3 out of 5 stars 2.5 stars - an update of a classic, but buyer beware.......2005-02-20

This is a wonderful reference. But when I got hold of this latest edition of the Rat Nervous System, I was surprised and very disappointed to find that the chapter on the amygdala was referencing figures in the 2nd edition, rather than reprinting them here. For me, it meant the trouble of getting both editions through interlibrary loan. But if I had bought this latest edition, for this price, I would have been very upset to find essential figures missing.

It depends on your needs. I'm learning to parcellate the amygdala and need access to good figures to do so. I'm sure the editors had to make difficult decisions, given the weight and humongousness of this book, but if you're thinking of getting it as a practical reference tool, preview it in a library first to make sure it hasn't cut out anything you need from earlier editions. Otherwise, what a rip off.

2 out of 5 stars Not good enough to cost this much!!!.......2004-09-18

Consider the following: if you buy four copies of this book you will have spent ONE THOUSAND DOLLARS. It better be high quality: great editing, beatiful figures, great writing, great references.

Unfortunately, this book does not merit the ridiculous price tag. For one, they need to hire a good copy editor. The opening line of the preface is, "The study of the structure of the nervous is a key to understand its function." This is indiciative of a generally choppy, rushed, and infelicitious writing style that obviously resulted from lack of a good editor.

Some of the figures are great, but figures are inconsistent from chapter to chapter. Some look like they were made in Power Point in 4 minutes, some even look like they were made in the 1970s by photographing a photograph that had labels on it! You'd think, at $250 a pop, the publisher would have hired some professional scientific illustrators.

The book is indeed comprehensive, though, and each chapter has good reference lists. Go to your library and photocopy what you need. Maybe it is because I am a graduate student with no money, but I am insulted and disappointed that the publisher wants so much for such a sub-par book.

5 out of 5 stars Most comprehensive book I know.......2001-08-07

The organization of this book, each structure having its own chapter, makes it easy to find information about any brain area. Authorities of each field contributed an introduction to the structure and a description of the morphology and activity of the cells, but then further elaborated on substructures.

It is heavy and expensive, but it is a must-have for people who need a reference book that has reviews on all areas of the rat brain.

4 out of 5 stars Great book!.......2007-09-25

I felt this book was very helpful in helping me decide on the Rat Terrier breed. It also helped me get prepare for the puppy and gave me ideas for training the puppy.

5 out of 5 stars So far, this is the best book out there to learn about Rat Terriers.......2007-04-20

As a breeder, I own all of the available books, and this is by far the best book for new owners of Rat Terriers. Definitely worth the price it sells for at Amazon.

5 out of 5 stars Everything you need to know about raising Rat Terriers.......2006-10-16

This book covers everything from training to raising and caring for your Rat Terrier. Well written. Is a book for anyone interested in Rat Terriers. Even goes into detail about the types of toys they like to play with.

5 out of 5 stars Buy this book!.......2005-09-15

I bought both this book and the Linda Hibbard book. I could have just purchased this one because I think it is the best of the two. It covers everything! A very comprehensive book for me.I am an experienced mother of 4 kids, but I have never had a dog before,so I needed to know everything! I re-read parts of it all the time to help me be a good mommy to my rat terrier puppy. It has everything from the History of the rat terrier to training and behavior and vaccinations and everyday care. The training section has been particularly helpful.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for people interested in the breed.......2005-08-17

I found this book to be very helpful and nicely detailed. I particularly liked the many good quality photos. Inside the front cover is a two-page picture, with the physical characteristics pointed out and described as from the UKC's breed standard. The standard is also explained in detail in one of the chapters, and in the "Characteristics" chapter it has a good description of the personality traits of Rat Terriers. In the sections about puppies, everyday care, general health care, and senior dogs there is a lot of general information that could be applied to most breeds, but this is common in breed books. The "Health Care of Your Rat Terrier" section has good information about health issues more likely to occur in Rat Terriers, and the "Behavior of Your Rat Terrier" chapter has helpful info about expected behavior and how to deal with behavioral problems that may occur.
Overall, I found this book to be well-written, helpful, and enjoyable to read, and I would recommend it to anyone interested in learning more about Rat Terriers.

There's something very strange about the rats living under the rosebush at the Fitzgibbon farm. But Mrs. Frisby, a widowed mouse with a sick child, is in dire straits and must turn to these exceptional creatures for assistance. Soon she finds herself flying on the back of a crow, slipping sleeping powder into a ferocious cat's dinner dish, and helping 108 brilliant, laboratory-enhanced rats escape to a utopian civilization of their own design, no longer to live "on the edge of somebody else's, like fleas on a dog's back."

This unusual novel, winner of the Newbery Medal (among a host of other accolades) snags the reader on page one and reels in steadily all the way through to the exhilarating conclusion. Robert O'Brien has created a small but complete world in which a mother's concern for her son overpowers her fear of all her natural enemies and allows her to make some extraordinary discoveries along the way. O'Brien's incredible tale, along with Zena Bernstein's appealing ink drawings, ensures that readers will never again look at alley rats and field mice in the same way. (Ages 9 to 12) --Emilie Coulter

5 out of 5 stars Rats are better than you think!.......2007-10-06

This is such a wonderful book! We read it to our children when they were little, and they loved it. Now that we are retired and reading to each other at night, we decided that was one book we needed to revisit. Needless to say, we're glad we did. We loved it just as much the second time around and highly recommend it to children and parents!

5 out of 5 stars Spectacular and timeless.......2007-09-10

The Rats of NIMH is a spectacular and timeless story for all ages. Re-reading it at the age of 25, after at least 12 years away, it was better than ever. O'Brien's prose is masterly, and there's not a hint of anything unneeded. One of my favorite books, Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH is a book for everyone.

5 out of 5 stars Rats that Outsmart People.......2007-08-02

"Super Intelligent Rats Escape NIMH Laboratory" could have been the news bulletin. It wouldn't have been disclosed, of course, that the LABORATORY rats had outsmarted their imprisoner. And though they come to live in luxury under a country rosebush, they are not entirely free. Should they ever leave evidence about of their intelligent behavior, the laboratory is sure to hear of it.

To Mrs. Frisby, a widowed FIELD mouse, only these book-reading, machine-using rats can help her out of a desperate situation. But as NIMH closes in on them, it is Mrs. Frisby who has a chance to help the rats.

[Fantasy suitable for intermediate-junior high grades.]

4 out of 5 stars Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH .......2007-06-01

Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH is a good book. I enjoyed reading it. I would recommend this book to anyone. Mrs. Frisby's son is sick, and something is coming up and it is not that good...if he is sick. There are four children, Teresa, the oldest, Martin the next but the biggest of the four, and Cynthia the youngest and Timothy. THe farmer is why Mrs. Frisby and her family have to move, becasue when the frost melts the famer will plow. Jeremy helped Mrs. Frisby by bringing he to the owl, which can help because he has been there longer than anyone can remember, and so the owl helped. So they figured out the moving problems with Timothy.

4 out of 5 stars Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of Nimh.......2007-06-01

I enjoyed reading Mrs.,Frisby and the Rats of Nimh. This book was funny, and very interesting. it was about a mouse family, the Frisbys', who are taken care of by their mother, Mrs.Frisby. She is very terrified about moving day this year, because her son, Timothy is very sick, to sick to move. She struggles along the way, to find somewhere and someway to move before the plow comes, and destroys their house. Along the way, she meets many new friends, and she discovers that there is someone who can help: the Rats of Nimh. She becomes friends with the rats of Nimh, and does so many things, and goes through a lot of trouble, to save her son, Timothy. It is interesting to hear all of the things that animals have to say, and that rats can make a home out of a rosebush. I thought it was a good book, and I give it four stars.

Yoshi is young, fine, and larcenous. She lives her life playing on men's hearts as well as their pockets. She learns the hard way that all that glitters isn't gold. Billy, a former high school basketball star, is at the end of her rope with the opposite sex. To her, all men are dogs, so she secretly seeks comfort in the arms of women, until she meets a man who makes her reevaluate her feelings. Reese is an around-the-way chick, trying to keep up with the Joneses. There's a revolving door on her bedroom as she tries to find the love she always felt was missing. Her promiscuity leaves her pregnant from a one-night stand and Reese is faced with the task of breaking an age-old cycle, passed down from mother to daughter in her family, and standing on her own. Rhonda is twenty-something with three kids, by three men, and riding the system all the way to the bank. To her, work is a dirty word; between the multiple checks she gets from the government, and the games she plays with men, she's living the life of a ghetto superstar. The game soon turns ugly when one of her "sponsors" snaps and decides to get some payback.
Harlem has never seen four friends as scandalous as these. The neighborhood will never be the same again.

5 out of 5 stars A Rare Find.......2007-09-08

So simple, yet not. This lovely story presents a one of a kind opportunity to share many important topics with a child in an way that he/she can be easily relate. There are so many themes and underlying nuances. What a wonderful way to explore the fragile nature of human insecurities and prejudices - this book should be on every 5th grade teacher's reading list. I can't wait to share it with my niece Allison.

This book is lovely and deeper then one would think for such a small book. I find that I would like to know more about their relationship and wished that this sweet tale would continue...

5 out of 5 stars friends.......2007-05-14

I read Walter as soon as it arrived and loved it. It is a beautifully written account of a growing friendship between two lonely individuals...great lesson here. I can't wait for my grandchildren to read it.

5 out of 5 stars A story about making friends even if you're scared to do so........2007-03-29

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The drawings were warmly detailed and delicate. I felt the story so heartwarming. It explains how Walter and Miss Pomeroy, who were both living lonely existences for different reasons, took the 'risk' of putting themselves in each other's lives in hopes of making that wonderful connection we call friendship.

The exchange of notes was sweet - and the first note back from Miss Pomeroy "i know" actually gave me goosebumps.

Towards the end of the book there is a drawing of Walter and Miss Pomeroy together. It was so poignant is made me cry. I highly recommend this sweet story. I would think it would be especially helpful to a child who is introverted and afraid to make new friends.

    Book Description

For neuroscientists, particularly those studying neuroanatomy, neurophysiology, and molecular biology, a detailed atlas of the rat brain is essential for any laboratory. This updated edition of Brain Maps: Structure of the Rat Brain provides atlas maps aligned in 3-dimensional space and created using color photomicrographs of histological sections based on a single rat brain. Where other atlases use multiple brains as models, the use of a single brain allows for true 3-D reconstruction. The atlas employs color coding of the major parts of the brain and extends this coding system to the atlas levels, flatmaps, and nomenclature tables for easier reference. With systematic nomenclature tables, references to the primary research literature for all of the structures, coverage of the neuroanatomical methods and mapping, and an accompanying CD-ROM of all of the atlas maps, this is a reference every laboratory should have on-hand.

    * Provides systematic treatment of the anatomy of the rat brain, based on a single brain model
    * Updated to reflect new data about brain regionalization
    * Includes CD-ROM with all of the brain maps

4 out of 5 stars Lessons from the past.......2007-06-02

Even the Rat Was White is a detailed account of racial issues throughout the history of psychology that are often glazed over or left out of many psychology textbooks. In the second edition of his book, Robert Guthrie discusses psychology's role in the racial discrimination of African Americans and other minorities. He also describes the struggles many of these individuals faced in order to achieve careers in psychology. Guthrie highlights the successful work of those African Americans who were able to push through all the barriers placed along their way within the field. Much of the information provided in this book cannot be found in general history of psychology textbooks. It is important for the future of psychology that those currently involved be aware of the transgressions of past psychologists who may have been caught up in the spirit of the times. We need to be able to step away from our work and examine our beliefs objectively, to ensure that we are not being persuaded by biases that may be detrimental to those we think we are trying to help. Guthrie provides a cutthroat picture of the narrow-minded, self-preserving view psychology has had in the past. We must move beyond these discriminating beliefs and accept a contemporary, multicultural perspective of psychology.

    5 out of 5 stars Jennifer Wolf's review of Guthrie's Classic.......2007-06-01

Robert Guthrie's Even the Rat Was White: A Historical View of Psychology, 2nd Edition is an insightful and important text for the field of psychology. He utilizes this text as a means to draw attention to the collection of historical materials related to racial stereotypes toward African Americans in the field of science and the struggle African Americans faced in education and employment in psychology. He also emphasizes the importance of how the spirit of the time, or Zeitgeist, can be the guiding influence for research and has a large impact on what people believe is important. Although the text highlights the grim aspects of psychology's history, it brings to focus the contributions of African Americans in psychology and illustrates the importance of learning from the mistakes made in the past and using those findings to the betterment of science. Although Guthrie's voice is cynical in nature, his text provides a taste of psychology's history that goes unheard otherwise.

4 out of 5 stars Even the Rat Was White.......2007-05-30

In an informative and objective style, Guthrie recounts the history of African Americans and other minorities in the realm of psychology and eloquently describes the struggle that African American psychologists and students endured to bring truth and equality to the surface. He begins with a detailed historical account of African Americans throughout the centuries and their experiences with anthropology, psychology, and society. To follow, are topics such as intelligence testing, race and psychology, education, and African Americans in psychology.
The study of differences was propagated by the emergence of psychology in the late 1800s. Not to be left out of the zeitgeist, the focus on identifying racial differences only grew stronger with the new techniques of systematic experimentation and observation. This surge led to the development of elaborate racial classification systems, and studies on the perceived physiological and anatomical differences between races.
Despite the immense obstacles put in place and the atrocities inflicted on African Americans throughout the history of the US and specifically in academia, the field of psychology is slowly moving. As we study both similarities and differences between groups and individuals at present, we can hopefully move past mere skin color and work collaboratively to foster learning about all people. Authors such as Guthrie will help to fuel this paradigm shift and lead us into a new psychology, marked by the combinations of science and equality.

3 out of 5 stars Racial bias in the field of psychology.......2007-05-29

In Even the Rat Was White, Guthrie exposes racial bias in the history of psychology. Although such prejudice can be traced back to ancient times, a resurgence in the late 19th century was reflected in the emerging field of psychology where it also found legitimacy via this new "science." Guthrie's book would have been better served had he provided a broader view of the cultural context. Also, the scope of Guthrie's account of the history of psychology only extended to areas that affected racial issues, excluding other areas of study, which gave the appearance that racial differences were the main or only area of investigation within the field. Overall, Guthrie's book provided a unique perspective on the history of psychology and was enlightening in regard to the blatant racial bias that affected the topics which we study, the tools that we have used, and the profession as a whole. Racial bias in form of eugenics movement and intelligence testing is most frightening, because these problems haunt us from our not so distant past and because they persist to some degree today, and will likely reemerge in the future. Although we have overcome some of the blatant bias in the field of psychology, I wonder if this is just a reflection of our "enlightened" times, and whether some of the bias is now more insidious. Perhaps we are unaware of the current zeitgeist and will look back upon this time in history with the same embarrassment for our ignorance of important issues.

    4 out of 5 stars What's past is prologue.......2007-05-29

Even the Rat was White offers the modern psychologist an alternative to current texts on the history of psychology by systematically chronicling the relationship between the field of psychology, the intellectual and cultural climate of the era, and racial and ethnic disparities. Guthrie painstakingly outlines how the historical character of the times facilitated and perpetuated psychological research and practices and how, in turn, psychology influenced past and existing perceptions of individual differences and racial and ethnic discrepancies. For instance, The first chapter of the book on the measurement of the physical attributes of different races and the instruments designed to calculate them entices the reader to continue to explore Guthrie's argument by discussing the absurd techniques employed by anthropologists to prove the inferiority of minority races under the guise of scientific research and the impact this research had on the field of psychology. Additionally, the conclusion of the second section of book highlights the fundamental difference between Guthrie's history of psychology and other standard texts in use by examining the major contributions of Black psychologists that continue to be overlooked by the field and texts depicting the history of psychology. From the study of physical characteristics that began an era in psychology fixated on individual differences instead of human commonalities to the successful rise of Black psychologists despite an overwhelmingly oppressive socio-cultural view of Black Americans, Even the Rat was White challenges the Eurocentric psychology in America and instills in the reader an intense desire to continue to confront our past and counteract racial and ethnic discrepancies in modern psychological research and practice. Even the Rat was White opens the eyes of the reader to the racially biased research and discriminatory practices and will, hopefully, aid current psychologists in learning from past mistakes so that will not be repeated in the future.

This is an easy way to spare a living subject's life. Being able to "isolate Sniffy" and speed up time during a programed experiment is handy. However, if you've ever experienced working with a real rat, Sniffy may leave you disappointed. It feels like a computer generated set of shaping expectations -because that's what it is. I certainly would have never invested in this product if it hadn't been required for class.

Este programa es lo mejor para ensenar a una rata y asi no estar molestanto a las ratas verdaderas. Es una herraminta fabulosa para ensenar.

Moose County journalist and philanthropist James Qwilleran, better known to fans of Lilian Jackson Braun's evergreen series of feline-inspired thrillers as the owner of a couple of remarkably prescient Siamese cats named Koko and Yum Yum, is comfortably ensconced in his winter residence in Pickax at the beginning of The Cat Who Smelled a Rat. But he and the other citizens start hoping for snow when a series of arson fires threaten their safety as well as the historically significant shafthouses that sit atop the long-closed mine sites scattered throughout the county.

Qwilleran and his pets take quite a while to connect the fires with the death of a local builder in a seemingly unrelated accident. But his leisurely jaunt to the conclusion of this lightly plotted adventure leaves plenty of room for the author to do what she does best, which is sketching the picaresque characters who people Pickax and dwelling on the small-town charms of a place where everybody knows everything about everybody. The cats are quicker to solve a crime than the local constabulary. Only Koko could find the clues hidden in an antique pitcher and an old-fashioned glove box, and only a cat lover could consider this a mystery or even a romance. There's no suspense, very little drama, hardly any blood, and not even a hint of sex between Qwilleran and his lady. But Braun's fans are legion, so we know she must be doing something right. --Jane Adams

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite Cozy Mystery Series!.......2006-09-15

In the 23rd book in the Cat Who mystery series, James Qwilleran aka "Qwill", has settled into his winter condo in Pickaxe City (400 miles north of everywhere) and is awaiting "the big one", or first large snowfall of the season. He has moved his two beautiful Siamese cats (KoKo and Yum Yum) into the condo, and starts the book with some redecorating to make his place more comfortable.

The county is in a drought, and everyone is counting on the first big blizzard of the season to stop the threat of forest fires in the area. The citizens form a patrol to watch for the fires that can sometimes smolder undetected in the old shaft houses for years. Everything is going well until one of the members of the volunteer patrols is shot after catching an arsonist at work trying to destroy one of the historic shaft houses. Another murder occurs, this time of a prominent local businessman, Qwill begins to suspect that the two cases are somehow strangely connected. He starts to poke around, and cracks the case with the help of his two irrepressible felines, KoKo and Yum Yum.

This is my favorite cozy mystery series! I had read all of the books in the past, and wanted to read them again for a second time. This time around, I have chosen to listen to them on CD, as I love the voice of George Guidall. This is probably one of my favorite installments in the series, even though I love them all. The characters and the setting of the small towns in Moose County are what keep drawing many readers back...so if you are looking for a hardcore thriller, this would not be the series for you. However, if you are a fan of small town cozies, give this series a try. You might just find that you have become an avid "Cat Who" fan before the book is even finished.

This is a great series by my favorite author!

The first book in the series is called "The Cat who Could Read Backwards". Enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars go out on a good note.......2006-06-22

I've just reread "The Cat Who Smelled a Rat." In it, Jim Qwilleran is still in fine mettle. This mystery, No. 23 in the "Cat Who" series, is the last one most fans will enjoy. In this book, Qwill still remembers small details from previous novels. He's still interested in the mysteries around him, and he does some active snooping around. He's still a bit of the Lothario despite himself. And he still has faith in Koko's awesome powers.

Starting with the next book, the mystery gets solved almost by accident. Qwill becomes a parody of himself, and the novels start to get worse and worse. Eventually, the books begin to get facts wrong and characters begin to act, well, out of character or just inexplicably drop out of sight. (The latter must be hard to do in a small town 400 miles north of anywhere.) Whether Lilian Jackson Braun, now approaching 90, has lost her touch, or whether they're being ghost-written, I leave to you to judge. But the books become just dreadful.

I recommend that readers go out on a high note and stop after No. 23. It's been a good run.

5 out of 5 stars The Cat Who Smelled a Rat.......2005-10-26

Another delightful mystery by Lilian Jackson Braun...Qwilleran is able to solve the mystery with the help of Koko, his Siamese cat. A famous rare bookstore located in Pick Ax unexpectedly burns to the ground and the owner is killed. Although he always joked about it, the owner leaves the bookstore to Qwilleran in his will. Qwilleran is thoroughly surprised and plans to build a memorial to him in the town library. Throughout the story, Qwilleran cannot believe that the fire was an accident. Koko confirms his suspicions by leaving a series of cat-like clues. Koko eventually leads him to the suspect after he smells-out the biggest clue.

3 out of 5 stars Not Enough Mystery.......2005-05-11

I picked up this book expecting mopre mystery than I got. The story starts of with Qwilleran going around town collecting gossip. He has a column in the towns newspaper. This gossip did not really intrest me, especially since it took up nearly half of the book! The mystery is the historical minesites around the town being set ablaze. Originally it was thought to be the extreme heat, but at about the halfway point the murder occurs.

A volunteer for the Citizens Fire Watch is murdered, and he notices someone setting the mines ablaze before he dies. After this, Qwilleran goes clue hunting, but it seems to we to be just more gossip.

However, one of the worst things I dislike about this book is the end. In the last 10 to 15 pages there is a rush of clues and the mystery finally solved. I think this rush of clues should have been spread out more throughout the book.

The cats were a nice touch to the story. They added some humor with their cat tantrums, and how seriously Qwilleran takes them.

So, I would recommend this book to anyone who likes or doesn't mind gossip and doesn't mind if the mystery is pretty, light.
