5 out of 5 stars Great training aide........2007-09-30

This book as a fantastic aide while training yourself and your horse. The exercises are very well described and illustrated. There are also hints for what to watch out for, and what to do if something goes wrong. The progression of exercises is well thought-out and great for slowly building up the skills of your horse. There is also a section which suggests which exercises may be good for which problems (such as collection, flexion, or gait transitions). This is a wonderful manual to have around when you need some great ideas for what to work on. Highly recommend for any rider serious about their equitation.

I recomend this book because is very easy to pratice with my hore with fast and good results!

5 out of 5 stars 101 SCHOOLING EXERCISES for Horse & Rider.......2007-03-12

There are several books on the market with schooling exercises, arena patterns and the like, but this book I found to be more useful than the rest. The things I liked about this book were numerous . There are exercises contributed by top trainers/riders such as Richard Davison, Sylvia Loch, John Lasseter and Jennie Loriston-Clarke, to name a few. All the exercises themselves take up a whole page which are very clearly done and in this large format book (11 x 8 1/2 inch) which gives plenty of room to clarify the exercise. In order to help the rider the exercises are further clarified by accompanying text such as "How do I ride this exercise?" "What should happen" "How do I ride (travers)?" "Moving On" "What can go wrong?" and "If it's not working"
The section on Rider's Problem Solver further outlines a unique way to use the book. An example being "My horse is stiff on one side" - so the required exercises for this problem are given. There are further chapters on Why School Your Horse?, Structuring Your Schooling, The Horse's Way of Going, The Rider's Position, Making Things Work and Setting up Your Arena. This book is not to be missed and will be invaluable to the rider who has to work alone and the less experienced to see how an exercise should be performed.

5 out of 5 stars The most useful book you'll need.......2006-10-12

This book is equal in theory and practicality. It teaches you how to ride your horse to practice a specific principle. It gives you inspiration and fun what to do with your horse. The diagrams are fantastic.
The riding-level chart is funky: and no explanation of what they mean.

5 out of 5 stars Essential Daily Training Reference.......2006-01-15

This is one of the most useful books I own. I've already purchased several copies for myself, my trainer and have given them as gifts. Now every training session begins and ends according to plan; no more useless circling the arena.

4 out of 5 stars Cavalletti: The Schooling of Horse and Rider over Ground Poles.......2006-11-12

This is an excellent book for those looking for a systematic way of including cavalletti in their youngster's training. Ingrid and Reiner give excellent explanations and also provide photos/drawings to further describe what they are looking for. I have used this method in training my own youngsters with good results. One caution however, it doesn't matter how good the information is if the person applying it is unskilled or inexperienced.

5 out of 5 stars Great visual aids .......2005-09-21

I couldn't put this book down! Chocked full of color photos makes this pleasing to use and wonderful to leaf through for ideas and an excellent reference. A good reminder of sound, basic training principles. A great addition to any library for dressage, hunter or jumper riders.

5 out of 5 stars A must have - inspirational!.......2004-10-31

I just love this book. I've never been so inspired to make a trip to Home Depot - I couldn't wait to build my own cavalletti and get out there and give it a try. Directions for building your own can be found here: www.texashorsemansdirectory.com/thdcav.htm This book provides an excellent introduction to working with cavalletti and is a must have for the English rider. Easy to read, well illustrated, great schooling plans and the gymnastic jumping section at the end is an added bonus. FUN, FUN, FUN!

5 out of 5 stars Cavalletti for everyone.......2003-03-24

I'm not a brave jumper and this book has really encouraged me to incorporate more ground poles and cavalletti into my regular training regime.

My main interest is dressage but my enthusiasm for trying more pole and jumping work has been set alight by this book. They cover everything from the most basic information like boots for your horse, distances for different gaits and even how to adjust side reins correctly, right through to patterns and techniques to keep things interesting.

The language used is simple, conversational and incredibly useful. Each topic - lunging, straight work over poles, gymnastic jumping etc - is addressed in detail with troubleshooting solutions provided for common problems. There are sample work schedules and cavalletti patterns for most objectives. This is a true working book that will be valuable to all levels of rider.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome training aid.......2002-04-25

This book helped me immensely with training my 3 year-old standardbred and 4 year-old thoroughbred. I would recommend this book to anyone who is training their horse(s) on their own. It gives great detail in instruction and the lessons explained really do work on young and older horses.

5 out of 5 stars Great training manual.......2007-01-30

Very easy to read and well explained book. Well worth a read. Reccomended

4 out of 5 stars Lovely pictures and fires the ambition!.......2005-10-14

This isn't really a beginner's book - except as an example of something to aspire to, as it contains page after page of the most delicious equine eye-candy.
However, I disagree with another reviewer that this book is only for the professional. As well as being to some extent a 'scholarly tome', it contains some delightful anecdotes and pictures of goats, dogs, ponies and horses not of 'classical' type performing "haute ecole" movements.
In addition, it contains some simple exercises to maximise athleticism and suppleness that any eager horseman could try, whether their equine be a Shetland pony or a Baroque stallion.
Well worth reading!

5 out of 5 stars GREAT, but for professionals!!!.......2002-10-25

I'm a reader from Germany and I've met Richard Hinrichs a few times. He actually gives some of my friends lessons and I think he's one of the greatest horseman of the 21st century. His book is well-structured and easy to understand and you can almost "feel" the sensitiveness in his way to train horses, but it's necessary that everybody who want to go "his" way with horses had lessons in the past and experiences with this kind of classical dressage.
So is this book really great for professionals and for look up in connection with a professional training but bad to get completely new in this science!!!!!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars GREAT!.......2002-10-25

...His book is well structured and good to understand, but it's better to have more experience in working with horses and especially in classical riding. Who don't want to ruin the horse has to take lessons by an well trained horse man, before...
But: The book is really great, check this out!!!!!

3 out of 5 stars Not exactly what I was expecting, somewhat disappointed........2005-02-13

I have gained a lot of enjoyment and made my schooling sessions far more interesting with the addition of poles and cavaletti. Other exercise based books (see my reviews) I've found really valuable. This book is more of a schooling guide. It starts with a discussion on tack, gaits, lungeing, mounting and the aids and is perhaps better suited to a novice rider. It then goes on to discuss how poles can complement your training - from transitions to improving gaits, rein back, leg yield and on to flying changes and preparation for piaffe and passage.
It depends on what you are looking for. The first couple of chapters are best suited to a beginner or novice rider starting pole work. I found this book useful, but I had to pick through the text to pull out the exercises. I would prefer the format of quick reference guides like, "101 Arena Exercises" or "101 Jumping Exercises for Horse and Rider". Nonetheless, I did pull out some valuable exercises and training tips.

The formative training of a young horse is crucial to its future, making the difference between a positive, willing ride and a troubled under-achiever.

This book shows how international eventer, Pippa Funnell--well known for her ability to get the best out of the youngsters she rides--builds a successful bond with the young horse. Using Pippa's personal experience and specially commissioned photographs of the on-going training of her own horses, every step of the process is covered, from assessing potential and backing through to the first competition and beyond. Every rider, whatever their discipline, wants a rewarding partnership with their horse, and this book will show how to lay the essential early groundwork.

    Customer Reviews:

    1 out of 5 stars Pretty Pictures.......2007-04-05

There are a lot of pretty pictures in this book, with the occassional good piece of advice. However, to title the book "Training the Young Horse," you are allowing your readers to expect to get information about how to train a young horse. This book has as much information as a letter to the editor would. It's a joke.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent guide for training the young event horse........2004-01-12

How can you not be a fan of Rolex Grand Slam winner, Pippa Funnell - an inspiration to all riders. As you'll discover in this book, she's down to earth and modest about her success. She admits to being "a bit soppy with my horses"; but what that translates to is a genuine respect for the horse and a true understanding of partnership. Similar to the book by Jennie Loriston-Clarke, "The Young Horse, Breaking and Training" (see my review), this book covers a lot of material, but nonetheless provides a structured program for training the youngster and an excellent starting point for future reading into specific areas. It also gives trouble shooting advice for when things don't go as planned and is well illustrated with photographs. An enjoyable read, I highly recommend.

        Book Description

A protégé of the legendary Vladimir S. Littauer and for more than thirty years director of the riding program at Sweet Briar College, Paul D. Cronin is a well-known and highly respected trainer and riding instructor. Schooling and Riding the Sport Horse is Cronin's clear and practical guide to getting the most out of your horse in a humane and sensitive way.

Beginning with a brief history of educated horsemanship from the earliest published riding masters of the sixteenth century, Cronin clarifies the differences between forward riding and classical dressage, and how at times the two have become inappropriately mixed. He then gives an in-depth presentation of the American forward riding system that is the basis of hunter/jumper riding and examines the ways in which a rider's position and controls are essential to the training of the horse.

In the system as Cronin explains it, the three basic pillars are position, controls, and schooling. In clear language, he walks the reader from the beginning stages of training through advanced jumping and cross-country work. He sets out proper methods of early schooling of the young, green, or reclaimed horse, based on freedom of movement under the weight of the rider at the walk, trot, canter, and jump; of gaining the horse's trust and cooperation; and of establishing agility and calmness in the horse at all gaits and over fences.

Schooling and Riding the Sport Horse is an important book on horsemanship for riding instructors, trainers, and amateur riders alike.
