Great reference!.......2007-09-04
I love learning new things about my dogs, and this book taught me a lot!
Superlative study of canine body language!.......2007-07-28
We rescued an abused Great Dane puppy 3-4 months ago. She had been mistreated by 2 females in her short 6 month life, so she hated women. Within a month, I had been to the local ER twice with dog bites(not puppy mouthing, but snarl/lunge/attack bites). A behaviorist recommended this book as a way to identify the triggers and expressions that would tell me that the pup's very low fear aggression threshold was about to be crossed. With knowledge from this book along with many exercises and activities, the pup, now 85 lbs. is starting to calm down. This book has probably saved her life as we had to get her volatile and frenzied behaviors under control before she gained another 50 lbs.
A must read for all dog owners. Now we feel sad about how previous pups had communicated with us, and we were too dumb to catch the messages they were sending!
This book is very helpful!.......2007-05-28
I've had dogs all my life, but haven't actually studied them until recently. I find my old interpretations of dog communication were very human-biased. This book is very illuminating on how dogs really communicate. The author communicates the subject using excellent photos and photo sequences, which is such a help! I generally find text descriptions inadequate and even videos are difficult, because the sequences go by so fast. I think sometimes the author overdoes the interpretation, but as I gain expertise I may revise that comment. This is a great book and is one of my primary references.
Very useful book.......2007-05-28
I, and everyone I've shown it to, have found this book very educational. I thought I'd just use it as a reference, looking up specific body language as needed (which is a very good use for it), but I find myself reading it cover to cover because it's so fascinating. I've had dogs all my life, and trained them and loved them, but I can't believe how ignorant I was about their body language. As I read the book I see these behaviors in my dog and wonder how I could have been so unobservant. I think even folks who know a lot about dogs and training can learn some things from this. I plan to buy more to use as gifts.
Best Book For Understanding Dog Body Language.......2007-05-28
I volunteer at a shelter and am fascinated by temperment testing. While I have the benefit of watching a wonderful temperment tester each week, reading this book has been an incredible education. Now when I watch dogs tested, I can see what our tester is seeing... the freezing, the whale eye, the stress behaviors, and so on. I'm learning to better judge how a given dog reacts to other dogs or to cats.
For me, the benefits include being better able to know how to handle the dogs because I can better judge their personalities and shape my behavior to them, know how the dogs I handle are reacting to various stimuli, and be able to tell perspective adopters more about the dogs than I previously could.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who either works with dogs or owns a dog. You can't go wrong. The photos are so clear and the writing so easily understandable, that everyone can absorb the information. Be warned though... you'll want to read this book over and over and over again until the pages are well worn. It's just THAT good!
Book Description
From Schnauzers to Shepherds, and Dachshunds to Dobermans, dogs are natural meditators.
Meditating with you improves your dog's health and well-being, and makes his tail wag just a little bit wider. It also helps excitable dogs become calmer, aggressive dogs become more loving, and anxious dogs become zen-ishly calm.
Unsure how to start? Let your dog be your guru.
In this "tail," dog-lover and life-long meditator, James Jacobson and his dog, Maui, unleash the simple, non-dogmatic meditation method that they have been teaching and using for over a decade. Their method makes this ancient practice so doggone simple that it works with any size, age, or breed of dog.
The barest bone of it? Get quiet and focus on your spiritual connection with your dog. It's the intention behind this simple act that transforms it into a meditation practice.
Meditation isn't just great for dogs. In humans, meditation relieves stress, helps us live in the moment, and sharpens mental focus. "How to Meditate with Your Dog" shows how to do all this, while deepening the bond, and broadening the love, between you and your dog.

The book was quite basic. I didn't think it was worth the money.

Sorry. This was one of the silliest books I have ever seen on Meditation. I have two dogs, and I think I could explain meditation with them far better than this book does.

wonderful stories.......2007-06-23
My 10 year-old son tried reading it,and thought the stories were too sad, but I adore this book. Very sweet, humbling stories about good people and good animals.
The Healing Kind of Savior, Cat-like........2006-06-11
In this volume, Mr. Canfield and crew have compiled a smorgasboard selection of short stories about pets who fortify us and make life bearable. Especially poignant to me was "the medicine cat" as I, too, had one named Tosca. She gave up the ghost a few months ago at the age of eighteen years, as I had no way to get to her when she needed support of the kind she gave to me several years ago. They recognize the special love and devotion of animals to bless our hearts and homes.
"Cat lovers will tell you that felines are 'poetry in motion,' living sculptures at rest, and that the warm weight of a purring cat...is a surefire cure for all that ails you."
It is the physical acts of love to bring the gift of life as expressed in "The Healing Touch." I cried as I read "The Language of the Heart" about an unusual rabbit and his healing the hurt of a little girl who'd turned inward and no longer could talk. Something had died in that child which this loving rabbit cured. His innocence and trust had rekindled the same qualities in the child. The loving presence of an animal can heal where words have no effect. Alas, Roger Rabbit bit the tip off my little finger one day, which led me to the ER for a Saran-wrap bandage (to stop the bleeding -- a bandaid wouldn't work) and a tetanus shot. Needless to say, I found him another home.
"A small gesture -- the insistent tap of a cat's paw" about Jack, an adopted stray kitten (like Dante in Troy, Alabama), who grew into Ellen's savior. He woke her from a daydream of tragedy; Star woke me up with that same gesture over and over so that I would not strangle from Acid Reflux. Pets do love and care for their owners. This volume is one I will treasure for years to come. It is full of memories about pet owners' animals, not just cats and dogs.
Awesome.......2006-03-10
I really enjoyed this book. The main reason I liked it is because it is all about cats and dogs, and I am a hardcore animal lover. Another reason I liked it is because the stories are not made up in someone's mind. These stories are real stories that real people lived through. The last reason I liked this book so much is because you don't have to read it like an ordinary book. You can read it like I did and just jump around to stories that sound good to you, instead of reading the book cover to cover.

Even if you aren't a big reader of the "Chicken Soup" series, you will still like this book. The stories are great and you can just pick the book up anytime and pretty much read a section at random. Fun to keep on the coffee table, or as a gift book for animal lovers.

Book Description
Balto has a quiet life as a sled dog—until tragedy strikes. Dozens of children in Nome become sick with diphtheria. Without antitoxin serum, they will perish—and the closest supply is 650 miles away! The only way to get the serum to Nome is by sled, but can the dogs deliver it in time? Heading bravely into a brutal blizzard, Balto leads the race for life.

Customer Reviews:
Great Book!.......2005-05-01
Just so you'd know, this book is not denouncing Togo. It is merely telling Balto's side of the story. And it is a courageous one taht deserves to be well-known. There.
One day, a serious diptheria epidemic breaks out in Nome. Sled dogs are selected to deliver serum to the town before time runs out. Will they succeed?
This compelling book tells the story of Balto's brave and graet contribution to this race (he never tried to claim all the credit!), and I would recommend it even to Leonhard Seppala, so he would stop despising Balto, but sadly, he is now dead.
Great book for introducing the Iditarod to children.......2005-04-01
If you love the Iditarod and you want your children (or children you're fond of) to be introduced to this great race, the story of Balto and the Great Race by Elizabeth Cody Kimmel is a good place to start, beginning with the cover illustration by Nora Köerber. This book is a Stepping Stones chapter book with black and white illustrations throughout.
At the beginning of the book is a map of Alaska showing the Iditarod railroad and dogsled trail, along with some illustrations depicting the basic story of this great race against time to get much-needed diphtheria serum to Nome in 1925.
Balto is a Siberian husky born to run, and to lead. He guided his musher, Gunnar Kaasen, into Nome on the final leg of the journey, when only this magnificent dog could sense the way through a terrible, deadly blizzard with no trail to follow and wind at such strength it tossed Kaasen and dogsled into the air, almost losing their precious cargo. A short time before this near disaster, Balto saved the team from going through the ice to certain death. His instincts were in the realm of the supernatural and his devotion to the task at hand human in awareness.
It states on the back cover that this book is for children in grades 1-3. As the Cleveland Museum of Natural History states on the same back cover, "Balto's story is one of courage, cooperation and inspiration, and personal sacrifice for the greater good."
Carolyn Rowe Hill
Balto: not just for kids.......2002-01-27
We purchased this book after seeing the real Balto (courtesy of the art of taxidermy) at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History. Our quest in Northeast Ohio, where Balto enjoyed his senior years, was prompted by my seven year-old daughter's love-affair with the animated film about this dog, who navigated a lost sled team carrying life-saving medicine through Alaska in 1925. I hereby confess publicly that, after myself reading the book, which is aimed at the 9 year-old set, I cried, much as I had done 35 years before after reading "Lassie Come Home." This account, however, is much more compelling than "Lassie" or "Old Yeller," because it entirely factual (possibly excepting the subjective thoughts imputed to the protagonist).
The author did her homework researching this story about a sled dog who was just one of the pack facing poor odds against daunting weather and unrequiting expanses of blinding snow and ice. When the alpha dog loses the trail, and another refuses to lead, the team turns to Balto to bring them and their cargo safely to rest in Nome.
Perhaps Balto deserves an authentic, grown-up biography, but this one will serve in the meantime. It appears to be the definitive account.
A teacher in PA.......2000-05-03
This is an excellent book if you are interested in the Iditarod race in Alaska. The book helps young children understand the importance of perserverence and is a great introduction to history for the very young (6-8).A true story that inspires people to understand the bond between animals and people.

Both veterinary surgeons new to homoeopathy and dog owners with no specialized medical knowledge will find this a practical and handy guide to the use of homoeopathic medicine in the treatment of canine ailments.

Homeopathic Med. for Dogs.......2006-11-06
I bought this book to use as a reference. Some who don't understand homeopathy, find it hard to comprehend that what is used on humans can also be used on our four legged friends. With this I can show that this is what is needed and here is the verification
Have relied on this one for years!.......2005-10-16
We breed dogs in Germany and have relied on this book for years. It has helped many of our dogs. The information is easy to find and comprehensive.
It does help to read a general book on homeopathy first, but it is a great reference when it comes to every day issues.
Covers Wide Range of Canine Ailments.......2000-07-23
Like other books on homeopathy, this book is best used together with a comprehensive materia medica. It's important to keep in mind that the listed remedies are suggestions only and may or may not fit the individual patient's symptom picture. Having said that, this book covers a wider range of ailments than most books on veterinary homeopathy. The introduction to homeopathy section, however, is very brief and there is little information on taking a case and selecting the correct remedy, so this is not the best book for someone new to homeopathy (check out books by Dr. Don Hamilton or Dr. Christopher Day first).
In addition to the guide to canine ailments, there are descriptions of thirteen constitutional types, excerpts from readers' letters, and some interesting essays on veterinary homeopathy including one on homeopathic alternatives to vaccinations.
A book I couldn't live without.......2000-01-25
I actualy refer to the german original (12th edition) published in Stuttgart in 1998, supposing the english version has the same content.
This book has helped me and my chows overcome quite a few problems when I didn't feel comfortable with the sometimes "radical" solutions offered by my vet. A short introduction to the subject helps the newcomer to orientate himself - the rest is built up according to body regions, making it easy to find what you are looking for. A glossary of substances and a separate section on selected examples end this serious, yet simple reference work. I recommend it !
Book Description
Dogs have always been natural yogis, and their tranquility of mind, ability to be in the moment, and contented outlook are widely considered to be the result of their long and devoted practice of doga. Dogis Benny, Buster, and Cricket practiced in obscurity for years, perfecting their dogic principles. Now at last they reveal the powerful secrets of doga. Many of the movements and positions of doga can inspire and assist humans in their own yoga practice. Doga presents the major asanas or postures, from the Downward-Facing Dog to the relaxing Happy Puppy and restorative Pup's Pose. Each stretch is demonstrated by one of the dogis, with accompanying text to help people adapt positions to their own practice. Also included are breathing techniques such as the hot breath, or pant, and tips on practicing with your own dogi. Anyone who does yoga or owns a dog is sure to find inspiration in these pages. On the path to health and inner harmony, Doga shows the way.

Doggie Yoga.......2007-10-11
This was a relatively cute book, but please beware that it is not truly instructional and is not meant to teach one how to facilitate a Doggie Yoga class. This book would make a good gift for the yoga aficionado who also loves dogs and might be entertaining for a few minutes. I would have preferred to see a greater variety of dogs as well. However, I understand the author's vision in spotlighting only four in order to develop character. I would not pay full price for this book.
Witty book for hip dog owners.......2005-09-01
Quite witty book of photos of young dogs in poses which look like familar yoga poses. It has imaginary commentary from the dogs.
Dog owners who do yoga will bark with delight.
Interesting viewpoint.......2005-02-27
Dogs actually do breath correctly, humans don't unless taught. Dogs stretch when they sense the need, humans don't unless taught. Dogs are amazing to watch, there are many things innate to dogs (and most animals), that humans don't do, but probably should.
Breathing - Humans breath shallow inadequate, terse breaths. Why? Because we've forgotten how to breath correctly.
How do we learn to breath correctly? Well, at birth. Once born the baby should be placed on the mother's chest, before the cord is severed and taught to breath. There, feeling the breath come in and out of the mother, feeling the heart beat, the baby learns to breath. Most mothers will have to ensure THEY are breathing correctly to pass this Vital Information onto the babe.
Since dogs breath naturally, pups are brought close to the mother, umbilical chord usually intact and feel the breathing and the heartbeat and become one with the mother.
Okay... think about it. And that's precisely what this book does, it gets one thinking about things, that perhaps we normally wouldn't take the time nor have the inclination to discover.
I enjoyed the read, it was cute, informative and being a dog owner I could relate.
DOGA is great for Dog Lovers & Yoga fans!.......2004-10-23
This book is really great. I sent it to a friend along with the "DOGA" calendar ... she loved it! She loves dogs and she also does YOGA. You will love this book. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! This is the first time I have actually done a review but this book was well worth it!
Let me think... How can I exploit the yoga craze?.... Doga!.......2004-08-18
I picked up this book expecting it to be yet another crass attempt to exploit the ancient art and science of yoga for personal material gain and, well, I was pretty much right. I imagine this book being dreamed up by a yoga teacher thinking, "Hmmm... How can I make a name for myself in this yoga game and maybe squeeze out a couple bucks while I'm at it?" Perhaps I give too much credit to the author. Though the book contains some cute bits that doggie lovers will surely enjoy, "Doga" adds nothing to either the great bodies of yoga or pet literature. In fact, it may even detract from both. I give the book two stars because, who knows, maybe dogs will enjoy reading "Doga," or chewing it.

Customer Reviews:
Great information and very moving stories........2007-07-15
This was a great book with a great deal of useful information. My only caution is that you need a box of Kleenex when you read some sections...it is very moving. This book gives great insight into how a well trained dog can help with an Autistic child. It also gives useful information on how to train a dog to work with an autistic child but it is not a do it yourself book...professional help is needed.
Excellent Resource.......2007-05-15
I bought this book to help guide us through the process of possibly getting a dog to help our 4-year old son w/ autism. What I found is that this book is so beautifully written, touching on the very essence of living in a family with a child who has a disability. It's inspirational, heart-breakingly true, yet heart-warming and realistic. I highly recommend it for all parents or older siblings of family members with autism.
A Thoughtful Approach to Integrating Animals in the Lives of Special Needs Children.......2007-03-25
A thoughtful exploration of the benefits and challenges in the intergration of assistance dogs for children living with autism. I have worked with Patty over the last six months and have been impressed with her understanding of the necessary steps to help build a healthy relationship among children and their canine friend.

Soul Friends: Finding Healing With Animals
A Visionary Book..........2007-02-20
I just finished reading The Golden Bridge and wanted to put in a few words while it's still fresh. I feel this book is a great success on many different levels. Author Patty Dobbs Gross is clearly an expert in the areas of service dogs, including breeding, training, and raising. And her knowledge is supplemented by contributing authors that offer sections of expertise on various particulars regarding the use of service dogs.
The volume of useful information to be found in this book was extremely rewarding, but in addition to the usefulness of that, I was incredibly moved by her own personal story, which is woven through the book. Through her prose, she tells her own story of struggle, which slowly grows into finding her unique and special path. Her strength of character and resolve shine as beacons to those of us finding our own paths in life. Gross's determination to create something good out of the challenges that faced her and her family, and to succeed so well at it, is truly inspiring.
Ms. Gross, in telling her personal story, paints a very vivid and moving picture and writes in a very compelling way. I was totally drawn in, and literally didn't put the book down until I finished the last page.
I highly recommend this book for it's informative aspect, it's emotionally appealing story, and it's vision.

Book Description
"For many years, I have been a student of spirituality and states of consciousness. For many more years than that, I've been a student of dogs," says best-selling author Jean Houston, whose study of this subject is the basis of Mystical Dogs. Houston has spent a lifetime bridging the worlds of animals and humans, exploring a realm that pet owners have glimpsed and indigenous peoples have known for millennia. The author identifies dogs, with their deceptively uncomplicated, joyous, loving nature, as custodes animi, guardians of our souls. She shows how animals, particularly dogs, are often the best spiritual teachers. For example, in Houston's hands, a seemingly simple story, such as a man saying goodbye to his beloved dog, becomes a striking metaphor about personal and planetary transformation.

Amazing woman.......2007-01-22
This book could be life-changing for those people who believe that animals have powers beyond the simple realm of their daily reality. I was most impressed with her writing, her worldly experiences and her genuineness. I actually went on her website and listened to a conference she had that had been taped. WOW. This is one dynamic human being with a heart as big as Texas. I love dogs--always have--and she captures something about them that even I hadn't given them credit for. It's definitely not an easy read, however and you must pause, put the book down and reflect on her ideas.
Mystical Dogs is an astounding book.......2004-03-11
Jean Houston is one of the most remarkable figures in Humanistic Psychology and consciousness studies of the 20th and 21st century. This book is simply luminous and a great treasure. Anybody who seeks the spiritual path and/or adores four legged friends will love this book. The pictures of Jean and her dogs are also truly wonderful. Hats off to Jean and her brilliant and loyal canine friends.
An absorbing saga of metaphysical enlightenment.......2003-03-04
Mystical Dogs: Animals As Guides To Our Inner Life by Jean Houston is about the transcendental value of animal companionship in general, and the love of dogs in particular. Indeed, our animal companions can be the starting point to a mystical gateway and an awakened consciousness. An absorbing saga of metaphysical enlightenment and abiding memories for beloved animal companions, Mystical Dogs is enthusiastically recommended reading for New Age animal lovers.
Let's talk to the animals - more!.......2003-02-23
This book is a great gift for humanity.

I Know What You're Thinking . . . ........2003-01-24
You're thinking, "mystical dogs? Yeah. Right." You're thinking, "Forget dogs. Cats (hampsters, pigeons, nemotodes) rule." Or,"mystical what???" If so, you're apt not to be alone. There's a big "however" here: HOWEVER, Mystical Dogs is one read to hang your inner-child's hat on. The book boasts the intricate simplicity which hallmarks genius. Fact is, if you have, or have had, a canine buddy and know the joys, the wonders such kinship brings, you'll be revisiting a much-loved realm. If -- and there's that word again -- however, your idea of a dog coincides with a four-legged type that bummed a ride with Noah, strolled off the ark straight into your hydrangea bush, you will indeed be revisioning your untutored little perception. Chances are, when you read this book, you are going to go and, I might add, gleefully, to the dogs.
Fact is: Jean Houston has given us a gift. She has yanked spirituality off its high-falutin pedestal, framed it in compelling language and winsome anecdote. She has placed Spirit at eye-level. This vantage point lets us discern that which might otherwise elude us: numinous gleanings, transcendent knowings and ineffable intimations. Thanks to the author's lack of pretense, we readers become enlightened even as we encounter the dearest of creatures, the funniest of situations. Fact is: dogs, uh-huh, dogs (!) have something to teach us. Those unlikely teachings are, Houston demonstates, unsurpassed by human prayer or pilgrimage.

Book Description
They sought out the strange.
They investigated the inexplicable.
They had one hell of a hangover.
On an odyssey of oddities that would take them all to the very limits of their imagination (and inebriation), bestselling author Nick Redfern teamed up with professional monster-hunters Jonathan Downes and Richard Freeman. For six weeks in the summer of 2001, the intrepid-yet-hard-partying trio rampaged across the remote wilds of Great Britain in hot pursuit of werewolves, lake monsters, giant cats, ghostly devil dogs, and ape-men. Their adventures led them deep into ancient forests, into the dark corridors of a mansion hiding a wild man, and to the shores of the legendary Loch Ness -- along the way encountering all manner of curious characters, including witches, government agents, and eyewitnesses who claim to have seen monsters firsthand. And only at journey's end did the hard questions posed at the start of their quest begin to reveal some mind-bending answers. That monsters truly do exist in our world. And that we are responsible for their existence!
Whether you're seeking a glimpse into the bizarre reaches of reality, or just looking for a good time, Three Men Seeking Monsters is a uniquely gonzo trek with a trio of adventurers who pushed themselves to the edge -- and went right over it.

Customer Reviews:
You cannot say it's not entertaining.......2006-10-14
During the summer of 2001, Nick Redfern, a British ufologist and author, went on a six-week adventure together with his two friends Jonathan Downes and Richard Freeman from The Centre for Fortean Zoology, a British cryptozoological organization. Redfern was in the middle of moving to America, but his friends weren't going to allow him to leave without a last great adventure together. Initially they "only" planned on investigating a creature known as The Man Monkey of Ranton, but it soon became apparent that the British Isles hade many more mysteries for the adventurous trio. Accompanied by various punk rock and enormous quantities of beer the three companions traveled the countryside in a car they named The Mystery Machine and interviewed all sorts of people, ending up in one bizarre situation after the other.
After having had a strange encounter with a witch, spent a night in a mysterious mansion, searched for werewolves, monkey men, the Loch Ness monster, devil dogs, giant cats, and so on, something becomes clear to them. Is it possible that some, perhaps all, of those strange beings that are seen from time to time all over world have some sort of paranormal origin? Instead of being "normal" physical beings, is it possible that they're in fact psychic manifestations, who feed on emotional reactions of human beings and come from an alternative or parallel dimension? Perhaps. Perhaps not.
Hmm... does this sound a little too out there for you? Well, don't worry. This book is highly entertaining, nonetheless.
Because, even though the trio end up in bizarre situations and discuss freaky ideas, the level of discussion still remains both sober (except for the beer...) and reasonable. Each chapter begins with lyrics from a song by the Ramones and the dialogue is filled with great humor. It might not be the most scholarly book in the world, but it sure is entertaining.
So I'm really glad I got the chance to read it.
Scooby Doo-ish activities.......2005-10-27
This book is like sneaking into a graveyard at night, you find that, yes it is spooky, but nothing much exciting really occurs. I found the book to lack any revelation other than some tall tales I hadn't heard before, which Redfern seems to leave with the reader as the reward for buying his book. It's a light read and more about his two buddies hanging out with him drinking than any serious adventure. This would of been the type of adventure you probably would of liked to have had in college, so it's not unentertaining...but I would not see this as a must buy unless you feel Nick needs the donation.
A fun book.......2005-05-02
Whether you believe in monsters or not this is a very enjoyable book to read. I happen to like the Hunter S.Thompson school of writing and this book was a little gem.
A Rollicking Good Time For All.......2004-09-27
Mr. Redfern and his merrie band of British fortean eccentrics takes us on a journey the likes of which we have not seen since the days of Dr. Johnson sojourning to the north or the askew tales of Laurence Sterne. These blokes are the kind that you'd like to know for serious drinking and tale telling round a fireplace. Yet their historical research is sound, students of local fortean folklore will note. I find the tulpa theory neither "tired" nor overworked in throwing light on incidents of the unexplained. What Mr. Redfern & company do is synthesize the "passport to magonia' ideas of Jacque Vallee with the trickster/metamind theories of John Keel along with their own experiences while on this madcap road trip. The tulpa idea has merit and is worthy of further exploration. The cast of characters encountered in this work range from the frighteningly memorable to the freakish and pathetic. On the whole this is not a scholarly exploration of the paranormal, but if you're as weary as I am of anal retentive pontification or blind belief as with most paranormal books today, this is refreshing & fun.
Great read for adolescents... not so good for adults..........2004-08-01
A childhood friend bought this book for me purely out of nostalgia and I grudgingly read it over the course of a weekend.
As a kid, I really enjoyed reading monster and UFO books. Tales of Bigfoot and Yeti fascinated me. As I got older these sorts of books fell out of style with me, mainly because by the time I entered High School I had gained a fairly good grasp on the scientific process and skepticism.
Looking back I realize that my youthful fascination with this type of literature had more to do with an over all fascination with Science Fiction and Fantasy. I consider these books to be ?reality fantasy? ? completely unverifiable, yet spooky stories best to be read for the fun of it and not to be taken seriously.
The book puts forth the tired Tupla theory, which is that strange creatures and UFOs are not physical but rather are thought projections. As the book tells it, there is a realm of immaterial sprits all around us who somehow feed off our emotions by visual manifesting themselves as Aliens, Werewolves and Wild Men. It?s very contrived to say the least and ultimately causes the book to fail. Not once throughout the book does the author mention mental illness, hallucinogenic drugs or other more down to earth causes for some of the phenomena he recounts, although he does mention that some eye witnesses may have been influenced by works of fiction and over obsessive imaginations. Still, the author cannot escape painting himself into a corner of discredit due to a simple lack of believability.
What I enjoyed most about this book were the exact things I enjoyed about other Fortean style literature as a child: the chilling second hand accounts of strange sightings and events. Sadly, this book is only partly about historical accounts of Wild Men and Unexplained Big Cats. The majority of the book is an amateurish attempt at recounting drunken (and possibly drug induced) misadventures of a trio of English misfits.
At times, the book is very bloated as the author meanders off subject to relate a nightmare or other experience he or someone he knew had. Overall, the book could probably be cut to half the size and made infinitely more readable. I?ve personally read better self published works before and I?m led to wonder if the editor was asleep at the wheel on this one, or perhaps thought the readership wouldn?t be expecting too much anyway.
I give the book two stars instead of one because I think that young readers ? perhaps middle school age ? would enjoy it. Over all, the book isn?t too poorly written, although the author?s habit of starting each chapter off with a lyric from a Ramones song grew old quickly and flags him as having poor style.
