Book Description
Illustrated by Jane Monroe Donovan
It may be Christmastime but on a small, forlorn farm the holiday season is best forgotten, along with painful memories of loved ones lost. Mother Nature has other plans, however, and a chance snowstorm brings together two unlikely hearts, one human and one beast, yet both yearning for comfort, companionship, and that most elusive gift of all, hope. This lustrous jewel of a story, quietly told and perfectly complemented by soft, evocative paintings, reminds even the most cynical of readers that the heart indeed can recover and go on.
Jane Monroe Donovan's parents encouraged her to follow her heart and it led to her love of sketching and painting. Her affection for animals is reflected in much of her subject matter. Jane makes her home in Pinckney, Michigan, with her husband Bruce and their two sons, Ryan and Joey. Other members of their family include their two dogs, Belle and Grizzly, a Siamese cat named Maylee, and their two horses, Ameera and Cherokee Rose.
In addition to Winter's Gift, Jane has also illustrated three other titles for Sleeping Bear Press: My Teacher Likes to Say; My Momma Likes to Say; and Sunny Numbers: A Florida Counting Book.
Customer Reviews:
A beautiful book!!.......2007-01-19
This is a wonderful book for young and old alike..a story of hope and love, and best of all, it involves a horse! The illustrations are beautiful.
Winter's Gift.......2007-01-13
This is a wonderful Christmas book for children. My kids have been enjoying it for 2 seasons and always look forward to it. I gave it to an adult friend of mine too who needed a little holiday spirit. It sends a great message.
Wonderful art and story.......2007-01-12
What attracted me to this book was the art work. The pictures are realistic and sensitive. When I see the mare walking through the snowstorm, I get cold! The story is very sweet, and the perfect sentiment for Christmas. Wonderful children's book that adults while enjoy.
A wonderful book for all ages.......2007-01-04
When I picked this book up, I thought it was a childrens book. After reading the first few pages, I realized that the story was timeless and for all ages. Wonderful illustrations. I had intended to buy it for my [...] daughter, and ended up purchasing a couple of copies.
Great story for kids.......2006-11-25
This is a very good story and, although some of the elements could be turned into a "cliche" in other hands, everything works like a charm. I read it to my three year old with some minor adaptations, and he loved it instantly. There is no sugar coating of what a great loss is like, and of what a great danger the mare is in, and therefore the characters are truly very engaging. The illustrations are good specially the snowstorm scenes.
There is drama, action and final joy, the perfect combination for an easy to tell bedtime story.
Book Description
It's December, and Amy can't help but remember the last holiday she spent with her mother. Back then, Amy was training Sundance, the feisty pony they had rescued from an auction. While Sundance had proven to be a talent in the show ring, he was still impossible to handle in the stable. Frustrated by the pony's attitude and her mother's rigorous training schedule, Amy is lacking holiday - and Heartland - spirit. But then, Sundance falls ill. As Amy watches over him, she is finally able to glimpse the vulnerable pony's true heart - and understand the precious gift she shares with her mother.

A Holiday Memory.......2005-03-23
Hi! I wanted to tell the people that haven't read this book yet that I found it kind of disapointing and boring. I think the only part I really liked was at the end when she got something. I can't tell what it was, though! I also want to say that the whole book was kind of sad. I hated the part were Sundance got colic. My horse got colic, and he was almost about to die, but he just made it! Whenever I read this, that part makes me cry. I like the other books better. But Lauren Brooke, WRITE MORE!!!
GREAT!!!!!.......2004-12-09
This one was really really good! It gives you an idea of what Amy's mom was really like. It is sad when Sundance gets the colic, but it is really sad knowing amy's mom didn't live that much longer after when the story is based. You can really see how much Amy has improved with the horses since her moms death. A must for Heartland and horse fans.
Heartland Holiday Edition.......2004-12-04
I am absolutely in love with the Heartland series, however, this particular book was a bit of a rude awakening. Not much time was spent in explaining the horses and Amy's time with them, and it was by far the most melodramatic and confusing story yet. I am sure this one is simply one glitch in the Heartland's numerous fascinating stories. I love the rest of 'em, just not quite this one!
Keep readin', writin' and learnin' about horses! They teach us everything!
P.S. Rescue Remedy (r) works on humans and dogs, too, not just horses! I use the Natural Remedy methods at my barn in Duvall, WA.
Love,
Anna

no standard reading set..........2006-11-05
My daughter loves little pony series. That is whay I bought it.I expected more like phonics thing or some beginner's reading idea.
HOwever, this book is just another little pony (I would call) toy book.
I don't think it helps to improve reading. My daugher read some Dr.Seuss books all by herself. I would prefer to buy Dr.Seuss...

Rose Blossom celebrates her first Christmas in Ponyville. This holiday book comes with glitter on the cover, and a full sheet of stickers!
Customer Reviews:
A Very Pretty Christmas Story That Doesn't Offend Anyone.......2007-01-24
Let me start off by saying that I am a Christian who knows that Christmas is about the birth of Jesus Christ. That being said, this little book is about a new baby pony named Rose Blossom and her first experience with a Christmas party in Ponyville. Although it never mentions Jesus, it also doesn't mention Santa either, which makes it a nice, neutral story about a happy party taking place during Christmas. The book's cover is beautiful and glittery.

Ligthning, the white mare that Ashleigh rescued is doing a lot better and is even ready to be ridden, but the Humane Society found another home for Lightning. The Hopewell Center that treats kids with cancer wants Lightning, but tells Ashleigh that she doesn't have to give her up. It was sad that Ashleigh had to make such a decision. When the kids from Hopewell visit Edgardale, Ashleigh makes up her mind. What will she do? Read it and find out. The book was great!
A great horse book!.......2002-12-26
This book is just so great! I loved it from the start to the end! I got it for Christmas and I thought that title was very fitting, "A Horse for Christmas". :)
Lightning, the poor abused horse Ashleigh and her friend Mona had rescued, had gradually become back to normal again. She's beautiful and Ashleigh took it for granted that Lightning was hers. After all, she was the one who took care of it and rescued it from "Mr. Nasty". Naturally, she is shocked when she hears that the Humane Society had found another home for Lightning. She also finds out that that home was a cancer treatment center for children who were recovering from cancer. When Ashleigh goes to Hopewell(The hospital), she meets a girl same as her age who was still recovering from cancer and loved horses. Ashleigh then has to choose whether she will give Lightning for Christmas to the sick children at Hopewells as a healing treatment...or keep Lightning.
Very interesting! I liked it alot! You have to read the next book after you're done with this one!
Book Description
Roy Rogers and Dale Evans ruled the West from the silver screen as the King of Cowboys and and Queen of the West. Off screen, this husband and wife duo raised a family and lived the "Code of the West." Now, in this new book, the Rogers family shares their memories of Roy, Dale, and Trigger, along with their other sidekicks and more than a hundred never before seen, behind-the-scenes photographs.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent.......2007-01-10
This was a gift to my mother, Roy Rogers' best fan. She likes it very much. I also liked it very much. It is a good biography of Roy Rogers and Dale Evans.
A gorgeous, highly recommended keepsake.......2005-02-08
Other books have been written about Roy Rogers and Dale Evans, the king and queen of B Western movies for over a decade who went on to produce a hit television show for ten years thereafter. None contain the rare family photos paired with personal reminiscences which make Happy Trails: A Pictorial Celebration Of The Life And Times Of Roy Rogers And Dale Evans such a memorable keepsake and winner. Happy Trails is simply packed with private photos from the duo's childhoods, early singing careers, marriage, and family life, alongside more familiar publicity shots from their films and show. A gorgeous, highly recommended keepsake.
illustrated, popular biography of the famous cowboy couple.......2005-01-26
The long marriage and professional relationship of Roy Rogers and Dale Evans throughout the 1940s and '50 is presented in a mostly sunny light, as it was in their popular TV series and movies. Not that there aren't some dark moments: Roy Roger's first wife died; and three of the couple's nine children died. But while the sorrows of such moments are not overlooked, it is the strength of Roy and Dale which comes shining through, as when dealing with culprits or problems in their films. The popular, largely pictorial biography contains a number of heretofore unpublished family photos. Fans of these stars of early TV and aficionados of popular culture will take to this book. While not undermining or even threatening the fond popular image of the couple, it presents them as not just stars, but ones who had a life outside of the limelight as well.
