Picking up where the extraordinarily interesting I, Claudius ends, Claudius the God tells the tale of Claudius' 13-year reign as Emperor of Rome. Naturally, it ends when Claudius is murdered--believe me, it's not giving anything away to say this; the surprise is when someone doesn't get poisoned. While Claudius spends most of his time before becoming emperor tending to his books and his writings and trying to stay out of the general line of corruption and killings, his life on the throne puts him into the center of the political maelstrom.
Book Description
Robert Graves begins anew the tumultuous life of the Roman who became emporer in spite of himself. Captures the vitality, splendor, and decadence of the Roman world at the point of its decline.

An Enduring & Engaging Historical Yarn.......2007-10-03
Being neither particularly well read nor well versed in history, I came to this work after listening to an audio tape of "I, Claudius." I had never heard of Robert Graves before, but found both books well-written and entertaining. Not wishing to repeat what has already been noted in the longer reviews posted here, I offer a few observations that may be of interest to those considering reading Claudius The God:
First, Graves is an exceptionally good story teller. Speaking through the character of Claudius, Graves weaves an abundance of minor tales, presumably based on historical sources, through the major story line. Some of these minor tales provide added details that support the characters and plot development, and some serve as pure diversions. But nearly all are crisply told, many are humorous or tragic, and many contain surprising historical details. Gratuitous physical descriptions of scenes and characters were refreshingly absent; these are sparkling tales that might be swapped over the water-cooler. Overall the storytelling style is a bit reminiscent of Gabriel Garcia Marquez, although not quite as masterful.
Second, Claudius alludes to events and characters from the birth of Christianity in a way that smells of a pro-Christian bias. There's nothing wrong with having a pro-Christian bias, but Claudius would not have had one, and so the narrator's credibility is undermined slightly. These allusions are sparse and the bias subtle, so the overall impact is not too distracting. Perhaps in the same vein, the description of events, attitudes and mores of the characters will not leave the reader nostalgic for the Roman Empire, nor admiring of the main character. There is certainly no pro-pagan bias operating here. Claudius is presented in a sympathetic way, but in the end does not behave heroically. Such are the demands of history.
Third, the writing style is not as compressed as we are used to with most modern authors, whom adhere more closely to the Elements of Style. Graves' style is a bit antiquated in ways probably not intended to convey a Claudian voice. For example, sentences were sometimes longer than necessary and hard to follow. Given the age of the work and its many strong points, this stylistic weakness can be readily forgiven.
If you like historical fiction, try Robert Graves. If you are like me, you will be both entertained and educated.
Good Follow-up to My Favorite All-time Book.......2007-10-02
This book is the sequel to "I Claudius" which is my all-time favorite book. Though not quite up to that first book in intrigue and overall flow, it is still a great book in its own right.
There is a lot of rich descriptions of battles undertaken by the now Emperor Claudius that stretch for many pages. Also, Claudius has to deal with the betrayal of his friend Herod as well as his scheming wife Messalina (along with her debaucheries) while Claudius' advisor Pallus is also trying to usurp him.
Claudius' grand scheme to eliminate the monarchy and restore the Republic spawns the evil Nero (though he is not quite as evil as Caligula). Should not be missed!
At least as great as "I, Claudius".......2007-09-05
I wouldn't recommend reading this work without its predecessor, which also deserves (and has duly received) many five-star reviews. If you loved "I, Claudius," you should definitely read this second part, which also abounds with larger-than-life characters, endless webs of plotting and scheming, and Robert Graves' narrative brilliance. But I wouldn't think of the two works as forming one big novel in two parts. "Claudius the God" is a very different work, and maybe even a better novel than "I, Claudius." Though longer in length, it covers fewer events: don't expect the same breathless succession of bloody twists and turns.
The BBC series dedicated fewer than a fourth of the episodes to this book, and for good reason: "Claudius the God" is chiefly concerned with the emperor's approach to the challenges of ruling the empire, and Robert Graves takes his time with this task. Slowing down from the intrigue-driven rhythm of "I, Claudius," Robert Graves beautifully conveys the fatality of Claudius' journey, from the excitement of his early idealistic days as a ruler bent on restoring the Republic to the last years of his reign. The book is full of nuanced emotion and even contains some surprisingly lyrical passages, which would have been quite out-of-place in its predecessor. The last few chapters are beautiful and tragic, in a way "I, Claudius" never attempts to be, as the old emperor comes face-to-face with the immutable fate of Rome and the absurdity of his own role as Caesar. Seen as a true tragedy, this novel is a real success.
Other cool elements include a brilliantly paced glance at early Christianity from Claudius' perspective, and the unpredictable and fascinating character of Herod Agrippa. Though much more complex and likeable, he electrifies (and occasionally dominates) the story as powerfully as Livia does in "I, Claudius." Messalina adds further spice, intrigue (more sexual, less bloody, than Livia), and an unexpected touch of pathos to the book. This novel is also much richer than its predecessor in its evocation of political and military maneuvers, since the management of the empire is the central foundation of the plot.
Overall, both books are brilliant. But if "I, Claudius" is lots of fun (more fun, technically speaking, I suppose, than "Claudius the God"), this book raises more questions, develops more themes, and ultimately tells a much richer story: the tragic story of what boundless power does to a man who never wanted it.
Absolutely brilliant!.......2007-07-10
I Claudius and its sequel Claudius the God are I think some of the most brilliant historical novels that I've read: informative, gripping, done with just the right flavour of setting and intentionality thrown in.
I also think they've been a bit underrated - I would say Claudius the God is at least as good as I Claudius. However the two books serve different purposes. Whilst the first describes the machinations and cruelties of the Caesars from the outside, this book does it brilliantly from within. You need to read one to appreciate the other and it is together that they present a cogent worldview. This novel makes us sympathise and empathise with Claudius but it undeniably also makes us see that from a certain perspective there is no essential difference between an "enlightened" autocrat like Claudius and a mad "tyrant" like Caligula.
Graves recreates the setting wonderfully: not only in terms of historical fact but we can see how the society influenced even a "benevolent" one like Claudius to do some hairy things. And it all reads like the most colourful fairy tale despite its historical accuracy, because both in content and presentation this novel is amazing.
Not as captivating as I, Claudius, but still good........2007-06-28
I, Claudius was one of the finest books I've ever read. Unfortunately, some of the magic is lost when Claudius changes from observer to actor.
Book Description
Ruby Oliver is 15 and has a shrink. She knows it’s unusual, but give her a break—she’s had a rough 10 days. In the past 10 days she:
lost her boyfriend (#13 on the list),
lost her best friend (Kim),
lost all her other friends (Nora, Cricket),
did something suspicious with a boy (#10),
did something advanced with a boy (#15),
had an argument with a boy (#14),
drank her first beer (someone handed it to her),
got caught by her mom (ag!),
had a panic attack (scary),
lost a lacrosse game (she’s the goalie),
failed a math test (she’ll make it up),
hurt Meghan’s feelings (even though they aren’t really friends),
became a social outcast (no one to sit with at lunch)
and had graffiti written about her in the girls’ bathroom (who knows what was in the boys’!?!).
But don’t worry—Ruby lives to tell the tale. And make more lists.

Can't Get More Real Than This.......2007-07-06
Ruby is having panic attacks. Her boyfriend has broken up with her, none of her friends are speaking with her, her ride to school won't take her anymore, and her parents are sure she is feeling suicidal or anorexic. Welcome to the story of The Boyfriend List by E. Lockhart, a masterful look inside the life of a teenage girl. This girl is every girl. Reading this book was like looking back at parts of my past, and it was amazing and painful to take the journey with her.
Lockhart writes truthfully on the way a girl thinks about boys. Ruby reveals pieces of her life one bit at a time. Her therapist asks her to create a boyfriend list: a list of every guy she has liked, dated, thought about dating, kissed, or had a special relationship with. Ruby isn't sure how this is going to help her solve her immediate problem: getting her boyfriend back and getting life back to normal. But as she examines each boy on the list, Ruby may discover she's not the victim she thinks she is.
Lockhart is spot on. Ruby is like a poster child for the things women do to screw up their lives. We fall for a guy, and when he doesn't end up being prince charming, what do we do? We beg, plead, cajole, manipulate, and lower ourselves--do anything but the thing we should do, pack our bags and move on. I wanted to be hard on her, but she is so dang sympathetic it's impossible.
I think this book has it all: teenage angst, unhealed wounds, a journey of self-discovery, a lot of pain, and also hope for the future. Also, I think most girls would admit they could relate to at least one of the stories in this book.
Here are things I have done that Ruby did:
Wait by the phone for a guy to call
Allow myself to be a victim of heartbreak
Flirt with one of my friend's boyfriends
Not be honest with myself about my motives
Kiss a guy to make myself feel better
Feel tremendous pain at betrayal
Not take action to change my future
I have to hand it to Ruby, though, she does make progress eventually, as everyone must if they want to heal. As I was reading this book, I was thinking it was similar to the book/movie High Fidelity. In that story, the male protagonist tries to discover the answer to the age-old question "Why does this always happen to me?" by looking back on his 5 most painful break-ups. Like Ruby, he even asks some of the women directly, "Why did you break up with me?" In each case, Rob discovers it wasn't just because he was unlovable or ugly, but rather a case of the wrong time or a misunderstanding or some such thing.
E. Lockhart has a great future as a writer, and I recommend this book highly to any teenage girl from age 14 and up.
~*~Great, Funny, Can't Put Down Read!!!!!~*~.......2007-05-09
The Boyfriend List is a wonderful book that is the outcome of Ruby Olver's assignment for her therapist. You can just imagine how funny it is. You will fall in love with the character Ruby as soon as you start reading. You see a little bit of yourself in her, whether it's her glasses, her quirky behavior, or her love for...of course..BOYS! It's a great book that any teenage girl can relate to. You will literally LAUGH OUT LOUD when reading this book... so make sure your not reading it in front of a crowd of people or else they will think your weird as you laugh outloud by yourself....(I have experienced this when I read what Hutch said to Nora about her outfit..LOL)! ANYWAYS....it's a terriffic book and you should definitely read it! O yes and a shout out to the author: GREAT JOB!!!! =)
The Boyfriend List .......2007-04-04
The Boyfriend List is a great bookfor teenagers. It is a romance novel that leaves you reading more. When you first pick up this book and start reading you will find yourself wantingmore and more just to find out what happens next. I recommend this book to teenage s who like romance comedys. Ruby is the main character. She is like every normal teenage ;she loves boys, has to struggle through high school, and figure out who her friends are. Ruby had a boyfriend (Jackson Clarke) but he broke up with her to be with her best friend, Kim. So when Kim goes on vacation Ruby makes sure she talks to Jackson. After an ordeal with Jackson, Ruby starts to have panic attacks. Her over protective rush her to a physiatrist to try and find out what is going on in their daughter's life. She then meets doctor Z. who becomes Ruby's faithful physiatrist. Doctor Z. makes her write the boyfriend list to try and get to the bottom of Ruby's panic attacks. The boyfriend list is a list of all the guys Ruby has ever liked or they liked her. Fifteen guys made up the list, some of them she would rather not talk about. A few of the guys who managed to make up the list were Billy Krespin, Ben Moi, and Finn Murphy. Tommy Hazard is the guy that every wants to know. He is kind, sweet, and cute. This is an awesome book and when you read it you will never be bored with it. I loved every page of this book! I recommend that teen s read this book. Don't forget to read the sequel- The Boy Book: A Study of Habbits and Behaviors, Plus Techniques for Taming Them.
An entertaining story, with dead-on details about high school life.......2007-03-21
The Boyfriend List is the story of several months in the life of high school sophomore Ruby Oliver. They are angst-filled months, featuring a harsh dumping of Ruby by her first-ever boyfriend, and subsequent social mis-steps on her part that caused her to:
1. Lose her close friends;
2. Become a social leper;
3. Be widely considered a slut in her small pond of a Seattle prep school; and
4. Start having panic attacks
The panic attacks result in Ruby (aka "Roo") being sent to see a shrink, Dr. Z. The story is told in bits and pieces, moving backwards and forwards in time, as Ruby examines what happened, and why. The Boyfriend List of the title (also used for chapter titles), refers to a list that Dr. Z. asks Roo to prepare of all of the boys that she's ever had any kind of romantic interaction with (dates, crushes, gifts left in lockers, etc.). Of course the mere existence of the list leads to problems, too, but you'll have to read the book for the details.
The audio version works quite well for this story. The text was apparently edited slightly, because Ruby occasionally will refer to "this story that you're listening to", instead of what I presume is "this story that you're reading" in the printed version. It feels like a long phone conversation with a new best friend, in which she tells a story filled with classic high-school drama. The narrator (Mandy Siegfried) sounds youthful, without being annoyingly girlish.
Ruby is a fully 3-dimensional character. She loves her slightly eccentric parents. She is, without much comment, a vegetarian. She buys clothes from vintage shops. She's insecure, and she makes foolish mistakes. She moons around after boys, on the slightest provocation, but is happiest hanging out with her girlfriends. She talks too much when she's nervous. She likes narrow-ruled notebooks. She feels real.
And the story feels real, too. I was humiliated for Ruby at her low points, and wondered how she could face school in the morning. But I also nodded my head, and laughed with her at some of her insights. There's a description in which she likens kissing a boy she doesn't find attractive (as part of a spin-the-bottle/7-minutes-in-heaven game) to going to the dentist. It's hilarious. There are many references to body parts and sex, though nothing too advanced actually happens with Ruby. She's refreshingly open and curious, with an entertaining voice.
Of all the books I've read, this one most made me reminisce about my own junior high and high school experiences. It's not that my experiences were the same as Ruby's, but E. Lockhart has so exactly captured what it's like to be a girl of that age--uncertain about what boys are thinking, having disagreements with friends over trust, and thinking about relative levels of popularity. The details are dead on.
One other nice thing about the book is that talking with Dr. Z. does help Roo to identify some negative behavior patterns in herself, and to start taking tiny steps towards resolution. There's no big drama over this--just small, incremental insights and improvements. The book touches on issues related to self-esteem, body image, forgiveness, and treating friends with respect, but it touches on them very lightly.
In summary, The Boyfriend List is an entertaining read, with strong characterization (at least of Ruby, the others are necessarily more remote to the reader). I think that many teen girls will find Ruby's experiences believable and, perhaps, reassuring (if Ruby could survive her humiliations, surely readers can endure the emotional traumas that high school dishes out on a regular basis). I think that adult readers who were once teenage girls will enjoy it, too, as a bit of a trip down memory lane (though with modern details). I highly recommend The Boyfriend List, and I can't wait to get my hands on the sequel, The Boy Book.
A slightly longer version of this book review was originally published on my blog, Jen Robinson's Book Page, on March 20, 2007.
great teen voice.......2007-02-09
Ruby Oliver has to start seeing a shrink at age 15 after the worst 10 days of her life. She did something "suspicious" with a boy, lost all her friends, and all her semi-friends, became a social outcast, and had a panic attack. After the panic attack, Ruby's mom starts making her go see Dr. Z. Dr. Z in turn forces Ruby to make a list of all her boyfriends, almost-boyfriends, could-have-been-boyfriends, and wanted-to-be-boyfriends. At first the therapy sessions are cathartic and Ruby is working out her problems, even if the other kids at school are still avoiding her. Then her "Boyfriend List" gets discovered, and suddenly people think she's an über-slut, even though some of the boys are from second grade. Will Ruby ever gain back her reputation, and her friends? Ruby's voice is incredibly real, and the pain she goes through is easily identifiable as realistic high school drama. And the footnotes sprinkled throughout help, as well.

Customer Reviews:
There are much better books out there.......2006-03-02
Hmmm....if you're a member of the conservative Christian right you might like this one. However, I highly recommend "Capitate Your Kids" for a great guide to teaching your teen to be financially frugal and smart.
Money Matters Gets a 5 Star Rating.............2005-07-21
Good tool for teaching both Christian & Non Christian Teens about money. Easy to understand, includes examples and step by step instructions. We used this for a Money Matters Workshop and our teens thought it was great.
This is a religious based book.......2004-08-25
I think it is important to point out a fact that Amazon leaves off in their description of the book. The author, Larry Burkett, is the founder and president of Christian Financial Concepts, Inc., a ministry dedicated to teaching God's principles for financial management.
This is obviously a big selling point of the book to a great many people.
However, it is something that people just browsing for a good financial book and workbook for their teens might not realize. For some of those people, it would not be what they are looking for.
I think Amazon is doing a great disservice to not make this very clear.
Sending teens out into the world with a clear understanding of finances and financial responsibility is very important.
If a biblical bent to finances suits your beliefs and lifestyles, take a look at this book.
If this aspect does not appeal to you, you would be better off looking elsewhere.
Religious Brainwash.......2004-06-19
This book has contents that speculate with the bible concept of money, and has subliminal christian messages for teens. Is a teen brainwasher, intercalating financial advise with christian believes. This is a religious book.
Presents excellent advice in a format that appeals to teens........1999-07-23
What a user-friendly book! Easy-to-read print, lots of cartoon-style illustrations, short chapters, easy-to-follow activities in each chapter - all that and excellent information, too! Just the thing for my 16-year-old. When I saw this book I knew it would be a hit, but I didn't know just how big a hit. My kids choose their favorite subjects to work on first each day, and this book has become number one.
But, does it work? I'll say it does. Chapter 5, "Money Management Made Easy," introduces Larry Burkett's envelope system for managing money. As soon as my son read this, he gathered his envelopes and he's been using the system faithfully ever since. If that was all he got out of this book it would be worth the price. But he is also learning how banks and checking accounts work, how loans and credit cards work, the dangers of borrowing, how to buy a car, and even how to get and keep a job.
Larry Burkett's money management principles are very scripturally sound. Although we have tried to raise our children by demonstrating and teaching sound principles, sometimes hearing from an "expert" can be just what it takes to convince them to do what they should do because it's the right thing to do, not just because Mom and Dad say so. I think that is what the bottom line will be with this great book. I am very happy with it and recommend it highly. ~sbd

But when the princesses start dropping dead, one after the other, all the evidence points to Yuri as the murderer! How will Yuri uncover the truth and expose the perpetrator without casting even greater suspicion on herself?

Girl Fight!.......2007-05-13
In this volume Yuri faces several princesses who have joined Kail's seragilo. Kail wishes to make Yuri his wife, but first Yuri must show that she can run the seragilo without anyone's help. The princesses cross the line when they threaten Kail's security and peace of mind, and Yuri quickly handles the situation after learning, from Kail's ex, why Kail has never dismissed her. It is also made clear just how much the Hittite Empire worships their beloved Ishtar as the Empire fears for her health. This series is a must-read for fans of both manga and history.
Red River can be considered one of the best mangas.......2007-01-13
Now I stumbled on Red river by accident and sure am happy that I did. It is a great story and it makes it very difficult for you to put the book down once its in your hands. The story has so many twists and turns that I can honestly it will be unbearable waiting for the next volume to come out because every Red river manga ends in a cliff hanger.
Yuri is a girl from the present world that gets dragged into the past literally. She meets Prince Kail and becomes the admiration of all man. She is a ver ygood model of what a woman should strive for. Not only is she kind but she is also strong and just. She teaches the hittites much including the New King Kail.
I don't want to give anything away but I just want you all to know how really great this story is and it would not be a waste in buying the series.
I hope this review was helpful.
Sex, Lies, and Harem Intrigue.......2006-11-06
In this volume of Red River, Yuri is being tormented by five of the seven princesses that vie for the honor of being Kail's Queen. Yuri overcomes these petty, immature power plays, but then the princesses start to get murdered one by one with the signs all pointing to Yuri. Nakia of course is involved and the search for the real killer takes up most of the volume. Finally the killer is found, but Yuri is now in the clutches of one of Kail's trusted generals that has been brainwashed by Nakia. What will happen next. Volume 15 is great because you get to see the power plays that take place within a harem, a spicy scene between Kail and Yuri, and a flashback pic to see Kail and Zannanza as little Princes. I can't wait till the next volume.

Another Great Volume!.......2006-12-20
Well this finally officially came out in English! I am so happy! This volume is better than volume 14 in my personal opinion because it has the whole love triangle between izumi, mizuki, and nakatsu completely throughout the whole volume. But it basically focuses on Nakatsu's feelings towards Mizuki and and Mizuki dealing with izumi. And Izumi is starting to have trouble keeping in his feelings toward Mizuki!! This is a really awesome volume!

Early Adolescence.......2007-07-18
I am a mother of an 11 year old and a student seeking a teaching license for middle school students. I found the information in this book very practical. There was researched information on different domains of development during early adolescence as well as practical tips to use in managing a classroom of 10-15 year-olds. I will use this book as a reference for home and school. I was disappointed, however, that the book was published in the 90's. I would like to see an updated version of this book.
common sense.......2000-12-17
I bought this book after accepting a position where I would be working with teenagers. I didn't read anything I didn't already know from common sense. Very general and remedial.
A must have for parents and teachers of adolescents.......2000-02-08
This is a great book for parents and teachers of adolescents. After 10 years working with troubled kids, I find it one of the best family and educator resources on behavior. It is easy to read, funny, informative. It's an excellent guide to what makes adolescents tick. Most importantly, it helps adults learn how to deal with adolescent behavior without losing their minds (as much.. ;)
Customer Reviews:
This time around, pay attention to the skills of Steve Ditko.......2002-12-22
I started reading "The Amazing Spider-Man" with issue #62 and the appearance of Medusa (the Inhuman with the living hair). Eventually I worked my way back to the beginning, mostly through reprints of the early issues in "Marvel Tales." Once I got past the epic two-parter in issues #39-40 when the Green Goblin learned Spider-Man was really Peter Parker, I was not as impressed because the artwork for the first 38 issues was by Steve Ditko and not John Romita (Sr.). I was never really impressed by Ditko's artwork and when he left Marvel to work for Charlton comics I always thought those were pretty much the worst drawn comics around (except for the issue of "X-Men" that was Barry Smith's first work in comics). However, I have had a major change of heart. I am never going to be enamored of the way Ditko draws faces, but I have come to appreciate that the man was a master of composition in the field of comic books.
Collected within Volume 1 of the Marvel Masterworks series devoted to Spider-Man are his debut in "Amazing Fantasy" #15 and the first ten issues of "The Amazing Spider-Man." We all know about the radioactive spider, the death of Uncle Ben, and the lesson that with great power comes great responsibility. Stan Lee certainly created something completely different when he came up with a superhero whose bad luck was the only luck he had. But this time reading these issues just look at how Ditko sets up each panel, paying attention to both this compositional skills and his sense of pacing. In "Spider-Man" #8 there is a Spider-Man Surprise Extra in which "Spider-Man Tackles the Torch!" The short story is drawn by Jack Kirby and inked by Ditko. Compare it to the other stories and see how superior Ditko's layouts are. Kirby offers rather minimalist backgrounds to the action, whereas Ditko usually provides detailed backgrounds of the city or where ever the scene takes place. I know fans of Ditko point to his artwork on "Dr. Strange" as his best work, with its depiction of spells and strange dimensions, but I really think he did his finest work on "Spider-Man." However, it will not be until we get to Volume 3 of these Marvel Masterworks volumes that we get to his trilogy involving Dr. Octopus that remains one of the greatest Spidey stories.
The Terrible Tinkerer in issue #2 remains one of the comic book's biggest duds and my students found the Lizard laughable when they read these comics for class (I always had problems with issue #1 when Spidey lassoes John Jameson's space capsule), but there are mostly solid efforts in these first ten stories. Of course, the origin issue remains a classic, setting the template for the comic's entire history. Borrowing Dr. Doom from the FF for a battle is okay, but it is the original villains, especial Doc Ock that stand out. The Vulture makes two appearances, the Sandman shows up to knock some sense into our hero, and Electro's costume is over the top but his powers are semi-logical all things considered. The most important thing is that all of the elements which have defined Spider-Man for almost forty years are all established in these first eleven stories.
Compared to DC Archives, Masterworks is disappointing.......2002-06-22
I've purchased several DC Archives and the art and coloring is very sharp. In comparison, in this edition of Masterworks, the art and coloring seems to be smudged. The look and feel of the book is just not as good. These early Spider-Man stories are good from a historical perspective, but Lee and Ditko have not yet hit their stride. Battles with aliens, the "Living Brain" and Dr. Doom are not good match-ups for Spider-Man. I have all five volumes of the "Essential" series and have enjoyed those very much. Even though they are in black and white, they are cheap and a great way to relive the best years of Spider-Man.
Greatest book I have ever read.......2002-05-01
I recently Bought this book after a long search for almost 4 months. When I finnaly got to open this book I was excited to find out how and who Spiderman was going to face in the first ever issues of the amazing Spiderman. This book is so unbeleivable I have to keep reading it, I literly can not stop. Filled with the first ten issues of the Amazing Spiderman (including AF15) and all of spiderman's first enemys. If you have a chance to buy this book you should definetly pay the fee and read this outstanding book. I love the drawings of Steve Ditko.
With Great Stories Must Come...Great Hardcovers.......2002-04-28
"With great power must also come...great responsibility."-Stan Lee.
With those words, Stan Lee closed the chapter on the first story of the Amazing Spider-Man.
Spider-Man was unlike any super-hero before him. He didn't just pretend to be the wallflower like some other boy scout I could name. He was the social outcast, ostracized by his peers, rejected and alone. He was a teenager. Back then, teens were usually the sidekicks. As Peter Parker, he was the epitome of uncool.
And Spider-Man didn't become a hero out of some notion of civic duty, or revenge for a past sorrow. Instead, he was driven by guilt. The guilt of knowing that had he simply stuck out his foot and tripped a passing burglar, his Uncle Ben wouldn't be dead.
That story, and the first ten issues of Amazing Spider-Man, featuring the wall crawler in battle against deadly foes like Doctor Octopus, Doctor Doom, the Sandman, Electro, and The Chameleon, as well as guest appearances by the Fantastic Four.
The oldest and most classic stories preserved for all time here in a hardcover bookshelf edition that you can be proud to show off to anyone. THIS is what comic books are all about.
Just like the title, AMAZING.......2002-03-02
Finally, if you'd like to have the very first 11 issues of amazing Spider-Man youhave to look no further of pay thousands of dollars for orignal 60's comics, this collection presents the first issues of Spider-man. Get to know his origins, the first villians he fought and his life a super hero. Printed in high quality gloss paper, in full, glorius colour, the pencil here may not be what newest readers are used to. These are simple, straight forward drawings that are now cult classics. The text by the master himself, Stan Lee, are interesting, yet funny and direct enough. I read it really fast, I only wish they would release the next issues. This book is for readers who maybe owned the original comics back in the 60's or 70's and want to relive those moments. Great also for fans of Spidey who want to witness his origins. Definetely a must.

Book Description
Elsa Klensch, former host of CNN's "Style with Elsa Klensch," has an insider's knowledge of the fashion industry's most flamboyant personalities coupled with an outsider's sharp-eyed objectivity. In Live at 10, Dead at 10:15, Klensch brilliantly evokes the worlds of fashion and design through the eyes of Sonya Iverson, ambitious Midwesterner striving to succeed in New York City. As a producer for the network newsmagazine "The Donna Fuller Show," Sonya is frustrated at always having to work on "fluff"-but she never expected her big break to come in the middle of the annual American Fashion Awards dinner.Sonya steps into the elegant powder room of New York City's 42nd Street Library to discover a just-out-of-rehab supermodel clutching what appears to be a bloody dagger and standing over the body of the glamorous wife of a fashion industry mogul. Sonya's first call is to the newsroom; the police come second. The dead woman, Harriett Franklin, was widely admired for her charitable work but nearly universally disliked, Sonya discovers as she interviews clothing designers, models, fashion magazine editors, and industry bigwigs. Harriett was scheming and manipulative, determined to have her way in everything from naming the new perfume being developed by the House of Franklin to keeping her Down Syndrome son in a treatment facility far from the spotlight. Suspects abound. Was the killer the supermodel, whose comeback Harriett was threatening to derail? The internationally-renowned designer recently fired at Harriett's bidding? The fashion magazine editor Harriett first bribed and then blackmailed? Or even Harriett's long-suffering husband, who may have finally had all he could take of his shrewish wife?Eager to break this career-making story, Sonya quickly learns many dark secrets about the seamy underside of the fashion industry. Sonya's next interview might be her last . . . .

Live? Dead? Don't Bother with this Book (or author?).......2007-07-07
Every seam between every sentence in this book shows. They are grammatically correct, but that's about it. The plot line is interesting but the book is so badly written, analysis of it helps suggests what good novel writing might be about.
For example of excellent early efforts, see Laurell Hamilton's "Guilty Pleasures" or Brian Haig's "Secret Sanction". Hamilton writes fantasy/horror/gore (ordinarily I loath that stuff), while Haig writes thrillers, so they may not appeal to fashionistas.
Haig really improves his series, especially given he deals, even peripherally, with larger political issues. Gotta love his wise-cracking alter ego, Sean Drummond, "The meal was an Army MRE -- Meal, Ready-to-Eat -- proof that the army has a sense of humor, despite what you hear. One bite, and I remembered what I don't miss about being a field soldier." (from "Man in the Middle)
I would recommend this book for ...............2006-04-23
.........pre teen or early teen girls. It's too boring and poorly written for adult reading.
Oh so disappointing.......2005-06-25
I had expected this book to be a thriller offering a fascinating look at the NY fashion scene, with lots of insider knowledge and an outlet for Ms. Klensch's opinions regarding style, beauty, etc. I had always enjoyed her work on CNN and was looking forward to this novel. Sadly, if I hadn't been spending the weekend at an isolated cabin with nothing else to read, I wouldn't have finished this book. I didn't learn anything about the fashion industry. Weak plot, cardboard cut-out characters, an unsympathetic heroine.
Glitz and glamour, not much else .......2004-11-13
Sonya Iverson is a successful news producer being pushed by her younger boss to get exclusive stories on New York's fashion crowd. Several times throughout the story, she mentions how she is recovering from a recent facelift, giving in to the demands of the media and her boss, to look more fashionable. We meet up with her at the New York Public Library at a Fashion awards dinner. Kim Kelly a famous supermodel and recovering drug addict is scheduled to attend. Isaac and Harriett Franklin are hosts of the event. Harriett has many enemies stemming from her selfish, supercilious attitude towards her work and social life. During the course of the awards dinner, she is found by Sonya murdered in the Ladies restroom with Kim Kelly pulling out the murder weapon. People seem to be either overjoyed or devastated by the murder. Kim Kelly cannot take the pressure and meets an untimely end. Sonya reluctantly figures out who is the murderer by realizing who is connected to all those involved. The action moves quickly, though in some instances not well thought out. The reader is kept on edge by several characters having motives. The editing is lacking in this book, and even has one glaring error near the end. A superficial, whodunit mystery when you want something light to read.
Mystery Fun.......2004-09-13
This book is first and foremost -- fun. The characters and the plot keep you moving through it. You get to see the worlds of television and fashion through the eyes of a real insider, Elsa Klensch. Fortunately, she doesn't take it so seriously. She just enjoys it! You will be kept guessing about the murderer, but even if you figure who it is... the real fun is staying wth the characters. Sonya Iverson, the television producer and detective, takes you on a romp. I read this over a weekend. It's fast and funny and fascinating.

Kind of scary.......2007-04-28
Well, I think case closed mangas in general are kind of scary. Not that it's bad though. I read case closed a lot. The bad thing is that the Japanese version of them is better. Still over all it is good.
