Was a great book in its time........2007-09-20
There is no question that the author was a world class dog trainer. It is just as obvious that the book was written decades ago when beating the dog was an acceptable form of discipline. We are a little more sophisticated than that today.
The training techniques and protocols are timeless and I highly recommend them. I used them to train my Lab and the results have been great. But I don't beat him!
Great Book.......2007-07-16
This book is awesome, although it was writen a long time ago it is a great guide on how to go about training a retriever for waterfowling. I read this book after reading "Game Dog" by the same author and they are great complements to one another. Game Dog is more structured by the pups age, but "Water Dog" gives more detail on some of the instruction and also talks alittle more about disipline and what to do if the dog refuses your commands.
Old but still correct.......2007-06-08
Mr. Wolters was really the first to strongly urge that puppies should start being trained at a very early age. What stands out about this old book is the emphasis on common sense. Short training lessons for puppies and consistency in how the owner trains and what he/she expects from the dog. I've used this book several times in the past and think it's just as good now as it was in the early '60's.
waterdog book.......2007-02-12
had this book along time ago lost it just got my three boys a white lab from santa it is only 12 weeks old already doing commands on a whistle
classic dog training.......2007-01-03
This book is easy to read and contains a ton of great information about dog training. Be forewarned, that if you plan on using a training collar you should get a book that covers those basics as well since this book was written before that training tool became available.
This is one of his later books and as such contains improvements in technique and his writing style. This is _the book_ if you're training a retriever. His methods for teaching a dog to do blind retrieves are a little logistically difficult and I'd suggest not using them unless you have the resources nearby.

Book Description
Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03
Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.
Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19
Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.
Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09
There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.
For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.
Very Interesting.......2007-03-07
It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.
History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10
Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.
I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.
Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.
Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.
I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.
This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.
Book Description
The Portuguese Water Dog's storybook return from the brink of extinction is faithfully documented in this first new edition of the breed's bible. There is also a wealth of guidance on care, puppies, showing, performance events and more -- and, oh those photos.
Customer Reviews:
A Classic!.......2006-12-04
Kitty's book is THE reference book on the PWD. It has an in-depth history of the breed, a discussion of the temperament of the average PWD, pedigree information, etc. Although it has some tips on training, that is NOT the purpose of this book. There are plenty of training books out there!
I disagree with the people who say this is just for people who show. I got my copy long before I ever showed a PWD. It is, however, a more in-depth study of the breed. For those who just want tips on how to raise a puppy, I recommend Verne Foster's book. For those who want to understand the breed and the background of their dog, get Kitty's book. I recommend getting both!
There is an earlier version of this book which Kitty wrote with Deyanne Miller (who made the first successful introduction of the PWD to the United States & worked hard to rescue the breed). You do not need that edition unless you want to see photos of some of the early PWDs that are omitted in the revised edition.
Specialised.......2005-10-11
If you're someone who wants to show a Portie in the US, this is the book for you, and you'll probably find it an invaluable resource.
If, however, you're like me and are not in the US, and do not have any desire to show, the book is of limited use. Not a complete waste of time, as there are precious few books out there on the breed, but the book seems very targeted, which is a shame.
Good book to have, but..........2003-08-04
lots of show-dog filler. If you have your PWD as a regular, fun pet & not as a showdog, there are many pages in this book you will just be skimming over.
Only if you want to Show.......2000-05-31
This book is an excellent reference book to anyone who wants to learn about the history of the PWD and how to show and breed. I adopted a PWD from a pound and know nothing of the breed before we got Cheech. I am glad this book was there to give my a general backround and some tips, however, I still would like to know more.
Essential for PWD owners (or those who would like to be).......1999-12-15
A great book! It's the only one I've ever seen, but it's fantastic, with invaluable health and training tips, as well as history. And it is worth the price if only for the photos, but there's so much more. My PWD is a total joy for our whole family - I don't want the breed to become too popular and suffer for it, but I wish I had a dozen of these dogs! And they don't bother people w/allergies, they are wonderful. This book will be very helpful for owners and would-be owners.
Book Description
There's an old saying: "If you want a friend in Washington, get a dog." A few years ago, Senator Ted Kennedy decided to do just that. Now his beloved Portuguese Water Dog Champion Amigo's Seventh Wave (nicknamed Splash) is the most famous canine on Capitol Hill. Here we follow Senator Kennedy and Splash through a busy day in D.C., from press conferences to meetings with school groups to committee discussions to a floor vote. The result is an exciting, behind-the-scenes look at the life of one of the most energetic figures in American politics -- and, of course, his equally famous owner.

for the dogs ?.......2007-05-12
Probably a more interesting read for the young as to how a senator and his dog cope in D.C. While the pics helped paint the picture, I have to wonder just why Senator Kennedy lent his name to this project, which could have been done by any senator. Probably only his name warranted the effort here.
My Senator and Me: Dog's Eye View of Washingfton,D.C........2007-03-14
Very well written and illustrated. Great basics about life in D.C.and the workings of our government. I own two PWD's (the dog in the story) and the description of their behavoir is right on!
I can't believe how long it's been since...........2007-02-08
...someone's pointed out that Ted Kennedy's dog's name is...Splash.
Is the esteemed senator so insulated from reality (and his own past) that he thought it would be a good idea to produce a book that told the whole world that he owns a dog named...Splash?
The only way it could be worse would be if the dog's name had been Mary Jo.
"If You Want a Friend in Washington, Get a Dog".......2006-11-26
Senator Kennedy intended this book to give children a better understanding of public service and of how government works. The prose is appealing for three main features: 1) The short, clearly written sentences, 2), the combination of information and humor, and 3), The engaging personality of the narrator. The latter is not Teddy Kennedy, but his dog, a floppy-eared, curly-haired Portuguese Water Dog named "Splash, who positively overflows with personality.
Kennedy presents the educational aspects as information for Splash, a Virginia-raised newcomer to Washington D.C. We see beautiful ink and watercolor pictures of the White House, the Kennedy Center ("named for my Senator's brother"), the Lincoln Memorial ("the sixteenth President, who led our country during the Civil War"), a glistening full page showing the Washington Monument, and the Capitol. The workings of D.C. are fascinating, even for adult readers. "Splashie" tells us that when he and the Senator enter the Russell Senate Office Building, "everyone has to walk through the metal detector--even me!" In addition, how many children or adults know that there's an underground train (Splash loves it, and Senator Kennedy enjoys Splash's excitement!) that travels from the Senate Office Building to the Capital in less than 30 seconds? There's a gorgeous 2-page spread showing Kennedy's office. Ship models, framed mementoes, and a subdued outline of Kennedy by his desk take a back seat to Splash playing with a ball and a stuffed animal. This is symbolic of the sensibilities of the whole book; it's about Splash and his D.C. exploits, not about Senator Kennedy. After all, (wink, wink), Splash wrote the book!
Of course, being a Senatorial dog, Splash can't help but hear some behind the scenes politics as well. The writing falters at one point, because of some purple prose, which seems a little far-FETCHed to all but the youngest audience.
"'The Senate has voted to approve our education bill!' one staff member says. `Our bill will make schools safer, let them hire more teachers, and even put a computer in every classroom!' But the House of Representatives passed a different education bill,' says another staff member. `This is a problem.' `Well, there's no time to lose,' says the Senator. `We need to meet with members of the House immediately and work out the difference between the two bills.' (OK, here it comes) The school children are counting on us!"
One half expects a cut to "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington," with a horde of clean cut, newspaper-flinging schoolchildren from "Willit Crick" supporting Kennedy's no-brainer save-the -schools legislation. However, no, Kennedy delivers a statement on the Capitol steps ("We must pass this bill so the children of our country get the education they deserve"), and Splash, sits "very quietly" at his side, knowing that his good behavior will ensure his future attendance at these events. Afterwards, things take a lighter turn, as members of the media and others pet Splash, Kennedy plays fetch with Splash (who makes a dazzling leaping catch of a tennis ball) and they return to the Capitol--with another masterful picture of the Capitol rotunda by Caldecott winner David Scott.
Instead of closing the book here, Kennedy risks that his toddler to elementary school audience will not be bored by the conference committee session. Even Splash knows the potential: "I know a meeting like this could go on for hours. It's actually surprisingly candid, as each committee member gives the expected paean on children's education, but then emphatically states that his or her version is the best. Kennedy looks frustrated with the talking heads around him, and Splash observes that the speakers are "getting more and more upset, and their voices are getting louder and louder and louder." Now it's Splash's turn for some shrewd negotiation to cut through the impasse, so he does something no one, no matter what their experience or authority can do better"
"WOOF! WOOF!"
The room silences at Splash's barking, then erupts into laughter--setting a more cooperative tone that gets the revised bill out of committee, to a vote by the full Senate and House, and, if passed, the possibility that the President will sign it into law. The maneuvering of the plot--as well as the bill--through the potentially dry committee scene pays off with this delightful and witty plot turn. OF course, Splash doesn't like the rule "NO dogs allowed on the Senate Floor," as he says, "I've seen plenty of Senators, and they don't behave any better than I do." (I believe Splash has seen at least one Vice President, too.)
One of the early spreads shows a long line of glad-handers flashing enormous, fakey smiles at Kennedy, some of whom are probably not "true and loyal friends." Splash observes, "There is an old saying:" "If you want a friend in Washington, get a dog." This book shows that Splash is not just a loyal friend, he's a trusted support, a playmate, a keen observer of the politics and accomplishments of D.C. Kennedy strikes a superb balance between the idealistic and the jaded, the educational and the humorous, the public image and the personal relationship. Current partisan politics are mentioned only as a backdrop for the workings of the Senate and the House, and children learn not only the oft-repeated steps of how a bill becomes a law (this list one of three afterwards in the book; the other two are brief biographies of Kennedy and Splash), but how negotiations that make it possible. They're also shown that just about everyone can benefit from dog like a "Splash"; they can even write Splash himself at splash@tedkennedy.com. With Ted Kennedy's mostly light touch, and David Small superb illustrations-- light, airy, and sometimes inspirational--this is more than just another "celebrity" book, it's a masterful effort that achieves and surpasses its goal of enjoyable education. Excllent for the school, library or home.
Of All The Senators..........2006-11-22
Of all the Senators to be put up as role models in the children's book aisle, Senator Kennedy is NOT the Senator to represent this esteemed, and important political office.
Cute dogs aside, no self-respecting parent would permit their child to read this book for fear they would come away with a belief Senator Kennedy is a personality they should aspire to follow.
The idea of the book is great, but shame on Senator Kennedy for this attention grabbing self serving book aimed at indoctrinating children.

When the impish blonde heroine of Mary Casanova's One-Dog Canoe sets out for a paddle around the lake, she intends to have just one animal along for the ride: her dog. The two canoe companionably for a time, gliding past pine trees, ducks, fish, and frogs. Then a beaver on the bank asks if he can join them. The girl protests politely--"It's a one-dog canoe"--but the beaver scrambles in anyway and finds a seat comfortably near the picnic basket. The girl's credibility is lost. Soon the three are joined by a loon, a wolf, a bear, and a moose, and finally a frog hoping for a dry ride.
Casanova's rhythmic rhymes and onomatopoeic sound effects ("Swoosh-a-bang flop!" as the canoe finally capsizes) add charm to the familiar story pattern, and the lengthening refrain "It's a one-moose, one-bear, one-wolf, one-loon, one-beaver, one-dog canoe!" will be fun for children to chant. Ard Hoyt's winning pencil and watercolor illustrations bring all the characters to life. The look of satisfaction on the beaver's face when he first sits down and the girl's growing indignation and alarm are especially giggle-worthy. (Ages 4 to 8) --Jennifer Lindsay
Book Description
Sometimes – the more the merrier
I set off one morning in my little red canoe.
My dog wagged his tail.
“Can I come, too?”
“You bet,” I said.
“A trip for two – just me and you.”
But when “with a slap and a swim” Beaver scrambles in, and then “with a ‘woo-hooo!’ – flap!” Loon lands in the young canoeist’s lap, it’s clear that this will be no ordinary canoe trip.
A bouncy rhyming text and exuberant pictures full of funny, escalating antics will have young readers laughing out loud – for just when it seems the canoe can’t hold anyone else, frog jumps in!

One-Dog Canoe is wonderful!.......2007-07-09
I bought One-Dog Canoe to read to my two year old granddaughter. It was a HUGE hit with the whole family!! I must have read it to her at least 10 times over the course of one weekend. My son (her father) loved it too - we Minnesotans love a good canoe story!! Mary Casanova is such a good author!
An Instant Hit!.......2007-06-26
I purchased this book on a recommendation from a fellow volunteer in a children's literacy group. What a fabulous book! I read it to classes of both Kindergarteners and 2nd graders alike, and every child (no exaggeration) loved it. I also bought a copy for my niece when she was 3, and she soon had it memorized - the ryming is fantastic, and not at all annoying. I especially enjoyed the illustration details - there are many nuances that children ill find each time they read the book.
Hands down one of my favorites.
Awesome book.......2005-10-24
I bought this book for my 3 kids, ages 7, 5 and 3, and we really enjoyed it. I heard about the author in my Literature Course, and wanted to read a book from her. I loved the drawings and the rhyming, which made a perfect book for a group reading. My kids enjoyed it too, specially with all those animals in the story.
Great book.......2005-08-22
This is a wonderful book. It is very unique, featuring animals of the Northwoods such as moose and bear. It is a joy to read with an memorable cadence. Your child will enjoy it.
A darling little story.......2003-07-31
This is such a fun little story. My three year old twin girls just love it. I will read it to them many times a day, and they always bust into laughter. They think all the animals are so funny when they want to take a ride in the One-dog Canoe. Great story for all children.
Book Description
In the funniest dog cartoon book ever, beloved New Yorker cartoonist Leo Cullum pokes gentle fun at the foibles and eccentricities of cavorting canines and their human owners. Or is it the dogs who are in charge?
As his enchanted fans well know, Cullum's dogs are an eclectic and enterprising lot. They are lawyers and doctors and businessmen, and more than a few like to sit in bars and debate the predicaments of life. Whether they portray a confounded dog therapy patient searching for the reason he is barking, or an exasperated dog humoring his human owner's need to keep throwing a stick for him to fetch, the 125 laugh-out-loud cartoons in this book tell us almost as much about people as they do about dogs.

If you're a dog owner...........2007-07-27
Already a New Yorker cartoon fan, I was excited to find this book in my vet's waiting room and had to get a copy for my husband. It's too funny. The facial expressions alone are worth the price.
If you love dogs..........2007-01-31
...you'll love this book. Just flippin' hilarious. A great gift, too.
For Chloe, My German Shepard.......2006-02-17
As xpected, this was (is) great. It has given me LOL & tears.
Tickle your funny bone.......2005-09-24
Smart, crisp cartoons - many followed by a chuckle or a good belly laugh. My older son and I spent a good part of a rainy afternoon laughing together. As a woman who lives with four dogs, Cullum really hit the spot on many of the witty quips.

Laugh-OUT-LOUD Funny!.......2004-11-09
Whether you are a fan of New Yorker cartoons or not, this collection should touch your funny bone. I will only say this: I kept this book at my bedside, allowing myself only three or four cartoons a night, and those cartoons always left me laughing out loud and feeling ready for a good night's sleep.
Oh, did I mention that I'm not one who normally laughs out loud?
Enjoy!

Book Description
In Wet Pets and Other Watery Tales human guardians relate how their family pets enjoy and meet challenges presented by the water, whether it\'s scrabbling aboard a boat in an ocean port or hitting the shower in a suburban home. From Cato "with hair slicked back, ears laid flat against his little skull, cat-paddling like crazy" for a nearby island, to Buster, his backside firmly planted in a child\'s car seat and Chester, obeying a very special command from the skipper, the cats, dogs-and even ducks- depicted in this book should warm the heart of any animal lover.

When the author discovers suspicious lumps on his 11-year-old golden retriever Nellie, rather than wait for a biopsy and the possibility of further decline, he decides it's time for one last great road trip. "I knew, lying next to her, that I was frightened for myself at least as much as for Nellie. I needed the steadiness of her demands, the consistency she brought to my life. I couldn't imagine days without her. So that night in bed I stayed close to her and whispered in her ear that she was a good girl, a Frisbee catcher, a lake swimmer." Whether or not the lumps are cancerous, the dog that saw him through a marriage and a divorce has gotten old. So they pack up the truck and make for points west. What transpires next is part elegy, part meditation on interspecies companionship, and part fishing memoir. Monninger writes lyrically about his bond with an animal and the landscape while staying true to the picaresque form in a casual manner that allows minor surprises along the way to gain cumulative power. Here he is describing the gift bestowed by a bend in the river after following Nellie's lead:
Trout rose everywhere I looked.... I could not believe my good fortune. As I stood quietly and listened, I heard the gurgle of water passing over rocks, the sound snapped to life by the quick surge of trout.... The rings of their feeding drifted above them, then disappeared in the water's pull. I remembered André Gide's line: "Fish die belly-up and rise to the surface; it's their way of falling."
Friendship, mortality, loneliness, the redemptive qualities of nature--this is the territory the author drives through with his faithful canine, a territory that will appeal to dog lovers and fly-fishers alike.
Book Description
Joseph Monninger thought the worst when Nellie, his loyal golden retriever, became ill.
Home Waters is the story of the road trip that Monninger decided to embark on with Nellie, traveling out West to revisit their favorite mountain haunts and trout streams. Expecting this to be their final excursion together, Monninger maps a course that includes the Wind River Range in Wyoming, the Bighorn River in Montana, and Henry Ford's River in Idaho.
Painting a loving portrait of his canine companion and the joys of fishing, Monninger recalls the life events that Nellie has seen him through and describes how, oblivious to her presumed health problems, Nellie contentedly watches bison at Yellowstone, chases a coyote, and falls head over heels for a Chesapeake retriever named Chunky. Combining the charm of John Steinbeck's
Travels with Charley with the unsentimental storytelling of
A River Runs Through It,
Home Waters is a delightful story of a beautiful friendship--one that is, in the end, renewed rather than ended.

Sad that it's out of print.......2004-07-21
What a shame that books this worthwhile have to go out of print. In its quiet, unassuming way, I found this to be a classic work of animal-lover's literature. Like at least one other reviewer, I wondered whether I could get through the entire book after reading the first paragraph, which seems to be foretelling a tragedy. But I did, and instead shared something more like a triumph. I will never give up my copy of this book. I hope the used copies available here will be enjoyed by many more people.
A charming story about a fly fisherman and his dog.......2000-12-19
"Home Waters" is a charming story about a fly fisherman and his dog. It is Monninger's memoir and tribute to his dog, Nellie, an eleven-year-old Golden Retriever, who he has recently learned has cancer. He decides to take a road trip from his home in New Hampshire to visit some of his favorite fishing spots in Wyoming, Idaho, and Montana. Monninger takes the reader along for the ride, describing the details of his fishing trips -- where he sets up, which type of bait he uses, how he adjusts his technique to the circumstances -- and how Nellie accompanies him in all he does -- how she sniffs at each stick and stone as she explores a new area, how she snuggles into his sleeping bag on cold nights, how she taught herself to dive under water after him. As he makes his way through the trip, he reminisces about earlier fishing trips and other experiences he and Nellie have shared.
I loved the tone of this book. Monninger has a pleasant, matter-of-fact way of telling a story. I especially liked how he conveyed his simple love and respect for Nellie just in the way he interacted with her and in his reports of their conversations: "I told Nellie we were done for the night. She seemed grateful." Or, "I told her she was a good dog." When Nellie encountered a harvested potato field, she gave her best shot at retrieving the hundreds of potatoes left on the ground, only to be defeated by the magnitude of the task. Monninger says, "I consoled her on the walk back to the truck, telling her we all have such days, then fed and watered her. I told her to lay down on her dog bed and she did." After he returns to his hotel: "When I unhooked Nellie's leash inside the room, she put her nose on the edge of the bed, asking permission to get up. I told her to go ahead, but not to hog the whole thing. She curled at the foot of the bed, tail to nose. I sat besider her and gave her a rub. In a little while she began to snore. I read for awhile, then turned out the light." I especially related to his dilemma when he went fishing at Yellowstone. "The hard part was explaining to Nellie it is against park regulations to take a dog into the back country.... Nellie wasn't pleased with it... and when I locked her in the back of the truck, she whined to come with me. I was firm with her and caved only enough to give her a biscuit." I've never been fly fishing, but I enjoyed Monninger's equally droll explanations of how it works, the strategy (and luck) that goes into it. I think I now understood why "the one that got away" haunts every fisherman.
Beautiful story of man, dog, life..........2000-09-28
In this memoir, author Joseph Monninger recounts a very special fly-fishing trip with his best friend, eleven-year-old Golden Retriever, Nellie. Nellie has been diagnosed with cancer and Monninger decides to let the illness run its course- but not without one last grand encounter with nature. The pair traverse the country by pickup truck- camping, fishing and otherwise enjoying nature and the company of each other. This is a great book for those who fish because there are lots of references to the techniques and joys of fly-fishing.But the touching glimpses of the bond between man and dog, and of dealing with the curves life throws at us, add memorable depth and make this wonderful story of interest to everyone, fisher-person or not.
Touching story of a man and his dog.......1999-12-02
This is a wonderful story about the relationship between a man and his dog. I've never gone fly fishing but I found the descriptions quite interesting. I felt like I was with Joe and Nellie on their adventues. Very moving! I highly recommend this book to everyone even if you don't have a dog!
An engaging recount of a man's simple but worthy pleasures........1999-09-29
Monninger uses all his senses in his prose. Unassuming details become necessary pieces of a fabulous story about a man's love for his best friend, one that can't verbally reciprocate the bond but shows an appreciation of the author through her patience and obedience. Bravo!

This is a wonderful story about a dog and his owner and his adventures. The book gave me some idea about how it is to live in another part of the country where surfing is a big part of their lives. We can't surf where we live. I loved this book and am going to recommend it to the book club I am in.

Book Description
The seafaring wonder known as the Portuguese Water Dog has made an unprecedented splash in the American dog world. An exceptional diver and swimmer, the Portuguese Water Dog excels in sports in the water and on land, a true working dog of unique ability. When not herding fish into a fisherman's net or carrying messages from boat to boat, this talented canine is home guarding his family, accompanying his owners and playing with the children. While the breed's sunny disposition and clownlike personality recommends it to a wide array of owners, the Portuguese Water Dog requires an active, well-informed and available owner in order for it to thrive and be happy.
This new Comprehensive Owner's Guide provides owners and potential owners with the necessary information about maintenance and exercise requirements, health concerns and training needs.
The author describes the PWC's characteristics and personality, presents the breed standard and offers excellent advise about puppy slection, getting started in obedience, house-training, grooming and much more.

An OK book.......2006-12-04
This is an accurate book, but is a typical PET STORE book with boilerplate sections on training, etc. It is, however, interesting to read a book on PWDs with a European viewpoint. It has some great photos of PWDs, but I wish they were identified with the name of the dog!
This book is really for a person with little experience owning any type of dog. For the new or soon-to-be owner of a PWD puppy, I recommend Vern Foster's book, for those seeking in-depth information on the breed, the classic is The New Complete Portuguese Water Dog (Howell Reference Books) by Kathryn Braund. For those interested in the European viewpoint, get Carla Molinari's book (although it is HARD to find!)
I recommend this book for those wanting general information on raising a puppy as well as information about the PWD. I also recommend it to those people who- like me- want to own EVERYTHING published about the PWD!
