Book Description

Linda Allen has spent more than 35 years in the equestrian industry, training, riding, jumping, competing, and designing courses. In 101 JUMPING EXERCISES FOR HORSE & RIDER, she provides a logical and consistent series of exercises presented in a fun and appealing way, with clear arena maps and straightforward instructions. For each exercise, Linda covers set-up; how to ride the exercise; steps to make the exercise more difficult; what every successful rider should keep in mind while working; when to move on to the next step; and the benefits of the exercise.

This must-have workbook, a sequel to the successful "read-and-ride" 101 Arena Exercises and 101 Horsemanship & Equitation Patterns, stresses safety, skill building, and success for riders of all ages and levels of experience, whether their interest is in show jumping, eventing, hunters, equitation, or just plain having fun with their horses. Designed in the same user-friendly format as the previous books, with a lay-flat comb binding, the book can be hung on the barn wall or draped over a jump standard in the training area so the reader/rider can refer to it from the saddle.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars great jumping ideas.......2007-08-07

This book has so much info on different exercises and each exercises has little hits about when to use this exercise and what to watch out for while riding it.

5 out of 5 stars Evolution of jumping skills........2007-05-13

This book breaks the demands or jumping down into a logical progression of skills until it takes the insecure beginning rider into a confident partner to the jumping horse. If these lessons are followed correctly, it can also take a training level horse into a skilled show jumper. This book is a must for anyone interested int he discipline of jumping.

4 out of 5 stars Great Jumping book for beginners .......2006-08-19

This book creates a great foundation to train yourself and your horse to excell in jumping no matter what your intentions may be. I personally would recomend this book for all ages and engligh riders even the one's with no intention on jumping.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Book To Keep In Your Tack Room!.......2006-01-14

I have started to do some of these exercises with my Appaloosa gelding. He is ten, but has gone western the two years he has been trained and is very ignorant of english riding skills.

I have been doing these exercises with him, and it really worked! He is now on his way to being a confident jumper. It was pretty easy, too. We set up the cavaletti and cross-rail grids, and followed the patterns described. I am now proud to say I have a hunter in training. This book is highly reccomended to everyone; whether your horse is a confident jumper, or just learning, 101 Jumping Exercises For Horse And Rider is a great source to jumping exercises!

5 out of 5 stars 101 Jumping Exercises for Horse & Rider .......2005-08-02

I bought the book originally to add some variety to my training sessions and to obtain ideas on different exercises. Now both my trainer and I do not jump without the book close by. The different grid exercises have added so much to our workouts! Not only has it helped our horses become more confident it has helped our equitation tremendously. I would highly recommend this book for both beginers and the more experienced rider!

This book is an absolute must have if you want to enter the wonderful world of dogshows!
I've been showing for some time, and this book tought me so much, made me think things differently and be a better handler.
I absolutely recommend it to everyone involved in showing!

4 out of 5 stars Puppy Intensive Care: A Breeder's Guide to Care of Newborn Puppies.......2007-07-22

nicely put together also I would recemmend this book to people that are just starting in the breeding world.
For an experience breeder I would want more infos ans explainations.
But over all a great book

5 out of 5 stars Pay Attention!.......2007-07-20

That seems to be the main message George Alston is giving. Pay attention to your dog, the judge, the ring conditions, and your competition. He gives great advice on how to adjust your stride, the leash, your grooming, etc. to give your dog the best opportunity to win. He also includes wonderful chapters on Psychology and Ring Etiquette, something that can make or break the handler - not just the dog. He shows showing as the art, not just the mechanics.

5 out of 5 stars Must have for a Show Dogs Library.......2007-01-18

When I spoke to my dogs breeder, her comment was that I needed this book. I was happy to tell her I had already ordered and read it! She is a veteran and reads it every Spring before she steps into the Show Ring to brush up on things. I found it to be very helpful as a beginner and I've found it even more helpful after I've been in the ring a couple of times. It leaves out a lot of the "fluff" but is a great companion book to some of the others that start out at the very beginning. Very easy to read. Confidence builder!

4 out of 5 stars The Winning Edge:Show Rings Secrets by George Alston.......2006-12-08

Haven't been showing dogs for long so I was looking for any pointers to polish up my act. This book was great I read it from start to finish and about to turn around and do it again. Highly recommended !!!!!!!!!!

Good book, easy to read with plenty to learn for the beginner to the more advanced handler. This will be a book that I will read again, there is so much to get out of it that I expect to continue to pick up more each time I read it.

5 out of 5 stars Wow!!! .......2007-05-13

If you're interested in breeding quality dogs, you need this book!! This is a fantasic resource which includes everything from making unbiased decisions regarding your own litter right up to the Best In Show ring. Pat writes with an easy to read and often humerous style. I was surprised at how much I learnt from this book. I lent it to friends who all got a lot out of it. It's packed with " Tricks of the trade" (things that no one will ever tell you) and so much more. Again if you plan on breeding or even buying a show dog- read this first!!

5 out of 5 stars Great for all dog people!.......2007-04-23

i love this book. it is easy to read and has so much information. i have already read it twice in less than 3 weeks! i learn something new everytime i pick it up. it is not a long book describing how a dog show works; this book teaches you about the dog you are showing in the ring. lots of little bits of tips throughout the book as well. i highly recommend this book to breeders or exhibitors working with dogs. you will not be sorry for purchasing!

5 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2007-03-13

I have bought just about every "How-to" show dog book out there, and this would be the only one that I would recommend. It is by far the best book of its kind on the market. I agree with the previous reviewer as well--it's not just for show people. There is a great deal of information that is valuable for any dog owner. All of my other books went straight to the bookshelf and stayed there. This one is sitting on my kitchen counter, and I have gone back to it time after time.

5 out of 5 stars Packed Full of Information and Wisdom.......2007-02-07

All dog owners should read this book, it's not just for show dog folks! Great solutions, suggestions, and explanations for common issues. The combined years of experience from the authors provide the reader direct access to today's experts. Easy to read and very informative.

Product Description

Olympic medalist Debbie McDonald and her fabulous partner, Brentina, have thrilled crowds the world over with their stunning performances. In her new book, Riding Through, Debbie describes her system for success in dressage and relates her life story: "There is more than one reason that I call this book Riding Through. Of course, first and foremost, riding through is a dressage term, something you strive for as you attempt to get your horse on the aids and moving back-to-front. You have achieved it when everything the two of you do together is one fluid motion, the ultimate of coordination and expression, in which the horse is maximizing his assets. It's all about harmony and correctness, summing up the meaning of dressage in a single short phrase. But "riding through" has other meanings for me as well. I've learned to ride through hard times, on and off a horse, when I thought about giving up. We all have to learn about riding through, because that's the only way we will arrive at our destination, whatever it may be." Even if passage and piaffe aren't your ambition, or you don't want to compete in dressage at any level, the good basic riding skills involved in learning this discipline will help you in whatever you want to do with horses--whether it's improving adjustability for jumping or just having a more pleasurable trail ride. And the challenges will keep you interested while you explore the very special connection that develops between human and horse when you're doing meaningful work together.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars I Wanted More.......2007-08-22

Debbie's new book is definitely worth buying if you like dressage. But like it's title, I wanted more connection! The book is more a generalists approach to the sport of dressage. Describing her horse career and switch to dressage, Debbie's story should become a movie!

Later chapters do give dressage pointers. But if you are looking for something new to unlock the secrets of dressage, you won't find very much here. There are some specific exercises and maybe something you haven't tried with your horse; but all in all, this volume is a elementary look at the Olympic rider's career.

The photographs, diagrams and graphic design are EXCELLENT, colorful and a good window into the quest for dressage perfection. However, if you are looking for the exact details on how to teach your horse to piaffe, for example, you will not find it here. So, Debbie, I would have found another title. As such, I give it 6 (out of 10), "horse needs to be more supple and THROUGH. (How many times have we read that under the judges remarks!)"

5 out of 5 stars Must Read for Dressage.......2007-08-10

Debbie is so down to earth and this makes this book an easy read. I love the "check" boxes which explain the hows and whys of riding, training and understanding dressage. After reading the book, it is easy to apply what you have learned to your everyday riding and training.

4 out of 5 stars Good Read.......2007-05-12

This book is put in simpler terms than a text book & makes it easier to understand for the novice. Very informative.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Information.......2006-11-10

This is an excellent book for basic canine genetics and picking a breeding partner as well as other aspects of Breeding for quality show puppies.

5 out of 5 stars The best book on breeding.......2006-02-20

Excellent book a must have if you plan on breeding.Covers everything you need to know on breeding. I will always keep this book around.

5 out of 5 stars The Breeding Bible.......2004-09-20

The absolute best information for breeders on breeding and caring for pups and mom. Written by a legend in dogs and her knowledge is extensive. I would not be without this book ~ I credit it with my being able to save many a pup & avoid many problems.

4 out of 5 stars The Joy of Breeding Your Own Show Dog.......2004-05-23

This book contained 100 pages of manuscript on whelping and breeding and care of neonates by Terri Shumsky. People who can no longer get this book should check out Terri Shumsky's HOW TO BUY AND RAISE A GOOD HEALTHY DOG, which contains all the same information given to Ann Seranne PLUS lots more.
Here's what Boxer Review said about Terri Shumsky's book.
The Book Shelf

How to Buy and Raise a Good Healthy Dog is mostly about breeding and
raising a dog. It contains one chapter on the buying of a dog, one chapter on general
health care (covering about 65 pages) and three appendixes on genetics, food and
nutrition and microchips.

"This is another Doral publication which was written by breeder and judge Terri Shumsky. The illustrations are effective particularly in regard to the birthing process. As a matter of fact, the information given in the "Having Puppies" chapter is exceptional and useful for both the novice and experienced breeder. I think that the information on general health care is quite sufficient for most dog owners. Other books which have been reviewed in this column (The Merck Veterinary Manual,Hands-On Dog Care, The Purina Encyclopedia of Dog Care and the Five Minute Veterinary Ready Reference) are perhaps too extensive for most health questions. Shumsky's book fills a niche of providing just about enough information."

5 out of 5 stars Have the basics but ready for the next steps?.......2007-07-20

Starting my second show dog's career, after blundering my way through with my first one, Peter Green and Mario Migliorini gave me excellent tips and strategies to make the handler pay more attention to his/her job. I love the section on stacking - wonderful photos to show the sublties that beginners don't see. An excellent book for someone with the basic knowledge already down who wants to take their showing to the next level.

3 out of 5 stars Not what I was Looking for.......2007-06-06

This book would be helpful for anyone beginning showing dogs. They really needn't know anything. If you already know what a show is, how to enter and have been in the ring before, you're probably not going to get much out of this. I have a few books on showing that far outwiegh this one. It's basic, simple and for complete novices only...It is written well, and is easy to understand. If this is to be your first book on dog showing, then it will provide you with enough info to get you started. I preferred, The Winning Edge: Show Ring Secrets (Howell Reference Books) and Tricks of the Trade: From Best Intentions to Best in Show, Revised Edition

5 out of 5 stars Very well done!.......2007-02-21

Great book for the learning dog handler. Combine it with a book like "Eye For a Dog" and you are on your way to understanding America's second longest running sport (next to horse racing).

5 out of 5 stars New Secrets of Successful Show Dog Handling by Peter Green.......2006-12-08

5 out of 5 stars Good Textbook.......2006-07-07

A great book that I often reccommend for anyone who asks a lot of questions about grooming, at shows or at home. I Love grooming my horses, and this book gives you many new ideas and 'tricks' to try to make your horse have good and healty coat. I doesn't matter what breed or disciplne you show, this book has it all. I show hunter-jumpers and eventing, but I also have two miniature horses that I show and this book helped me with all of them!

4 out of 5 stars Making the dirtiest chores enjoyable!.......2003-05-20

This is one of those books you don't use every day, but when you're thoroughly confused or completely forgetting something it comes in handy. It has alot of great pictures and illustrations that make it great for kids as well as adults. I learned alot about alternative grooming methods that I had never even heard of before!

Grooming to win is for any discipline, and any breed. I used it as a reference for getting back into the show ring. It's like having your own trainer with you all the time. I show Morgan and Quarterhorses and it covers everything from conditioning to getting those braids in right!
DONT SHOW WITHOUT IT!

5 out of 5 stars An Essential For Winning In Showmanship.......2001-08-22

This is one of the best books that I've found that explains grooming your horse step by step - not only for the show ring, but for everyday maintenance. Ms. Harris details breed protocols for the show ring (good news for the novice showman!). Did you know that it is considered bad form to braid the hunter on the left side of the neck, and vice versa for western pleasure horses? From achieving that showring bloom to step by step braiding guides, this book is a must for any competetive horseman's book collection!

5 out of 5 stars Very Comprehensive.......2001-06-02

From body clipping to everyday grooming, Ms. Harris has provided an excellent reference for everyone from the first-time exhibitor to seasoned professionals. She covers nearly every riding discipline imaginable, going over grooming procedures for each in a thorough yet consice manner. Her explanations are easy to translate into technique and the book offers many illustrations. This book makes for excellent reading for the novice and a wonderful referrence for the more experienced horse groom.

4 out of 5 stars Learning about structure, movement & condition for your canine.......2007-08-03

More than just a book on performance. Zink covers all aspects of conformation and it's importance, genetic dispositions, conditioning and movement as well as some preventative exercises designed to strengthen the core muscles. A reasonably well written book, by a Vet, who truly understands athletic needs for our canines. Would recommend anyone who is working agility, water or hunting trials, etc.

4 out of 5 stars Worth the read.......2002-03-24

I found this book very useful especially how to warm your dogs up before a competition and also before training also there is a fair amount of information about the dogs structure which helps explain why some dogs can do some things and others can't.

5 out of 5 stars The most comprehensive, brilliantly conceived work to date........1998-08-24

Chris Zink writes with great authority and depth of knowledge unlike any other author I have read to date. This book has completely changed how I work with my dog. Thanks a million!

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Easy Reading.......2007-09-29

I bought this book when I made the change to western riding and it gives a great over view of Western Riding from the tack to riding and horses. A great book for the beginner.

    2 out of 5 stars Basics.......2003-08-28

For a book that is titled 'The Basics', there was way too much jargon with no explanation. For example, there is a paragraph that tell the reader to 'learn the difference between the two types of hands, the fixed and the following', but then there is no explanation of the differences or even what either means. It also references different parts of the horse without explanation, such as the 'withers'. I did finally find an appendix that explains some of the terms, but it is never referenced in the book, and it does not explain all of the terms.

5 out of 5 stars Good and complete book for the beginning western rider.......2000-02-11

I loved this book! I have just bought my own quarter horse and read many interesting things in this book that helped gaining more knowledge about western riding, horses, tack and training. I think it is a very good book for people who are starting out with western riding and/or are thinking about buying their own horse.
