The world rejoices each time a rare giant panda is born. When tiny Hua Mei was born on August 21, 1999, her caregivers gave her extra protection from any potential dangers. For the first weeks of her life, this baby could be viewed only with a camera in her den at the San Diego Zoo. She and her mother, Bai Yun, spent the time bonding--panda papas have nothing to do with the raising of their cubs. Gradually, as Hua Mei grew bigger and stronger, she began to play and eat on her own, and the world was finally allowed to see her when she was about five months old.
Who can resist the allure of a cuddly baby panda? Joanne Ryder, author of many popular books about creatures great and small, including Earthdance, traces the young life of a panda with minimal text and many remarkable photos from the Zoological Society of San Diego. Curious readers will learn that, at birth, panda cubs are more than 800 times smaller than their mothers and that they are blind for the first few months of life. Parents and kids will love reading this book together and contemplating the parallels between fragile panda cubs and human babies. (Ages 3 to 7) --Emilie Coulter
Book Description
Meet Hua Mei
With fewer than one thousand giant pandas left in the world, the birth of Hua Mei at the San Diego Zoo in 1999 was a cause for celebration. Little Panda chronicles the adorable panda's first year, as she grows from a four-ounce newborn to a curious, playful cub.
Award-winning writer Joanne Ryder's appealing, simple yet scientifically accurate text and irresistible, exclusive photographs from the World-Famous San Diego Zoo combine to make Little Panda a treasure for animal lovers of all ages.

Panda baby.......2007-07-08
This book with its beautiful real-life illustrations would be a great one to give a child as a gift. It would acquaint him or her with the life process of a baby panda's first year. The words and sentences are short and readable for a child in the early grades. It would also be a good read-aloud book for someone with a small child who loves to be read to. I highly recommend it.
Nice factual book for 4-6 year olds.......2007-01-15
My daughter is panda-crazy, so we purchased this book as a Christmas present. It was everything we hoped it would be: nice overview of panda development leveled for kindergarten/first grade readers. It has straighforward text for younger readers, coupled with more detailed information for older readers. With my 3 year old son, we read the straight text; with my 5 year old daughter we read the little detail blurbs as well. It has lovely photos and since it deals with a baby panda it was a huge hit with my kids. I would recommend this to anyone with kids who love pandas, or anyone looking to add science/nature books to their pre-school/kindergarten collection. Additionally, I would recommend Emperor's Egg, which deals in a similar way with penguins, although it uses illustrations rather than photos.
If you didn't love Pandas before this book, you will now!.......2005-07-15
The photos in this book are absolutely amazing! Starting with Hua Mei's 1st teeny tiny black & white photo camera that had been installed inside the panda den, and the book ending 1 year later. I can't say enough about the photos!
This is the 1st year in the life of Hua Mei and is pronounced Hwa May. In China, one name can mean different thing and Hua Mei's means Splended Beauty AND China-USA. The birth of Hua Mei in 1999 in the San Diego Zoo connects both China, the country where pandas roam and here in the Us where she lives.
This is one of those books that grows with it's young reader! The author Joanne Ryder lots of information on each page. There is a big bold font that tells the story and then a smaller not so small font that gives additional information! I just can not say enought wonderful words about this book! A definate book to have in your home library!
Beautiful and educational.......2001-03-22
I'll be perfectly honest: I love following Hua Mei's story at the San Diego Zoo web site. I'm a complete sucker for panda stories. So I was pleased to finally see a more permanent record of Hua Mei's first year.
While I bought this book for the photographs (which are plentiful, large, and beautiful), this book should also appeal to children and parents because of its text (or perhaps I should say "texts"). The author has written two parallel texts: one fairly simple and straightforward for younger readers, printed in large type, and a slightly more complex one in smaller type, giving more detailed information about pandas. By creating a book that appeals to more than one reading level, Ms. Ryder has given us a book that parents will be able to share with their young children as they grow older and learn to read.
Make no mistake; this is not a detailed textbook about pandas. If that's what you're looking for, I recommend George Schaller's LAST PANDA (also available from Amazon.com, coincidentally enough). But this is a good introduction for young children, who may be able to indentify with the young Hua Mei. For older panda lovers, this is an excellent collection of photographs. The only thing that keeps me from giving this book five stars (besides the fact that I never give anything five stars) is that I can never get enough information about Hua Mei.
Book Description
In Ray Strobel's gift book A Black Eye Isn't the End of the World, photos of adorable pandas illustrate uplifting messages about basic life principles.
The charming animals provide a cuddly, warm perspective on handling painful setbacks ("When life knocks you down, nap"), establishing camaraderie ("Share more than small stuff"), maintaining friendships ("Don't hog the log"), and managing everyday stress ("When panic threatens, go for a stroll").
Some more examples of the panda philosophy:
" "When you cuddle, cuddle with conviction."
" "Frolic while you're still frolicable."
" "Look at life sideways."
" "Tickle, don't scratch."
A Black Eye Isn't the End of the World is an ideal gift for anyone who needs a quick and thoughtful pick-me-up.

This is a great book. It reads fast and the photos of pandas are simply beautiful. I recommend it for all ages.
colorful and insightful.......2006-01-16
I really enjoyed the pictures and the inspiring words in this book.

This beautifully photographed book covers the panda's home and habits, feeding behavior, breeding, and survival in the face of human encroachment and deforestation. The author traveled to remote areas of China to photograph the elusive, endangered giant panda--it took her eight trips to find one. Her photos of both giant and red pandas in the wild are incredible, both fortifying and belying the image most Westerners have of cute, cuddly zoo animals. This is a fascinating introduction to a disappearing species.
Book Description
This top-selling series introduces the wild creatures of the world and examines the natural world. Good general introductions for ages 10+, these volumes contain the knowledge, personal experiences, and research of leading naturalists and scientists, accompanied by stunning photography. Unless otherwise noted (*), all volumes are sturdy paperback.
Customer Reviews:
Amazing photos!.......2007-05-14
The pictures in this book are adorably charming. They depict a little of these wonderfil bears, the pandas. The text flows easily and gives great information. to the reader. A must-have for every pandarazzi!
An easy-to-understand guide to giant pandas.......2005-11-20
This book, with lots of pictures of the cute black-and-white aniaml, makes a great coffee-table book, but it's also packed with easy-to-understand materials, facts, about the giant panda.
The author is a British marine biologist-turned wild life photographer who has traveled to southwest China many times to photograph wildlife, including the giant panda. The photos in the book are from her collection, and most of the pandas featured are young ones who tend to exhibit an insatiable curiosity about the world and about bamboos. In one word, the pandas are just cute.
But this is a not a picturebook. It's a book about pandas, their history, their homes and habitat, and their various behaviors. At the time of publication it had not been decided what family the giant panda actually belonged to -- it was not until 2002 or so that DNA analysis "conclusively" concluded that the panda is actually a bear. Other than this, the book gives accurate facts about aspects of the panda. There is also a short chapter, and a couple pictures, on the red panda, aka the lesser panda.
I recommend the book to anyone interested in facts about pandas because it tells you pretty much everything about these cute creatures as well as presents the materials in an easy-to-understand manner. The author writes clearly, and the pictures of pandas enhance the reading experience.
Pandas Forever!.......2000-08-18
Being a huge fan of the Panda, I am a very biased reviewer. However, I thoroughly enjoyed this book about my favorite animal. The details and histories of the panda were not the best that I have ever read, nor were they the least filled with information.
Therefore, if you enjoy the panda, I would recommend that you add it to your collection of books.
Book Description
A heartwarming story about a small panda whose home is threatened by the encroachment of humans.
On the slopes of Misty Mountain, a mother panda cuddles her baby. His name is Pi-shu, and when he was born he was no bigger than one of the patches around his mother's eyes. Pi-shu the little panda loves to explore the slopes of the mountain where he lives with his mother Fei-Fei. One day when Pi-shu ventures farther down the mountainside, he encounters people for the first time. They are clearing more and more trees from the forest. It is no longer safe to stay, so Pi-shu and Fei-Fei set out on an arduous journey across the mountains in search of a new home. John Butler's compelling words and his exquisite, lifelike paintings help young readers understand the joy and tenderness of giant panda families. A Panda Facts page at the end of the book invites readers to learn more about this endangered species.
Customer Reviews:
Lovely Panda Book.......2007-01-15
This book has a message to its story -- baby panda is born, lives in idyllic bamboo forest with mother, encounters noisy lumberjacks, must leave forest for new, unpolluted home -- but the illustrations are lyrical and lovely and the message so understated that it doesn't feel heavy-handed at all. It was a big hit with my 5 year old.
Darling!.......2005-02-14
I love pandas *points to nickname* but this book will make all avid fans for the wonderful animals. Beautifully illustrated, it's about a panda cub must move to another region of China because its home is being disturbed by tree-cutters. This is a real problem for pandas. Hunting has been prohibited, but what about hunting of their habitats? This picture book is not meant for facts, but gives one a general idea of the wildlife that inhabits the Himalayan Mountains. You will also see pictures of baby Yaks and monkeys, all coloured and drawn with such talent that you can't keep from staring at them. If I had to sum up this book it one word it would be cutecutecutecutecutecutecuteCUTE!!!!
Amazing New Children's Book.......2004-11-02
Pi-Shu the little panda adores exploring the slippery slopes of Misty Mountain, where he shares a home with his beloved Mother, Fei-Fei. However, one day, as young Pi-Shu is exploring the mountainside, he encounters humans. Humans who are cutting down the forest, and destroying the homes of the many animals around. Realizing that it is no longer safe, Pi-Shu and Fei-Fei set out on a journey to find a new home, where humans do not roam.
I am a huge fan of John Butler, as well as pandas, so I was ecstatic to read PI-SHU THE LITTLE PANDA. Butler's wonderful prose, alongside his gorgeous illustrations make PI-SHU THE LITTLE PANDA an absolute must-have!

An Absolute delight.......2002-12-03
This book is an absolute delight! My kids (3 + 4) read it again and again! It has introduced a wonderful and endangered animal to them in a very accesible way. The pictures are lovely and the story is touching, truthful and informative. Young kids really relate to the Mommy panda caring for her baby.. Of course it is a bit anthropomorphic, as all good children's books are. The author also has a fact page and references for more info! Your little one will LOVE this book!
