Not really for dummies!.......2007-09-26
This book is required reading for many retired racing greyhound adoption groups, and with good reason: it's excellent. We read it twice before making the plunge to adopt our first greyhound (we're up to two). It's hard to translate the written word on training to actually doing it, but stick with it. I took one of Ms. Livingood's classes and found my hound and I were ahead of the game because we had been using the training tips from the book. Within three months, we passed the Canine Good Citizen test (okay, I admit it ... greyhounds are naturally good citizens).
So, what are you waiting for? Buy the book and adopt a greyhound!

The last word for the lay person on retired racers.
AFTER reading this book cover to cover (2 sittings), I adopted the most wonderful ex racing girl of 8 years. It is the best thing I have ever done. If you will always keep your dog leashed and are genuinely interested in this sweet, loving and gentle breed please get this book and bring one of these wonderful K9's into your heart and home forever. You will be so happy you did.
A great insight into owning Racing Greyhounds.......2007-06-27
I bought this book to help me decide whether I would be making the right choice in adopting a racing greyhound. I wasn't disappointed, this book did tell me a lot of the things I needed to know before making the decision final. I now know what to expect when I am ready to bring a racing greyhound into my house, my life, and my heart.
The training methods in this book may work for some, but for me, it is a little vague. I'm fairly certain that the training method detailed in this book may work for some dogs, but for many others, it could achieve little to nothing. I advise researching other training methods after reading the one detailed, and making your own mind up. No two dogs are the same, and no two owners are the same, and ultimately, the choice of training method has to be based on the traits of both dog and owner.
Well worth reading, especially for those inexperienced with dogs, and in particular greyhounds.

We adopted our first greyhound knowing so much about them. I have done days and weeks and hours on end researching them. I came across this book and bought it for my husband who's not on the computer as much as I am. And we both learned a lot from this book...it's very detailed. I would definately suggest reading this book if you have or want a greyhound

I wanted to let my readers know that The Book of the Greyhound was recently awarded the Maxwell Award as the best Single Breed Pet Guide for 2000. The Award was presented by the Dog Writers Association of America at a Ceremony and Dinner at the Southgate Tower Hotel in NYC on February 11, 2001. Great book -- if I only had one book on the subject, this would be it.
The narrative style made the book enjoyable for me to read (yet difficult to skim). The book offered me plenty of practical advice and opinion based on the author's experience.
The "dummies book" is has better illustrations, but this book wins-out for its consistent organization and easy readability. (I've also reviewed the Dummies book on Amazon in more detail: 3 of 5 stars).

This is absolutely the best book to read if you are interested in finding out more about greyhound adoption. The information is clear, accurate, and very well written. Consider this your greyhound "Bible".
Best Book on Greyhounds.......2005-06-20
Several years ago my partner and I were looking for a large sized dog to keep in an apartment. After quite a bit of research we learned about racing greyhounds. We ended up acquiring two of them. Then we got a house and had three. The original two got old and passed away and we now own our fourth and fifth. Greyhounds can be kind of addicting.
I've read pretty much every book ever written on Greyhounds and one time or another, and have searched the web extensively. When greyhound adoption first became popular Branigan's book was the only published reliable source. Since then other good books have been written, but I still think anyone interested in greyhounds should start here.
The book provides good advice on dealing with the greyhound when you first get it home and get it accustomed to living in a house. However, I'm not a big fan of crating my dogs. In our home we have actually made the dogs their own area where we sometimes confine them, although it is more of an in-house kennel complete with couch dog beds and doggy door (and windows for squirrel watching). They do actually like having some degree of confinement, and Branigan is correct in suggesting that the dog needs time to adjust and a degree of confinement. After all, they lived in a crate until they came to the house.
She also provides, as others have noted, quite a bit of good medical information. Not only is the thyroid information important, but I have spoken with every vet about the greyhound's sensitivity to anesthesia.
Every greyhound owner, or anyone thinking about owning a greyhound, should read this book.
The Best Greyhound Book Ever.......2004-10-01
I have read 15 different books on greyhound adoption and this is by far the best book of them all. If you only buy one book on greyhounds, make it this one. It is an easy to understand and FUN read full of priceless information. I love it.

This is a wonderfully complete and detailed book, written by a person who knows iggies. If you are thinking of getting an IG or have one or more of the little precious furry creatures, then this is a must book. It is not a fancy book with glossy pages full of color photos. But it does have a good deal of photos, mostly black and white, of a number of IGs. Most of the photos are of iggies being shown at a dog show, but many many others of the precious sighthounds in all types of places, doing a lot of different things.
There are chapter after chapter of interesting discussions on a wide variety of issues and events that could occur during the life of an Italian Greyhound. IG parents are a special group of individuals - you have to be to live with an iggy or two or three or more. They are like potato chips - you can't have just one.

In Australia there are few Italian Greyhounds so information was scant when I was quite decided on having one of these glorious dogs for myself. Of two books on the subject I found, this one was the source of answers to nearly all of my questions. The only few unanswered ones were those that no-one could have imagined, being solely related to the particular very individual surprises my new little chap occasionally threw at me - but we managed to work them out between us.

This book is full of great pictures! Actually, I ordered it for my husband well before Christmas and to my surprise he also bought it for me as a birthday present. We love our IG and love looking at pictures of them. They are such beautiful dogs.

I just picked this book up at my local Barnes & Noble. The photography is wonderful and if you are an Iggy parent (owner of an Italian Greyhound) you will definately appreciate the captions that go along with some of the photos. Their quirkiness comes thru brilliantly. If you are unfamiliar with the Italian Greyhound personality they are very silly little guys and gals!!
I appreciate the contrast between the Iggies and the Greyts. All around this is a greyt book that any dog lover will enjoy.

The definative sighthound book!.......2004-10-16
I have been enchanted with sighthounds since I was a young girl. I'm still in awe at how they've survived since ancient times virtually the same. This book covers sighthound breeds commonly seen at AKC dog shows: Afghan Hound; Borzoi; Irish Wolfhound; Saluki; Scottish Deerhound; ect.... But there are also fascinating histories of breeds virtually unknown in the USA, or even outside of their homelands. There is also information given on a few breeds believed to be extinct. Photos are not provided for every breed due to the breed's obscurity. The photos & line drawings are all in black & white; some are quite old so the quality isn't the best. I must add that this book is the only one I know of to date that includes information on the Silken Windhound! If you are infatuated by sighthounds as I am, I definately recommend this book to you! It's not for the casual dog person though.

I think this book is for a weekend trip to the dog track, maybe even a week in advance. That is the sort of book it was.
Good Handicapping Start.......2006-01-03
Prof. Jones steps through the basics of handicapping greyhounds in this book. His method handicaps by calculating the following variables: Effective Grade (determined by assigning scores to the WPS results over the dog's last 12 races), Current Form, Speed, Run Style (Inside, Outside preference in relation to post position) and Kennel (looks at all Kennel's WPS results...top kennels make sure their dogs are ready to race). These variables are then weighted with Effective Grade receiving about 50% of the weight. Based upon the total, bet determinations are made. This approach is good for the higher classes, but will not help you much in the lower classes or Maiden races (which he states). The chapter on betting strategies is rather short. Beyond WPS, Jones covers Trifecta Keys and Wheels and when to use those betting strategies.
Overall, this is a good intro to handicapping. The one tip I picked up about betting a favorite to show/place and the second highest rated dog to win, in certain situations, has paid for the book many times over. Good handicapping!

This book gives pretty good insight and suggestions on handicapping, and the techniques work well with the higher grades.

This book is pretty basic. The first 23 of the 32 pages are devoted to very basic material such as reading the program, the tote board, types of bets, and how to place them.
If you are going to the track for the first time with a group, and you want to bone up on the sport real-quick, this is the perfect book for you.
If you are a serious handicapper looking for an innovative theory or deep discussion on overlays and handicapping, this is not that book.

This book is a very easy read, and had the basic information that I was looking for.
One thing I was in search of that I had not found was a checklist of what to have when the greyhound comes home, and GREYHOUNDS provided that.
It also has basic nutrition, basic health care, and well-written.
Good for anyone "just" interested.

I bought this book from my local Greyhound adoption group after reading two other books. Unlike other highly reccomended books, this one is easy to read, to the point, and has lots of beautiful (and comical) color pictures. It has lots of basic information about Greyhound behavior, care, training, and fairly extensive first aid and medical info.
