The oldest breed of horse in the world, the Arabian's beginnings are anything but humble. Born, according to ancient Arab tales, of the south wind, coming from Hoshabeh, now Yemen:
To create the Arab horse, God spoke to the south wind: "I will create from you a being which will be a happiness to the good and a misfortune to the bad. Happiness shall be on its forehead, bounty on its back and joy in the possessor."
When it comes to talking about Arabian horses, such passion is not unusual, and it's a passion that author Peter Upton and editor Hossein Amirsadeghi, along with photographers Rik van Lent, Sr. and Jr., lovingly share in Arabians: The Classic Arabian Horse. Both a stunning photographic journey--composed of more than 250 full-color photographs, arranged by geographical area--and a fascinating history lesson, Arabians begins with a thorough examination of the horse's origins, which date back to 1700 B.C. Such notable historical figures as the prophet Mohammed and the queen of Sheba were Arabian devotees. The breed's popularity spread outside of the Arab world beginning in the last half of the 17th century, peaking in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Other areas of discussion include the distinct features and characteristics of the breed (its exquisite head and high tail carriage as well as its "vigour, courage and great powers of endurance") and the numerous strains and substrains of the breed, which, when combined with a glossary of Arabic terms and a complete listing of Arabian horse organizations, registries, and societies, truly make Arabians the "definitive book on this revered breed." --Stefanie Hargreaves

5 out of 5 stars As Great As The Last.......2005-10-07

This mysterious and enchanting book takes Alec and Henry to a setting far from the one in the previous book. In the barren deserts of Arabia, they search for their black stallion in his own home. A thrilling tale of survival, and just as vivid, with a race for high stakes and a horse to beat any of the same caliber all thrown in too make the story plot thicken.

This book had me turning the pages, never wanting to put it down. The story was very different from the first, but not as much as some sequels. Farley had a way of keeping his characters in prospective, and in turn, the story again took the readers on an exhilarating ride. A great piece of literature for young tweens to read, though the movie does have violence in it, but seems to make the story even more thrilling. An excellent book I will be sure to show my kids one day.

4 out of 5 stars Bred for War--or for Racing!.......2005-09-10

After a mysterious attempt on the Black's life by an unknown one-armed assassin, Alec is shocked to meet an Arab sheik who claims to be the true owner. Regretfully surrendering the horse he has trained and loves dearly, Alec expects to spend a gloomy summer before his senior year. Conveniently for all concerned racing owner, Mr. Volence, agrees to take both trainer, Henry and the devoted youth abroad to seek better bloodlines for his stables--and incidentally search for the Black in distant Arabia.

Plunged into an exotic world of desert, treachery and bloodlust Alec and his party set out for a remote mountainous region where the Sheik reigns. Alec soon learns the price of betrayal, where blood demands blood, and the great race--held every 5 years--will soon be run. Befriended by a local orphan youth named Raj, Alec's party is abandoned to their fate in the desert, then rescued by a young but suspicious chieftain. How can Alex reach the elusive Sheik and convince him to sell
or gift him the magnificent Black? What will it take to end the bitter feud between rival sheiks? How can an American boy acquire the desert skills necessary to survive and win respect in a hostile environment? This sequel is every bit as exciting as the first book in the series, with hope for future stories, as it explores the wonderful and unique bond between boy and horse.

5 out of 5 stars Best Arabian book I've found.......2007-06-17

If I bought only one book about Arabians, this would be it. What I like best about this book are the pictures of foundation sires of the past and influential stallions of more recent years. The reader does have to keep in mind that the book was published 20 years ago, so a lot of modern stallions won't be included. This is a great book that covers every subject in detail and has some really good conformation drawings that show you what is and is not desirable.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Have!.......2007-01-16

As an Arabian horse breeder, I have had this book for years and always recommend it to any new owners of an Arabian horse. There is a lot of overall general horse information as well as highlights on historical breeding programs, Arabian conformation, showing basics, building/fencing etc. This is a real "How to..." book.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book for beginners.......2003-12-06

I am a first time Arab owner and have found this book to be invaluable. Geared toward the Arab breed, Sharon included many topics in her book that can be used for any breed. From confirmation and breeding to the best halter to show off your horses head and how to train your horse how to hold that "Arab pose". There is so much to learn from this book for everyone from the backyard owner to the professional trainer/show person.

5 out of 5 stars The Arabian: A Guide for Owners.......1999-12-18

This book is absolutely the best book I have ever read about the Arabian Horse.I am a small Bask line breeder and this is my reference book, I have two copies, one I use on a daily basis, and one I purchased to keep because it is signed by Sharon Byford and I will treasure it always.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent book for the Arabian horse owner........1997-12-22

This is an excellent book for the Arabian horse owner; both the novice horse owner, for which this is a MUST and the experienced horse owner, form whom this provides excellent back to basics. The author's knowledge of the Arabian horse and her obvious pleasure at living amongst them generates enthusiasam for the reader and encourages capable, caring horsemanship. Illustrations and photos are nicely balanced with text, rich in history of the Arabian horse, foundation bloodlines, proper conformation, tips on grooming, feed, trailering, showing, behaviour, selecting veterinarians, and much, much more.

Book Description

He was named "Sham" for the sun, this golden red stallion born in the Sultan of Morocco's stone stables. Upon his heel was a small white spot, the symbol of speed. But on his chest was the symbol of misfortune. Although he was as swift as the desert winds, Sham's proud pedigree would be scorned all his life by cruel masters and owners.

This is the classic story of Sham and his friend, the stable boy Agba. Their adventures take them from the sands of the Sahara to the royal courts of France and, finally, to the green pastures and stately homes of England. For Sham was the renowned Godolphin Arabian, whose blood flows through the veins of almost every superior Thoroughbred. Sham's speed-like his story-has become legendary.

This is one of my favorite horse stories of all time. It is about a young boy who makes a bond with an increadible horse. A must read for any horse lover!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Marguerite Henry's best ever!.......2006-11-17

This is my favorite horse story ever! This book stands above all others for me and I will always remember it. My mom read this to me when I was 9 years old and still to this day, I have never read it's equal. Henry's writing is so beautiful, the story so touching and the characters so real. A plot unfolds about a young stable boy in Morocco and his golden-bay stallion who would one day be known as the Godolphin Arabian, who's bloodline still runs in race horses of today. It's quite possible a lot of this book is based on fact. A simply amazing story in all respects! I must warn sensitive readers however, there are some very intense parts of this book, some sad parts which are sure to make most people cry and a few parts where there is fairly harsh abuse and neglect of animals. Maybe not the best choice to read to very young kids, especially if they are the type to get scared easily. Overall, I would say the book has an excellent balance of tragedy and triumph. The ending is a beautiful one, both happy and a little sad but satisfying and well worth reading the story.

4 out of 5 stars Review: King of the Wind.......2006-03-30

King of the Wind is a great book by Marguerite Henry. It is about a mute boy named Agba and his horse Sham. Agba goes with Sham on many adventures together. Agba goes with Sham from the royal stables in Morocco to Gog Magog. Sham also sires many winning foals and when he is gone, Agba goes back to Morocco.
I enjoyed this book very much. I liked it because it is about horses. I also liked it because it was full of adventure. It was sad and exciting and there were many parts where Sham and Agba were seperated. Agba was very brave for a young, mute boy and Sham kept him company with his firy spirit that only Agba could control.
My favorite part was when the cook tried to drive Sham. He wanted to show that he did not need Agba to drive Sham. He left Agba at the royal kitchens then set out. Sham bidded his time till the cart was groaning with goods and a young pig. Then "BAM!" He went wild and ran like the wind, sending the goods, the pig, and the cook into the air. The cook runs after first the pig, then Sham, then the pig, until he is so confused that he catched nither. In the end the apple woman cathes Sham and the cook is so fustrated that he sells Sham to a cruel man. I like this part best because it is so funny and shows Shams firy nature.

5 out of 5 stars Late Childhood Should Always Include Books This Special.......2005-09-05

The Christmas I was nine, I got a boxed set of Marguerite Henry novels and while I loved all of them and read them day and night during the break from school, I think this one goes down as my favorite. A few years after I first read this novel, my family moved and I discovered it was also, by a nice coincidence, one of the favorite books of a girl I met in our new neighborhood, who went on to be my best friend to this very day. That connection, too, makes this a special read. However you might come to possess this wonderful book, I think you'll agree, it's one to be cherished.

King of the Wind is the story of a mute boy named Agba, who lives works in the royal stables in Morocco during the eighteenth century, where the Sultan has perhaps the finest collection of horses on earth: maybe the greatest ever in history. Among the animals Agba cares for is a colt who has long been Agba's favorite. This horse was born with a mark called the wheat ear, that is regarded among Moroccans as so unlucky, custom mandates that any foal possessing it be destroyed at once. However, this colt also is marked by a sign of extraordinary good fortune, which reprieves the death sentence and is there to battle the wheat ear in the animal's life: the good in constant yin/yang conflict with the bad.

As a gesture of goodwill, the all-powerful Sultan elects to send a shipment of his finest horses to his friend and ally, King George of England. As the horses chosen for the journey are prepared, Agba is given the chance to accompany these prized animals by ship to the far-off Christian kingdom. One of the colts hand-picked by his Excellency is none other than the omen-marked horse Agba has grown to love. The journey northward upon the ocean is undertaken, but an unscrupulous sea captain has shortchanged the Sultan's agents and not provided food for the equine passengers. Therefore, the cargo of fine desert steeds who are unloaded in England appear little better than half-starved nags, and never find their way to the royal court.

Cast out among beggars and in a strange, cold nation where he knows no one and does not understand the language, Agba refuses to leave his beloved horse's side and the happenings that come to pass in the life of the desert stable boy and the fine, though seemingly run-down stallion, form the basis of a delightful novel that is simultaneously a tale of a boy and his extraordinary horse, and a history lesson in eighteenth-century equine lore. In Miss Henry's story, fact and fiction meet as Agba's horse becomes the celebrated Godolphin Arabian, from whom roughly one-third of all modern thoroughbreds can trace descent.

I guess you can tell I really like this book, and I think almost anyone would as well!

5 out of 5 stars One of my absolutely favorite books from childhood........2005-08-24

All of Marguerite Henry's books are classics, but I think this one, recounting the life of the Godolphin Arabian, a founding father of the American thoroughbred, is my favorite. I bought it for my own children and as I read it to them, I was taken back to the day I first read the story. Even after thirty two years, Sham and Agba still make me cry.

It's writing is simple, the words easy for a child to understand, but the story is so full of awe and respect for the great horse that you can't help but be moved. The illustrations are also some of the finest in children's literature. Wesley Dennis painted watercolor masterpieces for many (all?) of Marguerite Henry's books, but I think the works in this book are particularly inspired. Both the writing and the artwork are true treasures I am honored and delighted to be able to share with my children.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book about the Arabian Horse Show World for beginners to seasoned riders.......2006-11-24

I have been involved with Arabians for many years at many different levels. I don't know any other source that explains the Arabian horse and the show world in such depth and clarity. It is a unique look at the disiplines of the show arena , giving the professional and amateurs, trainers and exhibitors point of view. For instance, one judge/trainer talks about show nerves. He says that he has students who in their world outside horses are doctors, lawyers, even a nobel prize winner, and they get nerous about showing.

I think this book serves so many people: the person new to the Arabian horse, those just curious about the breed and those who have been involved for years.

The Cindy and second generation eventing portions of the series were dark days for Thoroughbred. The plots have since switched back to racing and the newest few books have been exceptional. Just as we thought there was hope for the Thoroughbred series to be restored to its former glory Harper Collins has decided to end the series abruptly after #72. With such a dedicated following and online fan base with members from all over the world, this is a classic and beloved series that has inspired many people and provided horse fans with vicarious thrills and adventure. 2 out of 5 stars What Went Wrong?.......2004-11-10

I am very angry with the way the Thoroughbred books are changing. Joanna Campbell did a far better job writing them, and I think the new author needs to take a hike. Ashleigh and Samantha have always been my favorite charcters, and now they are totally kicked out of the picture. Especially Sammy in the later books. And what of the other characters, like Mandy and Jilly? They played such large parts in previous books, so where are they now? I especially dislike Cindy. She was tolerable at first, when she had just one special horse...Glory. Now though, she has had numerous 'Wonder Horses' and as soon as a new book comes out, she drops them. I say kill Cindy off, and bring back Sammy and Ash. And stop creating all these stupid new characters!

5 out of 5 stars Dubai world cup.......2004-06-13

this was the best maybee not the best but a really good thoroughbred book. Its about Cindy and she gets her jockys licence but she loses her first race. then she wins her second race. then Ahsleigh asks her to race Wonders Champion a triple crown winner in the Dubai World Cup. But if Cindy races she has to race aginst Ashleigh her coach and best friend. She takes the challenge but will cindy risk looseing her friend ship with ashleigh. I give this book a 10 stars it was so good. If you love horses read the thoroughbreed series but remember start from number 1

2 out of 5 stars I liked Joanna Campbell's stories much better..............2004-02-19

I didn't really like this book because practically 12 books were all on Cindy, Cindy, Cindy. She acted like a brat at the track in Arabia, saying Champion was "her horse." why did Ashleigh ever let her ride Champion anyway? It was obvious Champion was going to win, and this book is all about dating this ugly guy named Max.

4 out of 5 stars A great informative book!.......2001-12-09

I really like this book. It's a very informative about some of the most important sires in Arabian horse breeding.
As an Arabian horse owner, I wouldn't want to be without this book in my collection.
I very much enjoy reading about the horses behind the the famous names and show results, the REAL horses, their special hallmarks and what their owner/trainers remembers about them. Special memories.
And being from Sweden, I am of course very proud to see one Swedish bred stallion, Alladdin, among the legends!
I just wish there would have been colored pictures, that would have made the difference to a five star rating.
I highly recommend this book!

4 out of 5 stars Arabian Legends, USA.......2001-05-10

As a reader from NZ, I found this book readable, informative and full of wonderful and interesting pictures. The "human interest" stories about breeders finding their "hearts delight" form part of the text - and as one scrolls through the book, the role of the owner in the fate and fame of each horse is revealed as the true catalyst in their journey to immortality. A very interesting book, but the quality of the binding is poor. GJMD NZ South Pacific

5 out of 5 stars A "must-have" for your Arabian Horse Library.......2000-10-28

This book is an important "who's who" of the Arabian horse world. Twenty-two of the most influential stallions are profiled. Of special interest are the the only two mares profiled, Bint Sahara and *Sanacht. Bint Sahara is the dam and granddam of three stallions featured - Ferzon, Fadjur, and Khemosabi. The combination of *Sanacht and Bint Sahara through the blood of Fadjur created one of the greatest breeding and show horse dynasties of the Arabian world. An invaluable resource book for researching potential purchases of horses and stud services. The stories of the people involved with these horses are fascinating. One of my favorites is the story of two great breeders, Frank McCoy of California and Dr. Eugene LaCroix of Arizona, meeting halfway in the desert near Indio, California. In one trailer was Dr. LaCroix's stallion Aarief, and in the other trailer was McCoy's Bint Sahara daughter, Fersara. They took them out, bred them, put them back into their trailers and went home. The result was another of the breed's great stallions, The Real McCoy.

5 out of 5 stars Arabian Legends.......2000-08-12

A good review of important sires. We especially enjoyed the chapter on the Kales and *Muscat.

4 out of 5 stars 20th Century Arabians.......2000-04-23

Khemosabi, Bask, Fadjur, Nazeer, Naborr, and other great Arabians are covered in this nice-sized edition. If you are interested in breeding, bloodlines, and the lives of the individual super stars of the breed, this is the book for you! Great photos, nice insight into the lives of the stallions. I believe the only mare covered is Estopa, the Spanish Egyptian mare. This book may not satify the advanced breeder, since it covers the legends and not the lesser-known stallions who have been good influences, although not as gigantic. Fun to read.

Product Description

This newly published collection of true Arabian horse names is now available from Syrian-born author, Bachir Bserani. In this exciting book, written with Arabian horse owner and breeder, Kellie Kolodziejczyk, Bachir Bserani supplies more than just a mere listing of Arabic words. He goes beyond by providing an extensive collection of true and appropriate, authentic Arabic names for colts and fillies. The Arabic names are written in Romanized Arabic, as well as, actual Arabic calligraphy. Additionally, beside each name is the English meaning, as well as, the phonetic pronunciation. What makes this book especially charming is the narrative and stories, written from an authentic Middle Eastern perspective, and with a mild dialectical tone. Highlighted is the great significance of the Arabian horse to the Bedouin tribes and Middle Eastern culture. With exotic tales of the desert, including some of the author's own personal experiences, this book tugs at the heart, bringing to the surface the love and admiration people from around the world feel for these mystical and cherished creatures. A wonderfully unique and valuable reference tool not found anywhere else. Many breathtaking, full-color photographs throughout, including many by equine photographer IRENE TONES.

4 out of 5 stars More than Just Names.......2007-09-11

This book is one of my favorite Arabian books. It has so much more to it than just authentic Arabian names, it is rich with the stories that are in it too. Really gives the reader some insight into the culture of the Arabian horse. This book will remain a staple in my breeding program. I would love to see some other books by this author too.

5 out of 5 stars Simply a wonderful book!.......2005-11-08

I just received my copy of Authentic Arabian Horse Names and I couldn't put it down. Congratulations! It is a book that is long overdue in the Arabian horse community. I have experienced the poor naming choices that plague the Arabian horse here in the United States. Now owners and breeders will be able to name their horses properly with confidence.

I was struck by the wonderful stories about life in the desert with the Arabian horse. I teared up as I read about Abou Mahmood and his beloved Rheemah. The stories give us readers a greater understanding of why the Bedouin people hold the Arabian in such a high status.

Book Description

A dandy story for all horse lovers and a worthy rival to Marguerite Henry's King of the Wind. Ms. Henry based her story on this very book, written in 1846 by French author and sportsman Eugene Sue. Here now is Alex de Jonge's immensely readable translation of the original tale--an imaginative mixture of fact and legend recreating the life of the Godolphin Arabian and his constant companion, Grimalkin the cat.

4 out of 5 stars Horse lover's review.......2007-02-06

This is a facinating account of the origins of the thorobred horse. It recounts the Goldolphin Arabian's birth and takes you on a exotic trip through history. Pictures are vidid in the descriptions of the era and the excitement of those times.
I have always been intrigued by the horse and even more so after reading this great book.
