Cat Owners Vet Handbook.......2007-10-11
I'm not a 'big' book buyer but this one is worth it's weight on my book shelf. It's a good one for most of us that care deeply about our feline friends and need immediate answers concerning their health issues.
A GREAT BOOK.......2007-10-01

A vet at home.......2007-07-14
This is a great book. I have used it many times with my new kittens already. Not just a try to cure it yourself book, but explains things they can catch and helps decide whether a trip to the Dr. is needed. Whenever in doubt always go though to err on the side of caution. I will even add this to my vet tech textbooks, it will be a great help in my classes.
The best reference book.......2007-06-06
If you are doing any kind of cat rescue work THIS is the book you need! It is the best reference book I have come across, it is easy for the lay person to read and has just about every scenario you will come across as a rescuer. This has been my "Bible" for years and this updated version is even better than the last. It is especially helpful with orphaned kittens, telling you how much they should weigh, how much food they need and what you should expect developementally.
I can't recommend this book highly enough--I wish I could give it more than 5 stars!
very helpful........2007-05-07
I have 6 cats of my own, foster cats and kittens, and work with a no-kill cat shelter and this book is a savior! So extensive, one of the best.

Very Good, Very Helpful For New Bengal Owners!!!!.......2006-04-15
A lot of information that hepls new bengal owners, I would also recomend Guide to Owning a Bengal Cat by Jean S. Mill.
Average Bengal Book.......2006-01-17
The book has some good pictures and some good information, but some is contradictory. For example, if you buy premium cat food your paying for advertising, etc., but the next sentence reads that when buying cat food, you get what you pay for. Confusing. Otherwise the book tells the positives of owning a Bengal, not the drawbacks.
Basic Bengal Info........2006-01-02
I found this book to be full of basic cat information and less Bengal specific information than I would have liked. It did help to describe the breed standards on a basic level. If you are looking for a quality Bengal and want all the details, more research is absolutely necessary.
Excellent book on Bengals.......2005-08-03
This is a very informative book on the Bengal cat breed. Many wonderful photos too. Very helpful to a new Bengal owner -- highly recommended.
Bengal .......2004-09-21
I enjoyed the book but was a little disappointed as I expected it to be much more detailed. I thought it was more of a beginners book to cats. A great book if you have never had a cat or done any research on bengal cats.

Fun To Read.......2007-06-15
I read the book from cover to cover - it's an easy read for an informational book. I used it for a good overview and also have a more detailed "reference" book that I refer to if specific problems arise with my cat.
A Rare Success!.......2007-01-25
I have come accross many cat books, dog books, and dog or cat books that are written in a funny style. This is one of those rare books that actually manages to succeed in everything it aspires to!
Not only is this book recent (2004), inexpensive, and hillariously written and illustrated, but it has all of the basic information a cat owner would need in an extremely USEFUL format. Man, how I wish I had this book when I first got my cat! It covers all of the questions other books could easily overlook, such as how to hold a cat, proper grooming, socialization, etc.... The format is just so... organized, it's easy to get an idea of where everything is, and the funny mechanical manual format is brilliantly integrated so that it does not interfere with either readability or clarity.
The only deficiency of this book is the lack of detailed medical information. This is not a bad thing in itself, though, as it allows for a shorter, clearer book. I would strongly recommend you to also purchase a veterinarian-written guide to cat health that covers all of the common medical problems. This would allow you access to information about vaccinations, what qualifies as an emergency or needs veterinary attention, and at-home solutions to medical problems without constantly questioning your vet. Such books include "Guide to a Healthy Cat" by Elaine Wexler-Mitchell, DVM (great, recent, inexpensive book - the only lack is that it doesn't go into as much depth as it should because it tries to be easy to understand), "Cat Owner's Home Veterinary Handbook" (a classic, in-depth book about almost every problem you might face - but not very up-to-date as it was written over 10 years ago), or "The Doctor's Book of Home Remedies for Dogs and Cats" (excellent in so many ways, but does not go into problems not treatable at home except to tell you when to take the animal to the vet).
Informative and Funny!.......2007-01-09
I picked this book up because I am a cat lover. When I started reading the book I found myself laughing as well as learning things I never knew about the care and training of my cat. It is formatted to read similiar to a automobile manual, which I thought was very humorous as well as a neat way to organize the information. I think it is a great guide for anybody who wants to learn more about the care and detail of having a feline friend.

Customer Reviews:
Great for this price.......2006-08-27
This is a very good reference book for anyone who is buying their first purebred kitten. There is some background information on Ragdolls, advice on finding reputable breeders, care instructions etc. I have found that most cat books are full of fluff and outdated information, but this book I found actually practical and useful. I loved the color photos. Yes, it is a short book and does not give every bit of information about the breed, and if that is what you are looking for then you will not like this book. But what can you expect from a book of this price and size?
BTW, a reviewer below is a bit mistaken. Not nearly all breeders insist upon killed virus for innoculations, only some do.
Pretty little book........2003-12-05
This is an attractive small soft covered book with many beautiful color photo's of Ragdolls and cute illustrations by Tana Monsalve. Unfortunatly, as a previous reviewer wrote, most of the information here could pertain to any kind of cat. It's generally a domestic cat care book; however, there's a short but interesting "how to" chapter on Cat Shows.
I also thought that there should have been diagrams or pictures displayed along with the description of Colors and Patterns. I'm just discovering Ragdolls myself and the myriad of colors and patterns in this particular breed of cat can be confusing to a novice.
It's Not About Any Ragdolls I've Ever Known.......2001-06-13
This is a generic cat book. Substitute Siamese,American Curl,Domestic Shorthair, or the name of any other breed of cat for the word "Ragdoll" wherever it appears and you've got a "handbook" for that breed. And not a particularly good one, either! Some information is missing or incorrect. For example, there is no explanation concerning the use of killed virus for innoculations-something that every Ragdoll breeder I know insists upon. Missing is information on the slower physical maturation of Ragdolls, that they often do not attain their adult size until three or four years of age and that they remain kittens much longer than some other breeds. The Ragdoll is a unique breed (yes, yes,I know- all cats are unique;however, this book is supposed to be about Ragdolls.),but nowhere in this book do I find any references to the special personality, behaviors, and quirks of the Ragdoll. (As I write this my year old Ragdoll male,AJ,is sitting on the table next to the computer, wondering why I use the word quirks. It's meant in a loving way,my "little" boy.)Actually, this book would be a great deal more interesting, informative, and helpful if the author had consulted AJ before writing. I bought this book hoping to gain insights into the Ragdoll cat-a breed I adore. And I certainly did learn something--how to return a book that was not terribly useful or complete.
Ragdoll Cats.......2000-09-14
Ragdoll Cats Everything about Purchase and the "Guide to owning a Ragdoll Cat are both highly recommended reading if you own or want to own a ragdoll cat. Most complete books I have found anywhere. Thank you Amazon.com..
Great Pictures! Best Ragdoll Cat Book Ever!!!!!.......1999-05-22
I thoroughly enjoyed Ragdoll Cats : Everything About Purchase, Care, Nutrition, Health Care, Behavior, and Showing (Complete Pet Owner's Manual). The pictures are wonderful! It was terrific to see so many pictures of traditional Ragdolls. I have hoped for a Ragdoll book that wasn't so focused on the breed's history and breeding but on the pleasure of having a Ragdoll. Readers will find the manual very helpful. I especially enjoyed the author's opinion on non-professional breeding. This is a must-have for every Ragdoll fan!P.S. On page 84 is my Ragdoll--Supreme Grand Champion Dixiedolls China.

Helpful Information.......2007-01-19
My daughter recently adopted a kitten and this book was quite helpful to her in caring for the new pet. She had many questions that were answered and she constantly refers to it when situations arise that she needs assistance. This book is great for new parents of kittens.
This covers it all for Cat Lovers!.......2003-01-04
I learned more than I ever thought possible regarding the care of cats. A terrific book, and my only regret is that it was not available some sixty years ago when I started my love affair with cats. I am doubly impressed that the Humane Society of the Unted States has endorsed this terrific owners manual. My hats off to Arden Moore along with thanks for writing such an informative book for all cat owners.
Good, but a bit over the top..........2002-09-07
There is some very valuable advice on how to deal with your kitten. I immediately stopped playing the foot under the covers game with my kitten in order to discourage her from attacking my toes. There are sensible suggestions on how to say "no" to your kitten. And I'm anticipating a move in the next few months, and I think Moore's suggestion to rub a wet towel on your kitten and then rub the towel on the walls of the new house, so that she'll recognize her own scent, will work. On the other hand Moore thinks you ought to keep a first aid kit for one cat that would easily fill the needs of a family of five, she suggests cutting the handles off of paper bags so that kitty won't get herself strangled in them, she suggests making your own scratching post, and gives advice on how to make several toys that pretty much amount to ones you can buy or glorified versions of regular items (socks, a belt from an old robe) that are sure to bring out kitty playfulness without the elaborate Martha Stewart like construction. I was also confused by some of the eating strictures. One table says kittens can't eat dry food until 12 weeks, but the text has kittens eating dry food much earlier. Moore seems to make light of lactose intolerance, and among her kitty treats includes scrambled eggs with margarine and cottage cheese!!! And her kitty chowder seems more like a human treat to me. Counterpointing the interesting suggestion to give your kitten a small piece of raw tuna as an alternative or addition to brushing are chapters on command training, new age therapies and kitty massage. This is fine and cuddly, though I doubt I'll teach my kitten to do much more than sit, if that, and I'm not taking her for acupuncture. This primer is written not so much by a cat lover as a cat fanatic. (Though I admit that if you're going to be a fanatic, it may as well be of cats.) Still I prefer the more practical down to earth advice of Cats for Dummies, than some of the outlandish, occasionally preposterous, cat adulation techniques of the Kitten Owner's manual. Then again, I am going to try the kitty massage.
very impressive.......2001-09-10
I have been a cat owner for over 7 years and there was alot in the book that I was amazed at. I never knew you could train your cat to speak and things. I was able to follow the guide and now my cat speaks! It took alot of treats tho!!!
Cant wait til her next book comes out.
A lifesaver.......2001-07-17
Arden Moore's "The Kitten Owner's Manual" is a highly informative, clear and often entertaining answer book THAT ACTUALLY works. So often I have turned to a pet book to help me care for my new kitten and I've come away confused and at a lost -- for ideas and a few bucks. But with this book, my questions were answered about my kitten's destructive habits, its finicky diet and its nervous behavior whenever strangers come into the home. It's a simple and very helpful book that gave me the solutions I needed.

MAINE COONS.......2007-09-26
MY CAT IS A MIX BUT ABOUT 75% MNCOON. THIS BOOK DID EXPLAIN ALOT OF QUIRKS AND BRED IN HABITS I NOW SEE IN MINE. THEY ARE CRAZY CREATURES.
VERY INFORMATIVE AND PICS GALORE,THANKS-LBSMITH
Dinks report.......2006-07-10
I found this informative and well rounded. Fun, not stuffy--with lots of pictures. For this price, a must-have!
A good short book on Maine Coon cats.......2002-10-21
This is a good introduction to Maine Coon cats. Mostly, this is a "care and feeding of" book that could apply to any cat, which is what this book is really for. If you are new to cat ownership and have a Maine Coon, this will get you started.
We have Maine Coon rescue cats and we don't plan to breed any cats (preferring to adopt orphans--there's a glut of cats out there.) But if you were planning to breed Maine Coons, you surely would need a more comprehensive book than this slim volume.
However, if you just want some general background about the history, pictures of coat colors and information about the general qualities of this breed, this book is just fine. The most valuable page is actually in the back, describing various illnesses, with a black and white drawing and description of a cat "not doin' right", which is how a cat subtly tells you it is feeling sick. We caught our cat "not doin' right" and she was actually on the point of being seriously ill. We caught it in time--thanks to that helpful description --cats are sometimes not terribly expressive, purring even in pain and perking up if their beloved owners are around.
Maine Coon cats is a pretty good book.......2002-03-29
I liked the book. It's a good book for people who don't know a lot about the maine coon cat breed. I found out several things I didn't know. Yes the end is a little generic, but it is only talking about how to take care of a cat, which would be generic. I think it's a good book for first time Maine Coon cat owners, such as myself.
Personalized Greeting Card of a Cat Book.......2001-02-08
"Maine Coon Cats" is one of a series of cat books published by Barron's. It has been 'personalized' by inserting the breed name 'Maine Coon' into the title and various other places in the text. Most of text is about cats in general, but all of the book's photographs display big, fuzzy Maine Coons. And there are some specifics about this very special breed - the cost of a show kitten vs. 'just a pet', a short history of the breed, etc. We own a small Maine Coon cattery ('JustThisOnce' Cattery) with five current residents (if you don't count the humans). For a more specific book on this native American breed, I'd recommend "This is the Maine Coon Cat" by Sharyn P. Bass. The photographs are mainly black and white (and grainy), but the text is much more specific to Coonies, especially if you plan to show. I learned from Bass's book that our Maine Coons aren't unique in the way they scoop water out of their dish with a big, hairy paw and then drink it. Evidently, this is one of the breed traits that got Maine Coons mistaken for raccoons in the first place!
I don't want to turn you away from Barron's "Maine Coon Cats - A Complete Owners Manual". It contains very good generic information about raising cats, and the photographs are really lovely. It just has that 'mass produced' feel about it.
Product Description
These handsome cats are noted for having extremely good natures, as well as for their handsome, thick and glossy coats. Here is advice on purchase, feeding, health care, and keeping a happy Himalayan. Paperback / 96 Pages / 6 1/2 x 7 7/8 / 1996
Customer Reviews:
Good if you have never owned a cat before.......2005-03-19
The book was well written. Chapters are informative for general information on keeping and caring for cats. however, the book was so general that i think they had a word document formated so all they had to do was insert the word Himalayan before the word cat throughout the book.
the only specifics in this book related to Himalayans is the pedigree origination, and only in very simple terms, and grooming long haired cats and is generally applicable to any long hair cat.
however, the book is loaded with really pretty color pictures of a diverse assortment of Himalayans.
If you want a picture book with Himalayan cat pics and general cat information this is the book for you.
If you are a breeder or looking to show Himies definitley look elsewhere, or you will be frustated that you spent the time and money on this book.
Simple & Straight forward.......2003-10-31
I recently bought a flame point breeder/show quality himalayan kitten and was very interested in what the book had to say.
The book is very informative and straight forward in telling the origins of how himmies came about, how to care, treat, nurse the cats.
It covers kittens behaviours, sexual behaviour, guides you in how to choose a breeder and questions to ask, how to breed and show your himmy so all in all, it's a pretty informative manual with glossy pics of some beautiful himmies and regular black/white illustrations.
You won't be disappointed!
A Terrific Book!.......2002-02-17
I really enjoyed this book -- it's well written and helpful for both new and experienced cat lovers. I've owned Himmies for many years and all of the advice is useful and accurate. Every chapter is packed with good information; I particularly liked the chapters on grooming, nutrition, and understanding cat behavior. And the price is certainly right compared to other breed books!
Useless for breeders/exhibitors /pet owners.......2001-12-24
This book is so generic it is hopelessly useless. Save the [amt] orcat food or grooming supplies-you're going to need them. Even the chapter on grooming is useless. Follow the bathing instructions in this book to get a matted cat at the end. A little advise here for free: Do not rub the fur! Oh Boy! The instructions for blow drying! Blow drying a Himalayan is an art in itself and these instructions are worse than useless, might as well air dry the cat (Don't of course). The advise on choosing a cat is even worse. More free advise: Don't choose one without checking out the current breed standards - NW Region Himalayan Show cat exhibitor
Himalayan Cats.......2001-05-20
I purchased this book because I bought a Himalayan kitten. I have to wait one more week before she's able to leave her mother. The book was very helpful by telling me what I should and shouldn't do with a new kitten. The book gave alot of information about how to care for the cat thoughtout her whole life, not just another kitten book. I will not be selling it because I think I will be looking for it though out the years. It also had diffirent chapters explain what to do about breeding, grooming, and other things I needed to know. It is also written very clearly and easy to read. I was very happy with the book.

Customer Reviews:
basic.......2007-04-11
You probably already know more about Persians than the book writer himself.
Disappointing.
Better to spend more and really Learn about Persian cats.
persian cats new edition is entertaining.......2006-05-15
This new edition is much more user friendly! It's filled with great information on Persians, like what specific combs and brushes to use. How to give a bottom bath. The lion cut. Not much on genetics, other than genetic disorders, since you can get that anywhere.. And the description of a show hall is right on! And things anyone can use like introducing a new kitten, breaking bad litter pan habits.
Very disappointing book.......2003-08-22
Having recently purchased a Persian I thought this book would be a great place to start - how wrong I was! Only 2 pages dedicated to their behaviour and understanding them so not much use at all to me really. Also it is important to note that (apparently) European Persians have a tendency to have very different personalities to US ones, also in the US Persians are less likely to be 'extreme' (i.e. flat faced).
No information at all on special the dietry requirements of a Persian(in the UK, premium foods such as Hills, Jameswellbeloved etc are recommended by the experts, but no mention of this in book).
Lots of breeder information which is great if you want to breed but it only relates to the USA. Probably a book worth 2 out of 5 in you live in the states, but for UK or European readers i'd give this book a miss.
Not very Persian focused.......2000-02-02
All the information in there I can find it in a cats magazine. VERY basic information and quite obvious.
Good GENERAL cat book, a little disappointed,though........1999-09-16
I bought the book looking for specific information about Persians. What I got was a little information about Persians and a lot of information about cats in general. I guess if I were interested in breeding or showing, this might be the book to buy, but for a simple cat fancier, it doesn't do it for me.

Here is information on selection, feeding, grooming and generally keeping a healthy and well-adjusted Siamese cat. Fifty striking, full-color photos and instructive line drawings reveal the beauty of this breed. One chapter is dedicated to understanding Siamese behavior.

IF YOU ONLY HAD ONE SIAMESE CAT BOOK (GOD FORBID!).......2006-11-18
A MODERN KNOWLEDGIBLE CONCISE RESOURCE FOR HUMANS OWNED BY SIAMESE CATS. BEAUTIFULLY DONE PHOTOS MAKE LEARNING ABOUT YOUR CAT AN ESTHETIC EXPERIENCE.
THE "COVER CAT" IS A HIT, AS WE ARE OWNED BY A LILAC POINT MALE. FROM OUR EXPERIENCE, IT IS TRUE THAT THE LILACS ARE THE MOST QUIET AND AFFECTIONATE OF THE SIAMESE BREED.
Nice Book.......2006-11-05
The book 'Siamese Cats (Complete Pet Owner's Manual)' is a good basic book on Siamese Cats. I was pleased with the quality of paperback edition and love the photo illustrations.
Good information!.......2005-12-13
Talked about different types of siamese the shape of their heads, colors. Also how their personalities are different from other types of cats. They are quite chatty. The book had some good information on Siamese and regular cat care.
Good General Cat Manuel.......2005-09-19
The material presented is well-presented for the average lay reader. It's a general over-view of Siamese cats, with a fairly extensive section on breeding.
I would have preferred for Collier's book to have dealt more with behavior and training. The two subjects receive some attention, just not enough.
Good starter book.......2005-07-08
This book is a good introduction to Siamese cats. My version is somewhat dated as it still recommends FIP and FeLV vaccinations. It also doesn't describe the risks of rabies vaccines. I've yet to find a really good reference book for comprehensive feline health information. Cats often exhibit much more subtle symptoms than dogs. I also would like to find better information on issues relative to purebreds. The Cornell Book of Cats is a good next book, but I'm still searching for an advanced layperson's book.
