Customer Reviews:
Good, but lacking in grooming and body language.......2005-12-15
Based on other's recommendation prior to mine, I was looking forward to this as a definitive Miniature Schnauzer guide, but was somewhat disappointed in its lack of depth on certain subjects.
Not to say this is a bad book or has irrelevant information, but for new dog owners it has both its pros and cons.
As a plus, the explanation of the breed and characteristics is thorough, as well as picking a puppy and what to expect. This takes up the first 1/3rd of the book.
I found the grooming section to be great in some areas, but not so informative in others. There is very little information about cleaning ears (the proper and safe way) and why it's important (ear mites, bacterial odor, discharge, infection)....the best it says is pluck hairs and clean with rubbing alcohol in only two sentences. There should be much more on ear treatment. There is a section devoted to oral care which is good. This book more so concentrates on brushing the coat, baths, and clippering.
I would have also like to have seen more on body language as new owners may not always know what their dog is trying to communicate to them. This includes if the puppy or mature dog is not feeling well and what 'subtle' signs to look for.
There is a section describing ailments, parasites, and diseases...but not so much information on how to treat, other than: "See your vet." Duh!!
The only training really covered in this book is "house-breaking, which while important is one facet of a puppy/human relationship. I would have liked to see expanded discussion on other basics such as: Sit, Stay, barking, etc...
While I do recommend this book, it is a very high level look at the breed, but lacking in some detailed information on important day to day concerns of new dog owners.
Good Book, Could Have More Basic Info........2005-07-29
This book is pretty well done as pet books go. The photos and the quality of the paper are excellent. I was a little disappointed not to have an anticipated weight as a function of age or the weight range of the mature dog. I would like to have known how much and when (what hours of the day and how many times a day is best)to feed the puppy as he matures. I got all this info and more from the vet, but more detail in the book, of what to do and what to expect from the typical schnauzer from puppy to dog would have been helpful.
There is a lot of information about showing and breeding, but these are not my areas of interest. The section on Housebreaking and Training beginning on page 80, is well done and quite helpful.
Very helpful for a beginner.......2000-12-21
I bought this book because we were considering getting a new puppy and were interested in Miniature Schnauzers. I liked this book because it gave a brief history and evolution of today's dog which helped me understand more fully the personality of the Miniature Schnauzer. It also answered my key questions about selecting a puppy, as well as, crate training and housebreaking. The book will give you a general feel for what will be needed to appropriately care for this breed. I feel that after reading this book, I can better converse with breeders and am more informed. Since I haven't read any other books specific to the Miniature Schnauzer, I cannot compare to other sources. But I have found it more than adequate for my current need - preparation for purchasing a puppy. One final comment, the book has glossy pages and has plenty of supplemental color photographs. I particulary enjoyed the photographs of a variety of dogs of this breed - it helps me tremendously in the selection process.

I can get same information just anywhere........2006-07-29
I was looking for just the knowlege for the very breed. However, this book offers nothing about it. I can get the same information online browsing.
Can Anyone Help Me?.......2003-01-11
Can anyone tell me if this Book by Karla Rugh, is a better book to buy for the miniature schnauzers or "the Essential Miniature Schnauzer" by Ian Dunbar? Which one is the better buy for the buck of the two?
Great.......2000-06-12
I thought it was a very knolageable book to say the least.

GREAT BOOK.......2007-01-10
Great book. 166 pages , over 200 photos and illustrations. International in scope.
As a Standard schnauzer owner/operator for 20 years, I consider the best book Ive seen re:SS.
Great Schnauzer resource.......2006-07-04
I found this book to be a valuable source of relevant schnauzer information.
So-so.......2005-02-10
Very presentable book with excellent color photos. The training section is also very good. The constant advertising of the Nylabone (chew toys) however, is quite irritating. Also, the book tends to generalize quite a bit and presumes that you have a puppy instead of an older dog. The health care section makes no mention of health problems specific to Schnauzers such as hip dysplasia and cysts and recommends you take your dog to the Vet for virtually every ailment. Save your money and read the internet if you want info. Or you can have my copy.
A must for any potential Standard owner........2002-03-25
We are getting a Standard next year, and I thought I knew everything about this breed until I read this book. Very informative, and the pictures are great!! I am very pleased with this book and I would tell anyone considering this wonderful breed to definitly get this book!!
Excellent Book on Standard Schnauzers (& the only one).......1998-11-05
Anyone interested in learning more about Standard Schnauzers MUST get this book. It is informative, well written and has some great glossy colour photos of those wonderful Standard Schnauzers.

The most comprehensive book on the Schnauzer........1999-07-17
Gallant combines experience, statistics, and photography to complete a book that gives a wealth of information on the three breeds of Schnauzers. Anyone who wants to truly know about the Schnauzer SHOULD read this book.
The best book available on Schnauzers.......1999-03-27
This book is highly recommended for anyone interested in Schnauzers. Mr. Gallant has been a breeder for over 25 years in the Netherlands and currently in South Africa. Excellent information regarding temperament, grooming, training and pedigrees. The section on the Giant Schnauzer is comprehensive and accurate. I recommend this book to all who purchase a Schnauzer.
intelligent and down to earth introduction to schnauzers.......1998-07-03
This is the first book about schnauzers that I've ever read that combines European and American schnauzers in one book. There are lots of pictures of both US champions and European champions. Mr. Gallant also writes very well about temperment. I really recommend this book to every one who considers getting a schnauzer.

Giant Schnauzers by Joe Stahlkuppe.......2004-06-22
I have lots of pix of my show dogs with natural ears. http://www.bestinshow.net/dogs/magnakennel.html Nice book. Better than most.
good info but.......2003-03-29
I wish they would of had more pictures with no ear cropping....
Required reading.......2003-01-28
Giants are a very unusual breed and they take an unusual owner. We have two Giants and this book is right on the money. It should be required reading for anyone thinking about adding a Giant to their home. These dogs are powerful, stubborn, loving and loyal. Not everyone can be a successful Giant owner and that is why so many of these dogs end up in rescue.
Giant Schnauzers by Joe Stahlkuppe clearly describes these wonderful dogs and their needs. If you are thinking about purchasing a Giant, please read this book.
Book Description
Cutting an impression of imposing power and unmistakable style, the Giant Schnauzer is revered as a bold and dependable guard dog, an adaptable working dog and a good-natured, handsome family dog. One of Germany's many auspicious contributions to the dog world, the Schnauzers, of which the Giant is the largest, possess distinctive facial furnishings, a blunt-wedged muzzle and an alert, reliable temperament. For the family desiring a protector and companion, the Giant Schnauzer ranks among the best possible choices.
Among the top breeders of working dogs in the US is author Barbara J. Andrews, who has written insightful yet concise chapters on the breed's history, characteristics and the breed standard, with the assistance of the world's top Schnauzer breeder Sylvia Hammarstrom of the famous Skansen kennels in California. This book also details the selection of a puppy, rearing, training and feeding the puppy, crate-training, home safety and much more. Additionally, a lavishly illustrated chapter on preventive healthcare by Dr. Lowell Ackerman provides up-to-date accurate information on inoculations, parasite control, selecting a veterinarian and other topics vital to the ownership of a healthy pure-bred dog. Readers will enjoy learning about the various activities in which the Giant Schnauzer excels, from farm work and protection work to dog shows, agility trials and obedience events.

Dan's books.......2004-10-23
To answer the question of the other poster, this edition has gone out of print as he is working on another one. That should hopefully be coming out soon.
His books are a fabulous history of the breed in the US and around the world.
What a great book about a great breed.......2004-08-13
This is the kind of information that people really need to know about a breed. This is the kind of book that is all too hard to find, written by an expert. This is not a book with 10 pages in the front about schnauzers and 200 pages about any kind of dog. This is a real, schnauzer book, completely for the min. Schnauzer lover. Why would anyone put such a good book out of print? What is the matter with these publishers? A book like this is good forever. These basic things never change. Howell book HOuse should be ashamed.
Accurate Information - Easy to read format.......2000-09-09
I have both of Dan Kiedrowski's books, the original and this latest edition. He takes the breed from its origins in Germany to the present day. If you are a breeder, exhibitor or just a schnauzer lover you will be in for a treat. There are photos from the past and the present, so that you can clearly see the changes in the breed. The Miniature Schnauzer is a wonderful breed and this book shows the breed beautifully. If you are interested in a specific breed, schnauzer or other it would be wise to read all you can, and learn all you can so that you will be able to make an informed choice. Dan's book will give you accurate unbiased information regarding schnauzers.
new shnauzer owner.......1999-12-15
THIS BOOK WOULD BE AN OUTSTANDING REFERENCE GUIDE FOR THE BREADER OR OTHER INDIVIDUAL INTERESTED IN THE HISTORY OF THE BREED. I JUST PUT A DEPOSIT ON A SCHNAUSER AS A CHRISTMAS GIFT FOR MY DAUGHTERS AND WAS MORE INTERESTED IN AN ENTRY LEVEL GUIDE BOOK TO CARE AND TRAINING, I WOULD NOT RECOMEND IT FOR THE NOVICE.
If you love miniature schnauzers,, you'll love this book........1999-02-12
This is the best new book on miniature schnauzers that I've seen. It covers history of the breed and desirable vs not-so desirable physical characteristics, and other interesting information, plus, oodles of pictures of modern champions and their lines. I found almost all of the champions in our schnauzers' pedigrees. The book did contain a clinical report on eye ailments, which was oddly out of sync with the rest of the text (it looked like someone was just trying to get their article published). This chapter should have been completely omitted or else presented as a general discussion of the ailments typical of the breed. Aside from this problem, the book should be a visual delight for any schnauzer lover.

Great Start For Schnauzer Lovers.......2000-07-13
This book gives good insight into what you can look forward to when owning a mini of your own. I had my schnauzer for 11 years from when I was 8 to 19. My sweet dog had to be put to sleep because of health problems though. In tribute to him I can say that owning a schnauzer will greatly imrpove the quality of your life. Read this book, learn what to expect, then go out and get a mini of your own and enjoy the never ending love that this dog will bring you.
