It's rare for a book's title to say so clearly what the book is about. In the case of Rupert Sheldrake's latest work, the controversial content is right on the front cover. Pet owners will see it and smile in recognition; skeptical scientists will shake their heads and mutter about "maverick scholars." We all know of cases of dogs (and cats) who know when their owners are coming home, who go to wait at the door or window 10 minutes or more before their human arrives. Conditioned by the tight rigor of contemporary scientific thinking, we either look for rational explanations or we file the phenomenon away in our minds as "unexplained" and are careful not to talk about it with our scientist friends.
Sheldrake has shown in the past that he is not afraid to be labeled a rebel, thanks to his theory of morphic resonance, which suggests the following:
Natural systems, or morphic units, at all levels of complexity are animated, organized, and coordinated by morphic fields, which contain an inherent memory. Natural systems inherit this collective memory from all previous things of their kind by a process called morphic resonance, with the result that patterns of development and behavior become increasingly habitual through repetition.
Sheldrake believes that the "telepathy" between pets and humans, or between flocks of birds or schools of fish that move as a single organism, can be explained this theory. Sheldrake is less persuaded by anecdotes that suggest animal clairvoyance--warning of something in the near future--but refuses to disallow the possibility.
He accepts that the case histories he details so thoroughly in this book are anecdotal, but that makes them no less real; and as a scientist himself he sets up experimental conditions for studying this previously ignored phenomenon that show beyond any doubt that the phenomenon exists. He castigates traditional scientists for their refusal to countenance anything that doesn't fit in with their existing paradigms (or prejudices) and challenges them to come up with some more "acceptable" explanation--but none is forthcoming.
This fascinating book is a first attempt at a scientific investigation into a puzzling but quite common occurrence. One hopes that other scientists will follow Sheldrake's brave lead. --David V. Barrett
Book Description
How do cats know when it's time to go to the vet, even before the cat carrier comes out? How do dogs know when their owners are returning home at unexpected times? How can horses find their way back to the stable over completely unfamiliar terrain?
With a scientist's mind and an animal lover's compassion, world-renowned biologist Rupert Sheldrake presents a groundbreaking exploration of animal behavior that will profoundly change the way we think about animals -- and ourselves. After five years of extensive research involving thousands of people who have pets and work with animals, Dr. Sheldrake proves conclusively what many pet owners already know: there is a strong connection between humans and animals that defies present-day scientific understanding. This remarkable book deserves a place next to the most beloved and valuable books on animals, including
When Elephants Weep,
Dogs Never Lie About Love, and
The Hidden Life of Dogs.

questions which are rarely asked - and an attempt to answer.......2007-07-06
In "Dogs That Know When Their Owners Are Coming Home" Rupert Sheldrake continues his quest for acknowledgement of phenomena neglected, forgotten or brushed aside by modern science. This time he focuses on the unexplained powers of animals.
Starting with the observations of pets, through behavior of wild animals, to humans, Sheldrake examines the connections and bonds between living creatures, which lead them to feel each other's emotional and physical state.
Probably all pet owners and people fond of animals have observed that some animals demonstrate behaviors that cannot be explained by genes or instinct (or, that would be too much simplified by such explanation). Wondering, how the pets know, when their owners are coming home, when some accident or death occurred, how to find a way home from an unfamiliar place even far away, when the owner intends to give them food or go for a walk, or how to recognize an attack of an illness such as diabetic coma or epileptic seizure, or even the natural disasters, like storm or earthquake, probably happened to all pet owners some time or another - and most of the time these thoughts were probably bagatelized and quickly forgotten in the face of more important everyday events.
The book is very well ordered and organized, very much like a scientific publication. After a short, introductory chapter, summarizing the history of animal domestication, Rupert Sheldrake presents the data gathered during his systematic studies, mostly through surveys in different parts of United States and Europe. The data consists of examples of pets, which exhibited behaviors described above, collected and analyzed in impressive amounts (even with statistics). Not only does he report accounts from the owners of dogs and cats, but also gives examples of horses, rabbits, birds and fish, and negative examples of pet reptiles and insects. He proceeds from these examples to the flocking and migratory behaviors of the wild animals (the linking behavior is the return home) and compares the findings to the human abilities, which, in the contemporary, civilized world, seem ridiculously meager.
The main body of the book consists of these examples and this is its strength (as a scientific argument) and weakness (as a popular book, because the lengthy lists of examples can be boring). The conclusions, however, are not very strong. Sheldrake applies here his famous hypothesis of morphic fields, which, in analogy to magnetic and electrical fields, are created by forces - yet undescribed -which are, in turn, created by social influence between individuals. The existence of morphic fields is an interesting hypothesis, but only a hypothesis. Luckily, Sheldrake admits it himself and does not push his hypothesis as a theory or as a universal truth, like some gurus of fashionable, popular "science" books. I have to give him great credit for being a scientist even though what he does is beyond the scope of contemporary science. The same goes for his explanations of animal behaviors by their ability to precognize certain events or by telepathy. Telepathy, or mind-to-mind-communication, seems especially plausible as an explanation of pets knowing their owners intentions before the owner can communicate them in any other way (body language, any sensory signal). Although telepathy is obviously his favorite explanation of communication between pets and owners, between animals in the group, and, almost lost, between humans, Sheldrake does not give it as the only explanation. He always tries to show other ones and, giving arguments for and against each one (sometimes, admittedly, not very strong) dismisses them or not. His approach reminds me very strongly of the approach of psychologists, which very often are vague as well. That is perhaps why I liked the chapters on the migratory birds most, maybe, because, as a biologist, I see most of the ecological and "harder science" in it?
At the end of the book, the methods for investigation of pet behavior are presented, so that the interested readers can try their own experiments, which are very simple and do not require much skill - only perseverance.
I like Sheldrake for pursuing his goal of presenting to the non-scientific crowd of readers the alternative or once studies, but today neglected, scientific questions, without cheap trick or want for fame. He is doing his job and I admire his work, even though I have my doubts about it. I don't think this book was supposed to convince anybody of anything (as some previous reviews suggest), it rather intends to puzzle and ask questions, making the reader realize they cannot be unequivocally answered with the current state of knowledge. This book is not his best (some are really great), mainly because of endless lists of examples, but it is good and solid.
Convincing Research.......2007-03-02
Starts with many natural case histories for psychic pets, then describes his brilliantly simple experiment. I interviewed Dr. Sheldrake on my Skeptiko Podcast. He's extremely well-spoken and likeable.
Amazing, Enlightening, Thought-Provoking.......2006-03-14
Some dogs seem to know when their owners are coming home. No, not when they are walking up the front steps, but when they are still at the office DECIDING to come home. Some animals know when their owners are in distress or dying, far away. Some animals know when their owners are about to have a seizure, or attempt suicide.
Author Rupert Sheldrake has compiled a database of hundreds of fascinating anecdotal reports, supplemented by simple but clever research studies. He challenges us to consider these unusual but intriguing phenomena, that do not depend on physical distance or any known sensory pathways. He has a healthy respect for scientific method (and uses it when he can) but none at all for scientific dogmatism. To skeptics who discount these remarkable observations as mere "selective recall," he says, do the research and prove it.
This is a fascinating and well-written book. It was hard to put down, and in fact, I may read it again. To be sure, Sheldrake can't explain the phenomena he describes. He invokes the concept of morphic fields but can't really tell us what they are. Further research is needed, and, to his credit, Sheldrake is attempting to recruit people all over the world, to participate in just such research. Why, even you could participate. I recommend this book highly. Run out and buy it today. Reviewed by Louis N. Gruber.
One of the best books I've read lately.......2005-12-09
This book was well-written, engaging, and thought provoking. The research was very well done, and I am usually quite skeptical. But this opened up a whole line of thought of how our minds may work, for me. I definately recommend it.
Telepathy as a Common Biological Function.......2005-08-12
One Amazon reviewer of DOGS THAT KNOW WHEN THEIR OWNERS ARE COMING HOME wrote "Budiansky's THE TRUTH ABOUT DOGS states that other researchers were unable to replicate Sheldrake's amazing results. I like pets just as much as anyone else, though I don't feel the need to glorify them with powers that their small brains are incapable of possessing."
First of all, Stephen Budiansky--whom I admire--thinks dogs are social parasites (though that's not why I admire him; I like his unique approach to the subject matter). And the truth is, at least one other researcher, who was furiously attempting to discredit Sheldrake's theory (hardly an objective approach), actually ended up replicating his results exactly.
And having a small brain has absolutely nothing to do with what Sheldrake posits to be a common biological function of all social animals. He theorizes that it's a fairly ordinary form of communication that pre-dates human language and which doesn't require any kind of highly developed cognitive architecture.
Granted, Sheldrake focused on the dogs who'd been reported to already show this behavior, but the thrust of the research detailed in this book was not to provide definitive proof that dogs are "telepathic", but to start people thinking in that direction. And some of the data is quite remarkable.
By the way, my dog could care less when I'm coming home. He's always asleep when I get there (though he's always happy to see me). But I've had other experiences that show Sheldrake is on the mark. For instance, I found that if I'm walking my dog and thinking about going into a store up the block and picturing the possible behavior in my mind, he'll give up his usual path and pull me toward that store, even if I've changed my mind in the meantime.
I've also found that when teaching the down/stay at a distance, followed by the recall, if I imagine the dog coming toward me before I give him the release and the recall signal, he'll almost inevitably break the stay and come running.
I'm not a complete moron, so when I first noticed this happening I figured that I must have been doing something with my body language to cause this behavior. So I very carefully monitored and controlled my posture, my facial expressions (even though I was fifty yards away), etc. Nope. It wasn't my body language.
Huh, I thought, could it be these mental pictures I'm creating in my mind? So I trained myself not to create those mental images and whenever I kept my mind blank the dogs inevitably stopped breaking the stay until the release signal was given.
These experiences are far from being scientific proof but they do make you think.
I also recommend THE PRESENCE OF THE PAST for Sheldrake's theories on morphic fields.

Patty Summers has a remarkable gift--she talks with animals. She doesn't just talk to animals, she converses with them. A regular Doctor Dolittle, Summers shares stories of the animals in her life--dogs, cats, and even an iguana named Quasar. Talking with the Animals will bring a smile to your face, and sometimes a tear to your eye, but there is more here than a human interpretation of animal antics. These stories are told as much by the animals themselves and will teach you as much about the humans on this planet as they do about the furry, feathered, and scaly creatures we share our lives with. --Brian Patterson

I warn you...this book will make you cry, but you will laugh, too. I am proud to be owned by a parrot, and Patty's story of her own parrot, Pop, was amazing. Patty's spirituality really comes forth in her writing. She is right on when she says that humans have decided to step away from "mother earth's table" and take and take while giving nothing in return. A thought-provoking yet comforting read.

very disapointing.......2007-08-04
I had been intrested in the arts of shape shifting for quite some time and had bought this book in hops to find tecnects to improve my results in transformation but sadly just after reading a few chapters I quickly began to realise that this book was simply wasn't for me. For starts she is a shaman and through my ocult studies shamanic transformation is more for the spiritual side becuse they(shamans belive that animals can teach us a lesson in life.) Look it up if you don't belive me!compared to a wizard transformation which is more on trying to actually turn into a specific creature in real life which was used as a weapon!
Who am I ?.......2006-07-15
Loosen up your energy - are you really separate from everything? Isn't all just energy? Think about this while you read this book.
Rosalyn Green, really did some research to get together all this information. Before reading it - i didn't know that there are several ways of shifting: mental, astral and physical.
You will get in touch with your animal side.
About mental shifting - I have to think of an episode in Calvin&Hobbes, where Calvin turns himself into an Elephant, to be able to remember his homework...
This book is very specific about shifing into animal - you can use the same techniques to shift into anything you like, as writen about in the book of John Perkins "Shape Shifting". Although John Perkins book is not a "how to" book - this one here IS.
Enjoy
An OK Book.......2006-05-23
The Magic of Shapeshifting is an interesting book but I really do not think it is worthy of the hype that surrounds it. I have had this book suggested to me by several sources and people seem to think highly of it, but I just don't see it. It would be better if this book was marketed for what it really is, a book about shapeshifting folklore, though even the folklore can be questionable at times. The author claims that she truly believes in shapeshifting on all levels, spiritual, mental and even physical. But she also says that she has no experience with doing this nor does she know anyone that can/has done such. Then she tries to tell you how to do it, even after she admits that she has never done it. This book just feels like the author wrote down the things she has heard about shapeshifting throughout her life with no real experience or much real research just to put out a book. One of the things that really gets me is that she obviously has a fondness for wolves, which she does admit, so much so at the expense of other animals. She talks about characteristics to practice if you wish to be closer to the wolf. Then the only thing she has to say about cats is that they are vain, so to connect to cats one should act vain and worry about their appearance. If you really like wolves and want to read some folklore about shapeshifting then you might want to check this book out. But there are much better books out there on this subject and I would recommend Ted Andrews' books (Animal Speak in particular) over this one if you have to choose.
Taken with a bite of caution, and it's fine.......2006-01-31
Like most books about the paranormal, this one contains some things that not everyone will agree with, plus some just plain errors. It's not a perfect book. It's a real decent book on a topic that few authors have had anything much to say about. But, there is one thing you should realize if you are trying to decide whether to read it. This book contains three sentences, just three, that advise people in passing to stay away from a certain cult. The book never names names, it just describes the cult's general operational tactics. However, if you've ever been involved with this cult, you can easily tell that the book is talking about them even though no organization name or personal names are mentioned.
However, these three sentences have done more damage to the reputation of this book than any of the errors it contains. This is because the cult members have gone on a campaign to ruin this book's reputation. They falsely accuse the book and its author of plagiarism, racism and of portraying "werewolf people" as insane, and will say anything and everything bad about the book that they can think of.
I'm the first to admit that the book does contain some errors. But, it is not racist, it is not plagiarized from any website I've ever seen (and I've been visiting werewolf websites frequently for over a decade) and it portrays "werewolf people" as decent folks, perhaps even special, but not as raving lunatics.
So, before you make your decision, realize that some of the bad things that get said about this book are motivated by a cult fearful of losing its grip on its members. I've encountered this cult, and it really gets you bad. This cult also advocates unsavory practices, such as tormenting dogs in order to deprive them of their souls, and thus turn them into "empty vessels" for shapeshifting ceremonies, and some people have been encouraged to give all their money over for dubious "protection" procedures. The author has done a brave thing by denouncing this cult and showing readers a multitude of other ways to pursue the lifestyle of shapeshifting, either with a healthy group or as a solitary lone wolf.
A Shape Shifter's Review of "The Magic of Shapeshifting".......2005-12-13
This is a must have book for anyone who is either interested in shapeshifing or want's to "become" a shapeshifter. Greene carefully outlines and discuses almost every aspect regarding the art and its benefits and disadvantages. She also provides her own personal experiences in each field. As a practicing shapeshifter, I have confirmed that she knows what it is she is talking about, despite the fact she does not go into great depth of individual cultures' views on the craft but merely a compilation of all of them. Though physical shifting is discussed, she also makes it clear that physical shifting is either nearly impossible and/or extremely rare. Overall this is a must for any shifter or anyone interested in shapeshifting.

Most people don't realize that their pets are sophisticated mind readers, according to author Richard Webster in Is Your Pet Psychic?. Clairvoyant communication is, in fact, a legitimate way to increase understanding between pets and owners, claims Webster, who offers specific exercises to enhance interspecies connection. For instance, choose a time when neither of you is tired, and by all means avoid mealtimes when any pet is single-minded. Communication might begin with loving stroking and then wander into telepathic questions, such as "What do you want?" The trick is to be receptive to your pet's messages, either through body language or images in your mind. Webster addresses all creatures great and small, from canines to horses to goldfish, even "ghost animals" that are deceased. He also offers useful advice for helping lost pets find their way home. For skeptics, this book will be over the top, especially with tips such as, "Ask your guardian angel for help at any time when you are dealing with animals." But those who want to build a new form of communication with pets will find this a useful primer. --Gail Hudson

To Much History.......2006-08-10
This book was good and all but Mr. Webster put way to many animal stories and history than he does physic tests with your pets. There is like 15 pages of stories and 1 1/2 pages of pet physic tests. I wouldn't recommend This Book to someone who is serious about being a Pet Physic like I am.
This book connects you and your pet........2005-07-29
It was good to find this book. It seems kind of weird but when you look at it from a soul point of view, psychic communication is very real between living beings that have an affinity together, including humans and pets. Personally I think it is divinty that is in all creatures that provides the gateway to communication.
Anyway, I reccomend this book to truely "commune with nature".
They Laughed When I Said He'd Come Back, But When He Did..........2002-06-18
This book was highly entertaining to read. I must admit, I was *quite* skeptical of some of the suggestions in the book. However, my in-laws lost their dog about 2 weeks ago and I convinced them to try out Webster's tips for when your pet goes astray.
Sure enough, a few hours later, using his techniques, their dog came back. Now, I know that sounds crazy. Even they ribbed me about it saying it was a coincidence. Maybe so. But I am very glad to have read the book, regardless. I found it very helpful.
Skeptics will always be skeptics. That's understandable. It's very hard to admit when you are wrong. For those animal lovers out there, you don't need proof. Animal lovers will thoroughly enjoy this book and will find it very helpful indeed!
Book Description
Animals ranging from mosquitoes to elephants use their own words to guide humanity to a deeper spiritual awakening.
• Contains interviews with 25 professional animal communicators and over 100 different animals and animal spirits.
• Provides a thrilling glimpse of the possibilities of direct animal-human dialogue.
According to Echo, an Arabian mare, "Humans are beings of love who have forgotten what love is and who they are." Along with a host of other animal communicators, Dawn Baumann Brunke gives animals like Echo a voice--a direct line of communication to the human mind. Through Animal Voices, the animal kingdom delivers a message about deepening our spirituality and reconnecting with the web of life.
Our earliest ancestors had an ongoing shamanic dialogue with the animal kingdom, but this ability has been lost to most in the modern world. Brunke provides the techniques to reopen these connections, reminding us that when we are open to communication with animals, we are open to deeper layers of ourselves.
The main contributors to this book are actual animals, who reveal themselves to be sentient beings with their own thoughts, emotions, and spiritual reasons for being on the planet. How Brunke overcame her initial skepticism and learned to hear their voices is a fascinating story. Throughout Animal Voices the author integrates her own reflections with those of the animals she interviews. The result is something that will delight animal lovers and force skeptics to reconsider their ideas about the nature of animal consciousness and the possibility of telepathic human-animal communication.

Deep Insights.......2007-03-26
This is not a light hearted read with animals chatting about their favorite activities, foods, or places to sleep. This is a collection of deep insights from the animals' higher selves. Most of the exchange is about the animals' perspective on human consciousness. Telepathic communicators relay messages like we are all connected and humans have forgotten who they really are. A dog talks about being from another planet, dolphins discuss being inter-dimensional, and several animals share the reasons they chose their current physical forms and their purposes in this lifetime. Lessons are taught - one of which is that the animals' reality isn't necessarily as we humans project it. For example, zoo animals explain that when people feel outraged at wild animals in captivity, we should understand that many of them chose that existence to share and communicate with humans (although many of us aren't listening and hearing them). In another viewpoint, some captive animals discuss being disappointed and sad because they thought their capture was temporary, sort of like a human foreign exchange student. It's definitely an interesting read and, when finished, you'll never look at animals the same again!
Animal Voices.......2005-08-04
Animal Voices opens a window to a relationship with animals that some of have always suspected existed, but only recently have been able to validate. That is the universal language of trust and love that is common to all livings things. What makes this book special is the understanding of past lives that specific animals communicate verbally and the knowledge that we, if inclined, may also partake of this. The delicate, joyous feeling of universal understanding comes upon those who are open to this. Even our beautiful earth, though mute to most of us, has a symphony of love and harmony that patiently supports us.
It's cool to find a book on this subject, but....................2005-07-27
Overall, it was nice to read more about this subject. I kinda just went through some material quickly, but some really kinda stuck with me....like even when I see a fly or mosquito now, I am reminded that it has its own value and worth. But, some of the stories were just kinda too much for me to comprehend....like it's way out there. It's kinda like, read it and take what you will out of it.....

Hehe... I haven't read it yet, but my friend Dawn sure looks like a good writer and I am looking forward to reading the book! I already quote it five stars!
thank you, Dawn.......2005-06-05
Since I read this book, the thoughts expressed in it are always with me. These thoughts come from the authors of the book: non-humans. They are whales, insects, horses, etc.
They speak about themselves, their history, and us (watch out!). They talk about predator and prey, which includes us. They talk about karma, multi-dimensional reality, their role as pets, their 'captivity ' in zoos and on and on. They all seem to acknowledge multiple incarnations as a given. You probably should read this book if you want to expand your horizons considerably. Also, at this point in our evolution, our relations with the "animals" is strained and one might say, destructive to us and them. Their voices are channelled by about two-dozen animal communicators and the whole is brought together by Ms. Brunke, an excellent editor and writer and a very good soul.
I also have been communicating with earthly-non-humans in the past few years. However, they don't seem to speak in the twentieth-century new-agey jargon that I find in this book. I guess it's just how the communication comes out. The animals I communicate with don't use language as we know it or the thoughts behind language as we know it. Their minds are much more silent and not as chatty as some of the creatures herein: they do and they simply do. They help me to do. I think that's what we have to learn form the animals. The constant reflective thinking that we do is not what they do. So where do all of the words in this book come from? I have no doubt they come from the animals as interpreted by the communicators. Just be.
Contact with animals is a valuable tool for understanding our mother, Earth, as many species, such as insects, have been here far longer than we have. If we want to know what living on earth is all about, we must learn it from the ones who evolved and perfected themselves to live on earth millions of years ago. I've been trying to learn from them for a couple of years. My first real teacher was a small geometrid moth, who chose me since I had helped her when she was an inch worm ( I was just helping an inch worm one day, out of love for all of us). She died 5 days later. But guess what: she was still there after death and still helped me. She sent her daughter to me. That I could get help from a moth (what an idea!) was given to me by this book. This is why I recommend it.
Let's say we want to evolve our consciousness. We read many books -- all the right books to do that, but what we have is still only human knowledge. We go beyond and closer to reality when we cross species and we get closer to the pulse of earth-life itself. This brings us closer to the Tao. On earth, the Tao teaches about earth-life. When we listen carefully, it teaches about universal life.

But well beyond that, whether or not one accepts the author's ability to communicate with the orcas, what she relates about the wisdom of whales (primarily Granny, the 90+year old leader of J pod) is a wake-up call for humanity.
Makes for fascinating reading........2006-10-15
Whale naturalist and animal communicator Mary Getten goes beyond what other research has achieved in the way of whale study and communication processes: in 1991 she studied the J-Pod, a family of whales off Washington State. Her contention that they use direct telepathic communication between themselves and can do so with humans also makes for fascinating reading.

Communicating With Orcas - The Whales Perspective.......2006-09-08
I found this book amazing. I'm from Michigan and we "Michiganders" tend to think about lakes not oceans. This book opened my eyes to a new way of thinking about the world. It also made me start to think about the oceans creatures in more than just a "far away" way. If you do believe in animal communiation you will find this book to be a wonderfully different type of perspective. If you think animal communication is a "bunch of nonsense" this book may seem really strange to you, but it also makes you start to think "What if the whales do think, What if other animals think, what would they think of us and our running, running rather than enjoying and loving life" I highly recommend this book to all!!
Can you believe?.......2006-08-06
This book contains some 25 chapters of a woman and a female Orca communicating telepathically. It changed my entire perspective on animal intelligence, and opened me to greater human possibilities that I had been denying but now know are possible.
So dont listen to the nay-sayers. Pick up this book and decide for yourself what you really think about this phenomenon.
