Book Description
Breeding the ultimate racehorse has challenged the minds of breeders and theorists for more than 200 years. Now, for the first time, students of bloodstock breeding have an opportunity to examine the theories of genetics, biomechanics, nicking, dosage, inbreeding, outcrossing, statistical methods, female family lines and heart score. The works of Bruce Lowe, Federico Tesio, Harry Laughlin, Joe Estes and many more are examined and evaluated.
Here, in one volume, is a wide and varied assessment of the major breeding systems and theories, as well as the history and background of each. The writers give readers all the necessary information they need to implement the theory and make it part of a breeding program. They also verify the relative scientific validity of the theories and various approaches to breeding. This, more than any other factor, sets this book apart from other attempts to offer breeding theory to owners and breeders. The authors ask, "Does this really work and, if so, how often has it been proven or disproven?"
By studing the varied breeding approaches and theories, modern breeders can use the information that best fits their breeding program.

Customer Reviews:
Stretch Exercises for Your Horse: The Path to Perfect Suppleness.......2007-05-16
Very informative. I learned how to stretch the muscle so that the horse was more supple and less likely be to injury in competition and everyday use
An Important Step to Riding Well.......2007-05-10
One of the greatest mistakes riders make is not preparing their horses to rider. They just jump on and go. They don't warm the horses up or stretch them after they have worked to keep muscles supple. Then they wonder why their horses become lame or injured. The stretches suggested in this book are a great way to treat your horse like the athlete he is.
Great reference.......2007-05-02
For whoever said there is nothing new in this book you must be a very proficient and contentiousness horse person. I found this book pack full of goodies. Perhaps there is nothing "new" for you, but for most horse owners it is a fantastic book.
It has clear illustrations of all the stretches and explanations about why you do them. I also find this a good book for taking out to the barn and working through with my horses.
They enjoy the change from being ridden and the exercises also make good warm up and cool downs. They are the basic exercises but you don't really need to learn 999 different exercises. Just do the ones in this book well.
Equine Stretching Routines.......2007-04-12
Learn your horse's anatomy and put your new knowledge to work as you train your horse and develop stretching routines.
VERY CLEAR AND EASY TO UNDERSTAND........2007-04-10
ALREADY KNOWN EXERCISES,NOTHING NEW.... ANYWAY A GOOD CONFIRMATION. VERY CLEAR AND EASY TO UNDERSTAND.

Book Description
When Blessed Are The Blood Mares was published in 1978, no other single source existed that contained such a wide range of information on the care of the breeding of mare from mating, through gestation, to foaling and nursing, and on the care of the young horse. Now there is: the second edition of this classic.
Customer Reviews:
For the serious broodmare manager..........2007-06-08
I really enjoyed this book, especially because it went into detail about what to look for in the neo-natal foal and post-partum mare. It gave distinct things to look for which helped enable me to make the decision to call my vet in the middle of the night, and eventually saved my colt's life. Indispensible book to have on the book shelf if you breed and foal your own mares. Another great thing about this book, is that it goes into detail about when to re-breed after foaling, when not to, and what steps you will go thru (explained) on how to get her pregnant. Not quite enough information for me on follicle size measurements, edema measurements, short cycling, etc., but for the most part, this is a must have book.
Pleasant and informative.......2003-09-06
Provides people new to breeding a good overall view of the process. It is easy to read and a good reference. This is not the highly technical manual that would turn away the amatuer. At the same time it lacks depth to be a truly serious resource.
great book.......2003-01-03
A must have for the average horse person. This book is extrememly informative, written in a lively way that keeps you reading from start to finish, and is understandable by the layman. I would recommend it highly.
Excellent resource for novice breeders.......2002-05-29
This book is a great resource for novice breeders. There is great information and knowledge will help you put your mind at ease. I recommend this book for everyone who is hoping for their first foal.
no job for a lady.......2000-12-31
Honestly, I have not read these professional advice books by Dr. Lose. However, If I ever have cause to need advice or mares, foals, or any other health advice on horses, I will be sure to consult her teachings on the subject. I just want to take this opportunity tell anyone interested in her current publications to please read the one book that really gives us the opportunity to have an inside look into what her world is really all about, and to see how she grew into that world. That book is "No Job For A Lady". See where it all started! What a charming and engrossing viewpoint projected by a great veterinarian in the making. Thanks, Phyllis. I read this when I was 10 years old, and 22 years later, I still remeber what I saw.

Equine Breeding Management and Artificial Insemination.......2000-04-26
This book is a must for any owner or manager of an equine breeding facility. It is technical, but relatively easy to read and complete. Whether you're an expert whose been in the business for years or a novice just getting started, this is the primer you've been looking for. It's one you'll want to keep handy for looking up answers to new questions or reviewing the answers to your old ones. Kudos to the author for a job well done. It's worth noting that no matter what breed of horses you work with, you will still find this reference invaluable.

Customer Reviews:
great refresher course!.......2006-07-30
I purchased this book to become reacquainted with equine reproduction after spending a year in equine practice without reproduction. The text was direct, succinct, and well-versed without extra details that come with other in-depth textbooks. There are many pictures and diagrams, though I would have preferred to see more present. Overall, I feel that the Manual is a great refresher course for veterinarians and equine reproduction specialists. However, I would not recommend this book as the sole text while learning equine reproduction for the first time.
Not a good book.......2004-02-11
This book is for the very advanced. It uses all medical terminology and is very basic with details. They assume it is for vet students. There is no glossary and there are highlighted words that they never explain. It is pure awful!!!!
Manual of Equine Reproduction.......2000-02-24
This book covers every aspect of equine reproduction from the preperation of a stallion prior to the start of the breeding season all the way through to the care and management of the mare and foal post partum. This book covers in absolute detail, the step by step format of every situation that would or could occur during the 15 to 18 month period that leads from conception to post foaling management. This is a book that every farm manager as well as the weekend horse breeder should have access to 24 hours a day.

Customer Reviews:
very informative.......2007-10-01
This miniature horse book has all the info anyone would need. It tells you everything step by step. I knew nothing before I read it and now I feel as though I might know everything about a mini.
Great book to get an overview on American Miniature Horses.......2006-04-29
This is a great book to purchase if you are looking at an overview of American Miniature Horses and what is involved with their care, upkeep and what one can do with these unique equines from keeping them as pets to having them as show animals.
It covers all topics with sound advice and handles even "sensitive" topics in the field with care without bias.
I have owned, bred and shown American Miniature Horses (AMHA and AMHR) since 1992 and have been involved with horses of various breeds for 37 years.
Very Disappointed.......2006-03-29
I bought the book hoping to gain some additional insight into the world of showing & breeding mini horses. If you have been around the show ring at all and have some showing experience - especially in hand, then this is not the book for you. Clipping a bridle path is the same regardless of size of horse. It is this type of elementary subject material discussed in the book. As for breeding, the author recommends live cover as AI for mini's is almost non-existent. I believe you could gain more knowledge from the miniature horse registry than from this book.
If you have absolutely no experience around horses - then this book may be a great first read as the principles for care are the same for minis as it is the regular size horse.
A must have for serious miniature horse enthusiasts.......2006-03-01
This is a great book for beginners and seasoned breeders alike. Heaps of information.
Very Pleased...........2005-10-24
I recently purchased this book at a Mini Show and I am so glad I did.
I have horses, but not mini's. I am hoping to purchase a mini soon and this book was very informative. It has helped me to be able to ask the right questions about the mini I have been looking to buy. And it also helped me to see the differences between owning a mini and a regular horse.
If you are looking to purchase a mini and need more information to make an informed decision....this is the book for you...

My equine science bible.......2005-04-29
I have owned, raised, and trained my own horses from a very young age and even though I already know the basics, I found this book to be very useful. From basic horse keeping to in depth descriptions of many equine health problems, this book is one that even the experienced rider and horse owner should have. It contains fabulous drawings and seperates each sections accordingly. I have not found a basic question that this book couldn't answer. It is a must have for any horseman.

Book Description
The most expensive thirty seconds in sports.
Every year, on Valentine's Day, the great Thoroughbred farms open their breeding sheds and begin their primary business. For the next one hundred and fifty days, the cries of stallions and the vigorous encouragement of their handlers echo through breeding country, from the gentle hills of Kentucky to the rich valleys of California.
First appearing as an article in The New Yorker, Stud takes you into this strange and seductive world. We move from Lexington's Overbrook Farm, where the world's leading sire, Storm Cat, a lightly raced eighteen-year-old, brings in around thirty million dollars a year; to the auction halls, where sheiks and bookies (known more casually as the Doobie Brothers and the Boys) bid millions for Storm Cat's well-bred offspring. We visit Three Chimneys, where the twenty-seven-year-old Triple Crown winner Seattle Slew, a senior citizen by equine standards, makes a rousing return to active duty after spinal surgery, and stroll through Running Horse Farm, on the banks of the Rio Grande, where a nearly unmanageable colt, Devil Begone, has found peace and prosperity servicing desert mares like Patty O'Furniture.
Cheap stud, top stud, old stud, wild stud, from the Hall of Fame horse to the harem stallion with his feral herd, Stud looks at intimate acts in idyllic settings (and the billion-dollar business behind them), providing a voyeuristic glimpse of just how human the equine world can be.
Customer Reviews:
Funny,Interesting way to introduce horse racing/breeding.......2007-05-01
I don't know much about horses,I live in a place where owning one means you have the space, money, and can accomodate them to the colder climate. Needless to say, I went into this book knowing very little about them let alone what it takes to make a champion racehorse.
However, by the time I got done reading this book I was able to inform other people on horses in general and breeding them. I enjoyed reading it, Conley makes the whole business entertaining and practical for anyone to understand. I couldn't put the book down, everyday when I was finished with what had to be done life-wise I read this book. Despite this factor there are a few things in the book that one had to either know offhand or research. This is the only reason why it didn't get five stars from me.
Fun and Educational.......2006-04-24
STUD is both fun and a nice overview of the horse racing and breeding industry. One of those rare books you tend to share witty quotes from with your friends.
The writer does an excellent job of telling us about the industry, horses and people - while rarely, if ever, boring us with the "I'm special 'cause I was there and you weren't" flavor common to many horse racing industry books.
A rare find, I was sorry to reach the end.
A great book!.......2003-12-08
This book, in addition to being well written and interesting, covers the oft-overlooked foundation of the racing industry. I loved the portrayls of the horses and the owners!
good book that..........2003-11-07
reads pretty quick. a nice interlude into the breeding industry, with some cool info.
Most expensive 30 seconds in sports.......2003-09-18
The text on the back cover of this book says it all: "The most expensive thirty seconds in sports." You will need a lot of pocket change plus a very good mare before you book a cover from Storm Cat, the Thoroughbred stallion with the world's most expensive stud fee---$500,000 per mare through 2004. And there's no `payable when the foal stands and nurses' clause in his contract, either.
"Stud" is a two-year labor of love by "New Yorker" staff writer, Kevin Conley who became intrigued by the amount of money that a Thoroughbred stallion could earn after retiring from the racetrack. This is an exuberant, stylishly-written book that will tell you everything you wanted to know about what goes on in the breeding shed, but were afraid to ask.
I also learned some things I didn't know I wanted to know, like the diameter of a certain stallion's testicles---this is a book for horse-lovers who have already been through sex education class.
The author spends some time at the Keeneland sales in Lexington, Kentucky, where the `Doobie Brothers' (four sheiks from the royal family of Dubai) duke it out with the `boys' (Ireland's Coolmore Stud) for the most expensive yearlings in the sale (often Storm Cat progeny). Conley doesn't neglect the smaller breeders who make a profit by buying and breeding inexpensive mares with good blood-lines, and then selling their yearlings and two-year-olds for a profit. (There was a story in a recent "Thoroughbred Times" about a filly "who clearly did not have enough pedigree to shoot for the stars," yet was sold for $1.9 million at Barretts March sale because she showed that she could run.)
Finally, Conley details the differences between a `natural' cover (Thoroughbreds), artificial insemination (A.I.) techniques (Standardbreds), and pasture breeding (semi-feral Shetland ponies). Speaking for myself, I wouldn't exactly use the word `natural' after reading that it usually takes five or six people plus a stallion, plus a twitched and hobbled mare to complete the breeding process. Thoroughbred folks tend to be very conservative and have already rejected A.I. even though it is a safer, cheaper, and healthier method of getting mares in foal.
